my boyfriend and I love this little hole in the wall in East Deering. It's so cute, clean, simple yet homey and always packed with nice looking couples, friends, families, etc... It's excellent for dinner or lunch. There is a bar but it's low-key. The food is delicious. I like shrimp dishes. He likes noodles. They take instructions so well. It's a lovely mix of friendly and serious. Sometimes we are in a hurry and we are in and out in 60 minutes, so fastest service ever if necessary. Everything about this place screams, 'please come back soon!'

Everything here was very good on my lunch visit. The house special pho had a delicious broth, the flank steak was tender and the meatballs were tasty (if a bit gray). The chicken wings were super crispy and moist, and my dining companions loved their summer rolls, stuffed wings and crispy lo mein. Everything was very fresh and the service was spot on. I'd give this place more along the lines of 4.5 stars.

If you like Pho and you live in Portland this is one of very few options. And it's by far the best I've had in the area. That being said I've spent extensive time in the Far East and what can I say.. The Pho is better over there, but I suppose that's to be expected. If anyone knows of a place in the greater Portland area serving better Pho then the noodle bar, please let me know so I can go there immediately.

We come here or order takeout often because we live nearby. The food is generally very good but lately they've been using WAY too many onions in things like spring rolls. Big slices of raw onions that have to be picked out. STOP doing that, please!

We came here on the recommendation of the landlady of our vacation house in Falmouth. We did not go away disappointed! Usually I try to stay away from ethnic food in very White communities because the food strays away from its roots. But my landlady is a foodie and well-traveled, so I trusted her judgment. As soon as we walked in, I could smell the spices used for cooking and I was immediately comforted. The restaurant just smelled right, if you know what I mean. My husband ordered an extra large pho. It truly was. He was extremely happy with the portion size. The noodles in the pho was chewier than what he was used to, but he really liked it and preferred Veranda's. He thought the pho was delicious. I ordered the grilled pork and egg roll vermicelli bowl (bun). The grilled pork was marinated in a delicious slightly sweet and spicy sauce. The egg roll was fried to a nice crisp. I wish I could have had another egg roll in the dish. There was a good mix of vegetables. It was a very hearty dish without being heavy. I ate well. Service was friendly and quick. Great place to eat.

First time eating at this ethnic Asian noodle bar that's about a mile from my home. Great neighborhood setting with parking. Rustic Asian decor....but I liked it. Very friendly staff and attentive service. They have several styles of noodle dishes and noodle soup styles including Pho. I went with a vermicelli style noodle dish with Vietnamese ham and ground shrimp. First...the portion was oversized...especially for the modest $11 dinner price. The dish has sugar cured ham wedges with a funky ground shrimp mixture...lots of noodles, cucumbers, carrots, and spices. It created a hot spice and cold texture of the veggies mixed with the shrimp and ham ( uncured pork, sugared and fried)....it was delicious. Very authentic and visually pleasing when served in a large bowl....perfect heat, cooled by the cukes.... Two entrees...a Mai Thai and 20% tip was $40......very reasonable.... The menu is expansive....I'll be back to try more, Recommend 4 stars

I'm a big noodle fan and I especially like pho so this place seemed like an okay pick for dinner. There was parking, the decor seemed pretty nice, the waitress was friendly, but unfortunately, the food got me sick. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet and the food honestly seemed at least edible, but by the time I got home, I was sitting on the throne. There were definitely other people enjoying their meals (not pho) so I may be back at some point to give them another chance, but generally if I get sick at a place, I usually don't go back.

Short story; Nope. Nope. Nope. To expound: I LOVE noodles. I was super excited to go here on an early dinner adventure with one of my friends. She had previously really enjoyed her trip here and was excited to share it with me because she knows how much I love to eat. When we walked in, there was a large group of Asian men sitting at a long table in the front. This will be important later. We were fairly quickly greeted and sat. He handed us the menus and left. Crickets. It took a long time to even place an order and probably ten minutes to get our drinks. I would have understood if they were busy, but the girl behind the bar was wiping the counter and watching television. We quickly decided what we wanted and ordered a drink each and some noodles. I ordered steamed noodles with beef and my friend ordered fried noodles. We also ordered spring rolls (fresh) and tempura. The tempura was great. The spring rolls were okay but LOADED with onions. The entrees came and my friend's dish was equally as loaded with onions. My noodles were vastly under flavored. To be honest, the whole thing was kind of gross. At this point, I excused myself to use the powder room. The. Floor. Was. So. Sticky. My sandals were sticking to the floor. Gross. At this point, I was ready to be out of there pronto!!! It took over fifteen minutes to ask for the check and another ten to get it. So to summarize: Nope. Nope. Nope.

Always consistently good. Try the v4 and add a sliced spring roll to it. Light and the shrimp are grilled perfectly. My second go to is the crispy lime in with tofu. Lots of veggies with a delish brown sauce served over crispy noodles

I'm a lover of pho, so when I found this place, I was dying to try it! The pho is pretty good - I'm vegetarian, so I had the vegetarian broth pho with steamed tofu (not on the menu, but all you have to do is ask). I really liked the flavor of the broth, but the veggies and the noodles themselves needed to be cooked a little longer to be perfect. Other than the slightly undercooked food, I thought the environment was cute, servers were really nice, and the after-meal "dessert" of sliced oranges was a pleasant treat. Definitely a good place for pho-lovers!

Disappointing.. But the spring rolls were good :) but service was good so it deserves at least 2 stars. Maine does not really have not have a wide variety of vietnamese so this is very popular and i was recommended this place by the staff at veranda asian market and i tried the beef pho and fresh spring rolls and the pho barely had meat like there was like 5 PIECES OF MEAT.. RARELY any noodles and everything was broth. The mint and beansprouts did not seem fresh. Good prices and clean restaurant and ill probably not be back but who knows.

So delicious that I can't stop eating there. Huge portions, quality produce, and some of the friendliest people in all of Portland. The jasmine tea is delicious (not to mention free!) and the orange slices to round out the meal are so much better than the standard fortune cookies! I highly recommend the lo mein (done in a wok, not oily, and a great, smoky flavor) or any of the soups. The soups all come with a plate piled high with crispy bean sprouts, fresh cilantro, lime, etc. There is a new and fantastic flavor in every bite here! You will not be disappointed.

I am going to preface this that if your establishment sells a fresh version of the deliciousness called Pho, then I am going to give you a good rating just because I am such a fan of the vietnamese cuisine. This establishment also has a lot of other pieces that I really enjoyed here with the windowed seating overlooking Veranda street and the hustle and bustle of the ice cream store right next door and Howie's pub right across the street. It also has a lot of movement from the runners and bikers meandering over from the Back Bay area and their eveing and afternoon workouts. The service here is attentive and very good and the food is always fresh when I have steered away from the heavenly Pho, I have dabbled in the fried rice, the chicken wings and the egg rolls and they have all been very good and tasted fresh. The team is always refilled and water is continuously topped off. The restaurant itself is well kept and it even has a nice and clean bar area with a TV on that takes requests for what you might want to watch. A nice added touch is the fact that they always bring some sliced fresh oranges to cleanse the pallette after eating your asian cuisine. I have never done this before but i will tell you that after a pretty big bowl of Pho, the orange cleaned things right up. The only drawback here was with the Pho with meatballs in the mix. The meatballs were processed and seemed like bland balls of spam and had no flavor or real texture. I will just order the one with the flank and skirt steak with the noodles. I would definitely recommend this restaurant in the hustle and bustle of veranda and Washington Ave ... you should stop in and check out the goods and enjoy some good food.

Just awesome food and wonderful staff. I can only comment on the house pho and the steamed wontons, but they are just plain ass kicking good. You won't go wrong here.

Good place to grab a warm bowl of pho. Came with my sister and nephew when I was in town visiting as she noted this is the place she and her husband go when they're craving the pho. We came at an off-time sometime between lunch and dinner and there was only one other couple. We got an order of shrimp tempura, my sister ordered the Crispy Lomein (Mì Xào Dòn) a stir fry with mixed vegetables in brown sauce over a bed of crispy yellow lomein noodles, I got the Dac Bit (combination noodle soup with rare steak, well-done flank, and meatball). It hit the spot. Everything was very good!

Let me be straight forward- As a resident of the Bay area, I feel that my palette is very good in telling the difference between good and bad Asian food. Anyway, while visiting my gf, Christine L. while she's attending pharm school, we both get the urge to try our comfort foods that we'd normally get from home - vietnamese, chinese or korean. Portland, Maine doesn't have a great number of choices when it comes to this type of cuisine, but of the five places in the area that I have tried, Veranda Noodle bar has the best tasting Pho in the area! From the noodles, the soup, beef fillets and even the beef balls! I was questionable at first, but Veranda really kept the dish and taste very similar to its roots. [I only say this because I personally felt that a lot of the Asian restaurants in the area were tailoring towards a less authentic direction, truly a mistake if you ask me, but I don't really know the market in the area that well]. My Pho (#1) order was delicious-great broth that went well with the vermicelli and the protein tasted great too! Excellent dish and a fair price. Oh! How could I forget! Christine L. and I also ordered spring rolls simply because if we're getting Pho at a place we've never been to, we have to try their spring rolls. We ordered rolls with pork and were surprised at what we saw when they came. On the plate was what looked to be 4 side salads wrapped up in rice paper- they were huge! The pork was very flavorful and the peanut sauce really brought the whole dish together. If you ever stop by here, you HAVE to try their spring rolls-meat choice is up to you, i doubt they'd go wrong with any other type. All in all, we were both very happy with the flavor and pricing of this location. Unlike others that lacked much familiar flavor and were overpriced, Veranda noodle bar really impressed us. I've put this place down as a place to visit each time I fly up to Maine- and you should too!

Tried this place a couple of times and does not disappoint. Had the duck and noodles and duck were perfectly cooked. Take out arrived within the estimated time. Check out the ice cream in season . Take out did not arrive quite hot enought

One of my favorite places to eat! Love the Pho, the appetizers, the V8 and everything else I've ever tried here. Service is always great and the atmosphere is low key and cozy. All of the noodle dishes are the best, and if you can tear yourself away from the Pho, I'd suggest the yellow noodle and duck soup. The appetizer sampler is a great way to try some of their fantastic offerings as well.

My hubs and I ventured over Tukey's bridge to Veranda Noodle bar and were quite satisfied with our meal! I got some pho - great broth, nice flavor. Someone else said Thanh Thanh II has better pho, I would say they are both great and it may just depend on your location. My husband got a noodle dish that he absolutely loved - perfectly fried tofu, big fat noodles, and yummy veggies. All in all, we had a great experience at the noodle bar and we'll definitely be going back!

i've been to Veranda Noodle Bar a couple of times now. i'm consistently pleased with how fresh and delicious the food is, the value for the money, and the short amount of time it between ordering and being able to put said delicious food in my hungry mouth :-) i'm pretty picky about my various Asian-style food experiences. Veranda gets a gold star - i couldn't ask for anything more. their lime-aid is really good, in particular, and i find pho to be the best cure to any sort of not feeling tiptop. so go get some, it's really good.

I've been here many times and the food is plentiful and delicious. However, we had a bad experience at dinner on Veteran's Day and I have to write about it. It was very crowded and they were not prepared as they were short staffed in the kitchen and dining room. As a result, it took ages to get our appetizers ( at least an hour) then our meals (another 20+ min). Our meals came out at wildly different times so that the last one arrived long after we all finished. People all around us were complaining about the lack of service. No one came to us (or any other table that I could tell) to apologize, offer a free app or comp a meal which they should have. Some people walked out after waiting too long. What's more, the kitchen continued to cook take out orders even when they couldn't keep up with the orders for the sit down customers. That should have been put on hold until they could manage the dining rm orders. It would have been nice for them to acknowledge people's distress instead of ignore it.

I've been to the restaurant a few times and my family has gotten takeout from here multiple time's as well. I'm yet to be dissatisfied with the food, although at times the service can be lacking. The most recent time I went to the Noodle Bar I went on a Friday night with some friends. It took a bit more than five minutes before we were noticed and seated, and service wasn't the most prompt... it was a somewhat busy Friday but I don't think they had more than two servers. We started off with some beers which were nice and cold, and then moved onto main courses. My friend ordered the Tái pho and I ordered Bún thit heo nuong (beef salad with rice vermicelli). My friend, who had never had pho before really enjoyed his meal - the portions are quite large but he managed to finish everything. The noodle salad was wonderfully balanced, some sweetness, a little sour, and spice as needed with plenty of fresh herbs. The pho is always great, and the other noodle dishes are quite good as well. The food is competitively priced, and as long as you expect the service (both at the restaurant and for deliveries) to be a bit mediocre, you will have a great meal.

The pho is as good as it gets in Maine. Other dishes are very good as well, but it's the Pho that stands out here.

Food is great but service is not. Twice now, the waitress is not very attentive. After they brought out our food, the waitress never came back to check on us. She never asked hiw everything was. I needed some more napkins but had to get up and ask for more. The tea was empty but we were never asked for any refill. We had to get up and go pay at the register. They never checked on us once. We ordered appetizer but they just left the empty plates on the table after bringing our main dish out. I usually don't like complaining but it happened to me twice where we say for15 mins waiting to pay for our meal but no one came over to give us a check.

I came here with my family while visiting from California. The service was great, and the food is as authentic as what we can find out west too. I definitely suggest this place to any who are looking for true Vietnamese food.

This is one of the best restaurants to eat at in Portland. I travel throughout the US and have yet to find a Vietnamese restaurant that compares. I suggest if it's your first time to start with the V8, you will not be disappointed. Anyone that has taken my recommendation has been very pleased with their choice. Lunch or dinner, dine-in, or take-out, the service is always pleasant and delivery is punctual. Give it a try!

(remember, I write this as a vegan) I love most all Asian food, but I found this place to be very disappointing. I started dinner with a fresh spring roll which was fairly good. It was very fresh and flavorful. It all went downhill from there. One of the things I love about Asian food is the light, fresh and spicy tendencies... what I wanted was some sort of a spicy-lemongrass-infused-soup-bowl of choy, scallions, other misc vegetables, rice noodles and tofu. Well, that plan quickly went out the window - every bowl of soup-like stuff was meat based. What I ended up with a bowl of vermicelli, some misc vegetable, fried tofu (yuck - fried?!?) and they subbed their normal sweet and sour fish sauce for a peanut hoisin sauce. This was ok, minus the FRIED tofu, but left me feeling kinda icky... not even close to the light, flavorful blast of flavor and spice I was hoping for. Needless to say, I won't go back and if I do, it'll be for a glass of wine and a double order of fresh spring rolls.

This review is only for the pho, which is not very good. The menu is extensive and I have no reason to believe everything else on it isn't super; in fact I may well go back and try other stuff, and I'll update this review if I do. But if you're after pho, try Thanh Thanh II on Forest Ave (outstanding) or Pho Hanoi in South Portland (decent). Maybe Veranda's pho will get better with age; I think this place is pretty new.

I write this knowing what the first two reviewers put down. And while I am not a vegan and the special consideration that goes with dining out I have to say this noodle bar is amazing. I've been there for dinner no less than 5 times and each time have walked away satisfied with selection, quality and service. The spring rolls are wonderful and the variety of noodle dishes is huge. I've tried several different dishes based on my waiter's suggestion and have not been let down. Always fresh, always incredibly flavorful, Veranda Noodle Bar is a consistent winner. If you are a fan of asian noodle dishes this place is a must to visit.

Last Friday night I brought two friends here for dinner, one who had recently spent 6 months in Southeast Asia. Both of them had pho dishes, which they said were okay although one said the pork in her dish was too fatty. I ordered fried rice with combination seafood -- shrimp, scallops and squid. What a disappointment. Unexceptional, sticky rice with a tan cast. Overcooked and so rubbery I set it aside. The shrimp, too, was overcooked. The scallops, what few I noticed, were inconsequential to the dish which, overall, lacked flavor and interest. I wasn't in the mood to complain; but probably should have. I've enjoyed rice dishes at other Thai and Vietnamese restaurants in the Portland area. The next time I'm at this one, if there is a next time, I'll stick with the fried spring rolls, which I enjoy.

I've been here several times before and had several of their dishes, all usually very tastey and with good service. BUT on my last visit on the eve of 01.15.15 things were VERY VERY different. I had the beef vermicelli which was "ok" but seemed to lack the normal level of flavor that they usually have - my partner had pho which was very good. The problem was with the service which is why I may never return here again---or at least not for a long time. We arrived at approximately 8:40pm (they close at 9:30pm) and were seated by the window. There were two other tables of dinners in the restaurant. One other younger couple came in after myself and was seated. After we were served our food and had eaten approximately half of our meals, the waitress approached our table with our check and said "we close" and attempted to ask me if I wanted a take home bag --- I said no that I was not finished and looked at her in a very distraught way----this was at 9:10!!!! My partner also kept his dish for the moment. Our waitress was also waiting on the younger couple that was seated after us and they literally had only received their two bowls of pho 5 minutes prior -- the waitress went up to their table as well and gave them their check -- and asked them if they would like a take home bag --- she put their pho in plastic containers and it was still steaming hot!!! At exactly 9:21pm the waitress returned to my table to collect her check (and tip which I regret giving her) and again tried to take my bowl of food....I asked "What time do you close?" She replied "9:30pm" - I took out my iPhone with the time of 9:21pm and showed it to her -- HOW RUDE TO KICK PEOPLE OUT WHO ARE EATING!!! Of all my years eating in many restaurants have I ever been told they are closing and I needed to leave in the middle of my meal -- HOW RUDE!! If you close at 9:30 then 9:30 it is - not before -- and usually in a restaurant that is the time that they close the door and stop serving anyone else -- NOT KICK PEOPLE OUT WHO ARE THERE EATING!!! I'm sure Anne Landers would agree that if they all want to go home at 9:30 then they need to change their business hours to an earlier time!! And a lesson in etiquette wouldn't hurt either!

There's not very many pho spots in Maine but I enjoy trying new places. This place gives you huge portions BUT the pho is bland! Eh, I can't help but be a little critical. I know what good noodles is all about! I would skip on that here. Pho-reals. I do like the rice plates thou. Super yummers! Service is decent, cozy little spot on the corner off veranda. Right across from their sistah restaurant. You can go get you some thai or some viet, the options are there!
