Love it here!!! My husband eats here at least 1ce a week. Great rolls, super fresh tasting sushi & sashimi. My favorite roll is the Dub Fire Tuna Roll. The Lemon Chicken is in a superb in crunchy breadcrumb and the lemon sauce is the perfect balance of sweet & tangy. The staff is a wonder. They are all so friendly, we feel like we are walking into "Cheers", they have a great way of making you feel at home and welcome. We have been eating here for the past 5 years and hope to continue for another 25! Congrats to John, Mary & Jackie Chan & the rest of the team!

Ok so there is a lot to say about one of my favorite sushi joints in Pasadena. First and foremost, deplorable conditions surrounding their interior and food most recently are a direct reflection of my degraded review. My most recent visits have been less than 2 weeks apart. First my GF and I went for sushi, something we have always had a good experience with. Their sushi is still some of the best I have had in Maryland -- though their not Joss, it's better than anywhere I know in the area. We were sat in a booth, something I sort-of hate there. Their booths are giant as if they're making fun of their customer base, maybe suggesting they're too big to sit in a normal sized booth.. idk. But the one I sat in had ripped up seats, and unclean floors it looked as if this place is not maintained by it's staff. Plus it was during the Orioles play-off game they have one tv but decided to display what the chef's wanted to watch, I heard a few other tables complain about the fact they didn't have it on. Not that big of an issue but its notable. My second visit was for a quick lunch, the pricing for lunch is good, and the amount of food you get is filling, though it is smaller portioned. But I took a REAL look around. The ceilings are disgusting, the air vents have never been cleaned and there is gratuitous amount of dust lingering around them . The floors, at 1pm where awful, it's like they had rice and other remnants from nights prior lingering on the floors, and they opened at 11, so I doubt the entire underside of all the tables got that way so quickly, it wasn't that busy. While looking on the floors I noticed how the carpet was fraying, and just looked like the place has seen better days. Whatever, I don't expect world-class dining in Pasadena, but still it's gone downhill, and so has the food. I had a small house fried rice dish , which resulted in shrimp, that were severely overcooked, not deveined and just awful. The chicken was flavorless, and mostly the whole dish left me unsatisfied -- as it did the same for my GF on our second visit. The customer service we got both times was also questionable. Originally my first visits here resulted in awkward experiences from the staff who asked random personal questions and made suggestive remarks which were rather offensive while you were ordering: "oh..wow...that's a lot of food." Six rolls for 3 people to share?! STFU. That was 6 years ago, and now again, I am left feeling like the service is about back to that standard. I am no longer taking my business here, it's terrible. 2 stars.

The food wasn't bad but the service was only so-so. I will try the restaurant again and update my review.

Olive & Sesame is my BFF's go-to asian dinner spot, so I end up eating here every time I am in town. The food is interesting and has great integrity -- fresh & thought-fully prepared. They've gone off-menu for me a couple of times, something I really appreciate. Most recently I got the LoMein with beef -- the beef was perfect. The service has always been excellent, we even get hugs when we arrive! Definitely, give it a try!

The first time I tried Olive & Sesame it was a pleasant experience with pretty good sushi. However over the years, unfortunately, the quality has gone down and has never been able to redeem itself. The last time I ate here both my fiancé and I got incredibly sick from the bad sushi. The Chinese food was oily and tasteless. I refused to give up, always inquiring to go back and give it another chance. But alas my fiancé refuses to give it a go.

Short version: "Skip the Sushi." Bear in mind I really want to like this place, when you consider my two stars. Probably would have taken near-immediate ill effects of bad fish to get one star out of me. But I considered it. Long version: After several surprisingly pleasant and consistent dinners, we thought we'd man up and try the sushi. Whoops. Stick to the Chinese side of the house. Any sushi joint with a little self respect (as in "any more than walking distance from college dorms" perhaps?) would have considered the tuna too old to serve raw (although this is my first tuna east of the San Francisco Bay, so maybe that's par for the course around here... which makes me shudder). Other fish was... ok at best. But the quality of slicing, construction and presentation of the rolls and nigiri was atrocious. Heck, my all-thumbs, fat-White-guy hands make better sushi. Further, the summer help (? guessing) waitron was way too unpolished/young/unskilled/nearly-incompetent, but nice enough... we put up with that based on previous good experiences... maybe that's all the help you can get around here sometimes? Had it been our first experience, I doubt we'd be back. Now, in O&S's defense (I guess, see previous: Want to like the place) there are two possible issues: One, we did arrive around 9pm.... two... early in the week. We were grudgingly seated, served bad sushi, *even*worse* shumai (seriously, they must have been the scrapings of the bottom of the bowl, as one in particular had so much ginger as to be inedible... maybe a big lump?), suffered bad service and met with the bum's rush when the check came. As to the first possible issue: If you don't want to serve diners who arrive at 9pm, then don't close at 10pm. If your skilled sushi chefs leave or get loaded at 9-9:15, then don't serve sushi at 9:15-9:30. Just close at 9pm. Or have a reduced late-night menu. Or some pride and say, "our good chefs are 'faced... would you like eggrolls?" Better to have diners disappointed that you're closed or limited than angered at the poor output of the those-stuck-waiting-to-the-end kitchen crew. Second: I know, I know, never order fish early in the week, as it's the leftovers from Thursday. But, I have always ignored this rule in sushi joints, as it is their life's blood to serve fish they are proud of, regardless of the day, and/or to have the honor to say, "we're sorry, we're out of maguro, but our saba is fresh". Frankly, if you're willing to send out the tuna we got as acceptable (in anything other than a grilled and sauced side dish), I'm not going to have any faith in your other (some more sensitive) fish. We'll stick with the chinese. Maybe one more sushi attempt during prime time on the weekend... will update if that's good, but then we'll know just what priorities the joint has, won't we?

This visit I dined in but ordered the same thing (shrimp with snow peas, carrots and broccoli). The space is nice but somewhat cramped. The restaurant was mostly empty on a Monday night. Our waiter was short, unfriendly and unpleasant. My entree was served in a cute bamboo steamer basket. The dining in portions are huge. I got two meals out of this visit. Overall, great food but I didn't feel very welcome. I'll stick to carry out.

Got carry out from here last night after a deep hankering for sushi. Gluten free options in Pasadena have been killing us, and sushi is normally way too expensive for too little food. We got the crab rangoon, spicy mussels, the rolls of salmon avacado, spicy tuna, yellowfin and scallion, salmon sashimi, and a hand roll of eel avacado. All of this was $40, which is not bad at all. Everything tasted fresh and no gluten trigger! This will definitely go on our list to check out again. I really wish they delivered, but that's my lazy butt talking. To save some time, here is the menu as they don't really have a website: menupix.com/menudirector…

I can't say enough about service here. Great cook in the kitchen honoring special requests! Great sushi chefs working in the front for all to see! But one cocky waiter neglecting the whole dining room? I can't imagine an easier problem to fix: Fire the old grump waiter who claims he had it all covered.

Bit into a musters ingredient in Pad Thai. When I took the food back to the restaurant the manager refused to give me a refund for a sushi roll we also ordered (we were worried to find surprise ingredients in that too). The manager said he had more than enough money and wasn't concerned about bad reviews. Won't eat there again.

I seem to come here usually when I get my haircut next door and have always been please with the service. Usually just get some sushi to go. On the times I've dined in, service has been pretty good then also. If I had to rate it prior to my last two visits, it would be a 4-4.5 but that has changed. My visit in October was a slight disappointment. I ordered my sushi after my haicut and when I got home, there was no chopsticks, or soy sauce. Was not happy about that but I adapted and overcame. My last visit which was at the beginning of November, I stopped in and placed my order at the counter. It was sushi deluxe, nothing complicated. When I came back I picked up my order and took it home. When I got home and opened up the bag, it wasnt even close to what I ordered. They had put in what I can only assume was some one elses order of sashimi.I was very ddisappointed because I was really looking forward to the sushi. I was going to call them and tell them about the mistake, but after thinking about it, all that would end up happening is me going back to the restaurant, which I really didn't feel like doing after having a long day. It seems to me that service is going down hill.

What is going on with Olive & Sesame? This used to be our go-to place for Asian cuisine. Loved the variety on the menu and the fresh food. However, last night was a completely different experience. The once vibrant fish tank sits dead and dark - really, just get rid of the thing. The restaurant was virtually deserted. The carpets were dirty. I selected a wine from the list, and they didn't have it. They did have one that was $2 more per glass, however. We ordered sushi, drunken noodles and pad thai. The spicy tuna rolls and soft crab were excellent. They received the undivided attention of the sushi chef, who didn't have anything else going on or any other orders to fill. The entrees, however, were not good. The sauce for the drunken noodles was tangy and tasted old. The pad thai tasted off as well. Seemed a little too tart - considering that this was my go-to restaurant for pad thai, I was sorely disappointed. The service was also lacking. Our server kept swiping the soy sauce from our table - I'm not sure where she thought it was going to go, but I had to ask her to bring it back. Wonder if it will still be in business in six months?

Like others have said...the food was quite good. Nice sized portions with plenty of meat. I like that all the chicken is white meat. Hubby enjoyed the General Tso's and I like the Kung Pao Chicken. Good kick of spice. Also got the eggrolls and they were very good. The service was lacking. Stood at the door for a few minutes before anybody came by to seat us. Then attention was scattered. Food was delivered quickly but not much after that.

I don't know why Asian seafood means its going to smell very fishy. It was sort of good but after paying the bill I felt ripped off and nobody could eat the left overs we took home.

The food is great. You definitely will not leave hungry. And the waiters are always quick with refills, which is a big plus for me. I ordered the orange chicken with a side of fried rice. The portions are huge!! The chicken isn't like takeout--it's big and hearty. And you literally get a portion of rice the size of a mountain. Normally I never have to get a to-go box, but I had to here. Excellent sushi as well. I ordered and picked up sushi a few weeks ago. They included plenty of soy sauce and the man at the register was very friendly. Definitely coming back again and again.

The one star is for pathetic service.I decided to give Olive and Sesame a 2nd chance. I ordered carryout during the holiday week of July 4th (because Szechuan Cafe was closed). The sushi and lettuce wraps I ordered were much better than when they first opened. I then decided to dine in with my wife a week later. Very Dissapointing! The service was very poor. Our male server never asked if we wanted drinks of any kind. His first words were are you ready to order after the hostess said something to him (no greeting of any kind). He never checked to see if our meals were ok. His facial expression said he did not want to be there. The hostess was very friendly and did offer water when we sat at the sushi bar. The food was still ok (lettuce wraps, corn & asparagas soup and crab wontons) but nothing to rave about. I think I will stick with the sure thing at Szechuan Cafe. They consistently have great food and great service.Oh well, I tried.

This place is a welcome addition to the local food scene.. If you ever dine around the N/E side of Anne Arundel, you know the area is pretty much a culinary wasteland. The Arundel Mills development provided some chains, but the casual decent ethnic/fusion/bistro/non-suck fare that is common, or at least available, in the rest of the metro area has been conspicuously absent in N/E AA County. Olive&Sesame is a nice variation from that trend. It's slightly more expensive than average, but the quality is high. I had their version of the General Tso's chicken-- their interpretation is nothing like the heavy, sweet, greasy red meat-centric dish you might find at most suburban chinese restaurants, instead featuring flat lightly breaded pieces of white meat in a thin, spicy sauce. Despite my surprise at not getting the greasy goodness I was expected, their versiont works well and goes with the restaurant's healthy-fusion theme. I ate all of it and didn't feel weighted down at all. On a December 2008 visit with family, the service was off-hand and amateur, but the food was very decent, the parking is easy, and the decor is pleasantly modern. Somewhere else, this might only warrant 4 stars, but for Pasadena, a solid 5-stars.

Somewhat discretely located in a suburban shopping mall, Olive & Sesame delivers quality sushi and Asian cuisine that won't break the bank. As we arrived, we were quickly seated in a booth adjacent to the kitchen. East Asian decor filled the tall-ceilinged room in ubiquity; including a fan with blades shaped like leaves. Our waiter, an amiable gentlemen named Jackie Chan, greeted us at our table and poured us water. He gave us ample time to glance over the menu while we decided on a sushi appetizer and main dishes. After deciding on spicy tuna rolls and Sweet and Sour and General Tsao's chicken, respectively, we placed our order. Light conversation about our days followed until our sushi arrived. The tuna was prepared very well. It was not overly mushy, as is common with less expertly prepared rolls. Our main dishes did not disappoint either. As we left, we were wished well by the friendly staff. Overall we enjoyed our experience. Thank you Olive & Sesame!

From the outside this looks like any other strip mall Asian joint...and it is. I was unimpressed with the sushi, however the service was impressive. The waiter brought us the wrong roll, we insisted it was okay. Five minutes later he brought us the correct roll. They get an A for service - but a C on the overall atmosphere and food.

One of my favorite sushi places. They also have a unique and amazing pad thai that I've never had anything quite like it anywhere else. Every dish they do is a huge portion, tasty, and with their own twist. Almost nothing is what you'd expect (besides giant general tso chicken portions.) If you're in the area, it's a must go!

Nice atmosphere; well decorated. The sushi was pretty good. I think Joss in Annapolis has better sushi; the sushi here seemed too Americanized. I highly recommend the Maryland Tempura Roll!

It saddens me to have to write this review. 2 years ago I would have given 4 maybe even 5 stars. Not sure what happened, the food is not as good, neither is the service. Seems like some of the passion has been lost. It's a shame. Please find that again and I'll come back.

The food has always come out hot and delicious. We love the steamed and sushi selections. Location is key here... quick access to Rt 100 and people that drive fast from farther reaches can get to it quickly! I don't go back as often as I want too. I haven't found that balance of quality to price... I am not the cheapest person in the world and I make a decent living... Even though the food is a step above, I find the overall price too high and frequent other venues more often than Olive and Sesame.

Best Sushi!!!! I love this place. I go here at least 2-3 times a month. Sometimes I just say, get me whatever you think is good, because I've had it all. But I would suggest seaweed salad, Caterpillar roll (if you like avocado), Maryland tempura roll, and the pad tai are my favorites. Dinner for two, you are set and full under $50. Big rolls. I spent over $70 at a sushi place in Annapolis(which I will not name) and was not satisfied at the flavor or size of the rolls. Take my word for it, hands down best place to go for a fun date. And if you are young/mature and funny, ask for their special fortune cookies, but don't show your kids, they can be inappropriate. :) Have fun and enjoy.

Here's an interesting concept... Good for you Chinese Cuisine. Olive & Sesame gets its name from the healthy oils in which their food is made and there is definitely a "health" conscious feel running through the menu. This is the third location of the same name, with restaurants also in Towson and Pikesville. All of the locations serve both Chinese and Japanese cuisine including a full sushi bar. The Pasadena location is quite smart looking inside, with granite topped tables, flat screen tv and elegant contemporary feel. Service on the night we went was a little slow on the uptake, but once a server got to our table, we were taken care nicely. We started with the crab shumai and a Salmon/ Avocado Maki Roll. Both were very nice, the sushi being very fresh. Nothing out of the ordinary, but all done very well. For entrees, I had the Veal Mimosa. Really just a variation of Orange Beef, thin slices of Veal are breaded and fried and topped with a spicy orange zest sauce. The veal was extremely tender and while this wasn't the healthiest possible option on the menu, it sure did taste good, with an above average note of spiciness, which I like, My dining partner in crime had the Protein Trio off the Revolutionary Diet section of the menu. Ok, so not the most appetizing descriptor, I know, but the meal was fantastic. I had entree envy. A bamboo steamer basket filled with steamed shrimp, scallops, chicken and vegetables was presented with a bowl of brown rice and a spicy Hunan Garlic Sauce on the side. The sauce had quite the kick! I stole much of it for my own rice. We will definitely go back and explore this menu more. Many other healty temptations on the menu.

Olive and Sesame is an interesting Pasadena experience. I have the feeling that they're going for the 'new age asian/fusion' feel something like The Red Parrot is trying to pull off, but they haven't quite strayed far enough away from the traditional chinese restaurant. That said, because of this attempt it does certainly have a unique hometown feel. The food is pretty good, my girlfriend typically orders the green beans w/ various meat and she's usually pleased w/ the freshness and crisp/not overcooked beans. I typically order the pad thai which is amazing and i love it, although a bit greasy (no more so than normal.) We typically get a roll or 2 of sushi and it's fairly decent. We are still working our way through the sushi menu, but we've tried several of the rolls w/ scallops (our favorite) and so far we've been pleased. All in all, it is a fantastic place that adds a lot of character to the asian dining experience in Pasadena. -1 point for the occasional bad server.

I eat a lot of sushi...constantly on the road and 7 out of 10 times choose sushi for lunch. Olive & Sesame, I must say had amazing sushi. I went with their "crispy spicy tuna roll," "yellowtail & scallion roll," tuna & jalapeno roll," and "white tuna nigiri." Each was so fresh and melted in my mouth. The only thing I was not highly impressed with was the Miso Soup. It was so-so. My previous history with sushi restaurants in general is never go on Mondays. They usually get their shipments in on Monday evenings or Tuesday Mornings. Therefore, Mondays may not be as fresh as other days. This was a Thursday I went, so that could be in part why I had such a great experience compared to the person below who had a complete different opinion. Regardless, I highly recommend giving this place a fair chance. Btw...they have an abundance of rolls to choose from (68 on the menu to be exact-- yes, I'm a dork for counting haha). TRY IT!!!!

This place is miserable. The decor is cliche, they are ALWAYS out of the 1-2 halfway decent wines on the menu, the service is atrocious, and the food is mediocre at best. I keep wanting to like this place, and have been here about 15 times over several months, hoping it will get better, but no. Last time I was here: We waited about 20 minutes to be greeted. Upon trying to place a drink order, I was informed that they were out of my top 3 (out of about 7) choices of wine (and have been literally every time I have tried to order them, which is many times over the course of several months). I finally get my 4th choice. It's not good. After the waitress comes back and manhandles my wine trying to open it, I finally just do it myself. We place orders for appetizers. These come out still frozen--obviously they are not made on site. It takes us about 10 minutes to flag down the waitress to complain. She takes them back and we decide just to proceed to our meal. We place our orders, then wait 30 minutes for our food. During this wait, the staff has decided to start vacuuming, literally bumping into our shoes trying to get under the table. It is an hour and a half before closing at this point. Our meal is...fine, not that the waitress ever came back to check. The martini my friend orders (from the bar, since we couldn't find the waitress) is disgusting. The waitress comes back about halfway through our meal to try to take our plates (our forks are still in hand) and demand that we order dessert. So we do. About 2 minutes later, my friend changes her mind and tries to change her order (of cheesecake). The waitress throws a temper tantrum at us that they might have to put the cheesecake back in the box (!) and essentially berates my friend into sticking with the cheesecake. Dessert is eh at best. The check comes. Our (frozen) appetizer is still on it. We call the waitress's attention to this fact. She claims that we ordered it, and refuses to take it off. The manager supports the decision that we pay for our inedible appetizer, then insists that we move to the bar to finish our dessert because they are trying to clean. No joke. Not "can we take your things to the bar?". "Move your dinner to the bar so that we can clean, even though it is at least 1/2 an hour before closing". At this point I am livid. Normally I am a really good tipper (20+%), but I do believe that the tip should reflect the service. I am obligated to pay for my meal. Anything above and beyond is for a job well (or averagely) done. So I left nothing, with a detailed list as to why. As we are getting ready to leave, the husband comes and stands behind my car as I am trying to back out. The wife comes and bangs on my window (with her ring, no less, like if she had scratched it I would have sued) until I roll it down, at which point she starts DEMANDING that I tip her daughter. The woman is fully screaming at me that I "must tip" despite the atrocious service/meal we received. My friend is so embarrassed that she hands the woman a few dollars (all the cash she had on her) (after I roll my window up, I don't respond to that kind of behavior) and she goes to the passenger door and yanks it open. Then she comes around to my side and demands that I give her even more money because the tip isn't enough. At this point I just start backing up--I wouldn't have hit the guy but he doesn't know that. I just could not believe it. I have never had anything like this happen to me, it's absurd. There is absolutely nothing that could make me go back to this place. The food is simply not worth being treated like that by people who I am trying to give money to. I will never go back, and I hope nobody else does either. This behavior is just unacceptable. I hope this place goes out of business before someone else has a similar experience.
