We were driving back from a wedding in Bar Harbor and this was a good half way point to stop. The restaurant was right off the high way and easily accessible without going through rotaries, traffic, etc. Service was nice and fast. The food was typical diner, breakfast joint establishment. My husband though his lobster roll was just OK and my eggs Benedict was alright. It held us over until we got home. Prices were wallet friendly. I would recommend this place if you are in a hurry but there are lots of other great dining establishments in the area if you are on vacation or want a nicer meal.

Quick and friendly service with a Denny's/diner layout, this place is awesome because of the food. The deluxe breakfast sandwich was excellent, and my daughter's chocolate chipper pancake was just right. My daughter ate all my potatoes, so they must have been nice as well. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. We'll definitely be back for breakfast.

Went there with friends on a recent trip to Portland. We had fantastic service and fantastic food! Cleo was our waitress and she was so super pleasant and professional...probably one of the best waitresses I've had in a long time. The food was all perfect. The coffee was fresh and delicious. Long story short, we enjoyed it so much that we went back the next morning! And we were absolutely delighted that CLEO WAS OUR WAITRESS AGAIN (and she remembered us!) We all got something different than the previous day and were equally as pleased with the food. I wish there was a location close to us in New Jersey. Better yet, I wish we could transport this place to our town with Cleo included! :) We will definitely be visiting The Egg & I again the next time we are in Portland.

We did not have to wait long for a table. (5 mintues) They also had a pot of coffee for you to pour while you wait. Prices were not bad and the service was friendly. There are a lot of options on the menu, but no pumpkin stuff. :-( They did have pumpkin coffee which was tasty. I got the Santa Fe Huevos and my fiance got Cambridge skillet. I was torn between the ANts Fe and the three crepes. We had to wait a little, but the food came out hot. It was very good and the potatoes were tasty. My fiance had to ask for additional Hollandaiae sauce.

Hubby and I ate here while killing some time while waiting for our dog to wake up from surgery down the street at animal hospital. We wanted to be close and didn't have many options in that area...so I didn't expect much just needed some coffee and a bite to eat. We were both impressed. Super friendly service and great coffee and iced tea. I had the Mediterranean frittata and hubby had eggs benedict with ranch potatoes (really great home fries) Both excellent. Hope never to go through surgery with dog again...but wouldn't hesitate to eat at The Egg and I again....

I had breakfast here this morning and the food was excellent. I had the Cape frittata- which is egg whites, lobster, spinach, tomatoes, mozzarella, smoked turkey & pesto with fruit and an English muffin. It was the perfect combination of ingredients and the lobster was clearly fresh & very flavorful. I also had the holiday blend coffee & I drank the whole pot myself because it was so good. I also tried my husband's grits with cheddar & they were delicious. The staff was super friendly & attentive. I would definitely go back the next time we're in the area!

Had high hopes because of all the good reviews but if your local stir clear. This is a tourist spot, it's connected to a hotel and because of that it's almost all tourist eating there. Which is ok other then there is a lot of little kids being loud and people telling jokes about Mainers. The decoration doesn't make sense, it feels like you walked into an Italian restaurant with the way the color scheme is but then there's random pictures of butterflies, chickens and cows. The service was good that's why I rated this place with 2 stars. The food was basic nothing really special similar to a Denny's but the price was certainly a bit high. In this city there is just way to many better places to have breakfast such as the BreLu or Becky's to settle for a place like this.

This diner is so-so. The food is equivalent to a Denny's but the service was very good. The portion was equal to the price. Not too much and not too little.

Decent breakfast although I think they put Miracle Whip on their egg sandwiches...ewww. Coffee was good and never ending.

This is an awesome breakfast place with high quality food and solid customer service. My only complaint is that it's not open enough hours!

I am surprised that this place has decent reviews. We stayed at the howard johnson that is attached to this place and decided to try this place for breakfast one day. In hindsight, I am not a fan of large or too filling breakfasts so maybe it was a bad idea for us to try this place. I told the waitress that I had a dairy and gluten allergy. I ordered the egg white omelette, which was probably the healthiest thing I could find on the menu. My boyfriend ordered 2 eggs, sunny side up. My egg while omelette was full of vegetables and was served with salsa and a fruit cup. The omelette and salsa were extremely tasteless and they used so much oil in the omelette that I felt extremely sick afterwards. The fruit appeared to be old fruit was definitely not fresh. I think they used canned stuff. My boyfriend felt extremely sick after eating the two eggs because apparently they doused it in butter. Overall, I do not recommend this place unless you like greasy heavy breakfast. I also ordered coffee which I felt was over priced and just ok. I wish they had an option to just have one cup instead of having to pay for a whole pitcher of it.

Very fast, very tasty, and very accomodating. We were staying across the street and heading out of town when we found this restaurant. There was a short wait for a table but after we were seated the service was fast and good.

Mediocre. Waitress described the iced tea as "fresh brewed" but it was in fact instant. Greek salad poorly done. The hostess asked how everything was and when I said "all right" she responded by saying "Goooood!" and then changed the topic to the weather. Not sure why she asked if the only answer she accepts is "good". Not coming back.

I have eaten here twice and have been happy both times...the menu selection is rather extensive ranging from waffles to skillets, to benedicts, to omlets...it goes on and on. They also offer many health and diet conscious options with egg white options. The first time I had the parisian benedict - served on a butter croissant rather than english muffin - sooo good. The last time I went I had a skillet meal with eggs, ham, bacon, cheese served on homefries...also sooo good. It is hard to make a selection with so many appetizing and unique options. Coffee is served in a carafe...meaning you do not need to wait for a server to come and refill your cup every time you are empty. Prices are fair and they also have a nice children's menu...Our kids loved the colorable menu/placemat with a supply of colored pencils rather than crayons (which are always the cheap kind and always break). I definitely think its worth checking out!

Surpising good for the location (read: adjacent to hotel off interstate exit). The staff is super friendly, selection of regular, strong, and flavored coffee is great (and abundant - they bring a carafe to your table), and the food is delicious. Priced reasonably, you can't go wrong! Scarborough location is equally charming and both hit the spot when you are meeting friends or just don't feel like cooking. Give them a shot - you won't be sorry!

We went in there with very little low expectations. However we were pleasantly surprised with the menu. The menu was filled with creative seafood dishes at a reasonable price. clam chowder- tons of clams, very flavorful, definitely store made. crab cake benedict- $10- Made with real crab meat. Eggs were cooked nicely with the hollandaise sauce. nantucket scramble $10- once again, tons of real crab meat. They also had many flavored coffee, we can the caramel crunch and it was super! There were a ton of Maine type dishes on the menu, I would definitely go there again.

We had a beautiful Sunday brunch here. We ate outside on the patio on a lovely morning and had great service. Portions were huge, everything tasted amazing. The pancakes were my favorite. It was our first time here, but we will be back for sure!

What a wonderful diner! The service was amazing and the food was wonderful! This is how breakfast should be done. I tried (by the recommendation of the waitress) the Apple Cinnamon Pancake and it was DELICIOUS! I loved it! My family had equally delicious meals. The food was freshly made and I did not feel like I had a ton of oil in my body afterwards. I am glad this was the last place that my family and I had breakfast before leaving Portland. Thank you, The Egg & I staff!

This place was wonderful! Stayed at hotel and stumbled in for breakfast. Staff, especially Kate were super friendly, food was excellent (I put in a very special order) and the atmosphere was relaxed. I would dine here again in a heartbeat!

I agave this review a solid three. It's no Bintliff or Good Table, but it is definitely better than Denny's or IHOP. We we went for breakfast on a Friday around 7 am. We were one of three tables which surprised me, but it was a work day after all. The waitstaff is very friendly and attentive. The renovations gave the place a clean bright feel however, the music playing was dire! We felt like they were trying to put us to sleep! The food is good and yes they can cook an egg! I ordered the Hikers Benedict. The eggs were poached perfectly, whites solid with a creamy yellow yolk that oozed over a bed of diced asparagus, mushrooms, tomatoes and ham. All atop an English muffin with a dill hollandaise sauce. I found the tomatoes a bit off putting as it gave the dish a bit too much acidity. The bacon is very good, not too crispy but not uncooked. I was not a fan of the home fries. They are coated in a ranch seasoning but my husband liked them. He ordered the Eggtastic omelet which he said was cooked perfectly. Light and fluffy omelet stuffed full of meats and veggies. Coffee was freshly brewed and pleasing. All in all it was good and I will go back the next time I have a hankering for a poached egg!

The food is quite good, the Parisian Benedict was great on a toasty croissant. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We sat out on the deck ... wonderful in the Maine summertime!

Huge sign that enticed me through it's colorful and inviting style. As I came in, it was pretty empty, but I was there at about noon time. As I entered, it looked like a regular diner. Right off the freeway, it emitted a cozy family orientated atmosphere that felt like a highway dinner although it was more kept up. I hadn't realized it before, but they have a couple of The Egg & I around Maine. Found one in Scarborough just the other day! I got the eggs Benedict and it was pretty much what I had expected. It's not a bad place to try and the atmosphere takes a person to an environment similar to cozy diner seen on television.

This place is my number 1 breakfast spot. I'm someone who's all about aesthetics, and I don't let the lackluster appearance deter me. As stupid as it sounds, I didn't come here for a long time because of the fast food/diner-esque sign and cheesy name. Eventually I got over it, and I'm so glad I did. I'll start off by saying that everything I've had on this menu is phenomenal. They have a seasonal menu with plenty of lobster specials- including a lobster omelette that's out of this world. One of my favorite things there is the stuffed french toast- basically a french toast sandwich with eggs, cheese, and sausage on the inside. It's not on their menu anymore, but every time I go in, I ask for it anyway and they're always accommodating. The prices are decent and the food is excellent. Can't really ask for a better combination.

My wife and I stopped in twice--the first time we walked out because we had sat there for 15 minutes without any service. We went to give it a go, again, when we were up too early on a Sunday. Someone had said this was 'an IHOP for eggs," and they're pretty spot on. The quality of is sub-Denny's and pretty bland. I had gotten the hash with hollandaise, both of the 'just add water' variety and the only flavor came from all salt. There was a dried green herb on top, but it imparted no flavor, so it could have been construction paper.

The first time I went there it was like a normal breakfast place noisy loud and not the greatest I order a pancake IT WAS THE BIGGEST PANCAKE I EVER SAW and it was great!

After driving for 8 (count 'em 8!) hours from PA, I managed to score an early check-in at the hotel and decided to give this place a try for breakfast. I was seated immediately and Emily, my server, was extremely polite and attentive. My Viva la France (2 slices of French toast, 2 eggs, and either 2 pieces of bacon or sausage) were great although I wasn't a huge fan of my coffee (I think it was the Brazilian blend? Way too strong for me, even with a ton of creamer). Definitely a cost effective place to grab breakfast with a smile!

Enjoyed a wonderful breakfast with calories listed on menu. Recommend the Vera Cruz Avocado and Chicken omelet because it was calorie reasonable and very tasty. Nice service; good coffee. Convenient location right off of the Riverside exit on the Portland and Maine Interstate. My husband and I will definitely return.

The Egg & I is close to my house and has ample parking which are two plusses for breakfast places in the Portland area for me. We don't live downtown anymore and with a little one we typically don't have the patience to wait anywhere for a family breakfast out. The Egg & I fills these needs very nicely as it is typically busy but we've never waited. Staff is always friendly and prompt, and the food is...good. It's not great, but passable for a weekday morning when you want to get out of the house early and do stuff but let someone else cook for you before getting on your way. It's also great for larger groups as they have a side room with bigger tables, where we are usually put when we go out with other families with kids - it's a great space for them Eggs come as you'd expect them to, the bacon is crisp and salty as it should be, the hollandaise is regrettable, but the waffles are light and crispy, and their kids meals are typical but come as advertised, and with a drink. The skillet dishes seem to be the best value for the dollar, and my wife LOVES the apple pancakes. All in all a solid quick breakfast stop and about a zillion times better than Denny's, the other breakfast option in my neighborhood.

It was delicious. I created my own omelet, substituted egg whites. The bring it to your room if you're staying at the Ramada Plaza Portland. Good price too. Definitely eating here again

Had the egg burrito, was very good, all the vegs in it were nice and fresh, abd the burrito as a whole was fantastic, home fries were average. Had French toast as well which was good. Would deff return here if I came back up this way again. Also that serve lunch during breakfast hours, so they are flexible

SLOW SLOW SLOW nothing special and the food service is painfully SLOW So many other options in Portland - AVOID THIS PLACE

  • Robert L.

Restaurant is clean and comfortable. Service was friendly, but a bit slow. I was almost done with my eggs before my English muffins arrived. The food was OK. My corned beef hash was a little on the bland side, and the eggs were tiny. Definitely not jumbos. Over all I would say it's an alright place to stop if you've been on the road and hungry, located conveniently off 95.

GREAT meeting room for small groups! Great food and service. We were there with 30 people only 2 days after they opened and they handled everything beyond our expectations. We'll be moving our weekly meetings to this location.

We ate here four times during our stay in Portland, and would return if coming back to the area. Nothing pretentious, just good food, abundant amounts, and reasonable prices. The service is also a plus, with each server being knowledgeable and courteous. The manager also checked each table to make sure that everything was all right. Service was quick, and mistakes were quickly rectified (eggs not quite done as ordered, for example.) Quite a good variety available, also.

The food was really great! Good coffee and friendly staff too. On what was a very busy day (Mother's Day) they managed the large parties well and were well accommodating keeping wait times as short as possible.
