This review is for the sports bar at this venue. Went during the NBA finals. There are multiple TVs and 2 really large LCDs. The beer is cheap. The food was surprisingly really well done especially the cajun crust on my chicken in the fettuccine alfredo. The servers are chill and the crowd was really into the game. It was a good place to watch the game without too many frills with some good grub.

I find the above review by Michelle F. to be petty and vindictive -- given that there's some behind the scenes drama involved -- but, more to the point, totally inaccurate. To the point, then: I have DJed at The Asylum's goth night, Plague, on several occasions and have always found the crowd and the event to be among the better showings of the underground dark music scene here in the northeast. Trust me, I've spun at most of the events up here and I can, indeed, compare them all. That said: the people at Plague have always been friendly, outgoing and, on the whole, a pleasure to deal with. In a scene where cliquishness and childish attitudes abound I've never once seen such pettiness at Plague. The venue has a small, intimate feel and the staff has always been pleasant and supportive of visiting guests and the regulars who support the night. The place is clean and drinks are affordable, especially considering the behind-the-bar robbery that takes place in larger cities like Boston and New York. While every goth night going makes it a point to reach out to the non-goth crowd, goth nights may not be for everyone. If a person is so small minded that they view the regulars at such events as the above poster does, perhaps the problem is with a person's narrow minded perception of others. If, however, you're looking for a chill place to enjoy top-notch goth and industrial music in the company of easy going folks at a clean, safe and reasonably priced bar then I highly recommend Plague.

Actually, for Maine, it's not really that bad. There are at least some people there, which is all you can really ask for in a small town so far north. Rethinking the whole experience, it was interesting. I don't fit in but it doesn't mean you won't. The goth/redneck crowd is actually surprisingly nice, though the eye candy leaves much to be desired.. The bartender was hilarious.

I was pleasantly surprised by this venue. We came in for a concert, and other than having to wait in line outside because the inside bar was at capacity, had a great time. For a nightclub/concert venue it was surprisingly clean (relative people), staff was friendly, they had coat check and the bartenders were quick in moving the line along and making drinks. We had a few issues with others in the crowd being pretty darn rude - but that's expected in a standing room concert and no fault on the part of the venue. But I will say that if an issue had occurred there definitely were not any security guards on the floor with the crowd which isn't the smartest decision. Having worked in venues such as this all through college I must say it's one of the better ones that I have visited. We really enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back.

THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR RAP NIGHT and it's amazing. Went for the first time this week and I can confidently say we will spend many Wednesday nights there from now on. Such a good vibe and it wasn't too crowded. The crowd's energy is so great and the rappers are actually really, really good. They have a headliner each week before the "battling" begins and this week (Dre Jr) was really good.

I have to admit, this was the last stop in a bar crawl and I kind of hit my wall here. However, the bartenders were friendly and helpful. I wasn't sure what to get, so my partner told the bartender "she likes Malibu" and soon there was a Bahama Mama in front of me. The place was well-lit and the bartender let us know about upcoming events we might be interested in.

My husband and I had such a great time here! The food is good and the drinks are well-priced, but what really put it over the top was the incredible and friendly service we experienced here -- it was absolutely unreal. Bar staff and managers were so funny and nice to us. If we lived in the area, this would be our go-to spot.

Part nightclub/concert hall, part sports bar, part...goth club? Asylum is a bit confused, but a surprisingly large venue off Congress Street. In looking at the concert calendar, the booking agent seems to specialize in past-their-prime acts (I'm not judging, we were there to see the 90s-tastic Gin Blossoms, for Christ's sake!), but also seems to give stage time to lots of local acts as well. The space itself wasn't anything special, but the acoustics were good, the bathrooms were reasonably clean, and the drinks didn't come with the exorbitant price tag one comes to expect with live music venues. Email confirmation for ticket purchases are somewhat sketchy and bereft of details - the digital equivalent to buying a pair of shoes out of the trunk of a Pinto. Though we ultimately didn't have difficultly getting into the venue, I'd recommend Asylum adopt something more official looking so a ticket holder doesn't have to wonder if they just got ripped off.

Great place to see a band - excellent sound, great sight lines and the bartenders are real pros.

Security staff at this venue needs to do their fucking homework about advanced personal vaporizers, aka vapes or e-cigarettes. They searched my girlfriend's bag, which had a rather large vaporizer in plain view, and waved her in. After emptying my pockets for a pat down they asked me if my vaporizer was a vaporizer. I told them yes, it is a nicotine vaporizer. They informed me that I would have to stow it in the coat check and that I could not enter with it because "we've had some people mix in marijuana with theirs." I find it dubious that they would gladly hold an item in their possession if they suspected it contained an illegal substance. Despite my best efforts to put them at ease and assure them that I wasn't planning on using it indoors and would gladly step outside to use my device as well as the fact that it only contained nicotine liquid, the conversation was going nowhere fast with this bonehead bouncer. So I offered to unscrew my atomizer from the device and store that in the coat check as a compromise. There was simply no way I was leaving a $200 device under the supervision of a stranger on such baseless grounds. To highlight just how ignorant they are, my girlfriend took her vaporizer out of her bag and asked them why they were giving me such a hassle but that they had let her in with hers. They insisted that I had to check mine, and proceeded to let her in with hers. So we basically have an ignorant sexist making the call at the door here. Later on when I went to get my atomizer back, they had stored it on its side and it had leaked nicotine liquid all over the place. These idiots don't know what they're doing, or where they're going with this policy, or how to store said items correctly. There is just no rhyme or reason to the harassment I was subject to, this is just one more business in the Portland area that won't be seeing my money ever again.

Their employee at the Sea Dogs game refused to let Marcus Smart sign my hat in addition to the picture they were handing out, even though he was perfectly willing. Why do you care? Absolutely no reason for this, especially since I was the last person in line. Just a real jerk move. Next time you sponsor a signing, let people bring their own stuff. I would never, ever go here again after that.

Hands down the BEST wings in Portland! They actually give you real blue cheese dipping sauce and not that nasty blanch sauce from up the street. Very affordable, solid beer selection and great place to watch sports!

Slow, slow, slow. Took forever to get served, clearly understaffed. Plus I felt a little queasy all afternoon. Avoid at lunchtime.

I found Asylum to be a great facility. It's deceptively large actually. The time I went they had their weekly Goth night going on downstairs and a local metal show going on upstairs in the main room. I hit both. The local show was pretty awesome. There weren't more than 30 or 40 people there and that room is HUGE so it seemed absolutely cavernous. But that did not phase the bands or the audience at all so it didn't detract from my enjoyment either. The night downstairs was a great time too but I reviewed that elsewhere already. Overall I had a great time there and found the staff to be friendly and accommodating and the bartenders generous do decent tippers!
