A lot of people i know like this place. I find it just sort of meh. As places to eat in Dundalk proper go, it's not bad though (then again pickings are slim, in my opinion). The Poplar is separated into two section, a bar and a dining room. Other than the atmosphere, decor, and clientele, there isn't really any difference between the two sides (or at least none that i have ever seen). For the most part I've been in the dining room. The food can be hit or miss, many of the seafood dishes, while nothing spectacular, are usually safe bets. This most recent time i ordered the French Dip. Was disappointed. The baguette was not as good as i hoped. The meat was a bit tougher and thicker than i hoped for (bit dry as well). The rue was well just sort of pedestrian. In other words I've had better elsewhere. Service at The Poplar is also sort of hit and miss. Sometimes you can get a server that can be spot on, others you can get a bit of a flake. For this visit, I'll just say it was more on the flake side. She forgot several things, wasn't really timely, and initiated a weird conversation with my sister. That's not to say things are bad here. As i mentioned the menu does have a number of decent items that i can attest to. They are also one of the few place i have seen put forth the Crab Soup/Cream of Crab Combo which i believe they call the perfect cup i believe. If you're into Crab Soup or Cream of Crab, i would highly recommend ordering it. Deserts are also pretty good, with cakes and pies coming from Yia Yia's Bakery, and puddings (real puddings not the jello kind) done in-house. Will i go back, probably. And then I'll revise accordingly.

First off, the Poplar Inn is not fancy so jeans and a t-shirt would be perfectly acceptable. We ate in the bar area (booth) and were greeted by our waitress/bartender, Angie. The bar has a decent selection of beers but if you want wine be prepared to accept your run of the mill lower end brands. I ordered the Barnyard and it was just okay; not as good as I was hoping for. The rest of my group ordered the prime rib, baked potato, half MD/half cream of crab soup (this is their specialty and got great reviews by those that tried it). Overall the rating is based on the food; it was just average, the staff was excellent and we got out before the band started. Would I go back...sure; would I say "let's go to the Poplar for dinner"....not likely.

Tired old Dundalk restaurant, it's time to take Poplar out behind the barn and shoot it. One and done for me, only went because of a restaurant.com gift certificate.

Food was plentiful and delicious. I'm a chicken wing fanatic and there chicken wings are some of the best I've tasted. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. She gave us great recommendations! Try the zucchini fries, you will not be disappointed. Next time we are in the Baltimore area we will be stopping here.

What a travesty. Ate in the dining room. Tablecloths ripped. Food was over cooked and soggy. I find in hard to even find a good meal out of this please regardless of the special. Not a diamond in the ruff as other reviewers see it. Stay away.

The food is okay but the silverware smells and has spots on it. Plus the manager is a beootch. She can usually be seen shouting at the servers or bussers to move faster and to smile, while she stands around chewing like a cow.

This is a good down home traditional restaurant. It is and has been family owned and operated forever. We went there and the decor is very old, not unpleasant, but it hasn't been updated in a while. There is a bar next door which is distracting as it's very audible at times. We started off with the steamed shrimp appetizer. Excellent bits of large potatoes and onions along with jumbo shrimp. Well seasoned and delicious. There is a note in the menu that everything is homemade and even the cocktail sauce was which was a pleasant surprise since most places no longer do that. The main courses were the crab cake dinner (2 cakes) and their specialty grilled cheese Cheasapeake. They take crab meat and grill it with cheese as well as bacon. That was a hit and was delectable. I ate the crab cakes, which were adequate. I was disappointed that they did not use Md crab for the lumps and substituted some other crab. It was a good flavor, but not quite the same. The fries were crisp and homemade as well and were decent. Not the best in the world, but I am very picky about my fries. Service was decent for the type of mom and pop place, but considering the lack of crowd (we went late) it could have been better. With better atmosphere and some better service this would have been even better. It's a great place to get some good cheap food though and we will certainly go again.

I will start off by saying that there are not too many people out there that can type up a more informative review than me about the Poplar Inn. I visit this restaurant with my family on virtually a monthly basis, and I stop by for carryout on a monthly basis as well. So you can say I am a bi-monthly customer. I have lived here since 2008 only a mile from the Poplar Inn. The restaurant is family owned, and the owners/management, and staff are all very freindly. Their waitresses are always attentive, courteous, and fast with serving the customers. They always ask if there's anything that we need, and check up within 2-3 minutes after our meals have been served. When I call for carryout the wait is never longer than 20 minutes for food. Most of the entrees on their menu are excellent! I think that they have 1 of the greatest crab cakes/crab cake sandwiches in the entire area. Their Big Daddy Crab Cake is awesome! Their Crab Dip is top notch as well. The Burger is Excellent. The Shrimp Salad sandwich is excellent. The Friend Shrimp is Excellent. THE CREAM OF CRAB SOUP IS THE BEST IN THE ENTIRE AREA!!!! If you want a place with a thick, hearty, and fairly spicy cream of crab soup then go to the Poplar Inn! The Maryland Crab soup is also my favorite Maryland Crab soup out of any place in Baltimore, and I am a Crab soup fanatic! ...Appetizers are all great including the potato skins, wings, etc. The "Poplar Shrimp" which is a bunch of shrimp inside of a french bread baked with a cream/pesto sauce is to die for. It's certainly something to be shared as I had it in full myself once and it stuffed me up. Their Reuben sandwich is like a great home cooked sandwich, one of the best in the area. I eat it at least 1 in every 3 visits. The hot roast beef and tuna salad are GOOD! Their salmon and orange roughy are good. Their Fish sandwiches are BIG and good. Their fried oysters are OK....Their Their Steak Italiano is a decent dish. I will admit that their Steaks are not the greatest, but certainly not terrible. Their salads are all good. The side dishes are exceptional. The mashed potatoes I can tell are instant, and not great, but I love the green beans, fries, onion rings, cole slaw etc. Fries with Gravy YUM! So I really enjoy this restaurant and as long as I live in the area I will be a life long customer! On to why I did not give it 5 stars. ...For one the bathrooms need's major remodeling, are very dark (1 little energy saver light bulb). 2. I have seen this place go through 2 price mark ups since 2008. The prices have crept up to the point to where if they got any higher I might not consider dining there as much for the value I get as a paying customer for the food and service. I noticed that their soup and appetizer prices have gone up to the point that I would think twice about ordering them in the future. While I really enjoy the food and customer service I receive at the poplar inn if they came out with a new menu and the prices were another 50 centsto a dollar higher higher per item I would probably patronage it much less. Overall, this is a solid 4 star rating place that has been in business since the 50s, and I recommend that anyone who wants good food at a family owned establishment to try this place out. Anything to do with Crab is really good here!

Good food friendly staff. The chief is awesome, he made me a crab cake I can eat. He was able too make it without Old Bay which has spices I am allergies to.

We decide to go to Poplar Inn for Father's day. It was not crowded, however we were told there was a party of 16 so it may take a while. It was not too long, the table next to us were seated after us and they got their appetizers before us as well as their food. As for the food. My mom loved the cream of crab soup, the stuffed shrimp were "okay". My husband had liver and onions they were mediocre. I got the special which were ribs that were dry, over cooked. The waiter tried, he felt like nothing was going his way. Another table had a waitress that yelled to the customer at the other end, "I don't make the orange crushes or we would have them by now", we didn't need to hear that. I think the new restaurant across the street is taking their business. More establishments are coming, they need to improve to keep people coming in.
