If you are visiting Maine and find yourself in Augusta, this is the one place you should eat in the whole city. After driving many hours one day (as it is when you have family spread out in Maine and all towns are an hour away... *cries*), we found ourselves hungry and lazy at 7pm. My fiancée found this restaurant on multiple sites to fantastic reviews and so he decided he was willing to put pants back on to try the seafood stew. Let me tell you, I lay in my underwear and did not move the whole half hour he was gone UNTIL he walked in and the soup sang and then, well... You know how in cartoons, the boy gets a whiff of someone's perfume and suddenly he's lifted into the air, oblivious? It's like suddenly I was off the bed and on the table and I don't even know how I got there. We got a pint. We should have gotten more. It's called a "stew" but really it should be called a mixed seafood salad perfectly simmered in a rich, buttery sauce because it was pretty much. All. Seafood. Perfectly cooked lobster, baby shrimp, clams and sweet and tender scallops. We agreed it was maybe the best we've ever had. We also decided to have a whoopie pie and it tasted like a brownie cake, overflowing with cream, delicious. It was so good that we decided early-road-trip-back-to-Boston be damned, we would have it for breakfast. We made plans the night before. We were going to get the mixed fried seafood and a frappe and the foot-long lobster roll and more stew - a pint even. Each! According to Yelp they opened at 9am so we rolled right on up and... Closed. Words can not express how sad we were as it was our last day and there would be no more chances to return for a long time. So FYI, they are closed Mondays which is sad. Trust their website and not Yelp before it dashes your dreams.

Having had some of the best of New England and Nova Scotia's seafood, my standards might be a little high compared to others. I tried this place based on the high yelp reviews. Ordered a bowl of seafood stew. Nice light broth, but it was a little too oily/buttery IMO. Very nice ratio of seafood to broth ratio. But I only had one piece of lobster claw meat in my bowl. That's really lame. The rest was mostly fish and shrimp. At $9 per bowl, this was very disappointing. Maybe I was just unlucky. I left about half the soup uneaten. What a shame. Ordered appetizer clams. Only $4!!!! Lightly battered and well seasoned. Clams tastes very fresh and delicate. Not over fried. Awesome deal. Cole slaw. Good. Very solid. Good flavor. Home made muffin. Ordered one. Not the best muffin I've had. I'd rather put this money towards more lobster or dessert.

As I pulled up into their parking lot, I could smell the fried food and it made me salivate. But I am from PA, so when in ME, you have to eat a lobster roll. Right? I order the 1/4 pound lobster roll with lettuce. When I got my roll, it looked small. That's because all the fried food dishes I saw were ginormous. But as I ate my lobster roll, it was meaty and it didn't have too much mayo on it. It was solid. I wish I had a bunch of other people with me so I could have ordered a bunch of other stuff and had a bit of everything. They have a large picnic table seating area and it's a great place to eat when the weather is nice (and it was tonight).

This was our last stop in our Bar Harbor trip for lobster. Yes, it was lobster for breakfast for us. Call us crazy - we got the crustacean elation for $34.95 ( a foot long lobster roll split among the 4 of us). We also got the clam strip and fries to share. The seafood chowder was raved to be great, so we got 2 bowls to share. I think we overdid it for sure. The strips were good. I didn't think the lobster meat was as fresh as the other places where I've had lobster rolls, but there was still a lot of meat in the foot long no doubt. The seafood chowder was too watery and buttery for my liking. We ended up just eating the seafood in it.

The seafood stew was excellent- loaded with seafood, definitely OMG! Chicken basket was just the right size, juicy tender chunks of chicken. Very busy and service was super fast- indoor or outdoor seating. Really wanted to try their famous Whoppie Pie but they were sold out. Great place to eat!

Wicked good! Wicked fast! Wicked "I'll be back! The seafood stew is simply amazing!

  • H.B. ..

The portions are super huge! most of what they have is fried so if you are looking for that, you found the right place. This is a great place to chill, seating inside is limited, packed and always busy!! Need to at least stop in and try it.

One of my best dining experiences while in the New England. The seafood stew was excellent and the lobster roll was out of this world delicious. The atmosphere is friendly, social, and comfortable. The staff are very friendly and sincere. Will definitely come here again next time I find myself anywhere near Augusta, Maine.

When I was traveling through August, ME last year on a vacation. I happened to stop by this roadside seafood joint. I was pleasantly surprised to find it had some of the best seafood I have ever had. Lobster rolls are extra good. Also, make sure you have a Woopie pie before you leave.

My favorite restaurant in Augusta. Their scallop basket is, without fail, delicious. Perfectly breaded with tender, sweet scallops. Solid fries and onion rings as well. Haddock and clams are also quite good. Shrimp are teeny and get lost in the breading. They do not serve any type of healthy food, but it's worth the occasional indulgence.

  • Laura N.

Quick and delicious! Took my order to go. Got the fish sandwich and clam strip appetizer. Asked for lettuce and tomato on the sandwich and the woman at the counter happily obliged. Would love to try other options next time I stop by. Yum!

The Red Barn Serving Augusta, Maine. We're heading back from Maine to Maryland on a road trip and after research good lobster places around Google map lead us The Red Barn. The lobster rolls were tasty and very delicious. The restaurant is clearly involved in it local community and was obviously very popular with the locals as it was packed. I will definitely add this to my itinerary if I ever visit Maine again.n. Highly recommended!!!

Amazing lobster roll. I was driving from Mount Katahdin back to Boston Massachusetts, and in need of a good seafood meal. I checked on yelp and recommended the red barn in it. They had two choices for the lobster roll. The quarter pounder and a halfpounder. I had the quarter pounder which was very reasonable at $11. I also had a fabulous milkshake and one of the best will be pies I have ever had. Support this local business that cooks fresh fabulous seafood

I love this place! It's a one of a kind Jem. I grew up down the road and have lived out west for the last 15 years. The chicken is awesome, the chowder is insane and the Crustacean Elation is the best lobster roll in Maine!! If you are in the area go there! That's all there is to it...

  • Carissa P.

I visited The Red Barn today after being told by multiple people to give it a try. I couldn't be happier with the food or the service. Both were phenomenal. We got the Chicken Basket, Fried Mushrooms and a Black Raspberry shake. First off, the black raspberry shake is to DIE for. It's absolutely fantastic, and I think we all know how everything else was- WONDERFUL. I will absolutely be back. Huge portions for great prices.

Finally met Laura of the famous Laura's Seafood Stew! Absolute fabulous. No filler - all seafood. All their seafood comes fresh from Maine. Staff is gracious and friendly. Fast service, the food is always piping hot.

I visited this place when I went to Maine. This place is great for fried foods! It follows the fast food chain concept where you order at the register, wait for food, and seat yourself. They're quite generous portions of seafood for the price. I ordered way too much. I got the lunch snack mixed seafood, their special 3.99 deal on clams, and a chocolate milkshake. The seafood was quite a mix with some scallops, shrimps, clams, and also fries. Their chocolate milkshake tasted just as it's supposed to, ice cream through a straw! The ladies working there were super sweet! I heated up leftovers 2 days later and they were still yummy. It's a good place to check out, but it's not something I could eat often though. Fried foods are good, but also potentially a heart attack so don't overindulge for your own health.

Went here because I heard some great reviews. And I'm so happy I did. Food and service was great. The batter they use was perfect. Ended up grabbing a whoopie pie and it was probably the best whoopie pie I've ever had. Extremely happy with this place.

Crazy buttery lobster seafood stew= Yum!!! I certainly recommend to order SMALL size on every dish if possible. Very countryside stand and staffs are friendly. Make sure to order another soft ice cream, you are gonna go crazy after all fried foods. Good experience, that's for sure!!!! what else can you do near Augusta?

  • Paula H.

This place is always crowded. Service is fast and organized. There is indoor and outdoor self seating. Seafood and chicken are the primary choices. Chowder is always on the menu. The food is great and the portions are large but you pay for what you get. The place is a little noisy and frenetic because it's always crowded. You have got to try it at least once while you are in the area.

New to the area. Looking for the best see food. Found it at Red Barn! Fried clams---look no more! They are perfection. Generous portions. Don't let the long line discourage you...it moves quickly. Plenty of friendly staff on board.

Cool local spot in Augusta with large portions and fast service. This was a Yelp find while we were driving through Augusta and well worth the visit.

Excellent! The people were friendly, food was hot and delicious, and prices were reasonable! We loved that we could bring our dog and eat (we were on a long road trip and took her with us). While we were sitting down waiting for our food, a worker came over and asked if we needed a bowl and water for the dog (we declined as we had brought our own). The kids enjoyed the food and it was nice to sit out on the picnic tables!

The staff and owners of this cute amazing place need many awards. Their over the top efforts to help the community astound me. It makes me proud to be able to say I grew up just up the road a piece. I love finding a reason to come here to enjoy their lobster rolls. My last visit was exceptional and I also enjoyed sneaking bites of my nieces chicken tenders. This place has never disappointed.

  • Lisa S.

Worth the detour! This place is charming and has the absolute best seafood chowder I have ever had the pleasure to eat! The lobster roll was scrumptious. It was so good, we went out of our way on the way home to pick up another meal to take back to Rhode Island! Service was awesome and fast, lots of parking. What a treat!

  • Rebecca W.

The chicken basket is hands down best around. You can't get any better than this moist tender chicken and the batter crisp crunchy and bursting with flavor. The fried seafood is a wonderful medley of sweet meat bursting into your mouth with each bite. It includes delicious fresh clams scallops shrimp and fish. I miss the corn chowder. It was my favorite with smokey bacon and sweet corn. The staff are always friendly and inviting. The owner is always supporting some great local causes and the families of those suffering tradgedy. The owner is also an inspiration who has overcome many things herself. Whenever I am up that way I am sure to stop by and get my fill of some delicious fried food.

Oh my this is soooo good. The lobster roll was great, good bread. The fried Scallops were one of the best things EVER!! Love the tarter sauce. The seafood stew was to DIE FOR!!! The parking lot is big and even at 11:55a it was full but there were plenty of seats open and they place is EFFICIENT. Oh and did I mention that the breading makes everything magical.

This is the best sea food fry up that I have been to. It isn't something to do all the time, but if you're going for seafood fry, this is the place to go. Their seafood stew is excellent and the fried shrimp and mixed baskets were great, too. I was there in November and the place was full with a steady line to order. The seating was packed, and there were a lot of folks picking up take out.

This is fried food country. If that's what you're after, you will probably like it. I am not a fried food person. Or, I should say that I don't like fried food unless it's exceptional. I ordered the fried chicken breast thinking that I could remove the skin and eat the juicy white meat below. I didn't know that chicken meant cut up tenders covered with a heavy and salty batter. Inedible. As were the frozen French fries. However, my husband's fried scallops were lightly battered, not particularly salty, and the scallops themselves were sweet and juicy. There was a surprisingly good roll with whipped butter (a nice touch). Cole slaw was also excellent. The cabbage shined through a nice vinegary brine. Absolutely outstanding is the seafood stew. Large chunks of wonderful fish and seafood in a nice cream base. If they served only the stew and the roll and butter, five stars!

Red Barn delivers! This place offers some killer food that obviously isn't good for you but its so delicious. They deep fry everything and everything is good. I was able to try this place a few times while staying in Augusta and really enjoyed their deep fried lobster, onion rings were some of the best I had, their lobster rolls are also very good. Overall this place rocks and I will be returning next time I am in town.

We love going to The Red Barn. We always get the clam strips and the family chicken platter. The portions are far above expectations for the price. The food is great and when the kids approve it's a hit for all.

The Red Barn is by far one of the best businesses in central Maine. Laura makes the best seafood chowder and chicken fingers! I highly recommend if you are close to Augusta....please stop in and support a fabulous business!!

We decided to visit today, Labor Day Sunday. Yarmouth to Augusta for lunch, then a movie in Freeport. Figuring our first visit would be met with long lines and slower than normal service, we left a bit earlier than planned. After quickly finding a just vacated parking spot we surveyed the landscape and opted for inside seating as it was rather uncomfortably humid outside. The hostess welcomed us and upon hearing that we were first time customers, explained the ordering procedure and said the counter people would be happy to answer any questions. The place was pretty full but the long line to order? There wasn't one! After having a few questions answered, I placed an order for the mixed seafood basket and the haddock basket both very reasonably priced. Picked up a few salt and pepper packets and napkins...silly me didn't realize these items were on each table...and sat down. Moments later, my partner asked me to request some cocktail sauce for her shrimp. Now, here's the remarkable thing...as I was walking back to the table (which was clean) with the cocktail sauce, my name was called and my order was ready. Maybe it was five minutes from ordering, perhaps only four. Ok...the food! Hot, fresh, plentiful, delicious. The haddock is served in pieces rather than whole. Probably makes for more uniform cooking and can be easily picked up for dipping in tartar sauce and eating. The seafood basket had big scallops, whole belly clams, and beautiful shrimp, as well as haddock. Everything breaded and fried to greaseless perfection. Only regret was not substituting what looked like great onion rings for the good fries in one of the baskets. Very fresh cole slaw is a 75 cent add-on but rounds out the basket nicely. One other note...someone came around to sweep the floors, helping to insure an ongoing cleanliness that you don't always see in restaurants Our vanilla soft serve and small black raspberry shake (awesome) came to three bucks. What is this the 1990's? Just wish the ice cream server looked happier. But a minor flaw in the otherwise very friendly and competent service. Thanks, Red Barn...we'll be back.

Nothing I can say here that ain't been said before. Great chow served fast by friendly people. Huge portions, too! I've never, and I mean never, had more fried clams in front of me than I could eat until today. But boy did I try. Ooof. It was totally worth it.

This place has certainly earned its fame. The food is very delcious. My personal favorite is the chicken basket. The employees are very kind. Laura is a saint! She does an amazing job at bringing the community together. The pricing isn't bad in comparison to the hearty amount of food you get. It's is without a doubt a must, when visiting Maine or just driving by!

Great food at affordable prices! Had clam strips (perfectly fried, not too greasy), seafood soup (amazing, with lobster, scallops, and fish), and lobster roll (just plain good). Whoopie pie to finish it all off - good food, cheap price, quick service. Definitely would recommend to anyone traveling near Augusta!

I have been eating at the Red Barn since it was a tiny walk up take out place. I no longer live in Maine but a trip to the "RB" is a must every time we are in the Augusta Area. It is so good in fact we make a point of leaving our lakeside retreat and drive all the way to North Augusta to have a meal. I am personally a huge fan of the fried clams. The price of clams is prohibitive everywhere these days but well worth it with a large portion - I couldn't finish them all. The meal is good - fries, and an amazing homemade Parker house roll but the clams alone make a meal. For the budget minded there are always meal specials. We don't have anything bad to say about the rest of the food. Great burgers and sandwich options, excellent fried food and a good milk shake. A fun place to take the family especially during the summer concert series when you get dinner and a show on the front lawn.

Great place! Been open for years. The Lobster Stew looked splendid. The lobster was practically jumping out! I always go for the shrimp. I've never been disappointed- although Maine has banned shrimp fishing this year, so most places are sourcing from Canada (slightly larger and equally delicious). Fried clams are quite good I hear. I recommend sitting outside. Catch some rays, avoid the noise and clutter of the restaurant.

The seafood stew was awesome. Skip the fried basket of seafood and order stew for a light Lunch!!

  • Tammy S.

The fish stew was amazing! It was full of fish, shrimp, scallops, clams, and lobster! We got there at 6:45, not realizing that they were on winter hours (close at 7). They were very nice and let us order and eat there.

So happy this place is close to home. This has been a family favorite for me and my family for a LONG time. Reasonable price. Typical fried foods (who doesn't love good fried food?). Great outdoor seating. The thing that's incredible about this place is the seafood stew. It's chock full of goodness! (and unbeatable price for the amount of seafood!) Love this place!

Okay everyone, I'm reallllllyyy sorry to do this. You're all so excited about Red's... The lobster roll I had today was - without question - served with frozen lobster. Having been born and raised in Maine, I know that this is practically sacrilegious. We are in Maine, there is no reason to serve a lobster roll with chunks of lobster that are frozen in the middle. Either the lobster is pre-frozen or their refrigerator is set way too high. It changes the texture of the lobster, it changes the whole experience. Someone with a discernible lobster pallet will be able to tell the difference. I ate the whole thing anyway, because I wasn't about to put up a stink during the lunch rush. The coleslaw was delicious. Lob roll, coleslaw, and bottle of water was about $14. That's pretty reasonable. It was quite busy at lunch. Very down home experience, very nice staff, very quick, the fried plates looked great... but I'm bummed about frozen lobster.

Should you order a lobster roll 50 miles inland, on Riverside Drive in Augusta at that? Hell yes, I say, especially if it's at Red Barn Drive-In. I've heard so many positive things about this eatery, but I've been remiss in visiting mainly because it's a bit out of the way from my usual Capitol area travels and business. However, an old colleague who I haven't seen for months suggested dinner and when he suggested three choices, one being the Red Barn, I knew the time was right to make my first visit. Let me get this out of the way first; this isn't a white linen and table cloth kind of place. Why you ask? Because I'm always amazed at the dissonance on YELP that comes from the clueless reviewers expecting five-star dining in NYC, when they're reviewing take-out food on the side of a Maine thoroughfare. This is a take-out restaurant with above-average take-out food, with elements that go far beyond that category of eateries. It's one reason they've been successful and in business since 1977. Take for instance my lobster roll. Contrary to my own prejudices, you can have a lobster roll inland that far exceeds a seaside lobster shack. In fact, the Red Barn's lobster roll is better than many I've had at some of Maine's iconic and highly-rated lobster roll eateries. Toasted hot dog bun, ample chunks of what tasted like fresh lobster, lightly-dressed w/ mayo. Oh, and the young lady at the register asked me if I wanted lettuce, which I deplore on a roll, so kudos for that. The seafood stew was outstanding. Chunks of fish, scallops, shrimp, and lobster claw meat laying on top of a rich broth, with potatoes. Perfectly seasoned, too. And at $5.95 for a cup, this was a nice deal. Of course, I was pulling out all the stops (sans dessert), so I had the fries, too. They're the frozen, crinkle-cut variety, but deep-fried perfectly and crispy (not greasy). My lunch date enjoyed his meal of deep-fried clams and fries, also. If fried seafood or lobster isn't your fancy, there are burgers and chicken fare, too. Given the beautiful mid-week August day, the kind of 80 degree day w/ low humidity that you dream about during January northeasters, we opted for the outdoor seating option. Nice little picnic area, with the umbrella-shaded tables. I understand that their ice cream is also a treat, but given that I was well-over my calorie allotment that will have to wait 'til my next visit. If in Augusta, or nearby, seek out the Red Barn Drive-In. You won't be disappointed if you're down with drive-ins and take-out places, like I am.

Stopped for lunch. Rushed ordering. Didn't get to explore menu which is a little disappointing. Ordered a kids chicken basket based on the yelp reviews. Hot food very quick. Chicken was real chicken breast meat however was definitely fried with seafood or in same oil as seafood. Chicken tasted like eating fried seafood. Fries are frozen so nothing special. Ask for extra ketchup and quantities are huge so come hungry. Saw others eating seafood and onion rings which looked appetizing (as long as they're not fried in with the seafood as well). Prices are good and I love the idea of strong community ties & philanthropy of the business but I most likely won't return to eat because I wasn't truly impressed.

Really people this place sucks most everything is bagged and frozen. Had the haddock sandwich if you could call it that I had to remove the bun just to see the 3 little vandicamp fish like sticks, frozen crinkle cut fries, wife had their "famous" lobster roll (out of a bag) not fresh. There was a piece of cartilage the size of my thumb in it. And u get all this an u have to stand in line to order then u get ur food when they call u All this for over $25 We eat out regularly and this is the worst by far. We could have bought frozen lobster meat frozen fries cheap fish sticks and buns at shaws for half as much. I fed 6 of us at Mulligans, fresh food for $55 including appetizers.

I was very disappointed in this place. So many people said it was great and it was not. Service was horrible, portions were small for your money and its all frozen food....I could of just gone to the local frozen grocery aisle and got a better meal....sad thing is, I went there years ago, before they expanded and the place was a great little place, now it's not.

Little confusion over the phone, in that I called up at at 8:40 and they closed at 9:00. I told them I was at the Fairfield Inn, and they thought I said Fairfield Maine which is little bit of a hike, around 20 minutes away. I checked google and found out that I was only 7 minutes away. Family was happy, and I went and picked up the food. Fried Clam plate were good, as was the lobster roll. My order of scallops were good, but probably would of been that much better if I ate them at the restaurant as opposed to the 15 minutes it took for me to start wolfing them down at the hotel. The best part of the dinner though was the seafood stew, which everybody liked. I ordered it, but only got a taste(funny), it was chock full of lobster, scallops, and fish. I wish I got a bigger portion. Next time. Giving four because of the stew, because they were out of fresh tartar sauce, and I was given the packaged stuff which is horrible. Cannot wait to go back and eat the food there!

After 5 days of lobster rolls from the south to the middle coast of Maine, my favorite lobster roll was from Red Barn Drive-in. The lobster meat is from the claws, making it sweeter and less stringy. The meat was not hidden by the mayo and the spices were just right. Oh yeah, I almost forgot the portions, the place is a deep fried food nirvana and man is the food fresh and tasty. Hint don't order the meal, order the large portion entrée and you will receive only the seafood. The large portion is usually a dollar or two more for twice the amount of food. I got greedy and ordered the whole clam large portion and between my son and I we had to push to finish the whole thing. The clams were tasty chunks of meat and flavor. While I loved the deep fryer products, I think I would stick to the lobster roll only because I want to fit back in my car after I finish eating.

This place is awesome!! No frills take out and dine-in. Tables outside with live music on certain days. Went at 2 so it wasn't busy. Prices are unbeatable! Great seafood, onion rings and zippy coleslaw! They were also offering $1 ice cream cones! Unreal! Would definitely go back next time I'm in ME.

Best fried seafood in Maine. But don't stop there. The chicken is awesome and the Seafood Stew is to die for. The atmosphere is way casual cool, especially in the summer when yo can sit outside among the many picnic tables.

This is the correct place to come to for authentic Maine food. There's not a lot that one can say that hasn't been said already. I had the lobster roll. Seriously large amounts of properly cooked, fresh Maine lobster. It was mixed with a little mayo, served cold on a grilled, split top hot dog bun. This is the only way that a lobster roll should ever be served. Unless of course, it's gigantic and requires a larger bun. At $10.95, it's a good buy. You get 1/4 lb of fresh lobster meat. I also sampled some fries, which were crinkle cut and cooked to a golden perfection. Usually the crinkle cut are very soft and mushy. That was not the case here. Another person in my party got the fried clams. They were also properly cooked and very soft. Not chewy at all. For dessert I had a whoopie pie. At $1.25 it is an absolute steal. I would say medium sized, but still a great value. The cream was fresh and sweet. The Red Barn Drive-In has a nice outdoor dining area with several large picnic tables both shaded and in full sun. Inside seating is also available. They have a lot of other items on the menu as well, including some seafood chowder that looked out of this world. They have a large variety of beverages both at the self serve soda fountain and in bottles. This is a great place to come for some really good Maine seafood. As a Maine native, I give this my seal of approval. Hope to visit again soon!

It is awesome. Great food, seafood chowder is full of haddock, scallops, shrimp and lobster. Lobster roll fresh and generous. Nice benches on grass lawn and fast service despite being packed. Great place that is a little off the beaten track in Augusta!

I took the opportunity to gorge myself on as much lobster and fresh seafood as possible while spending a weekend in Maine for my cousin's wedding. Red Barn Drive-In was on my list of places to try. The big red barn building, picnic tables, pretty wildflowers in the back field, and loudspeaker declaring ready orders make Red Barn a quintessential local, down home, good 'ol American establishment. There was a line around lunchtime on a Friday, but it went very quickly, due in part to the kindly old ladies who take down your order on a receipt while you stand in line; once you get to the registers, you just hand over your order sheet and pay, saving a lot of time. We ordered a lobster roll, single serving of mixed fried seafood, cup of seafood stew, and large soda. Our order came out fairly quickly, which we enjoyed on the picnic tables outside. The lobster roll was a good, solid lobster roll. Huge chunks of meat resting atop of bed of shredded lettuce, nestled between a buttered and grilled thick toast. Yum. The fried mixed seafood came with scallops, clams, shrimp, and fish (we got a single serving without fries). It was addicting dunking the hot, crunchy bits into tartar sauce and popping them into your mouth...so addicting that I couldn't even stop, despite being extremely full. Grabbing seafood, dunking it in sauce, then tossing it into my mouth became an involuntary action, like breathing or blinking, much to the detriment of my cholesterol levels. The seafood stew didn't arouse the same response from me though, I felt the flavor was a bit lacking, though I appreciated the generous chunks of lobster, fish, shrimp, and giant scallop. Our total came out to $34.40, not bad. Not one to end a meal without something sweet, we heeded the beckoning call of the $1 sale on soft serve ice cream, and got a vanilla-chocolate mix, plus a homemade whoopie pie. The soft serve was nothing special, but the red velvet whoopie pie was great. Sweetened cream cheese held together two moist chocolate patties (for lack of a better word), so good. Head to Red Barn Drive-In, enjoy fresh seafood on red picnic tables, and appreciate Maine.

Awesome awesomeness. Try the stew. It is phenomenal. Great rings. Tasty fried clams (whole). Portions are ginormous.

Was traveling through Augusta and found Red Barn on yelp. Food was fantastic. Seafood stew was the best I've ever had with generous chunks of lobster, scallops and others. The fried clams are the best I've ever had, including the famous places in Essex, MA. The portions were huge, 2 baskets fed 3 well. Not sure what they have for dieters, but if you are looking for amazing fried seafood, this food is worth the drive.

I think we had set our expectations unrealistically high based on all the reviews, but I did think the lobster roll was very good, fries and onion rings were awesome. The place is obviously very popular, and the outdoor seating area gives it a "picnic" feel. We would definitely go back.

We were driving through the area and checked Yelp for seafood. The Barn had good reviews so we had to stop. I'm glad we did as we had a great lunch. We ordered the specials and got so much food we could't eat it all. The fried fish, clams, shrimp and lobster we fixed with very light breading and were amazingly delicious. The fries and onion ring orders were enough for two people. If I lived nearby I would eat there every week so I could try everything on the menu.

Had a enjoyable and cheap lobster roll for lunch. the staff was 2013% friendly, attentive and accurate.

FRESHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH That was the thought going through my head as I was eating their seafood stew. That cup of soup contains so many types of seafood, it's unbelievable. I'm not a seafood connoisseur, but I'm pretty sure my taste buds were going off the charts. I also had their lobster roll and that was delicious as well. I got my fill of Maine lobster :) As a side note, yes it's off the highway so it's easy to miss, but look for the big... wait for it.... RED BARN! Seems like they had plenty of parking in a private lot too.

Right off the highway, this was the perfect stop for lunch on our way home from northern Maine on a family whitewater rafting trip! I knew it was going to be great from the moment we pulled into the parking lot - at 1:30pm on a Sunday afternoon, it was PACKED! There was a line out the door, but a sign told us "Don't panic! This is a fast moving line for wicked good food!" so we didn't panic. And it didn't lie - we placed our order and had our food in no time flat! I was indecisive, so I ended up trying a little bit of everything - a lobster roll for under $11, some really tasty seafood stew (featuring a HUGE chunk of lobster claw meat) and the fried clam strip appetizer - all were delicious. My husband is a land-lover and got the chicken tenders and fries with BBQ sauce which he said was good too. The Red Barn is a great place to get great food (and huge portions) at a decent price. Check them out!

This is a pleasant place to eat. Causal and comfortable. They have a good amount of seating capacity. You order at the window and pickup when called. The food came out reasonably fast. This is mostly a fried seafood place. The lobster roll had a lot of meat but a bit too much mayo. The seafood chowder was absolutely loaded with large pieces of fish. Taste was average. The restaurant was clean. Overall this is a good inland seafood restaurant.

very good the seafood stew was good but not hot ,the sea food basket was very good and go again just for that .the even brought two treats for my service dog this gives them an A+ in my book

I had lunch here while in Augusta on a business trip. If you like fried, this is great! I know they have other things besides fried, but I got the basket and it was awesome. The staff couldn't be friendlier. I walked in and said "I've never been here...what should I get?" They liked that. Recommend their variety basket. The place is very busy, not the place to take a date for a quiet dinner!

Fresh, fast, friendly, delicious! Add the fact that they care so much about the community, and it only gets better. I love this place!

Never been a huge fan, but did go there once in awhile as it was convenit for my lunch break. The chickhen always tasted like shrimp. which was fine when I had shrimp. The fries bagged frozen crinkle cut really? But as with places like this its tradition place has been around for a long time.

If you didn't bring your hollow leg, opt for the 'snack size', otherwise you may find yourself overwhelmed with a tsunami of fried sea food that is as good as it gets. Woodmans, shoodmans, all that's left to say is AUYAH....!

Fresh fish, generous servings, great fried clams & very friendly staff that clearly enjoy their job. Very fast service! Happy that Red Barn is fairly close to me - about 25 miles & The Saab is dead :(worth every drop of gas!

The soup is quite good, and I prefer it to the lobster roll. It would be great if they offered some healthier options, but it was a good experience.

Fantastic local restaurant. We stopped here by chance on our way through town and were very impressed by the FAST nice service and great food. Why eat at a burger joint when you can get quality, fresh food? Best lobster roll we've had in Maine. Huge lumps of lobster. The haddock basket was overflowing with chunks of tender sweet fish, fries and a roll. Even the BLT was done right. Can't say enough about their whoopie pies and soft custard ice cream! Such an easy spot to get to from I- 95!

The Red Barn is exactly what it claims to be. A place to get a great lobster roll at a reasonable price. We found it light on mayo, fresh and tasty. The onion rings were above average. What amazed me were the huge baskets of fried seafood that kept passing my table. Based on the price and everyone's apparent enjoyment of them I would make a return trip to check that out. And of course another lobster roll.

  • James S.

The best haddock and sea scallops we have had in a long time. The batter coating was very tasty and light. We will make the trip up route 201 from Portland again. They have outside tables and extra parking in back.

Our go-to dinner spot on the way to Maine! The seafood chowder is amazing - so much seafood. Lobster rolls delicious and fairly priced. Onion rings yummy too! We love the outdoor seating!

One of the best lobster rolls I had while in Maine. They give you plenty of lobster meat and not too much mayo. Fries were also tasty.

Crunchy and yummy, every bite of the their massive-sized portions are a delight. Lines can run long sometimes, but they are hopping back there. I especially liked the haddock pieces and app size clams. Also really liked the scallops.

  • T R.

This was our first visit and we were very impressed. There is nothing fancy here...just fried chicken and seafood. That being said they do it perfectly. The food was fresh, crisp and non-greasy. The line was long but handled efficiently. We will definitely be back!

  • Paul H.

Good food and quick service, though it can be a bit rushed for new customers as they want to spend much time on your questions. Keep an eye on the prices here as some of them just don't make sense. Like a pint of haddock that serves two is $10.50 but a serving of haddock (serves 1) is 9.95. Seems like 1 serving should be more like $6.95 or 7.95 if two servings is $10.50, maybe? Also it'll cost you only 60c to add fries and slaw to that serving of haddock and make it a basket.....but if you want to add fries and slaw to your serving of clams it'll cost you $2.00. And if you want to add fries and slaw to your serving of "Mixed Seafood" it's free, so why not, right? (These are the prices on the take-out menu that I grabbed, your mileage may differ.)

The place to go if you want to eat inexpensive but well-prepared seafood, especially if you want to eat outdoors with your dog at your feet. They include a lobster claw in their seafood stew. The portions are good. The service is efficient and pleasant.

  • Melissa B.

Generous portions, fresh seafood, and the best lobster rolls. Since the Red Barn is about a 20 minute drive away from me, I don't get it very often, but when I can, I do. Everything is delicious and the portions are large enough for me to make 2 meals out of. I don't know what they season their chicken with but the chicken basket is hands down the best around. And the lobster rolls are done the way they should be: very very little mayo, no fillers, and negligible amounts of lettuce. When it's that fresh, you don't need a lot of clutter in a good lobster roll.

    (5)
  • Lisa L.

I must say that given the Yelp reviews, it was a little bit disappointing. The place was very crowded and people seem to be enjoying their baskets of fried food. My lobster roll was on the small side with mayonnaise and that's it. My husband's fried haddock was cut uniformly and indistinguishable from any other fried food. Service was quick and friendly.

I'm not a clam aficionado, but I do know good food. This place rocked! I got a mixed seafood basket lunch portion and my hubby got the clams. The clams were awesome. They tasted just like the ones we got at five islands, right along the coast. The haddock was moist. The only negative was the shrimp were tiny. The next time im in central Maine I'm going to the red barn drive in. oh and the very brief interaction we had with the staff was great. everyone was super nice!

I've lived in major cities from coast to coast, and now call the heart of the country home, but nothing makes me feel more at home than a chicken basket from Red Barn. I never miss making a visit whenever I'm in Maine, and if anyone else out there is looking for an authentic taste of Maine hospitality, this is the place for you. The staff couldn't be nicer, the decor is charming, and the food is out of this world. We've tried some of the other spots mentioned in these reviews, and they don't even come close to Red Barn. Maine isn't a fine dining kind of place, but when it comes to real good people serving real good Food, Red Barn is head and shoulders above the rest. Be sure and say hi to Laura, the owner, when you go in... She is a firecracker!

I was craving an original lobster roll as I was driving thru Maine and came across a recommendation for Red Barn Drive- In on yelp. Great choice! Definitely one of the best lobster rolls I've had!

  • Jill K.

Tasty food, very friendly and fast service. There's little better than stting at the picnic tables outside in the summer, noshing on their perfect crinkle-cut fries and sipping a Moxie. I'm not normally a fan of fried food, and this place is the home of fried stuff. But man, they do it right! The food isn't greasy at all; it's perfect.

Awesome, delicious food served up by sweethearts! We had the seafood stew, the mixed seafood basket, and a lobster roll, and all were excellent. We finished up with a home-made whoopie pie -- looks like an oreo on steroids, with soft chocolate cake sandwiching tasty frosting. Everything was top-notch, and the family that owns and runs the place were kind and generous. Go, you'll love it!

My wife and I found this place on Yelp! We live not to far away and we were surprised we never heard of this AWSOME food experience! We walked in and we were met with smiles from the owners and the workers, mind you not fake smiles but sincere make you feel at home smiles! They have been a family business for decades and the magic is still there. Open all year round and ready to serve FRESH FRESH FRESH. If you read this get in the car and go........Smile!

"Seafood stew" is a Maine-style seafood chowder with generous pieces of seafood including scallops, shrimp, and lobster claws. But the broth is very milky and seafood does not seem to be high quality. If you drive up Route 201 about 10 miles you'll come to the Lobster Trap and you'll be glad for the drive if you're seeking chowder.

Lobster rolls and local Maine Ice Cream, how much better does it get?!?!?

  • Chester O.

I don't see why this place gets such great reviews because you can get the same type of food at Mike's Place in Farmingdale and it's a lot better. By noon time the chicken tastes like fish and usually when you bring the food home its mushy.

When it comes to having good seafood in the Central Maine area, there is one place to go - the Red Barn! I thoroughly enjoy everything I have tried and I always get at least one bowl of Laura's Seafood Stew! There is nothing like it! Even their non-seafood items, like chicken and fried veggies and mushrooms, are second to none. So, if you are looking for a topnotch seafood experience, you must try the Red Barn. You will become a fan, I guarantee it!

Great casual, comfortable, and family place with super fast food, friendly service, and an easy atmosphere. Inexpensive prices belie the quality of the food. This place has been a regular stop for my family for many years - with good reason.

I'm from Miami so what do I know about Maine Lobster???. nothing except that is was damn good at this place! Had the lobster roll, seafood chowder and homemade biscuit...yummy. Its clean and kept...no fish smell. Nice outdoor seating too. Gave it 4 not 5 cause the name is deceiving...everyone knows there's no seafood in Red Barns...duh ;-)

I love the Red Barn!. I am a local, and I go there all the time. Seafood is great and the outdoor picnic are great for the kids. The indoor seating can be crowded when the weather prevents you from going outside however. Highly recommended!

Dined here with my boyfriend and parents recently. He had been telling me for a while how great it is. I just didn't believe him. My retired lobsterman father is picky about seafood, and loves a good plate of fish and chips, so we decided to try it. Ordered a few mixed seafood baskets, a chicken basket, and a cup of the stew and shared it all. We all remarked on how you could taste each individual type of fish, instead of them all tasting the same. The chicken had no trace of a fishy taste. I am betting they fry everything separate. Even thoWhugh it is clear the fries are frozen, they are still fantastic. For me, the seafood stew was the highlight, as I greedily moved it further and further away from everyone else so I could have more. HUGE chunks of fresh seafood. Often a classic Maine chowder does have a milkier and thinner broth than people realize, the thick gummy type of chowder is NOT a Maine thing! This stew was perfect, and reminded me of how my dad makes it. Delicious. Next time I am just getting a huge bowl of it, no sharing! Rounded out the meal with the 99 cent home made whoopie pies. What a bargain, and they were delicious! Can't wait to go back!!

Family favorite. Great food, reasonably priced, fast service. Plus, now larger with new addition. Best is the summer when you can eat outside -- you can get the dog out of the car and tie him/her to a picnic table, plus, the staff will give you water in a chowder cup for the pooch. Best bets: any fried seafood, seafood chowder, fried chicken, burgers. Basically, you can't go wrong. Only minus -- one bathroom.
