Don't let the outside deceive you. Very nice inside. Good bar and they make great margaritas. Food is pretty good too. Nice local place .

Average Tex Mex eatery. The food and restaurant should get a 2 star but the staff were so nice it will get a 3. Bright hispanic colors that serve margaritas. I cant comment on the alcohol because I was not able to imbibe. Menu had some interesting items including oysters that you usually dont see at a tex mex restaurant. Got the enchiladas. Seems like it ran into the same ole te mex restaurant problems, refried beans didnt taste fresh and the beef in the beef enchilada tasted a little off. I'll give it another shot, maybe this place will grow on me.

This new, local business needs to step it up! The menu has standard Tex-Mex offerings. The margaritas are strong. My enchilada was good, but not more so than your average. The beans are not good at all and the rice is oily. It seemed like the service is the biggest hardship here. Our waitress was very sweet, but overwhelmed. Drinks were very slow to arrive. Surrounding tables were covered in dirty dishes and needed to be bussed. The hostess was no where to be found when we walked in. This area of Lakeshore could really use a great local restaurant. We'll give them a few more weeks to get over their growing pains and maybe try them again for brunch or lunch. Our week night dinner left much to be desired.

Best quesadilla I've ever had, and the margaritas are great! Good, friendly service. Never had anything that wasn't fresh and delicious. I've taken all my friends there, and I highly recommend you do the same.

We love Picantillo! There are very few consistently good, non-franchise chain restaurants in the area but Picantillo is definitely a stand out. First, the service is incredible. Wait staff is attentive, quick, knowledgable and not afraid to make a recommendation. All great in our book! Second, the food is incredible. Tonight's chimichanga's were some of the best we've ever eaten. (One shrimp and one carnitas) The house made salsa and chips are a great start. Oh and don't miss the crab and cheese stuff jalapeños....just the right amount of heat to make them great for anyone's palate. We've tried the tacos, enchiladas and the tortillas; all tasty and perfectly cooked. Margaritas are tasty and good sized. The menu is well priced and pretty cheap compared to the high quality of food and portion size. A little shocked to read other reviews of this restaurant claiming the prices are high. Where else do you get a huge shrimp chimichanga of this quality (over 15 shrimp), chips, salsa, beans and rice for $13 at a sit down restaurant? Umm no where. For those who don't appreciate excellent Mexican food, Taco Bell is just up the street!

Just tried Picantillo for the first time today. Was great and amazing food. My wife and I tried the combo platter and the three chip dunking combo. It was amazing. Prices were reasonable and the staff was friendly, nice, and very helpful with what to try for a first time. Will have no problem going back to this place.

Love the brunch at Picantillo! Lunch/dinner good as well but breakfast is where it's at! Love server Theresa always nice and remembers what you like.

This little resturant has been here for awhile now and I finally got the chance to dine there last month. We had the Tacos, hard and soft and I must say I am picky about Tacos and I really liked them. The chips and salsa was also a very nice addition to the experience. Our Waiter Jarrett was very nice and attentive. It was overall a great experience, we will be dining there again soon.

Excellent food and service. I have dined here many times and each time I have been very pleased. Although I used to go to Lista's, Picantillo's is a better dining experience and a much better value. Go here and you will come back!

Decent food, but slightly over-priced for the quality. I would definitely go for their happy hour and sit in the bar area; the bar tender is great --very nice, but not too talkative-- and they always have sports on.

Friendly staff and easy atmosphere. We stopped off after a family event for a drink and really enjoyed our visit. Tasty chips and salsa + margaritas.

The "Dinner Specials" page inserted in the menu said "Large House Margarita- $6". It seemed a little pricey, but we went ahead and ordered two "Large Margaritas". When we got the bill we were charged $9 each for the two drinks. When I said they were supposed to be $6 the waitress said that is for the "HOUSE" margarita. I just smiled and said nothing, knowing that she was going to personally pay for the overcharge for me anyway, out of her tip. I thought the food was OK but overpriced. If they would lower their prices by 25% across-the-board (and stop the bait-and-switch) then I think the place would be popular. However, I was there on a Saturday evening during dinner hours and the place was only at about 1/3 capacity. My guess is that they won't be in business very much longer unless they offer a better value. Instead, my suspicion is that they are failing, panicking, and desperate enough to do the bait-and-switch.

Last time we picked up food, they forgot to include the soup. Could not refund the cost, only give us the soup next time we visited. Or we could drive back to the restaurant. Tonight we ordered tacos, and the soup that was missed last time. They remembered the soup, but did not include the sour cream, guacamole, lettuce or picante sauce that are included with the taco platter. If you get carry out, check your order before leaving the restaurant.

The Picantillo consistently offers up fresh, delicious Mexican food. It is a small place, but nicely decorated. I did not expect much at first, but I've come here about a dozen times in the past year and each time the food was great. The Picantillo salsa is by far the best I've ever had, and I always buy a container of salsa and chips to go. I've had soft chicken tacos, burritos, blackened mahi mahi tacos, and other items. I even came here for their weekend breakfast and enjoyed it very much. Their menu is more expansive than I have tried, and they do offer other non-Mexican fare. It's great to have an authentic Mexican restaurant in the area.

Food was bland and overpriced. My daughter was served a completely different dish then she ordered. My daughter said she would eat the served dish because she didn't want to get her food after we were all finished (eat alone at the end). To make matters worse the dish she was served was more expensive then the one she ordered...guess which one we were charged for?

This place is about as average as you can get. The salsa tasted like ketchup, the tortillas were standard, the steak in the fajitas was tough, the guacamole didn't taste super fresh, and the peppers didn't have a lot of flavor. I compare this restaurant to El Salto's in Glen Burnie. I have definitely had better. There is nothing about it that will draw me to come back.

Saw the coupon for this place in the Pasadena Voice. Figured it was worth a try because if it sucked we could just stop at Texas Roadhouse on the way out. It didn't suck. In fact, it was pretty good all the way around. I got the chicken quesadilla which was nicely stuffed. Hubby got the chimichanga with steak. He enjoyed his as well. The refried beans appeared to be homemade. His only complaint was the meat was more like stew meat than seared but still tasted good. We'll go back. The waitress/bartender was very good and stayed on top of our need. It's nice to have a mexican place close to home that's not as pricey as Lista's. Keep in mind that this is down Mountain Road from Texas Roadhouse, so traffic can suck majorly and the parking lot is quite small.

This is one of my favorite restaurants! It looks like a dive on the outside but when you go inside it's nicely renovated. the food is always fresh and delicious! We live in Baltimore but when we are craving great Mexican food we definitely make the drive!

This wasn't the worst Mexican food I've ever had, but it was far from "good". We won't be back. I'd rather take the few extra minutes to drive to Plaza Garibaldi or Los Portales.

We have only dined at Picantillo on a couple of occasions but we were pleasantly surprised each time. They have a nice mix of food on the menu and their margaritas are very good. The first time we went I had the Shrimp Fajita Wrap which was really good but I really wished that it was served with fries instead of more tortilla chips. My husband had the Chimichanga which he really enjoyed. The last time we went I had the Crab Cake Sandwich and I actually liked it quite a bit. It is nice to have a restaurant like Picantillo in Pasadena because they offer something different and they have reasonable prices.

I originally wanted to go to another Mexican joint, but my wife (her name is Jen) doesn't like to agree with anything I suggest so we had to try a new place. It's close to home & I only wanted fajitas so I figured 'what the hell'. Although Picantillo wasn't my first choice, I had insisted on Mexican so naturally my wife (Jen) had to make an effort to NOT enjoy her meal because she doesn't enjoy when she isn't in complete control. The service was great, but I have to admit that there were a few things that just weren't right. I have no problem admitting that my choices aren't 100% flawless. One thing is that the queso is Velveeta based, which is good but I expect more from a Mexican joint. The fajitas were good, but the chicken lacked the 'grill flavor' I expect. The plate could use a lime wedge or two as well. I won't get into my wife's opinion, for one because her's isn't valid in this instance, plus I will run out of web space if I tried. I would come back again but I'd have to somehow make my wife (Jen) think it was her idea.

I grew up in the Dena, and when I come back to visit my parents I always subconsciously hope we'll go here. After the 177 Diner coasted downhill and out of business, I didn't have super high hopes for what would replace it. I was intrigued to find a Mexican restaurant in the space, and I was thrilled to find that it's actually GOOD Mexican food. I lived in Colorado for 9 years, and while, as a relatively gastronomically uneducated gringa, I can't really discern "authentic," I got used to Mexican food that has rich and balanced flavors and is consistently satisfying. I've been to this place about three times now. Each time, I left happy, albeit on a couple of occasions I was about ready to explode. (The combo platters are sizable.) Based on a couple meals my parents have had, El Picantillo also does a pretty good job with sandwiches, salads, and other general American staples. I had a leftover crabcake that my mom got there once and was pleasantly surprised. At some point I'd like to try just going for drinks, as the bar area is cute, but in the meantime I can recommend a Mexican coffee (or two) as an after-dinner drink. Yum. So glad this place has moved in, and hoping they stick around!

After living in California for three years I cried when I tried Mexican food in the state of Maryland, until this place. So far everything I have tried has been great but my favorite is the enchilada combo platter (I always call it the Enchilada Trio but that is not it's proper name). Margaritas are really good too.

There is something for everyone. From chimichangas, tacos, and empanadas, to sandwiches, salmon, and hot wings. The food is great and the margaritas are even better. I highly recommend the muscles appetizer, trio platter, and the best quesadilla I have ever eaten.

Still has some growing pains. Guacamole made with under ripe avocados and carne Asada missed the park in flavor. Also significantly missed the mark on medium rare. Steak delivered well done. On the plus side margaritas outstanding and great beer selection on tap and bottled. Rest of food ok not great.

Had a great experience here on Thursday night! The service was good & very friendly. My meal was fresh & tasty. The margaritas were very good. I will definitely come back.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
