After being coaxed by the girls in my office, I became the guinea pig to go try out back cove BBQ for the rest of the gang. What I reported back was that they made a solid pulled pork sandwich. Was it the best I ever had? Well, there are a lot of top notch BBQ places in NY so I can't go that far BUT for Portland without having to go downtown or to a chain, it's an A. The smoke is there, the sauce is decent and the best part for me was that it didn't have a bunch of fatty pieces like some do. I admired that when I asked for their specialty "handcut beach fries", I was told that he didn't love the batch of potatoes he received enough to do them so he could only do a standard fry order at this time. That's what you get with a little place like this.. A guy who knows his product and takes too much pride in his work to upsell you if it's not going to be a quality product. I'll be back again and looking forward to an order of those fries.

Ordered around lunch time mid week only one person working the kitchen and taking orders. Plan for a long wait. Too many items on menu, prices were high and the combos are not a value option. You get a small 8 or 6oz cup and they have a sign that says no refills. Will not be making the trip back.

$40 for 2 sandwiches and chips. My sausage sandwich tastes like feet. Never again. Spending an entire days work on feet...no thabks. Gross.

Why would you put brown gravy on what is listed as a steak and cheese sandwich? The soggy mess was terrible. Everything I ordered was terrible. I won't be eating here again.

I love a good neighborhood joint. To put it bluntly this is not one. The food is half decent but only for BBQ items. It is the owner, a nice guy, and a less than mature teenager at the register taking orders. I wanted a pulled pork and fries. "No" I was told. I can order the $10 combo which comes with a soda. But there was no ice tea or anything other than Pepsi soda products. I asked if I could just get fries on side? Nope you will still get soda or just pay the extra dollar for nothing. OK so the got the soda: a tiny Styrofoam cup with NO REFILLS in bold everywhere at fountain. A dollar for thimble of soda? She was visibly a bit perturbed at my confusion about the menu but I was still being polite. But then a doosie. I asked for a little hot sauce. "Well we will have to charge you...like...a dollar for hot sauce." I was floored being middle aged and having never heard that before! I told her I was shocked and is there anything special about it. She said "well if we had hot sauce available it would mean we buy the bottles, maintain them, keep them clean, and we would lose money." I was more than flabbergasted. Especially because I know how much a case of tiny Tabasco bottles cost. Yeesh. I asked if ketchup was extra and it wasn't! Yay. She was quite snarky at that point. Granted so was I, justifiably. In the end the mediocre food was not worth $10. The new burger joint on the corner is better and cheaper.

So I didn't set out on this trip looking for BBQ and I actually found this place kinda by accident while looking for a different spot to enjoy lunch. I stopped mainly because of the BBQ smoker sitting outside in the parking lot and the wonderful intoxicating smell of BBQ that was drifting from out of it. At first glance my impression of the place was that it was a dive and...it kinda is. Its small with a couple of high top tables and a counter with 6 stools. It is more geared towards to go orders then sit down meals and Foodies are probably not going to like it but your drunk Uncle Joe who loves a good hunk of beef probably will. The place is a combination of a Pizza Joint and BBQ. I did not try anything related to pizza as I was already sold on the BBQ. The menu is huge for such a small place with plenty of fried foods, some burgers, wings, tenders and about a dozen different BBQ sandwiches and meats (Pork, Turkey, Pastrami, Ham, Bacon, Kielbasa) They have another dozen or so fresh dough pizza pie choices. When we arrived a little bit after 12pm on a Monday we had the place to ourselves and had a nice talk with the owner who in addition to running this establishment also has a place on the nearby Pine Point Beach. He was very excited to talk with us about his menu items and his restaurant and we enjoyed the conversation as much as the food. Speaking of the food, I choose a Kielbasa Sub with Spicy mustard and sauteed onions. I also added on some sauerkraut to the sandwich. Simone had a Hoagie ( Hot Ham, cheese and Bacon) with Honey Mustard Sauce. We shared a side of fresh cut fries drizzled with Ranch and Bacon pieces . They were a good portion and were cooked nice and crispy. This was not a healthy meal and not a gourmet meal, but it was good solid artery clogging comfort food. The owner was proud of his food and that made the meal so much better. The Kielbasa was nicely smoked and had a nice snap when bitten into and the onions were sauteed perfectly sweet. I probably did not need to add the sauerkraut as it didn't really add any flavor and was lost with the flavors of the meat, mustard and onions. I actually enjoyed Simone's sandwich even more. Unlike most Hoagies that have whole slices of ham, this Hoagie was shaved thin and combined with equally thin bacon slivers and sharp cheeder cheese then sauteed all together on the grill to a nice crispy yet tender smoke filled bite. The honey mustard added a touch of sweetness to combat the smoke. I would go back a second time just for the hoagie. The Bread that both sandwiches were served in was dense enough to hold up under the juices from the meats and mustard's and was good. We finished up our meal by splitting a moist peanut butter cream filled whoppie pie and some more conversation with the owner. Overall, The food was typical BBQ and Beach fried food but done with some heart which always makes food taste that much better. The good conversation gets four stars....The food gets three stars and I would definitely return for more of both in the future.
