They've gone significantly downhill over the past couple years and today was a new low. I went for the saag paneer which was one of my favorites here in years past. They boast "Daal and Salad on the house with lunch entree." They shouldn't have bothered. the daal was a tiny saucer of watery goo and the "salad" was shredded, browning, iceberg lettuce on a plate. The saag paneer was almost all saag, though the couple pieces of paneer were very tasty. The fact that it tasted so good made the paltry portion even more obvious. I really wanted more. Unfortunately, they hadn't heard that it was 101 degrees out today and it was only slightly cooler inside the restaurant. This made the experience that much worse. The Washingtonian and other reviews they post on their window date back to 2009 -- nothing since then. Three or four years ago, I loved this place but unless I hear of drastic changes, I won't go back.

Tuesday evening, around seven PM. Two married couples including out-of-town visitors. We ordered five entree items plus additional naan and beer. Table, silverware, plates and glasses were clean. Serving staff was adequately friendly but we experienced some communications difficulty. Busboy knocked over a beer onto the table, then took relish plate away before the meal arrived. * Goat curry seasonings faint, unremarkable, meat gristly ( 1/4 diners liked it ). * Chicken korma flavor OK, gristle in chicken pieces ( 3/4 diners liked it ). * Shrimp biriani had tough flavorless shrimp, weak flavors ( 0/4 diners liked it ). * Chana masala was OK, nothing remarkable ( 2/4 diners liked it ). * Lamb saag, the group's favorite, best seasoned of the lot ( 3/4 liked it ) * Extra naan was delightful, warm and soft, fully flavored ( 4/4 liked it ). In general, all diners agreed that the food seemed closer to "dull", when were hoping for "bright, exciting seasonings". All in all, there was was nothing really bad about this restaurant, there was just nothing good enough to compliment. We have eaten lunch there several times, and tonight's supper meal was enough to make me fire up the keyboard and let the group know about what we found. I never give up on a restaurant, so we'll be back someday, but I am not sure when. By the way, we were the only customers in the restaurant for over an hour this evening. During our presence, only one carry-out order was collected by a customer. I worry that even our $100+ transaction will not be enough to help the restaurant make money with this level of business activity.

This is not a place if you expect good indian food. We ordered soup and it was disappointing. The briyani was pathetic. They ruined the whole dinner for us. This is coming from an Indian guy who has tried Indian restaurants around the US for the past five years. Save your $$ and go to some place nice.

Food was really good! The lamb vindaloo and the lamb biryani were both perfect. BUT ordering was weird. He didn't write the order down and got the whole thing screwed up. Plus it's overpriced. $35 bucks for two dishes and no extras.

Fantastic discovery! The aloo gobhi was out of this world! The chicken tikka masala was wonderful! Dinner for two with 4 glasses of wine only $55!

My family and I used to go to this restaurant regularly during its first few years of operation. Over time the quality of the food went downhill and the service became weaker. too. The food is still ok, but nothing like it used to be. The restaurant would really benefit from some fresh dishes on the menu and a remodelling job so that the place seems a little fresher.

In thr mood fkr Indian and a client of mine recommended this place. I had the Kadai Gosht (lamb with peppers, onions). I asked for their specialty and this is what they told me to get. Good lord it was fantastic!! Fantastic flavor and I had them make it spicy and this is key, ask them to make it with "less oil". My Bengali client said this makes the food taste better and its less greasy. I will continue to order this way. My god the naan!!! Super soft, pillowy, and full of flavor. Their rice also had a really great taste which I didn't expect but was very pleased with. I will come back and try my normal dish chicken vindaloo. I am really happy this place has new ownership, I can't wait to try the rest.

Bombay has authentic Indian food. Prices are incredibly reasonable for such good food. Came here with my 7yo who is terribly finicky and he loved the chicken tikka and naan. We had leftovers to take home. The service is very good, very attentive. The food doesn't come out very fast but doesn't take long and personally, I like to think that my food is being cooked fresh so I didnt mind. I don't know why this place isn't packed all the time! They've found a new loyal customer.

Update - during this meal which was rather good, we were fast talked out of using a coupon by the staff. After the meal we called the coupon company and they did not know why the Bombay did not honor the coupon.

It's okay not much to say but the flavor it there, I had the curry shrimp. The shrimp were over cooked and the rice was a little hard to describe. The garlic naan was the worst I've had this far in life. However, the salmon has its good days.

I've always enjoyed the food here. It is a bit on the pricy side, but the taste is fantastic, and there's a decent helping (Two people could eat off of one order, and potentially still have some left over, if you got an appetizer, or extra order of Naan. I've enjoy their selection of different Naans, and I've had four or five different dishes (of which I won't even try and type out). I've enjoyed it all. It takes a little time, but my friends and I enjoy splurging here for Indian food occasionally. Due to the slightly higher price, I don't eat here that often (and is why they get a 3 star rating, instead of 4, honestly..although consider it a 3.5 star rating). The inside is quiet, traditional Indian restaurant decor--but it looks MUCH nicer on the inside than the outside, and is not what I expected given the outward appearance of the strip-mall area it is hidden in. I enjoy the samosas, and I like the selection of three sauces that come with the hard brittle bread that they bring out. I always get at least two meals out of everything I order, so that does help the price. The service is always nice, as long as you don't expect to have long conversations about anything with your server.

Bombay is one of the best Indian food dine in/takeout restaurants on my side of town. Well not exactly my side of town, but I am willing to make the drive. First, for their Chicken Tikka Masala, chunks always tender and sauce always done perfectly. Their basic entrees are enough to feed two people, dishes run between $12 and $14 with a choice of naan or basmati rice. What makes Bombay so unique is that they have 8 different types of naan a few to name: onion, spiced wheat stuffed with potatoes (Aloo Paratha), Keema with herbs and butter, even one with nuts and dried fruit (Kashmiri). On their menu they also make it a point to say that all of their fried dishes are prepared in low cholesterol oil and low fat vegetable oil. Thank you Chef Binod! They say he's been cooking traditional Indian dishes for over 30 years. And the best part is you can taste it. So this weekend I tried something new, the Chicken LA-Jawab cooked with tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and cilantro. Excellent and not real heavy (in terms of calories in the sauce). The menu has plenty of selections so there is no way you could run out of things to order. The restaurant itself is homey and pleasant, but it doesn't strike me as a place I want to dine in, because it's super quiet. They also have a bar, but it would almost seem like I was sneaking swigs in the public library or something?? So, I rather take my food and liquor back home where I can make all the noise I want!

Not even close to my favorite mediocre indian restaurant. Super greasy and soupy. Most dishes have the same flavors with little variation in seasoning or heat.

We generally order the Chicken Tikka (white meat requested), Chicken Curry, saag paneer, regular naan, and vegetable samosas. The chicken is flavorful and tender, the naan and samosas are delicious, and my daughter loves the saag paneer. The new management (since April 2014) works hard to keep their customers happy.

Not to gross anyone out, but I think the food was better coming back out, then it was going in. We were to have dinner with my sister in law and I asked her to pick a place nearish to her. She mentioned this Indian restaurant - she had been here once before and enjoyed it. We arrive and the restaurant is small and homely - the way that we like it. I also spied a bunch of Washingtonian awards...but the last one was from 2008. I checked on Yelp, and it seems that this place has been going downhill since then. Immediately, I get worried about my dining experience...especially as I was *starving*...but tried to think positive thoughts. Yeah...I don't think even Mary Poppins could think of enough happy thoughts to save this meal. I can't even get into details...Yelp doesn't give me enough space to get into it. But the entire meal was just awful. To start, the service was abysmal. We ordered 3 diet cokes and it took nearly 10 minutes to come out. Not because they were busy (we were one of 2 tables), but because they FORGOT. Then, when we pointed out that we were still waiting for our drinks, we got attitude. Althought the menu clearly stated that our appetizer came with a dipping sauce...none came out. When we asked the server about it, he just walked off (as if he was going to bring it out)...but it was really just to talk to the other server. When we flagged him down again (10 minutes later), he said that it didn't come with a sauce - looking at us as if we were morons. Our entrees took nearly an hour to come out (lamb korma, lamb vindiloo and shrimp curry). And when it did - the food was lukewarm. My lamb vindaloo had some of the toughest most jerky-like lamb I've ever had. Also - the vindaloo sauce was...bland! It took nearly 4 more requests to get our naan...which we ordered at the begining of our meal. And through it all - the servers acted like we were inconveincing them by being there. In all the years that my husband and I have eaten Indian...in all the many many many Indian restaurants that we've been to...this was the FIRST AND ONLY time that we DIDN'T finish our meal. More then half of our entrees were left, and we didn't finish off the naan. I hope this illustrates just how bad the food is (and we're fatties! We eat *everything*). NEVER. GOING BACK. AND I REALLY need to teach my sister in law how to use Yelp...or enlighten her palate.

I love this place!! Surprised to see several ones or twos. I like the CTM and the aloo ghobi. The naan is pretty good, and the wait staff are friendly.

is this place a joke? $20 for dark meat drenched in tikka sauce? every chicken tikka i have had has white meat... also its basted in the sauce served with rice....not drenched in the sauce to the point that it looks like soup? seriously this place sucks!

I give this 4 stars for the food, but only 2 for the service. Sometimes they can be downright surly, but the food is quite good most of time...

Expensive.. But no bang for the buck! Suspect poultry in chicken tikka masala, but malai kofta was pretty good once top layer of oil was removed.

I'm just posting this to second a lot of the comments previously posted here. When this place opened it was indeed, as the Washington Post said, "shockingly good." It used to have a lunchtime buffet for $7.95 where you could sample to your heart's content. Then they quit the buffet, allegedly because the chef didn't want to cook all that food. They went to a prix fixe menu wherein you could select one entree and get either rice or naan, but not both. Lately, they've posted the dal and salad thing. Worse, the entrees, which used to be good portions, now consist of three or four pieces of meat swimming in sauce. It DOES still taste pretty good but it's not worth the price. Once upon a time, I used to recommend this place to everyone and, a couple of times, took groups and guests in there. No more. Owners of Bombay Indian Restaurant: Get back to where you started or I fear, this place isn't long for the world.

This restaurant gets two stars because the food is great. Naan is soft and warm, and there is great selection. The lamb dishes are quite good and so are the chicken (chicken tikki masala for the win!). Be careful when the menu says "spicy." If it says it's spicy, it will be extremely spicy. Some dishes are so spicy, it can be difficult to taste the flavor of the meat and vegetables you're eating, but the menus do a good job of warning you. The lack of the three remaining stars comes from the service and an event I saw. First the service: attentive, but rude. The waiters sometimes have an arrogant nature about them. The manager of the place is extremely rude...and this is where I go to the event: I'm not quite sure why the customer approached the manager, but a customer approached him one day and they started talking. The next thing I know, the manager is yelling at the man and calling him stupid. The scuffle between the two men was getting so out of hand, another random customer got in between the two and tried to defuse the situation. The bout between the two was so loud, the entire restaurant got quiet and was forced to listen to what was going on. The customer threatened to never return and the manager kept yelling "I don't care. You say stupid things!" Within my personal interaction with the manager, he didn't yell at me or my party, but he gave us attitude problems when asking for something simple like a glass of water. I've been to the restaurant about five times and I can say that I will never return. I would say this establishment is a great place for take out, but if you want to dine in, prepare to deal with some rude (and possibly hostile) employees.
