Not going to get better sushi in Hagerstown. I've been here a bunch of times, and have always had high quality fish, in a variety of traditional and creative new rolls and pieces. Service has been great every time. As far as the price goes, it is a on the expensive side, as sushi usually is. I'm always a little skeptical of cheap sushi. However, there are a variety of rolls on the menu for $4 or $5. The special rolls are the ones that can drive your bill up, but they are well worth the price, and are usually a larger portion (8-10 pieces). All in all, I've never left Sakura disappointed.

Worst sushi I ever had. I ordered the Alaskan roll and lobster roll. Couldn't even finish it.

Always a great time and great food!! A little pricey but worth it!!!! The hibachi is great!!! Not a big sushi fan but the things I did dare to try were good. This is definitely a must try place if you are in the area.

First and for most the sushi here is really good, but what keeps it from a five star rating is the price. Sakura would be consider high end for Frederick County, and maybe expected average price for Montgomery County, but for Washington County, it is price way beyond what it should cost. I find this place to be more expensive than comparable sushi joins in Frederick and Rockville. Once getting past the price point the food is very good. I ordered my usual, an order of Philli rolls, an order of salmon skin rolls and an order or shrimp tempura rolls. All three cost about twenty-one dollars. (I have a place in Bethesda that I prefer that costs twenty and that includes an order of California rolls added to the above) Again the food is great, and the atmosphere is pleasant tough a tad loud, I would eat here again if in the neighborhood with friends, but I won't make an extra effort to spend extra money for sushi that can be purchased for less, equal quality and a quieter environment than a sports bar.

Love the sushi here. Rolls are tasty fresh and don't fall apart. Service is always good. Favorites are dancing dragon, dynamite, red and hot and mermaid. Go here for special rolls.

My boyfriend and I went here for my birthday a couple weeks ago. Plan on going in again tonight. The sushi was good and the prices were better than i had expected. Although the service was a little strange (wound up having two different people serving us) we got four rolls and walked out with a 30 dollar bill, and that was with getting one of the special rolls as well. I have had expensive sub par sushi before, and this place definitely does not fit that bill.

My family has eaten there twice, both times hibachi style. Lunch was great. The chef used a little more garlic than usual in the fried rice but I like garlic so all was well and I thought the prices at lunchtime were very reasonable. We decided to try it again at dinner and the experience wasn't as good. Also, instead of throwing shrimp like most Japanese steakhouses, the chef squirted saki (?) into the adults' mouths from a plastic bottle during our second visit. I didn't particularly like that given that our 7 and 9 year old children were at the table.

I and my family have eaten here many times over the last 7 years. We compare all the sushi we eat every where by this restaurant. To date we have ate at 164 Japanese/Sushi places. Few are better and many are not as good! Service is OK, since we are regulars and recognized, I know we get good service. Never tried the hibachi as I have one in my house and cook hibachi style all the time. Sushi however, is great!! Always been very pleased. Try the "Summer Breeze" roll, it is worth every $$!

A great place for sushi and Japanese food. Prices are a little high, but the service is good and the food is excellent. There is also a section for "hibachi-style" or "Teppanyaki" cooking where they cook the food right in front of you. I haven't tried that but I'm sure it's also good.

My favorite place in Hagerstown for sushi. Great lunch special - very good price for the amount of food you get. The spicy crab and shrimp Gyoza are delicious!

Sakura is great for their Sunday sushi and grill buffet. Super fresh sushi that's basically crab based, but still very yum. We've been here a good many times. It's really nice when they seat you at your own table, but not so nice when they seat you at the grill, super close to other guests. For around $15 a person it's a great deal!!

    (3)
  • Angela C.

The best aspect is their Sunday buffet. For $14.50 you get the hibachi, soup, shrimp and vegi tempura, sushi, and cheesecake. The only drawbacks of it are that it opens at noon and if you get there at 12:05 up until around 1:30 there can be a long wait to get thru the hibachi line and sometimes they are slow to refill the sushi bar. If you like to order off the menu, their mermaid roll is pricy $16 but it is amazing! We have enjoyed all of the rolls we have tried. The staff is friendly and they are always prompt to fill our drinks. It would have been a five star, but the prices are a tad high.

first of all, the food here is excellent. It's as good food-wise as Nikko, which is located nearby....The only way Nikko edges it out, I think, is in ambience. At Sakura, there are christmas-type lights up (???) and utility sinks in plain view. Still nice but just not as nice as Nikko's in terms of how it looks. However, if Nikko is closed we don't have any problem going here because the food, in my experience, is just as good.

Went on a tuesday night 1/2 hour before close. 1st words to us was "we are closing soon." They made no effort to seat us .we stood there for a moment then decided to take our busness elsewhere. I will not return House of Kobe is worth the short drive across town and their service is excellent

We went there on 3/6 at 9:20pm (they close at 10pm) as soon as we walked in the door, the blonde girl said "we are closing soon", it was very apparent that they did not want our business we went to Ruby Tuesday, who were more than happy to serve us

The miso soup: Perfect size serving very good flavor. The salad: Dressing just right consistency and right amount. Salad good size and relatively fresh. American ingredients though. Would like to see maybe some traditional ingredients. The house vegetable roll was decent although could have suffered more filling and again domestic ingredients. Tomato? It was good nonetheless. The sweet potato tempura roll was undercooked though good flavor. The sunshine roll for me was the best. Cucumber and avocado with a sliver of lemon. Bright, fresh and satisfying. Overall the meal was good though my complaint as a vegetarian is that we never receive any extras from the chefs such as seaweed salad, edamame, etc. also the rolls are much smaller than House of Kobe. I'm giving three stars because the flavors whet good despite the lack of imaginative ingredients and small portions.

The only reason I come to Sakura is for the sushi, because it is so fresh and wonderfully crafted. Everytime I have ordered takeout, they never miss a beat which is nice as well. I have been coming here for years. I personally enjoy their hibachi but know many that do not prefer it. My favorite roll is the spring Jamie roll. The seafood salad is amazing as well. I think I have eaten here so much that now I'm sushi-ed out but it's still a great favorite around the area.

Hagerstown and sushi wouldn't seem to go together, but Sakura does a satisfactory job at delivering. I ordered takeout: three rolls (spicy tuna, cucumber, and Spicy Girl). I don't why I order the special rolls. I'm always under-impressed and this was no exception. The rolls were beautifully presented, cut with precision, nearly machine-like. The spicy tuna roll wasn't made from tuna slices but, rather, ground up tuna, or, most likely, tuna scrape. It was good, mind you, but it didn't have me drooling. The Spicy Girl roll was a spicy tuna roll with fish eggs on top. I know, a delicacy. I wasn't overly impressed. Total cost for three rolls: $20.50, not counting 6% tax. Would I return? Yes. With a caveat: If I don't find another sushi joint that sparks me.

I don't like downgrading, but I do have an obligation to warn my fellow sushi-mates. DEFINITELY come here for the lunch specials. Don't come here for the buffet. The buffet is about $13.95, and it is a steal, considering you get all the servings of hibachi (chicken, beef, salmon), sushi, tempura, miso soup salad, fruit, some weird squares of cheesecake you want. However, I didn't like the fact I couldn't order off the menu without it being dinner price. Why would I eat sushi for dinner price at 2 pm? The buffet selection is definitely lacking. I was dreaming of eel & avocado and yellowtail rolls, but their buffet (I've been twice, ugh, shame on me), and they only have: spicy tuna crunch, california roll, tempura roll (either shrimp or fish), crab roll, and some fried california roll. Limited selection, that's for sure. I give a big DOWNGRADE for the buffet in terms of sushi. But their lunch specials are still amazing. $10 for 3 rolls plus soup and salad ($7 for those faint at heart and can eat only 2 rolls)? Come on! At least have that option on Sunday!

Decent food, served haphazardly. While staff was pleasant, service was horrendous. Various wait staff visited our table to ask the same questions, as if nobody was sure whose table this was. Soup and salad were served simultaneously. One of us received an entree much earlier than the other (but, the previously overlooked appetizer appeared during this interval, somewhat alleviating the awkward disparity). Even with these problems, service seemed rushed. The food was reasonably good (by local standards, at least), but hibachi filet mignon was overly salty. We've been here several times before, with mixed results. If management can find a way to make the dining experience more consistent and relaxed, this could be worth recommending as a decent alternative in Hagerstown. As things stand now, though, I'd suggest making the drive to better choices in Frederick, Shepherdstown, or various locations in Montgomery County. If you want to enjoy this restaurant, the sushi bar may be a good place to start.

Enjoyed a terrific dinner this past Christmas night. Service was excellent but then again the restaurant was nearly empty. The place has two sides, one a typical Asian restaurant offering Japanese cuisine and sushi. The other half is a room filled with six teppanyaki griddles, each seating some eight to ten people. The obvious comparison is with Benihana. In that, Sakura wins hands down. Sakura's portions are larger and just plain tastier. Plus, the cooks focus more on the cooking and less on silly tricks. Yes, they'll make a volcano out of stacked rings of onion but they don't flip eggs into their hats or shrimp into their shirt pockets (skills which seem to be harder to master judging by my last few visits to Benihana). Our group enjoyed salmon, beef and chicken along with usual accompaniments including miso soup, salad with ginger dressing, fried rice and shrimp. One of our party (vegetarian) ordered the udon soup and pronounced it quite good. A solid winner of a restaurant. Too bad they call their teppans "hibachi". I guess educating people is harder than just saying, "why yes, that is what they are." Doesn't matter, come for the food.

have been here a few times, never great but after this past experience i wont be coming back. went on a friday night with my husband, daughter, and parents. they were busy and we were beyond patient. the waitress took awhile to come over to take our orders and was rude in the process. we waited awhile longer and she brought us our salad, then said "i will bring your soup right away." 25 minutes later no soup.... we tried to flag her down, or get her attention and she ignored us. people who came in after us received their soup, from her. so in total we sat for 50 minutes and only received salad. at that point we got up and left. the rudeness, avoidance, and lack of customer service is beyond disappointing. nothing like going out to celebrate only to have it turn into a nightmare. i wouldnt bother going here if you actually want to eat anything other then salad.

The service is horrible; lets start there. Its really hard to get past that. But, the food was average; not great, but not bad. I ordered the chicken hibachi with a edamame appetizer. The dinner chicken hibachi comes with rice, salad, clear soup and 3 pieces of shrimp. So the value is pretty good; if you want all that other stuff. But when I told the waitress; and that term should be used loosely, that I can't have shrimp she said it comes with shrimp. I told her I can't eat shrimp and she looked at me like; that's not my problem. I asked if I could have something else and she said it came with shrimp. It was like Abbott and Costello; who's on First? So I asked her to leave the shrimp off. I ordered a Coke and she said no Coke; would I like a Pepsi; which was really hard to understand. I've been to Tokyo Japan and Hagerstown Maryland is no Tokyo Japan. Pepsi was diet, had to ask for another Pessi; yes that's how I meant to spell it. I said it was diet and I wanted a regular Pepsi; oh ok. By this time I'm ready to leave, but I'm hungary. Then i remembered there was a choice of 3 different kinds of rice; fried, white and something else. So i had to flag her down to ask for white rice. My salad and soup were brought out. Both were good. Tried eating my salad with my chop sticks and it just wasn't working. It's been a while since I used chop sticks. So I stabbed my salad with my chop sticks until she came around again so I could ask for a fork. The edamame was average; ever have the edamame at Roy's? Mmmmmmm good, but thats a different review. Chicken came out and like I said it was Ok, a little tough and the veggies were really soggy. Based on talking to a colleague who went there and his service was even worse. He went when it busy and it took an hour to get his food; not because the kitchen was slow either. So I won't be returning. Prices were a little high for the whole package. Next time I'll try Nikko Japanese Steak and Seafood up the street.

A very classy sushi joint. They have enlarged their digs since the first time I tried it. The sushi was fresh and arranged beautifully on the plate. I had rolls and sashimi. I'd give them five stars if they didn't serve drinks right out of soda cans. That always turns me off. 10/21/07 News Flash, the soda cans are gone! We stopped here yesterday for an early dinner and what a pleasant surprise. I have to give Sakura their fifth star as a complete remodel has occurred and the place is beautiful. I was expecting drinks to be served in soda cans, but was pleasantly surprised to see that that nasty practice is a thing of the past. The service was outstanding and the sushi divine. Even the two non-sushi eater were pleased with their hibachi dinners, one beef and one chicken... and there was plenty. My daughter, who is used to nice sushi places in Baltimore thought it was tops.

Not bad. A little on the pricey side for the area. And one of my perennial pet peeves is getting a can of soda in a "nicer" restaurant, which means you ain't gettin no refills. at least not for free. nothing wrong with it, but I like the other sushi place in town better - ummm, house of kobe, i think. i'm just partial - one of the waitresses is from the town i used to live in.

I have frequented this restaurant many times as I do all asian retaurants in Hagerstown. I have put up with the rude host at the desk (I believe his name is David) before, but no longer. The third waiter we had finally stopped at our table to take our refill order (Sake and Kirin) only after we had finished eating. Then to add insult to injury our bill arrived with our second round, what is worse is the fact that there was still plates of food on the table, as well as our soup bowls were still stacked on the table from the first course. The absolute worst part of this experience is not even two minutes after the bill arrived the host came over to our table and asked us to hurry and pay our bill because people were waiting for our table. I guess I should thank him for making Nikko the easy choice!
