This is our go to place for take out. Chia Sen is family run and they have such a varied and extensive menu and always seem to have something new. My favorite is the cashew chicken. I am not sure why a lot places put pineapple in this dish, but these guys do not and I love it. The veggies are still crunchy and so are the cashews, without being undercooked. Another favorite is the wonton soup which I tend to want when I am sick. We have never had a bad experience her dining in or taking out. A bonus is that it is situated in a strip mall so you can even stop in and order, then walk to one of the other stores (like Bull Moose) and shop and go back to pick up your food.

I don't know what changed my taste or they're style but I was disappointed. The food seemed bland and reheated. I ate alone for lunch so the staff payed just enough attention and were very sweet. I'm not sure though I just can't say I left feeling happy or comfy as far as the grease level. I did leave a 20% tip still under twenty bucks but I won't be back for a bit: the truth this was always my go to best in Maine place but they lost the touch today.

I am not from the Portland area so my experience is based on my overall experience in Colorado, Florida, and Nevada. The service was good and the food was average.

The BEST Chinese food around! And for a Vegan it is a must. Only place where you can get all your favorites with soy chicken/beef/pork. My new go to place in the Portland area.

I will give most places three tries before calling it a failure.....and this is a failure. Three different dishes and they all had the same burnt, astringent undertones. Maybe it was three bouts of bad luck, but I would call it barely edible. Form your own opinion, but be careful.

I went to dinner to this so called Chinese Restaurant the on a Friday night. There were about two or three tables mostly tourist that didn't have a clue about how poor the food and service is here. I ordered the shrimp and wonton soup and asked the waiter to leave the pork out. He told me that he would and it had CHICKEN and two scallops for the protein. I was little confused and asked the waiter about why there was not any shrimp in it. After about five minutes the owner/manager came to my table and politely told me that the wontons have both shrimp and pork as a filling. That make sense, however you should train your servers on those things so they can give the customers good suggestions and accurate information about the food. Long story short - I got my bill and I was charged for the Shrimp Wonton soup instead of the Chicken and Noodle a difference of a measly $3.00. Based on principle, I mentioned to the owner that my check was wrong. I told him I was getting charged for a more expensive protein when I had chicken and two scallops (btw the scallops were not fresh and tasted weird). Pretty sad considering how close they are to the ocean. He gives me some sideways talk about how it had veggies in the soup and that's why he couldn't discount it. I'm in customer service and know the importance of taking care of guest. For a measly three dollars he lost my business forever. Even worse I work in a business where I am constantly asked suggestions on a restaurant....I would never recommend this place. The service was horrible and considering how there were four tables on a Friday night- the food can't be that great. I ended up going to the subway next door when I left.

Cute little place tucked in a small strip mall. Full bar. Tables of people surround smiling. If you want a buffet this is not the place as food is made to order, I wish Kyoto music was playing instead of light jazz bullshit.

I was reminded again today why I don't dine here often. The $12 Mongolian beef was almost all onions, very little beef, and when I asked for duck sauce, they charged me .75! Seems so petty.... With so many options for great Chinese in the area, I won't be going back, even out of convenience.

Large menu, good lunch choices. I had lemon chicken with brown rice. It was lightly fried chicken in a bright yellow, tangy lemon sauce. You could choose brown, white or fried rice. I had the brown. It was ok next time I'll try the fried. You also had your choice of wonton, hot and sour or egg drop soup. I had the hot and sour which totally helped my stuffy nose! For two meals , ice tea + tip we were out of there for $29. Good service

This is the go to for my husband and I. I have never been disappointed, their spring rolls are my favorite. Service is always friendly, for sit in and take out. I'm not a vegetarian but the sesame soy chicken is to die for. Amazing chicken is also delicious. Been going here for years and don't plan on stopping.

I've been ordering takeout from this restaurant for 15 years and it's always consistent and good. It's also one of the few restaurants around that you can order healthy entrees if you want. They also don't use chemicals in their food so 2 or 3 hours later, you don't get a freight train going through your mouth. Only oriental restaurant that I would go to.

As far as Chinese food goes, in the Portland area, Chia Sen is going to be one of the better choices to fill your craving. I've been here for lunch a handful of times and finally enjoyed dinner there recently. We were promptly greeted and served water / tea before I could blink an eye. After we ordered we were given wonton crisps to enjoy with their house made duck sauce, which is pretty tasty (sugary yes but you don't need to slather it on). My dad said their steamed dumplings were some of the best he's ever had in his life. The dumplings are quite good, but as a heads up they are quite small and packed with good flavor. If you're looking for large dumplings you might be disappointed. I however, will take quality over size any day. Having had their cashew chicken for lunch before (around $6.00 for all of their lunch combos - definitely a good deal if you're there between 11:00 am - 4:00 pm on any given day) I knew that was what I was going to order. The entrees come with a bowl of rice and you can choose either brown, white or fried. I chose brown rice to go with my cashew chicken and my dad ordered chicken with mixed vegetables and brown rice. The cashew chicken is diced up and has small round horse chestnuts (which I love, yay!) and browned chicken, cashew pieces and veggies. The mixed chicken with veggies was good too with large pieces of white chicken meat, a decent sauce, snow peas, broccoli, carrots, etc. With pretty affordable prices and decently sized menu, Chia Sen will curb those Chinese food cravings without leaving you feeling guilty.

Still looking for a go to Chinese place in the Portland area after trying many including Chia Sen. Went here a few nights ago with a friend. Ordered pu pu for two, a side of generals chicken, a couple mi ties and tea. Pros: Service, cleanliness, drinks and crab rangoon. Cons: generals chicken didn't have a hint of spice/heat and the chicken in it was dry and chewy (mind you we spent 1.00 extra for all white meat chicken option) Chicken fingers were really doughy and not crisp. Fried shrimp were definitely not close to fresh and smelled overly fishy. No rice included or offered. All of this for approx $55. I've tried this place five times now over a two year period and I'm thinking there won't be a sixth time.

There are really not a lot of quality chinese restaurants around the area, which is very surprising seeing the amount of restaurants nestled into the Portland and great portland areas and how much they pride themselves on being a foodie area. This little place is sitting in a pretty hidden spot in Scarborough, ME in between the AT&T retail store and SubWay but if you get a chance, stop in for some good and fresh chinese food. The service here at this establishment is attentive and on top of things, if they are not huddling together joking and having some fun otherwise you are fighting to get the basic refill on a glass of water or soda. Most of the times that I have frequented this place was for lunch where I usually get the wonton soup for starters, a couple of veggie egg rolls and some beef and broccoli with some fresh brown rice and I have never been disappointed. I have heard from some foodie friends that it is sometimes above par and sometimes sub par. The restroom is really small and is not kept up very much during the day where I have been in there and there have also not been paper towels to dry my hands. I think that if you are looking for some quick and fresh lunch, then Chia Sen is a good alternative to some of the fast food establishments surrounding the area in Scarborough (Taco Bell, NFC and Little Ceasars)

We've been coming to this restaurant since they opened in 1998. It used to be really, very good food and atmosphere. Unfortunately, over the years the quality and most importantly, the cleanliness of the place has deteriorated. The bathroom is REALLY FILTHY and has not been improved in years- which is frankly, unacceptable. From recent visits, the food has been very inconsistent. Sometimes it is SO oily and greasy that it rides really rough in your stomach. I will say the service is great and the wait staff is very attentive. They never leave you sitting there with your water glass empty. They do have a great lunch menu selection that offers smaller portions at lower cost. I know it's the same owner and is family-run business for about 16 years, but they have got to make some changes before we will return.

I stopped at Chia Sen for lunch takeout very recently. Like several other Chinese restaurants in the area, they offer their Lunch Specials (served with choice of rice and choice of soup) daily until 4PM, which is greatly appreciated since I arrived here around 3:30 PM. I ordered the Chicken Lo Mein Lunch Special ($6.25 plus tax) with plain fried rice and hot & sour soup. The food was hot & ready to go in about 10 minutes. I enjoyed my lunch outside since it was a nice sunny day. The portion of food was just right for a good lunch. The lo mein had good flavors (not too salty) with a mix of firm noodles, fresh vegetables and good sized slices of tender soft boneless chicken. The fried rice very good and tasted freshly prepared , which had a soft fluffy texture with a mix of peas, carrots, and eggs. no typical New England style generic dark brown fried rice served here! The hot & sour soup was good and not too spicy, plenty of tofu, egg, bamboo, and fresh mushrooms in the soup. After I was finished with the tasty lunch, I strolled into Bull Moose and "all good to go" for some power shopping for books and music.

This is seriously the best in Maine. Since my extreme youth to the present, my family has eaten in and/or ordered take out from here. It is consistent in food quality and service. Chinese here is fresh and oh so tasty. I love chia sen's amazing shrimp with fresh vegetables and sesame chicken as entrees. For appetizers, they make the best and freshiest spring rolls and egg rolls. Also, I like their boneless spareribs because these have just enough sauce and are so tender. Crab rangoons are very unique here, more of a carrot texture/taste..delicious. The sweet and sour chicken and/or chicken fingers Served here are not over cooked, but rather soft and tender. Great pork wonton and hot&sour soup. I love their house fried rice (with chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp) Chia sen makes so many good dishes, you cannot go wrong. The service has always been great for sit down or take-out; the family who operates chia sen remembers the regulars and in general gives great service. They do not offer combination platters, but for lunch chia sen offers soup, rice, and a choice of an entree. They do have vegan options and "lighter" fare aka steamed vegetables with your choice of sauce or sauce on side. The prices may be a little higher for chinese in Maine, but it is worth it. If you are looking for higher quality Chinese food in the Portland, ME area do go here!

I am Chinese, grew up on authentic chinese cooking. This place is the closest you can get to authentic in the Portland, Maine area. Great place though - nice people, good service. I still would rather drive to Boston for good authentic Chinese food.

On a whim my girlfriend and I checked the menu posted on their window and seeing some vegetarian/vegan options we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. After splitting the Hot and Sour soup for two, which was excellent by the way, I had the Mongolian Soy-Beef, spicy and tender "meat" and vegetables on a bed of cellophane noodles, it was extraordinary. She had the Soy-Chicken in Hunan Sauce, very similar to mine and just as tasty. The staff was very friendly and helpful with discussing the many menu options. Safe to say, we'll be back again to have some more soup and try out other dishes.

Funny for such a "foody" area, we don't have better options for Chinese food... That being said, Chia Sen is by far my favorite. They have a great selection of soy "meats", giving them the ability to make almost anything veg friendly! The food is good, really good actually but definitely not the best Chinese food I have ever had. I will keep coming back and recommended whole-heartedly to all of my veg friends.

Had lunch here today, wish we went to Subway instead. The food was o.k. not terrible, but not worth coming back for. Reading the past reviews one would think that this place has good food and service, it doesn't, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else for Chinese.

Went for lunch today with my wife. Our table was very sticky, should have taken that as a sign and bailed. Our server was excellent, prompt, polite, filled our waters and the complimentary friend wontons were the usual. It was all downhill from there. Both our soups (hot & sour and wonton) were luke warm and very bland. The pan-fried dumplings were run of the mill. She had the ginger chicken and green beans, it was very oily and not very flavorful. I had the sesame chicken. I LOVE sesame chicken. I've eaten all varieties, all over this country. This was horrible. I will say that at least the chicken was cooked decently, but the sauce, which was orange, almost tasted like a barbecue sauce. We brought our leftovers home, and sad to say, both were drastically improved with bottled sauces from the supermarket. There does not appear to be any good Chinese food in Maine. Panda Garden on Brighton Ave is the best I've been able to find and even they leave a lot to be desired. Better to spend your hard-earned money on thai food at Sabieng on Forest Ave near Portland Stage Company. Absolutely incredible EVERY time. And I have no affiliation with them whatsoever. They're just THAT GOOD.

This is our 'GO TO' restaurant for Chinese food. It is always clean and the food is always very good. We've tried other places but we always end up back here and happier for it.

Bland, bland, bland. I was so hoping when I went in here that I would have finally found a good chinese restaurant in the Portland area, and well...all of Maine. Not so. They have a great selection on the menu, but it is all bland. Maybe, because I moved here recently from the San Francisco Bay Area I am a bit spoiled, but honestly...how hard is it to make authentic Chinese food? Kung pao chicken wasn't even spicy!

I have tried this place numerous times, mainly because I keep thinking if I try it again I will find the great vegan Chinese food I am searching for. Alas, it never happens. My biggest complaint is that most of the vegetarian dishes come with skimpy amounts of sauce that make me want to shout, "Just because I'm vegan doesn't mean I'm on a diet." Tonight I tried the sweet and sour faux chicken. When I opened the takeout container, my first thought was "This is cancer in a dish." The food was a reddish-orange neon color. Fortunately, it tasted okay. But that's my beef with this place...it's always just okay and never fabulous. One other complaint...the veggie dumplings are the size of my baby toe. Come on, people! They should be the size of 2-3 big toes!

We went here after trying another restaurant which was really creepy and then leaving. The atmosphere was much more upbeat, so that made a good impression by comparison. The waiter was prompt and friendly, and they gave us a bowl of those super-greasy wide noodle fried crackers to eat after we'd ordered. However, the dumplings were both $1 each and seriously about 1/3 the size of the smallest dumpling I've ever seen anywhere else in my life -- a total rip-off. They weren't particularly tasty, either. Next came the entree, a vegetable mei fun. They neglected to mention on the menu that this contained egg, so I had to send it back because I just wanted vegetables. At $10, this was overpriced and nothing special -- but not bad. Overall, the staff seemed to try pretty hard to please, but there really was just nothing outstanding about this place. It had better atmosphere than your typical Chinese "grease hut" take-out place, and the food seemed to digest OK, but I couldn't help but feel like I wasted a ton of money eating here. People rave about how authentic this place is, but I just didn't see it.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
