Below average. Bland food. Even the salsa lacks substance. Taco shells were the cheap store-bought kind. Beans were most certainly from a can and briefly warmed. Good size portions. Cheap prices. Good economical value if you can get past the poor quality. You get what you pay for, I guess. Atmosphere is comfortable with TVs displaying a Spanish soap opera. Service was polite and decent, though not very sociable - I also never got a refill on my water despite being there for an hour. All in all, we didn't regret coming, but we could have done better finding a place to eat in this area.

My family loves all manner of latino cuisine and especially favor the out of the way, simple places. We were so excited, based on all the other reviews, to discover a new favorite. But what a disappointment! Although the kids' plates looked promising, I knew we were in for a mediocre meal when my husband's and my dishes, both on the "house specialities" list, looked exactly the same. Refried beans and guacamole were almost certainly not homemade. The service was great, though. But the food - what a bummer!

Very cute! Very filling. There's sooo much food that comes out with each entree but was it good! It's really close to work and it's cheap!

This place is great, very small but the food is delicious. I had the chicken enchiladas and my wife had the pupusas. Great homemade cooking, and friendly staff. Would definitely come back.

Cozy little place. Authentic and tasty food. Their pupusas are pretty good. I love El Savadoran food. I haven't ordered from them recently but used to be a loyal customer a few years back. Wait staff were, eh, okay but I loved the local family feel the restaurant exuded.

A neighborhood staple, well-loved by locals. Yes, it's kind of out of the way but the drive is worth it. Cheap platters of your Mexican favorites (although I think it is actually owned by an El Salvadorian family). I usually get the enchilada platter that comes with beans and rice for around $7. Chimichangas are great too. The interior is modestly decorated, but you definitely come for the food!

i want to give it 3 1/2 stars . Acajutla is a strip mall mexican joint. it is small , usually quiet, with good service, good prices, large servings, of basic, sometimes a bit bland, american type mexican foods. I have never had a great meal, but i have never had a bad meal either. Its worth a try if you are close by and hungry for mexican. Its not the place to have your anniversary dinner.

Food quality has definately gone down. The wait staff is awful. The last time I was there one of the waitresses over charged me then didn't bring me back my change. When I asked her where my change was she told me she assumed it was her tip.

Yeah it's that good for Mexican food in the DMV area. Now if this was in California or Texas maybe it's a 4, but in Maryland it's a for sure 5 star place

Yesterday after leaving the doctors, I decided to pay this restaurant another visit and I was extremely disappointed. Writing this review hurts but a lot has changed over the years. I decided to visit this restaurant for some good soup. I have been sick for almost two weeks and I thought, "why not try this old place out!". I am aware of the small bowls but regardless of the bowl sizes.. The soup is pretty delicious. I arrived with my boyfriend and there was no one to be found, not even in the bar area. We waited a couple minutes and then a lady came to the bar area and noticed that we had been waiting. She called for another waitress to come up front but she then decided to seat us. She handed us menus and then walked away. As we were browsing through the menu, I noticed that one of the pages had wet tomato salsa and water all over the menu. I decided to let it go and keep looking because I was super excited to eat. As I kept turning, two other pages were all covered in tomato salsa. After that, I was extremely disgusted and upset. The restaurant was slow and we were their only customers; the waitress should have wiped down the menus at least. I waitressed for almost three years and never have I ever left a menu dirty. It's unacceptable and it takes away the customers appetite. All in all, I left with no appetite and my hands covered in tomato salsa. I feel terrible for writing this bad review but it's time that the staff steps it up and stops the chitter chatter in the kitchen area. They should be paying attention to the customers and keeping the place clean. I am giving them *1 star because the food has been delicious in the past. As far as the customer service.... Terrible. Menus? Even worse. Smh.

Setting is very informal but clean. We arrived at 11:10 and they closed at 11:40. We were seated and tended to right away. We ordered our food and it came out about 15 minutes later piping hot. Food was great. I would definitely go back and take some friends with me.

Whenever I'm trying out a new Mexican joint (yes, in Chicago we say "joint"), I always keep my order basic...perhaps a quesadilla or something anyone can make. Despite having ordered some "easy" dishes, they still made me wish I had not stopped here. There is nothing on the menu with ground beef and they use a sauce in which the contents are a bit of a mystery. That, combined with some less than tasty meals leaves me wishing I had avoided this place.

Truly the best Mexican food in the entire DC area. Try the twin burrito lunch special, so unique yet still traditional. The blending of the different sauces they use is just terrific. So many Mexican places are all the same, but this place serves delicious food that you honestly can't get anywhere else. I travel here for business and eating here is always my favorite part of the trip! Salsa can be a little watery so if you like thick salsa you won't like it, but I do enjoy its flavor and the hearty onions. Food served quickly, but service can be a bit slow, just more that they are subdued - no high pressure. I could go on and on....just go there you won't regret it.

I've been here only once. We were greeted promptly. Decor was pretty authentic, hand painted advertisements on the speckled walls. It was cold, wished they'd have turned on the heat. Food wasn't super quick but it wasn't slow either. There was only one other table seated though. Onto the food, the chips and salsa were okay. The salsa was good but the chips were overdone. My chicken plate (Pollo Guanaco) was decent, nothing special. The tortillas are handmade and are charged separately, $0.50 each. My husband had tacos and cleaned his plate. Prices aren't too high but aren't cheap either. Prices are very close to Guapos. I am willing to give this place another try. Acajutla is a seaport and municipality Sonsonate Department in El Salvador.

What a lucky find! I stopped in this shopping plaza and just decided to check this place out. The dining area was very neat and clean, same for the restrooms. The service was great and the food was terrific! Highly recommend trying this restaurant!

I go to this place at least twice a month to get my pupusa fix. Small, family run business that serves Mexican/El Salvadorian dishes. Nice size portions for cheap. I haven't had anything there yet that I didn't like. The decor isn't all that great but the service makes up for it. Must try: Yuca con chicharron, pupusas, and their enchilades. Oh, and they also serve breakfast!

A customer may have got food poisoning from this restaraunt. They ate the beef burrito at noon. Symptoms started at 6pm and they were hospitalized. I called the restaraunt to give them a heads up for other customers. All i wanted to hear was "We are sorry to hear that. We will double check our food and procedures just in case." I never blamed the restaraunt as I know you can not pin-point 100% where one got food poisining from. I nicely informed them. They did not speak english very well and did not apologize or say they will double check the food.

My husband and I love this place. We've been here over a dozen times and have never been disappointed. Everything is great here and the people are friendly and attentive as well. Pollo Acajutla is my fave entree: the chipotle sauce they put on the chicken is the best thing I've ever tasted in my life. I wish I could buy it by the gallon I'd put it on everything. Chicken tacos, taco salad, the rice and beans, margaritas- all awesome. Very reasonable priced too.

I haven't had a bad experience yet. I like how it is almost always quiet, and your food usually is out in about 10 minutes. If I got a bad plate of food at Acajutla, I would blame the farmer before the chef. May favorites include the chicken enchiladas, plantains, chimichangas, and the beans.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
