After a long week in the hospital with our 11 year old, my husband an I needed a break out alone. I personally needed a glass of wine, and maybe a little music. So I typed in "Portland Maine Happy Hour places on a Saturday night" which brought up a great deal of wonderful options. Bonfire caught my eye for a few reasons. FREE BACON #1, the menu was completely appealing, FREE BACON, and $3.00 glasses of wine, FREE BACON! I wasn't picky with the wine, just wanted wine (it was a long week), FREE BACON! Now, my hubby HATES to go into the Old Port because it is WRETCHED to park, but I LOVE the restaurants there so he grudgingly obliged.' Feeling like I had won, we walked in the door rather shocked at what we saw. A very small space with a huge bar in the middle, NO SMELL OF BACON, hanging swing tires, saddle chairs, rather loud and quite crowded, a complete bar scene. I was ready to walk out until hubby high on his 'I told you so' horse reminded me this is where I wanted to go. I hate it when he is right!!!!! :/ We sat down, and it took a bit for us to order because we were taking in the view. My $3.00 glass of red wine came, which I was able to choose from like 5 options, WHAT??? I sipped and looked at the like 2 million televisions in this place, and realized that they were playing country music, but that the tv's were playing the music videos to each song that was playing! (no commercials) How cool is that? Oh and for you sports fans, yep, a few of the tv's had those one as well! Each table has a usb plug in for all of you cellphone junkies, so you can YELP there. The waitstaff is rather ridiculously gorgeous, and the food........ Yep the food is pretty great. FREE BACON......... Ok yes, free bacon during happy hour 4-7 (an hour longer than most places) but my bacon grilled cheese rocked, and the burger my husband ordered was AMAZING. Maybe not as epic as Don's Lunch in Westbrook, BUT these patties are hand made, and FRESH, taste from the grill. So YES, it was a wicked shock walking in from what we expected from their website, NOT the best place for kids after 5:00, but a really fun place to bring them before then. NOT a romantic place, but hell, we had a great damn time, great food, great staff, and it took our mind off of the previous week. AND the price is right, my god, for the old port the most expensive thing on the menu is $10.00 bucks, and NOT small portions. GOOD STUFF! YeeeeHaw.............................. One small note I thought rocked: Roulette Wings, I thought Buffalo Wings, yes BUT the roulette part, 5 out of 6 wings are the way you asked spice wise, but 1 is dangerously hot, hence the Roulette part. FUN! Also, drinks are served in red solo cups.... Red Solo Cup, I fill you up, let's have a party..... Oh god, so sorry!

I'm not the biggest fan of country music. When a gang of inebriated friends and I made our way to Bonfire, I was less than thrilled. My apprehension quickly dissolved and I actually found myself having a great time here. The establishment has pretty smart touches like: swings and tire swings that hang from the ceiling, Wooden restroom doors that slide open and shut and a southern themed drink menu. The special that night was $4 shots of the house whiskey, which is a blend that has a sweet and spiced finish. The shots were reasonably priced for OP. The place got packed as the night went on, making it difficult to move, which is eventually why headed home. Regardless I very much liked this place and didn't mind the country music as much as I though I would. Also, why does every country themed bar turn in to a scene from Coyote Ugly? Not that I'm complaining....

I've never been here for dinner but I absolutely love this place as a bar. We had so much fun with the tire swings and they have a good variety of beers and shots. Great country music and fun people. We always a have a good time here! :)

If you're looking for a great happy hour in Portland, you found it!! It's a country themed bar off the beaten path a bit that is worth discovering. $2 beers, $1 tacos, $3 burgers, $2 fries and free bacon. Came here before a Portland Pirates hockey game and it was a great start to the night. Can't go wrong with the happy hour prices, but everything on the menu is very reasonable at the regular price too. Another kicker for this place is that they give you maple syrup for the bacon. This place caters to true Americans, people looking for cheap beer and food and a great time. They should put an American Flag out front!

Nice country bar. The bar stools are tractor seats. They also had a table with porch swings for seats. 11 flat screens to make for a good place to watch sports. They had several craft beers to choose from. They also had a self service draft wall where you swipe a preloaded card to pour your beer. Must be great when the bar is busy. All drinks are served in red solo cups. We happened to be there for the bacon happy hour. That's awesome.

No food/drink establishment should have a dog wandering around behind the bar licking buckets of bused plates and bartender hands. Red solo cups, heavy on the tonic, missing the gin. Patrons were cougars in tight lace. Bartenders essentially jailbait. Ew.

Bonfire is proof that there are bad restaurants in Portland. Stopped by here mid-afternoon on Saturday 11/15 in reasonable expectation of a fun afternoon. Disappointed to say the least. All I have to say is: please respect the integrity of the Portland restaurant scene. Service, quality and atmosphere all matter. In my experience, your establishment offers none of these. Rose

Randomly popped into this place last night. A fun and busy atmosphere. The drinks were strong. Didn't get a chance to check out the food, but the place was clean and entertaining. They definitely have no shortage of good looking staff! Which is a plus when you are enjoying a few drinks...the encouragement for more is definitely there! Will go here again!

Great place to go. It was very active when I was there on Saturday night. I came there late and was a line to get in, but that is when the city comes alive. Great fun I had with my friends. Will be back during the week for their 'Bacon Happier Hour' with some co-workers

Fun,casual bar. Friendly bar and wait staff in a typical country bar setting. Repurposed items mixed with porch and tire swings, tractor and saddle bar stools, and numerous big screen televisions. It was calm in the afternoon, but I can see where this place would get pretty rowdy in the evenings or on game day.

One of my favorite bars in Portland now!! Great music, cool atmosphere, reasonable drink prices and varieties. The seating is awesome, but they are lacking stools around the bar area. They even have bacon happy hour with great deals on drinks and $3 burgers.

Stopped in for a mimosa and ended up in a swinging chair. It was early afternoon when I went in, so I can't attest to the ambience per se. That being said, it seemed like a fun place for those who like the country music thang.

Seemed like a great place with a cool concept.. That being said, they have a lot of work to do until they get it right. On a Thursday night they had one waitress at the dinner hour... The food we ordered came from down the street prepared at another restaurant, and the burgers we ordered tasted like they came from a high school cafeteria. Do not waste your time at this place with so many other awesome places in the city. The only reason I gave two stars was because our waitress was nice..

I was very excited when I heard about Bonfire and couldn't wait to try it out. I lived in Houston for 3 years and traveled and partied around the whole state of Texas, so the idea of a country bar in Portland sounded great. I went with some friends last Saturday to check it out. The hostess was great, very friendly. She told us all about the bar and what we could expect. We were there during happy hour, so we heard about the free bacon, $2 beers, $1 whiskey shots. Sounded great. Our waitress came to the table and things went downhill in a hurry. She asked if we wanted some bacon. Yes please! She took our drink order, 2 beers, 2 mixed drinks. 1 mixed drink came to the table, then 1 beer came to the table. She then brought my beer. I had ordered Shiner Bock a beer I drank a lot in Texas. The beer she brought looked like a Bud Light, I said, you made a mistake this isn't Shiner Bock. She insisted that it was, that she had been serving it all day. I insisted that it was not. She took the beer away. No bacon yet, no second mixed drink yet. She returned with the beer and said, you are right we ran out of Shiner Bock, this is a Brooklyn Lager, do you still want it? I took it because I was thirsty as hell and by now we had been there for 20+ minutes. Imagine my surprise when the beer wasn't a Brooklyn Ale, but the same beer my buddy was drinking. Still no bacon and no mixed drink. At that point she disappeared for the next 15 minutes. When she returned , she acted like we were a new table! " hi guys how are you doing today". We asked for the checks. My check should have been 2 dollars, because all we received was 1 beer. We never got the mixed drink, or bacon! My bill was 20 dollars! I insisted there must be a mistake and she took the bill back. After waiting for 10 more minutes, I put a five on the table and left. They never charged my card so I don't know how they handled it. What a mess! She may have been cute, but obviously untrained. Besides the waitress outfits, no country bar vibe at all. Just another dive bar.

So we happened upon this place. The road you walk down reminded me of paver/cobblestone roads in Europe and we saw friends we met on a beer tour so we stopped and had a drink and dollar tacos - just wanting to be outside on a gorgeous night. I mean how do you complain over $1 taco? -- but I will. The meat was incredibly dry and unseasoned. Sadly the best part was the sour cream. Then when it came time for the checks our poor waitress swapped the bills between us and our friends. Rather than deal with the headache over the additional $8 on ours I offered to pay and go. Our beer tour friends insisted they pay their share so we tried to rectify it. Then new checks came out - wrong again. So I offered to go inside and fix it. The poor girl had 15 tables by herself and in a situation like this when many patrons could be an A$$ I felt sorry for her. So while we worked to explain the issues she called her manager over who had the customer service skills and patience of an amoeba. When I tried to explain he cut me off -- reissued checks and it was still wrong. Then tried to lecture me on why I didn't need the voided receipts (three of them to boot). He slowly started to come around when he realized we weren't nuts but the whole experience was blah. Perhaps it's a cool country bar - but nothing about it said - I would come back. Not the $1 dry tacos and not the potential of dealing with the manager.

Decent atmosphere. Terrible food. We ordered smoked wings and the mac n cheese balls. Both were bland and the wings were pale and unappetizing. They were marginally better after adding barbecue sauce. The interior is pretty cool and the vibe is fun. We sat in swing chairs, so that made up for the quality of the food. Seriously, just drink here. It is a country bar, so don't come if you can't at least tolerate country music.

Normally I love this bar. Tonight my friend and I were given a really hard time trying to get in to the bar. This was at 9:40 at night. I am 27 and my friend is 24, the bouncer stared at my ID for 2 minutes then just handed it to me and didn't say a word other than saying it didn't look like a real Id. He then proceeded to not let my friend in until he had someone else check it. After 5 minutes of waiting for someone to come check it the bouncer said "I don't know what I'm doing go in" to my friend. Not sure why this person was allowed to work the door but he really made me second guess my choice in where I go.

A few friends and I have come to Bonfire a couple of times now for happy hour and have loved it. The specials are great and free BACON, whats not to love. Service has been wonderful and the atmosphere is pretty cool!

Walking around the back alleys of Portland, we stumbled on the Bonfire. Super cool place. Beer selection is good, staff is awesome and decor is great. Saddle up and listen to good tunes and relax, country style!

My favorite bar in Portland. Loud country music, flat screens that play the country music videos, you can poor your own beer in a red solo cup, good environment, good bar setup - just a really good vibe.

Portland finally gets a country bar, and it's actually really decent. Bonfire has been open a week and is already one of the most popular bars among the Fore/Wharf Street crowd. It's a fat middle finger to the trendy, expensive lounges that have invaded Portland in the past few years. There's lots of good here. I hate 51 Wharf, and it's the same owner, but they did their homework for this. The decor/vibe is straight country but strictly faux divey. It's a nice looking bar. The 15 or so large screen tvs make this a great place to watch a game. Country music (along with some stadium rock anthems?) blare from the speakers. The playlist needs to expand a bit, but it's all of the favorites. They did a tremendous job hiring attractive bartenders who are also friendly and personable. Just in case, Bonfire is one of the first Maine bars to have a "wall of beer" where you can pour your own beer using prepaid cards. Considering the full house on weekends, this could be useful. Most drinks are served in solo cups and the beer list is expansive. Prices are great and the happy hour is one of the best around. From 4-7 every day whiskey and tacos are $1, certain beers are $2 and burgers and wine are $3. The burger won't be putting Five Guys out of business, but was fine. The food menu is typical southern pub fare and is decent and cheap. Hilariously, all food comes out on trays covered with a lid, like it's Jean Georges. The thoughtful touches really stand out. The bar is lined with outlets and USB plugs to charge a phone. Some of the seating is literally saddles and hammocks, which is awesome. Bacon is free and delicious. I can't emphasize enough...service is amazing. There are some annoyances like having to leave a credit card or license to order food (or so I was told when ordering, but it sounds false) and the kitchen is at 51 Wharf. When it's busy it would be really easy for food orders to be forgotten, mixed up or take a long wait. Also, $13 cocktails with a souvenir cup is perfect for Key West but just a poor idea here. Luckily you can always just order standard, cheaper mixed drinks in the solo cups. From all appearances Bonfire is going to be a roaring success. It's an attractive "dive" country bar with great service, music, and a ton of TVs. It's a great addition to the downtown bar scene.

What a cool twist for downtown Portland! I liked the concept; country night out. The bathrooms have epic sliding wooden barn doors with metal bucket sinks, there's a swinging bench that hangs from the ceiling, and there's literally 100 flat-screens inside. Everything comes in a red solo cup, even the shots come in itty bitty ones. The staff were in cute country outfits and very friendly. This place has a lot of potential, honestly my only gripe is that it's sooo small. It got crowded and hot really quickly on a Saturday night. If something bigger opens up they should definitely take it, in the mean time though it's still a fun spot to check out and is a cool addition to the regular nightclub scene on Wharf Street.
