My family went to restaurant pretty average experience. We ordered Avocado sushi rolls, sesame chicken, and Seafood Salad. The sesame chicken and rolls came out suspiciously fast. Like fast food fast, within 5 minutes of ordering. We all enjoyed sharing the fast food items and it was excellent. Almost wish the experience stopped there. The seafood salad arrived 10 min later. I basically got 2 super jumbo shrimp and nice size lump crab meat over a pedestrian type american salad. Feeling generous and knowing my daughters love shrimp I gave them the 2 shrimp. They both said it tasted funny but didn't think much of it. Well down to our collective last bites my youngest daughter offers me the remaining bite of the U8 shrimp. As the waiter clears are plates and inquires about meal, I almost threw up. Immediately spit out the shrimp into my linen napkin. A second waiter came and I told him I enjoyed the meal until the last bite. The manager came over and she said the shrimp was a little funny and she even tasted the tail. Looked at both my daughters and said it was fine. I then explained I tasted shrimp and it was spoiled. The manager then returned again and agreed the shrimp was bad. Who tastes other peoples food to verify food spoilage? Anyways she was nice and took 6 bucks off the 20 dollar salad. But I dont think id return cause of the rotten shrimp experience.

What an uninspired place.... I get the impression that most of the regular clientele here are well-to-do people, yet somehow believe that the more you pay, the better the food.... That's not the case here. Break your routine people!! The quality of the food is about the same as the $5.50 per pint takeaway near my house.... When did they last update the interior design? The 1970's?? Positives: The Shrimp in the Pan Fried noodles were HUGE! and the Shrimp Toast in the PooPoo platter was nice too. Neutrals: The Shrimp and Broccoli plate was average; a non-event. The Crab Rangoon was as good as my local takeaway, but not better. Negatives: The Peking Duck was overcooked and dry, you can't mask that mistake with sauce.... The Pan Fried noodles were inconsistently cooked; some were dry and crunchy, some were moist and soft. The beef skewers in the Poopoo platter were tough and stringy. The chicken wings in the Poopoo platter were lukewarm, as were the bland egg rolls. I did get an appropriate fortune in my cookie! :-) There's really no compelling reason to return here, with so many delicious places within 10 minutes.

Yum! The food quality is nice! I have been going to Joey Chui's for quite some time now. In that time I have found some equivalent Chinese cuisine, but over time Joey Chui's has been the only one to rise and not fall. They have been consistent for years, and even though I am not really from the area, you will notice that the clientele are!

I used to work for a small and local insurance agency, and we went here for a holiday lunch (I'm thinking this was December 2011). Seats were sticky, food was gross, and service was not so bad, but the plus side is whoever made the drinks was HEAVY with the liquor. Thank goodness, as it helped the food taste better and made me not feel so awkward as I sat with folks I'd prefer not be hanging out with on this personal level. Hmmmmm....maybe the company I was with tainted my whole feel of this place, but I don't recall anything about the experience as being good. If I were going out for this type of food again I'd go to Pikesville and visit Mr. Chan's.

I don't understand this place. Its easily twice as expensive as it should be and the food is awful. We ordered mapo tofu and beieve it or not, it came with carrots, peas, and mushrooms out of a can! I thought I was back in 1970. The sushi was mushy. We left without bringing any leftovers home - - a first. When I got home I had to make myself a salami sandwich to reaffirm my love of food. This place is a rip-off!!!!!

Well, it's been about a year since my last review and I have been lucky enough to have friends who have taken me up for lunch several times. I have not been disappointed once. So, I still don't get the other negative reviews. Never have I encountered anything but friendly staff and, yes, I am still getting my favorite: crispy fish with General Tso's sauce. Their eggrolls are the only ones I have had in this area that are truly fresh and made in house. They have crunchy, chunky veggies (plus white meat chicken and shrimp) inside instead of the mushy nasty prepackaged stuff most places have now. And yes, they are a bit pricier than others, but I am more than willing to pay the difference for food this good. I do have to say that I stopped up once during their Sunday brunch, and while it looked amazng, I do draw the line at paying about $35.00. So, my offer still stands: drive me up for a free lunch--this is my favorite restaurant!!!

Of the 5 Yelp reviews for Joey Chiu's that I've read, 4 were as bad as they could be, dismal and vicious; which is difficult for me to understand. It's not as if the Baltimore region is bursting with terrific Chinese restaurants. Understanding now that I will not have the choice of fun, reasonably priced Chinese restaurants whose huge menus conceal treasures that I had in Philly, I'm just getting used to the fact that there is not a single dim sum restaurant between here and DC. OK one, but it took me 6 months to find it and its selections were palatable though the aisles were not exactly jammed with carts. So I for one am happy to have Joey Chiu's 20 minutes from my place. It is a solid 3 star affair which is just what one would expect from a good Cantonese restaurant in any big city. Bustle, fair prices, good food and service and a great degree of friendly lalation. Restaurants of this type are never meant to survive the scrutiny of finding every dish turned out perfectly. But let's look at what they do well. The whole Peking duck at under $30.00 was as good as I've tasted in Philly and DC and a lot cheaper. The shrimp & lobster sauce sported a half dozen U-13 shrimp, read big and sweet, twice as big as any I've seen in a lifetime of eating this iconic and much maligned once royal dish. Important to me, the hot & sour is balanced and black pepper hot, and the dishes I've tasted satisfy the paradigm for good American Cantonese. Sure the General Tso's Chicken is soggy in spots and a little greasy but if you don't know enough not to order it, suck it up. Joey Chiu's is the perfect place for Sunday dinner, lo mein and spare rib take-out and for that time when you just gotta do Chinese.

Contrary to the other reviewers, I think the food here does tend to be better than you average Chinese place, although I do agree the prices tend to be a bit high. If you are willing to spend a bit extra, this may be worth trying. Further, I always found the wait staff to be quite friendly and helpful.

I ate there a couple of times about 10 years ago and thought it was mediocre. But figured why not give it a shot, since I was in the area. I thought maybe it was sold and no longer a pretentious diner serving what the owners imagined that Americans in Greenspring Valley thought Chinese food was, including Grilled Chicken Salads and various Salmon dishes. Well, much to my chagrin, I ordered a large Hot and Sour Soup and Hunan Shrimp to go, and when it came to over $20 bucks for lunch, I asked are you sure that's right?! The little snooty tween behind the counter informed me that the hot and sour soup I normally pay $3-$5 for during lunch at other places was almost $8 bucks there. But really, I didn't even care about the money part because I was so hungry. But you know what? She was such a bitch that I could not resist saying that I am just going to go somewhere else. Maybe because it looked like the owner(her mother?) was standing right next to her and another customer was waiting for his food also, that I felt it necessary to stand up for others rights as well. I just know that many who have gone there have been mistreated or just paid for meals that were sub par and just never said anything about it because they are just so nasty in there and perhaps they were intimidated by the Richy clientele, but in my humble opinion, there is no excuse for inflated prices for disgusting food!

Went to a meeting last Thursday night. A room in the back was set up, and there were about 30 of us. The staff was very attentive. Food was delivered quickly, and everyone's order was correct. Food was average, fairly priced, and tasted fine. While this is not a "must do" place, it has a nice atmosphere, and good service.

I absolutely adore this place for Sunday Brunch! I can agree with Jonathan T. that the decor is a bit dated and the crowd is older but is that so bad? Decor reminds me of a 1970s retro feel. and an older crowd is also a quiet one. So for a peaceful and pleasant brunch WHY NOT?! On to the food. Absolutely delicious. A great variety of Chinese and American fare. Made to order Omelete and waffle station. Bottomless mimosa and bloody marys included. And wait staff was attentive.

We came here with my Wife and I and a handful of other friends for Sunday Brunch and showed up at 11 when they opened. We were seated quite quickly and was surprised by how attentive the wait staff was. But that quickly changed, after about an hour maybe slightly longer the staff disappeared completely for the most part. The decor is very outdated and the lighting was very very dark. Some of the food was very good like the lox and the pastries a few other things not worth mentioning. But all the food that was suppose to be hot was ice cold with the exception of the omelets and belgium waffles that are made to order. The bacon was so disappointing, it was so hard you could break your teeth if you weren't careful. The Chinese Food was absolutely horrible overcooked and lacked any actual flavor. My Wife also found a blonde hair in a her food and in a few of the buffet dishes. Can't say we will ever come here again.

My family and I eat out all the time, and we are used to the extremes of service - wonderful and plain obnoxious, but this place takes first prize with rude and horrible staff, hence, 1 stars. Actually it should have 0, but this site won't allow that We arrived as a large party (N = 11) on Christmas Eve having made a reservation two weeks prior. We were told our table wasn't ready and to wait by the bar. We made our way to the bar, only to have the female bartender yell at us that we weren't allowed to have children any where near the bar area. My 81 year old mother asked where we could sit, and the bartender continued to scream, over the heads of numerous patrons "I don't care where you sit, but not here and you can't take my bar stools!!! Kids are not allowed by the bar, you can't sit here, you can't be anywhere near here!" We weren't touching her bar stools. I had had enough of her yelling at my family and my mother so I told her she was one of the rudest employees I had ever come across. This bartender continued to barrate my family in front of everyone. So I went to the manager and explained that there wasn't anywhere for my mother to sit, we couldn't stand by the bar, and his bartender was extremely rude. He simply looked at me. We ended up leaving, taking our business elsewhere. I didn't realize this place was making people physically ill until I saw the reviews here, so some guardian angel must have been looking out for us. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE....either that or bring your thick skin and some Pepto.

We were completely ignored our entire meal. Probably should have left when we had to wait 25 minutes to place our orders. The wonton soup had a hair in it. Sesame chicken was decent, lo mein was bland and sweet and sour chicken tasted like cough syrup. Go to The Orient....much better food and service!!

My soup was putrid. My entree had a hair. And sand. My friend's duck was ropy and stiff. My rice was room temp, gristly and weird. My other friend's shrimp tasted like chemicals. Specifically like chlorine in a swimming pool. The service was bizarre. And I quote: "Some people prefer to wait until after their appetizers (and until hell freezes over) before ordering their main course." (Parentheses mine.) At the end of our meal, we were asked how everything was. Given that our plates went mostly untouched, they had some clues to work with. They sent over the manager. She said, "That is how it's supposed to be." We said, "It must be a bad night for you." She replied, "No, it's a bad night for YOU." P.S. The WORST review for you.

My favorite for carry out, always. Joey's has great service when dining in and I enjoy the sushi very much, too :) always fresh, and consistent.

Food is amazing. Staff is good. Owners are cool. The "regulars" at the bar are annoying and are my only complaint. I deal with it and they're harmless just whiney stereotypical and annoying as all get out. Overall two thumbs up.

I'll admit this place is pricey compared to other Chinese restaurants but honestly worth the extra $$ for real white meat in their chx dishes (not those huge, gristly pieces). Sesame chx, veggie fried rice and their hot & sour soup are consistently well prepared. JC is our go-to for carry out!!

  • Meepa M.

We only order carry out from here so that's all I can speak of. This place is the best carry-out chinese we have found. And we have tried many other places. If there are others that are better in the area, I want to know where. We don't order anything exciting, just egg rolls, wonton soup, fried rice. Maybe some sweet and sour chicken. The basics. And they get those right.

I get the impression that if you're a regular here they treat you super-nice. If you're not a regular, you'll be transported back to your friend's mother's dining room (the one who didn't want you coming to dinner in the first place), circa 1988: lots of brass, mirrors, hunter green and three foot tall floral arrangements. It smelled like a band-aid for some odd and inexplicable reason. The food was on the incredibly sweet meat-candy side of the spectrum; not spicy in the least. I'd expect a pepper or two in Orange beef, but there was none to be found. Just meat and sugar. Not "bad" food. Just...so weirdly sweet. Could only eat a few bites. The thing I couldn't get over though, were the bowls and bowls of fried noodles already on the tables when we arrived..just bowls of them- sitting aside the carefully accordion-folded napkins. So weird.

The only reason this place gets two stars is because of the service. When you walk in, Joey Chiu's is the typical Chinese trying to be classy but sort of failing type of joint. An extremely friendly hosts comes to seat you, and my guest and I were lucky enough to get a window seat. Seeing as it was for a late lunch on a Friday, the place was pretty empty, with most people finishing their meals. A busser came over right away to fill our glasses with water, followed by the waiter to come take our drink order. I'm sure I'm not the only person to always be confused by a place that serves Chinese and sushi, but I'm always willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Joey Chiu's claims to have some of Baltimore's best sushi. Looking over the menu, I saw the typical selection of Chinese fare, and some unimpressive sushi roll selection, but it did have combos. I expected the pricing to be outrageous, seeing the restaurant's location in Green Spring Station, but it didn't SEEM too expensive. I didn't want a full-blown meal, so I settled on the veggie sushi combo ($12), and my guest settled on the Greenspring Station sushi combo. When our food arrived, I realized that this place IS definitely overpriced. My "veggie sushi" platter came with three rolls: asparagus, avocado, and cucumber. I've definitely had a way better selection at nearby sushi places, and was a bit disappointed at the overpriced platter sitting in front of me. My guest's platter came with one "special" roll, one tuna roll, and one california roll. All in all, the service was great, but the food was mediocre. I will probably not be coming here again.

The food would be fine if this was just a regular, cheap chinese take-out place. But it's not. The food here is much pricier but not really better quality. The restaurant IS pretty (in a 1980s decor kind of way) and the staff have always been extremely nice and polite, but it's just not somewhere I'm terribly impressed with. Luckily, they're in the middle of Greenspring Valley so there's not much competition with Tarks being the only other full-service restaurant nearby . If you want mediocre Chinese food in a nice setting, and you're willing to pay a bit extra, this could be a winner for you.

Joey Chiu's is obviously some sort of secret club. It's the only way I can explain the "service" my wife and I received there. We arrived relatively early for dinner (around 6pm) and the place was packed. We were seated immediately at a gigantic round table in the middle of the restaurant, smack-dab in the path of every passing waiter, incontinent guest, and stumbling toddler. We huddled together on one side of the table and tried to stay out of everyone's way, on display as if we were the centerpiece of some comic opera. Eventually (probably 10 minutes after we were seated) a waitress stopped by (obviously on her way to more important business) and sulkily took our drink orders. Miraculously our drinks arrived about 5 minutes later and we settled in to read the menus as the scions of Greenspring Valley noshed noisily around us and the wait staff bustled by. And bustled. And bustled. After about 15 minutes we began to get nervous. If nothing else our drinks were drained and we were ready for another (if for no other reason than to calm our jangling nerves). No waiter. 10 more minutes passed and we watched our server zoom past with food and drink for others, smiling as she dished up food to everyone else but us. After about a half an hour we began to get pretty pissed. My wife (who's a little more forceful than I when it comes to requesting service) stuck out her hand as the waitress passed by in a blur for the 50th time and managed to get her to stop. She initially frowned at us (apparently some horse owner was going to starve to death unless she zipped onward) but as we mentioned to her that we'd been sitting for 30 minutes and would like to order, she looked at us and laughed...then zipped away. Laughed? Yup. Laughed. The waitress at this overpriced, overrated, overstuffed, and overdecorated Chinese restaurant actually LAUGHED at us when we politely asked if we could order after sitting for 30 minutes. We threw down some money (I'm sure it wasn't enough given the clientele and the attitude) to cover our drinks and walked out, never to return again. The upside: time has turned this into a funny story rather than a rage-inducing rant. Joey Chiu: F#*K You.

A generous 3 stars because of service and very friendly staff of waiters...but "0" stars for food...it was nothing special and very bland. Thought the ribs were too dried out and tough, thought some of the other dishes were also over cooked. It tasted more like left over Chinese food that I heat up the next day. Nothing seemed fresh.

Great place for chinese food. Very chic restrurant with a bar.The Mai Tais are AMAZING!!!! All you need is one lol The beef skewers are delicious and so is the sushi. The sushi is fresh and always keeps you wanting more. I think they have a Sunday brunch also. You should definetly check this place out. Joey Chui also comes around and speak to everyone there. Very nice and friendly. You wont be disappointed.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
