Nice to find a newer spot in town. Nice atmosphere; come with the family or grab a spot at the bar. A few drafts available, majority being craft brews. We ordered apps only but they were all fantastic! Hubby said wings were spicy and the crab and lobster mushrooms (while more crab) were amazing. Nachos were fantastic! All the chips were smothered with toppings, not your typical pile of chips with meager cheese on about 1/3 of them. Thoroughly enjoyed this local spot!

Amazing place in a small town! Outdoor seating near the river (though no view of the water, only that of an old mill). Inside is new with an industrial and woodsy feel. Had a few of the appetizers, strongly recommend the loaded nachos. The chips are loaded with cheese and toppings, jalapeños are fresh and spicy. 6 beers on tap, which is sometimes a rarity in small towns (as well as free wi-fi, another rarity). If in the area, come and check this place out!

If you know anything about western Maine, especially the communities nestled along the Androscoggin River, you know how papermaking dotted their landscapes and shaped their cultures--that and probably Roman Catholicism. But Yelp is about food and eating out, right? Jay, Maine is one of the more infamous mill towns mainly because of the great paper strike in 1987, when International Paper tried to demand wage concessions and other givebacks from unionized paper workers. It garnered international attention and forever changed the community. I have a new part-time gig managing a grant for a local nonprofit and I have been driving through Jay for the past six weeks. Every time I've passed the sign for the Mill Street Café, I've been intrigued. After reading some of the reviews on Yelp and on other social media sites, I was pretty sure this wasn't the run of the mill place for Jay. Today, after an early morning meeting and presentation, I was headed back home and hungry. I decided that I'd finally visit the Mill Street Café for lunch. The place opens at 6:00 am for breakfast and most nights, is until 9:00 pm. I opted for soup, as winter cold and soup go hand in hand. The option for lunch was beef and barley and they had a special of a cup of soup and sandwich for $5.95. This would probably coast $3 to $4 dollars more in Portland just because it's Portland. The soup was a bit salty for my taste buds and liking, although it was flavorful, containing ample pieces of beef and a nice mix of barley. My turkey sandwich was excellent. The wheat bread was toasted to perfection and piled high with Boar's Head sliced turkey, lettuce, and just the right amount of mayo. My waitress, a personable young lady who I learned moved to Jay from Washington County, knew the local mill history and explained that the restaurant space had been the former mill offices for the management of Otis Pulp and Paper, later owned by Wasau Paper. Wasau closed the mill down in 2009. She indicated that it involved a major renovation to turn it into a good-sized restaurant space. It is large and during lunch, a bit cavernous. I sat at the bar, which was well-stocked, but I had to refrain from an adult beverage this time. Next time I want to try one of their cocktails, which I understand are very popular. I also passed on homemade strawberry pie, which I can't believe I had the willpower to resist. I mid-afternoon pit stop for coffee and pie is in my future. If you're passing through Jay on Route 4, look for the sign for Mill Street Café, bang a left or right (depending on your direction, and the restaurant is about ¼ mile off the main drag on the left. Mill Street Café has a themed menu depending on what night of the week you're eating there. Saturday is prime rib night. The menu is varied with pasta, seafood, and plenty of choices for meat lovers, as well as several burger options.

I'd love to go back and try something different. I had the chicken and pesto which was good but didn't blow my mind. The atmosphere is very cool, they've turned an abandoned paper mill office building into a restaurant with high ceilings and cool decor. We sat on the deck and looked out at the other mill buildings, which I found really interesting. It's just starting out, so I'd encourage anyone who visits to review asap so they can start reacting to feed back. They have a very impressive appetizer menu, but I wasn't wowed by the entree choices. Overall, I'm tied between three stars and four, but I plan to return and make up my mind.

With the Carriage house closing last year and the bad reviews I saw for the Chuck Wagon, the Livemore/Jay area needs a decent restaraunt. We went, not knowing what to expect, as their sign on Main St advertised Prime Rib dinners sometimes and $1.50 Coors Light some other times. The night we tried it out, there was a class reunion going on, so it was noisy, but the hostess told us when we walked in that that was what was going on and we were actually pleased to see that the place was packed and loud. Good for local business. I got the baked Haddock and my husband got the Fried Sea Scallops/ We were very impressed. The Caesar salad we had before hand was fresh and everything was great. Good service, friendly waitresses, not a long wait for food even though the reunion was going on. We plan on going back over and over again.
