Sisters Restaurant At Eggemoggin Landing

Reviews:
I'm writing this review to pine for my past. Sister's has been closed for the better part of a decade now... But those of us that worked there (I count myself as one of the originals) had some crazy, amazing times... working until 1 am, drinking in the on-site staff quaters, being woken up at 5:30 to cover for the breakfast waitress that didn't show up, then taking out a power boat for a few hours before having to come back and setup for the dinner rush again. Patty and Robin, the sister's, worked their asses off and hated every minute of it... but we were all rewarded in the down-time where we could joke and laugh about the customers and the rest of the crazy crazy staff. If you didn't eat here, you missed out... I really don't know what else to tell you.

Madelyn’s Drive In

Reviews:
Madelyn's Drive-in is a throwback to an earlier era in island life. There were once over a half dozen of these little take-out places in the Deer Isle area. In fact the predecessor to Madelyn's once sat in a tiny narrow white building across from the current location. My family visited it regularly during my childhood in the 1980s. So, I do have a bit of a nostalgic view of this newest version of Madelyn's, and Zi won't apologize for it. We have visited the new Madelyn's several times over the past few years. While the food has always been good, the latest cooking staff and the dishes they are sending out are the very best yet! The food is flavorful, well prepared, and made with quality ingredients. You can get burgers, dogs, sandwiches, fries, onions rings, and of course, seafood. They also have a yummy assortment of ice cream. My wife and I are vegetarians, and recently visited with seafood loving family and friends. We vegetarians had plenty of options to choose from. I highly recommend the grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. It appeared to have been made on thick homemade bread, was crispy, not greasy, and HUGE! I ordered the onion rings, which were yummy and not greasy at all. I also heard great things about the sweet potato fries. Honestly, the comments in other reviews about high prices are misguided. Yes, the seafood items are pricy, but for goodness sake, you're buying FRESH Deer Isle- Stonington caught fish and shellfish. These items are widely viewed as the world's finest. If you want to enjoy them, pay for them. They are certainly worth it. Madelyn's sells delicious and fresh food. Enjoy!
Ok, first the good: there's a playscape for your kids. After that, it is all downhill. My son ordered a cheeseburger and my daughter and I ordered clam chowder. He brought the food over and she and I took the lids off our chowder and gasped. "What is that?" she asked. "I really don't know" I replied. Apparently milk is one ingredient madelyn's does not use in their chowder, unlike most others. I'm not sure if the material floating on top of a clump of potatoes was butter or medium weight oil. I had one bite and both of us ditched the chowder. I rarely use the word 'disgusting', but their chowder was. Ick.
Get: Haddock Sandwich Madeyln's is one of the many spots in the region where you can score some tasty ocean treats including my Maine stand-by: the Haddock Sandwich. The flavor was good, the serving size was generous, and the location itself offered some R&R for the kids who suddenly decided that being in a car is the worst idea ever. The expansive lot is full of outdoor seating, a playground, and some patches of grass to hunker down on if you're so inclined. And if you're excessively masochistic, you can amp up the family with a wide variety of sweet frozen goodies. These positives are contrasted by some negatives including some steeper pricing for some seafood items, and a somewhat confusing ordering window/system. Certainly these things are navigable and I did so in humbly impressive fashion (not really) and ultimately didn't detract from the food quality and exprience. Positives: Location, location, location + good serving sizes Negatives: ordering system could better cater to idiots like me, some pricier items.

Whale’s Rib Tavern

Pilgrim's Inn,20 Main Street
Deer Isle, 04627
Reviews:
I don't live on Deer Isle, but my family has been vacationing there every year for the past two decades, so at this point I've come to know it pretty well, and one thing I can confidently state is that the island is something of a restaurant desert-- most establishments on the island are basically fried-seafood shacks that, although some are serviceable within that niche, one would never call "fine dining." So the Whale's Rib constitutes a local treasure, as one of a midget's handful of high-end restaurants on the island. The restaurant itself is charmingly rustic (and located on beautiful premises at the Pilgrim's Inn), the service is friendly, the menu is always interesting, and the food is delicious. I see a few of the previous reviewers have had complaints, but I've never been disappointed over a dozen or more meals, and indeed I fondly and distinctly remember many of the occasions (if not the details of the specific dishes I ate) I've been there. In comparison, I've had many underwhelming meals elsewhere on the island (see above restaurant desert comment). Although I don't know how I'd compare the Rib against high-end restaurants back on the mainland-- honestly, I've never felt inclined to do so, because one doesn't go to Deer Isle for mainland amenities-- if you happen to be on Deer Isle and are in the mood for a fine meal out, the Rib is your place. Just be sure to call ahead for a reservation, preferably by a few days if it's summer, because the Rib is basically the only game in town in its niche, and you'll be competing with many others who are equally eager to land a table there.
We visit here each summer when we are in Maine. We love that they use local products and that their menu changes seasonally. Great atmosphere and wonderful food...this restaurant never disappoints!! A true gem!
Menu changes seasonally. Fabulously fresh and innovative cuisine. Fabulous service and amazing views!
