This place is awesome. I love the brew selection. The staff is friendly and knows what they're talking about. The food is creative, with some inspired combinations. The fries are legendary and they offer any sandwich or burger done as a salad. I like options. Your best bet however is to come here with an appetite and at least one friend, so you can try a few things. That said, I have come here alone and had some pretty interesting conversations. There's almost always a crowd, so plan accordingly. You can hang at the bar with a drink while you wait for a table.

Amazing that they actually are open and serve food late night! Great food, good services, and absolutely great cocktail list!

My husband and I came to Nosh for dinner after coming up to Portland with a few friends for an impromptu night out while visiting family in Mass. Our friend had Nosh recommended to him by a coworker and bacon dusted fries pretty much sold all of us. I wanted to really, really like Nosh and while parts of the experience were great, it also left me pretty underwhelmed. Decor: 4 stars Nosh is physically a cool space, though definitely small. It reminds me of a lot of establishments in Minneapolis with the exposed brick, dark wood, low lighting, and mirrored bar area. One star taken away for not having any area to wait and also if you get stuck at one of the tables by the door in the winter months. Drink menu: 5 stars The drink menu is the best part about this place. Very good signature cocktails and an extensive beer menu. My husband and his friends all got a harder to find IPA. My Moscow Mule was excellent. Food: 3 stars This is the part that left me really underwhelmed and since it's a restaurant and we came here for dinner, it should have been the part that left the lasting impression (in a good way). Everything at Nosh is decadent - the sort of place where you go in knowing you are about to eat 8,000 calories and being okay with that. The problem, though, is that the decadence is not totally well-executed and therefore the calories don't seem worth it. One food highlight, though, is definitely the poutine. The poutine was out of this world. The gravy was excellent and the fries weren't soggy. The boys were practically licking the plate. If there is any food item to get at Nosh, it is this appetizer. The bacon dusted fries were disappointing. Between four of us, we didn't even finish the small basket. The fries themselves were really good - piping hot and crispy. However, the bacon dust reminded me too much of bacon bits and it honestly was a strange flavor. I had the caprese sandwich and it was fine - fairly unmemorable, to be honest. I did find it really strange that there were a bunch of hot peppers in the sandwich. I have eaten a lot of caprese sandwiches and never before have I had hot peppers in it. I love food with a kick, but I don't need a classic sandwich tinkered with in a way that isn't necessary. My husband and one of our friends split the mac and stack. Yes, this is what it sounds like: a hamburger topped with bacon stuffed between two fried mac and cheese patties. The burger itself was good - moist and flavorful. The mac and cheese buns were disappointing - both of them commented that they didn't really like the batter and the sandwich was just too much. For having such over the top food, Nosh was pretty forgettable and we will definitely go elsewhere on a return trip to Portland.

My dad was in town and heard good reviews about their burgers so we decided to give it a try on the night it 're-opened' after the remodel. We got there at the right time, if we were 5 minutes later we would have had to wait. It is so loud in there, ideal spot if you don't mind hearing every 5th word your dinner companion says. The service was also slow, took a very long time for our meal to come out and our server only came over once to refill our water while we waited, never asked us how we were doing or gave us an update on the meal. My dad and I both had the big mac while my boy friend had the chicken souvlaki, burger did not wow me - they don't ask how you'd like your burger cooked, it was definitely well done. Overall, very underwhelming experience and I will go elsewhere next time I have a burger craving.

Met some friends before a show over at Nosh. At first it ended up being for some drinks, but we ended up ordering some food and we were not disappointed. I would have to say the fried cheese sticks were some of the best food I ate all weekend in portland. Really cool space inside and would like to be back to try more of the menu.

I'd heard mixed reviews about this place before coming in, so I was a bit wary. I also wasn't a fan of the name of the place. I've never liked the word "nosh". Nevertheless, I stopped in on a whim one afternoon with my fiancee and it ended up being well worth it. The interior set up is a bit strange. To right is a bar and on the left is a long row of metal tables and chairs all lined up next to each other for dining, so you're almost eating on top of one another and can easily hear all the conversations going on around you. The food though was absolutely delicious! I had the kim chi - tuna sandwich. I don't usually order tuna sandwiches, but I was intrigued by the addition of kim chi to it. The sandwich came artistically presented and was super tasty. It had a great spice to it and came on a ciabatta role that held it's shape despite the moistness of the contents of the sandwich. While the sandwich was delicious in its own right, the fries were even better and probably the best french fries I've had since moving to Portland. They are perfectly crisped and come with a lot of great sauce options. My fiancee also loved the fries and enjoyed her burger. I know I was skeptical of this place when I first arrived, but it totally surpassed my expectations. I definitely look forward to coming back, especially to try out some of the other french fry sauces.

Their menu is BOLD and always delicious. Be sure to get a side of their dusted fries! It's sometimes difficult to get a table inside because they get quite busy, but it's definitely worth the wait. Also the limited seating out front is PRIME for people watching.

The food here is so good! The apocalypse now burger is one of the best things I have ever eaten! Also, the salt and vinegar fries are bomb. All the dipping sauces are delicious. The dunkaroos is good choice too for dessert! Also the mimosa is a good choice for a drink! Enjoy!

Nosh is an interesting place. On a busy night you better enjoying waiting and then being surrounded by a cancfphony of jumbled noise, then this place will suite you fine. We arrived at 6PM on a Saturday night and was told a 30 minute wait. An hour later, we got our table. The tables are very very close together. I only had 18" at most between our table and the neighbors. The music eclectic blend of grunge rock and who knows what but that doesn't matter, you can't make it out anyways. I suspect the curved ceiling, little soft surfaces and a general lack of space lend to the noise. I could only hear every fifth word of my company which spoiled the whole event. However, the food is very good and trendy. I had the spicy jerk chicken thing which was just enough spice and had some interesting blends of flavor. I went back to the menu online to see just what was in it but the menu isn't current. I suspect there was a bit of mango. I prefer it over a burger since gourmet burgers are not that hard to find. I get a kick out of the marketing of their meats. "All burgers are from all-natural cows, sourced from a 250 mile radius from their farms in Nebraska. All production is singled sourced, which means that when the animals are slaughtered they are all from the same farm." Well, that certainly makes me feel better knowing that the meat comes from1500 miles away and all the cow buddies get killed together. Not really sure that is adding to my dining pleasure. It would be more meaningful if they cows came from Pineland Farms. Now that is local and fresh. The service was good with timely order taking, delivery and keeping our glasses full. Everyone seems to go banana's over the french fries, particularly the bacon dusted ones. Granted, those are novel but not over the top must haves. I have better fries at the Royal River Grill House (truffle oil) and chronic fries in Grand Rapids. At $6 for a half a pint, they don't seem worth it. Oh, by the way, no entree's come with fries so if your looking for a burger and fries expect to spend between $18 and $27. Better be a damn good burger. Beer is a good selection of locals such as Oxbow and the likes. Just be aware, not all glasses are the same so you might be getting a pint or you might be getting a tulip. I know plenty of people really like Nosh but even though the menu is trendy and well crafted, I am not a huge fan. I would go there again if it was off peak so the atmosphere was at a reasonable decibel. If the food wasn't as good as it is, it would probably go with two stars but Nosh gets a bump to three stars.

The bacon dusted fries will be your new addiction. There were enough for two. The chicken wings were delicious as was the brisket sandwich.. We sat outside on the sidewalk, people watching..plenty of great beer selections and the service was perfect. Go...now!

I first discovered Nosh VERY late one night and they were one of the few places still serving food. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised. Most of their food is mediocre but the reason you go there is for the bacon dust fries. I always get chipotle mayo as my dipping sauce. They are outstanding. I stop by everytime I am in the area. Wish they'd bring one closer to Boston.

Every year my boyfriend and I have a running bet on March Madness--winner buys the loser dinner. Sadly, I lost this year...and then was tortured on top of it. Of ALL the places in Portland, ME, he wanted to go to Nosh--specifically for the fries and the burger reviews. He ordered the Apocalypse Now burger, bacon fries, and I had the tuna tacos (after the fries I needed something a little lighter). First, something about the fries was a little unappealing. They aren't fried in bacon fat, but are dusted with it...which kind of congeals in a weird way. Second, the burger he had was pretty awesome...but not for the price. It was loaded up with expensive ingredients to almost an unnecessary degree. I guess on the plus side, it is so hard to finish you could have it for two meals. Third, as he had his tasty burger, I picked at the tacos. I thought they smelled/tasted bad--but I'm a little inclined against fishy-fish and tuna is really my limit. Then he tried them and agreed it was inedible (he's much more tolerant), so I was left to pick the little tomatoes around the plate. I'm not a sore loser, but I hoped at least I could enjoy the meal too. The only reason this gets two stars was because he ended up liking the dang burger, and that's really the point I guess...

Well I'll tell you what - there isn't much I could say that hasn't already been said about the iconic Nosh Kitchen Bar; so I'll just add that any five-star review is spot-on. After living in the area (Scarborough) for almost two years, I finally put my foot down & said I was going to check it out. In the past, it had always looked quite crowded, and I was usually pretty hungry and too impatient to wait for a seat. I figured I'd have less of a problem in mid-winter, and I was right - we (my daughter & I) waited only 5-10 minutes. A great tap list caught my eye and I took advantage of the Foundation Brewing Burnside - until I saw that they now offer Narragansett Lager in cans. Say what you will, but it's always been my go-to fridge beer and to have it available while not on my couch was comforting. Dependent upon when you read this review, I'm sure the taps will have rotated to other fresh, local beers. The menu was basic but with interesting options. I opted for a - don't judge me - triple pig burger (which is what I felt like after attempting to finish it) with three wicked-fesh organic beef patties, bacon, and the regular trimmings. My daughter chose the Mac & Stack burger; wherein the bun is replaced by two fried macaroni & cheese "planks." I was unsure of how this was going to work, and it was best eaten with knife & fork. Of course we tried the famous fresh-cut, bacon-dusted fries, as well as the salt & vinegar fries with horseradish mayo dipping sauce. They're worth a visit just for themselves. The service was smooth and friendly, and we spotted the owned helping to run food - always a good sign. I love ownership & management that isn't afraid to get their hands dirty. We will definitely be returning to Nosh, knowing that the portions are RIDICULOUS and to share an item or two.

On my first visit to Portland, I wanted to have a good burger! I tried the Nosh Burger--unique combo of flavors:blue ranch spread and bbq sauce. The ranch spread was overpowering. You had to order fries separately My fiancé got the Mac and cheese burger and loved it. There was a wait on Friday evening so you could tell it was a popular restaurant. We sat at the bar. The bartenders were very busy but gave good service.

I was first introduced to Nosh by a former boss, who was obsessed. When the mood strikes me to eat a giant burger and go to town on some awesome, not healthy, gut busting food; this is where I want to go. Service is strong. I personally prefer the service type at the bar in this establishment, however the table service is okay as well. I love the burgers. I have had a few sandwiches and they have been delicious, but lets face it, you go to Nosh for the burgers and fries and maybe the fried pickles. They are awesome and amazing. I always leave full and satisfied. Not a complaint because I do love my burgers and fries, but this restaurant is a little bit of a one trick pony. The food tastes great, but you can only eat like this every so often. I definitely need to be in the mood to eat here, however this is more a reflection of my palate then the quality or the service. Moral of the story, go to Nosh at least once and see if its for you! When I get another burger craving, I will be back!

After several endorsements, I finally got around to visiting Nosh. Knowing full well how first impressions can sour when people talk a thing up too much, I did my best to keep my mind open and impartial. I think they talked the place up too much. I tried the Nosh Burger, which was unique, tasty, and just about the messiest thing I've ever laid hands on. It felt like I was bobbing for burgers in a bucket of bleu cheese. Probably not the thing to order on a first date, but if you're alone and don't care who sees cheese and eggs running down your arm, have at it. The beer list was above average, with some obscure local brews in the mix. I always appreciate that. I guess what keeps Nosh at three stars instead of four or five is the price, which is far above what it should be. Portland has so many places of a similar caliber where you can eat for under $20. Part of a great meal is knowing your money was well spent, and after dropping nearly $30 just to get a good burger, fries and a beer, I left feeling duped. The best burgers in Boston, rated Forbes' 3rd most overpriced city in the United States, cost $9 after adding toppings and comes with fries. For what it's worth.

Started with appetizers and drinks. We ordered the ribs they were not fantastic but not terrible just average. Everyone at my table ordered some type of burger and they were all excellent. My husband had the Mac and cheese burger which was enough for 2 people! I was also most impressed that I could substitute my bun for a salad at not additional charge. The atmosphere was great and nicely located when catching a show at the Merrill Auditorium. I do agree with others in that you are elbow to elbow with other guests. If you want to have a private conversation this is not the place for you. I would definitely go back!

once i had nachos here and i swear to god they served them with whatever the 'artisan' equivalent of cheeze whiz is. despite being one of four people in the restaurant, we also saw our server only twice, the speakers were blaring 2006's best indie rock, and we couldn't take any of our food to go. i enjoyed eating the nachos while i was there, but when you serve me a gigantic wooden trough of tortilla chips with cheeze whiz, please allow me to not eat them all at one time

This place has always given me mixed feelings. When I leave I usually am pissed I paid so much, but while I am there I very much enjoy the food and atmosphere. Many of the menu items are creative and inventive using flavor profiles from our friend the delicious swine. Sometimes Wilber's contribution strikes me as being overly pretentious (e.g. the bacon dusted fries - which inevitable I inhale the bacon dust and spend the meal choking/coughing). The beer menu is ample and provides a variety of local selections. I was most pleased on my last visit that Nosh offered a variation of a Philly classic: the roast pork sandwich (better than the cheesesteak any day). The sandwich was assembled in true Philly fashion with roast pork, broccoli rabe, sharp provolone and long hot peppers. While I did not order the sandwich (I have gotten very accustomed to Portland ruining my Philly favorites), I was able to taste some of the sandwich. While it laced the pork au jus soaking and saturating the roll, the sandwich was still very tasty and amply portioned. Though I spent $16 and change on just a burger and fries, I will visit Nosh again and try some other items on their menu.

Skip it. We went here last night out of pure desperation when everything nearby had a long wait and we just needed something quick before meeting friends. The food was so salty we could barely eat it and the service was some of the worst I've had. It wasn't busy but we weren't checked on at all after our food was dropped off. I had to track down our waitress to ask for water and the check. It's a shame, I wanted to like this place. Decent beer selection. Bad food. Poor service. Two stars.

What can I say- if you love bacon this is the place you want to be eating at! Most things comes with Bacon. Though you can find things on the menu with out it - I have yet to try them :-) The burgers can get messy and the wait staff can be lazy- no realy -it becomes almost funny at times how unatentive they can be.... But hey if your not a vegetarian -then everthing taste great with bacon regardless of the service! Oh most importantly the beer selection is good....so there you have it bacon and good beer ...what more does one need to be happy!

Nosh has a great location, very creative food, great drinks and a sweet bar. Seemingly familiar food like burgers get a twist - like on the Mac and Stack, in which the "bun" is actually two slabs of breaded, flavor-filled grilled mac and cheese. And it is AMAZING. I had the grilled mac and cheese topped with Fritos and it was so rich and delicious it was brilliant. And of course the bacon-dusted fries were out of this world. Also, the beer selection was all, as in 100%, beers I'd never heard of. So if you like local, microbrewed and unique you're in luck. Mixed drinks are creative and lovely as well. Only downsides are: location means parking can be hard. Small and popular means you may be in store for a wait for a table.

So I stroll in thinking about all I've heard about the place and wondering if reality will meet expectation. Taking a seat at the bar I look at the Draughts featured in the chalkboard and opt for a "Funky Bow Pizzicato," a bourbon barrel aged porter. I like porters when they are done well and this one was very tasty. So after a couple of good swallows of the porter I decide to try the Grilled Mac and Cheese and to kick it up a notch I added the chipotle pulled pork. I was a bit pessimistic about this dish but when it arrived and I too the first bite I was truly surprised. The combination of the cheese, elbow macaroni, pulled pork and Fritos corn chips was really unexpected. I will be back.

This place was amazingly delicious but you need to know walking in that you are leaving in a food coma. The portions are extra big/ inappropriate and the calorie in take will be high. It'll all be worth it. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and loved it. Delicious, no regrets but I also had food envy of every person in my group. I was glad we went with a group of people so we had a reason to order all 3 kinds of fries. Everyone raves about the bacon dusted fries and I thought they were good but the salt & vinegar were where it's at. If you want to enjoy the available dipping sauces go with the salt & pepper. I went for lunch on a weekday and it was packed. Food still came out quickly and our waitress was great even with a large & loud group. However, it's so small with only a few tables that I'm not anxious to go back for dinner or on a weekend. I think I'd be annoyed at the wait.

My husband and I saw the bacon dusted fries here on the Food Network and added Nosh to our "I have a dream" list. We ended up spending a few days in Portland and made sure to visit. We ended up stopping in for a late lunch. There were just a few other patrons. I opted for the chicken fried biscuit and my husband got the crispy porchetta sandwich. We shared an order of the fries. The chicken biscuit was absolute amazing. It was like a big chicken patty, topped with cheese, a maple herb butter, and a sort of sweet shallot relish sandwiched between a jalapeño cheese biscuit. It was messy as hell and I loved every bite. I am a little embarrassed to admit I couldn't remember what my husband said about his sandwich as I was so impressed by mine. I had to ask just now. Apparently his blew him away as well. The pork belly was quite crisp and paired really well with the other toppings. His was also very messy. We both enjoyed the fries. They had a light, crispy consistency. I did not taste the bacon very much but I was dunking in the sauces. It was a fairly pricy lunch for 2 sandwiches and 1 fry. Normally I would take away 1 star for high prices but in this case, the food was really worth it! If you are looking for some unique offerings, I don't think you can go wrong here.

OH MY GOSH NOSH! We did try Nosh right after they opened and neither of us were impressed. Fast forward to now and BOOM, they have it together. The various flavors of fries are some of Portland's best IMO. The burgers are terrific although I would suggest adding a patty (you can do it for 2.50) as a single doesn't outshine the bun and condiments that well. Even though I can't bring myself to get anything but a burger the menu is pretty expansive with lots of great options. They have tons of awesome beer, try the Oxbow on draft! When I go to Las Vegas I usually eat at Holstein's who claim "Best. Burgers. In. Vegas." Nosh reminds me a lot of them except Nosh wins the french fry contest hands down. Nosh also is part of the Delta Skymiles Dining network which means you can get extra points when paying with your credit card if you're into that sort of thing. The only thing I dislike at Nosh is the seating arrangements. Everything is kind of squeezed in together. We prefer to sit at the bar but that can be a challenge at peak times.

First couple times I have eaten here it was great, the quality however had decreased with time. Last visit 4 homeless individuals walked in and used the bathroom in the back and left without anyone saying anything. Much more of a bar atmosphere with lower end cliental. Burger was thin and dry. The appetizers are the only reason to go now.

This is a spectacular eatery! There's nothing on the menu that we wouldn't recommend! They use great local ingredients and the menu changes frequently enough that yoy just keep coming back to see what new creations Jason has concocted We're particularly fond of the chicken wings, the tacos and the ribs... and of course you can't go there without having salt n' vinegar fries! Add to that the local beer selection and you've got one of our favorite places to eat!

Nosh is basically Woody from Toy Story. The old toy tossed aside for the Buzz Lightyears of Central Provisions and Vinland. The coolness factor may be diminished, but Nosh is actually quite good and fills a niche. This niche is pure, no apologies, meat. Hi vegetarians and vegans, you guys are great, but this just won't be the right fit. I'm sure you could find something, but it won't be easy. Dieters beware as well. Nosh should pass out Lipitor at the exit. The restaurant isn't big, with half devoted to the long bar and half composed of closely spaced tables. You'll know your neighbor. The beer selection is eclectic and a perfect mix of local craft beers with others from afar. I just wish they showed the alcohol percentages. With so many less known beers on tap, one could easily have two 9% alcohol beers before driving home. That could be trouble. At 5:30 on a Thursday the restaurant was busy, but not totally full, and the bartender seemed overwhelmed. Service has been hit or miss in general. The menu consists primarily of daily specials, burgers, sandwiches, and "noshes." Think Man vs. Food. Like a giant burger flooded with cheese and creamy sauce in between two donuts. There's not many simple items at Nosh. It's a different type of menu. And I mean this as a compliment, because Nosh usually is delicious. Yesterday the wings were some of the biggest and meatiest I've ever seen. Butter poached, potato starch breaded and coated with crushed peanuts and thai chili sauce, these are a serious appetizer. The traditional cheese burger (perhaps the only traditional item on the menu) was huge and solid, with a slightly different flavor. Probably from the pork that's mixed with the beef. The more adventurous burgers are better. I didn't order them yesterday, but Nosh is known for their french fries. I don't enjoy the consistency of the bacon dusted, but the sea salt are delicious, especially with one of the sauces. So Nosh won't be for everyone. But for those looking for different draft beers and fun, creative dishes (that may lead you directly to Intermed), it's a strong pick. Sometimes old toys are better than the shiny new ones.

Atmosphere: Nice and relaxed. Young crowd. Good place for drinks after work. Easy to grab a seat at the bar if there are no tables. Service: Good service, waitresses and bar tenders are attentive. Food: The meze and french fries are great starters. The French fries are amongst the best I have ever had and can be customized. We got the sea salt and pepper with jalapeño cilantro mayo and a fried egg on the side --- which was delicious. I like that all the sandwiches can be salads. Over 50% of the menu is beef/pork which limits me, but the chicken item was great and the tuna was good. Drink: The house white wine is ok - although it is fair to say that this isn't the place to get wine. The beers were too hoppy for my taste, but overall, the beer selection is solid per my friends.

2nd time here. Had Pastrami again. awesome. My wife had the tuna sandwich which she liked. She really liked the fries. Was a perfect meal after a schooner ride. Service was good. Wasn't that busy which surprised me for a late afternoon on a Friday.

I really wanted to love this place. I had heard great things about their burgers and I was definitely craving one so I decided to pop in and see what all the hubbub was about. I sat at the bar and ordered my drink. I quickly perused the menu as I already knew what I was going to order. After a bit of a wait, I finally flagged down the bartender to order. The place wasn't busy so I was a little annoyed that he wasn't as attentive as a bartender could be. I ordered the nosh burger and some of their famous fries. It took about a half an hour to get the food. Why? I'm not sure. As I said, the place wasn't busy at all. After I got my food I dug in immediately, as I was excited for this hyped up meal. Boy was I let down. The nosh burger consists of blue cheese, bacon, fried egg and vinaigrette. All I tasted was vinaigrette. It was pretty sour. The bun was completely doused in it. On a higher note, the fries were good. But there are many places in Portland to get great fries so that's not exactly a win for nosh. If you're looking for a mediocre meal with inattentive service, nosh is your jam. I however, will continue my hunt for the perfect Portland burger.

I want to be madly in love with Nosh, but I just can't find it in me, even after several stops in. The positives here are a decent beer selection, a good patio out front for people watching and really good pickles. Food though? Eh. Many items on the menu seem like they'd be great, comfort food. Right up my alley. On paper, the menu features novel combinations of sometimes exotic ingredients amidst decadent-sounding offerings like donut-bun burgers... But when it comes right down to it, everything seems (like the donut bun burger) a bit much, and after a few bites the illusion rapidly evaporates. The fries are case and point. Bacon dust fries? This sounds like the ultimate no-brainer. BACON DUST FRIES, JUST ORDER IT! Sadly, the "dusting" is more of a deep, salty armor encasing the fries. No subtlety. No room to taste the fries. One of my friends ordered them best: (albeit slightly drunkenly) "an order of fries but without all the stuff on them, please." In this fashion (salt and pepper), they were good, but nothing to write home about. That, and they're constantly shaking up the menu. Normally, this is great. Here, though, it means branching out when you'd finally found something passable amidst the overly sweetened, underwhelming offerings.

We stepped into Nosh during our trip around the Portland area so it was not a very long period of time that was spent here but the amount that we were was not all that enjoyable. It seemed that the bartenders behind the bar really wanted nothing to do with us after giving a list of items we wanted ... we were then shunned to go sit at a table and the waitress then took forever to come take our order. The part that I was impressed with here is the magically delicious bacon dusted fries with two dipping sauces with them. They were absolutely to DIE for. I had a cold and fresh Lagunitas Ale and it was also very good served in an authentic Lagunitas beverage glass. The table that we were rudely sent to was a copper top table top and the crowd was a strange mix of business with hipster with gangstah. Overall I don't see what all the hype is here other then the fries. I don't think i will be stopping back in here in the future.

Had the apocalypse now burger, which is a winner again. The tempura fried bacon, which was a dud. The one I had was cold and had really thick coating of batter. And the braised fried ribs, which was decent. Good sized portion for the money. I remember the burger though used to be bigger. So instead of raising the price they reduced the size which is ok but I really like the old stacked burger size.

The apocalypse now burger was the best I ever ate. So good! The staff was great. Reasonably priced. The fries (though I heard great things) were burnt and "eh" but overall it was amazing!

Nosh is your hipster restaurant meets bar, where you can feast on rare items such as the Apocalypse Now burger paired with something from a faroff microbrewery, all while your dog laps up some water while waiting outside. On my first alcohol-fueled visit, I had to try out the infamous bacon-dusted fries. While I don't think bacon needs to go on EVERYTHING, I agree that bacon itself is quite amazing. These fries though? They were not bacon dusted. It was almost like a bag of fine powdered salt had been dumped on top. The dipping sauces were unique, but I mostly used them to cover up the taste of the salt. HOWEVER, I did try their polenta fries. These were amazing, I don't think I've ever had polenta anywhere else, but I really don't need to because like I said, they were amazing. GET THE POLENTA! And finally, I will conclude my story with my most recent visit. I decided to venture out of my safety zone and try the Apocolypse Now burger (containing pate, foie gras, nosh patty, bacon, cherry jam, cheese, and probably more...). I'm gonna say... for $20 I was a tad disappointed. Sure, the ingredients are fancy, but I wasn't at all thinking 'wow! I can't wait to take another bite of that!'. It was just another burger, with lots of cool stuff on it. If you're a beer drinker though, they've got quite a nice selection, and the art on the walls is fun to take a look at too!

A Nosh cheeseburger offered a decent patty on a soft, delish brioche. But the Bacon Dusted Fries? Oh myyyyy! Thanks to a fellow Yelper's recommend, we tried these unique, sticky, flavor-packed spuds and were blown away by taste and texture. Greasy good, boardwalk-style, fat fries dusted generously with whatever magic mojo is concocted behind the open kitchen. Comfy atmosphere, downtown location, and plates going by me with some good-looking grub, creatively plated. While $10 is a lot for the burger size, the $6 fries were the toast of the takeaway. Nosh is a good, beefy bet in Portland.

Not a super huge fan of this place. Came in here for lunch. The staff was nice and the decor was great. I also like what Nosh stands for. The fries actually made my stomach hurt. I think it was cooked in too much oil because in every fry, I could taste oil. I prefer the sea salt & pepper over the bacon dust. Jalapeno pesto sauce was very spicy and good. Just be careful because there was definitely a kick. Chipotle mayo is good, cannot go wrong with that. Burger was good and typical. Good selections of beers. Overall, I think I went in on an off day. I would pass on this place next time if I was in the area.

I give this place 5 stars for the food alone which is the ultimate unhealthy food splurge on the peninsula, regardless of its 'fame' or service. Service has always been straight forward from my experience, which is fine because I am already drooling in anticipation for what I'm about to devour here (usually the corned beef reuben) to care about anything else.

Big portions and the food is fantastic. I had the Reuben with salt and vinegar fries and my friends had the burger, tacos and chicken sandwich. Rave reviews from everyone.

I suppose the only reason keeping me from giving Nosh one star is because I know they have a rotating menu. After having their Nosh burger the other night I don't think I'll be back anytime soon. Two friends and I shared the nacho boat which is pretty much a long rounded piece of wood that you would get sushi on, but with Frito chips, cheese, scallions, jalapenos, one big lump of sour cream in the middle, and some other randoms thrown in there (I think chicken?!). The nachos were okay - a little heavy but they're nachos so one would expect this. To go along with our nachos we had some good beers. If you like hoppy and dark beers Nosh is for you. They have a good draft selection and all around, pretty good beer selection. I ordered the burger after hearing everyone rave about it. I skimmed through the other items on the menu and figured since they're known for their burger, why not try it out. My friend ordered the falafel wrap (which I wish I had ordered). The waitress was polite and nice - nothing out of the ordinary there so we know service is pretty good. The burger came out and it was on a typical bun - nothing special there in my opinion - and I took the first bite. I don't think I read anything about hoisin sauce on the burger, but slathered on the bottom bun was hoisin, embedded into the bread. There was blue cheese on top of the egg, and then (no surprises here) the burger. After taking two or three bites to decide how I felt about this burger, I decided it was not for me. I took out the egg, scarped off the cheese, and took off the bottom bun (which was pretty much just hoisin sauce). Then I ate the patty and the top bun. Typically I never dissect my food like this, but the burger wasn't for me and I wasn't about to let half a bun and a burger patty go to waste. Needless to say I was less than impressed with this Nosh burger. In the past I know they have had avocado burgers, etc. so maybe that's something down my alley. This standard Nosh cheeseburger just wasn't my cup of tea. I also tried the sea salt and vinegar fries and they were a little too thick cut for my liking. A friend of mine told me that the buffalo fries were better so that's something to consider. Should you go to Nosh? Sure give it a try. Will I go again? Verdict's still out on that one.

Been here a few times. Burgers were greasy and fatty as if you'll get a heart attack after. Bacon dusted fries are really just bacon dust. Not worth it. Wings were salty. Overall, food is ok.. Service was slow which is a deal-breaker today. I tried to like this place.

The Dude often takes the family to Portland for a few days a year. Nosh is often a stop for us. Wednesday was a great lunch. Pig burger and bacon app was off the charts. Bacon dusted fries tied the meal together. Service was great and our server made great recommendation for dinner.

Headed out to Nosh on Saturday evening for Valentine's Day as well as my 3rd time dining here. The first two times I found the food to be pretty good, nothing special, but it was 9pm and we were hungry so Nosh seemed like a perfectly fine place to dine. +/-There is something very alluring about Nosh. I am in love with the high energy at the same time disking large crowds/close seating quarters. The energy can be both exciting and a bit intense/overwhelming (prepare to hear 100% of the table next to yours conversations lol). +/- There is something fun to be said about the almost "cafeteria style seating" at the same time the benches are not the best for comfort and relaxing. A large group table in the front can be a great way to engage in conversation with other patrons but not much room for your own space and private conversation. Overall the service was fine, polite and friendly I'm uncertain of her name. My only complaint was that after we had already finished our meal and paid the tab I felt pressure to leave. Working in the service industry myself I fully understand the need to keep tables open for the next customer as well as respect closing hours. We were finished with our meal at approximately 9:45pm and there were 4 other tables in the restaurant and closing time wasn't until 1am. I feel as though the waitress was planning on ending her shift and was eager to see us go. We stayed and continued our conversation for roughly 15-20 minutes after our meal had ended and then we proceeded to leave. Basically I got the impression that she would have preferred us to converse at the bar, as a non drinker I prefer to dine at the table. None the less this wasn't a huge deal but going out to eat is such a treat and no one likes to feel rushed. I'll probably eventually give Nosh another go. This is more of a place for friends to laugh and share drinks and food rather than to have an intimate date. Trying to have a romantic dinner here is kind of funny now looking back at it, now I'm realizing why I had noticed we were the only couple there! lol Non-the-less it definitely one of the "Must go to" places if you're new or visiting Portland.

I don't know that I would call myself a burger connoisseur, but I could certainly be happy eating burgers on a daily basis. (If I weren't married I probably would.) As burgers go, Nosh is fantastic. I get the pig burger (basically a bacon cheese burger), and never regret it. They have fantastic fries coated with bacon, buffalo powder, or salt and vinegar. (Salt and vinegar coated are my favorite.) In addition. their beer selection is very good, and the prices are pretty reasonable.

Nah. Nosh isn't that great of a place. Sure, it's a great place to stuff your face with fries and a burger but so is Wendy's. The service is my biggest beef - mostly apathetic and seemingly unhappy to be serving in my experience. Similar to my experience at Wendy's actually. The food itself is decent. I've had the burger which was honestly much better tasting than Wendy's but both leave me feeling the same way - Full but mad at myself. Ironically, Nosh means to snack lightly. I've never felt anything resembling "light" walking out of there. Maybe that's my own fault though as they do have a "noshing menu" which essentially includes cheese plates, olive spreads, pickles etc. those all seem over-priced to me though so I haven't ordered off that menu. As for the atmosphere, I really don't love it in there. They model their scene after a New York style deli but something feels unauthentic about it. Maybe I'm just bitter from a couple less than desirable experiences but I would just assume not go back. If I could drive thru and get the nosh burger and not deal with the scene: five stars. Wendy's problems get fixed, I'll be back.

Ok, the best hamburger in Portland, ok, for sure. They cook them well. I had a Mac and stack. The "BUN" on my burger was friend mac and cheese. No, not good for a diet or gluten free. BUT, good for comfort and too filling and delish! I even put a fried egg on it. I know, outta control. Hubby had a burger with bacon and no cheese on a brioche bun. Really tasty. We had cocktails earlier so we didn't partake in the fab bar menu they had. Our waitress and hostess were so nice and friendly. The wait was about 25 minutes for two people. You can share a table or get your own. You sit awfully tight though but that is ok. We talked to the next table and had a blast. They had nachos. The nachos came on a wooden tray that looked like a big boat. It was huge. We talked about where we have been and what we were eating. it was fun!! I love this place, but it is only for once in a blue moon cause it is waaaaay fattening.

I came here twice this week on vacation, both with big groups of people (8 and 17). The food is INCREDIBLE. Everyone at our table loved their dish and many of us shared because it was too good not to! Sarah was our amazing waitress for the group of 17 and both waitresses were so kind, patient, and automatically separated our checks without any sign of frustration or annoyance. We couldn't get over how awesome the service was each time! Wish I lived here... This would be a regular for me. Bacon dusted fries, caprese sandwich, the fried bacon with peanut sauce, Mac n cheese (so tasty, not bland like some restaurant Mac) the desserts, the burgers... Everything we had was incredible!

I had high hopes for this place. Had heard a lot of people talking it up. Decided to go to dinner, started out with a long wait awkwardly stuffed in a doorway then off to be stuffed on a long bench with other couples trying to enjoy a night out. Food wasn't up to par in my opinion. The bacon dusted fries everyone raves about...meh not that good. Maybe I'm missing something, I wanted to like this place.

I was in Portland looking for a late night/vegetarian friendly food when I came across this restaurant... I was not disappointed! When I saw Bissell Brothers on the beer menu, I was sold. Amazing food, the fried pickles were in a tempura batter that was insanely good. The French fries were incredible - with a solid choice of sauces. The falafel sandwich was well seasoned with a nice balance of fresh salad on top and crispy falafel with a fluffy center. Can't wait to return.

I have a love / no-love relationship with this place. On the love side, their sea salt and black pepper fries are nommy. I could probably eat a whole plate of them without stopping for air. On my most recent trip, I had the Grilled Thanksgiving sandwich to kick off the turkey gobbling season. It was very tasty, especially the chicken stuffing, even though the turkey was actually deli meat (bummer!). This sandwich was huge (comparable to its $12 price tag), so I only ate half and brought the rest home as leftovers. I'd have happily taken a $7 option at less than half the size since it isn't even close to delicious reheated. I wasn't surprised by the size though, their burgers are large as well. So what's the no-love? The service. I just don't understand it. Every time I have been here, I've felt like I'm intruding on someone's space and unwelcome. It wasn't quite that bad on this visit, and I was actually prepared to type up a review about how shocked I was to have a personable and helpful server at Nosh... when I suddenly was sitting around with an empty drink for 15 minutes and then it took more than 20 minutes to get our bill after our plates were cleared. I have easily forgiven such things during busy hours.. but it was lunchtime and only 3 tables were seated. Our lunch break ended up being an hour and a half long for no real reason. I actually prefer the times I've come here and just gotten an appetizer, drink, and fries compared to the times I've gotten a main course. I'll definitely be back, but only for noshing.

I got food poisoning here. It's very unpleasant. I'm writing this from the toilet. I got a burger with bacon and it tasted wet. I went home after and went to bed. I woke up at 6 am and was viciously sick. Now I'm in the bathroom and all I can eat are salteens.

Went last Saturday night (8/9) - second time I have been there in two months. Food is pretty good, a bit on the pricey side for some dishes and they frown on substitutions (hence the 4 start review and not 5). Atmosphere: Chill. 1st trip: Went with boyfriend and friend for late late dinner (midnight) - we were able to converse and had a table in the middle of the room. sadly outside was full. 2nd visit: dinner date with boyfriend around 10 pm. not really intimate or romantic as tables are close together but it was still nice. Service: Both times knew their stuff and were fast, friendly, and efficient - no complaints there at all Food: First time I had the falafel and poutine. Poutine was pretty good - needed more cheese - and falafel was good, but not enough falafel compared to the sandwich. Be warned that burgers and sandwiches do not come with fries - those are extra. Boyfriend had the ruben and said it was amazing. Our food plus 3 drinks and tip - the bill was $80 :( Second time i had the special, grilled mac & cheese (came with pulled pork but they moved it to the side for me). Pretty good, i left full, cheese sauce was good and had a kick to it but i wish they served it in a bowl and not a plate. It was macaroni topped with cheese sauce and not a thick mac & cheese. BF ate the pig burger and loved it and he tried the pulled pork and said it was "eh". i tried the BBQ sauce on it and agreed, it was "eh". Had the patio punch for a drink, tasted awesome but did not taste or feel any of the alcohol in it. Dessert menu looks amazing and I cant wait to try it i'll be back for sure to try new things. Pro: interesting takes on classic comfort foods and unique pairings Con: cost, limited outdoor seating

Some of THE BEST french fries I have ever had the chance to "nosh" on. We had the salt and vinegar - crispy outside, soft and warm on the inside, tangy vinegar flavor. My mouth is watering just reminiscing! The burger was fine...nothing to write home about but my husband's Reuben was special!!! Thick cut amazing corned beef made this easily the best Reuben ever.

I really like the location and ended up with a waitress that was really nice unlike some people that have reviewed Nosh before. It is in a great location, it is nicely designed, and has a really good beer selection. The reason I didn't give it more stars is that I didn't like the food. I read the reviews on the specialty fries so I ordered several versions. I really didn't care for any of them. In particular the salt and vinegar fries were too salty and too vinegary (I don't think that's a word). The bacon ones barely tasted like bacon and were kind of bland. I ordered the French dip sandwich. The meat was actually really tasty as was the bread but they seem to have a habit of putting weird things on the food to seem more sophisticated. I found those extras and the sauce to negate what would otherwise be a great French dip sandwich. I was thinking about giving this place a 2 but then thought that I would probably go back for the good parts and just not order the food so I gave it a 3.

Meh! Not great food. Just average. Loud atmosphere squished in very close to table next to you , vultures hovering and waiting for your table and kind of a hipster place. I think the reputation outweighs the reality. All style no substance.

Bacon dusted fries 5+ stars. Wow! They were every bit as amazing as had been described. Burger 3 stars. Burger is made with pork, therefore it needed to be well done. However, it came across as charred and dry. Quick service Tuesday night: 5 stars Average: 4 stars

OMG the greatest burger I have ever had in my life. Had the Pig burger and it was everything I dreamed a burger could be. We also got the jack Mac n cheese and put some of the sauce on said burger ... Yeah ... Awesome. The dusted fries are pretty awesome as well. Good beer selection and very cool ambiance. You will not leave this place hungry guaranteed.

What a sweet find on our first day in Portland! On a whim we went, and were treated to an amazing decor of graphic hand painted lettering, and a zillion choices of fine craft beer. Our lunch was comprised of amazing seared tuna, couscous and avocado lettuce cups as well as a delectable falafel sandwich

The fries are ridonkulously addictive. We could not stop eating. Then we both got stomachaches. Seriously, who could resist "world famous" bacon dusted fries? Not the two of us bacon lovers. We came here just for those, but we also ended up ordering a thing of the sea salt and pepper fries. Man, were they good. Extra crispy, exactly the way fries should be. Sauces were fun to dip in. In terms of real food he got the Nosh burger which was as big as his face and he liked it. I ordered the seared tuna salad and I liked it. It had pickled veggies which was a nice touch. Shipyard Pumpkinhead rounded out the meal quite nicely. Yum.

I loved loved LOVED this place! I didn't have an easy time dining out in Portland because I have a shellfish allergy, but Nosh typically doesn't serve much shellfish, and though they had lobster rolls they assured me that it is kept entirely separate. The food was creative and delicious! The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere cute and welcoming. A+ all around. I highly recommend the Nosh burger and the bacon dust fries.

Nosh, you had me at Bacon Dust and Poutine! Poutine to start with Allagash Black on Tap. Poutine, their delicious fries with gravy and local cheese from Pineland Farms!!! It was better than the several dishes of Poutine i have had in Toronto. I could have been satisfied with that, but I had to push on. Bacon Dusted Fries - OMG. Great quality and perfectly cooked fries with BACON DUST! Seriously! HEAVEN. I had the Nosh Burger. Perfectly cooked...honestly anything with an egg on it gets 5 stars :) I ate every bit of the burger. The garlic spread and the blue cheese and bacon...my mouth is watering just thinking about it again. Try it if you are in town. There is a parking garage within walking distance or parallel street parking - easy either way. Man Vs Food did not steer me wrong. I do want to try the Apocalyptic Burger because I love PORK BELLY!

Just OK. I came here chasing a meatloaf sandwich craving. My smothered meatloaf sandwich wasn't bad, but I couldn't really taste the meat under the onions and gravy. The bartender was prompt (a little too prompt; I didn't have a chance to wash my hands before he took my beer order and brought it to me) but too rushed to tell me about the beers on draft. It would be nice if the menu, made up as it was of loose pages, could have offered a few words about each beer. I was here once before 2-3 years ago and recall feeling just OK about my food that time too. Maybe I would have been happier if I'd had some of the notorious fries, but my sandwich was too big for me even to think about sides. If the bar were more welcoming I'd plan to come back for just a beer and fries, but... hmm.

The buffalo dusted fries were delightful. They were so good I almost ordered seconds! Also, I'm a huge fan of the large assortment of sauce options. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the burger (meat tasted off), though I remember loving it the last time I had it a year or two ago--I suppose something changed. But, the showstopper, the main highlight, was the Holy Shit dessert, the ice cream sandwich made from two dark chocolate sea salt donuts from The Holy Donut and the ice cream of the day from a local creamery. Well, the day I went, the ice cream of the day was nutella. "Holy Shit" is definitely the first thing I said when I tried it. The donuts were warm, they were delicious, they were cakey. The ice cream was wonderful. It is definitely in my top 3 desserts I've ever ever had, and I'm a chocoholic. I highly, highly recommend it! Mmmm

Saw it on TV had to try it. The foie gras was the only thing that made the burger edible....if you will not serve me a rare burger I will not be back...period! Excellent beer selection, but well done, dry, flavorless beef just killed it for me.

I had the Nosh Burger and I was thinking eggs with a burger ekkkkkk - I ordered it and OMG it was really good. The local Portland beer was also nice. I already forgot the name of the beer I drank but it was dark and smooth. Check out Nosh when your in Portland Maine. The owner or a waiter that should own it was very kewl and service was great.

Good ok drinks great staff fine but not warm or seemingly into their job. Not cozy, tv centric, again great drink selection . I had a ham n cheese w sriracha on ciabatta . Kind of soggy but good flavor, bar tender efficient but again not super warm. Staff seemed stressed, distracted. As did clientele . Been twice, wouldn't go again given the choices on congress. Having said all this, I wish nosh the best.

The service sucks! My brother hated their sandwich (French dip) which was all funky and had some kind of spicy mayo. The waitress seem indifferent. She mess up are appetizers, again she couldn't care less. This is an overprice hipster place. If you like shopping at Abercrombie and Fitch and buy overprice beat up shirts, this place is for you.

I'm usually very easy to please with a good burger and fries but I did not have a good experience this time around. When I walked into the restaurant there was no hostess but a sign that said please seat yourself. We walked right by looking for a table but eventually were told by a waitress that we had to wait to be seated. When we finally got seated after that small confusion the waitress told us what was no longer available from the menu which was only one item on the specials menu. The waitress took our drink order and she only came back with my drink and let my friend now that the keg just kicked on the beer he ordered. He then ordered two more beers which she informed him they were out of as well. It was a fairly loud atmosphere with very uncomfortable seating. We both ordered the pig burger and the best thing on the burger were the condiments and the bacon. The bread and actual burger were subpar. I compared my burger patty to ones that you get at a gas station that you can warm up in a microwave. The bread seemed like it was sitting out all day and not fresh at all. The fries were fairly good. The salt and vinegar was amazing but the bacon had no bacon taste to it. I don't believe I will be going back as it was not a great experience and it was ridiculously over priced.

This place is one of my favorite place to eat and drink after work. They have awesome fries and poutine. Last nite we got a bacon poutine (which was very delicious), crispy wings and 2 burgers. I'm not a big fan of burgers so i didn't try them, but the wings were kinda good, they topped with crushed pretzels which was interesting. Overall, this place is awesome to hang out with friends, get some snacks and drinks.

I've been here twice. The Nosh Bacon Dust fries = meh. The beer and wine selection left me wanting. The Fried Pickles were good. The Nacho Board was alright. I had some sort of cooked Tuna topped with avocado, mayo and kimchi sandwich and it wasn't worth finishing. The seared tuna taco special that I ordered on another occasion wasn't great. I ate only the tuna because that at least was cooked to perfection.

We heard about the bacon dusted fries and just had to sample them. Our first order was dumped on the floor by a collision with waitstaff and bar tender. They graciously took them off our bill and brought us a fresh order. They were a bit of a disappointment,a bit too greasy, but tasty just the same. The thanksgiving sandwich was absolutely delicious and large enough to share. It is a bit noisy but it's just that kind of place, fine dining it's not. Definitely a fun place to meet with friends for a drink and a nosh.

Bacon Dusted French Fries!!! I went to so many restaurants on this vacation, but the one I talk about the most is this place. I tell everyone putting ketchup on the fries actually ruins them! The burgers were also fresh and very delicious. I also enjoyed the atmosphere.

Stopped in before attending a concert at the State Theatre. Bartender was ok, and did a good job explaining various draft beer options, even gave me a couple small samples. But after I ordered my meal, I was mostly ignored. He never did ask, "how is your meal", or anything else. I ordered the Rib special. Ribs were not falling off the bone and had a weird pasty rub on them. I make far better ones at home. They were artfully displayed in a box like configuration with a tasteless cole slaw and small potato sticks place in the void between. Cute, but I'll take flavor over fashion any day when it comes to food. Bottom line. Overpriced beer & food. Indifferent service. I won't be back.

So where do I begin, great interior done really nice, I like the grafiti touch in the restroom with the diamond plated stall and stone sink. Now on to the food I tried the Reuben which was a fine taste to the palate, not too spicy. The bacon dusted fries were a nice touch, all in all. Good dining experience and better food.

So after the hostess not wanting to seat 1 person at a table for 2 I finally decided I was going to eat at the bar in order to get some food. I was rather hungry. On recommendation I order the bacon dusted fries and a nosh burger minus the fried egg. The fries were good crispy and we'll seasond. The burger was cooked well and the toppings combination was a good combination of flavors. Portion size was just right and I was full but not stuffed. I had a thistle cider with my meal and the compliment went well. Over food was good but not WOW. Barmaid was friendly. Overall it's O.K price was fair. $30 for a burger, fries 1 drink and a tip.

If I were rating nosh solely on the bacon dust fries, it would be a five star experience! However, the two hour wait, on concrete, while other people walk in and seated before us, it was clear there is no seating organization, takes the score way way down! The $20 apocalypse burger, was way overrated! The fried cheese curds were good! I would also recommend the fried chicken skins as a side!

I like lists so I'm going to break this down in a list-like fashion. 1) I actually think the interior of Nosh is quite comfortable. I like the decor and they had great music playing. 2) I ordered the Holy Hand Grenade which was pretty tasty but felt a bit overpriced to me. While I very much appreciate the Monty Python reference, I was a bit surprised that it was only one patty and didn't come with a side of fries, given the price. I feel like it's one of those things you get once so you can say you've had a hamburger with donuts for a bun. I can't see myself ordering it again. 3) Our waitress was the black eye of the night. She certainly wasn't rude but she also wasn't pleasant toward us by any means. I don't think she said a word to us when she dropped off and picked up the check. I don't need waitstaff to juggle flaming cats for me but I do expect the typical courtesies that go along with the job. 4) As far as unsweetened iced teas go, theirs was above average. So there's that. 5) Nosh has very tasty fries and that's probably the one thing I'll return for. I wonder if I can get them to go.

Really love the food here, but there is so much room for improvement! While waiting for our table (45 mins), we counted about 30 people who either came in and left or looked in and walked on. Issues: 1)We waited 10 min for someone to appear and take our name. 2) The staff does not know how to manage the tables effectively. The big table in the front that can hold 10 people, they wanted to put a group of 4 and a separate group of 2 at, versus filling it up with a group of 4 and a group of seven. They would leave a 2 person table empty while waiting for other table to empty. 3) Our waitress was lacking. We saw her a total of four times! She didn't even come back to see how our food was till we were just about finished! My husband would have ordered another drink if she had bothered to ask. I never got a chance to order a drink. Barely had enough water! 4) Hire a bus person. The waitresses have enough to do and cannot keep up! There is so much room for improvement. I hope this gets read and acted on. I would hate to see such a great restaurant close due to lack of good performance.

We really enjoyed this place. We were hungry and juicy yummy burgers sounded great. We had walked by this place a few times during our first 2 days visiting Portland back in May, and had heard about their fries and burgers. So we gave it a whirl on our second night in town and it was great. We normally eat late, so this night was no different and this place was one of the few places that served their full menu late, which is a huge plus in my book. Extensive beer/bar menu, enjoyed a few local tasty beers with dinner. Got the fried pickles and salt & pepper fries with our burgers. Very tasty!! The only complaint we had is that the tables were very close together, felt like we were sharing our table with the people on both sides, we heard every word of their conversations and could barely have a discussion ourselves b/c they can hear everything we said. Felt very invading and invasive at the same time. Very distracting too. It was really crowded for a weekday late night, a young college like scene, which isnt a bad thing, just loud.

After visiting Nosh 4 times, I can say that it has its fundamentals down. Their grass fed patties are juicy and flavorful, and their fries are fresh. From there, it depends on what you get, and what day you come. The flavoring on the bacon-dusted fries is addicting. I always order them"extra crispy," but on several occasions I've received fries that wilt as I pick them up. I'm sure plenty of people are satisfied with less crisp fries, and I'm usually appeased by the bacon flavor, but a little more consistency from the fryer would be nice. They get a little gutsy with their burgers. I've had several friends order the "Apocalypse Now Burger," which comes on a sliced doughnut and towers close to 8 inches. This, like their other designer burgers, is a big hunk of food and if you're not careful it can degrade into a pile of saucy muck in a matter of 15 minutes. Maybe there's a strategy to eating them, maybe not, but it makes me a little bit sad to see what was a tower of meat, bacon, veggies disintegrate like this. To avoid this struggle, I usually stick to a single or double cheese-burger, or the Shrimp Banh-Mi sandwich. As I mentioned earlier, they use good ingredients, and the simple burger lets these shine. All in all, this is a good place if you're looking for a quality burger in downtown Portland, just think twice to gauge your hunger, patience, and will power before you order a behemoth of a burger.

If I could put 3.5 I would but I don't feel it deserves a 3. Great beer selection and tasty fries. Don't get the chicken & waffle sandwich. It's nothing similar to the original pairing. Very disappointing. I should have tried a burger!

Visited on a Sunday night after 10:30 - still open! Good service. Decent beer selection. A few heart clogging burger options - I had the slab burger which comes between two prices of baked pizza dough. It was good.

Nosh is simply one of the hottest of the hot spots in this wonderful city of food, beer, cocktails, and fun. EVERY time I've been here I've had a terrific, memorable experience. Lunch with a girlfriend, dinner with a new interest, after party with the industry folks - all of these and more are were great at Nosh. Soooo looking forward to more now that I live in Portland.

The falafel is my absolute favorite, then they switched it to a pumpkin seed falafel which was terrible. Now it's switched back! We always get the salt and pepper fries with chipolte mayo. Sooooo good!

Always happy to go! Only reason that I give them a four is they are no longer taking groupons via phone witch made us pay 60 bucks that we were not planning to pay for dinner that night kind of ruining the entire thing. We told them in the beginning we had one and they didn't even let us know that they only took print outs till the end. Really a bummer.

Stopped in here on our now tri-annual food and beer binge from out of state..and came away wondering what the hell is going on at this place? #1 ranked burger..me-thinks-not is right.. Awful. I should have paid more attention to the menu..I ordered what I thought was a burger with cheese and egg on it with some fixings. I said midrare and the response was "we use a pork and beef blend' which is cooked through. This should have been my first warning, but was having a conversation and only half sunk in. What I got was an well done, shrunken excuse for a burger with some "blue cheese sauce" glopped on it, with some god awful balsamic? dumped on it. Was almost indescribable how bad this burger combination was, and how awful it looked. We had already sent back the app and probably should have been "those people" and just bailed, but the saving grace was the beer and conversation. Bacon dusted fries? awful and lacking the taste of anything resembling ...umm..bacon? Had to send those god-awful fried cheese curds back..they were fried to the point there was no cheese left in the middle and left us eating tough, outer coating pieces of corn meal. Disgusting. Had those taken off the bill. Service? what service..I had to ask for anything I wanted from the stiff of a bartender we had last night. He said three words and of course, that's when he was flipping us the check.. No excuse there. And your tip was a reflection as we are generally very good to well above average tippers. Local beers aplenty and was the highlight. OH, that and taking a piss on the way out. Cool artwork on the bathroom walls. Be warned. Bar food isn't hard to pull off, they just failed on a level I hadnt experienced in some time.

If you're looking for big burgers and an even bigger waiting time, Nosh is the place for you! Tucked into a corner building on Congress Street in the city of Portland, right across the street from Reny's. If you want to wait well over one hour to be seated, make sure you arrive promptly at the peak of dinner service at 6 pm on a Saturday night. Not only will you stand in line and watch other happy customers be served their food while your stomach groans and squelches itself in agony, you'll also be blasted with arctic air as more customers file in behind you. The place is in desperate need for expansion to accomdate its many customers (and a proper waiting area would be much appreciated by EVERYONE!). Once you sit down and order, however, your food will arrive relatively quickly in comparison to how long you had to stand in line and wait to be seated. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable about their menu, and will even offer suggestions for you if you find yourself torn between two or more choices. Most of my family who I dined out with ended up trying a variant of the hamburger. The burgers were huge and were served on impossibly tall, golden and buttered buns with shredded cabbage stuffed into each sandwich. All of the ingredients were held in place with a foot-long toothpick/sword. My cousin and I indulged in a very fattening meal of meatloaf poutine, which bore a strikingly similiar resemblance to Duckfat's poutine down the street in the Old Port. The food was served on long, charcutiere-style white ceramic plates. Only my sister, who has a notoriously tiny stomach, did not finish her meal. For dessert we had a Betty brownie, which was an intoxicating three layers of Oreo cookies, peanut butter, and chocolate fudge, also served on a pearly white board-like plate. It was drizzled with hot fudge and with a tiny puff of sweetened whipped cream. I was shocked at the size of the brownie (the size of my palm, and I have tiny Barbie-doll hands) considering the price tag. If I return here (which I plan on doing), it will not be during peak dinner hours. Rather I will find myself drifting inside long before the hungry, mile-long dinner crowd and before the rowdy college students inhabit the bar. I highly recommend coming in during slow times so that you can avoid waiting over sixty minutes just to sit down at a table. It is easy to see why this restaurant made it onto Man vs. Food.

Oh. My. God. Where do I start? A restaurant in Portland that caters to a bacon palette!? Sign me up! I have, in total, given this place 3 opportunities to live up to their "street cred" and celebrity. Visit 1: With some friends, a couple beers, two glasses of wine and an order of fries. The red wine was served in nothing more than a jelly jar. The dimwitted stereotypical blonde waitress mixed bottles into one of said jars. 45 minutes later, the fries arrived but only after reminding her around 35 minutes in. Visit 2: casual dinner date, grabbed a burger and some beers. Service was absolutely terrible again. Followed by was felt like food poisoning. Visit 3: dinner with a friend, bacon dusted fries (which were excellent) and bacon tempura - severely disgusting and undercooked. Service was sub-par but seemed an improvement though well inadequate. Certainly not worth the second round of food poisoning. Its bullshit that a place like this gets the attention of tv travel shows - fuck trendy, I want quality.

Nosh this. It was ok. The hype far outweighs the quality of the burger. I couldn't resist ordering the "Apocalypse Now" served as a pork and beef patty with American cheese, crispy pork belly, bacon, foie gras, house mayo, cherry jam all on a brioche bun for $20. Sorry, the burger itself was lacking in flavor and a bit dry. There was none of the delicious fat content that accompanies a great burger. In this case, the $20 you spend is for the toppings and not for the burger meat itself, which is disappointing. The toppings themselves were perfect, crispy belly, succulent foie gras, well-cooked bacon and a fluffy bun sized perfectly to the whole creation. Serious beer selection at this place, mostly local from Maine with stuff you've likely not heard of. A large selection of local bottled beers. The Zoes Beer from the Maine Brewing Company, the 1/2 Idjit Imperial Porter by Dugges and the Triple Bag from Long Trail were all excellent in their own rights. Given it was a cold January day; the thick and filling brews were perfect. My buddy ordered the "Nosh Burger" and enjoyed it tremendously. Both his and mine were cooked to perfect temperature at med-rare. My feeling is that the pork being used is too lean and detracts from the burgers juiciness. The texture of the meat is fine and holds together without problem. Bright sunshine fills the rectangular bar and seating area. Large windows allow for good people watching and the black slate bar is nice place for both food and drink. Professional service that is knowledgeable about the selection of beers and their individual qualities. Clean setting in the trendy new restaurant scene in Portland. I'm sticking with the Nosh Burger next time.

I've been to Nosh twice now and I am admittedly torn between 3 and 4 stars. After my first experience I would give it 4, but my last meal was more of a 3 so let's call it 3.5 to be fair. My first time through I ate a Reuben that was fantastic. Served hot and piled high. The fries always hit the mark along with the various sauce options. On my second trip I got a burger, and maybe my expectations were too high, but I've definitely had much better. Nothing was wrong with it. I expected great and got OK. My wife orderd a grilled cheese with marmalade and the bacon dust. I could tell she didn't like it, but thought she may not have been in the mood for all the heavy food. However, I went in to investigate for myself and have to admit the flavor combo's were not working for me either. Rare that melted cheese turns me off, but the marmalade just wasn't happening. The service has always been reasonably good. One negative mark was watching a friend try to customize a salad by asking for some grilled meat on it. The server had to come back 2-3 different times to make that happen. Also, it gets busy and does not take reservations. Usually you can mill around the bar and get drinks while waiting. In generally this is a cool place, but the food is almost always heavy so be prepared for some downtime post meal.

I really really like this place. And the people I bring here also end up really really liking this place. I have been here twice. Both times, people I bring end up saying "this is the best burger I have eaten ever/in a long time". I get the Nosh burger. It's messy. It's also effing delicious. I love blue cheese on a burger. Combined with egg, bacon and a couple other sauces, it's incredible. I don't consider myself a foodie, but this is the one dish that when one sauce tasted solo is a little wierd tasting, when applied to the total burger, it sings, I just think that's a cool event in the eating process. And the bacon dusted fries...oh man. So good. With a little run off from the egg, and a touch of ketchup both slathered onto a bacon fry, it's breakfast in between my fingers. I welcome the mess; because it lets me improv my food. When I first ate their bacon fries I thought I saw God appear before me, but it was just the waiter (who are all great) asking if I wanted another beer, which they have a great selection of as well. I HIGHLY recommend this place. I hears they may open another one in Portsmouth NH. I work there and can see myself eating there for break once a week with the new blood pressure meds to prove it. GO!

The food is interesting but a lot of it is very salty. I keep thinking this everytime I go, and every time, it ends up being salty. This coming from someone who probably puts too much salt on stuff anyways.

    (3)
  • Jim M.

Service was slow and confused. Food was way too salty. When I asked for a simple drink that should be available at any bar, they did not have the correct ingredients. Overall, I will not go back to nosh. There are too many great restaurants in Portland to waste another 30.00 there.

I really want to love this place. I really do. It's not terrible, but unfortunately I don't love it. I use to come here occasionally when the location was called White Heart and it still has a similar vibe/atmosphere to me. The drink/beer selection is fine. The food seems fine, but there are only one or two options for vegetarians. I'm also realizing now, based on their website, they are pretty happy with catering to mostly meat-eaters ("...NOSH...where omnivores assemble") The food prices are average to slightly on the pricey side. Aside from the food options, the overall feel I get from the waitstaff is an indifferent / hurried / "I wish I wasn't here" attitude. I don't think I've ever had a friendly experience that left me wanting to leave a proper tip. In fact, the last time I was there with a group of people the waitress never checked in to see how our food was or ask if we needed anything. She took our order, brought the food, then we saw her quite awhile later when she decided to bring the bill. It wasn't a pleasant experience. Overall, I'd maybe come along with friends for drinks in the future. But aside from that my experiences have left me wanting to stay away.

I had no idea what I was walking into when I stopped in for lunch this past Saturday. We were given the name of the place and told to make our way there. Then I looked at the menu and quickly learned why a member of our group so strongly suggested it. There were so many fun options, and they all looked delicious. I decided to split an order of salt and vinegar fries with a friend and also order the "Vietnamese Bun," which was a funkier version of banh mi - topped with not just pickled vegetables and cilantro, but also sweet chili sauce, crispy fried vermicelli, bean sprouts, and peanuts. It was $9 with just the vegetables and noodles - $11 to add pork. I added the pork. Other members of our party got burgers, sandwiches, and falafel. Everything was really inventive and seemed to be around the same price - what you'd expect to pay for bar food - but it could come out to be a little pricier because you have to order the fries separately. My sandwich was pretty good. The fried vermicelli noodles were a bit much, and the entire thing was a little messy because of the sweet chili sauce, but overall, it had a lot of great flavor. The fries were really good, and I would go back for beers and fries alone. They were fried to the perfect amount of crispiness, and the salt and vinegar gave them a great amount of zip. We got both ketchup and a horseradish mayo to dip them in. Aside from the food, there were lots of draft and bottled beers to choose from. I ordered a Rogue hazelnut brown and was served the entire delicious 22 oz. bottle, which was $10. We also had good service. We needed separate checks for each person, and also separate checks for alcohol, and our waitress not only split our checks, she made sure to split the fries for me and my friend who shared an order. I didn't notice at first, but it is a little cold in there, so I'd suggest wearing a sweater. If you're looking for a bar with interesting sandwiches and fantastic fries, I would say it's worth having to bundle up a little.

Attention all Bar and Restaurant Owners, When hiring wait staff, PLEASE inform them to: - Never use their cell phones in front of customers, especially when the place is bust and people and need something such as condiments, drinks, or something resembling a smile would be nice as well. - Never congregate in a huddle, gossiping about a boy you kissed or hooked up with last night. I would appreciate asking if I need another beer, or just checking in to see if everything is/was ok. - Lastly, NEVER come off as if you are being bothered when customer asks for some ketchup or mustard. The above and many other insulting/rude behaviors occurred this afternoon when we had lunch at Nosh. We had been here before a few times and had good to very good service. Today however was not our day. The waitstaff consisted of 3 female waitresses catering to a half full, Saturday lunch crowd. You would think they would be busy enough and would it have time to text or gossip behind the bar. Nope. At one time, all three were on their cellphones. I tried to take a picture but was not quick enough. I did snap one pic though which I will upload here. Anyway, was good but not worth putting up with the horrid service. I will be supporting DuckFat for all of my greasy needs. Stay far away!

Really neat place. Nice draft selection beer (nice to see not everything is an IPA). Their fries are BOMB.....as is their bloody ginny. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town.

After coming here a handful of times, I think I can make an accurate assessment of the place. I do love their menu and flavors- the chef is creative and the food is really quite good! I have a problem with the service, both at the bar and table seating. Every single time I've either waited too long for many open tables or the waiters have been rude, cold, inattentive or unaware. I waited so long just for utensils on an appetizer item. And another time at the bar, I didn't get served a drink on a slow Tuesday night for about 13 minutes! it's sort of unreal, especially when the food is delicious! maybe if management changes, I might enjoy a burger or fries again..... until then, sorry Nosh, I think we're breaking up.

Everything looks delicious, and taste delicious even tho it's super heavy, but every time we go out here we get stomach aches after, and we never order the same thing. we either throw up our have diarrhea :/ I know that's embarrassing but the fact that it happens every time to my boyfriend and I is just scary. So it may be one of the only restaurant that's open until 1, but it's not worth it. Not to mention it's over priced and served a la carte, so $12 for just a sandwich, then an extra $6 for French fries and $7 a draft beer.... We go out to eat a lot and Infiniti or The Great Lost Bear are MUCH better

I don't want to like Nosh Kitchen Bar for a couple reasons: 1. since it was featured on The Food Network, lots of nasty, judgmental folks flock here because it's now "cool" (and they'll tell you arrogantly that they totally knew about the place before it became big . . . they're dirty, lying hipsters! DON'T YOU BELIEVE THEM!); 2. the clientele confuses me; I don't know who their target audience is, but I do know that I'm not it, because; 3. every time I've come in here, I've gotten the worst attitude and service from the wait staff. Is there something about me that's personally offensive to these people? I don't know (maybe they're all freckle-haters). Why I DO like this place is their stupid french fries, which are both terrible and wonderful at the same time, and their stupid french fry dipping sauce options which delight me when I know they shouldn't. I definitely don't come here often, but every few months I usually get a massive hankering for their french fries. really late at night If anything, I suggest getting a to-go order of them, finding a nearby park, and enjoying your fries in peace sans staff attitude.

Best grilled cheese I have ever had. Before you say "meh, grilled cheese, so what..." English cotswald, Vermont goat cheese, French brie, a smidge of orange marmalade on thick, amazing white bread, grilled to perfection and sprinkled with Bacon Dust. For an extra $2, I got ham on this sandwich which was a delicious addition. Also got french fries with chipotle mayo, again sprinkled with the magic bacon dust that looks like powdered sugar. So. Good. Cocktail menu is fancy. Can't wait to try more of the menu. Good music and atmosphere too.

I'm so sad to write this. I was soooo excited to go to NOSH, but then.... We arrived right before the big lunch rush last Saturday. There was a big table upfront (seats maybe 10), but we were a party of 4 and the waitress asked us if we would wait for a 4 top. Sure no problem. She was VERY NICE and we got seated by 20 mins later. I was so hungry and wanted everything on the menu. I was excited to try things that were showcased on a food network show a couple months back. We ended up getting the fried pickles. They were a lack luster. Just missing something. They were spears, not chips and I think that had a lot to do with it. I would have skipped them. Then I got the NOSH burger. First bite was interesting. There is an egg on it and mine was super runny. Very messy. Good, but over powering. All the fries were great. The bacon dust powered where good.. but not the best thing I have ever eaten. The sea salt and pepper were good.. like regular fry, and the sea salt and vinegar better!! Overall, I think I would skip this place. On a happy note, the decor was awesome, and the people were amazing! Perhaps we caught them on an off day. Not sure.

First time here- unfortunately waitress was clueless. I asked about the beer special...and she had no idea what kind it was. Literally said " people like it. No one has complained..." had a cheeseburger, which was really good- but overpriced. Bacon dusted fries were good at first...but all in all too much. We only are half- and regretted ordering them. Good Food presentation and atmosphere.

FOOD: 4 (Burger); 2 (Fries) EXPERIENCE: 5 Ordered: **Nosh Burger **Bacon Dusted Fries If you want an unhealthy, juicy & delicious burger then I would recommend the Nosh Burger. It is AMAZINGLY good and definitely a great pick-me-up if you want to pig out after having a bad week. As for the Bacon Dusted Fries, I would rather go to Duck Fat. Their fries were overly drenched with what seems like oil and the powder did not taste like bacon (or it didn't remind me of bacon??). If you're looking for a fancy but DELICIOUS burger joint, try Nosh. And, if you're really fancy add $5 to your tab for Bacon Dusted Fries which aren't that great. We will never go back to Nosh because the service is disgraceful. We have been going to Nosh since its opening several years ago. We came in a few months ago before a show and the service was quite poor--the bartender (female) was rude and served us the wrong drink. When we asked for the correct beer, she poured half of a glass!? I could not make this up. The server was also abrasive. We were with friends that night and didn't make a big deal about it because we did not want to make anyone uncomfortable. Turns out our friends were equally dissatisfied with their meal as we were with the service. Nevertheless, we gave Nosh another try last night after a show for a late bite and a beer. Same rude bartender and server as last time and similarly disappointing service. We almost left as soon as we were served our beers but it took 10 minutes to get the bartender's attention to request the check at the not quite full bar. It is truly unacceptable these days, especially in a restaurant town such as Portland, to have sub-par service. I truly hope that people visiting my favorite city of Portland will choose a different spot because this place will leave a bad taste in your mouth, despite the fact that the food is absolutely delicious. Total buzz kill.

We had been trying to go to this place for a while, but I had been put off by the statement on the menu, "substitutions discouraged." As someone who can't consume gluten, this statement is often a hint that the menu won't be a friendly one. When we got there, they could "do the burgers gf if we take away the bun and put the meat on a salad," which is ok except then it's not a burger. Anyway, there was really only about two or three items I could eat, and the one I went with, the Nacho Frito Board was really disgusting and not suitable for a dinner. $13 wasted, in my opinion. I was with two others who each got a burger and reported better success (the Nosh Burger was just "ok" and the pig burger was "great"), but since this is my review, I can only offer two stars and the promise I won't be coming back.

After seeing this place on Man Vs. Food, just like everyone else, I became somewhere between enamored with and fixated on getting my hands on an Apocalypse Now burger. I used the excuse of attending the US Open Cup match last may between Portland Phoenix and the Brooklyn Italians to get a little pre-game Nosh on at the Kitchen Bar. (ugh, I know, sorry.) While I walked in with every intention of going for the Apocalypse Now burger, In a rare moment of lucidity for me, I started considering all these sensible factors like the quality of potential toilet facilities at the game, and the length of car ride I had in front of me for the return trip to Central Mass. I further rationalized my wimp-out with the logic that I could save it for a return trip. So now that my ego was damaged, I needed something to build my sense of fat boy pride back up, and the menu was not short of delectable alternatives. I started with an Allagash White which was awesome by the way, and their signature Banh Mi. This was no ordinary Banh Mi however, this had a multitude of toppings and sauces covering the 3 different kinds of meat in there. The bread was also not a traditional hard crusted french Banh Mi bread, but a softer variety. Im usually skeptical of messing with tradition in this manner. It begs the fundamental question: "Is this really Banh Mi, or is this something altogether different?" I think it actually is a lot more Banh Mi than not, and all the flavors do seem to work well together. After I finished that off I found myself still with a good 45 minutes to kill, so I came back to the menu for round 2. This is where my life changed in a deeply fundamental way. The notion of Buffalo Pig Tails was something I just could not ignore, The confluence of the fatty goodness of pulled pork, with the succulent familiarity of buffalo waing (yes thats how its spelled) sauce, all to be dipped in creamy blue cheese. The next 10 minutes were a blur and I slipped into a pig tail induced "itis". A strange feeling washed over me, and I felt simultaneously stuffed to the gills, and ethereally light. I'm sure I was looking a hot mess, as I could feel the sauce dripping down my face. I ordered another Allagash and pressed the cold glass against my head, before washing the last bite down with a monster swig. I've since noticed that these pig tails are no longer on the menu, and I understand if you find yourself questioning the veracity of this transcendental experience, but alas! I have pictorial proof! I also have an un-cashed rain check on an Apocalypse Now burger, so brace yourself Portland, I will be back.

College, trendy hipster vibe for carnivores is the best way to describe the setting. If I was to ever go vegetarian, and I can't see that happening, I would gorge myself on the Apocalypse Now Burger first. It is outrageous. Pork belly, hamburger topped with foie gras with sweet onion relish and not for the faint of heart. I thought it would be a mess to eat but was prepared and presented excellently. And a side of the bacon dusted fries. Momma, Mia! Get me some angioplasty, STAT! Oh there are plenty of good brews to choose from as well.

I came here thinking that I would get an awesome Apocalypse Now burger like the one I saw on Man vs Food. One would think that for a $20 burger, Nosh could have afforded to put in a sizable slice of fois gras. Sadly when I took the top burger bun off all I saw was a tiny sliver of fois gras. Very disappointed with Nosh trying to capitalize on their Man vs Food appearance and not living up to its burger that appeared on the show. Also we were one of 2 tables in the whole place so we were very surprised that our waitress was very unattentive.

I had read many good things about Nosh (though I'm not sure where, as Yelpers don't seem to love this place), and a friend was in town visiting, so we decided to try it. Our waitress was very helpful, which was great because I had a 6mo old and a 3 year old in tow. The menu was kind of small, and everything was pricey. $45 for three burgers and one order of fries? That's a bit outrageous. The burger was ok, but the toppings made it very mushy. And the famous bacon-dusted fries? Good, but nothing to write home about. It wasn't bad, but I'll definitely try other places before coming back here.

We were looking for a place to have a late snack on a Saturday night and found this little gem. *Service was decent. Not super friendly, but not rude *Salt and vinegar fries were fantastic *Corn dogs were amazing *Don't bother with the fried pickles *Major points for creativity, flavor and atmosphere

Pretty decent for what it is. Appeals to the 20/30 age range. Some good local beers on tap. The menu seemed to have a lot of pork options. I had the falafel. It was really nice.

[4 visits] I've been mostly satisfied with the other burgers I've tried, though I think in general the buns are too soft. Texturally things are more towards the soft and greasy side than the crunchy-juicy side. They seem to have something against vegetables in the burgers... Service is standoffish at times. As I noted in my previous review (based on my first visit), the Apocalypse Burger alone is worth a trip to Nosh.

Nosh is a fun bar with a great menu. I will make this place a regular stop on my visits to Portland. We just had a sampling of the dumpling and Nosh board along with some fried pickles and kimchee. This place has a playful way of plating and presentation which works well because the food tastes great. Look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Portland. We love the Nosh Burger, and most recently tried the Holy Hand Grenade Burger. Both are out of this world! We also love the bacon dusted fries. On one of our visits I had some sort of fried avocado wrap. I got it with a fried egg on top. It was INCREDIBLE and I DREAM about it! I haven't seen it as a special since then, unfortunately. Hoping they bring it back, perhaps as a permanent menu staple!

The complaints about this place are silly. NOSH is a sports bar with incredible food. Come here with the attitude of expecting to watch your choice game on TV, then order some of the most indulgenct and fattily satisfying burgers and tries ever. Draft beers are top notch and honestly the service is pretty good, this isn't some stuck up cheese and wine situation. Be good and they will to you. ask for something if you want it. a cool place to disappear on congress street.

I've been to Nosh a few times since they've opened and I have to say their food is really quite delicious. From the Bacon dusted or Salt and Vinegar fries, to the burgers and other sandwiches. I highly recommend the grilled cheese that's filled with Goat, Cotswald, and brie cheeses with just a bit of orange marmalade and topped with bacon dust. You can also add smoked ham which just makes it that much more drool worthy. But, if that's not your taste then just make damn sure you do not make the mistake of leaving without having their fries. Overall a great burger and sandwich place in Portland. Only complaint is that parking is near impossible to find even during the week, so be sure to come early!

Five stars for the taste. One star for the way I feel after I eat it. Average = 3 stars. I'm not a health food nut, okay? Fried potato, be it in crisp or French fry form, is the substance that will kill me someday. I'm just saying, if you feel completely nauseous after a meal (haha nosheous, get it?) then there is a good chance that the food was the equivalent of sugar in a car's gas tank. Nosh's fries are ridiculously good. My friend pointed out that they were "twice fried" making them extra crisp. The salt and pepper fries are the best. What's bacon flavor without the bacon texture? Answer: bacon flavor. It overpowers the already delicious fries, gilding the lily as one might say. I always get the banh mi. It costs 400% more than a banh mi you might get at a Vietnamese deli, but I don't think there's much competition in Portland, and damn is it good. Thank you Spain*, for inventing mayonnaise. *edit. I just looked on wikipedia and found that mayo was invented in Menorca and popularized by the French.

The service here on a Tuesday for lunch was terrible. The seating here is so limited that you have to stand around and wait for other people to leave, and then sit at a dirty table before someone else snags it since there is no hostess to direct traffic coming into the place. Once we sat down, we waited forever for a waitress to clear the table and take our order. Not cool since we had our infant with us and we had limited non-fussing time. Even without the infant, though, we would have been disappointed with the service. It was sloooooooooooow. My husband wanted to try the Apocalypse Now burger since he is a huge fan of Man v. Food. He ordered the two-patty version and only ate half. It was "too messy" and "very rich" he said. Definitely NOT worth $20! I ordered a $9 cheeseburger and it was good but I didn't like the pork/beef blend. It tasted weird. The bacon-dusted fries were freaking amazing, though. So greasy, crispy, and delish. My parents split an oyster po' boy and they said it was very good. The beer selection was great, but we only tried one craft brew because it took so damn long to get anything from the waitress. Overall verdict? Overpriced since the food is so-so and the service is awful. We probably won't be back.

My date and I were sent here on a recommendation from an old friend and her boyfriend. Because I want this girl and her boyfriend to still be friends with us, I shall put on the disclaimer that I realize that people have different tastes for things, so my hatred of this meal (in contrast to their love for Nosh) should in no way jeopardize the integrity of our friendship! We were told, one evening, that we absolutely MUST go to Nosh for both the Apocalypse Now burger and the "famous" bacon dusted fries. Loaded burger? Fries dusted in bacon? You're speakin' my language, friends. OK, I'll bite (pun intended). So we took a little journey to Portland to discover the "wonders" of this meal. Hell, anything named after a Coppola movie is OK by me. In hindsight, perhaps I should have waited for the redux to be released. Always better than the "for the masses" version. The Apocalypse Now burger was a pork/beef patty topped with pork belly, foie, bacon, cherry jam, mayo, and American cheese. Because there is pork in the patty, medium is the least-cooked you can order this. Let me tell you up front that this burger, with one griddled (read:flat) patty, without sides or fries or anything, is $20. In Boston, i am accustomed to paying $20 or so for a burger...but that burger is the Big Cheese of burgers - best in the city, and always comes with fries (think: Craigie burger, Bristol burger, Radius burger...all under $20, all come with fries, ALL BETTER THAN THE APOCALYPSE NOW BURGER, and are all served in a much nicer restaurant in a much larger city). Fail. Already. So this burger comes out dripping in grease, given all the fatty things on it. There is one thin, griddled patty that you can barely taste or feel anyway because of the other, squishier toppings making you forget you're actually eating a burger. The foie, the belly, the jams and mayos...this burger is so greasy and so squishy, it feels like you're biting straight into a giant ball of squishy, warm, congealing fat between two rapidly-moistening buns (TWSS). In an odd twist of cruel fate, the only flavors discernible in any bite were the cherry jam and the American cheese...so...I could basically make this flavor profile at home. The "famous" bacon dusted fries were covered in this flour-consistency white powder that left a film on my hard palette with no accompanying flavor. Apparently bacon is freeze-dried and then ground up and then sprinkled all over the fries. This basically means that the bacon is very fine (like the consistency of powdered sugar) white dust that collects in clumps and coats your fingertips when combined with the hot grease of the french fries. I wouldn't have minded the mess if the bacon powder had good flavor or texture. However, the freeze-dried-ground-fat just served to coat everything it came in contact with with a greasy film, and the bacon taste was nowhere to be found. I don't understand why one would do such a thing to bacon. Can't you just crumble bacon pieces onto the fries? Why the powder, Nosh? It's gross. I know that people like to liberally use the term "it's like crack" when describing yummy things like bacon, but please, PLEASE don't take that literally. Upside? Decent beer list, and I sampled an MBC Peeperale on the waitress' recommendation. The decor is sparse and modern, like you see in many gastropub-like bars. The service was a bit too hands-on, but the waitress was nice. Sadly, I will not go back.

After seeing this place on Man v. Food, i thought I'd get a burger here. However, while the burgers certainly looked delicious, how do you say 'no' to a Reuben made with slow cooked brisket? So that's what I had. Holy Crap, that sandwich is so good it should be considered a controlled substance and regulated by some non-descript government agency! The brisket melts in your mouth, the bread is beyond conceptualization, and, well, everything else on that puppy is un-friggin-believable! If you have a brain in your head, go to Nosh, get the Reuben or forever regret your sad and miserable life without this experience. Oh, and the 'bacon dusted french fries' are killer. Probably will give you a heart attack over time, but it will be worth it. Go to Portland, go to Nosh, get something good, and then you can die happy. I highly recommend Nosh!

Went for lunch with coworkers.... Bacon dusted fries were good, crispy. But nosh burger was very lacking. Not constructed well at all, too many drippy ingredients. Reverted to a fork after the first bite, and even had to deconstruct it further after that. I do appreciate and love a good egg on my burger but was also accompanied by too much blue cheese sauce (again, dripping) and did not care for the vinegar sauce either. Patty (pork/beef mix) itself did not stand out for me. Would be willing to try other things on the menu other than burgers based on good reviews...

Spicy garlic pickles - these were regular pickles lol. I was let down. Crispy avocado and tuna - one of the best avocado appetizer dishes I've ever had. Couldn't get enough of it. Apocalypse Now Burger - patty, American cheese, crispy pork belly, smoked bacon, foie gras paté, mayo, cherry jam, and grilled brioche bun. date just had to have this when he saw it online. It's basically the reason we came to Nosh. I don't even like pork and I enjoyed splitting this, mostly because of the cherry jam. Would've loved to try the spicy fish fry but I was too full after all of that. Service is also helpful and friendly here. Worth a stop if you're in town.

Back again, and still so very very good! On my latest visit I was as part of a group of ten people. I love Portland's many fine places to dine, but still consider it to be the land of the tiny restaurants. That Nosh could easily accommodate such a large party on a super busy Saturday is just amazing! We started off our feast with a large selection of Nosh's fries including the soon to be world famous bacon dusted fries. So much delicious balcony goodness in every bite! So good in fact, that the group consensus was that Nosh's bacon dusted fries are hands down the best fries to be had! Moving on to the main course, I had the Cassoulet Hoagie, which is exactly what it sounds like:rich duck confit, delicious sausage, tomato, and white beans all in a crusty roll from Southside Bakery! I love cassoulets, but somehow putting one in a bun makes it so much better. Mmmmmmmmmmm!!! Happy, happy!

I used to live directly across the street above 555 for awhile. I ate at Nosh a couple of times when it very first opened. I was not impressed at all. Too pricey, too trendy. I did not like the feel or the atmosphere at all either. The new interior is very nice, I just did not like the VIBE at all. The food was ok but noting to go on about or keep going back for. The staff was not very attentive at all. Too busy behind the bar talking. I loved this place when it was the WhiteHeart. Oh well, everything changes.

Awesome place that I can totally imagine in LA. The menu had some creative twists on common favorites like wings and burgers. Very good selection of beers and signature cocktails. Very hipster with the whole beer and bacon focus. I had the wings and bacon dusted fries. So freaking good. The wings were some of the best I've had. Crispy on the outside and still moist on the inside. The bacon dusted fries were addicting. I had the herb maple butter dip which was a perfect complement to the salty bacon flavor. For drinks, I ordered the mango mint sparkler which was a sparkling wine base. Refreshing but I liked the food more. Lots of seating and attentive service.

I don't really like Burgers. I've just never been a burger person, but when I was pregnant all I wanted was burgers and steak. The Nosh burger is just the most delicious burger you could ever imagine. It's juicy and has a blue cheese sauce and a roasted garlic balsamic sauce and a runny egg and bacon. I'm practically drooling just thinking about it. Add some bacon dusted fries (one order is enough for two people) and you've got magic on your table. Only downside is we almost always end up with an exceptionally rude server. It's a bummer for an otherwise excellent atmosphere.

We stopped by for lunch based on a few referrals. We have two summer-y cocktails, which were both very good. My poutine was pretty good, but was siding a little less on 'poutine' and a little more on 'garbage plate' (that's not an insult, Garbage Plate's are an upstate NY thing). Again, good fries but not great. My wife had the Apocalypse Now Burger, again based on referrals, and she didn't really like it. The sweetness of the cherry jam was so overpowering, it was just an incredibly sweet burger that tasted of pure jam and nothing else. Even once you took the jam off, the burger just didn't hold up. And it was a shame because it looked and smelled great otherwise. Overall, a 'Good' experience in the literal sense. Not 'Great' and not even 'Very Good'. But between our friends' referrals, the other items we saw, and the overall experience, I would definitely give them a second chance and go again.

Nosh has been one of my favorite restaurants in Portland since the doors opened. Having moving to Florida last October and coming back to Maine for a short visit this week, I visited Nosh for the first time in almost a year a few days ago. I can't describe my happiness walking in the door. I miss this damn city's restaurant scene so much. Anyways, onward to talking of the restaurant itself. Best fries ever. Ever. I already knew they were but I am glad to see nothing has changed. They are so flavorful and crispy and perfect. I got sea salt and pepper fries, as I always used to. I've had the vinegar ones, which I like, but sometimes are just too intense. The buffalo ones are awesome and I don't eat bacon so I can't comment on those. I don't know why people bother asking me if I want to share an order, because I don't. I almost want to eat two orders myself. Anyways, sauces and condiments are one of the only reasons I breathe. I got chipotle mayo, sriracha mayo, and blue cheese. All were incredible. They really have the best sauces. RIP tobasco honey mayo. I then got the Ratatouille Local One sandwich which was on special. So flippin good. It had grilled and marinated zucchini, squash, eggplant, sweet onions, roasted garlic, pesto, feta, arugula and romesco sauce on ciabatta bread. The bread was fabulous. The sandwich was fabulous. I was so happy to be back. My brother got quite an intense burger, with the buns consisting of fried mac and cheese patties. I have not ever seen anything like it. This place is truly unique and delicious. Their cocktail list is pretty great too. They make delicious drinks. I had a cucumber gimlet with Hendricks gin. Loved it. Was perfect. And it came in a pint glass. That's what I'm talking about. I feel sad for anyone who doesn't understand how good this place is. I want to go here 17 more times before I leave in 3 days, but I just don't think that is possible.

This place was decent but waaaaaaay over priced. Decent beer selection, decent food. I got the chicken souvlaki and wasn't really impressed too much by it. French fries were excellent, however they don't come with the $11 sandwich which is ridiculous and were an additional $6. So $17 for a pita with barely any chicken and fries. Zzzzzzzzz

We had some time to kill and decided to give this place a try. Afterall, Nosh received a glowing review on Man vs. Food. It was Saturday evening and the place was not busy at all. We were seated right away. I already knew what I wanted (Apocalypse Now) so I didn't even read the menu. My daughter ordered some fries. The food came out after about 20 minutes and my first thought was, Wow, this is smaller than what they showed on tv. Despite the pork belly appearing overcooked the burger was good. I wouldn't get it again though (mostly due to the cost, not the taste). Overall, the food was good and the service was good.

I have to say: my first impression of Nosh was in another life, right when they opened, because they were conveniently below the Winslow Lofts. It was not catastrophically bad but they had not hit their stride yet. No longer. Have had drinks and food here a couple of times recently. Good solid signature cocktails, innovative or unique twists on classics. I was also lucky to be here on the day Foundation released Epiphany and get the beer's backstory. Perhaps I am conditioned by the name. I always tend to nosh here instead of opting for their bodacious-sounding and oft-praised burgers. A pu pu platter special really wowed me. Perfect size and functionality for sharing (of course), expertly presented (NB: if it involves fire I am 100% in), nice interplay of tastes. Nosh has achieved the balance of tradition and innovation I think they always intended. Yum.

Great great food! I'm a chef, and love flavors and textures..spot on crispy crispy fries with the poutine, right amount of gravy, the lick! You really should go with the bbq pork cheesesteak, one of the best sandwiches I've had! Mac n stack burger was clever but really really heavy..burgers have multiple ingredients and lots of flavor.. Get the garden gimlet with Hendricks. ..new fav cocktail!! Ask for z she's awesome..we will Def be back!

Much like my high school boyfriend, it's is true that Nosh is all hype and no game. I hadn't ever been to Nosh and on our way to BODA tonight we decided to change courses last minute and try nosh since I had heard awesome things from other people who had been. We were seated right away, Which was nice for a change. Saturday nights downtown aren't usually so quick. I'm not in love with the seating arrangement. Tables and ambiance are cool, but I was elbow to elbow with strangers. Luckily they were nice, but it was impossible to talk to my boyfriend and not all of them. Beyond that, our waitress couldn't reach us. Soooo... We played three table plate pass! Again, great, patient neighbors. It took nearly 45 minutes from when we ordered until when our food came out. I ordered the Mac stack because they were out of pizza for the slab burger. I was hoping for homemade fried Mac with real cheese. I did not get that. It was bland, kinda slimy, and the breading was burnt from staying in the fryer too long. Dressings and seasonings otherwise were good. I will say that I asked for a well done burger and mine was medium. Whatever. At that point I just ate it for the sake of eating. We didn't bother to stick around for dessert, but instead opted to go elsewhere. The bacon fries were okay. I wasn't wowed. They were good fries but really soft. If you want fries, just hit Duckfat. Overall, I found the experience lackluster. Flavorless. The highlights: good beer selection, fast bar service, great servers, space and concept. Low points: bad spacing, no culinary follow through. Next time we WILL be going to BODA. Sorry, Nosh, but it just wasn't meant to be! Like that old boyfriend it was a great idea at first, but sometimes things just aren't what you expect!

That macaroni cheese patty burger was Gods Gift to Earth. The applewood bacon was heaven sent and actually tasted like Fresh apples picked from Adam and Eve. The french fry dipping sauces were also tasty. This place has amazing ideas and one hell of a burger. Clean overall look, and you can watch the food be prepared. The reason its getting a 4* in stead of 5* is because a 15$ burger should come with fries. Spent 55$for 2 burgers, 1 order of fries, 1 beer, and a soda , plus a 12$ tip -_-

I'm staying at the Westin and asked everyone where to go and eat and they all said Nosh so I went. Atmosphere is cool, place was packed, layout was a little weird but everyone there was cool. I drank the Tributary Pale Ale all night, I dug it. I chose the fried spicy garlic pickles and they were salty f'ing amazing. They burned the shit out of my mouth because I could not wait to try them. I would go there and order a bunch of stuff just to try. I wanted like 9 other things on the menu. For din din I got the taco's. They were a little too spicy but I took it and I liked it. I'm paying for it today but at the time wow amazing. Definitely a place to come and try. I can see how when it is super packed the food could take a long time though, one chef for the whole restaurant. So are here again for dinner!! I ordered the French fries salt and vinegar style and honestly the best French fries I ever ate!! Ordered the Fried Ribs with some Asian sauce and again, amazing. The beer selection was off the chart! This is my favorite part about this town!!

Came here for beer and food with friends. I got the poutine and a BBQ pork cheese steak sandwich (something like that). The poutine was one of the better ones I've had outside of Quebec. It was a little too salty, but I could easily ask for less salt next time. The cheesesteak/BBQ pork sandwich was superb. There was a very nice blend of flavors in there. We got patio seating, since it was crowded inside (Saturday evening norm, I would assume). Our service was still very quick, though. Our waitress, Charlotte, was really on top of it! She had a great, friendly personality and was very accommodating. I would certainly come back again for some food before going out into the Old Port for the night.

Excellent brisket sandwich with crispy cabbage and fried onion strings, pickles, sweet BBQ, and something spicy. Also had a very good curried falafel in a handmade pita. Waitress was super attentive, always refilling water glasses, and helping out by going back to get different types of containers to most conveniently hold leftovers.

Rainy, raw evening...looking for a nice place to meet a friend. Trying to decide what to do for an early dinner?...Where can a group go after work for some diffrrent snacks and drinks ?Nosh is the answer. If you decide to go, go early in the evening...the place fills up fast around 5 to 5:30 and there is usually a wait, first come/first serve, no reservations or call aheads. Sandwiches are great, fresh and made to order....I went off the grid and ordered a BLT on flatbread....they accommodated me and it was amazing. Grilled to perfection, piled high with lettuce, tomato and very good bacon with a touch of mayo. We aldo ordrred the rueben...grilled, dripping with melted swiss....prefer it with cole slaw instead of kraute but its not available. The special of Poutine (fries with homemade chicken gravy and Pineland Farms cheese curds----OMG!) was great...hot, crispy, the gravy was flavorful and the cheese curds were plentiful. I am part french and this dish is a staple....this was done very well and should be a standard on their menu. Service can be a little slow when they are packed. The next table had the fish sandwich on the chiabata bread that looked and smelled amazing...falafel and burger on the other neighbors table also looked huge and worth trying. Whether you are looking for a meal or a snack to share, Nosh probably has something for you....the fries alone are worth coming there. Bacon dusted ( don't question it, just enjoy!)...sea salt and vinegar, buffalo......they are all over the top. Just thinking about the bacon dusted with Bleu cheese dip is making my mouth water. Prices for most sandwiches start in the $10-$12 range, bring a companion and order a few items and graze....your mama did always tell you it was good to share!

I love Nosh so much I would marry it if I could. They can do no wrong in my mind. I love the atmosphere, so simple and so chill- for lack of a more accurate feeling. It's like comfort food taken to the millionth level. Fried macaroni & cheese topped with so much more gooey cheese topped with frito lays chips? Fries that taste like magic? Grilled cheese and tomato soup that is so good you don't even mind paying $10 for it? Snoop Dogg on the radio? YEAH, we have that here. Plus, there's a ton of local beer and it's all priced very reasonably.

I've been a fan of Nosh since I admittedly saw it on Man vs. Food... I know, I know I'm "one of those", but the burgers are sooooo good! I believe they're beef and pork mixed and cooked one way only. I always get the Pig Burger (cheese burger with bacon) and seem to never be disappointed. My favorite fries are the salt and vinegar. Everything is very flavorful. Vegetarians beware- I'm not sure there are many options for you, but the fries alone are worth the trip. The service has always been perfectly fine when I've gone. They're not super over-the-top friendly, but they're attentive and genuine. I've tried the bacon dusted fries before and thought they were okay. When I went last week, my friend and I split them and they were soggy, sticky, and didn't have the same flavor I remembered. I probably won't be getting those ever again, but I will definitely be back for the burgers and the salt and vinegar fries! My friend got the pepperoni and meatball sub and she absolutely loved it.

I hate writing negative reviews. But I also think it's important for establishments to address blatant problems in the way they conduct business especially when it has to do with management. I stopped in late last night after a local concert. I had not eaten dinner & I was peckish & wanted something small to snack on. I greeted the barkeep with a smile & politely asked him for a menu. He obliged somewhat indifferently. I travel frequently & you can tell a lot about an establishment in the way they treat single diners. ESPECIALLY single women diners. What I tend to find is it is one extreme or the other: excellent service or surly, indifferent, reluctant, or rude. I am always puzzled why this occurs. Is it BC they don't think single women tip well, they don't like single diners BC the bill will be nominal. I really don't get it. I was at the bar & they clearly must be used to solo clustomers. Anyway: I engaged the OWNER with a few questions about the menu items. I am 40 + IT professional. I am also polite, lighthearted, & easygoing. Anyway; I found his interaction with me to be really curt & downright rude. Particularly compared to my immediate neighbors: two 27 yr girls. He was entirely different: nice, friendly & engaged, chatty. Anyway, the experience was extremely disappointing. His rude behavior completely overshadowed everything else which is epically sad. To make matters worse, He barked at me as I was leaving saying I hadn't paid my bill WHICH I HAD at least 15+ mins PRIOR. Not to mention I gave him a 20% tip for GOD KNOWS WHY?! I won't ever go back. It was so unpleasant & ridiculous. His behavior was wrong on so many levels. It was not only inappropriate. It was unwarranted.

The Nosh burger with blue cheese, bacon, fried egg, and a roast garlic jam was awesome. Very tasty, and definitely something I'd try again. The bacon dusted fries were a little different, not what I was expecting, but still good. Dusted with a white "bacon dust," it has a hint of bacon flavor.

My husband and I went here for a drink and saw an appetizer that we wanted to try. We asked the bartender if one of the "toppings" could be ommited, due to a dietary restriction, and she said it shouldn't be a problem and went to ask. She returned with a guy who acted completely annoyed. He questioned us WHY, rolled his eyes, shrugged his shoulders and was insulted by the request. We were so disgusted by his attitude and inflexability! After he had walked out the front door, the bartender was even embarrassed and apologized for his behavior. Then she told us he was one of the OWNERS!! Bottom line: Nosh is very unaccomodating. There are SO many bars and restaurants in town where they make you feel welcomed and have no problem with leaving a topping off a dish- Nosh is NOT one of them!

Great meals! Drove 2 hours to get here. I loved it. Prices were a little high but I thought it was worth it in the end. I'd go back often if they were closer.

I love this place. The chef knows how to put together the best sandwich in town; true story. The venue is amazing, a beautiful custom bar and stools, couches in the front, all very tasteful yet casual. My wife and I frequent this establishment for a good meal and a craft beer poured from the tap. Bacon Dusted Fries. Enough said.

Bacon dusted fries are the shit. Having had just been disappointed with the fries from Duck Fat, our B&B host sent us over here with one piece of advice "try the bacon dusted fries." And we did. Jesus. Fucking. Christ. Bacon DUSTED? How do you DUST something with bacon? I have no idea. I just spent about five minutes on Google trying to figure it out, but I do recall seeing this place on "Man versus Food" and they basically freeze the bacon and turn it into dust... thus the Bacon dusted fries. What's great about the fries (in addition to the dust) is that they are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Perfect combination. Convinced that the rest of their food was going to be as excellent as the fries, we ordered one of the sandwiches they had on special... again knockyoursocksoff worthy. Nosh is excellent. Has a wide variety of beers on tap, and of course, the best fucking fries on the planet.

Amazing food.... Fries and squash falafel were both amazing. A little cold for a winter night. Service was also good. They should up the temp or find a better way to keep the cold air out every time the door opens.

The one of the better places I've eating! We had lunch here and it was insane! It's a crazy place, the Nosh Burger was to die for! We also tried the Bacon Dusted Fires which were out of this world! Very fun atmosphere and friendly waitstaff! I would recommend it to anyone :)

I give it two stars only because the food is good. The price is about the same as any burger joint in Maine. The bacon dusted fries are to die for, and I love sandwiches ... However the service is awful! My water spilled they never brought more it took them to long to seat us when we saw us waiting. Then after being seated the food came fast but not once did they check back and we wanted more stuff so by the time they did they just took the check. At the end of it all they didn't give me my full change! Not amused so just get take out.

I was all excited to try the bacon dusted fries. I was so disappointed that I didn't like them, but I don't like extra crispy/greasy fries. Also got a cheeseburger which surprisingly I also didn't care for. I believe they make the patty out of multiple types of meat. Nice ambiance, great location and good service. I'll order something else next time.

  • Ross C.

This place is way over priced and overrated. Service is pretty bad. A burger, fries, and 2 beers-25 before a tip...c'mon man. The burger wasn't anything to write home about-the best part of it was the bun. You want a great burger? Go to Whole Foods and have them make you one, and their fries are just as good. Same quality and you will leave with your shirt on.

Love, love, LOVE this place. Food is original, fabulous presentation, eclectic menu (keep those cheese curds coming!!!), and an ever changing selection of beers. My only complaint would be that a couple of the servers are... less than on the ball. We've had our best experience sitting at the bar.

Went here with my boyfriend, my brother and his fiance. We were drawn into the hype set by Man Vs. Food and since we had such a great experience at Duckfat we were eager to give this place a shot. Both my boyfriend and brother ordered the nosh burger which ended up being hugely disappointing to both of them. We're not sure if they were given the wrong sauce by mistake because the sauce tasted more like the cherry jam that comes on the apocalypse burger than the garlic sauce promised for the nosh burger. The flavors overall did not meld--the bleu cheese was really overpowering and the bun was soggy with it and the cherry tasting sauce. Even with the sauces scraped my brother was disappointed in the burger quality itself. He also pointed out that in a place that touts gourmet burgers one should really be able to request a medium rare patty. My brother's fiance and I both ordered the crispy avocado (she ordered hers without cilantro and despite what the menu says about altering sandwiches she was given no issue). We both enjoyed our sandwiches--the fried avocado and naan combination was really excellent. We also ordered bacon fries and salt and pepper fries with the chipotle mayo (yum) and the beet tzatziki (less yum). The bacon fries were subtle and tasty. The atmosphere is hip but the food is rather overpriced for how mediocre it is.

I just want to say it is a hard act to follow when you have something as delicious as the apocalypse now burger on the menu. That unto itself is 5 stars. So the reason for 4 stars is cause nothing else compares to this on the menu. Even the bacon dusted fries fell short and they were amazing. The apocalypse now burger with the pork and beef patty, cherry jam, house made mayo, American cheese, crispy pork belly and bacon all on a soft brioche bun. Upon gazing at this concoction, you feel like you are in the presence of greatness. This burger is like a high five from your favorite sports player and a kiss from his hot girlfriend or wife combined with a backstage pass to hang out with your favorite rock star. Yeah, it was that good. So we also shared the pressed duck sandwich with havarti dill cheese, balsamic roasted grapes and cashews. A pretty good sandwich in it's own right, but was like shining double A baseball star compared to the professional level of the burger. The bacon dusted fries on their own are another thing of amazing and joy rolled together. Bacon dust? Seriously! That is better than a lot of sprinklings of things out there. I have white truffle powder that doesn't compare to this porcine powder. I loved the fries, but I still kept wanting more and more burger. NOSH, you have a great thing going and your ace is definitely the apocalypse now burger. Don't ever give that up! It is by far and away my favorite burger of the current century and last century so far! Not that I need another reason to come back to Portland, this burger is reason enough. Actually this burger in a town filled with lobster rolls, lobster and clams and oysters and all things from the sea is like your best friend that no one gets why you hang out with them. A burger like this protects your freedoms while you sleep safe and sound.

Ok, don't come here unless you want to leave on the verge of exploding. I was so full when I left here that I wanted to be taken to a hospital to make sure I didn't rupture my stomach. Get the poutine, of which your table will not leave one drop of gravy. The salt and pepper fries are excellent. The duck confit sandwich is so amazing, with really excellent duck. Cheese steak was great. The corned beef sandwich was the best I ever tried. Try everything. It's all good.

Came to Nosh for late night snacks after a concert and it was a great way to end the night. Very chill atmosphere and the french fries are out of this world! I had the famous bacon-dusted fries- crispy on the outside with lots of fluffy potato goodness on the inside, all sprinkled with a bacon-flavored powder. Looking forward to trying more dishes at Nosh

AWESOME!!! We started with the tempura bacon - delicious, but we all thought it would work better as a dessert. I had the Chicken Banh Mi sandwich which was really good. Just the right amount of pate. My friends had three other dishes and we were all satisfied. Definately going to be on my list to hit when back in Portland, ME!

It takes a special place to get me to try headcheese. Yup, headcheese. In general, I'm not a fan of various meats, let alone bits and parts. But let me back up. A few months ago Nosh hosted a Smuttynose beer dinner. The menu sounded great, except for the aforementioned headcheese. But I'm not the kind of girl who won't man up. So I went for it. The special dinner started with charcuterie of headcheese (it was OK), foie gras and rabbit rillette. Followed by Maine shrimp rangoon in spicy broth with kimchi, beef roulade and a dessert of cheese, lardo, candied bacon and honey. Yum, yum, yum. My most recent visit gave me an opportunity to try out the regular menu. First, this is truly a foodie place. While I went with beer (of which they have an outstanding selection), the wine menu looked good as well. I wasn't super hungry, just wanted, well, a nosh. So we opted for the beef tartare. What a great choice. Flavorful, but very delicate. My companion followed that with a burger, while I had the smoked salmon. Smoked salmon over toast points with a dill creme fraiche and beets. Sublime and it hit the spot. I'm curious how often they change the menu --- I want to nibble my way through it!

Bacon dusted fries?!/! I mean unbelievably fabulous. Really nothing I've had on their menu in this downtown, cozy but open space has disappointed from the hamburgers, sandwiches (a Reuben to die for) to the little side salad for $5. A huge selection of beer....what more could you ask for??? Do NOT leave w/o having the fries. Seriously the best I've had in this country!

Nosh is an upscale casual sandwich joint that serves the best Ruben I have ever had. The corned beef is freshly made and hand cut in massive slices, the sauerkraut is also freshly made, the rye bread was great. The sandwich was grilled perfectly. My wife had the fresh turkey with stuffing sandwich which was, fresh roasted turkey, not some turkey loaf or conglomerated turkey breast. Her sandwich would have been as good as, or better than mine, if the stuffing had been fried just before assembling the sandwich. Like most good places in Portland, the selections of beer and wines was excellent. Even the pickle was good.

Half way good food. Long wait for ok meal. Way to much bacon on the fries and I love bacon. Took 45 min to get table and 30 min to eat. Be a good place to sit and drink. Wouldn't recommend the food

My wife and I ate here on 12/26. We saw Nosh featured on Man Vs. Food, and were intrigued by the burgers. They do not disappoint. My wife had the Nosh Burger, and I had the Apocolypse Now Burger. Both were delicious, and I might go so far as to say mine was the best burger I have ever had, and I have had a lot of (high end) burgers. I also had the bacon dusted fries, my wife the salt and vinegar fries. I liked my fries and would get them again, my wife liked hers ok but would not order them again. Too vinegary she said. I would have given 5 stars, because as far as the burgers go, they are 5 star burgers. The reason I only gave 4 is that it was FREEZING in the restaurant- it had to be low 60's in there. All three in my party wore our jackets through the entire meal and were still chilled. To me this is unacceptable, and I almost considered a 3 star rating because of it, but the food was just too good. Also they were under staffed with servers, having just one waitress servicing a packed (people were waiting for tables) dining area. However, it was the day after Christmas, so I could understand how they might have trouble finding extra staff for that particular day.

Love this bar. Open kitchen. Wide open. Get the Hangar steak Sammy on pretzel bun every time. With riccotta and a horseradish spread. Love it. They have a burger that is 20 dollars. Make it a quad for 27.50 and be a hero!

I'd heard of Nosh, and I finally tried it out last night. What a great experience! The atmosphere was cozy and hip and the waitress was friendly and got our drink order right away. I ordered a dirty gin martini (my usual) and I have to say it's in my top 10 in Portland. It was delightful. Then, I ordered the French Dip and their bacon powdered fries. I don't know what that powder is, but it sure tasted good. The French Dip had nice fresh beef on it and the fries were delicious. For the price, Nosh is definitely worth it. Top quality, local ingredients, quick service and a neat atmosphere. I'd bring visitors here for sure.

Nosh has received a lot of hype. It was featured on the Travel Channel's "Man Vs. Food" and I've heard rave reviews about it. Myself, my fiance and another couple stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30 for a late lunch. The place was very small, as expected, and PACKED. The sign said, "please seat yourselves" but there was nothing available. There was no hostess station, so we stood around the bar, ordered beers, and waited. Finally, we flag a waitress who writes our name down, but a party of 6 had preference. After about 35 minutes (not an exaggeration) we are told that 4 seats at the bar opened up, so we sat there. We ordered the food; myself and my fiance burgers and we shared the bacon dusted fries, and our friends split the pork-belly sandwich and the salt and vinegar fries. We were all almost drunk from the beers on an empty stomach, so we were ravenously hungry. The food came quickly, and was pretty good, but I wasn't totally mind-blown like I wanted to be. The burger was good; a beef and pork mix, so it was light, but they used shredded lettuce, which made the whole thing very messy. I like a burger I can pick up and eat. This one was messy and the bottom bun was soggy. the food satisfied our hunger, and the bacon dusted fries were tasty (I'd eat those more often if I hated my arteries) but I was let down given all the hype it had. It would make a great late night stop; for beers and fries after a night out, or as a midnight snack. For lunch? Too loud, to crowded and somewhat disappointing.

Came here on business from Chicago...great atmosphere, great service. Here's what we had: Sea Salt & Vinegar Fries w/ Chipotle Mayo - amazing. Bacon Dusted Fries w/ Ketchup - amazing. Tempura Fried Bacon - seriously do you have to ask? Amazing. Fried Calamari - described as "The best I've ever had" by one in our party. It was light and tender. The burgers were out of this world, came with a fried egg on top. Sandwiches are legit, almost always served on white bread for an extra tasty treat. If I were to come back, I'd definitely have dessert (peanut butter/chocolate/coconut bar!!), but we were too full. This place is a MUST MUST MUST. And the kitchen is open late!!!

The sad thing is the food is good, however the owner and staff lack the concept of customer service. I have been there several times, and I have finally given up. To summarize: Food is good, but because of the prices on both food, and drinks, and the arrogance of the staff: AVOID THIS PLACE.

A great little place with a cool casual vibe. I had the cured meats sandwich and it was incredible. I only wish they were not closed on Sunday because I wanted to try another sandwich and I was only in town for the weekend. Awesome selection of excellent local beers as well.

My boyfriend is a chef and a lot of times, we get asked what was one of your most memorable meals? We can easily answer with "Nosh in Portland, ME" now. We visited Nosh in August for our New England "staycation" and our first stop was Nosh. We had seen Nosh on Man vs. Food, Trip Advisor, and had heard about it from multiple people in the industry. After looking at their menu, we hit the road and already had our meals in mind. We started off with Stella Artois and it came in a can! We had never seen that and loved it! My boyfriend ordered the Maine Shrimp Banh-Mi with foie gras pate and a side of french fries with house made ranch and sweet sirarcha mayo on the side. I went all in with the Holy Hand Grenade (how could you NOT?!) which was a bacon cheeseburger with maple syrup and bacon dust in between two potato donuts! I died and went to heaven. The burger is massive - I looked at my boyfriend and told him to not look at me when I eat this monster. It was hands down the best burger experience I ever had. The burger was sweet making it almost taste like a breakfast sausage. Needless to say, I finished every last bite. The Banh-mi was delicious with the foie gras pate and fresh pickled vegetables. It was difficult to not order everything on their menu, including the specials which are listed on a blackboard behind the bar. The restaurant is a great location and has a trendy vibe. It looks like it gets very busy at night. Like I said, Nosh is one of the top 5 meals we've ever had and we are willing to take the 2 hour ride just to eat here again. It's a great fit in the Arts District of Portland with a lot of local merchant shops around it.

At 9:30pm on a Friday night, there aren't too many food options in Portland, so when my boyfriend suggested we try Nosh last night, I was prepared mainly for greasy bar food. I was pleasantly surprised. Nosh is located in a funky part of Portland where one of my favorite hipster bars, the White Heart, used to be. The atmosphere in Nosh is very similar: concrete slab bar, interesting artwork, copper tables. The service was wonderful; friendly, but not intrusive. The menu here was really fun. Small plate options as well as sandwiches. It is definitely a meat-heavy menu so veggies be warned. There is a lot of pork and a lot of fish, a lot of it is locally sourced and sustainable. I got the tuna special, which was a delicious seared steak, perfectly cooked, with a black bean and cilantro sauce. It was an amazing piece of fish and only cost $8! It was perfection. I also got the cheese curds, which are from a local farm, breaded in cornmeal and served with pickled jalapeno slices. These are a weakness of mine and were so yummy. They were fried without being slimy and had a nice bit of spice. My boyfriend had an exquisite tuna salad sandwich. We will definitely be returning to Nosh, especially for a late-night bite!

I would have given this place 5 stars if I were rating on ambiance alone, or the awesome fact that there is a ms. pacman machine near the door. i really love ms. pacman even though i suck at it, and i think the decoration is awesome. the burger, however, is not. it is dry as previous posters suggested. and because they put pig in it you can't get it less than well done. so, i love all kinds of meat, but guys - good burgers aren't well done. i was also not a huge fan of the bacon dusted fries, although the novelty was cool for a few bites. i am going back, but the next time i go it'll be for a meat and cheese plate, some beers, and ms. pacman. no burgers or other big food items.

The bacon dusted Nosh fries with horseradish sauce was 'DA BOMB! Excellent!! The split pea soup was really good. The falafel sandwich was decent, but I'm not a big fan of the beet sauce.

Not a great choice for vegetarian fare. Falafel wrap was OK. Really fun environment for casual, loud group get-togethers. Parking was also kind of tough on the street, but it was prime time on Friday night. Those who had bacon-enhanced dishes were pretty happy.

Dropped in on a whim before seeing a few bands around the corner. Sat at the bar. The bartender was busy but attentive. Got an Allagash Black and ordered the ever changing charcuterie plate after looking over the shoulder of an undecided patron sitting next to me. Well worth $12. Three dried meats, all succulent, superb crisps and the pickles killed it. Most around me got burgers and fries and both parties were proud enough to take pictures. One more Allagash Black. I was in and out in a half hour +. The men's restroom needed some attention. Go. Eat. Enjoy.

On a recent trip to Portland, I stumbled upon this bar. It was a Thursday and the sidewalks were lined with cross dressing transvestite homeless people in electric wheelchairs. (beyond odd, my fiance was incredibly uncomfortable). Nosh has a concrete slab bar, as well as a few tables. We sat at the bar and chatted up Matt, the owner. My dining partner ordered a Steak and Cheese (cheese steak but better) which came out ooozing melted cheese. She said it was absolutely wonderful! I ordered the Pig Belly Reuben. This sandwich ROCKED! The pork melted in my mouth!! It was SOOOO good! We ordered a side of fries which came in a cool little tin pail. And OMG they were off the hook good! Homecut with seasalt....mmm..mmmm.mmm! Great food, nice selection of beers. Wouldn't return to Portland, but would return to Nosh if it was located elsewhere. We got stuck in the front waiting area and ended up sitting at the bar, where we ordered up drinks and our dinner. I went with the regular cheeseburger with a fried egg, but really wanted the Nosh burger; however, upon seeing that substitutions are highly discouraged (I hate blue cheese with a passion), I called the audible and went for the other burger. It was good. Not amazing, but good. I did like the twist on a regular patty, and the pork definitely added some juiciness and flavor to the beef (but made for some interesting-tasting burps later). We had the bacon fries, which were also good, but a lot of the fries were way overdone, so they were these greasy, crunchy things without a lot of potato goodness. The big hit was the tempura bacon, and the peanut butter and banana really brought it all together. My friend had the Apocalypse burger and dug it, although when it came out (and as another reviewer stated earlier), it seemed a lot smaller than what I remembered from the show. Wifey enjoyed her burger as well. All in all, not bad. The bartender took care of us quickly so that was nice. I would like to try some of the other stuff next time I'm there, hopefully we can get in a little earlier and grab a better seat.

BEST fries on the planet. (And I know fries, trust me.) Service was great. Drink selection was nicely varied and not too expensive. I can't even remember what we ate since the fries (one order of bacon dusted, one order of salt & vinegar, a bunch of dipping sauces) were so stellar. I think hubs had a burger and I had a gyro. Very good. Perfect tzatsiki and fillings. Cannot wait to go back for the tries. Seriously. Worth every calorie.

Nosh is a new meat-oriented sandwich joint on Congress Street in downtown Portland. It's not a huge restaurant, but has a unique vibe. The atmosphere is "accommodating hipster" with funky decor yet friendly waitstaff and a welcoming interior. The food options reconfirm the unique aura of the place, with options ranging from a pork belly reuben to a crispy cod with chorizo sandwich. I had the meatloaf sandwich which was absolutely delicious. Also ordered at my table were the crispy cod with chorizo and the Nosh Roast Beef with herbed ricotta cheese spread, carmelized onions and horseradish mayo. My group raved about their entree choices. Finally, we rounded out our order with the salt and vinegar fries which I cannot believe I have never seen before. Delicious. Also on the menu are more sandwiches, a few burger options and other light snacks or "Noshes" as they call them. Great food combined with friendly, yet non-intrusive service makes for a great new addition to great foodee town that is Portland, Maine. I can't wait to return.

Normally, I'm a sucker for a burger and fries - any burger and fries - but for the price, I just didn't think Nosh was entirely worth it. I had the Nosh burger, which was WAY too rich to finish. My husband had the Apocalypse Now burger, which he liked just fine but felt awkward ordering with a $20 price tag, especially when it came out the same size as my $9 burger. We shared bacon dusted and salt & vinegar fries: those were the real treats. I would go back and just get beer (from their decent list of local and domestic brews) and fries. On a Friday night, the restaurant was packed. Our service was fine, but I was not thrilled by the boisterous crowd at the bar practically leaning on our table due to the narrow aisle between their stools and our chairs. Maybe we should just go for an afternoon drink and snack when there's no chance of noisy crowds...

I had a great experience here during my first visit to Portland. I didn't really see any "vegan hate" as described on previous reviews.. The waiter was very attentive, the food came out quick and it was delicious. What more can you ask for? I guess you could ask for bacon dusted fries. Which they also have. The fries were great but a little too salty for me. Either way, this place should get a little more credit! I had the crispy avocado sandwhich on pita bread with bacon and some crema sauce that was included. I usually wouldn't make pita my first bread choice but it was perfect with this sandwhich. It felt light but satisfying and I didn't feel guilty after. The sauce and the veggies were really flavorful and I would definitely come back to this place again!

We went to Nosh on Friday night 1/20/12 we were lucky and got a table right off, I started with a Geary's 25th anniversary beer which was awesome! We both order the nosh cheeseburger, a pork and beef patty, American cheese on a brioche bun. We spilt an order of sea salt & pepper fries with a chipotle mayo dipping sauce. Our server was very good and the food was served fast but not rushed. We will return I have to try the Nosh Burger next.

Oh my. We went here for lunch, and wish we could eat everything on the menu. The food is spectacular. We tried the reuben sandwich which is one of their best sellers. Nothing like the drab sandwich most places call a reuben. This one has thick-sliced pieces of beautifully prepared brisket, with homemade perfectly spiced and sour sauerkraut, and yummy cheese. The side salad itself was a delight -- every leaf looked like it had just been picked, with a home-pickled cucumber sparkling things up. neighboring tables were also showing signs of deep delight... And a wonderful space to boot!

The bacon dusted fries are the best! Friend and I went for lunch on a Friday and it was packed. We got the last two seats at the bar. Not sure how long the fries usually take but we put in an order ASAP. I had a standard cheese burger and he had the gyro. Staff was attentive and pleasant. Would like to come back for the evening Nosh experience with their selection of tapas which appeared to be only available starting at 4:30pm.

I heard great things about Nosh, but it wasn't until this weekend that I got to go! I went with a friend, around 6, and there was a short wait. We went for a walk and returned to find a few empty tables. Once we sat, the waitress got our drinks and then disappeared for a while. She may have been gone 10 minutes, and we were definitely ready to order before that. The menu was extensive and very meat-focused! When the waitress finally returned, the item my friend wanted had just run out. So we each had the Nosh burger and split a pint of french fries. The fries were AMAZING - crispy and delicious. The burger came with bacon, blue cheese, a fried egg, and roasted garlic jam. The roasted garlic jam was hella tight: fresh-tasting and flavorful. The bun was also soft and fresh, and I'd like blue cheese if you kicked it all the way east from California. I wasn't digging the burger itself, however - the beef is mixed with pork, so the only cooking option is well done. The patty was also really thin and seasoned differently than I prefer. But as a flavor combination, the burger worked. After the meal itself, our waitress brought the bill and then was slow in coming back to check on us. Another server took our empty plates, and finally yet another employee came to take the credit card. She did come back to apologize for the delay, but at that point, it was a little late.

Tried the Nosh Burger and the Pig Burger. The Nosh Burger was great and one of the better burgers I've had. I don't even like blue cheese but I found the blue cheese spread with the roast garlic balsamic sauce to be quite good, plus the fried egg and bacon on top made for an interesting combination. The Pig Burger was so-so. I couldn't wait to try the bacon dusted fries. They were tasty but nothing spectacular. The beer was good but I was surprised to see that the draught beer on special was more expensive than the bottled beer. I didn't find that great of a beer selection either. The atmosphere was nice but the service was lacking! Our server didn't even smile until she handed us the bill. The people behind the counter didn't seem happy to be there. Also, as I looked around I saw empty, dirty tables that no staff seemed to clear until people finally showed up to sit down, then the staff still took their time making their way over to the tables to clean them. With so many choices to eat in Portland, I will probably go elsewhere from now on.

"The only part of a pig you can't use is his squeak" Although Nosh may not use the entire pig, the parts that they do use create such a tasty meal that I will be back every time I am in Portland. We went there for lunch this past weekend and upon first bite I became insanely depressed that this restaurant wasn't located in Portsmouth NH. The meal started with bacon dusted french fries that were perfectly cooked and so tasty that I didn't even use any of the dipping sauces that I ordered. For a sandwich I got the Apocalypse Now burger. A burger topped with American cheese, seared pork belly, cured bacon, foie gras, house mayo, and macerated orange and cherries. It was a meat orgie in my mouth. Other sandwiches at the table were the duck confit sandwich, and the pork belly Reuben. Both of which were just as mouth watering as the burger. Service was a little slow considering the place wasn't that busy but I was with good friends and it wasn't so bad that I would take a start away. The tables were kept clean and the drinks were good.

Funky, fun and truly incredible food. The jalapeno-cheese polenta fries were delicious, as were the bacon-dusted fries (no idea what bacon dust is, but it's dusty, tastes like bacon and is delightful). I don't usually use food-snob terms like 'flavor profiles' but they are truly excellent at building them. My shrimp bhan mi with fois gras pate was truly sublime: perfect bun, crispy-fried shrimp, fresh veggies and rich fois undercurrent all through. Spectacular! My wife's falafel was also excellent with an intriguing sauce that we loved. Not all their beer options were available, but the service was friendly and efficient. Great place, we'll happily eat here again next time we're in Portland.

Some pretty nice items on the menu. I had the falafel, and it was tasty. Friend had fries and gravy and liked it. Good drinks too!

The fried pickles are awesome. I wasn't a fan of the fries, and I was so excited! I am picky with my fries and they are a little too mushy on the inside (the bacon dusted ones) My friend ordered the sea salt & vinegar fries, THEY are delicious! Pig feet were too fatty for my taste but the meat is good. Service is a little slow and the stupid touch screen jukebox freezes when you put your $1 in. I eventually heard the song after 10 tries. Good to stop and grab a beer quickly.

I didn't have the burgers and I didn't have the fries. I did have a very good bartender, and I did see an awesome looking Reuben ordered by the guy next to me. I did have the worst gyro I have ever had in my life. Beside the fact they put no meat on it, the tzatzki sauce was watery. Not a gyro joint, I suppose. Will have to try what they are known for. Great service, though. If you like gyros, don't get one here. I will honestly say it sucked! Sorry.

I went here, FINALLY, at least thats how it felt. I knew I was in for a massive food attack but I had no idea how massive it was going to be. We went at 9pm on a Wednesday night and there was no seating what-so-ever inside so we decided to pull up a couple (tiny) tables outside and sit there. The drink selection is decent, not over the top as compared to some of the other places in the area but thats not what we were there for, we were there for the food, and hell did we have food..... My friend (who had been here before) started out by ordering appetizers: fried pickles, cheese curds and dun dun DUN! BACON DUSTED FRIES. lets talk first about the fried pickles, HOLY pickles batman, I LOVE fried pickles and after I had these, i seriously don't think any other fried pickle will live up to it, they fried whole dill pickles then served them with chipolte mayo. YES. the cheese curds were awesome and never ending! the bacon dusted fries were one of the best things I will ever put in my mouth, I want some right now! I then completed my meal with the Nosh Burger which was nothing short of AMAZING. I. LOVE. NOSH. end of story.

So beyond disappointing. The bacon dusted fried lacked any trace of a taste of bacon. I had to try for the apocalypse now burger. First two or three bites were interesting. By the end I just wanted ketchup and to get it over with.

It was not as good as it had been 3 months ago. I actually called to see if they had changed owners ( they have not). Portions are ridiculously small. The nachos were the smallest I have ever seen.( 4 inches square maybe 1/2 inch high). The rolls were supermarket quality. Go someplace else.

Wow. What great burgers and the bacon fries are so good. It is the essence of bacon realized in a delicious white dust.

Service was attentive and helpful. The place is cool looking with a nice long bar. The menu, however, didn't appeal to me since I don't eat meat, and the place specializes in burgers. I ordered the pulled pork but it was overcooked. If you like burgers and beers, go. My friend enjoyed her burger and fries. It is a very friendly place in a convenient location.

The bacon dusted fries were out so goddamn good its not even funny. No seriously, not at all hilarious. Also had the pork belly hoagie which was also amazing. Full bar and terrific food, what more could you possibly as for? (well quite possibly a lot but that's not the point)

Diggity dank. Can't say that I've had more than a baker's dozen Reubens in my lifetime, but of those, theirs is the best by FAR. Miles. Kilometers. Seriously, this thing could compel the most angelic, animal-loving, health-crazed vegetarian to change teams. The bacon-dusted fries and duck confit pressed sandwich were also standouts. Minus one star for the noise - it was insanely loud at 9:30PM on a Thursday - big bar scene. But with the grub, neither talking nor listening mattered one bit!

Amazing burgers and fries. The apocolypse burger blew me away, along with the bacon dusted fries. My brother got the cheesesteak sandwhich and it was also to die for. Highly recommended for lunch if your in the area.

Traveled to Portland for night. I saw this place on TV and being a pork lover had to check it out. Trendy little place around the corner from my hotel works great for me. Great beer selection and menu is concise. I ordered a Nosh Burger and homemade fries. Huge burger and nice size order of frites. Both the burger and fries were cooked great, lots of flavor and really reasonably priced for what you are served. It is a great concept and I would definitely return if I was in town.

Went with 4 others for a late lunch - my tuna sandwich was amazing; everyone else had burgers (the 3 guys all had the apocalypse now burger) and were really happy with them. Got orders of bacon-fries and salt & vinegar fries to share - both were really good. Also recommend the ahi-tuna nachos.

This place is good for a greasy sandwich or burger every so often, but it never quite lives up to its hype. They used to have a ham and cheese panini topped with a fried egg and cheese sauce, which was the best thing on the menu, but they took it off! The fried pickles are very good (they're spears not chips, which I prefer) and fries are good as well and come with a choice of a variety of dipping sauces which is cool. The burgers and reubens are good, but I wasn't a fan of the filafel sandwich or hanger steak sammy. It's a fun laid-back atmosphere, good for a casual dinner with friends.

I could go on and on.. but as a lover of food and especially one passionate about burgers.. It doesn't get better than a Nosh Burger.. This coming from a guy who despises Blue Cheese... Fantastic beer selection and the service was amazing, even while the place was packed.

They have brought 2010 designs to Portland. There logo, color schemes, place settings is perfect. I even love there name. The only issue I have is that they add pork in many of the entrées. What an oxymoron of the word Nosh. I am not kosher so I have had there burger -- just ok. Personally I say go to the place for drinks or a late night menu. You can get a better burger down the street during dinner time.

I have only heard good things about this place and must agree. I have had the Chicken Banh Mi and Braised Duck Confit along with salted fries and bacon dust fries. Everything I have had was stunning. The Banh Mi had fresh herbs and vegetables that crunched as I bit in, accenting the nicely seasoned meat. The Duck sandwich was essentially a panini with cashews and balsamic grapes. The cheese was well melted and the duck was juicy without being too greasy. The interesting mix of cashews and tasteful grapes evened out the dish. I only wish I was brave enough to dip the bacon dusted fries into mayonnaise. While I understand that the sandwich was by no means healthy, I still can't dive straight into the mayo. Nosh has been astounding.

I dug this place. Laid-back. Fun paintings. Order the "baby jesus" for the drunken wordplay possibilities. The fried cheese curds were recommended but I was disappointed as they were dry and cornmeally; one of my companions suggested that Maine residents may not have been exposed to the variety of fried items that we southerners have been so the novelty may come into play for some people. Incredible duck confit that had all of us fighting over duck skin. A cheese dubbed Humble Pie was also enchanting.

I was on a layover in Portland and instead of going to my usual hangout at the Sebago Brewing Company and since it was a pretty long walk in the cold I decided to go to NOSH with a fellow flight attendant that recommended it. Walked in the place and it was about empty, probably because it was just after 5 on a Friday. Sat down and the waitress came over soon after and she was in that mood like I don't want to be here today and don't ask me a lot of questions. The menu was interesting but I stuck with what I knew. I ordered the NOSH burger and the dusted bacon fries with some horseradish and mayo sauce. First of all the fries were heavenly. I was like they melted in your mouth. GREAT.. Loved them. But the burger on the other hand was pitiful. I get the pork and beef mixture but this burger was as thin as a mcdonalds hamburger. It was not good at all. I was expecting to have the same reaction to the burger as I had to the fries. NOT! Maybe my palate isn't sophisticated enough, but I would have loved to have had the burger at sebago Brewing Company instead. So I would return to this establishment for the fries and probably would try something else and hope that I don't get the same waitress.

I went after seeing the Man v Food show, and after all of the hype, I was not impressed. VERY, VERY heavy dishes that were flavored with fat. The bacon dusted fries were an immense amount of sodium. And, by the way, the burger referenced on the show does not even exist.

I've stopped in a few times to try a few of Noshs' sandwiches, my favorite so far being the duck confit, but this past weekend I went for a birthday dinner with a friend and we ate our way through half the menu. The waffle pressed french dip was delicious and crispy. Being toasted on a waffle press allowed greater absorption of the rich au jus. The bacon dusted fries were as always fantastic, with just the slightest earthy hint of bacon. The froi gras was slightly undercooked for my personal liking, and was paired with what seemed to be a pistachio sauce.... I wasn't sure how I felt about the combination at first, but after getting over the initial shock of the flavor I found the pairing more and more intriguing. The steak tartar had a nice flavor with slight hints of lime, coriander, and some hot pepper and served with a raw egg yolk. While I loved the flavors in this dish, I wasn't crazy about the texture. I'm more accustomed to steak tartar being minced or finely diced, at nosh it was ground leaving it to be, in my personal opinion, too mushy. The tempura bacon was served with a pumpkin sauce which seemed so perfect for this time of year. The tempura batter was a little too heavy, but was a problem easily fixed by picking off one side of it. I personally didn't care for the mortadella corn dogs; finding nothing truly inspiring about the flavors and being too mushy, but my companion loved them, and happily scarfed up my half. The pickled vegetables were zesty, and made me ashamed at my lame home-pickling adventures. The waitress was sweet, but there was a slowwww wait for any drinks, but I think that was a problem more on the bartenders end then hers, and we ended up having a lovely time, both leaving in a food coma.

I was in (with my daughter) for the first time when an actor brought us in after the Hidden Tennessee play during the late winter. We're both vegetarians for the most part. I haven't eaten meat other than some fish in about fifteen years. I found some seriously delicious and satisfying food that I really enjoyed that suited my diet and my wallet. It was a great night. The staff at Nosh was super fun loving and friendly. The atmosphere was really beautiful and cozy and great for socializing. I know that the visiting actors and actresses loved it there. The one we were with was a special young man and very busy actor from NYC who is very used to a having a lot of great choices for places to go out to, and he loved Nosh. I heard that the cast for the play liked it so much, they made the effort to return during their rather short stay in Portland.

I came on a Saturday night at 6pm and wanted to try the Apocalypse burger, but it was sold out. So I decided to try the Nosh burger instead. The garlic jam was good, but the burger itself was just average. The fries were very tasty though. Next time, I'll probably just stick with the sandwiches and definitely order a side of fries. Service was slow during this time as they were very busy. They probably should hire more help.

Let me tell you, if you are in love with pork like myself then this is the place to go. Such wonderful selections of sandwiches, fries, cheeses, and charcuterie. Went with some friends for lunch...lets go to Mo for the results PIg Belly Reuben - mouth watering Duck Confit - Wonderful Crispy Cod - Pretty darn good Sea Salt Fries - Yummy Beer Selection - Descent This place would have gotten 5 stars and feel it still does for the food but the service was Horrible!! There was a waitress servicing about 6 tables at the time and it took her forever to do anything. We waited 10 minutes to order after getting drinks finally, then after the food came we didn't see her again. After she dropped off the check she picked it up about 15 minutes later. I mean she was slower than a snail wearing a weighted vest crawling through molasses. I mean the food was really good but having to sit there forever again makes me question going back...ya it was that bad

We started a food journey based on recommendations from the food channel and while some of them have been big disappointments, NOSH was a refreshing little oasis in a day that started out in the pits. Background is we had to drive three hours to Maine for court to see a rat bastard that owed me money. Rotten day, but the judge did find in my favor. To celebrate our win we decided to eat our way down the coast. We started at Nosh and based on recommendations tried the Nosh Burger, fries and pig belly apple pie. Fries, really good with ketchup although some may find them incredibly salty. Nosh burger. It was okay, not the best of all possible burgers, but juicy, messy and tasty. Pig belly. Heaven on a hoof. The combo of pork with zesty cinnamon apples was a taste combo delight. Everything about it was fantastic. I would have liked a moister dressing on the bread, but that's not a deal breaker. Service was fine and I'd certainly come back. Oh, while reading husband the beer list he mistakenly heard me read "gluten free beer" as "free beer". Evidently I got him all excited for nothing.

Get a Nosh Burger, bacon-dusted fries, and your favorite brew. You will be in heaven. But I was disappointed to read about the douchy behavior of one of the owners, noted by a reviewer below. No customer should even have to explain why they want an ingredient omitted. An owner should only apologize if for some reason he or she is unable to meet the request - as in "Sorry, it's all mixed together." There are many different reasons someone might not be able to, or might not want to, eat a specific ingredient. Maybe after being on the Food Network, the owner is a legend in his own mind.

We finally made it to Nosh! I have been dying to try this place for so long. Between the reviews, Man Vs. Food, and friends talking about it, well it was finally time. We arrived for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. The tables were full, but there was seating at the bar. We sat down, and were greeted by the male bartender and given menus. Nothing special about the greeting, not friendly, or not unfriendly, just kind of......blah? I was hoping the reviews I had read about pretentious and underwhelming service here were wrong. They were not. I ordered the Falafal sandwich with Salt and Vinegar fries. I opted for the Chipotle Mayo as my extra dipping sauce (menu says you get ketchup and one other sauce) He ordered the Nosh Burger with two patties, and the Bacon dusted fries, with gravy as his extra sauce. I'll start with the sandwiches. It was mostly really good, but the Falafal balls were way overcooked. I know the menu said they are extra crunchy, so I get that this is what they are going for. But it just made it really hard to bite in to. I ended up having to eat the sandwich with a knife and fork, It was just kind of awkward. I did however love all the components of the sandwich, just a tad TOO crunchy. The Burger had this huge pile of shredded iceburg lettuce on it. Too much. It may be my complete aversion to crappy iceburg lettuce, but it just did not make sense to me at all. (My falafal was also covered in iceburg) Bring me some Spring Greens any day! He loved the burger, I took a bite and it was good, but like I have read in other reviews, I found the pork/beef blend a bit weird tasting. I would have preferred just really good beef. Now the fries. OMG the salt and vinegar fries!! They were tangy and salty and just delicious. Possibly the best fries I have ever had! He said the same about the bacon fries. I liked them both, but preferred the S+V. When the food arrived, the bartender only gave us one small container of ketchup to share. The last time I checked, ketchup was not overly pricy. Normally not a problem, but when we needed more, he was nowhere to be found. After a while, he finally returned from the back and we asked for more. Why not just serve one with each order of fries, as the menu states? Overall, I will go back for sure. I would have loved to have had a sampler plate I read about, but it is only available after 4pm. Pretentious service is SO ANNOYING! I know it seems to be kind of the "in thing" these days, but I am so over it!! Give me a friendly if chatty bartender/server any day! I don't dine out to be ignored and made to feel like I am wasting their time.

Bacon dusted fries were just ok. The top half was decent but the bottom half was just soaked in fat and all soggy. Ordered the corn beef reuben which was kinda dry. Bread was toasted perfectly on outside but very soggy on the inside. My friend ordered open face meatloaf which was also dry. Just not as good as I'd hoped for but unfortunately tv fame does this. What I did like was no rush from the waitress. Nice to sit with good friends and enjoy a meal rather than rushed through it.

Have been here several times now and am hooked! For appetizers, the salt and vinegar fries are a must. You can choose from a variety of dipping sauces, from ketchup to horseradish mayo. Also fantastic are their fried cheese curds which come with a few pickled hot pepper slices. So far, none of the sandwiches that I've tried (or those that I went with) have been a let down. I've had the NRB which includes a massive portion of high quality roast beef, herbed ricotta, caramelized onions and was in heaven! On our most recent visit, they were hosting a fundraiser for Chile and were offering a few Chile themed specials. I got the special sandwich that included roast beef, avocado, mayo, and spicy green beans (what a great idea!). My fiance got the Nosh Burger (with fried egg, bacon, and garlic spread) that was quickly voted the best choice of the night. Our other friend got the Roast Turkey (huge portions of turkey, stuffing, cranberry, etc) that she could only finish half of. With food like this, along with a good beer selection and fun atmosphere, this place will surely continue to do well!

This place has recieved fabulous reviews and honestly it's not really my scene and I probably wouldn't have gone here but I had a groupon. My overall impression= hipster and pretentious- nothing comfortable at all. It also was my birthday and I shared this information with the bartender (who I believe was also the owner), thinking he might give me at least a smile or a congrats- i got nothing! Then he proceeded to ignore us. He also forgot to offer us menus and we were sitting right in front of him at the bar! He served me a glass of wine in a juice glass, strange. It was just really over the top. trying way to hard and forgetting what really counts- good food and good service. biggest disapointment was that when we finally got one plate of poutine fries, they were so salty and almost inedible. blah.. .

We hope we went with the wrong side of the menu. Sandwiches on one side and tapas type offering on the other. We went with the tapas style. We had the salt and vinegar fries which is essentially why I am going with 2 stars, that and a decent beer/wine list. We had mushrooms in a sherry vinegar sauce, roasted tomatoes, cheese curds in a cornmeal crust, farm eggs with a truffle sauce and calamari in an olive harissa lemon sauce, oh dear. It was a Monday and not that busy and we waited a long time for the food to start rolling. I shudder to think of the service on a weekend. The mushrooms were good but uninspiring. The tomatoes fairly bland. the eggs cooked beyond a care and difficult to get through the crust attached to the little cast iron dish. A well cooked egg tells a lot about a kitchen. Anywho fries and beer good, the rest not so much. I hope their sandwiches are served on exceptional bread with exceptional toppings. Good luck.

Second time eating here. Went with another couple so shared a few items. The pig belly reuben was fantastic (again) and tried the apocalypse now burger - a little pricey and not as apocalyptic in size as it is in richness - still very good. One had a burger which she was litterally drooling over. We had 2 orders of the bacon fries - I'm going out on a limb here and saying I like the fries here more than at Duckfat - there, I said it. One had a "regular" reuben which was also great. We also tasted a chocolate dessert which was very taste. The only thing that was lacking was the bacon tempora (like we needed more fat). A little greasy and couldn't find the bacon. Had to double up on the Lipitor when I got home. Service was nice - attentive waitress but not too much so. This place is turning into one of my favorites. It's an inexpensive, cool place with very good food. Only problem is my wife doesn't like to eat fatty things like I do so I can't get here as often as I'd like.

Nice atmosphere, great decor and artwork, and also great service. Tried the apocalypse now, just for fun. Was not something I really liked, but I could see why people would like it- was clearly high quality food. The hubby had the burger on potato donuts- really liked that. Fries were great too. Menu looks amazing, if we lived in the area I would return!

We just had lunch here for my birthday. It was amazing. I have been looking forward to trying their burgers and famous fries. Very very good! My cousin said his bacon double burger was the best thing he'd ever eaten at a restaurant. And that's saying something if you knew him. Lol. My two-year-old niece behaved beautifully and snacked off everyone's plate. She even loved the horseradish sauce. Who knew? We were all amazed. :) We had Great service. And I noticed that no one was on their phone. Falafel: incredible! Burgers: amazing! Fries: both bacon and vinegar..Amazeballs!!!! YES YES YES. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

Best Reuben sandwich. BEST. I live in Virginia and I dream about their Reuben. In fact, I might take a trip to ME just to get it. And this place is open late. It's delicious. Everything there is insanely good. Mom got some watermelon salad thing, super good. Dad got a sloppy joe, super good. The boyfriend got something that was SUPER GOOD. Would be psyched to have a place as yum as Nosh in my area. Stop reading this and go there if you're lucky enough to be in its vicinity!

And WOW what a meal! the drinks were great and so was the food the Poutine was fantastic! the prices were not bad either we put all of our food in the middle of the table and tried it all. Our waitress was great too... I will have to go back! I will agree with another reviewer that if you are a vegetarian you may want to skip this place.

I've heard the hype and in Portland that's a given since the town has a wealth of topnotch restaurants for a place its size. I met the owner a week ago during my w/e merchandising job. Nice guy and he repped his establishment, while also complimenting my own high-end product. Since my wife and I just went through a shitty experience of having our house broken into and a bunch of electronics ripped, we decided to make Saturday a combined errand-run and dinner/movie date. We both loved Nosh and seeing that it occupies the former White Heart space made it even better because we always enjoyed our times there during its run. I had the cheeseburger and plain salt/pepper fries. Burger very solid and came with lettuce/tomato/pickles/onions on a fresh brioche bun. Fries were great and I had the chipotle mayo dipping sauce, which was a nice touch. Mary's choice was a very cheesy Philly cheesesteak and since she loves vinegar on her fries, she went the vinegar and salt route. I wish I had, also, as these were terrific. Since I think "nosh" means to snack, or nibble, the best part of the meal was actually the pre-main course items Mary and I nibbled on. We're fans of anything pickled, and given that I'd read that Nosh's pickled veggies were the bomb, we ordered a plate to, of course, nosh on. These totally rule. Pickled cucumbers that are both sweet (on one end of the dish) and bitingly spicy on the other side. Since Miss Mary makes killer pickled beets of her own, I was curious to see what she thought of the Nosh variety. Thumbs up. Cauliflower and pickled carrots were also included. We tried the fried cheese curds, since we've been to Wisconsin, the center of the cheese curd universe. Lightly fried, with what I think was a kind of marinara sauce at the bottom of the dish. These were good, but we could have passed on these. I also had a cup of the fagiole soup, which is an Italian wedding soup. It was flavorful, hot, and well worth sampling. We really liked our experience at Nosh. We ate at the bar and our bar tender was great, making sure we had what we needed that our beer and wine needs were filled, without being intrusive. Well worth checking out.

On vacation with my girlfriend in Portland, we were curious to try the restaurants in the area. We have a friend from Portland who is crazy about Nosh, so we figured we could give it a shot. I wasn't let down. I had the Nosh burger, which had blue cheese spread, bacon, and fried egg. I've never been a fan of fried egg on burgers, but it worked here. The egg yolk dripped right out of the bottom, making for a great burger and fry dip! Speaking of which, the bacon dusted fries are phenomenal. Just the right balance of salty and crunchy. It would be worth stopping in just for the fries. My girlfriend had the crispy avocado sandwhich, which had fried avocado on it. She said it was good, at least there's an option (albeit an unhealthy one) for vegetarians. The menu was a bit small, and it's not cheap, but also not outrageous. Between my burger, her sandwich, the fries, and one beer, the total was $39. A bit on the pricey side but not much more than a dinner for two would cost any other typical restaurant. Overall, if you're looking for something greasy and fatty, Nosh is the way to go. I enjoyed my time in Portland and will come back, and Nosh will definitely be on my list.

The Nosh Blossom tastes like slightly sweetened watery gin, the bartender in the Ashtanga yoga tee was worse than unfriendly, but the bacon-dusted fries and the 'keep in the ballcap saved the experience

Call me a purist, but the pork and beef patties are a bit confusing at the first bite. I guess I didn't read up before coming here that it was a blended burger, hey sometimes it works and it looks like it works for many, but not me. I just like a good fresh burger with interesting toppings. Bacon dusted fries - I am amazed how good those are! We had to order another batch of them. Many of their dressed up fries are true to flavor, we also got the malt vinegar, which if you are a fan of, would be excellent choices as well. Nice atmosphere a mix of trendy bar and upscale burger restaurant. I wouldn't mind coming back here again for some beer, and maybe some other non-burger items.

Unimpressed. I paid $11 for what? A pretzel roll with wayy too many veggies and 4 slices of paper thin pork? Excuse me, if I wanted a veggie laden sandwich, I would have gone.... well somewhere else. I was expecting porky goodness from this Maple pork special sandwich they had going on tonight. All I got and tasted? Ice berg, tomato, red onion, pickled cherry peppers and this oily but tasty greenish sauce. It took me awhile to find this pork under the piles of junk that is veggies on this sandwich. Also, their seared tuna app was tasty, light and fresh. But I could have gone without since I misread it and thought it was a sandwich (since it was the same price). Yeah, their fries are pretty tasty. Thick cut, crispy and a nice tang from the vinegar. But this place is way too hyped up for the prices. This isn't NYC. But then again, in NYC people wouldn't pay $11 for paper thin slices of pork and not complain about it. I saw 1 waitress for the entire dining area and 1 bartender? No host/hostess to greet upon arrival? With 5 bucks an order for fries (which would equate to what, 1.5 potatoes) I'm sure they can afford to hire more help. Overrated. Move along.

The first time I went to Nosh, it was a late Sunday afternoon and we got the option of sitting outside, and of course we took it. Sitting outside, we looked over the menu and ordered a burger and the "bacon-dusted" fries. The waiter was great, and suggested a few sauces to compliment the fries. We told him to surprise us! When the food arrived we were surprised with the plating as well as the quality of the food. My friend loved the burger and when he lightly squeezed it you could see juices just wanting to escape! As for the fries..."OH MY" is all I can say! I recentely had surgery that has made it so that I cannot process things such as beef and pork, and I now have found my replacement for my bacon cravings. They tasted as if they had been rolling around in bacon. They were perfect. A little greasy and crispy, while still holding a great consistancy on the inside. (I would suggest Duck Fat for the best fries in Portland, but these are a close second!) Since then, I have been back a few times and I have always been content with the service and food at Nosh. I will say, I always make a point of it to order the "bacon dusted" fries! (I like mine with the chipotle mayo!)

Sadly, after hearing great things about this place, we went there for a lunch break. Waited about twenty minutes for our order, and I had specified that the hot sauce be on the side of the wings. Guess what! When I called it to the server's attention, she said it would be another 20 minutes until another batch would be ready. My partner had a so-so lunch, but I had to return to a meeting with only a diet soda and fries to tide me over. Didn't go back.
