This place was awesome! The XXX sauce was crazy hot! I tried to pry the recipe contents out of the cashier, but he wasn't having it. But, he did give me a taste test before I slathered it all over my sandwich. Bring cash as that's all they take. And, if you're ordering for 2, consider getting the small fries as the large is just too much of an undertaking. Incredible BBQ on a sandwich bread that is unlike any other I've had.

If I could put six stars I would! It's taboo to say anything bad about Andy Nelsons in Baltimore, and Andy Nelsons is great, but Andy Nelsons is number 2! The smoked turkey was amazing! Give the Charcoal Deli a try, you will not be disappointed!

This has got to be one of my favorite local spots, hands down. It's little spots like this that produce the best quality food. Charcoal Deli has been a favorite of mine for over a decade now. The food is fresh and made to order. Fries are hand cut each day and seasoned beautifully. Burgers, pit beef, pit turkey, wings, lemonade -- it's all fantastic! There is minimal seating with only a couple long picnic tables, but it is relaxing to sit outside and eat if there is room. Credit cards are not accepted; CASH ONLY. Yes, that may seem like a hassle to most people, but it's well worth the effort to the ATM. Try anything from the menu, you will not be disappointed.

I'm not a Pit Beef/BBQ connoisseur but I sure as heck know my cheese french fries and Charcoal Deli's are delicious. The fries are thick, crispy, hot out of the fryer - essentially everything you look for. Their cheddar cheese sauce is a bit different - thick, (almost paste like), kind of stretchy (it'll make sense once you've seen it) - but peppery and yummy. Wash it all down with their mouthwatering lemonades and you're good to go. I have ordered their Pit Turkey and Pit Ham. While I enjoyed them, I do think the massive kaier roll can get a bit overwhelming and I've had slightly better Q sauce elsewhere. Their ribs are great - fall off the bone, right amount of sauce - definitely worth a try. But really, with the amount of fries you get in an order - I'm good to go with just that. You'll start to crave them too, trust me.

The wings here are delicious. I got the hottest ones you can get, the XXX-Hot and they live up to that name! They were a nice size and very juicy. They also grill their wings are grilled, which I love! The fries were really good too. I ordered the Ravens flavorade to drink and it was super refreshing. I recommend it if you like lemonade/limeade type of things- I remember it being pretty sweet too. I think for that whole combo it was around $8-9, which is nice. I've had their pit beef sandwich and I thought it was pretty tasty. It was cooked really well and the sandwich was a nice size.

The two biggest complaints about this place: They don't accept credit cards. Now, they do! They don't have indoor seating. Now, they do: The "Sit 'n Chew" area is right around the corner. They'll even bring the food to you if it is being cooked to order. I'm totally addicted to their fries. I usually like vinegar or some condiments with my fries but theirs are good enough as-is, unless I choose to run them through the XXX wing sauce.

I've reviewed quite a few pit beef stands in my day. We've been all over, and over time you learn to pick out the good from the bad. This is the first pit beef stand I've ever eaten at, that required you to request ANY topping at all before they give it to you. Most places allow you to top your sandwich to your own specs. That being said, the beef was tender and cooked as we'd asked. Literally as we'd asked, because the kid that took our order didn't ask and we had to shout through the window. He also didn't ask what we wanted on it, which was how we discovered that you don't top it yourself. Back through the window it went. Very generic sauce, the beef needed a bit of seasoning and the roll was nothing to write home about. I've been to Chaps on 40, what was I thinking?

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Best Ribs in town. Tried all the fancy shmancy spots around there and they have nothing on these ribs! Pit Bee is really good too, even though I will always be partial to Chaps on Pulaski. Staff is very friendly and attentive! One of my faves!

I always feel like there's something wrong with me when I don't really care for a place that has pretty excellent ratings, but, whatever, this place just didn't really do it for me. Pros: Relatively inexpensive for what you get Lots of options Amazing fries I got the Danski (pit beef, swiss, bbq sauce, old bay) and I didn't expect the bbq sauce to be as vinegar-y as it was, which was my fault. It was also spicier than I expected, and the old bay contributed to that, so I took the top part of the bun that had the most bbq sauce and old bay and just ate the rest of the sandwich. There was a ton of meat, which was good. It just wasn't spectacular. The fries were awesome, and I made sure to get the cheese sauce after reading Michelle H's review. And she was totally right... it was kind of paste-like and stretchy. It was also sort of a weird color and didn't have the most pleasant smell, but it tasted wayyy better than I expected. Don't bother with the homemade brownie... I got 1/3 of the way through and in the trash it went, and I can easily kill most baked goods. It's close by, and there's a lot of stuff to potentially try, so I may be back at some point. At least for the fries...

The BBQ was so so. Nothing to write home about . With just benches to sit outside it may be a better experience in summer.

Still the same tasty pit beef! Tender, full of flavor and plenty of fixins to choose from! They have a decent menu with side salads, fries, wings, many sandwiches and snowballs!! Great place to grab lunch quick!

  • Janet M.

Food is usually good, but this time they gave me the wrong flavor wings and I didn't realize it until I got home. If you don't specifically ask for shorter grill time, the wings are burnt. The cream of crab soup was full of shells.

THE CAJUN BBQ WINGS ARE MY FAVORITE WINGS IN BALTIMORE!!! Did I say that loud enough? I'll repeat it again....MY FAVORITE WINGS IN BALTIMORE!!!!! These Cajun wings are gourmet. The other wings they make are ok. BUT THE CAJUN WINGS ARE THE BEST IN BALTIMORE/DC..What makes them the best? 3 elements do it for me. Great wing quality, outstanding sauce & taste, and the cook.. The wings are large, juicy, and the grade is just right. The Cajun flavor is amazing. Spicy, tangy, and sweet. It mixes well with the bleu cheese..( one of my few cons is that the bleu cheese costs a dollar if you want extra on top of the deserved $10 minimum size snacker order..) The Biggest difference between these guys and everyone else is the cook method. It's like they got Walter White back there!! They Grill these wings!! The grill doesn't dry out the wings, leaving them juicy and plump. The rest of the menu is also very good also. I really like the ribs and fries. The Lemonade is very good also. Just to be Clear: THESE ARE THE BEST WINGS IN THE BALT/DC AREA!!!!!!! Couldn't give it stars because it can be a bit pricey for a carryout..

I didn't get what I ordered - it was either made wrong or it was someone elses meal. The pitbeef was terrible - no flavor, undercooked, not overflowing the large bun. It's pricey for what you get. The fries are, however, delicious!

I am always on the look out for good Pit beef and anything made in a smoker. Although this place is a little hidden, it is well worth driving less than a block off of York Rd. Seriously... less than a block. Why are you still reading this?? Go... Pit Beef... Now... Ok Welcome back, what did you get?? "The Good" - There is a punch card for The Sandwich Club [actual name may vary but that's what it is ;)] Get one and use it. - Ravenade - Grape Flavored Lemonade... Yes Please! Oh and don't be afraid of the Lemons that look purple... all is well. - The specialty sandwich combos are listed by name but not ingredient. Although the board suggests asking the cashier, try looking at the carryout menu so you can do the comparison and not hold up my line. - They have indoor seating available for the winter months shared with the Billiard / Arcade Hall next door. - In a strange twist of fate this location has decent fries. Even though this goes against my law of Great Pit Beef = Bad Fries. - The Pit Beef / Pit Ham and Provolone is one of my favorites and you should give it a try. - A recent change of the use of credit cards for payment options... Welcome to the twenty fourth and a half century boys! "The Meh" - It is a little hard to find but follow the quick tip and look to the right when you see the Pizza Hut on the left and you will be good to go. "The Bad" - Nothing really bad to comment on.

As pit beef stands go this place was pretty good. The beef lacked that charcoal or "pit" flavor and it was served cold. I also definitely agree with another reviewer that customers should be able to top their own sandwich. On the other hand the sandwich was massive and the beef was done perfectly - ie rare but not bloody. Also, the fries were awesome.

  • Kara W.

I visited early on a Saturday evening with my friend. He ordered the pit beef with tiger sauce, peppers, and onions. I ordered the pit turkey with provolone, onions, and mustard. We also split a small order of fries. Both sandwiches were just ok- cold and served on cold kaiser rolls. I'm not sure if the meat was warm and got cold waiting for the fries to drop, if the meat is usually served cold, or if my memory of hot pit beef sandwiches is faulty. At any rate, the sandwiches were less than tasty, and a toasted bun would have been nice. The fries, however, were piping hot, awesome and boardwalk style. I might go back if I were in the area and had a hankerin' for 'em. I'll just have to remember to ask for ketchup, because they don't just give it to you. I started out giving this place 3 stars because the service was decent. But, then I read other reviews where people say that they received punch cards. I didn't get a punch card, which may have been a reason to give this place a second chance, if it deserves one...

My husband and I have been frequent customers for years. We love, love, love the ribs. They fall right off the bone and the sauce is delicious. The sandwiches are quite good also and Charcoal Deli offers a variety of sandwich choices. The fries can often be overly salty so we ask for them unsalted and we season them to our taste. The staff is friendly and efficient. Wait time for food is very reasonablle (of course, calling ahead is a good option!). Definitely recommend Charcoal Deli.

Poor service and attitude. Fresh squeezed lemonade was week as circus punch to start and didn't get tart or sweet until the last sip.

Pit Beef Sandwich: Beef was piled high and sliced very thin which made it even more tender. Delicious! Pulled Pork Sandwich: Disappointing because it was smothered in sauce. It resembled a Sloppy Joe. I prefer just a little bit of sauce, just enough to make it wet to not detract from the smoked pork flaver. This tasted just like the sauce it was smothered in. I wouldn't order it again. Fries: Ordered a large and got a bag full of fries just like you would get at Five Guys. Tasted similiar, as well. Pretty good and 2 people couldn't eat them all. Overall it was a positive experience, even for carry out. I will be returning and next time I plan to try the Pit Turkey Sandwich. Wish they had brisket on the menu.

I'm so sad I just left the area, I've never had better Pit Beef, and I've tried a lot of places. My weekly order was 1 regular pit ham, 1 regular beef, small fry and a lemonade.

Love their hot roast beef and pit beef sandwiches. And they have THE best fries!!!! We've come here for years and their food is consistently good.

If you follow me on Yelp, you know that I am a die hard pit beef fan. What you may not know is that Charcoal Deli is on the street I spent the beginning of my life. In fact, Church Lane is the epicenter of my family. Back in the day, we occupied every other house and everyone at the now-torn-down bar at the end of Church next to the train tracks (long before it was ever light rail) was probably blood related. I hung out at that bar with my parents when I was five. It was a different time and a time I still yearn for. One of the things that transport me back to that time is pit beef. Anyway, my fav pit beef will always come from a roadside stand with a guy and his grill. When you can't get that, Charcoal Deli will always be a great substitute. They know pit beef and they serve it up the way it should be. This is surely a place you want to try out if you're even half as big of a pit beef aficionado as I am.

Friday I thought I would stop by here and give it a try.I must have the beef sitting around a while. It was a bit dry but tasted good. I was there right before the lunch crowd

I have been eating here since 1986! The XXX Sauce is good. For those that cannot handle the heat, the Cajun sauce is great. The Deli is the first stop with every return trip to the East Coast. elcd

Great portions for the $$, I had a pit beef ---melt in your mouth good. Fries rounded it out. I'll be going back .. and I think i'm going to try the ribs!

Good pit beef. Fries and gravy are tasty too. The bbq sauce I tried this time was sweeter and more bitter than I normally like, but I will try the other next time. Everything was cooked perfectly. The fries are really good. Great for carryout. Ribs are next!

I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed this place before as it is one of my families favorites. Rarely a weekend goes by without one of us making the Charcoal Deli run. Yes it is off the beaten path but for me it is very near where I live and I have been coming here for many many years. Service is always friendly and fast, the Pit beef is always awesome, the fries are just like Boardwalks and Turkey and ham are great as well. Nice fresh toppings and other than occasionally missing on getting it medium rare, I have never had a complaint here. (even that doesn't happen often) Consistency is only an attribute when you are good at something and they truly are good at what they do and as reliable as Old Faithful. This weekend they were very busy when I got there on Sunday and they handled the crowd with ease. Hope they are there for many years to come.

Charcoal Deli is wonderful. I found this place on a humble and have been quite please with their BBQ since then. I've gotten the PIT BEEF, hands down the best in the area. As far as the ribs, my mother's had the ribs and all she could do was shake her head and smack her mouth with yummy goodness of BBQ all over her mouth. GREAT GREAT GREAT place. ***I found out if you call ahead you don't have to wait in the long line, salivating over everyone's meal :)***

  • Kathy T.

The Charcoal Deli is pretty demanding of their customers. They only take cash, the lines can be long (especially before school lets out for the summer), and you have to shout your order over the din of the kitchen fans. And it's all worth it. Everything that comes off the grill is great, the beef, the turkey, the hot dogs, the hamburgers... Order the fries WELL DONE to avoid the limp ones and then douse them with vinegar for the optimal effect.

This little spot hidden away on a side street attached to a pool hall has been a local staple for years. This is strictly walk up window service. They offer the best pit beef sandwhiches and fries. If you love wings they are the best I have ever tasted. They bake them, then coat them in hot or barbaque sauce, grill them again and coat them once more. What you get is the best charred wings ever invented. Cash only here and you can phone in orders. Try your pitbeef with horseradish and sauce. The best ever!

if your looking for killer pit beef and some of the best fries you'll ever eat, go no further... if you are looking for ambience, dont bother.. this place serves some fabulous grub... little pricey

Awesome place for a quick bite to eat. Not really a sit down kind of place as there are only two picnic tables where you can sit so I normally get mine to go. It's a kind of hard to spot if you don't know what you are looking for...but they have great stuff. Pit Beef sandwiches are excellent, as are the chicken sandwiches, fries are delicious, and the OC Burger is yum. Wasn't a fan of their Caesar Salad, it seemed really dry and peppery, but I always go for their sandwiches anyhow. Definitely good grub. Cash only though...

Go here. I will always go here when I want some great BBQ'd food. Unfortunately, it closes at 8pm! That's what's holding it from five stars, honestly... It has outdoor seating and all. 9pm is a slam dunk in the summer. The food is amazing. I had some of their lemonade and it was refreshing and delicious. Their BBQ chicken sandwich was really great. Perfectly cooked, nice and soft... And a delicious, tangy BBQ sauce. Their sides were absolutely amazing... Great fries with a delicious cheese side, which in itself was really good. We also had their onion rings and their basil mac-n-cheese, which hit the spot. Basil mac is something that more places should try... But I imagine if they get it wrong, it could suck... Luckily, Charcoal Deli does it right!

Freshly prepared, expertly cooked and seasoned meats of several kinds. You can special order your pit beef or other sandwiches with items on it or on the side. Amazing fries made fresh from actual potatoes. "Home made" lemonade is just right in tartness to sweetness. And if you go often, they have a sandwich club card that rewards a free sandwich after so many visit. Plus they cater. They are closed on Mondays, so get your fill on any other day.

Went here for lunch today with a group of friends. It wasn't very crowded (we were the only ones there waiting for our order) so we were really surprised at the wait. It too sooo long to get our food. I waited 25 minutes.... for a regular pit beef and order of fries. They didn't even have to get me a drink since I grabbed a can. None of us could figure out why the wait was so long. Of course, by the time we all got our sandwiches and headed inside to eat, the food was mostly cold. We also had to eat fast since the wait took up a majority of our lunch hour. As mentioned by other reviewers, they don't use gloves while prepping food. The person taking credit cards and money also stepped over to do food prep. Bare hands, no washing. I witnessed the employee doing fries grab handfuls (bare handed) to throw in the frier. When they filled the fry cups, the used a scoop.... but used their bare hand on the other side of the cup to keep fries from falling out. On top of everything else, the sandwich was skimpy. For over $12 I expected a bit more.

Went with coworkers on a beautiful early fall day, to enjoy lunch outside on the picnic tables. Unlike a lot of the prior reviews, not much good to say, which I honestly didn't expect since I've long been a fan of the sister pit off of Old Harford and Putty Hill. The food preparation was very, very slow. Perhaps it was the meticulous weighing of how much meat to use, to the hundredth of an ounce. Perhaps it was how they then re-warm the meat on a rather scary looking grill, so that when you finally get your sammy, it's still unevenly warmed, with some hot, and some only slightly warmer than cold. The three of us each got sammiches and split the large fries, the latter being the clear highlight of the meal. None of the sammies had properly prepared meat, and we were very disappointed with the size versus the cost. Two of us got fountain sodas, both of which were very bad. Really?! At the end of our lunch we all concurred, "well, we can mark this place off our list!" (of places we consider when debating where to go for lunch).

BEWARE: The guy who was taking orders and accepting the money also prepared the toppings on the sandwiches with his bare ungloved hands!!

I visited here and purchased a combo which comes with sandwich, fries and drink. It seemed very expensive to me... Over $11.00. The sandwich was good but was on a large roll that seemed too large for it. My biggest concern is I watched the female employee who put my fries in the bag grab them from the top with a hand with no glove on it. So basically every fry on top was rubbed by her bare hand. Not a fan of that. Also didn't love the guy dropping f bomb behind the counter with customers in front of him.

Yum! Try a ham beef combo on a kaiser. I miss all of this yummy food. Live out of state now. but I'll be back there soon! It's addictive
