Diabetics at Village Inn

Village Inn is a tough place for diabetics, and you must be extra cautious while ordering food at the Village Inn, especially if you're a diabetic. The food items low in sodium are high in sugar or cholesterol at Village Inn which makes it difficult for diabetics to choose the right food at the diner.

Foods to Avoid at Village Inn for Diabetics

Village Inn offers very few items edible for diabetics without any threat. You can avoid sandwiches and burgers at Village Inn and try the light breakfast items on the menu. You must also skip the shakes as well as other juices from the beverage menu. Almost all the dinner items on the menu are high in sodium except Grilled Tilapia and 6 oz. Top Sirloin & Toast. My girlfriend and I were only in town for one quick night but everything about our stay at the Inn At ParkSpring was pitch perfect. Is clear that Buddy and Deborah have already started to change some of the shortcomings of the previous ownership and have done a beautiful job. Our room was incredibly comfortable, perfect for a cold Maine winter night. Short + easy walk to everything in town, and great recommendations from Deborah to boot. We'll be back.

My girl and I stayed here for one night while we were visiting Portland. The location is great, within walking distance to the Old Port. The room was clean and very spacious. The breakfast was very good. The owner was kind and very attentive. Great place to stay if you are visiting Old Port.

My parents came up to Portland to visit recently and this is where they stayed. I ended up staying a night as well because it was so cozy. I highly recommend this B&B! Breakfast is HEAVEN, the rooms are nice, the beds are comfortable, and its very conveniently located.

Our stay is currently in progress. I think I should note that the Inn changed ownership hands in late 2013 so all reviews prior to that might not indicate current standards. This place is adorable. So why the 5 stars? Because people who go the extra mile deserve just that and Buddy and Deborah are top notch. They are always available and help you if your flight arrives early. The little extras are nice: waters and tea downstairs and some snacks for all your walking. Don't forget breakfast in the morning thanks to Deb! While most places serve you egg product and stale bagels you can literally smell the roasted potatoes starting in the morning as Deb and someone else prep everything. Conveniently located. We walked everywhere! Less than a mile to Hadlock field for a game and minutes/blocks from all the shops and restaurants. A dumpling restaurant literally at the foot of the steps to the inn. Our room was charming. We stayed in Room 1. Clean, hardwood floors and comfy bed! For having never been to a bed and breakfast this was a great first experience. When you walk around Portland and see the Holiday Inn, Westin et al you really are charmed that you feel like you are in someone's home. Cozy but clean!

Just called to cancel my reservation for 4 months from now due to personal reasons. The woman told me she had to charge me 25$ for the cancellation. When I asked why, she said "Its every Inn and every Hotel"..(which isn't true, most hotels you have up until 24 hours beforehand to cancel). So when I said this to her she said "Yes they do" and HUNG UP ON ME. SUPER UNPROFESSIONAL. I was actually looking forward to this Inn because of the previous good reviews I read. But that was SUPER RUDE!!!!

The Inn at Park Spring exceeded our expectations. We've stayed in several b&bs, and this is one of the best so far. Breakfast: remarkable. The food is delicious, fresh, elaborate, and served at a beautifully set table. Guests have a choice between two breakfast meals, but I doubt you can go wrong. Rooms: exceptionally clean. spectacularly clean. We had the good fortune to stay in the Gables Room, which is large and bright with a big bathroom. The bed (a king size, rare at B&Bs!) was comfortable and outfitted with thick, luxurious sheets and bedding. Loved it, and didn't want to leave! Proprietor: John is a gracious and excellent host. He let us check in early without so much as a frown, served breakfast and sat around and chatted with guests after introducing everyone to each other by name, and was helpful and accommodating. Downsides: Negligible to none. But -- Gables Room was on the third floor with two steep flights to climb, so our big and heavy suitcase didn't make it up, and anyone with any physical ailments probably won't either. There didn't seem to be any rooms on the first floor or an elevator, unfortunately. The third floor got a bit hot in the uncharacteristically warm weather, but again, this is a fabulous bed and breakfast at a great price. Walking distance to everything in the city. I can only hope we have other B&B experiences half as good as this one!

i can't say enough good things about the Inn at Park Spring! i just returned from a three-day, three-night stay, and it was not only my first visit to Portland, but to a bed and breakfast. Buddy & Deb are wonderful innkeepers, and also happen to be warm, welcoming, and remarkably thoughtful human beings. in the interest of time/space, i'll list a few highlights: - they send an email ahead of your arrival with detailed suggestions and directions that are incredibly helpful--and, more importantly, accurate. you can park right in front of the inn while you get checked in, bring in your bags, etc., and then you can park your car in a private lot less than a block away. - the inn is located in a very safe part of town, and just a few blocks from the amazing shops and restaurants of of Old Port. the main door of the inn is secured with an electronic keypad, so you can come and go as you please without being worried about anything at all - upon welcoming me, deb sat down to chat in a very friendly, genuine way. no rushing. both she and buddy, who i met later in the week, made me feel valued and comfortable as a guest, not a customer. - i didn't even have to remind anyone about my allergies (tree nuts and shellfish) - the food is amazing! i actually only had breakfast at the inn on one morning, but it was delicious. stuffed french toast, bacon, fresh fruit, and a hot cup of tea. buddy and deb also bake goodies every afternoon--brownies and cookies while i was there. - upon departing, i would be embarking on a 9-hour drive, so i was eager to get on the road as early as possible. i talked to buddy about it, and they were perfectly fine with me leaving before the regularly scheduled checkout time (11am). i was able to handle my check-out the day before, and buddy and deb left a to-go bag for me! i left the inn at 5am, with a hot cup of tea and a bag full of goodies for the road: a huge, fresh blueberry muffin, a banana, a few granola bars, and other assorted candies. so thoughtful. a couple tips: - i stayed up on the third floor, and it got a bit warm up there. my room (the smaller one) had a free-standing A/C unit, which was awesome!, but I don't think all the rooms do. so, just something to be aware of. - the Wi-fi was working, but sometimes a little slow and I could not connect at all on my last night. I wasn't concerned with this at all, and it may just be that the third floor is farther from the main router. overall, i highly recommend staying at Park Spring if you're visiting Portland. it's close to everything, and buddy and deb are top-notch innkeepers. i hope to return soon!

I couldn't rave enough about this place. Buddy and Deborah are wonderful hosts. They're great cooks and wonderful people. Do yourself a favor and stay with them for a night or three.

My husband and I recently spent the first night of our honeymoon here. Deborah, the Innkeeper, was wonderful. She was great to connect with the inn was right around the corner from our favorite restaurant in Portland, the Green Elephant, and a short walk to Old Port. The breakfast at the inn was gorgeous and delicious. Deborah even accommodated the fact that we were vegetarian. I look forward to staying here again!

Would give 4.5 (I never give 5) stars because this was a wonderful home away from home for 5 days in August. Hmmm... let me count the ways... +Deborah and Buddy - so friendly, and each wonderful in her/his own way. Just ask for input and they'll make sure you get to do/see whatever strikes your fancy because they know the area well. +Comfortable, clean, bright, air conditioned, beautiful accommodations. +Breakfast? Don't get me started. Gourmet, fresh, home made and different every day. EVEN for me - gluten, dairy, egg, sugar and meat free me! Deborah goes out of her way to cater to everyone's allergy or dietary needs, including having soy milk, almond milk and gluten free options. +home-baked treats set out every afternoon (into the night) for snacking along with wide assortment of teas, and lots of packaged treats (chips, cookies, raisins) as well. +home baked GLUTEN FREE TREATS too. +piano in the sitting room (too bad those lessons Mom paid for never took) which anyone with the skill to do so is welcome to play. +free off-street parking +walking distance to the port/shopping/entertainment/restaurants +free wifi +mini-fridge outside our door - comes in handy for those yummy leftovers (see below) I got the impression Deborah and Buddy feel it's still a work in progress but we were impressed with how lovely and homey it was. Cons: -Well, maybe we're just not used to sleeping on coil-spring mattresses, and maybe I've lived in earthquake country too long but... the first night, I woke up around 2 or 3 am thinking we were having an earthquake. It was just my mattress-mate shifting a little but the sensitivity of the bed to motion became a running joke between us. One's slightest motion was easily felt by the other. -Noise. Again, maybe it's me. It's been years since I lived in NYC or near a heavily traveled road but the street noise (Harleys, for ex.) and the bar/music venue on the next corner made for raucousness. We just let the bathroom fan run all night to help drown it out. Small price to pay imo. Hey, we slept fine, ate even better, and paid half what the rest of the wedding party did down at the big hotel at the port, especially when you consider the daily parking fees at those places! Bonus factors: Green Elephant!!! Great Thai-inspired food, all vegan/sustainable and even my omnivore companions ended up wanting to go there twice in 5 days. Local 188!!! Great Spanish food and wine. Seafood paella (share with 3!) Boda!!! Thai (I think owned by same folks who own Green Elephant?). Great small plates - this place has meat and fish too - along with cocktails & wine. All within 2-5 minute walk on Congress St., as are a good indie coffee shop and plenty of other food options.

I rented the whole inn for my wedding weekend in August and had several aunts and uncles and family friends stay there. They all told me numerous times how much they enjoyed staying there, the rooms were beautiful and the food was delicious, and the inn is in a great location that's walkable to great restaurants and down to the Old Port. Deborah was incredibly sweet and helpful as we had to shuffle around which rooms people stayed in, which we really appreciated. All in all, it worked out very well for my group to stay there, and I would highly recommend it for others looking for wedding accommodations or just a nice weekend in Portland!

John the innkeeper is one of the best things about this place. Our room the Murphy has kind of a low ceiling and was closer to a 3 star rating. It was clean and quiet, although claustrophobic. John was helpful in choosing a restaurant and telling us about Portland. The breakfast was good. Location within walking distance of the old port.

This is a beautiful little B&B in the heart of Portland. We stayed in the Spring Room for a long weekend. It's a beautiful, spacious room with a surprisingly large bathroom (especially for these old buildings), and it gets a great amount of light. Keep in mind the inn is in the middle of everything, so expect the sound of cars mixed in with the seagulls. It didn't disturb me at all. The location is perfect - a very short walk to all the action, and right around the corner from the art museum (which I recommend visiting). The breakfast was incredible. The first morning was especially good - we started with pineapple and blackberries, and then were served croissants and delicious little "bacon cups" filled with finely chopped mushrooms and egg. SO good. You eat breakfast in a dining area with two tables, encouraging conversation with your fellow guests. The employees are incredibly friendly and helpful. They are full of suggestions and come readily equipped with a map. Their suggestions did not lead us astray. Overall, it was a great stay. We'll definitely stay there again, especially since the prices were pretty competitive when looking at what other places charge. And more than anything, go visit Portland! It is a really cool town. :)

  • Stephanie D.

We stayed in the Courtyard room which has its own patio, entry and bath. It's a nice, clean, reasonably priced B&B just a short walk from all the action in of Portland. John was super friendly and made the guests feel very welcome plus introduced us to each other. Breakfast made by Nancy was top notch - it really is better than other B&B breakfasts. There is reserved parking in this very busy part of town, but it is a couple doors down around the way. It was fine, but I make this comment because of another post that there was no parking. Plus, when we checked out, John let us keep our car there while we roamed around town on foot a bit more before our flight which was perfect since there was a festival that day and parking was full and traffic jammed.

I should have written this review right away but the experience was so jarring, I've been avoiding having to relive it. My boyfriend and I stayed at the Inn at Park Springs for two nights last fall. It was my first bed & breakfast experience and it nearly scared me away from them for good. We drove up from Boston and on our way, realized that the place we wanted to have dinner was actually on our way to Portland. Stopping would have us arriving after the designated check-in period, so I called John to ask if he would prefer we come straight to the B&B (meaning making it within the check-in period) or if we could come later on. He was immediately short with me and said he preferred later, without specifying exactly when. When we arrived at the Inn at 8 (he told us to come "much later" so we thought this was a safe bet), my boyfriend dropped me off so he could find parking and I buzzed the front door. No one answered but there were lights on inside so I thought John was just in back. The instructions on the door said to call to be let in and gave a number, so I called. When John answered, I said hi, said who I was, and asked to be let in. John very rudely told me he was on his way back to the B&B and to be patient. When he arrived, I stood up, smiling, to shake his hand, assuming the irritation I perceived on the phone was just in my head. It was not. As we walked in the front door, I asked if there was any specific place to park because my boyfriend was still driving around, unable to find anything. That's when John turned on me. He started yelling at me (yes, YELLING) about being demanding and impatient and disrespectful. He accused me of acting like he had nothing better to do than wait around for me, and then sarcastically asked if I wanted to stay there or not, because he has no problem filling rooms and doesn't need this. Meanwhile, I said nothing. I stood there, cowering away from him, beet red, on the verge of tears, in complete shock. In all my life, I have NEVER been spoken to like that. When my boyfriend came in and we walked up to our room, he saw how shook up I was and when I told him what had happened, he went downstairs to talk to John. Instead of apologizing, John actually tried to get my boyfriend to see why his behavior was justified. In fact, all that evening and into the morning, John refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing. When he finally did, it was to make excuses about him being under a lot of stress because his wife was injured and he had to take care of everything on his own. He then tried to be extra nice to me and even put a complimentary bottle of wine in our room. While I appreciated the effort and while I tried to let it go and make the best of my time in Portland, the rest of our visit was clouded by that experience. And our otherwise amazing vacation to the east coast will forever be tainted. I'm not writing this review to be mean or to get back at John. I'm writing it because John's behavior had a profound effect on me and others looking to stay at this B&B have a right to know because at an establishment like this, it is all about the staff. I see many recent reviews that say John is wonderful and I sincerely hope he turned over a new leaf after our stay. When you are in a service industry, you don't get to take out your stress on your customers. And no one should ever receive such horrible treatment, especially based on a few snap judgements that couldn't have been further from the truth. Luckily, we stayed at a wonderful B&B in New Hampshire right after this experience and actually made friends with and hung out with the staff, so I will likely give B&B's a chance in the future.

My husband and I stayed here at the beginning of our coastal tour of Maine for two nights. We arrived in mid-afternoon and checked in with no problem. We were met by John, the lovely innkeeper, and a big map - he was more than happy to chat about Portland restaurants, lighthouses and neighborhoods. We stayed in the Spring Room, which was a rather large room for the house its age. We had a comfortable bed, and a small seating area that was well lit by the east and south facing windows. While the room was nicely decorated, the bathroom (which you strangely had to step up into, probably has to do with the plumbing) was decorated in some seriously hideous floral wallpaper that had to have been leftover from the 1980s. Not a big deal, just not our taste, but very much in the style of a traditional bed and breakfast. We slept with the windows open both nights, happy to be somewhere cool, but the window a/c unit would have been more than adequate if needed. And, yes, there was no TV in the room - how refreshing! Know that the room does face a semi-busy intersection and that there is a hospital nearby, so if you're a light sleeper, cars and sirens may bother you (I'm a light sleeper, but we live in an urban area, so they didn't bother me here). Breakfast was good both mornings, less healthy than what we usually eat at home (one morning was a croque madame, one morning another fried egg dish, both mornings started with fruit). In true bed and breakfast style, everyone is served the same thing. Coffee was good and hot and my husband enjoyed the mini-muffins which seemed to always be available. We enjoyed chatting with the other guests - who varied widely by age - and John, who often mingled throughout breakfast. Overall, it was a very comfortable place to stay for our first two nights in Maine. The inn is definitely not in the Old Port, but I found it lovely to be in a residential neighborhood and the walk to the commercial area wasn't too bad. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if we were in Portland!

Stayed in a room on the 3rd floor I call "the crow's nest". I forget the name they gave it. Nice place and a good breakfast. They neglected to put soap or shampoo in the room but I arrived quite late and was just too tired to make the trip downstairs again. Fortunately I had my own soap. Very good location and for one night it was quite comfortable. Enjoyed the chocolates in the sitting room. I would have traded them for some soap and shampoo however. Wireless did not work in the crows nest.

This is a pretty bed and breakfast. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated. The location is great - about 10 minute walk from the main drag. The breakfast was tasty the next day. Oh, and the toiletries in the bathroom smelled terrific! The price isn't terrible, but isn't great either. While I enjoyed my stay, I would probably try a different B&B if I travelled to Portland again for variety.

This was a lovely place to stay. My mom and I shared the room with two beds. It was quiet in the back of the house. I slept in the cozy single sleeping nook but no one taller than 5'6" could sleep there. Nice breakfast. John is a very friendly host.

My husband and I stayed here one night mid-week, and loved the very comfortable, "Museum Room." Our host, John, was extremely pleasant and made sure we had everything we needed. In fact, he upgraded us to a nicer room from the one we booked (at no extra charge) because the Inn was not full. The breakfast was hot and delicious, and they even made sure to leave out all dairy from mine (dietary restriction). Would definitely stay here if we visit Portland again; the location is very good and within a comfortable walking distance of the Old Port area.

I've stayed at Park Spring twice with my husband (we're a gay couple, for what that's worth). Very fine inn within easy walking distance to Old Port area of Portland. John, the innkeeper, is extremely nice.

We stayed two nights at the Inn at Park Spring and found it to be very clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. The hosts were very friendly and helpful and breakfasts wonderful. The location is within a decent walk to the Old Port area or a very short drive. It is actually right around the corner from the Portland Art museum which was very handy. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a comfortable B&B in the heart of Portland.
