This was some of the best and most creative Italian food I've ever had and am so surprised that it's tucked away in Cumberland. And the service was great too - so friendly, patient, and informative, and the owner stopped by at the end of our meal to say thanks and ask how our meal was. Still thinking about it and my friend tried her hand at the beet risotto I had for dinner.

Great dinner in March with coworker on the road going from PA to WV. this was just across in MD near the intersection of the three states. worth the stop; I had a chicken dish and soup; my coworker a pasta exceptional -- worth a stop

Wonderful atmosphere with the sound system crooning Frank Sinatra. Food is always very good. I've had many things on the menu and never been disappointed. Wine list is loaded. Highly recommend.

Quick stop over in Cumberland and tried this place based on a local recommendation. My meal turned into pure gluttony. Everything was fantastic. A local gem.

This Restaurant is an incredible Restaurant! I took 46 Seniors there for a meal! They are still raving about this Restaurant! The food and service doesn't get better! I also would think it is nice for a romantic dinner! From the fine service of their chef, manager, and owner their service was terrific! Try them I think you too will be delighted! I would rate this a 5 Star Restaurant!

My Husband and I were in town for an overnight trip. Not familiar with the area, we decided italian would be the safe choice since we had no reveiws or referrals. When we arrived we were asked if we had reservations. Since we didn't have any reservations we were banished to an upstairs dining area that reminded me of an attic in an old home. Not impressed at all. I ordered the Cioitella and asked to substitute the creme sause for marinara sause. My husband ordered the Delnonno. I took a bite of mine and it was overpowered by a very spicy tomato sause. While my mouth was burning from the little that I tried to eat, I talked my husband into switching with him and he reluctantly did so. I have to say that the DelNonno was dripping in olive oil and although it did have a good taste, it was way too expensive for what we received. The portion was small and it was just linguine, olive oil and a few sundried tomatoes, hardly worth the 13 and change they charged us. My husband was famished so he ate a large amount of the terrible meal I was served. Today he was feeling miserable from an upset stomach! I am originally from NY and my father was from italy, so I know a little about Good italian food. This was not it. The sause was way too spicy and definately too pricy for an attic seat. If you do decide to visit this restaurant . Don't let them put you on the third level and definately stay away from anything that has their tomato sause. I will never return!

Great place with good food and a really nice owner. This is a good place for a date night and to bring your family.

We were there during the Irongirl Triathlon. The service was terrible! It took 20 minutes to get our table, then another 20 minutes to get menus, then another 20 minutes to get water, etc, etc. The bartender saved the day by providing us water pitchers. In addition I was facing the kitchen and could see and hear the inner fighting and the handling of the food. Not fun. The bruschetta was to die for and the food was pretty good. Just don't go here when it is busy. Probably one of the worst service I've ever had.

What a find in Cumberland! We had a wonderful experience. The service was great- waiter was nice and manager was super friendly. Food was excellent. One of us had pasta w/ meatball and one had a sausage, onion, and peppers with a white wine tomato sauce. We were very pleased!

My wife and I absolutely love this place! The food is amazing and Jeff is the best bartender around. Can't go wrong with any of the specials but for your first experience I would highly recommend the abruzzo chicken. Enjoy the food, atmosphere and the great hospitality.

Service was good, but food wasn't great. The pasta with mushrooms in a "cream sauce" comes in a brown sauce, that lacked flavor. Wouldn't you expect that in a white sauce? The chicken Marsala had a heavy brown sauce which was pretty good but heavier than I thought it should be. The side of asparagus was undercooked. We did like the bread at the beginning at least.

We had great salads, perfectly cooked pasta and seafood. Ice cold beer on tap. We did not try the wine... Certainly one of the best restaurants in Cumberland. I travel to Cumberland on business and this is the kind of place youy can take your clients to. The service is better than most.... The Manager stopped by our table to check on things. I really like it when the Manager comes by the table. I'm giving them a 5 for the service and the manager.

This is some of best food in town. I just had some home made pasta that was on special, incredible. Very neat set up how the chef's are working right in front of you as you walk through the door.

My initial plan for the evening was to have dinner at Oxford House. After being seated, finding out they had no alcohol license, and their menu being several sheets of copy paper stapled in the corner...I opted to try the Italian place around the corner. It had pretty goo reviews. This was almost certainly the correct move. I had a glass of the Valpolicella Ripasso and a half order of the Cacciotora. The food, service and atmosphere far surpassed my expectations. The pasta tasted fresh-made and the sauce was extremely flavorful and well-seasoned. The bread, also possibly made in house, was a more tender variety of Italian bread, but very tasty. The half order of pasta proved too much for me to handle in one sitting, so I took the remainder with me along with an order of cannoli. Next time I'm in Cumberland, I'll be back.

Cumberland has seen better days. But not better Italian food! This is a don't miss: great service, atmosphere, dining. Don't expect big city perfection-- some of the pasta dishes missed the mark, but the desserts were a home run.

Bar drinks are weak, food is average at best. I expected more.

You can't get better Italian than a Ristorante Ottaviani's! The pollo abruzzo is excellent. While I'm not a mussels fan, my friends rave over them. The desserts are terrific but the servings are so large, I rarely can eat it. IF you're going to be in Cumberland, Ottaviani's is the place to go! Too bad they are open on Sundays.

Usually a bad experience at a restaurant involves one of bad service or bad food. However, our experience at Ristorante Ottaviani involved both. After a long, wonderful day traveling to Cumberland and riding the Maryland Western Railroad, we thought we'd cap off the night with a nice dinner. Instead we had spotty, immature service (were they high?) and terrible, terrible food. While our drinks still hadn't arrived, our waiter came to take our order for food. As we are ordering veal, lamb and beef dishes, he informed us they were out of veal, lamb and beef...! At least he said it with a giggle. The Caesar salads were just romaine covered in mayonnaise. One pasta dish was simply not done, not just al dente. A ravioli dish had a rancid white wine sauce on it. When my friend asked to replace it with a red sauce instead, the waiter came back with ravioli that was covered in grocery-store bought tomato sauce or paste. Nothing else in it, straight out of the can. And the raviolis were freezing cold in some places and scalding hot in others. The other dishes were just "meh". We'll definitely be traveling back to Cumberland to ride the scenic railway, but we'll make a point to stay as far away from Ristorante Ottaviani as we can.

Overall, I rate it 3.5. Standad Italian menu. Our special swordfish was done correctly. Nice wine list, reasonably priced. Quick, thoughtful service. If you are in Cumberland give it a try.

Some of the BEST italian I have had outside of NYC or Philly. The owner is great and the care and preparation put into the food is beyond compare. If you are within an hour of this place or you are heading through the region... must try location. Loved it so much we had them host our wedding rehersal dinner. Fantastic.

Ottaviani's is a warm, welcoming, authentic, NY style Italian restaurant. The owner's, Phil and Adrienne might as well be welcoming you into their own home they are so nice. The waiters and waitresses are top notch and very knowledgeable about the evenings menu. Want wine? Just ask the manager Tony and he will match the perfect vino with your meal. They are also kid friendly. A "Christopher Columbus" is a hit drink with my kids. Great menu items are the Civatella, Bolognese and the Biztecca Abruzzo. In the summer, you must try the Caprese while the tomatoes are fresh from the farm. I love to try the specials when the Chef creates new tastes with fresh fish from Baltimore. This is true Italian style eating -- no rush, lots of time between courses and lots of great conversation - and remember, you must ask for the check to signal you are ready to leave.

Ristorante Ottaviani is a terrific, classy restaurant in downtown Cumberland, a few steps from the pedestrian mall. There are several distinct dining areas creatively situated in a nicely decorated, warm and comfortable space. The menu is classic Italian and the dishes are tasty, with generous portions. Traditional Italian Wedding Soup is perfect for sharing. The Pollo Abruzzo and Pollo di Parmigiano were full of flavor. We didn't leave room for dessert, but they looked great! The restaurant is busy on weekends- best to make a reservation. Looking forward to trying the rest of the menu and sitting outside in warmer weather.

This is where the locals go when they want a nice dinner (and by locals I mean doctors, lawyers, and everyone else too). We apologize for the experience of the diner who gave Ristorante Ottaviani only 1 star as something must have been horrifically wrong the evening they dined. On the odd occasion, we have had a "newbie" server but that is the worst we can say about this restaurant. Ristorante Ottaviani is a family owned and operated establishment with "Mom and Pop" visiting tables and son, Tony, always there with an experienced wine recommendation and working hard to serve his loyal customers! The food is delicious and the ambiance very cozy. The hot bread straight out of the oven keeps rolling to the table with spiced olive oil for dipping. The entrees and salad have yet to dissapoint. We travel the country and the world including Italy itself and Ristorante Ottaviani's is our favorite Italian restaurant!

My wife and I were staying at nearby Rocky Gap Lodge and had found Ristorante Ottaviani online. The restaurant was highly rated and it did not disappoint! Our meal was fabulous. We had mussels for an appetizer and my wife had a filet for dinner while I had cioppino. We also shared a pasta dish. All of the food was excellent. They have a limited wine list, but that was a plus since all of the wine sounded very good and all bottles were very reasonably priced. We had a bottle of red wine that was very good. The service was great and the owner seated us himself and went over the wine list with us. The dining experience already has us planning our next trip back to Cumberland so we can eat here again.

We eat in a lot of different places and enjoy a variety of food. This place makes our top ten list. The pork shank was a real treat. The local grown tomatoes with fresh mozzarella served with melons was likewise a delicious offering. Try it you won't be disappointed. Signed a food snob :)

My girlfriend and I ate here a few weeks ago and it has become an inside joke of a horrible experience. I am shocked to find it has so many good reviews. its hard to imagine (some) of the bad things we experienced to be a one off thing for them. Where to start... When we sat down, just asked for waters. My girlfriend's water had a fly in it.. yep, a fly. I went to give her mine and lo and behold... a fly in mine too. Our waiter was slow and seemed unapologetic that our waters had flies in them. (I laughed when I read another post that posed the question if their server was high... I felt the same way. I mean.. we noticed he went out for a smoke break.. buuut). Also.. whoever priced their menu needs a lesson in pricing. an 8 dollar entree salad on the same menu as a 38 dollar chicken dish?? It didn't get better. the bread was stale, and the olive oil had way too many spices in it (which was a sign of things to come). I ordered a Ministronie soup which tasted pretty good.. but I'm pretty sure it had Bac-O-Bits in it. yep. fake bacon. an improvement over flies, I suppose. For an entree, I ordered meatballs. MEATBALLS! I was for sure they couldn't go wrong with that. They did. The noodles were really undercooked. Its one thing to be an Italian restaurant that doesn't make your own pasta... its another thing to screw up boxed noodles. And the meatballs were dry and tasted like hamburger patties that had been left in the fridge for a few days. The sauce, again, was over spiced. Meanwhile my girlfriends shrimp salad had the worst tasting shrimp I've ever had. I think they were well aware of their crappy shrimp as it had enough salt to keep the shrimp preserved for months. Those flies won't even want it. I see most of the positive reviews are from locals, and I can see how the atmosphere and having an "upscale" restaurant like this in a small town can lead to business. However, its really not that great, even if we hadn't had flies in our drinks, fake bacon in our soup, crappy service, and poorly cooked entrees. Two stars instead of one just because of the atmosphere. If all you want is atmosphere or think Italian food = loads of spices, or -- just don't have taste buds... by all means. otherwise, try and find somewhere else.

Traveling through the Cumberland, MD area, Yelped for a dinner spot and Ristorante Ottaviani popped up first. Wow, we are so glad we trusted Yelp, my wife and I enjoyed the Caprese Salad made with fresh local tomatoes, cantaloupe and watermelon - too good, perhaps one of our best treats in ages. Bread and oil followed, then the Braised Pork Shank with roasted veggies which was the best piece of pork I've eaten. It literally melted in your mouth. Tiramisu and Expresso completed the meal and we waddled out Completely Satisfied! Our server Mike was a great guy, attentive and personable. If you are in the area, don't pass this up; they have a very comfortable atmosphere and also outdoor seating. Moderately priced and make an effort to utilize local foods/produce. Still thinking about that meal!

Total surprise. I'm here for work from NYC and assumed my dinner would be boring and ordinary. Average at best. And then I wanted into this place and from the smell I knew it was going to be good. And it was so good! Service was solid. Friendly, fast, attentive, and not overbearing. Prices were reasonable. And the food was delish! I'm so picky with Italian food and this place is totally legit (or at least it tastes legit). And they have half portion options so I was able to have salad and pasta without wanting to vom from being so full. Total winner!

We had eaten here before and were looking forward to another good meal on our trip to western MD. We hadn't made reservations, so the only table we could get right away on a Friday night was on the second floor up a spiral staircase. The room had no atmosphere and strange lighting that made it difficult to see the small print on the menu. The Caesar salad and red wine were good, but we were very disappointed in the frutti di mare and the cioppino. They were both very sparse on seafood, with several empty shells. The frutti di mare was heavy on the pasta and tomato sauce, and the "toast points" in the cioppino were actually chunks of french bread. We complained to the waiter about the empty shells and lack of seafood in the dishes, and he said that he'd "mention it to the kitchen." Based on our prior, pleasurable dining experiences, we might try it again, but I'm not sure. If you go there, wait for a table downstairs or outside if the weather is good.

Great find! Thought for a moment I was back in Italy with late night dining and a full restaurant mid week and some great music playing, nice decor. Good wait staff. Delicious flavors. Tried the strawberry salad chicken abruzzi and hearty pasta civitella were all good. Half portion was plenty for ave appetite. Nice town

So when going to Cumberland, MD one does not really expect much with regard to food. It's a bit of a dated place but I must say that Ottaviani is breathing some new cullinary life into the old downtown in a very cool historic building. If I had been blindfolded and dropped into this place, I would have thought that I was in New York City. The food was very good and very reasonably priced. The menue is a bit limited, but it covers all the basic food groups. Service was quite good and drink prices were very, very reasonable. I go to Cumberland about once a quarter to visit my other in-law, and I will definitely go back to Ottaviani's for a meal. And for anyone visiting with kids, WOW, what a great deal. Kids under 8 eat free and they provide a full coloring book (not just a paper place mats).

We were driving from Oak Park Illinois to Washington DC. It was our second day - we are old, retired and in no hurry. It was dinner time. We punched in the GPS And this place came up. Strange neighborhood - looks like it was a slum and is on the way up. And strange narrow streets (by Chicago standards) and strange parking - on the street with no parking meters and no pay stations - you don't pay by phone and you don't pay by credit card and you don't even pay with coins.. No reservations, seated at one of the 2 or 3 tables up front. Fast and attentive service.. I picked the Abruzzo Chicken and was told, "That is our specialty." It was unique and it was good. The kitchen is right there up front with foggy glass windows around it. My wife & I wondered way they did not have clear glass windows so we could watch the kitchen. Our conclusion was that they don't want us to watch when they drop food on the floor and pick it up. (That was a joke.) The food was very good. The prices were reasonable. We were traveling. We got in and out fast. We had good food. We had good service. The place we sat (NOT up that spiral staircase to the attic) was very comfortable. We are happy. If we ever happen to be in Cumberland Maryland at dinner time we will be back. gp

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I am a local. Been here a couple of times for the anniversary, special occasion, etc. This is a very upscale Italian restaurant. It may come with a higher price tag which some people below may mention. Plain a simple- it's a GREAT restaurant. Parking may be an issue downtown, but don't take away from the restaurant. The owner Tony is always around drinking wine with people, talking with people and making sure everyone is happy. Chicken Parmesan is good. Bison with red potatoes is PERFECT! They run specials certain nights for half-off wine bottles etc. Make sure you call ahead and check! Great place, better people!

I'm too shocked to see so many positive reviews from locals. That's what lead us into this place... but like Austo D. (below) we were thoroughly disappointed. Worst restaurant experience of the year so far. We were traveling and looking for dinner, and my wife said - Italian! So we went on Yelp and find what looked to be a good restaurant nearby. Upon arrival it sure looked like a good Italian restaurant with character. That's the last good thing I have to say about it. We got seated and things went down fast from there. Restaurant was moderately busy, but enough waiters were on hand. Still, it took a while for waiter to appear with menus. Than it took half an hour to get drinks. First sure sign of bad management. If you deliver drinks fast you can double your alcohol sales. If you take half an hour - you can't sell another one in half an hour... At that point I started a stopwatch to time things. There was nothing else to do waiting for drinks! Well, anyway, we made our order. Tuna special and carpaccio appetizers, pastas for the main dishes. One Alfredo, one with porcini mushrooms. It took 33 minutes to get appetizers. They were nothing special, but okay. Then it took an hour and 9 minutes to get main dishes. Yes. 1:09. During that time we didn't see our waiter once, as he probably didn't want to be bothered with questions about where is our food. Having nothing to do we wanted to order more drinks, but couldn't. I literally had to go find and grab the waiter, for him to come to our table. Pasta was really bad. At this point I'm not talking about real Alfredo I tried at Alfredo's restaurant in Rome... No... It was bad by any standard. it was worse than my 6 y.o. daughter made on a first try. Seriously overcooked and stale pasta, most probably made in big batch in the morning (hope not yesterday), dressed with flat white thing that tasted *nothing* like Alfredo. The closest thing I can think of is coffemate dairy-free creamer... It's just impossible to screw up basic pasta souse so much. It's impossible to mix cream with butter with cheese and get that tasteless white... stuff in the end. Unless it's budget souse from can from lowest shelf in budget grocery store, made to last decades on the shelf. My wife's pasta was equally bad. I've read their website about family recipes and all that usual stuff. Shameful lie. No Italian would cook and serve pasta that bad. I suspect the real "cook" in the kitchen has no experience in Italian cuisine whatsoever. And grew up in opposite part of the world. And all those "family recipes" is just an effort to make something that *look* like pictures on internet. Still, if owner is of Italian heritage - he should've known better to let those dishes leave the kitchen. The only good thing was cannoli for desert. Find out where they buy them and go straight there, skipping this sad restaurant.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
