The best part about this restaurant is the giant vegetarian/vegan menu. I felt very comfortable knowing right away what I could eat as a vegan, and it was pretty impressive how much effort they put into creating delicious food around diet. The atmosphere is dated and not much to look at, but the service is genuine and friendly. A win for me.

I hate to say it but damn. From the second I walked in I wanted to walk back out. The smell was horrible. It was like a cross between a public restroom and a dirty kitchen. It was late fall when I stopped in and I was just hoping for a cup of good coffee and maybe a sweet treat. I ordered coffee, and pumpkin pie. The pie was god awful and the coffee tasted weak, old and burnt. I really wanted to like this place as a local barista recommended it to me..... maybe there is another Salt Bay Cafe somewhere?

weird place, sat down and got handed 3 menus with everything from traditional, vegetarian, and Thai. How does a place offer that many items and keep everything fresh. I got a pork belly burger which looked great but the pork was leather even the fat bits. burger patty looked like something I can get at supermarket for cheap. Asked for medium, got more towards the rare side. Not going to be returning.

Good local restaurant for good food at reasonable price. Friendly staff will make you feel like a local regular. Mega breakfast for the heartily eater. Good muffins too.

There were a ton of items on the menu that sounded good, my wife and I both ordered from the vegetarian menu and the food was really good. I had the curry spinach potato cakes, my wife had the veggie pizza. And the menu was very kid friendly too.

Worst breakfast of my life-- expensive and not even eatable. The corn beef hash tasted like tuna fish juice and my husbands eggs were not even anything close to eggs. Low-quality is putting it nicely

First of all this is NOT a restaurant but a mediocre diner (mediocre is a very generous term here). The food is just really plain bad and actually, borderline offensive. The only amazing thing about this "diner" is the ability of the chef and his helpers to make anything and everything taste the same. Fish tastes like vegetables. Vegetables taste like meat etc. Things that are supposed to taste oven cooked taste fried! That's a feat in itself!..unless the microwave is overworking ...I have no idea about the few good reviews on here. How is that even possible? Were their Moms such bad cooks growing up? Servers are nice.

I spend quite a bit of time in The Damariscotta area I the summer. I have eaten at this restaurant numerous times. I always get enough food for 2 meals and the food is delicious. There is the regular menu, the vegetarian menu and they also have a kids menu. I am not a vegetarian but have ordered off the menu and have not been disappointed. The food is delicious, service is great, however the interior could stand to be updated

Great food, and a truly wonderful vegetarian menu!

AWFUL! pancakes were clearly old batter as they were flat and doughy. the hash browns were cubed potatoes that were deep fried and very crispy brown. the bacon was rubbery and under cooked. my 2 over easy eggs were clearly cooked in a ring on the grill and were one single round circle . It was overall disgusting. First and Last time in here. Waitress was very nice and notice that I barely ate food and took half off my meal. Very large menu selection but considering the quality of what was served I am skeptical. M companion had grill cooked English muffins that were pressed as flat as paper ..he said they were crispy like crackers but tasted good.

Meal totally meh. Sorry to say as everyone was nice and had that small town charm. Salad with tofu boring. Pasta with olives boring. Chicken piccata boring but best of the bunch. Sorry to say hungry townsfolk and tourists alike, but you can do better, even if you were cooking at home. Oh and strawberry soup as an appetizer just weird as it more closely resembled a dessert or high school home ec class experiment.

This place has fabulous breakfast. I was surprised when I searched for breakfast this place didn't come up. I suggested to Yelp that it should come up in the search as well. My boyfriend and I are not vegetarians and had a plentiful meaty breakfast - so don't let the vegetarian scare you away. I had prime rib hash to die for! We were so happy find this place, my grandmother lives in Pemaquid and we will be back for sure!

Overall very good experience. Started with soups - French onion, haddock chowder, a cold strawberry soup and lobster stew. All were delicious - the haddock chowder was really good. For main courses had fried haddock, fried shrimp, broiled scallops, and mussels. All were good - but I will say that the fried shrimp were the weakest of the four entrees and not as good as Sea Basket's. We split a chocolate mousse and Verne brûlée for dessert - both were fantastic. Only downside to the whole meal is that the cafe is not really much to look at - so it lacks in the ambiance category. Service was really good.

We went to the Salt Bay Cafe after hearing great things about it from friends. We had high hopes and were greatly disappointed. Our staff ignored us most of the time and when they weren't ignoring us, they were arguing with us, because they got our order wrong. They were rude and we waited 2 hours to get our entrees... never going again!

One lactose intolerant adult, one vegetarian adult, one vegetarian teenager, one seafood resistant carnivore adult, and one omnivore teenager -- it sounds as if Berkeley came visiting Down East. What a delight to find the Salt Bay Café. As one of our company is in a wheelchair, we decided that takeout was the better part of valor. We read several glowing reviews prior to ordering. Wow, Salt Bay Café lived up to their reputation. The food was wonderfully prepared, well seasoned, and generously portioned. Clearly, someone with real culinary skill had a hand in both designing the menu and the cooking. I'm not a foodie, so I will not go on with with every possible adverb and adjective. I'll just say that the food was great.

I thought the meal was just "eh". I had a lobster special which was just fine (how do you do something to distinguish yourself of boiled lobster?). I thought the steak my wife had was just mediocre and the artichoke dip was a little less than that. All and all the food was okay ... the decor of the joint reminded me of a Chinese restaurant from the 70s.

As a vegetarian who visits this part of Maine, I am desperately in search of meals that don't involve Pasta Primavera or Grilled Cheese. The Salt Bay Cafe is a welcome respite from these boring meals with a LARGE selection of vegetarian comfort foods! Last I checked, they even had fake meat alternatives like chick nuggets (this ain't health food, necessarily...) Every time we're in the area I insist we go there so we can all enjoy a yummy down-home meal with ample portions and lots of choices for the herbivore or omnivore. The cozy Maine atmosphere and friendly staff round off the experience.

I was so excited to receive their massive vegetarian menu but I'm afraid the meal that I chose was not amazing, just okay (Buffalo Green Stirfry). Everything was fresh and healthy tasting, it was just sort of boring in flavor. Everyone else at my table had the same opinion about their own meals - fine but meh. Still, I would def. go back and try other options! Nice casual atmosphere and plenty of things to choose from.

Whoa, a total gem! Sure, I'll agree that the ambiance and decor is not super fabulous, but it doesn't matter. The service was great, there were a TON of veggie/vegan options, and we enjoyed our food. The 1/2 sandwich/soup option was totally up my alley, and the haddock reuben was awesome. I'd be willing to go out of my way to revisit Salt Bay Cafe in the future.

Good pastrami and haddock sandwiches but the fries were limp and tasteless. Water and lemonade had a funky ammonia taste.

Delicious--could definitely use a decor overhaul, but what they lack in ambiance they make up with in portion size and options. Best place in the area in terms of vegetarian/vegan options, easily.

Had dinner here last week....first of all the restaurant is very unattractive and the hostess was less than welcoming...the food was mediocre at best....but the really crazy thing was that the chef keep coming out of the kitchen and wandering around....and he was in what appeared to be very ugly pajamas.....can take this place off the revisit list.

This place has not one huge menu, but two: a regular menu and a vegetarian menu. I'm thinking it's impossible for them to make all this food well - but so far the folks I have dined with have given them top marks so I guess that's a good sign. Pretty much if you're looking for something, it'll be on this menu. How a tiny restaurant like this manages to make so much food - the menu is seriously as large as that of a chain like the Cheesecake Factory - is beyond me. I had a salad, which was fine - but is hardly the best way to judge a restaurant. But as far as Maine standards go, it was a good salad. They avoided iceberg lettuce (which is typical in these parts) and made their own blue cheese dressing, which was a nice touch. The waitress was quite funny and even though it was a busy night, she kept us in the loop regarding delays on food and the like. I'd come back here again - it's not fine dining, but it's certainly good dining for regular company and conversation.

Food was very good. Kitchen staff yelling at each other did not add to the ambience.

We are staying in the Damariscotta for a month and have eaten at Salt Bay Cafe twice so far. The food is great and plentiful. The portions are enough for two. Thus far we have had the onion soup, a shrimp dish, scallop dish, fish dish the vegetarian chili and the gazpacho. All were tasty and made with fresh ingredients. Go at 8:00 and you should get a table. We have not tried breakfast or lunch yet but a local has said it's great.

This is great place for a vegetarian. I'm sorry that we only went once, but we will be back! The food was great, I had the Jerked Bean Patties with mango salsa, which was really good. Someone wrote a review that compared the table and chairs to an old Chinese restaurant. That's true! I really don't care what a place looks like as long is there is pride in their food and Salt Bay Cafe certainly has that. We'll be back!
