HOW CAN SOUP BE SO GOOD?! Seriously. I mean, SOUP. But these people made soup their thing, and they killed it. Because their soup is mind-blowingly delicious. My family all decided to eat at Granny's Burritos but I opted for the soup because I thought if they opened up this entire place for soup, and they sold their soups at various outposts throughout the city, then they must be good. Best decision. I couldn't figure out if I should go with the loaded potato or the jalapeno beer cheddar, so I ended up getting the smallest cup of both rather than a larger bowl of one. Even better decision! It reaffirmed my suspicions about their awesomeness, because both of those soups were freaking awesome. They even came with fresh-out-of-the-oven buns, so I gave one to my kiddos and I used the other to sop up my soup. I'm going to be dreaming about that soup for weeks. I must learn how to make soup like this. Also, the lemonade was bomb.

I'm a sucker for a clever name and Kamasouptra fits the bill due in no small part to their sexy, sexy soups. In fact, this would be a perfect opportunity to illustrate the sexy ways one can eat their sexy soups but, alas, Yelp doesn't yet allow illustrative reviews. Yesterday was my second visit to Kamasouptra. The Public Market can get a little noisy, particularly when there are events in the evening downtown but at lunch it was quiet and relatively empty. I ordered the potato soup, said yes to the addition of bacon, and inhaled the entire bowl in a matter of minutes. They very helpfully list what soups are gluten free and vegetarian for people with food restrictions and even offer a gluten free roll. I think it may be a good thing I don't work closer to Monument Square or I might possibly eat all my lunches there.

I used to work in downtown Portland, and this place was my lunchtime savior. Great selection of tasty soups, delicious warm bread, super quick service and very friendly staff. So simple, and so good.

I am a loaded baked potato soup addict (and of *course* I want bacon in it). This is the only soup I've tried there, with the exception of the Sebago beer and cheddar soup (and only because they were out of loaded potato). It was spicier than I was expecting, which isn't a bad thing, but not entirely what I was in the mood for. The rolls are super good and are part of my reason for even going. It makes me a little sad that they carry Pepsi products now. I'm just not a huge fan or superbrands like that, but oh well. The only thing I've ever had from them that I haven't liked was the lemonade. It was pretty much sugar water with a couple lemon slices thrown in. Those things aside, I love Kamasouptra.

Eaten here a couple times and enjoyed every meal. Their soups are perfect on a chilly day. They range from thick creamy, to diluted. Always warm and served alongside a cute as hell bun of bread to dip or just clean the bottom of the bowl with. the portions are enough without breaking any banks. This place is an honest-to-goodness gem in this city. They've found a niche and excel in that. I only wish they were open later than 7 on most nights, when you're just craving some late night soup. I prefer the thicker varieties, flavorful, and filling. You can sample soups to, or mix and match as well. As for the marketplace itself, there are other vendors upstairs and down, and you should really give them all a try because they're local, and quite good, and reasonably cheap. There is a bakery, small market, and produce/meat/cheese place downstairs. I've sampled some great cheeses, and bought some local beers here. Don't expect a high-class fine dining experience, or even middle-class really. It's a seat yourself, take what you can find type place. All of the un-matching chairs + tables look used, and kinda wobbly. Who even knows who wipes the tables off. But it's also what defines the character and ambiance of this place.

This place is fabulous. The service was really friendly and helpful, and they know their soups really well (and make excellent recommendations). Ask to sample a few you're interested in; they're happy to oblige. Very well priced (less than $5 for a cup, just over $5 for a bowl), and they'll mix two soups if you want. Tons of vegetarian or vegan options, and every cup comes with a large, warm roll. Everything was super tasty and I'll definitely be back, if I'm in the area. Finding a seat in the Public Market can be a little tricky during busy times, but off-peak it's fine.

Oh man, so good. I've visited both the Monument Square location as well as the Maine Mall - both excellent. Everyone working there is always so happy and friendly, the soup selection is amazing, and the soup itself (and the bread!) is to die for. Plus they sometimes have donuts from The Holy Donut. YES.

Always good. I eat here at least once a month. Never been bad. Only one time they were out of rolls. I like the vegan and vegetarian options.

Great soup and they serve with hot fresh and delicious rolls. Good for a winter like this. The curried root vegetable is my favorite. Love the veg chili and grilled. Cheese and tomato too. Sometimes s line but it moves quickly. The staff is always friendly and happy.

I don't usually order soup when I am out but it was a cold weekend and soup seemed appropriate.. plus I've heard good things. I sampled the broccoli cheddar which I found a bit lacking in flavor. I ended up opting for the "Grilled Cheese and Tomato" which is essentially a creamy tomato soup, but a really good one. The prices are very reasonable and come with a large whole wheat roll that is soft and delicious. I was all ready to give them 4 or 5 stars... The next day I found myself talking up the soup to my mom so we went over and I decided to go for the chili this time (meat not veggie). I probably should have tried it first but I assumed it would be good...unfortunately, it was just O-K. It had zero kick that you want in chili and it was exceptionally runny as far as chili goes. It tasted like someone was cooking a tomato sauce with meat and it wasn't done cooking yet. Overall 3.5 star rating. It's still a place I'll come back to but I'll be more careful about my selections.

LOVE the soup here. Sebago Beer and Cheddar is a must have. Ive tried a couple others as well but it is just so hard not to get the beer and cheddar soup. The rolls that it comes with are delicious. The portions are gigantic and the prices are reasonable. And all the people that work there are really nice and super cute too!! Go get soup!

I visited for the first time because I had a "buy one, get one free" coupon from the Sunshine Guide. Despite the other reviews, I found the soup selections quite nice. They also now let you taste samples in advance. Except for a few staple offerings, eg. Veggie Chili, the soups change on a daily basis. I tried the Curry & Quinoa and Artichoke w/Turnips & Potatoes. Your order comes with a generously sized gluten-free roll. I highly recommend them if you are a vegan or eat gluten-free. Check their online menu for the day's selection.

WOW. Me and the ladyfriend stopped by the Portland Public Market House on a whim and found this place. Anyhow, she's into soup and got a piping bowl of their curry lentil. After having a taste, I immediately had to have my own soup! I got the mushroom barley which was flavorful and light. I was totally sold by the bread that the soup comes with. It's like eating a big, warm, thing of awesome. Just enough salt and it goes perfectly with their other soups. We were so impressed with this jam, that we decided to stop here before flying back to New York the next day. I highly recommend this, especially on a cold winter day. If I lived in other Portland, I'd totally crank some AMEBIX or PENTAGRAM and eat a big bowl of Kamasouptra to feel warm again. ARISE, GOOD SOUP!

This soup is so good... the seating sucks, but it's Monument Square at lunch... to be expected I suppose. Their Ribollita is out of this world.

This place is boss. My bowl of chili and the tasty sphere of bread it came with literally made me mumble, "Jesus Christ this is good."

These soups are the BEST!! Faves include red pepper and gouda, beer and cheddar, beef chili, loaded mashed potato. The warm roll is crispy on outside and soft on the inside and perfect for sopping up soup with.

I had a giant "cup" ("cup"=more like a bowl... can't imagine how big the bowls must be... like vats?) of spicy tomato soup, and it was to DIE for! And it came with a warm, crusty roll to sop it up with. The tomato soup was slightly creamy, quite spicy as advertised, and just so well seasoned that it totally exceeded expectations. FOR $2.75. Really, guys, what else can you ask for? I'd also like to add that when I went there, there were cute boys behind the counter working. So 1) big portion of steamy soup 2) soup is delicious 3) comes with warm freshly baked roll 4) cheap as all hell 5) cute boys! Win. I'll be back a lot this winter, I'm sure!

We went to Kamasouptra on a Saturday afternoon because we had a sweet "buy one, get one" coupon and are always looking for new, veggie friendly places that don't break the bank. I got the "mushroom barley" and the boyfriend got the "vegetarian chili." Impressed with the price? Absolutely! It was only $5.50 for a cup of soup. Impressed with the food? Not really. The soup I make is better than either soup I tasted. My "mushroom barley" had no mushroom in it; and, my boyfriend's "chili" was far thinner than we were expecting, it resembled something more like a "spicy black bean" soup. Impressed with the service? Definitely not. The girl who took our order seemed agitated that we had a coupon, wouldn't speak to us, and barely made eye contact. There was a highlight, though: the best part was the homemade roll that came with it. It was warm, soft, and had crystals of salt encrusted in the top - it was absolutely delicious and made it worth it. I'll check this place out again and try something different (mostly I'll be going for the roll), but if it doesn't blow my mind, I see no reason coming back a third time. Great for quick food, plenty of veggie options, but a little lackluster in my opinion.

I tried Kamasouptra for the first time last week, and I was actually pretty excited. I couldn't figure out why I was so excited to try a vegetarian soup shop, but I was. A friend has raved to me about the vegetarian chili she had (the "Kamasouptra chili," I believe) and so she took me to try their other soups. Portland Public Market House is cool. There was some live folk music playing while we ate. The girl that got us our food was very polite and quick, I'll give her that. The soup, however, was disappointing. I can't remember what my friend had, but she said it wasn't great, or at least not as good as the chili. I had the New England clam chowder. It was way too salty and I thought had too many onions. Reading the reviews here, someone else thought the same thing. I didn't have many clams in mine either. I will say that the rolls are awesome. Huge, light, fluffy rolls. I would honestly go back just for one of them. Maybe I'll have to try a different soup. Hopefully I'll be able to give this review another star or two.

LOVE this place! We perused the Portland Market on a road trip and were so stoked we found Kamasouptra. We tried several soups (all amazing but we settled on the vegetarian chilli...my meat-eater husband said it was the best veggie chilli he'd ever had) and the guys behind the counter were awesome. They let us sample locally brewed root beer and ginger beers they had on tap and were super friendly and helpful. Their bread was AMAZING and there were delicious pumpkin cream whoopie pies at the counter...to die for. Overall, we absolutely loved this spot!

What a fun and funky way to start the day or have a surprisingly good lunch. The soups are inventive, delicious and well priced. The bread that accompanied the soup was more than ample and as delicious as the soup. If you can't make up your mind which soup you want, create your own hybrid by blending the two you can't decide between. The "Soup Nazi" has nothing on these guys!

I had a Portland Dinearound coupon for a buy one/ get one free so I figured I'd try TWO soups. (In my defense I got them in take out containers). I tried the beer/ cheddar and NE Clam Chowder. SCORE! clam chowder was thick, clammy, very hot, perfect potato/onion proportions. Beer cheddar also delicious, thinner and with a hint of curry ( could have been the hops). Also perfectly hot. Friends had bowls of other offerings that were also tasty. I recommend taste-testing the choices. Go ahead and sample, because you're definately going to find several that make it hard to choose. Big boules of bread were excellent. Looking forward to making it a regular stop.

Everything was very good. You can get a wonderful soup and large roll for under $10 and it is very filling. You can also take tastes of their soups before purchase. The employee working was very personable and engaging. The soups were great and there was a good variety. We visited them at the public market house location which is kind of tricky to find because it is upstairs.

I had great expectations for this place, and even gave it a second try after a disappointing first visit. But I won't be back. The first soup I tried was the clam chowder, which was very salty & incredibly heavy on the onions. (And don't get me wrong, I like onions.) Plenty of clams, though, and the roll that accompanied the chowder was heavenly. The portion was generous & the price was great. So I figured I'd try again. I got the beef chili on my 2nd visit and it was almost inedible. Greasy film on the top. The chili consisted of ground beef & onions in a bland, vaguely tomato-y broth. No spice, beans or vegetables to speak of. I could not even finish my bowl - threw half of it away. The staff was nice & the place seems busy. As I said, the prices are great. But given that I'm 0 for 2 on the soup, I'm not expecting to return.

This is the only place I go for soup. Delicious offerings, made fresh daily, many of which are vegan. And a nice warn roll, also made fresh. Simple and perfect! I love that they are expanding and that you can find their soups around town -- Bard, Maine Squeeze, etc.

I loved the concept and the name, but the soup just wasn't that good. Tried the jalapeño cheddar beer and my wife had the corn chowder. Mine had no hint of jalapeño whatsoever. It might have been ok as a dipping sauce for pretzels but not as soup. The roll that came with it was a weird choice too, pretty much just a bland bulky roll. French baguette might be a better idea. My wife avoids salt like the plague but even she wanted to add some to the corn chowder. Spices would help this place greatly. Bummer.

Awesome soups. People who love soups should try this place. A bowl of chili is good for a person for lunch
