I'd return for the beer but little else. Doener Bistros are common in Germany but usually run by Turkish owners. We had the Doener Box (beef) and sandwich (mixed). The fries at the top of the box were tasty. Those at the bottom were soggy. An interesting concept but way too much sauce overwhelming everything else. I liked the bench seating but not enough German décor otherwise to reach Gemutlich. A great concept that I think could do very well but falls short on delivery. I hope they survive and add more western German flavor and comfort. If so, we'll return.

The potato pancakes are really good, but everything else is just so-so. If you're going to go, I would eat the schnitzel sandwich which is good. Beer selection is great. Doner is not so great, the slaw on it is not the best and the bread doesn't seem to go well with the ingredients (bread would be better to eat on its own than use as a sandwich bread). My main complaint is that they don't seem to be open during their marked hours--I have been there multiple times an hour before closing and they have been closed already. However, the staff is extremely nice and accommodating when they are open--polite and fast service.

I was very sad to see Five Guys leave Carroll Creek, but was thrilled when I heard Doner Bistro was moving in since we used to drive to the Leesburg location. I love this place so much! I always get a beer and a Doner, but I've also tried the currywurst, bretzel, and potato pancakes too. All are good. I've been going at least every couple of weeks since they opened. Everyone I've encountered working there was friendly.

Places like this are all over the place in Germany and this one hit the spot. I think its a perfect fit on the creek in Frederick. The food and atmosphere were great! Be prepared to belly up with your neighbors.

  • Mike B.

This place was extremely tasty. I can't quite figure out what they're selling here. It's "German food" but with falafels and gyro sandwiches. The German sausage is served in a strange mix of ketchup and chili powder. I'm not an expert on German food, but I'm pretty sure this is some strange fusion experiment. In any case it's delicious. The prices are cheap. And they have all sorts of beers. Overall an amazing place to grab a bite to eat.

  • Steve R.

I've wanted to try this place for a while but it wasn't until family was visiting that we made it a reality. Great quality wurst, brot und bier! Very polite and fast service with outdoor seating on the creek. We will be coming back!

I've been on the lookout for a "true" Doner Sandwich, ever since I returned from 3 years in Germany back in 2009. This is the closest thing I have found (other than Army City Gyro in Fayetteville, NC...but honestly, who wants to drive 6 hours for a sandwich? Maybe if it is a really good one..) So, Doner Bistro, takes the typical Doner Sandwich and adds some other more "German" options. I must note that this is not something I typically saw in Germany. You had your Doner Stands that sold Doners and your ImbisStubes which sold the brat/curry-wursts and schnitzel sandwiches. I had a Doner sandwich (they need to offer cheese to make it more authentic) that tasted delicious. Plus they had Spezi on tap and in the can, something all children would love and appreciate,

  • Hannah L.

One of my new favorites in Frederick! I always get a chicken doner, which consists of a generous portion of chicken (sliced off the spit and seasoned fantastically) served in a huge piece of bread (maybe ciabatta??) with a ton of flavorful toppings - cabbage, tzatziki, marinated tomatoes, lettuce, etc. It's so delicious that I don't deviate from this standard much, but everything looks good. I've had the doner salad before and it's good, but of course the bread makes it much better. If you do go for the salad, I would recommend putting curry powder on it (available near the drinks)...it really takes it up a notch. Nice selection of German beers available and definitely festive Oktoberfest decor. The bathroom is a little strange (all the lights are red...) but I guess it goes with the theme!

  • Mary B.

Yeah. This place is pretty darn amazing. German + Turkish food = delicious. The felafel sandwich, aside from being as big as my head, was also delicious. For the price, it just can't be beat. Yes, it's super messy, so maybe not first date material, but oh so good. The tzaziki sauce is so yummy. I also love all their German beer on tap, as well as the German soda in the fountain machine. (you also have "normal" fountain soda options, too) While the interior of Doner is nice, you just have to sit outside if the weather is nice. Big old benches and umbrellas with a great view of Carroll Creek. You can sit with a bunch of friends and people watch. It gets super crowded on the weekends, but if you can snag a space, get it. It's just such a great location. So happy to have Doner Bistro here in Frederick!

  • Brittany S.

Very unique little place. The service was great. Def coming back to try everything on the menu. The donër box is pretty awesome. Only thing I would suggest is a little more salt, but that could be just to my tastings. Outdoor and indoor seating. Great selection of beers. Portions were filling!

  • Angela S.

I guess this is the meat-eater's alternative to That Hummus Place. I had the falafel salad. Not too impressed. The falafel was average, but the tzatziki sauce was bland, and oddly thick. Vegetarians should keep walking to the place I mentioned earlier. I tried some bun and mustard and those were good, but the fries weren't.

  • Jonny B.

I love this place. I lived in Germany for about 3 years during high school, and it brings me back. Döner Bistro serves up German street food with a Turkish influence, and it's darn good and really tasty. The currywurst (something I do not remember in northern West Germany), is really delicious. The headliner item, the Döner, is also great--reminds you a bit of a gyro, although the bread is a bit crunchier. The cabbage slaw they put on top lends a nice tang--be sure to get the sauce. The only thing I don't like about going here for lunch during the week is that I can't buy a beer and go back to work! The beer selection is great, though, with a few German staples on tap and more available in bottles. It's great comfort food, although they do have falafel Döners and salads for those who want something a bit lighter. Staff has always been friendly, and they use the Belly app so you can accumulate rewards. Did I mention I love this place? It's a welcome addition to Frederick, giving us something we can't get anywhere else around here.

3.5 stars. Great little place in a perfect location. The menu isn't very big but the food is pretty good and there's a nice selection if beer. We got the doner sandwich and falafel salad with good taziki sauce. Both were good but the salad had some old discolored leaves which was gross. I also though that they skimped on the falafel as they were very small in size. Really enjoyed the location and would come back and try a few other things.

Definitely dig the German vibe at this place. Yummy Döner, and nice German beer selection. Simple menu hits the spot perfectly!

  • Lorena B.

The food was definitely good and the portions were generous. The falafel sandwich was huge! It's served with toasted ciabatta bread instead of pita which adds even more of a crunch- me likey! I also how they balance the sweetness of the tzaziki with red pepper flakes. The pommes were very, very good! Hard to finish them when that huge falafel sandwich but at least I had a snack for later. They have ketchup and vinegar for dipping. The bite of JV's veal schnitzel sandwich was pretty good too. While the food came out fairly quickly, it takes awhile to order due to them only having one register, and because customers seem to have a lot of questions about the German Turkish fusion menu. Btw, you can't take your beer outside pending their liquor license approval. Great addition to downtown Frederick!

  • Eric N.

Went here as I love German food. The food, at least the schnitzel and brats are a no go. Didn't care for either of my lunch selections. Great location with outdoor seating, and an awesome beer selection, with many on tap. Go to drink and have a good time.

  • Dave S.

Wonderful German atmosphere. Signature sandwich is the Doner, which is kind of like a gyro. It comes either chicken or beef & tastes wonderful! Large selection of beers from Germany. The soft pretzel is perfect too. Bratwurst is available, but I did not try one on this trip. Wonderful outside picnic tables along the canal. It is a fantastic German experience. 4 of 5 stars only because you have to place all orders inside. Food does get delivered to your table, but having to get up every time you want a beer refill is kind of a hassle.

Frederick is a quirky little place for sure. Almost new and unique places opening up; some are over-hyped and some are under-hyped and for the most part, new Frederick places hit the mark; however, some hit WAY above the mark. Doner Bistro is fantastic and I hope more people know about this gem and go there. It's a mix of German and Turkish/Middle-eastern style food - and it's fantastic. I wish I would have got the ladies name that helped us out. She described the menu to us, what most people like/get, and checked on us multiple times while we ate. The wifey and I split the Doner Sandwich and the Schnitzel sandwich (with a side of fries). The Schnitzel was ho-hum. A little bland compared to what I was expecting, but still good. But the Doner sandwich...oh man oh man it was good. Extremely filling and lots of taste. Fries were excellent and they have plenty of beers - both on tap and can/bottle. No doubt we will be back; I highly recommend it.

Amazing. Very flavorful! Combines deliciousness middle eastern food with a tall German beer. Service was fast and prices reasonable. Great start if you are planning to have a few drinks.

Walked over with my dog at 11am and read the menu outside. One of the employees came out to greet us and described items on the menu in detail and gave us a background on the food and beer. I would type what she said but why spoil it for you? We placed our order at the counter and got a number to place at our table. Ketchup and napkins are on the table but there's a small condiments table with mustard, crushed red pepper, etc. We chose a picnic table outside and waited for the server to bring us our lunch. We ordered : - Beef Doner sandwich (they also have chicken) which is sliced meat with fresh lettuce, cucumbers, red onion and tzatziki (yogurt sauce) in a flatbread. - Bratwurst, which is sandwiched between a baguette and comes with crisp fries -a half liter of German wheat beer and dark beer. The beef doner was a bit bland for me but I enjoyed everything else. The service is friendly and helpful. They offered my dog water, which was appreciated. The restaurant is located right on the creek so it's a relaxing and beautiful spot to enjoy lunch and/or beers.

3 1/2 stars. Doner Bistro has a great location on Carol Creek. Service was uber friendly and quick. The outside area is dog friendly, too, and they even make sure they bring water out for your pooch! I love Turkish food (this is a German twist on Turkish) and while it was good, it wasn't amazing to me. I will definitely be back though.

Having been to the original Leesburg location a few times, when I was looking for a quick bite to eat in Frederick and saw a Doner Bistro, I headed right over. Or at least tried to- the location is a little hard to find the first time if you are just following the street address. The bistro is actually located along the waterfront, and has a nice setup overlooking the river. The food here is just as good as the original. I went with the Donerbox, and it was delicious. Service was very friendly and fairly quick. I will definitely go back next time I'm in the area.

My husband and I just ate here for the first time, and we have not tried Doner sandwiches before. We were really impressed by the food, which is a mix of Turkish/German/Mediterranean food. He had the Doner, which he loved. I tried the falafel, and it is definitely one of the best, most flavorful falafel sandwiches Ive ever had. The sandwich is filled with really delicious falafel, coleslaw, tomatoes, lettuce onions, red peppers, tzatziki. The Doner also had some kind of spicy red sauce, which was really good, so I would suggest asking for some extra for the falafel if you choose that and like spicy food. The bread is also amazing, very fresh. They serve german beer, both on tap and bottled. Tried 2 different kinds on tap and they were great. They also have great service, and will explain the menu to you (even where the meat comes from), and help you choose a beer. The food comes out FAST as well. Side note: fries are delicious and crunchy. Really, everything was on point at this place. We will be back for sure. Definitely hope more people find out about this downtown gem!

Tried my partner's fries and they were delish. However, I couldn't eat here because they weren't veggie, non-dairy or gluten-free friendly. The three stars is because I just can't believe a place that calls themselves German does not offer sauerkraut. It's a deli with yummy fries, nothing more. Don't tease me with promises of German food guys!

Too good to be true, the one star is for the beer! Yesterday the Frau and I drove to Frederick, MD and while there stop at the "Doner Bistro" for a late lunch. The atmosphere gave a somewhat feeling of an overdone Imbiss. Tables and benches where what you would expect and fit the scene. I ordered a curriewurst which was good, no brotchen, ($1.85 extra) A small mug of Gluehwein and Weihenstephan Weissen to drink. We also ordered potato pancakes and a wiener schnitzel with fries. I realize it is difficult to have food of this nature ready to serve on a short notice and did not have too high of a expectation. I am sorry to say we were disappointed greatly. Everything must have been dunked in the fryer and were greasy to the extreme. The schnitzel was hard as a rock and the potato pancakes had a flavor of grease. There were several girls there that had doners, short on the meat and long on the bread. Flat bread is used instead of pita. A great selection of beer is available. I understand the owner is from Germany and has 2 other Bistros in Virginia. So, if you are seeking a good beer and don't mind the price, this is the place to go. Prosit ! Chuck

I have been several times for the falafel. It's delicious and great with a fresh German beer. I would eat here everyday if I could. Nice outdoor seating and good location right on Carroll creek.

Been to All 3 Döner Bistro locations. The other locations are good, but the location in Frederick was far the best experience. The food AND service is top notch. The Döner here was most excellent and reminded me of the best I had in Deutschland. I highly recommend the Döner Bistro experience. And I hope they expand to more locations and keep up that German tradition of great food.

  • Boris W.

The food is truly bad. There's no hint of anything German outside of the beer. The schnitzel was hard, probably nuked, and just aweful. The sausage was edible. The Doener was OK and the fries sucked. The price was quite high. The only good thing was the stuff that came in a can imported from Germany - that's IT. Stay away and wait for the next place to open there - it'll surely go bust!

We love Doner Leesburg. We wanted to see this one last night, but #1 the posted hours on Yelp were wrong so we drove all that way to find them closed; and #2 to add insult to injury, we got locked out of the building by which we came from the parking garage and were made to walk the long way around in the bitter cold, and I am disabled and need to not walk long distances. There was no sign warning us of this. Please fix your hours and your parking access, and that would merit more stars. Your food is awesome and we'd like to come back.

My wife spent a few years living in Austria and after getting married we honeymooned there - we sampled many of the delightful culinary treats in Vienna, but doener was EVERYWHERE, and it was delicious. So, when we heard that a doener place was opening in Frederick we were very excited. We have eaten at Doener Bistro 7 times since learning of their existence and have loved every visit. Both the beef and chicken doener sandwiches are great -- a crispy, chewy grilled flatbread stuffed with the shaved doener meat, lettuce, yoghurt sauce, and spices, then complemented with, honestly, the best fries in the area, and a litre stein of authentic German beer is a perfect way to start your afternoon. They only play German pop music in their store, which is very catchy, and my wife feels like she is back in Austria every time we visit - everything is truly authentic German, from the wursts to the doener recipe to the beer to the senf (mustard). You can sit inside on long picnic style benches and tables, or outside if you like to people watch. The staff is very friendly and will often stop by to talk to you about your experience, clear your tray away, or even fill your fountain soda -- even though the place is self service with drinks and cleanup. You can tell that the owners have a passion for bringing the tasty street fare of their homeland in Germany to America, because they are doing it right. I just had doener 2 days ago and I want it again.

I've been going down to the Leesburg location for my Döner fix, so I'm happy they've landed in my backyard. Here you can't go wrong with a classic beef döner and a side of pommes (fries). Personally I can't eat here without pairing it with a Weihenstephan hefeweizen. You wont be disappointed.

Friendly customer service. Lady taking orders new her stuff about the whole menu. This place is beer and brats central!! Doner sandwich was awesome!!! Brats were excellent as well! Slight comfortable price for a meal for 4. Great atmosphere inside and outside. A+++++++ all the way!!!

  • Pete M.

Seriously, this place is about as German as a hamburger. Just because they say it's German doesn't mean it is. There's a bit of substance that's missing once you step up to the counter and place your order. Want a salad? Well, all the condiments you would normally get on your schnitzel sandwich comprise that on a paper plate. I have to admit, the bratwurst

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place after tubing down the Potomac so to put it lightly, we were starving! I hadn't had German/Turkish food before and didn't know what to expect but what I experienced was pure deliciousness! I had the Doner sandwich with chicken and my boyfriend had the German bratwurst with fries. Both were sooo good. The sandwich tasted so fresh, it reminded me of a Gyro with a yogurt type sauce. The fries are amazing. They also have a large selection of German beers, I had one that was mixed with grapefruit juice and it went perfectly with my sandwich. I can't wait to try the Adams Morgan location!!

  • Martha J.

I am giving them 5 stars as the food was really, really good - very reminiscent of Germany. Hubby is German, so he knows! Anyway, the food is great, but this is German street food. ie: CHEAP. Unfortunately, this restaurant is not cheap. We had 1 bratwurst, 1 currywurst w/ fries, an order of potato pancakes and one German beer, and it was $34. That's just too much for a quick lunch after going to the library, if you know what I mean. Currywurst and doner kebab are sold from basically hotdog carts in Germany. We wouldn't have paid more than maybe $10 for all of this over there, including the beer. I didn't take any stars off for that, but the owners are going to have to rethink their prices. They will not get the crowd who will appreciate authentic German fare at those prices, and the local walk-by traffic will not be enough to keep them in business. Which is a shame, because it was a great reminder of Germany. Also, they don't take AMEX, just so you know.

I have read about Doner kabobs in spy novels. Roots in Turkey, but really came into their own in Germany from guest workers. Doner is a shortened word for spin. They have the meat spinning on a vertical rotisserie. You have the choice of chicken or beef doner. I tried the beef doner box. It is basically doner poutine with tzatziki instead of gravy. The meat is very flavorful, the tzatziki is the best that I have had. Doesn't seem like it comes from a can. The fries that they are put on are some of the best in the area. Double fried and crisp, even with the sauce. I am looking forward to trying the currywurst, chicken doner, brats, schnitzel, and falafel.... basically their whole menu. They also have a nice selection of german beers, german soft drinks, and don't be surprised to hear Herr Hasselhoff over the sound system. Now we just need a spy ring in Frederick to complete the picture.

I love this place. Fresh, delicious food, generous portions, great atmosphere, and something different from the usual. After living in Austria for a time, I can vouch for the authenticity of the cuisine, which truly is a staple over there. It's so awesome to have a local place that brings all of that here -- not just with great food, but also German beer, and a relaxed, fun atmosphere reminiscent of some of my favorite locales in Austria. The food is consistently awesome and the fries are some of the best I've ever had. The staff is friendly and eager to serve. Going to Doener Bistro is always a great experience.

Wandered into this gem drunk a few weeks back. It was wonderful. I had some sort of German gyro sandwich which was unreal. We had something else that was incredible as well but I don't remember. All I know is you have to go here.

Rip-off for vegetarians. Great for meat eaters. The falafel sandwich is good, but ridiculously overpriced to match price of meat orders such that you are paying about $2/falafel. And it is served in a hugely oversized flap of bread that doesn't have contents to match. Go if you are with carnivores, but this restaurant deserves a veto from vegetarians.

This place is just great all around. Don't be expecting the traditional Bavarian fare here.... It's modern german..... And it's amazing. Beer selection is top notch. Excellent german beers across the board. My only complaint is that all these delicious foreign imports are a tad pricey.... But it's a price I can live with!

I love this food. I have been here twice and was really happy with the quantity of food, beer selection and service. I am dying to go back and try everything on the menu. Nice atmosphere to hang out and watch sports too even though it seems more like a fast food joint when you first walk in. Love it!

I as well have been going to Leesburg for doners, so I couldn't have been more pleased about the Frederick location opening. If initial crowds are any indication, it looks like we finally have a winner in the cursed location on Carroll Creek. In a nutshell, food (which I'll get into more in a moment) is delicious and unique, service is so very enthusiastic and friendly (not quick necessarily but that's forgivable), and there's a great selection of German beers. The atmosphere is order at the counter, and while it isn't super comfortable and is a little cozy, but it's kind of fun all the same and there is a biergarten outside which will come in handy if the weather ever gets nice here. As for the food, I believe this to be the only restaurant in the country (or at least one of the very few) that serve the Turkish street food popular in Germany, known as doners. This incorporates shawarma meat with tzaziki and spices, and a delicious fresh slaw in an absolutely awesome soft flat bread, that's just so satisfying. If you have only had gyros or shawarmas, you really need to do yourself a service and try this. The pommes (aka fries) are possibly the best in Frederick- fresh cut, fried in peanut oil, oh so good. You can get a "doner box" which is a large cup of fries mixed with doner meat and tzaziki and it's really awesome. They also have various wurst, which I've tried when someone else in my party ordered it, and it was very good, although I am hooked on the doners for now. The beers are wonderful, although not cheap, so delicious and worth spending a little more on the stuff no one else is serving - I love the Warsteiner pilsener on tap particularly. I haven't tried them, but they have authentic German sodas in the soda fountain which is very cool. Like I said, do yourself a favor and try something new - this food seems very hard not to enjoy!

The only reason this rates 2 stars is because I do plan to return and give them another shot. From the other reviews it seems like I may have visited on a bad day. This week, I stopped by during lunchtime. I had the Doner Box. The highlight of the meal was the pepper flakes liberally sprinkled on the food. Everything else left a lot to be desired. The meat (the beef) was very dry and unseasoned. The tzaziki sauce was slightly tangy, but again could have used more seasoning. The French fries were pretty good. I was extremely disappointed with this. I will return and try the wurst, but I not based on the food that I had on the 2dt visit.

This is the closest thing to authentic german that I have seen in the State of Maryland. Great food, cold beer, good hospitality makes this place a great location. Bratwursts are great and so are the pommes frites.

Hey Frederick, we finally have a German restaurant and it's REALLY good!! Just opened on corner of Market and the canal. Have not been inside yet a friend brought lunch by for us to try and this is a new "go to" place on my list. We had Currywurst, excellent. I never thought of German and curry, it works!! Schnitzel sandwich and fries with the most amazing sauce. I can't wait to go in and try some of the other dishes they have to offer and did I forget German beer!

A must visit. Food and atmosphere is authentic. Great service. Watching Germany play the World Cup against France. Schnitzel and Pommes were great, excellent selection if German beer in bottle and tap.

Outstanding. A welcome addition to Frederick's lunch options. A lot of customer friendly energy. My bratwurst was stupendous, slathered in an excellent mustard and accompanied by a delicious light and crispy roll that did not overpower the brat. Great beer and fries. I will try the falafel next!

Went in today for the first time could not have had a better experience. We got the Doner box with chicken and a pork currywurst with slaw. The currywurst was great, tons of flavor in the sauce and the meat was perfect. Then there was the Doner box. It was basically a big cup full of fries, chicken, and tzaziki sauce, that couldn't have been better. The sauce tasted homemade, the fries were crisp, and the meat tender. The gentleman that helped us was great as well. He took his time to explain the menu to the people in front of us, never lost his patience. He also offered to let me sample the beers before I made my choice going over all of the beer's highlights with me. For the beer people out there. I had the Weihenstephaner and it went perfectly with our food. All around an outstanding beer.

Decided to try this place on a recommendation of a friend. Typically, I am not a big gyro fan but this place was great! We ended up getting the last of the meat for the night. Paired it with the fries too. While sitting outside enjoying our food and the evening on the creek, the owner came out to check on us and see how the food was. No complaints here!

I lived in Germany for 4 years and experienced all the great food from there. The doner I got from here was nothing like that I got in Germany. Portion size was great but the flat bread was too much, beef was dry and the fries were overly salted. This was my first visit and I'll give it another shot when it's busier maybe that will make a difference. Came in overly excited but came out blah. If you've ever had authentic German food don't go in with the hope of getting the same. Not a beer drinker but they did have some there.
