So we stayed at the Morrill Mansion over the weekend and it was just perfect! We really enjoyed the coziness and comfort of staying at this B&B. The ambiance throughout the house was very warm and inviting. We stayed in the McGuire room and it was just the right size for the two of use. The room was well kept and well decorated. The bed was very comfortable, the sheet were also great. The room came equipped with a fridge, TV, alarm clock, hair dryer, etc. There was also wine glasses and a wine bottle opener in the room---Very nice touch! The bathroom was also very nice. The towels were great quality and super soft (big thing for me)!! The innkeeper David is very helpful and an amazing breakfast cook! The breakfast was great and it included: mini cheese omelets, roasted potatoes, assortment of fruit and baked goods and the best part was the homemade bread pudding--It was delicious! There was also an assortment of f fresh coffee, tea, and fresh juices too. The baked chocolate chip and coconut brownies were also amazing! Its conveniently located being about a 10-15 min. walk to downtown. There is parking on site and the area is very quite at night. We will definitely be staying here again the next time we are in Portland!

We had such a great time at the Morrill Mansion. The innkeeper is incredibly friendly and the inn is clean, homey and cute. It's a little walk (15 mins) to Old Port, but its a really nice walk in nice weather. The innkeeper took the time to give us restaurant recommendations and even brought out the map to show us where everything was located. We stayed in the Vaughn Room, which is on the third floor. Small and cute with a private bath and a really comfy bed. Every night there are brownies, cookies, or some other treat in the second floor family room. If you're looking for one of those crazy B&B elaborate breakfasts, you won't find it here. It is a continental breakfast, but much nicer than a hotel. There were muffins, hot and cold cereal, bagels, cinnamon rolls, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs and homefries one day and French toast another, and of course coffee, tea and hot chocolate. I definitely recommend staying here!

Morrill Mansion = Magnificent! My boyfriend and I planned a brief one-night trip to Portland (sort of a last hurrah before leaving the Boston area for good) and deliberated over which bed and breakfast to choose. So many options! My friend AJ K. highly recommended Morrill Mansion; the pictures looked lovely so we thought we'd give it a try. We weren't disappointed! It truly is a nineteenth-century mansion - large (six guest rooms on the second and third floors) and elegantly decorated. It still has all the charm of an old house, but it the amenities are very modern. We stayed in the Vaughan Room, located on the third floor. It was beautiful! The bed was big and cushy, with lots of fluffy pillows (and who doesn't like fluffy pillows??), there were two windows which let in a lot of light, two large mirrors, a TV and DVD player, a mini-fridge, and a little bowl of chocolates. The bathroom was neat and spacious, with a tile stand-up shower, shampoo, conditioner, and a nice hair dryer. It was just a really comfortable and romantic environment. For breakfast, David laid out eggs and sausage, hash browns, yogurt, toast, bagels, muffins, lots of fresh fruit, and little bowls of vanilla custard (custard for breakfast = brilliant). The room was so cozy, and David and the other guests were so nice, I only wish I could have stayed longer! If my boyfriend and I find ourselves in Portland again, we'll definitely stay here.

In my opinion, the true charm of the Morrill Mansion is its extreme cleanliness. I've traveled all over the country and internationally, and I've never seen a place this pristine. The afternoon brownies, sweet tea, and David's dinner recs were awesome, but you feel so much more at home when your room and common areas are spotless. I'm definitely staying here again on my next trip to Portland.

This was the first B&B I've ever been to and this was also the first trip I made to Portland. Our stay at the Morrill Mansion was excellent and so much fun. David, the innkeeper, was a very easy going and conscientious host - he was extremely helpful. He gave us great recommendations of places to visit and and eat. He is a native of the area and is very knowledgeable. We were also given lots of privacy. We stayed in the Vaughn Room, which was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was not huge, but it was sufficiently sized. The food was pretty good. The breakfast was tasty and filling. We also enjoyed the daily dessert provided in the common room. If you are visiting Portland, definitely stay at the Morrill Mansion - you will not be disappointed!

What a great place to stay. It's very convenient and easily within walking distance to most things. It was very clean and nicely decorated. The owner obviously takes pride in his home and works hard to make guests feel welcome. His attention to details was greatly appreciated. The breakfasts and afternoon snacks were all delicious. We will be back.

What a great stay. The room was the nicest of any B&B we ever stayed in. Tasteful, attention to detail, exceptionally clean. David is a charming guy who made my wife and I feel very welcome. He is helpful, yet quiet about it like a wonderful concierge. Breakfasts are great, aware afternoon brownies, cookies. The location in great, the neighborhood seems a bit out of the way, but it's not. A few blocks away there are great restaurants and the arts district. Eat at Miyake-best Japanese food ever and Petite Jacqueline-the Onion Soup cooks for days and is incredible as is the burger-yes, burger. Don't miss the huge historic cemetery a few blocks away with headstones going back hundreds of years. Thanks David. You are a great host.

Not a lot I can add here that others haven't already mentioned. My first U.S. B&B experience. It was recommended (highly) by friends. So glad we took their advice. We wanted a quick getaway from home and Morrill Mansion fit the bill. It was beautiful, elegant, private, affordable, immaculate and definitely not our last visit. The breakfast was unbelievable. Definitely more than I expected from a B&B. It was plentiful, delicious and makes the rates seem even more reasonable then they already seemed to be. The walk into town was further than some might care for, but we love to walk so we never used the car. David, the innkeeper, was the perfect host. Informative, kind and respectful of our privacy. Can't wait until our next visit!

Just returned from a couple of days in Portland. We found this B&B on travelzoo, and it was the best thing we could have done. It is BEUTIFUL, very clean ,and David the innkeeper is so attentive. We had a late check in and he was there with a smile, and took the time to tell us about the history of the mention. It is well located and walking is safe. WE WILL RETURN!

Really great stay at Morrill Mansion! When we arrived we couldn't believe the incredible attention to detail - from the decor to the service. David, the owner, was so kind and gave us great recommendations for places to eat/activities in Portland - all of which were excellent! In the morning, he made us lobster quiche and raspberry custard. The room was large and comfortable with beautiful and intricate decor. He let us use the bike shed and he even sent my shirt back to me in the mail when I forgot it! He made us fresh treats daily (yummy cupcakes, woopie pies, and iced tea!)

And now, I will pay tribute to the Morrill Mansion in the only way appropriate: A love poem. ::clears throat:: Tucked right off Portland's main thoroughfare Lies dear Morrill Mansion. 'Tis beyond compare. Our room was near perfect - nay, divine That bed! Those sheets! Oh I must make them mine! After exploring Portland's hot spots, We returned to our room, And slept like wee tots. Breakfast at nine, cookies at three. Fresh, warm, delicious; I ate with sheer glee. David, the owner - a gem, delights Answered all questions and mapped out the sights. If again I chance to be Portland-bound, At dear Morrill Mansion, I'd surely be found. ::curtsy::

Morrill Mansion was such a find! Normally I'd stay with family in the area, but they were full up for a holiday weekend. After a brief search online for non-chain overnight options, I'm really glad that I found this one and they had an open room. David, the innkeeper, was gracious, well informed about local goings-on, and is no slouch in the kitchen (cookies or breakfast). We took the Marston room, which was comfy, quiet, and well outfitted (tv w/dvd player, mini fridge, alarm clock/radio, and slim space heater if we needed it). Not your typical B&B, and I'm grateful for it! We'll absolutely be staying here again when visiting family in the area.

Morrill Mansion is the first bed and breakfast I've ever been to and I think it'll be hard for any other B&B to top the experience my husband and I had there. We went off peak season (mid-April) so it wasn't too busy and we got a really good rate ($99 a night). David, the innkeeper was amazing and made sure we were well taken care of. In addition to cooking a delicious breakfast each morning, he leaves a different homemade, yummy treat every day in the common room for guests to snack on. One day it was coconut, chocolate chip cookies, the next it was blondies. If he sold a little cookbook of his creations, I would have bought one in a heartbeat. My husband and I stayed in the Back Cove room on the 3rd floor. The room itself is small but cozy. It comes with free WiFi (a huge plus), a mini-fridge which David stocks with bottled water, a spa tub with bath salts, and really good hairdryer. Also, there's a small table right outside the doorway with an electric kettle, mugs, and everything you need to make coffee or tea. I have only two complaints and neither one would actually prevent me from returning. One is that the radiators kicked on at some point in the night and made high-pitched whistling sounds that are not great for light sleepers like my husband. We found that turning the knob of the radiator so that it was completely closed fixed the problem. The second complaint is that our bathroom had a really faint mildew smell. I'm not sure where it came from since everything is so clean. Cracking open a window while we were out was a quick and easy solution to keep the room well ventilated. It's not surprising to me that Morrill Mansion is the #1 B&B on Trip Advisor. It's clean and cute, the location is convenient to just about anywhere you'd want to go, and David is a gem of an innkeeper.

A truly wonderful alternative to the much pricier hotels and inns near Portland's waterfront, Morrill Mansion is nestled in a picturesque residential neighborhood a bit northwest of downtown and the waterfront, but is still not too long a walk from all that Portland has to offer. The proprietor, David, was friendly a host as anyone could possibly expect and offered up his home like we were old friends. The accommodations were well-appointed and comfortable and the homemade breakfasts (lobster benedict, anyone???) were the PERFECT way to kick off a day of exploring Maine. We typically stay in the area for a week and rent a cottage, but the next time we're back for a shorter stay we'll definitely return to Morrill Mansion!

What a find! We just got back from a weekend in Portland, and by far one of the best parts was this fantastic B&B. We stayed in the "Back Cove" room--a bit on the small side but it didn't feel at all cramped or stuffy. For the price, you really can't beat it: huge comfy bed with great linens, tv, dvd player, mini-fridge, closet, iron, blowdryer, jet-tub, shower, bath salts, wine opener, and complimentary chocolates all in our room/bathroom! The place is decorated beautifully and the rooms are all unique and gorgeous. Plus, the owner David has a pretty decent selection of DVDs that you can borrow for the evening (he assured us that he was trying to increase his "chick flick" collection), plus a cozy common room where he sets out tea and homemade baked goods daily (we had brownies one day and a delicious coconut chocolate chip bars the next). Every morning he makes a delicious breakfast--an egg dish (we had a ham & biscuit quiche-type-thingy one day, and lobster the next!), a great berry crumble, a custard, hardboiled eggs, plus bagels, toast, english muffins, cereal, juice, coffee, milk, yogurt, fruit... it was quite the spread! Not only were the food and amenities top-notch, David was very helpful, offering suggestions on where to eat in the area, fun things to do, and actually gave my girlfriend his secret "detergent recipe" that he uses to make the sheets and towels smell so good! That, and his pug Moby is pretty darn cool. We'll definitely be back--it beats any hotel you could get and is by far the best place I've ever stayed, bar none! I can't recommend it enough!

Great place. Fifteen minute walk to town. Very clean room/place. Awesome DVD collection for guests to enjoy, free of charge. The inn keeper had great recommendations for eats and entertainment.

Very quaint and we stayed in the Vaughn room. Bathroom towels were so great and hair dryer equipped. Small mini fridge and wine opener were useful. They have some board games and DVD collection to choose from. We went the weekend of Thanksgiving just to get out of town and it was a quiet night as if we had the entire place to ourselves. The Innkeeper was very nice and unintrusive almost to the point where I thought he may not like us very much but realize he's probably just trying to stay out of our way and let us relax. Breakfast was great and his suggestions for restaurants at the wharf were excellent. I would go when the weather is nicer so we could do more stuff in the area but a great, clean, cozy place to relax in any case.

Recently stayed here for an interview at MMC. The place is very charming and very comfortable. The atmosphere is very intimate. I felt like I stepped back in time when I walked into this place in terms of the atmosphere and ambiance. It did have all the modern amenities such as wifi and cable. The host was very accommodating and helpful. If there was one negative, it would be that there is no kitchen or food service. Breakfast was a plate of fresh fruits and muffins in the fridge. This wasn't a big deal since Portland is famous for its huge number of great restaurants so you might as well explore the town and get some REALLY good food. The rooms were clean and very homey, albeit a bit cold since the mansion is so old and its in Maine. They did provide a space heater if needed. Overall an extremely enjoyable and comfortable stay, and yes, awesome DVD collection.

My husband and I decided to take a trip for our anniversary to Portland after many of our friends raved about it. Hotel options in the city are limited or very pricey. We stumbled on the Morrill Mansion through Trip Advisor and oh, what a find it was! We arrived on a Thursday evening wee bit late due to traffic and a slightly delayed start. I phoned the inn keeper, David to let him know we'd be arriving a bit later than check-in. He was more than courteous and left our keys in a place where we could easily access them. The delight continued as we made our way to our room (Back Cove). The room was well appointed with plenty of space, a large bath tub, plush towels, dish for jewelry/change, DVD player, AC, spacious closet, etc. The entire room was well decorated with high-quality, tasteful linens. The next morning we were delighted to wake up to a very ample breakfast spread that included yogurts, fresh squeezed juices, coffee, tea, fresh-made baked goods, custard, and a wonderful apple crisp-like offering. We met David who was helpful in suggesting activities and places to eat. Over the course of the weekend, we were more and more thrilled with our stay. David has truly thought of every last detail, including a lovely sitting room with a great selection of DVDs and homemade afternoon snacks. He also has set out a listing of some of his favorite places in the city for dining, which was a nice touch since we didn't exactly come prepared :-). All and all, our stay far exceeded our expectations. What was more surprising is that the Inn hasn't been open for very long (a little over a year, maybe more), and you would never have guessed it by how smoothly everything there runs. The Morrill Mansion is a gem and what I feel is the best option for travellers staying in or around the Portland area.

Every time we opened the front door, the aroma of fresh baked goods filled the house! David, the mansion manager is super helpful in suggesting things to do and places to eat. Every room is different with unique charming details. Our room was cozy and comfy. Had a wonderful experience, way better than staying in a boring hotel! We enjoyed our visit to Portland and were surprised at what a foodie town it is!

Moby the pug gives this place five stars alone. Not to mention the super nice innkeeper David, the clean and spacious Burnham Room, the tasty afternoon cookie and cider snack (Oh, I ate so many cookies) and the wonderfully delicious breakfast. Best breakfast of all the B&Bs on my trip! I'm still dreaming of the raspberry yogurt custard thing - I'm not entirely sure what it was but it was SO GOOD.

Perfect in every way! Every amenity has been thought of by the gracious owner. Beautiful rooms, comfy bed, hairdryer, plenty of outlets, etc. Every room was immaculate, so clean. Breakfast was delicious. One morning we were the only guests there and still had a huge continental breakfast waiting, no skimping here. Delicious custards, muffins, etc. It was cold & rainy during our stay but still very walkable to downtown.

I had a GREAT stay at Morrill Mansion B&B. Owner David was so nice, and helpful, without being invasive or pushy. The B&B was recently remodeled, and each room looks and feels more like a room in your own home (but more thematically decorated), rather than a kitchy, floral, antiquated B&B. The beds were comfy with great lines. Ralph Lauren fluffy towels. Nice hairdryer. Mini-fridge, wine glasses and wine opener. Free wireless. A list of favorite nearby restaurants, and driving directions to recommended points of interest. Amazing, entirely home-cooked, breakfast in the morning. Late-night cookies set out in the common room. So many little touches that really made the difference in our stay. Highly recommend!

My husband and I visited Portland last weekend and stayed at the Morrill Masion for 3 nights. The place is fantastic--I couldn't have asked for anything more. In addition to a good selection of cold options (fruit, yogurt, bagel, etc.), there was a different hot option for breakfast every morning (including an incredible egg and lobster souffle type dish one morning) and a different dessert (my favorite was a raspberry custard), and as other posts have mentioned, a different afternoon snack each day (my favorite were the homemade whoopie pies). The bed was very comfortable, the rooms were well decorated, the in-room private bathroom was very nice, and everything we might have needed was there in the room (tv, dvd player with dvds to borrow in the common room, a makeup mirror, water in the mini-fridge, hair dryer, even q-tips!). The price was extremely reasonable, and included on-site parking. A little bit of a walk to the downtown area, but there were plenty of restaurants nearby, and the walk was perfectly pleasant. I'll definitely stay again the next time I'm in Portland!

My husband and I have stayed here twice and we love it! Rooms are very quiet for a B&B and David has the yummiest snacks and breakfast. We particularly love his whoppie pies :). We will be back!!

My husband and I spent one night here on our way up to Acadia. I wish I could have transported this b&b to the bar harbor area because it was absolutely wonderful. David, the host, was so nice and helpful and I loved his pug! It smelled incredible, like fresh baked goods, from the time we walked in until the time we left. The place was spotless and amazingly decorated. Free Wifi, tv and dvd player, and mini fridge in the room. Our room could not have been any cuter and the bed was super comfy. There is a nice little lounge area with dvds to borrow, snacks, drinks, etc. We told David our plans for dinner and he made sure we made reservations since our dining place of choice fills up very quickly. Breakfast in the morning was amazing: French toast, hard boil eggs, fresh fruit, juices, coffee, milks, pastries, homemade raspberry souffle. I feel like I can't even do the place justice in my review. If you are in Portland please go visit for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Morrill Mansion is a great bed-and-breakfast in the wonderful city of Portland, Maine. MM is slightly outside the main downtown area, but I kind of liked this; it was easy to walk to the main area of town and the waterfront. MM is instead in a pleasant residential area with beautiful old brick buildings and tall trees. The B&B is once of the best I've been to. The rooms are tidy and furnished with tasteful antiques. There are fresh, delicious cookies in a nice common living room on the second floor. The owner is very nice and is pretty flexible about checking in, etc. The only thing keeping the Morrill Mansion from a solid five stars is that they don't have a full-service breakfast. Their continental breakfast is great, but I was a little sad that I couldn't have something hot. That was minor, though.

from the moment we arrived, the morrill mansion delivered! the owner, david (and his adorable pug moby), were completely sweet and hospitable. i also appreciated his organization, as he had plenty of typed-up tips ready for our use. we stayed in the burnham room, which had a perfectly luxurious bed, and wonderfully large bathroom (complete with jacuzzi-style tub!) the "lounge" room had free apple cider and chocolate chip cookies, which came in handy around midnight... ... but oh, the breakfast! morrill mansion had the most amazing breakfast! egg quiche, vanilla custard with rasberries, and all sorts of homemade pastries really made this a five star experience! i look forward to another visit in the future!

I had to travel to Portland for an interview in early March and I thought I'd shop for a room at local inn rather than staying at a chain hotel (I prefer to give my money to people over corporations whenever possible). That turned out to be the right choice. The innkeeper gave me a great deal on a room because it was the off season and I booked the day before I went. The inn is tastefully decorated, the accommodations are very comfortable (cozy bed, nice towels, spa bathtub), and I love that the room had amenities like an iron, hairdryer, fridge, cable, and wifi. The innkeeper himself was also very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was not the greatest that I've had at a B&B, but it certainly wasn't the worst either. Overall a wonderful experience.

David, the host, is wonderful!!! I cannot say enough good things about him and this B&B. The home is very cozy and David makes you feel right at home. Upon arriving, we were checked in and taken to our "back cove" room on the 3rd floor. The back cove is spacious with a beautiful bathroom, a TV, and even a little jar of yummy complimentary chocolates and water bottles. The bathroom is LOVELY! I couldn't have asked for better water pressure (and the water was hot!). On the second floor there is a small living room with tons of DVD's to watch in your room, books, and homemade snacks (we had delicious whoopie pies one day and chocolate chip coconut cookies the next day). One of the highlights of my stay was the breakfast!! David REALLY puts a lot of effort into preparing delicious and fresh breakfast dishes every morning. This isn't your regular eggs and bacon- he made turkey sausage egg soufflés, raspberry cream, fresh fruit crumble, the best French toast I've ever had, fresh preserves, very fresh fruit, yogurt, breads, and hot coffee. I could go on and on.. Great host, great food, and great location. Thank you David.

This was absolutely the best B&B I have stayed in during my travels! This place is awesome! The staff were spot on. Friendly and helpful in every way! Best breakfast I have had in a number of years and soooo delicious. Don't get me started on the delectable nightly snacks available for all patrons. Soooo good! Perfect!

Basically, a good B & B experience has to be boiled down to its fundamentals: the bed, the breakfast, the innkeeper, and the location. Nothing more, nothing less. I thusly feel comfortable donating the glory of my 200th review to the Morrill Mansion. There was nothing about this experience that I would have changed, not a bite of breakfast I would have spat out, not a moment spent in bed getting whupped by my boyfriend in a game of Battleship that I consider squandered, not a word exchanged with Innkeeper David that I would have unspoken, and not a moment wasted getting into the heart of Portland. We were upgraded to the Bramhall room, which was spacious and inviting, with beautiful Renaissance bedding and a couch for optimal lounging. The bathroom was clean but nothing special, and there was a mini-fridge replete with two cold bottles of water. And the bed. THE BED. Squishy beyond belief. Had it not been obviously stuffed into my overnight bag, I would have stolen a pillow. And the breakfast. THE BREAKFAST. We were allowed to come and go as we please, within reason, and were treated to the most delicious brunch-style vittles: custards and pancakes, sausage and fruit. The dining room is set up with multiple small tables and small Tiffany-style lamps, and we dined in splendor as though invited to afternoon tea in Great Aunt Agatha's antique sitting room in 1904. The house is nicely off the beaten path with ample parking, and only a five-minute drive from Portland proper. It's wi-fi ready, although that might not please your girlfriend. David is a complete sweetheart, knowledgeable yet unobtrusive, who will engage you in a great conversation or just hand you a map and leave you be. So take his advice, and ours: carb-load in the morning on breakfast and free warm cookies around every nook, go to Local 188 for dinner, grab and armful of boardgames from the parlor room, and spend all remaining hours in bed.

We visited the Morrill Mansion as part of a mother-daughter spring break. David, the innkeeper, was very pleasant and helpful while unintrusive. The games in the sitting rooms were a great diversion and we enjoyed the extras such as tea and cocoa, fresh-baked goodies, and an unexpectedly good DVD collection. The entire home is immaculate, which is saying something given the intricate woodwork and furniture. Our room was well-appointed, comfortable and quiet, despite being across the street from a hospital. Parking was easy. Breakfast, a buffet, was delicious. "Buffet" sounds un-spectacular, but it was very good, with a selection of hot and cold foods, including fruits, and a bit sophisticated. David's restaurant recommendations were spot-on and we had very good meals. We'll be back.

I stayed here with a group of friends. The rooms were clean very well appointed. Not a far walk to town.David did a wonderful job with the breakfast and was very accommodating to our group. I highly recommend the morrill mansion bed and breakfast if you're staying in Portland.

Meticulously maintained with obvious pride by the delightful owner who made us feel welcome. The smell of freshly baked muffins wafted from the kitchen. The rooms are small but perfectly appointed with everything we would need. The owner's attention to detail is remarkable. Although it's not in the busy downtown, we found the location quiet and convenient, within a vigorous walk to the waterfront. Close to bars, restaurants and music galore. A great find!

This is a great B&B. The owner was so helpful when we stayed there for my son's wedding. The breakfast is all home cooked and delicious. It's within easy walking distance of many restaurants and the old port.

I am happy to be able to add another five-star review for Morrill Mansion. I stayed there for only one night on a recent trip to Portland, but I would have been happy to stay longer, and I will be happy to book again if I return. I called a number of B&Bs on the ride from Rhode Island to Portland, as this was quite the impromptu trip, and all of them were booked, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that Morrill Mansion had a couple of rooms open. David, the innkeeper, greeted us upon arrival and was very helpful in suggesting restaurants that we might want to visit based on our likes and dislikes. He obviously knows a great deal about Portland and is passionate about its culture, which is a great attribute for someone who does what he does! After we checked in, David showed us to our room, the Vaughn room, which was very nice, cozy, and very reasonably priced to boot! It was a medium-sized room with a big comfy bed, plenty of bottled waters in the mini-fridge, and so many of the comforts of home that one desires in a B&B. David even has a sizable collection of movies, which actually came in handy as I was getting over a cold during our visit and we called it a night relatively early. There is a living room on every floor with hot water to make coffee and a plate of home-baked goodies that I could not partake in, but I was told that they were absolutely delicious. In the morning, we enjoyed quite the breakfast spread. There were scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, home fries, fresh fruit, some kind of yummy berry and oatmeal crumble, as well as toast, bagels, cream cheese, and yogurts. Yum! I am not super familiar with Portland, but I believe that the B&B is in the West End, so it's a bit of a walk to get to the Old Port, which is where most of the action is in this city. Maybe fifteen minutes, though, nothing outrageous. I personally like to walk through a city to get to know it, so this was not a problem for me, however if you're looking for somewhere super central, this might not be the place for you. All in all, however, I have zero complaints, and I would gladly recommend Morrill Mansion to anyone visiting Portland!

Just got back from a stay there and I was so impressed. The rooms were so clean and well stocked, the beds were extremely comfortable and the towels were enormous and so soft. David, the host, was very nice and personable.

Great place to stay. David greeted us warmly and as he checked us in chatted about local eateries. We are both vegan and he went out of his way to recommend great local restaurants and provide amazing eggless French Toast, Custard, pancakes! There are extra nice touches like water for tea and coffee in the hallway (and I must apologize for us using up ALL the coffee packets), chocolates in the room, snacks in communal rooms. The Inn is perfectly situated - 10 minute walk from everything (well, 30 minutes to the harbor....) We're looking for reasons to come to Portland just to be able to stay here again. (Can't wait for the next Maine Red Claws basketball season!) Only question - what's with the insanely high beds! : )

My wife and I just stayed 3 nights at Morrill Mansion and had a fantastic stay. We stayed in the Burnham Room on the 2nd floor which was a very comfortable room with a cheery spacious bathroom with a nice jetted tub. The inn was very clean and had many comfortable touches, from good Wi-Fi to nice sitting areas on each floor with snacks and beverages set out at various times of the day (including incredible homemade whoopee pies!). David's breakfasts were hearty and delicious - we enjoyed an egg souffle one morning with lobster in it, French toast with an apple compote another morning, and other items on the buffet (at various times) included homemade cherry muffins, berry custards, a pineapple and cherry crisp, turkey sausage, fresh fruit, good coffee and juices, and a variety of bagels, toast, cereal and yogurt. No one will go hungry! We very much enjoyed the West End neighborhood the B&B is in, and for us, it was a great respite from the busy Old Port area. Yes, the Morrill Mansion is about a 20 minute walk to the Old Port (or quick 5 minute drive) but it's an easy and interesting walk, and it's only 10 minutes on foot to numerous restaurants on Congress Street and in the West End. and to the Portland Art Museum. We were blown away by the incredible Victorian and Queen Anne homes just blocks away and highly recommend to everyone staying at the Morrill Mansion that you take a 30-45 minute walk around this neighborhood. Ask David and he will point you in the right direction but basically, you want to walk on Western Promenade Ave. and hit all the cross streets. The homes were simply amazing. We would definitely stay here again and will recommend it to friends/family.

My partner and I stayed here for a few days this September. It's in a nice neighborhood and the owner, David, is very helpful and accommodating. It's not tacky, like some of the B & B's I've visited. The room was modern and comfortable. It was in walking distance to downtown. We brought our bikes, which David let us lock up in a bike shed. Breakfast was wonderful, as well as the afternoon snacks! There is always coffee and tea available on every floor. He even let us check in early, which I appreciated because I was exhausted. I gave it 4 stars because our room didn't come with a parking space. We had to park on the street during the week, and at the hospital up the street on the weekend days after 5. All in all, it was a great experience, and I would stay there again.

I stayed at the Mansion midweek for an interview. I don't typically stay at B&B's but this experience may have converted me. Everything was so clean and fresh! They even left a plate of breakfast in my mini-fridge because they knew I would have to leave very early in the morning. Owner is so friendly and helpful, and the inn is super quiet but in a very lively part of town. Loved it, and I'll be back!

I had never stayed at a b&b, or been to Portland before, but Morrill Mansion was the perfect place to stay. David was very helpful in suggesting places and narrowing down things we had researched. It was a really nice, clean place with tons of space. Breakfast was casual and filling. I would recommend this to someone who wanted something different from a hotel.

I stayed at the Morrill Mansion on my first visit to Portland. I wasn't so sure about the location when I first pulled up, given that it is located near a hospital and is on a fairly busy street, but the building itself is quite lovely. The Bed and Breakfast is impeccably maintained and tastefully decorated. David is friendly but definitely very reserved. He allows you to have your privacy but will also provide helpful suggestions for dining and exploring. I stayed in the Vaughn room. I was a bit disappointed that it had a standing shower and not a bathtub. After the four hour drive from Connecticut I was looking forward to a good soak. That aside, the room was very comfortable with all of the amenities that you would expect, including a mini fridge and some of the most plush towels that I've ever dried off with. There is also free WiFi which was great. I have a bit of a fragrance sensitivity so I was not fond of the plug-in in the bathroom but I should probably have requested a fragrance free room ahead of time. Breakfast runs from 8-10 and though I came down at about 9:45, there was still quite a bit of food to choose from including fresh fruit, juices, coffee, scones baked by David, chocolate mouse and french toast. Very tasty! Overall this was a great value for money and a gem of a find. I plan on returning the next time I visit Portland. Highly recommend!

Pros: awesome breakfast.....very very clean......very fancy....extremely nice friendly owner....location is great..... Cons: parking not the best but most places don't have parking (so it's not that big of a con).....prices are actually higher than the website says

Morrill Mansion was divine and is simply the best B&B in Portland. My boyfriend and I stayed in the Vaughn room off-season for a weekend getaway and our stay was not only completely lovely but also reasonably priced. David has created a warm, comfortable environment without any of the stuffy, clichéd elements many New England establishments have clung to. Everything was spotless and well thought out from the rooms to recommendations to mid-day snacks and a full DVD collection! The plush bed was so comfy, we barely could drag ourselves downstairs had it not been for the wafting scents of eggs with lobster and fresh bread pudding. While it's a 15 minute walk to Old Port, I enjoyed being somewhat removed from the main scene and having the opportunity to see more of the city - not to mention walking off some of the fabulous caloric meals Portland has to offer! This was only the first of what I assume will be many more trips from Boston! Thanks again David for your hospitality and graciousness in running a sublime business!

I wish I could do half stars, I'd really give this a 4.5 rating. We stayed for a long weekend (Friday-Sunday) and were very pleased with Morrill Mansion. We arrived a few hours before official check in and because we had contacted the innkeeper beforehand, we had arranged an early check in. We were still too early for the early check in so he let us drop our luggage (where it was taken to our room) and then we headed out. This could have been avoided with a rental car, but we chose not to have a car for the weekend, so the innkeeper was very accommodating in that respect. When we finally did check in after wandering around and eating lunch, the house was great. Nice, intimate layout but still privacy from other guests. Homemade baked goods (whoopie pies one day, peanut butter chocolate bars the net), coffee/tea station on each floor, comfortable rooms, and a general cozy atmosphere really warmed me to this B&B. Breakfasts were delicious. A continental style breakfast buffet, but a high step above a typical hotel breakfast. Good variety of fruits, breads, bagels, spreads, yogurt, etc. with some "specialty items" thrown in (pancakes and custard, one day; lobster & egg bake and bread pudding the next). The innkeeper is a FANTASTIC cook. Checkout is at 11am but our flight was at 6pm, so the innkeeper offered to hold our luggage in the kitchen/office until we came back to get it later that afternoon, making things very easy since we were car-less. He was very friendly and chatted with us as we waited for the taxi and was a very organized and social man without being super overbearing and nosy. The only reason I say 4.5 and not 5 stars is the distance/area of town. The maps don't lie, it isn't super far from downtown, but sometimes it felt a little too removed from the main scene. It would have been 5 stars if it was located 10 minutes east. If you aren't renting a car, just be aware of this and bring some comfortable shoes :)

such a cute quaint and comfortable place. staying at MM allows you to check out what a typical new england house looks like on the inside. David, the owner, is great in all ways. **this place is small (the house is old but that's the charm in a B&B) and the stairs are narrow, so dont bring heavy bulky luggage. our room was furnished with a mini fridge filled with water and chocolates, our own bathroom with toiletries, fluffy fluffy fluffy towels, TV and DVD player (DVDs available to watch if you're staying in) and wifi. street parking available or park in his lot. we were served with a simple breakfast buffet (eggs with turkey bacon, potatoes, cold/hot cereals, juices, toast/bagels and peach crisp). this was such a nice place to arrive upon after a long drive from Boston. the beds were comfortable too.

My girlfriend and I escaped the city life for a weekend to have a cozy getaway at the Morrill Mansion. I have stayed at a couple b&bs around New England and this was by far the best. The breakfast was top notch, the room was beautiful ( I recommend staying in the Burham room, it has a jetted tub and a gorgeous gold ceiling). We did not have a car, the b&b was very accessible to the sweet town via walking. The owner was incredibly friendly and offered some great suggestions for local cuisine. We will most certainly be back!

Beautiful old brick mansion restored into a bed and breakfast. We stayed for 2 nights in the Mcguire room on the 3rd floor, which had a queen size bed and a private bath. You can tell the owner/operator cares a lot about the quality of this place and the comfort of the guests. Noise: Although the house is very old, we did not hear any of the other guests or noises from the other rooms or hallways. Very quiet. No creaking, plumbing, or ghost noises! Bedroom: Small room with queen-size mattress, newer television, refrigerator. Mattress was newer and very comfortable. It was difficult to wake up in the morning. Bathroom: The bathroom adjourning our room was recently remodeled and very well finished. My concern with old houses is disruptions such as hot water running out 3 mins into a shower or smells and mold. This bathroom was IMMACULATE, clean, and had plenty of lights with new fixtures. BREAKFAST: Buffet style with your standard cereals, oatmeal, and fruit, BUT also imaginative and wonderful items like fluffy pancakes served with hot blueberries and egg souffles (including vegetarian options). Also, some fresh basked items like blueberry muffins and cinnamon rolls. The owner was very attentive and kept plenty of coffee ready to serve and all the food dishes replenished. Parking: They have a very small lot with space for 6 or 7 cars, but it is very challenging to get in and out of. What can you expect for a house built in a time before cars though. Fortunately there is a plenty of street parking too and it's 2 blocks from Maine Medical Center so the neighborhood appears to be pretty safe. We will stay here again..and use this as a place for the out-of-town in-laws to stay!

Had a wonderful stay over the weekend. Breakfasts were wonderful, rooms were perfect. David had even arranged to have a gift from our children on ice to help us celebrate our 30th Anniversay. What a great touch. Even though the neighborhood reflects the working character of the city, the atmosphere and service makes this a favorite stay. Well done!

The perfect Portland B&B stay. Thanks David for taking such great care of us. I was in Portland for work and decided to book at the Morrill Mansion. The location was quiet, yet near everything. Our room was roomy and so comfortable. Every afternoon I would come home to fresh baked treats. If you want to taste the best whoopie pies in Portland, stay here. Every morning a full breakfast was ready for me before I left. Kev joined me and was given sightseeing tips by David making it a really wonderful holiday while I worked...not fair! Loved this place!!! We stayed in the Bramhall Room...spacious with a private bath.

Probably the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in was here at Morrill Mansion. This B&B hits it out of the park with all of those little touches that make you feel well taken care of...a collection of DVDs to choose from, homemade treats available in the common room, a nook by the window with magazines, etc. Don't stay here if you dislike warm fuzzy feelings. It was a very cozy stay. I loved it - thanks David!

Wonderful innkeeper, great breakfasts... Our room was decorated beautifully and the afternoon snacks and drinks hit the spot. I forgot to ask for recipes. They even stocked the fridge with a cake and bubbly to celebrate our honeymoon and included a sweet note. David was helpful and friendly and the "maid" services were so stealthy and thorough it was like being visited by elves. It is a bit of a walk to certain places but not a problem. It was such a welcoming place- I only wished we could have heard more of its history because I like that sort of thing. It definitely had a different flavor than the southern b&bs I've visited but its the difference between loving Maine lobster or loving North Carolina barbecue- I love them both for different reasons.

i just realized i never got around to writing a review of morrill mansion, where we stayed for a "mini-moon" after we got married in the fall of 2009. hey, better late than never! we LOVED staying here. it was so wonderful. the room we stayed at was one of the bigger rooms, with a giant tub. every day we'd soak in the tub together and read for hours. there was also a little fridge so we were able to keep the bottle of champagne we bought cold. the room itself was very cozy and comfortable with a super comfy bed. everything was spotless and immaculate. and there were cookies every day, if i remember correctly! we probably most enjoyed the breakfast, which was amazing! it was my first time staying at a b&b so having other couples around also eating breakfast took some getting used to. unfortunately it's been a long time since we stayed so i can't remember specifically what we ate but i remember all of the options being fantastic. i would definitely stay here again the next time we come to portland!

We had a great time at Morrill Mansion. Breakfasts were great and the room was very nice as well. David was a great host and we would stay here again on our next visit to Portland. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

We just got back from a night at the Morrill Mansion, and it far exceeded my expectations! The place is immaculate, our room was modern, clean, and had everything we needed, including towels that are far larger than the regular hotel towels that hardly wrap around you, a high-quality hair dryer, and a bowl of hershey's nuggets, which were exactly what I wanted after a day of shopping in Portland :) David, the innkeeper, is very pleasant, and makes a phenomenal breakfast. He puts out a buffet of the usuals - yogurt, cereal, fruit - and then goes above and beyond by whipping up fresh pancakes with fruit compote, eggpless custards, fruit tarts, etc, etc...and he also bakes fresh cookies, which he leaves in a common area upstairs with iced tea and other beverage options. The inn is not super close to the downtown, it's a bit of a hike if you're walking, but there is a parking lot, which is key, since parking seems to be a bit of an ordeal in the town. I would definitely go back and stay here again!

The Morrill Mansion is a wonderful B&B, and if you really love the B&B experience this one should be at the top of your list to visit. The rooms were meticulous, every detail was attended to. It was clean, cozy, elegantly appointed and quiet. David, who runs the B&B, is a wonderful host who was very helpful with tourist tips and always friendly and accommodating. He is detail oriented and very organized, two prized characteristics for a B&B owner. The staff followed in that model. The food was excellent (breakfast feature favorite, lobster scrambled eggs!!!) and the kitchen could accommodate my dietary restrictions. The Morrill is walking distance to everything you will want to see or visit in Portland. The price was fair, especially compared to the big hotels and especially for the quality of service, food and lodging. If you are a New Englander and need a quick weekend getaway for a night or two, I highly recommend the Morrill Mansion, especially off season (for the best pricing). You will not be disappointed with your stay. I can't speaking highly enough about the Morrill, if you visit Portland it should be the ONLY place you book your lodging.

My husband and I stayed here for our babymoon in early November. It's in a great location since it is walking distance to all of the restaurants in the downtown area. And the rooms are just beautiful! We stayed at a couple of B&Bs in different cities during our vacation, and this was our favorite. David, the innkeeper, really thinks of everything. There are chocolates in your room. There are fresh baked goods & chips at all times, so if you get hungry after dinner or something, you aren't stuck waiting until breakfast. And the breakfast is very yummy! The rooms are clean, very comfortable, and decorated very nicely. We were flying in a little late, so we called David to let him know, and he was very accommodating on this matter. The only negative that happened was that one of the cars parked in the lot behind the inn was broken into, and our car (possibly) got a scratch from this incidence since it was parked next to the car that got broken into.

My boyfriend and I came here for a weekend away, offseason, and we had a wonderful time. We stayed in the Morrill Suite for $149/night, and the room included a private bathroom with a jetted bathtub, bath salts, a mini fridge, free bottled waters and chocolates, a wine opener, and cocktail glasses. (*The only thing I would mention is, that if you don't want your room cleaned, make sure to tell the Innkeeper-there is no option to ask for your room to be or not to be cleaned, so we assumed it would not be touched, and we were wrong!*) We were located on the second floor, the same floor as the common room which also included tea, coffee, & hot chocolate 24 hours/day, board games, fresh baked snacks, and a free DVD library to choose from to take back to your room! The B&B is run single-handedly by David and his adorable pug, Moby, and David is so very friendly while still being respectful of your privacy. He makes breakfast every morning, and it's a small buffet with many things to choose from, including a hot and cold homemade treat, fresh fruit, cold and hot cereal, bagels, english muffins, juice, milk, and coffee. If you're even planning to spend some time in Portland, I would absolutely recommend staying here. It's far enough away from Old Port that the area is quiet, but if you don't mind the walk on a nice day, you can walk to where the restaurants and shops are in 15-20 minutes. This was my first experience at a B&B, and I left with a wonderful, warm, and relaxed feeling I've never gotten from a hotel.

My mom and I spent one night at this amazing B&B on our way back from northern Maine to Boston. All I can see is PERFECT. David is the nicest man in the world. He greeted us at the door on a stormy night, followed closely by the adorably pug Moby. After a swift check-in, he grabbed our bags, showed us around and set us up in our room, Back Cove. It was everything we wanted after a long trip: serene greens and tans, lush bedding, jacuzzi tub, flat screen tv + cable + dvd player. A hot drink station on our (top) floor, a cozy living room with treats, games and movies on the second floor and CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN. This place is impeccable; every detail has been thought of. After a sound and cushy night's sleep, we were greeted with the best breakfast, all done by David himself who slaves away in the kitchen while we chatted with other guests. Eggs with ham, homemade raspberry muffins, fruit, juice, coffee, toast/bagels - and the custard! It has been mentioned in reviews for MM before but it is really to die for. There is absolutely nothing I would change about my stay except for having at least one more night there. Will definitely return!

We stayed at the Morrill Mansion for one night on or way up to Blue Hill for a few days of relaxation. It is by far the best B&B we have ever visited, it was incredible. The host David is very friendly and helpful, on top of that he is a great chef. Our room was spotless and nicely decorated, it includes a TV with a plethora of channels and free WiFi. It's the small details that sets this place apart from other establishments; freshly baked desserts in the guest common room, coffee & tea setup throughout the B&B, chocolates and bottled water in the room, fresh baked goods, juice, etc.. for breakfast. Highly recommended.
