Best sandwich I've ever had, if you're in Portland it is a no brainier, fresh rolls daily, everything is made in house, don't miss out on this place. Prices are cheap for the quality food you will receive, it is very obvious that the owner cares about the food he serves and does not compromise his very high standards

Not a 5 star, more like 2 stars for $8 sandwich. Overall service and atmosphere was good and is why I give Fit to Eat a total score of 3 starts

This place is OMGood! The owner is very pleasant and makes sure you are happy. They were out of an ingredient to make the sandwich I wanted and the owner suggested one that was better than what I had wanted. Amazing place.

Love this place for lunch. Bread is amazing. The focaccia is unbelievable. Always a good veggie option. My two favorites are the Old Port and the pastrami. I hope the owner opens up a pizza place, as he's talked about. He comes from a little pizza shop outside of Hartford, CT called "Little City Pizza" that has the best pie I've ever had.

Good food and nice staff. We enjoyed our lunch in this funky little restaurant tucked away off the beaten path. They are very flexible and will modify their sandwiches if you ask. I recommend this place.

Good, fresh salad and sandwiches. The Santa Fe has great flavor - the banana peppers make this sandwich. Good atmosphere with local art proudly displayed, and good music while you wait for your food.

The food here is great, and so is the service. I would honestly give this place 5 stars if it wasn't for one kind of important issue...I used to LOVE coming here for lunch, but every time I leave, I smell like a greasy bacon campfire. If the ventilation issue was fixed, I would come here a lot more. I have stopped going because of the smell. I can't go into an afternoon of meetings smelling like a poorly ventilated grill. Every sandwich and salad I've had here is fantastic, and well priced. Especially the Macintuscan and Cobb salad.

There is nothing fancy about this lunch place, but I'm telling you had a such a terrific time here. SSS - Sandwiches that were terrific. Super Stephen who prepared something special for me for my birthday with hummus, spinach, portobello mushroom, provolone, pesto, tomato, and cucumber on a GREAT roll, heated to perfection. And the last "S", I would never had expected the best of Sinatra playing in the background, but the timeless music made everyone in the restaurant happy (most patrons were probably born after Sinatra died). It was just great. Stephen is terrific and in a city that is loaded with great restaurants, this one is stellar.

Had a great spring time lunch at Fit to Eat! Was in Old Port with family and used YELP to help me find a great eatery. Fit to Eat had good reviews so we gave it a try. We were NOT disappointed. Great selection, friendly and helpful staff, and fresh ingredients. Unique sandwich combinations that simply work! Great lunch.

Been here a few times now and the sandwiches and soups are always great. The sandwiches are a bit on the smaller side and are messy to eat but they sure are tasty. Slightly more expensive than other Old Port sandwich shops but most if not all of the stuff is homeade from the bread to the dressings to the soups so you get what you pay for. I hope this place stays around for a long time to come.

OMG! This place has the most amazing tuna sandwich. Everything else is great too if they're out of tuna

Read a really good review on yelp so we thought we would give it a try. I ordered a roast beef sandwich on a foccacia bread. Sandwich included (slightly browned) avocado, pcs of romaine lettuce, a couple pcs. (NOT slices) of tomato, a slice of cheese, about 1/4 cup of mayo. Oh and 1slice of roast beef. It was the sloppiest sandwich I ever ate.. Everything fell out when I took a bite because it had so Much mayo. The only good thing about this sandwich was the bread. I would give this place 1/2 point if that.

I was really excited to try Fit To Eat as some of the pictures and reviews seemed promising. With that said, my first time there will most likely be my last. My boyfriend ordered a hotdog and I ordered the Tuna sandwich (which sounded awesome). We waited 15 minutes JUST for the hotdog to be done. The hotdog was wrapped in a tortilla and wasn't anything special. I waited an additional 10 minutes for my tuna sandwich (that I believe was given to another customer that ordered after me). I actually stood around for a good five minutes until an employee asked what was wrong. By the time I got my food, my boyfriend was already done eating. The sandwich was okay, until is found a hair in it. Pretty disappointed, I will find a different sandwich shop.

The only reason it's not five stars is time. My sandwhich was a turkey BLT with pesto was amazing! So delicious and I loved that you can choose the bread you want. Would love to back here if it didn't take so long to make. The place had one girl (super sweet) working and basically doing everything which slowed her down a bit. Other than that it was an awesome place to eat.

I wish we had gone to duckfat. I never eat sandwiches. Ever, but girls weekend figured I'd splurge on one. Sign said fresh bread and people on here said the focaccia was delicious, so brought my sisters here. We got Grecian, Fredge, and a special of the day Grilled cheese. I really hope the owner reads this because it was so bad it was comical. The Grecian had no hummus, so it was kinda dry and inside was cold, bread way to hard (And I know good focaccia, and this is not it). The Fredge was made ok, but barely any cheese. The grilled cheese was made completely wrong. She asked to replace hot sauce with the mayo. Came smothered in hot sauce, so I gave her half my sandwich since it takes quite a while to get a sandwich. (20 min or so with 1 person in front of you). When I bit into her grilled cheese the cheese was cold, hard and unmelted. What? I also ordered the California at first, but was warned that takes a long time to make. They also told another person that as well. Another funny. The young man who was bringing out sandwiches, dropped one on the table in front of a guest and slapped it back on the plate and put it in front of them. I can't only guess if they were either high, or new or both :) This was on Saturday 4/25 around 2-2:30 in case you'd like to give them some tips on melting cheese.

Sparse little room where you order at the counter and they bring you your food. Sandwich was OK, soup was not quite right, and salad was small and basic. Pricey for what you get. Overall a disappointing experience.

We never would have seen this place had we not taken a short cut walking down Market St. I think they need to think about a little better signage or a sandwich board on the sidewalk to direct people's attention to their location. We were looking for a good lunch spot and their featuring of wraps and salads with local ingredients got our attention. We were there on a Sunday at lunch and got a nice window seat looking down Market St. The staff was very good and prompt with our order. I'd highly recommend this as your next lunch stop if you are in the old port and looking for something healthy and fun.

The best sandwiches we ever ate. Soups are to die for and freshly made bread filling the shop with a wonderful aroma. The staff was so happy they made my day. I'll definitely be a regular at my new favorite sandwich shop.

This place was good, but not the best sandwich place I have ever been to. The second floor setting is pretty cool and the menu is great. I got the California sandwich (ironic since I am from California) and I got it in a wrap instead of on bread. The wrap was a great choice and the employee at the counter suggested it. The sandwich was tasty. It did take quite a while for us to actually get our food though. We actually had to leave and put more money in our parking meter as a result. But overall, I would recommend this place to a friend.

Stopped here because I wanted a sandwich for lunch and I was blown away! I had been craving tuna fish for a few days, so I was excited to give their tuna sandwich a try. I was skeptical because the menu listed that there were banana peppers on the sandwich (along with cheddar, romaine, and tomato).. But they chop them up and mix them with the tuna, so you don't really have a choice. However, the staff assured me I wouldn't be disappointed or put off by the peppers - and I am so glad I listened! This was the BEST sandwich I have had hands down! I had it on the fresh focaccia, which adds a little garlic kick and is AMAZING. My sister had the Mactuscan - which is essentially a "Vermonter" with turkey, bacon, cheddar, romaine, and honey mustard on freshly made Tuscan bread. She loved hers as well. Both the sandwiches came with unsalted sunflower seeds (which I thought was unique and yummy). Great and friendly service. Great location right in the middle of the Old Port overlooking Market Street and the ocean!

Great sandwiches! Super fresh food, tasty, and had Gluten Free option for bread, nice. The place was a little less than sparkling clean, though...

Hate to say it but this place was nothing out of the ordinary. I had their portabello sandwich and it was tasty but nothing special. And it was definitely on the small side. Not much of a drink selection.

This was the only YELP restaurant that we didn't enjoy. We look up yelp whenever we travel and this one was a disappointment. The food wasn't that great and the place was filthy. It's a funky little joint but was very put off on how dirty the restaurant was.

  • Melissa M.

I came in pretty near closing time, but still got out quickly. I had the "California" which was delicious. Salmon and lots of fresh veggies, and a really large portion. The bread was excellent, too.

What rude customer service! I've been here several times but I'm afraid I won't be going back any time soon. Their food is okay but what really gets me is the wait. There are several staff members but everyone seems to be sitting around doing little to nothing. Save yourself the wait and enjoy one of the many other sandwich shops around.

This place was great and the boys at the counter seemed very nice. With the $10 for 20 check in deal, we got 2 sandwiches (Macintuscan and pesto) plus a coconut water and a seltzer water. The bread was fresh the turkey and chicken were oven roasted and fresh carved, and both sandwiches had lots of fresh veggies. The bacon in the Macintuscan was nice and thick and not too salty. One thing to know, though not skimpy on meat, the sandwiches are on the smaller side. For me it was perfect, for my husband a little small. The only thing I didn't like was the weird music playing, Anyways, keep up the good work!

I stopped by Fit to Eat during an impromptu trip to Portland over Memorial Day weekend. Although I had just hoped for a quick bite to eat before heading to my hotel, I was rewarded with some of the best food and service experienced during our visit. First, Fit to Eat uses locally sourced food and makes most of what they sell from scratch - mayo, bread, etc. - which is very apparent from the taste and quality of their food. Second, the restaurant has a unique, interesting, and different menu - don't expect typical fare like Italian, meatball, and steak and cheese subs. I had the "Grecian" which had heaping portions of chicken breast, spinach, feta, and humus on a fresh Tuscan-style roll; my fiancé had a beautiful salmon sandwich on fresh ciabatta that looked delicious. Third, and how I learned all about my first point, the owner of Fit to Eat is a young guy named Mike who is extremely friendly and is very passionate about selling high quality food. Mike's food is wonderfully fresh and, although I was very full after my meal, I did not feel lethargic or bloated like I would have if I'd eaten one of those generic white flour bulky rolls stuffed with processed cold cuts. I really think the fresh bread and the homemade ingredients make all the difference. Fit to Eat also had some interesting soups and salads on the menu, but we didn't have a chance to try those - definitely on the next trip. Finally, this is not a pretentious, "uber Whole Foods" place with $14 sandwiches - the prices are very reasonable and the vibe is very friendly and welcoming. Check it out!

This place is awesome. The sandwiches are absolutely delicious. I had the chicken salad on focaccia bread pressed (check out the pic I posted). Cool atmosphere. This place is upstairs so they have nice views looking down on the streets and surrounding area. Definitely recommend for lunch or just grabbing a sandwich.

I rarely write reviews but was compelled to after my horrible experience today. My friend and I ordered the Cobb salad and the Chef salad. After paying we were told they were out of hard boiled eggs and asked to pick a substitute-ok, kind of poor planning on their part but not a huge deal. Then, I had asked for vinaigrette dressing instead of honey mustard but received the honey mustard anyway. When I asked for the vinaigrette instead, the worker in the back accused me of being "picky". Ok, laughed it off. But the final straw was when I asked for a bag for the salads and was handed one that didn't look like it would fit both of them so I commented that I wasn't sure they would fit and the guy behind the counter put the salads in and actually said "Looks like they fit! It's a fucking miracle!" I was shocked, needless to say. The food was average but due to the rude service I definitely won't come back here again. There are better opportunities in the Portland area.

I've had fit to eat bookmarked for a while now given my fondness for a great sandwich. I managed to pop in for lunch while in town recently running some errands. The place was empty around 2pm, granted it was a cold rainy day in the Old Port. I ordered the pesto chicken on focaccia. I was a bit surprised given all the rave reviews about this place by how average I found my sandwich to be. Everything from the bread to the taste was ok but not particularly exciting or great in anyway. Portions were not particularly large either, and that's ok but I wanted to make note of it. I might give this place another try at some point to see if I just caught them on an off day, but not planning to put this spot into my regular rotation go to spots.

I like the food a lot. Service is good. However I can't in good faith recommend a place that serves food in plastic throw-away containers even when you're eating there. Plastic utensils too. A non-sustainable business model will not get my endorsement which is unfortunate as they've got everything else going for them.

If your looking for a quick but tasty sandwich, look no further than Fit to Eat. I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich on focaccia bread and it was stuffed full of fresh vegetables. For the size of the sandwich price is right.

I've been here a few times for lunch. I am a hopeless explorer of sandwiches and cookies everywhere. Thankfully I found FIT to EAT which has both great sandwiches and great cookies. My favorite sandwiches include the Pesto, California and BLT. They have local art, friendly staff and a nice view of Old Port and the bay. I am a #fittoeater.

"Best sandwich I've ever had!"-my mom The food is so good, so fresh and Stephen from Boston was so awesome to us! A really amazing experience! For sure a repeat for our next Portland visit.

We ordered the pastrami and the California sandwiches on faccacio. The pastrami was light on the pastrami ( one slice) and heavy on the sauce (dripping/soggy). The California was salmon overloaded with sauce too. It would have been better if it were lox. They have a large selection of bottled drinks and an few potato chip styles to choose from (sold separately). One type of cookie (chocolate chip) was available. We really didn't understand the raving reviews because this place was very average. The restrooms were creepy being among a maze of storage rooms and in slight disrepair.

If you are looking for a quick lunch with amazing taste this is the place to go. When I first moved to Portland I heard great things about this sandwich place and decided to try it out. Its safe to say It has become my "go to" place for lunch in the old port. I HIGHLY recommend the Fredge on tuscan, the vegetarian option. It has a perfect combination of flavors and is quite honestly my favorite sandwich. The grecian is also a good option (without chicken for vegetarians). I highly recommend stopping in to experience the fun atmosphere and amazing food. Also try the infused waters, who knew that apple infused water could be so addictive? Trust me you wont be disappointed!

The chicken pesto sandwich with sun-dried tomatoes on focaccia is my sammy of choice at Fit to Eat. It. Is. Lovely. It has just the right balance of textures and flavors. My only criticism is that I wish there was more of it, though maybe I'm just a glutton. I enjoy sitting near the windows and looking down onto the street below. If you get your timing right it's a decent perch for people watching. Speaking of timing, it can get pretty busy in there, and seating is limited, which can be a problem. Overall a solid lunch/sandwich spot in Old Port.

Great sandwiches. Lots of creativity and fresh bread/ingredients. Talbot and Old Port are very tasty!

Usually gluten free bread is so-so, meh, a bummer, and sad. The GF bread here is surprisingly, nay, shockingly delicious. It doesn't pretend to be bread, nor does it adhere to the bread standards of flaky or fluffy; it's a whole new GF wrap world up those two flights of stairs and I highly recommend you try it, Jasmine.

Enjoyed a Monday lunch here. The Salmon on wheat wrap was fresh and very good. Having it grilled panini-style was a nice touch. My husband had the Old Port which we were told is a customer favorite. The roast beef was tender and delicious. Both sandwiches could have used a touch more seasoning but the flavors of freshness did stand out. We sat outside at some bistro tables which was perfect for this nice day. Seating inside was limited (read all taken) and most tables for 4 had one or two diners. Creating more options for seating might be helpful. Will definitely recommend this cute place though!

Each time I eat here I leave thinking I've just eaten the best sandwich I've ever had. Every sandwich is unique and delicious, especially when made with their focaccia bread. You will be greeted with great, friendly service, a clean dining area, and a bright yet funky atmosphere. I love the Santa Fe and The Macintuscan right down to the pickle on the side. Can't wait to try them all.

This place was suggested to us by our tour guide from the trolley tour. He was right on the money. The sandwiches were very fresh, healthy, and delicious. The service was friendly and the prices were very reasonable. There is no small side of pasta salad or coleslaw so you can grab a bag of chips. If they presented that option it might take them to a different level. This place does well according to the reviews and based upon what we saw. We would go back if we lived in the area.

If someone ordered take-out and just handed me the sandwich I ordered, "The Sante Fe", I'd definitely have to give it 3 STARS. The portion size wasn't great for the price, and it lacked a little bit of chicken. The ingredients and the bread saved the sandwich. So why did I give it 4 stars? This place had fresh ingredients, fresh baked bread, cool atmosphere, wicked nice people working, and some cool menu options (breakfast, salads, sandwiches). I look forward to trying it again

Love this cozy deli for breakfast or lunch. The ingredients are serious! They make their own amazing breads, the bacon is double thick , and the service is so nice.

I went here with someone to use a coupon we had purchased though yelp. The staff was very polite and the place was clean and nice. I got the lobster roll, which I enjoyed, but I don't really know enough about lobster rolls to say if it was a great lobster roll. I liked it. My friend got the BLT and said it was very good as well. Definitely worth stopping in!

Decided to try this out after reading the reviews and, I'm glad I did. Very pleasing inside and the food and the service were excellent! My daughter had the turkey and I had the Talbot. They were served on there own bread which just added to the sandwich.
