My husband remembers being a young sailor back in the early 60's. With a wife and small children, Tess used to give him credit to buy food and let him pay when he could. Ann, his daughter who runs the store now, is the heir to all of his knowledge about wine. If she can't answer your questions, no one can. The Italians and Pizza are unique and delicious. I agree with Nick, V. If you don't go to Tess' Market, you are a fool. An icon of a store.

Local gem...easy to miss if you're not in the know! Tess' Market is a tiny corner store on Pleasant Street and Cushing, just before you get to the Brunswick Post Office. Great subs, sandwiches and pizzas...and the WINE! Every inch of Tess' is crammed with bottles from every region, for every budget. Have a special occasion coming up? Looking for the right wine to pair with a meal? Shopping for a gift? Ask Ann. She knows where to look, and just what to suggest. TIP: Stock up and buy your wine by the case -- Tess' Market offers case discounts of 10%. (If you're a regular, Ann will extend the 10% discount on half cases as well!)

I'll start by saying, if you live in the area and you don't come here regularly, you're an idiot. If you're a tourist, you should come here and purchase large amounts of wine to ship home, I'm talking crates of it, because you will not find better prices in America. I moved out of Maine 11 years ago, the same 11 long years I've spent weaning myself off of their pizza. When I'm lying in bed at night and even the slightest pang of hunger hits, I know I'm going to be dreaming of Tess' pizza. And it's so dang cheap! I used to come here with my Dad every weekend and I'd be salivating by the pizza oven while he picked out wine. I'm pretty sure M. Tessiere used to order special wines he requested too. I know it'd had to have been the good stuff because he's one of those wine jerks. As an underaged patron, I do recall them also being a purveyor of fine and obscure candies- the good stuff. The only gripe I have about this place is the pain I endured when they would close for vacation. I haven't been back to Maine in 5 years but, I'll always know how to get there (Tess Mkt), from here.

The wine selection and knowledge to be found in this place is massive. Ann is usually around and can help recommend something for any price range. I usually feel intimidated by French and Italian labels, and can get easily confused- at Tess' you can get help without being made to feel like an idiot. Side note: My parents stopped in to buy my husband and I a bottle of tawny port on their way to our house. When they were getting help with their selection they happened to mention who it was for. Ann was able not only to remember who we were, but which ones we had already tried, and liked or disliked- Amazing!

A one-of-a-kind establishment. Tess's has a terrific selection of wine that is always less expensive than the other stores. The staff and owners are incredibly nice and helpful. I have often found wines I liked at restaraunts and they have been able to get it for me. After buying my wine here for years, I tried their pizza the other day and it was the best crust I have had in Maine in the 25 years I have lived here!
