Stopped in on a random Wednesday afternoon for a drink to top off an epic birthday (we went skydiving!) We were introduced to the infused Jack Daniels, which is not usually our drink of choice but totally awesome (and we may be hooked). A beautiful Wednesday meant it wasn't crowded, so we enjoyed the decor and the saddle-stools (which aren't a very lady-like way to sit, but oh well!) We were treated well and would certainly come back.

It's Fells, it's noisy, it has the 20 somethings running around and making fools out of themselves. It's designed to have a saloon feel, and I actually really enjoyed the infused tequilas. I didn't quite understand the "here we play dance music" section and the "we have a live band" section right behind it. It was a Friday night, so it was packed to hell, but one of the few places I've ever been down in that area that I didn't need to wait in line for the bathroom. It was ok as a place to drink that other people picked and I just tagged along. I don't think I'd choose to come back on my own.

For a minute let us not assume that this is some type of historic spot that Edgar Allan Poe used to visit. Without researching this rumor, you would never have known this tale, as the entire establishment screams tourist spot. From the half sleepy door man who found his cell phone more interesting to the high priced menu items, you'll feel like you have had this experience before. The interior is broken down into multiple bar areas, each branching off of the main walkway, they feel intertwined yet somewhat separate. On a Thursday night at 8 pm only two of the bar areas were in use. The main area had a handful of locals who had come to see a live music performance. The area just behind the front one had a few drinkers and no one attending bar for the first 15 minutes we sat there, feeling like trapped tourists. Eventually a female bar tender came around and we were able to ask for food menus and order drinks. The bar was fully stocked, yet had no semblance of order. Liquor that seemed bottom shelf was up on the top shelf, causing prices ranges to be unclear. The menu states that they have a variety of local craft beers on tap and to ask your server, when I asked for a tap listing I was told that they did not have one. Instead I was forced to walk around and look at the taps. I found that they repeated at each bar area and they only offered around 6 beers, and not the number reported by the menu. The beers were not local, instead I found them to be mainstream and domestics. Upon returning to the bar I sat down and leaned in to read the menu, when I felt the wetness of spilled beer from a horrible pour soak into my $100 jacket. I had just come from a funeral service and this was not the ending to my day that I had desired. I shook this off, and concentrated on the food menu. Food offerings were an attempt at creativity on basic concepts. You'll find your basic chicken sandwiches and burgers, with creative toppings attempting to turn the mundane into something more exciting. I ordered a chicken and BBQ bacon sandwich with fries, and sat back on the oddly shaped wooden horse saddle chair, taking in the surrounding environment. The interior was mostly exposed dark woods, rustic, and felt like a horse barn. Dark lighting accentuated the bar area and provided no useful patron lighting. This was why I was unable to see the large puddle of spilled beer laying on the bar top. I did not see any games or forms of entertainment other than the live performers. I noticed some type of mixed concoctions behind the bar, labeled as Jack & "something". Having satisfactorily compared notes with my companions, I got up and looked around the non-occupied bar areas. These areas were much smaller and felt like overflow spots for busy nights. They also felt like traps, I could easily view myself caught at one of these areas unable to pass through a packed crowd. I eventually found myself in the bathroom, washing my hands via an interesting faucet that looked like the spout of an underground well. By the time I returned I had only about a 15 minute wait until my food arrived. The chicken was thick and much larger than the bread it was served on. It tasted like the grill, which on this occasion I found enjoyable. The topped BBQ sauce was sweet and accompanied the bacon well. The included fries were a very small portion, and for the price of the meal providing more filler like fries and produce would have been a welcomed addition. Overall I enjoyed the food and my companions also had fond things to say about their choice of meal. This location was an interesting spot and I am not disappointed that I took the detour to check it out. Parking was found just 1 block away for $4 at a parking structure. This area of Baltimore is highly revitalized and fun to walk around, however it is extremely touristy. As for pubs, I wouldn't go here on a weekly basis for drinks. The prices were a reflection of the area and the service felt somewhat inattentive. This was a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't spend serious time seeking this place out again.

Ok so this is my experience with this hole. I went there with a friend to have fun and chill it was 1:20 and they decided to turn on the lights. All a sudden the bartender decided that I don't need my cup of vodka no more I seen her taken that but when I told her that she said I'm lying and called the bouncers to kick me out with a devilish smile. She was a short blonde lady and she definitely ruined my night. So thanks for nothing lame bar

Went in Monday night with a friend- awesome service, awesome atmosphere, great entertainment (live music), great management, and Fells, the best location! This place is rich in history and I had a blast. Locals love it, and if you are an out-of-towner, you haven't really visited Baltimore unless you stop in this place!

We hit this place two days in a row. Nice atmosphere and they zone it off with different music in sections. Little hip hop and R&B at front bar but rock and roll or country in the next bar section. Yes i saw at least 4 bars. Great look, prompt service and the know their tequila. Ask questions and they have the answers. Also showcasing 3 fused flavors. Cant miss the large jars as soon as you sit down. Next time we are in Baltimore will definitely make a stop here

Definitely the kind of place that develops regulars. A basic noisy bar with pretty decent live music. I had the adult iced tea. It was fine, not terribly strong. The bartender was quick and friendly. I would definitely go back, especially if I was in the mood to get a lil' bit rowdy!

Came in for just one beer where Edgar Allen Poe came for his last drink. Didn't expect to have a great bar tender such a a David. By him and his awesome attitude, we stayed several hours. Keep up the great service Dave, we will be back!!!! And I will tell other flight crews to come here as well.

Have your parents ever told you that they were taking you to the "happiest place on earth"? You automatically assume that they're taking you to Disneyland. There's even a sign outside that says "Welcome to the Magic". So you get all excited, you pack your bags, you find your prettiest princess dress. You walk into the gates, and dun dun dun...you're at the dentist... They proceed to confuse the crap out of you by bringing out the tray of neon braces, laughing gas, sterilized dental equipment, the scary fat dentist dressed like a clown, and relaxing Mozart playing in the background. You wake up feeling confused and really pissed off. Well, that's how we felt. Allow me to elaborate. First, the inconsistency of prices. We got charged a bunch of random prices for the same order of Grey Goose and Red Bull - oh and without the disclosure that they didn't serve Red Bull, but some knock-off energy drink. They charged us for a "call drink" once, a "top shelf" drink a few other times, and "add energy" for all cocktails. Who charges extra $2 for the knock-off energy drink when you're already charging $12 for top shelf cocktail? So, your drinks are $14 (w/o tax). Ok sure. My next issue - the inept bartender who clearly didn't pay attention to the liquor he was pouring and charging for. He didn't realize that he was pouring an empty bottle of Grey Goose until we told him what he did. He then proceeded to splash a tablespoon off the drink, which mostly consisted of energy drink, and filled it up with a tablespoon of Grey Goose. Not even a 1 second count to appease my observation of his mistake. Ok dude. Thanks for the energy drink? (Receipts will be posted) The acoustics were horrible. I get it, you want to have different vibes in multiple areas of your establishment, but good lord! I think it's time for a professional installment/repositioning of your speakers. I felt like I was listening to two different playlists in the same "room". I had 1 drink. I was pretty much sober. It was really annoying. And lastly, the bouncers/watchers-on-the-wall and the bartenders. Know when to cut people off. Yea, I get it. Drunk people are easier to get tips from. But when two girls are literally scratching random people up on the dance floor on the verge of wanting to fight strangers and their own friends, then you proceed to give them another drink that they spill all over themselves. That's an issue. The only positive note was the last bartender we had for the night. He still charged top shelf prices but he was decent enough to ask whether we would take Monster instead of Red Bull. He actually poured the proper amount of liquor. So with that said...No thanks. Definitely was not a fun night. And to those "parents" aka fellow Yelpers who led me here - whyyyyyyy have you forsaken me?

I know ignorance but this racist place takes the crown. My cousin ordered many different plates and it was funny that the people beside us received a larger and nicer plating. I asked where is there a capital one bank and she replied "you have a smart phone, use it." Haven't felt this wrong in a while

Very cool bar. Picture a dive bar with old oak wood from floor to bar to ceiling. Saunter your old western chaps in and straddle one of their wooden saddle seats at the bar. Or chill out sipping Jack Daniels at a table while listening to some good live music (Pat Owens is great). We really love coming to this bar. It's not trendy... but know for sure that this divey-old bar is so much cooler than trendy. It is America's oldest saloon established in 1775! Must read history: thehorsebaltimore.com/hi… They recently expanded to the space next door, appropriately named "The Horse You Rode Out On." Very cool because the spaces open up to intermingle but also are separate up front. Pick a side! They are both cool in their own way. You can listen to live music in the original bar or watch football on the screens in the new bar. Bartenders are always friendly and attentive. Dave is great!!! I wish they had a few more beers on tap but they have about 10 different beers on tap with some good rotating craft selections. I've never eaten here since there are so many great restaurants in Baltimore.

I don't know much about the Baltimore scene... don't even know if there is a scene. But I was taken to "the horse" for drinks after work during a conference. This is one of the oldest bars in the country, it was said to me that Mr Edgar Allan Poe himself used to frequent the place. Did he? It doesn't really matter. Cheap beer, cheap drinks, friendly service... live music, clean athmosphere = 5 stars.

Stopped in for a quick drink one afternoon while showing my man around Fells Point. Been to this spot for a work party years ago, when I lived in Baltimore, other than that, this was my only time here. I do absolutely love it. It's the oldest bar around, I think dating back to the 1700s? The atmosphere is right up my alley. Western, cowboys! Yeee haw! The bar stools themselves are shaped like saddles! Slightly uncomfortable, but so unique, who cares. I felt right at home here! We were fortunate enough to be here on a day when the live music was really good!!! Sometimes live music can be a really bad thing!! I wish I remember who it was by name, but all I know is it was one guy singing and playing guitar. For the first 20 minutes of being there, he was SO good, I thought it had been the radio. Drinks are a bit overpriced, but you can expect that in a touristy part of town. Bartenders were nice and welcoming, with no shortage of the word "hon" being used.

Great place to grab a whiskey and some solid food. Love the wings, crab pretzels, and cheese steaks. Although the Horse is known for their Jack Daniels infusions (which are way too easy to knock back), do not forget to try one of the craft margaritas. Historic setting and great location make this a place I try to visit every time I am in Baltimore.

The bouncer is either not sober or he is slacking off. Awesome food! We ordered chicken chesapeake wrap with waffle fries and they were hot and extra crispy. Fun place!

RESPONSE TO 2nd OWNER RESPONSE: ------ Eric, While you have got my brain churning with some points to get that second star you failed to understand that nobody else at my table was offered water. I understand Maryland has some interesting laws but I don't think the double standard is one of them. So yes, #failure in context to the situation and your explainin'. I refuse to be advised that I don't support small businesses. You didn't do your research on me (most of my reviews are favorable ones of said subject). I give credit where it is due. I kinda respect the defense mode. But my opinion is like an asshole. And since you're being one about it and yelpers only make up one percent of your clientele (consider selling this formula)... Why so grumpy about my asshole thoughts? Because I said someone sucked and was a wannabe? If I got this much attention when I was at your bar, the OG review would have been totally turnt up 5 stars. "Really Really Realest of talks." That's my tag line here. I'm not changing my opinion because it touches your sensibilities. If you have further issues about my thoughts, feel free to respond to the message I sent you yesterday. Just like you asked me to message you instead of writing reviews in your response, feel free to stop publicly blasting me. But please remember that yelp is a forum for real people with honest reviews. Not message the business a virtual constructive comment card for constructive criticism when they only want positive feedback on the Internet. Otherwise, I'll stop in and say hi and build on that experience and this experience. You should put a face to the "horseshit" one star reviewer. I don't believe every business deserves a second chance but I admire how passionately you know I'm wrong. PS Thank you for the halfhearted apology if it was one. If you know of anyone hiring a salty, over-confident business consultant show em this thread for proof of your odd endorsement. Cheers! RESPONSE TO 1st OWNER RESPONSE: ----- Eric, I am always happy to receive engaged responses from business owners. Normally, when it is negative, I receive a message requesting a return visit to up the ante or put a face to the review. Not... this. I hope you see that while you feel insulted by way I articulated my experience (and the experience of the guests that were with me), calling me a wannabe, telling me your entire bar wouldn't like me, and urging me on to my 500th review as a response is not only as insulting as you called me but not quite befitting of a business owner who is in the same token curious of certain aspects of my opinion (which a private message could have gotten you a quick answer). When it comes down to it, my opinion is straight forward and valid for the day I went. I did not say anything that was not valid and was not hurtful to anybody. It was MY opinion. I would have probably gone back another day to give it another try because I have heard certain musical acts on certain days aren't bad. But I will judge a business by the owner and their attitude towards criticism. If all you want is positive criticism, pets are the way to go... not reading yelp reviews. Keep on churning out those old bay nacho things - those were pretty good. I am not a business owner, but in the future, shaming a negative review does not shed a positive light on your business in my opinion. I stand by my opinion and more importantly how I was treated as a woman (which is the one thing you didn't discuss). Thank you for showing how you handle customer feedback. I hope that resonates with those who do read this.

When I walked in here a few weeks ago with my boyfriend to kill some time before dinner plans, I realized I had been there before! But forgive me if I don't have much to say about that first occasion since I was with a bachelorette party and all I can really recall is that it was one of several fun stops that evening! Second time around, we sat at the bar, watched some football, chatted with CJ the bartender, had some delish loaded nachos and angry orchard on tap. I'd love to come back some day when I'm not driving and try out the various types of Jack Daniels!

The funny thing, Eric, is you have no clue what we even ordered. I need no advice in this, as I am most likely older then you or the around the same age. If you would like to know just ask and I will tell you. None of our drinks had fruit or splashes of this and that. If, as you say, a bar that is only good at making straight up drinks on ice, then a heads up would be nice. As for your "advice" about liter of water.... I have this handled. You have no clue who we are and if we have reached " adulthood " but don't assume because when you ASSume you make an ASS out of yourself. Out of the 4 of us, our careers are..... RN/RRT, Patent Attorney, Owner of several moving companies and a Photographer. I know none of these are better then a bartender but we are all well versed in adulthood. Thank you though for your non-solicited advise.

Ah, The Horse You Came In On. One of my favorite places, although I unfortunately only get to visit it a couple times per year. Before I start my review, some fun facts about the place (I feel the need to pass these on to my fellow history geeks). The Horse is the oldest and longest running saloon in the United States, and also the last place Edgar Allen Poe was seen alive. Little bit of trivia knowledge for all the Yelpers. Now to the reviewing. First of all, I love the atmosphere. Dark, old timey décor (stone fireplace, long wooden bars) and seats that are shaped like saddles. As a former competitive equestrian, this made me chuckle. They have two bars, and a pretty large back room with table seating if you're hungry. Pretty extensive selection of drinks, including some of their home brewed Jack Daniel's cocktails. They also have something pretty unique, a Jack Daniel's club. You buy a membership and bottle, and from then on, no one can drink out of that specific bottle besides you. It would be like a sacrilege to serve it to another patron. I think that's pretty neat. The food is good, above average bar food in my opinion. They are always doing some kind of special on food and drinks, so if you're a bit cash poor, you can get some good food and cheap drinks almost any time of the day and week at The Horse. The bartenders are really friendly, and even when it's crowded you will not feel neglected by them. Actually the last time I was there, they had a party the night before and had some leftover cake, which the bartender gave me fo' free. They're good people like that. They almost always have live music, which generally is not offensively loud, but on Friday/ Saturday nights, it'll get a bit noisy. I happen to love The Horse. I know a lot of people think it's cheesy, but whatever. In a town where there are a lot of bars, this one sets itself apart in my opinion.

i just had to check this place out. i thought it would be much worse. granted i have only been here once and during the afternoon so im positive my experience is not the most usual, however the bartender was super cool dude who engaged in a conversation and got to tell me a bit about the city. natty boh. i had to get one of those. when in rome, no? then i had a good beer. it is not surprising that this bar looks like its loaded with old time stories and mystery. im curious to see what its like at night and even the whole area. i need to come back and check it out. hope not to be disappointed.

This is the worst bar, management only hires douche bags. We were harnessed when we were standing in line for no reason. Douche bags living on compliments don't go far, hire people with actual skills that can at least make my whiskey ginger ale.

Two places at the same location! Can't be beat! First, stop at "The Horse You Came In On" Saloon" for delicious jack infused drinks and live music. Next, visit their most recent expansion, "The Horse You Rode Out On" Cantina for tequila infused drinks and dancing which is right next door and connected inside the bars. I've been going to "the horse" (You Came In On) for years and it has always been a fun time. There's a live band sometimes and tvs to watch sports. The 2nd add-on brings a different vibe and area for people to drink at. The environment is dark, but not too dark, and trendy. The bar is lit up with pretty lights and the tvs are huge. The bartenders were instantly attentive and there were even outlets to charge your phone underneath the bar! Huge plus! On top of that, like I mentioned before, this bar is a tequila infusion bar. I had the jalapeno infusion margarita and phew it had a kick! The bartender made a point to warn me which I always appreciate in case you don't want anything too spicy and she was right.. it is not for one who likes mild. I loved it... one of the most intriguing drinks I've tasted in a while. They have 17 tvs to watch numerous games and plenty of seats. I LOVE that they connected the bars so you can go from bar to bar from the inside. Plenty of choices if you love both places. On the night we went, there was a dj playing dance music and plenty of people having fun. If dance music isn't your thing, you can always go across the bar to the "The Horse You Came In On" for live acoustic music. I loved the dual bar idea and both places seem to compliment each other perfectly. I will definitely have to come back again!

This was my last stop on this past Saturday. I was here around 9pm. The place was live. We were able to go to the back and get a stool at the bar. That was pure luck because the place was crowded. The music was pretty nice. They had live music being played. It was just enough and not too much. As soon as we sat at the bar the bartender was very attentive. We had drinks in a matter of seconds. I tried the apple infused jack which by the way was a great way to end my night along with some cheese sticks. This experience was great and I will be sure to return if I am in the area again.

I believe The Horse is technically the oldest dive bar in western world, it's been around since the 1700's. It's a cool place though, cheap eats and happy hour specials but nothing fancy. It's also possibly the loudest place in Fells Point as they always feature live-music when they're open. That said they sometimes try to jack you with a cover which there is no reason to pay - there are 1/2 a dozen other spots on Thames Street where you can catch live music with out paying a cover and it's basically the same local bands on rotation through out fells anyway.

I am writing two reviews about one night of drinking, and both are about Fireball. Talk about an all time personal low point. My previous review was about being overcharged for Fireball at Bar Cocina, we left there looking for a more authentic Baltimore experience for my DC transplants, and I guided them towards Horse. I'm not giving one star because I feel that is petty, but we got to Horse and ordered three shots of Fireball at the "cantina" side and were served something that was clearly not Fireball, After we ordered, the bartender walked out of eyesight and came back with the already poured shots (first red flag, not seeing the drink poured). After we slammed them like the soulless Fireball drinkers we were that evening, all three of us looked at each other and asked "what the f### was that." I would say the concoction was something along the lines of watered down cinnamon schnapps? If I was a gambling man (and from misspent college years bartending) I would put my money on some combination of schnapps and a splash of coke for coloring? I am rare to write bad reviews just to do a hatchet job on a place, but I am sitting here the next day still kind of bothered by being served some mystery cocktail that tasted like a poured out bar mat.

This bar is actually great during the day. We came here for an afternoon drink. There was plenty of seating, there are three bars in different locations and live music. A group of 7 was able to sit together and have a drink. It was energetic inside but we could still hear each other. We came back later at night to have a drink after dinner and were turned away because one of the guys had camo pants on. The sign on the door said no shorts below the knee. His shorts were just covering his knees but not low enough to justify turning someone away for "below the knee." When I asked the bouncer he said it was because his shorts were camo colored and the owner does not like camo. I know owner's can have preferences but that is not a legal reason to turn someone away from an establishment. It was disappointing and felt like a poor reason to not let someone in. No one in our group was drunk or rowdy and even though this place was great during the day, I have to knock it down for our night time experience.

We stopped by The Horse You Came In On Served up a tasty Jack infused shot So good it made us want to say, Hey Mon Of flavored Jack, options there are a lot The oldest pub in Baltimore you say Walk in the footsteps of raven boy Poe This bar's live music makes the day less grey, Wild spot that is sure to make you less low But be set to get ready for a squeeze For this place is always jammed- packed Crowd too much, just step outside for the breeze Refreshed, return to a beat joyous Jacked Poe whispers, my friend, this is the right place Drink with Edgar's ghost for a reveler's grace.

One of the bouncers is either very racist or on a power trip. Kicked someone out within 5 minutes for wearing a hat that wasn't on "straight" when his hat was actually on straight and there were many other patrons inside with sideway hats. Very rude service and will never go back.

And in conclusion.... This place feels like the feminine hygiene section at CVS because any way you look its just a bunch of douchebags. And then there are the old bouncers that are full of the roid juice. I mean come on, you're pushing 50, maybe its time to stop shooting up. I'd rather have a severe case of genital warts than ever return here. In fact, I might have them from brushing against the common skank on the way out the door.

If I could leave no stars I would. So this incident happened two separate nights I went to the horse you came in on. I get there between 9:30 and 9:45 and the bar tender tells me that they are no longer serving food. However before we paid to get in the bouncer said food was being served until 10pm. 20 minutes goes by after I asked about the food and a man brings out two trays of food to the front bar. We were at the back bar. I was really confused why we weren't able to order food. Then I ordered two long islands. One for myself and my girlfriend, who is black. The drinks tasted like sour mix and lemonade combined. I will never go back here. The service was horrible and I feel like there was segregation still working in effect. Maybe it was the racist staff, not sure what was going on there. The bar tender looked like a clan member. We are in Baltimore and you need to take that into consideration when serving your customers in a prominently black city. I have been here numerous times by myself and with a white crowd as well and recieved excellent service.

Came in for a quick after work beer and ended up staying. Great service and the staff is fun and friendly. My bartender Lindsay Smith made me feel welcome. She was very knowledgeable about tequilas and beers. Great staff makes for great service and makes people become regular customers. I'm am definitely a big fan of The Horse! Thank you Lindsay!

The first time I came in here, we walked in and walked right back out. The second time I came in here, we walked in, stood for a little bit, then walked right out. The third time I learned the secret. Do NOT com here before 10 or 11pm. The music sucks (OK, I hate country so maybe I'm biased) and the atmosphere is flat-out weird. A bizarre mix of people for sure and a little bit seedy feeling. But after you've wandered a few other bars and had a few drinks, this is an OK place to come. The music changes to fun dance music (when we were there it was a mix of DJ and live music) and the crowd is... well, still entertaining but better. This would never be my first choice, especially if I'm going to make the trek to Fells to go out (so many better places, I admit I'm more partial to something like Bond Street Social), but it does have it's place. And if you like country music, it's probably right up your alley. Also, apparently where Mark Twain had his last drink (or at least *a* drink?), so I suppose that's cool? P.S. Not to be confused with Horse With No Name (which I always used to) which has just recently shut down in Canton.

This place is awesome . Live music all day and it's a great bar . They actually have 4 bars inside but it still has a cozy feel to it . Great drinks and beer selections . Didn't try the food but I will once I return . Bartender was cool and the music was good .

One visit == A nice place to visit in the early evening. A bit of a sports bar it seems. Great selection of beverages. Parties would be great there. It is a "divey" bar in many ways but had good service. And some interesting history. We will be back again, at least for an early evening visit before some music. f8 and be there.

Stopped by for a quick drink to start the night after dinner. The interior is pretty cool and the place was fairly crowded, which is always a good sign to me. It is a Jack Daniels bar, with some pretty cool sounding infused whiskeys. The bar leads into another bar on the other side that was more of a dance-type bar, which was fun and provided a fun change of pace. I personally am not a whiskey drinker of any sort. I asked for a beer and a Tennessee Honey and Sprite. Oh boy oh boy...the bartender did not go easy on the whiskey. That was probably the strongest well drink I have ever had. Definitely a good bang for your buck. The bar atmosphere itself was kinda meh. The two different styles of bars definitely conflicted a bit; but if you're not sure where you want the night to go, this is for sure a cool place to stop by. Update: In response to the owner's comment, my party was not on our cellphone throughout the night. The experience was meh because there was conflicting music being played where we were standing and tables were being moved out of the bar area. It was hard to tell what we should be paying attention to or what we should be doing. Perhaps we got there too early for a Saturday night and things were not in full swing. I'm sure on any other night the experience was as described by you; it just was not the night for us.

Sharpen your game with the best weekend nightlife on Fells' cobblestone. Can't imagine what it looks in daylight, never even seen it open then. At night it's a low ceilinged orgy of bongos and boners, the latter dominating the sausage fest as last call approaches after the females have fled. Booze splashes all over the floor as 3-4 people push through the sardine-packed crowd to hover in front of the bongos. That is the "dance floor". Saddle seats at the front are annoying and there's some weird decor you'll probably miss thanks to cant-see-hand-in-face type dark lighting. The back's where it's at, more space with exposed brick and deceptive mirrors. Stacks of winter coats are jammed atop 1-2 barrels--no coat racks, no space. Get the infused JD and work your action. Expect concert level loudness. Stay on the beaten cobblestone and walk past if any of that offends.

Stopped in last night after a fine dinner for a nightcap w/ colleagues, LOVE this place. Good singer & bartender Lindsay has an excellent knowledge of fine tequilas, took her recommendation & bought her favorite when I got off the plane this afternoon. Will be back; what time does the kitchen close?

Probably one of the most fun chill bars I've been to in a long time. Came for fells point ladies night. Drinks were cheap, about $3/rail drink. Definitely going again during the weekend The wednesday crowd for ladies night was ok...pretty good for a wednesday but not too much dancing...more people just standing around. I think guys think its a good time to pick up girls but they're not too aggressive which is nice. The DJ was good. Fun night overall!

The inner poet in me was happy to come to the place where Edgar Allan Poe had his last drink. Can you believe that this place is still in existence ?? That's amazing in itself. Lol. Anyway, this was a fun , throwback of bars long ago. It looked like a saloon from an old movie. The bar stools resembled a horse saddle and the live music made the atmosphere more festive. Our bartender was friendly and informed me about the Jack Daniels infused shots and drinks! Drunken deliciousness ! I didn't get drunk but you see where I am going with this . I would definitely return to this saloon/ bar if I am ever in this area again !

The scene is great. If you try to take a water with you the bouncer is rude. He made me cry because he wouldn't let me take my water. Rude. Awful. Won't return.

Apparently this is a bar where you can't take a smoke break and get back in. Which..if you're a lousy bar that only exists to get messed up in...what are you doing? My group of friends was there to drink, dance, and tip fairly, and you've lost all of our business. If your clientele can't even get back in to close their tabs, you're doing something wrong. No wonder Edgar Allan Poe left.

  • Yu D.

It's a nice place and I've been there a couple of times, worth at least a four star, maybe five if you love their music. But I just cannot believe we had a cigarette break and we cannot get back in for no reason. A "we are closing soon" or any excuse will be fine, but at least let us know so we did not have to wait outside in the cold weather for nothing.

I came into the Horse on a Tuesday night (my weekend) and was very impressed. The atmosphere was great, and the music was good too. Our Bartender Lindsay was the bees knees and gave us their poblano pepper tequila and it was amazing. She kept up with everything we needed and was more than pleasant to be around. I will definitely be returning soon.

Bouncer kicked us out because my son had a winter hat on. When we checked in outside with guy looking at our id nothing was said. people including the entertainment were wearing hats of all kinds. It's a shame because we were having a good time.

This bar has so much character from their decor to the choices of drinks. The bartender was fun to talk with and knew how to make the drinks. The whiskey is infused for at least 2 weeks and they have about 5 different choices. The crab cake balls are delicious too! Cool atmosphere with the history of Edgar Allen Poe.

Stopped here on a Monday to end a "weekend" date night. The infused cinnamon tequila was quite good, strawberry was not and neither were worth $8. However, the live music was great, our bartender was friendly, talkative and enjoyable and the beers were tasty and an ok price. We will come back for the live music and maybe some jalapeño tequila. I also enjoyed the decor and atmosphere. I can see how Friday and Saturday this place probably becomes a college nightmare.

Great spot to get a drink, dance a bit, and plus the history of this place dates back to the time Edgar Allen Poe had his last drink before he died, back in 1849! They have a decent live band, and the night I was there they were playing alot of California surf rock, and reminded my hood back in Cali :) I will be for sure coming back here soon!!!

I've been coming to the horse for many years. I have been to the bar for the night life and it's a blast. Crowded, great music, expensive but very good drinks. Honestly, everywhere in Fells are expensive and if I'm going to pay I'd like to have a good drink vs a watered down mess (like some other places in Fells) There is live music earlier on in the night then they start playing club music later. It's a great mix. I also work across the street and honestly the food options in Fells is disappointing. Most of the food is greasy and expensive (14 dollars for a burger). About a year ago I decided to try the horse's food. Wow was I surprised. The food is great. Not greasy (unless you order something that should be greasy) moderately priced, and fast. It's actually my favorite spot in Fells. Their buffalo wings are hands down the best in the city. I've tried about 6 different things on the menu and I've liked everything (and I'm picky so that's saying a lot). The staff is friendly and attentive. I've gotten both carry out and dined in. The thing about this bar that impresses me the most is the cleanliness. I've walked out of places before because of the filth. Even the rest room is clean!

I did a walk-thru of THYCIOS just to see what it was like (my first time) and I must comment on the friendliness and courtesy of the front Bartender that day. I have forgotten his name, but he really made me feel welcome and impressed by his coolness. He even offered to refill my mostly empty plastic cup of Iced Water I had procured earlier from another Fells establishment. He told us some about the history of The Horse, as well. Being from Salisbury, I guess I am not quite used to nice and genuine people, so it was definitely a breath of fresh air. Though, I did not party there, I still got some sense of the coolness that would await one if they chose to get down there. Historic establishment.

Fruit steeped Jack Daniels whiskey! Need I say more? Great drinks at pretty standard Baltimore bar pricing. Normally has a small band playing live music in the evenings with a great dance floor on the weekends.

The reason you should come to this bar: the Jack Daniels infused bar. The End. I loved this infusion chemistry, where I can just tell the bartender to surprise me with something fabulous and no matter the concoction....it turns out perfect AND strong! I recommend the fire ball Jack with the cinnamon kick! The whole place looks likes a saloon, very appropriate considering the bar's name. The ENTIRE place is doing wall to wall bottles of Jack Daniels, old pics, swords and dusty looking stuff. The people were cool, there is was a live band playing cover music (with an awful singer). The history of the bar alone (read previous reviews) is reason enough to come here. I recommend going down the street to eat at Bond Street some tapas and then come here to end the night happy!

The Horse, as a bar, is one of those places you always finish the evening. When the house lights come on at 1:45 at last call and you realize you're at The Horse, you know you've had a good night. If you're looking for a fun bar to drink, dance, and people-watch, this is the place to go! Overall, it's definitely one of those places you go to just to say you've been there, but you will have a good time. The age group is certainly mixed as the crowd is either really young, old, or part of a biker gang (somehow every time I've been there, there's always a group reppin' their motorcycle club). Drinks are strong and reasonably priced. The bartenders are quick with making drinks, but not always the friendliest around. Hell, who am I kidding? I KNOW I'll be back next time I am in Fells Point.

MY FAVORITE BAR Live music all of the time After eating at the oh so yummy Oyster House down the street, we dropped in to have a drink at this interesting looking bar. Per one of the bartenders, this place is the oldest bar still in operation (since 1775). Pretty neat fact. It's a Jack bar so Jack Daniels galore. They also offer flavor-infused Jack but I must say, pretty pricey! Barstools are shaped as riding saddles & they have live music. Interesting & fun night, for sure.

Just happened in this place during a day trip to Baltimore. We were there at a slow time of day and loved visiting with the staff. Atmosphere was wonderful. Food and service were wonderful. Highly recommend!!!

Stopped in with a group of friends while we were visiting Baltimore. It was around noon and we were waiting for a table at the Blue Moon (right around the corner) so we stopped in for a quick drink. The history and the fact that it was featured on Drinking Made Easy meant it was a no brainer. Glad we did. The Jack Daniels infusions are awesome! (Let me preface this by saying I do not do well with shots of anything. I love liquor and can sip good Scotch or Vodka any time, but every time I try to take a shot it just wants to come right back out.) The infusions are so smooth that there's no burn and the alcohol taste is nearly indistinguishable. So effing good! We each tried a different infusion and nobody in the group was disappointed. Even if it is a gimmick, its worth trying at least once for no reason other than to say you did. Saddle style bar stools, wooden everything and Natty Boh bottles made this a winner in my book.

My husband and I and another couple stumbled upon this place while visiting Fells Point. I really like the atmosphere. I'm not a big country music fan but there was live music here that I really enjoyed called The Jimmy Charles Band. We enjoyed a few cocktails, some appetizers, and the music. The place is large with 4 separate bars. I loved looking at the signs and decor on the walls. The bathrooms were really nice and spotless! If we ever visit Fells Point again, we will definitely go back here.

  • Jen M.

*Sigh" I really wish I could give Horse a better review, being the oldest continually-operating bar in the US, but I must be honest. This spot devolves to desperate girls throwing themselves at drunk meatheads quickly. Add unsuspecting tourists and corporate jagoffs running up their business accounts and you've got a recipe for a crummy night. The music and decor are country-style cliche, and the atmosphere is a step down from last call at a frat party. When I walked past last weekend they had velvet ropes out front and I had to laugh out loud. There are too many good bars in Fells to get stuck here.

    (2)
  • Joseph C.

Whether or not I like it here really depends on the night. It can be a little cramped and hot, but with the right band it can be awesome too. The food is average bar food. A better beer selection and quality food would probably bump this place up to 4 stars. They're so busy though they probably don't care to improve. Why fix what isn't broken?

    (3)
  • Lauren L.

Horse you Came In On is a great place to see a bumping live band doing all your favorite covers of recent and throwback songs. I would think its one of the only other bars in fells you can go dancing and still have a more "laid back" atmosphere. It does get a bit crowded- like can't move crowded but again, this is one of- if not the oldest saloon in the country still operating so the history definitely rings through. It makes it have character and has a great story behind it. With the crowding, you may find yourself waiting outside on a Friday-Saturday night. They do let "some" people in the side doors so be prepared to get angry when you've been waiting and someone all of a sudden gets in. I think thats the only part that just gets under my skin as a local. Overall, definitely go here. The drinks are cheap and strong, their infused J.D. shots are amazing (and unique) and always a good time.

    (4)
  • Kalee C.

The service was fast and friendly, the drinks were strong and definitely your money's worth and I love the live music!

The food is great. And by food, I mean the liquid kind that makes you loopy. This is a fun place, unless you don't like having fun. Live music. Good crowd.

  • B M.

What a wonderful happenstance! Wandered in on Friday afternoon .... loved the vibe. Great music; and then a great band took over. Drinks were strong and cold and wet - just the way I like them. The infused J.D. shots are amazing - straight up or over ice. The crab pretzel and buffalo soldiers were tasty and served hot. Just a perfect way to spend a couple hours kicking back or straddling a saddle.

Went on a Friday night after having dinner across street. Let's just say, there comes a point in life when you realize there are some places you just shouldn't go/don't belong. I don't do bars but really wanted to go to a bar and have a drink. I've heard about this spot and wanted to check it out...it was nothing special. Bartender had absolutely no personality, but I could tell he liked to work out( he had some serious muscles). Ordered shots, drank and left. I probably could have been persuaded into something else but no one bother to ask. Left after being there for less than 10mins. Disclaimer: those inside looked to be having a good time drinking and listening to the live music(which I mistaken for karaoke).

    (1)
  • Jessie R.

Fun bar. They have a section for dancing, a section for sitting and a section for the bar which makes it more convenient to do stuff without bumping into people. There is a good crowd mix so anyone can have fun there. Prices are decent.

  • Justin K.

Being a history nerd, I had to check out this bar. It is of course one of the oldest bars in the country. I also had some friends in town who are also history nerds and needed to see this bar. Ok, so that might not be true, we were 3 sheets to the wind from a beer festival and Max's so we sort of stumbled over. There is some truth to this story. If I do remember correctly there was a tour guide in the bar and he dropped some knowledge on my friend and I about the history of this bar (see Photo). Do I remember what it was...no. It has something to do with horses and we were standing in stables....?? We had fun; the live music was alright, the crowd was fun and there was a guy making balloon hats! I can't comment on the beer selection because at that point I should have cut myself off. I would not usually go to a place like this but the history is what really pulled me in!

    (2)
  • Christina H.

I've been a few times and it's been decent. The place is tiny and there is usually a live band playing cover songs crammed into one of the corners by the first bar. Sometimes people dance in front of the band, but there is not much room. Wednesdays is ladies' night, complete with a dj and $5 bottomless drinks for the ladies. Make sure you specify that you would like a $5 cup or you will get charged more. I was ordering drinks for my friend and me and the bartender charged me $20. I told him that I wanted the $5 cup, so he made me two more drinks and then told me my total was $30. I told him I didn't want the other drinks, just the cheaper ones and he told me I had to pay for the other ones since he made them. In hindsight, I should have walked away and went to another bartender since he was so rude.

    (2)
  • Jessie L.

Fun place!! There's a band that plays live music which is fun to dance around to. The drinks are good and the people all seem to be down to earth and pretty fun to hang around. Some cool fun facts are that this was the last bar that Edgar Allen Poe was seen in before his death and it's one of oldest (if not the oldest) bars still operating in the US, operating since 1775. It even survived through the Prohibition era, when it turned in to a "soda pop bar". Another HUGE plus..... there is a HOT HOT HOT bartender that works the front bar. That will probably be the main reason for my return. Ha! Definitely drop into the Horse when in town!

    (3)
  • Kevin J.

This bar was cool, had bottles of jack everywhere. Jack is my go to drink so I may be a little biased. Their bartenders were friendly and made strong drinks. The drinks were average price for the area. Negatives- the place tends to get a little crowded, the music is a little too loud and they have this mirror that looks like an entrance way. I almost walked into this mirror twice and knocked myself out! If you are in the Fells Point area, stop in here for your crawl.

    (4)
  • jason c.

Really cool place for live music and good JACK! They have these Jack Daniels infused shots that are awesome! Bartenders were really cool and drink prices were reasonable for the area. It does get a little crowded in there but who goes to place thats dead ?

    (5)
  • Meagan P.

The female bartenders were more interested in flirting with the one male bartender than doing their job. I ordered a simple drink and it was made incorrectly. When asked for a correction, she was not interested in making it right. She was rude, unhelpful, and didn't make me want to stay past my one drink. Drink: 1 star. Service: 1 star. Atmosphere/Ambiance/History: 3 stars. Glad I went, but wouldn't ever go back.

I've lived in Baltimore for a little over 2 years and this place has become easily one of my favorites in the city. I'd say it's the right size for a night out in Baltimore aka "Smalltimore". Cherry Infused JD is by far the best shot, you will surprise everyone in your party with that. They always have a live band and the crowd has a mix of good looking people and drunken debauchery.

    (4)
  • Amanda C.

Cute name, kitschy decorations, and a decent amount of space. The bartender looked at me with disbelief when I ordered a whiskey and diet coke. Prices were reasonable for most drinks which was the case in most Baltimore bars. There seem to be an endless stream of cover bands playing mid nineties break out indie hits like "Crash Into Me" by Dave Matthews and "I'll Be There for You," by the Rembrandts(Friend's t.v. theme). This place really isn't the type of bar I usually go for, that said I can seem why people might go here when spending a night in Fell's Point.

    (2)
  • Jeffrey P.

Cool bar with a neat vibe, Jack the bartender is very nice and helpful. Where else in the city can you get 8 different flavors of infused Jack Daniels. Also if you really like Jack, you can buy a bottle for $75 and they will keep it safe for everytime that you visit. Also the supposed last place Edgar Allen Poe drank before dying and the oldest saloon in the USA

    (4)
  • Beekeeni N.

Live music - they make their own version of "infused" liquors. Try the cinnamon one if you like Fireball, their version is less sweet.

Usually good live music! Cheap drinks, usually quite busy on Thursday Friday and Saturday. Young scene, lots of energy, very loud.

    (3)
  • Timothy M.

Positives - they serve jack Daniels - fantastic location - good looking bartenders - live music can be good Negatives - its way too loud at night - they let way to many people in the place - prices are very high This is an okay bar if you go early in the night but there's nothing about this place that makes me wanna go back every night.

I hate to give The Horse a bad rating, I do. The music on the weekends has always impressed me. Yes, it gets packed and tinitus-causingly loud, but the cover bands are always of the "holy crap- I love this song" variety, and the bartenders are generally amusingly ascerbic. The problem I have is with the recent beer price increase. The Horse serves mugs of beer, which are considerably less than a pint, and serves them for around $6 each. $6 for a mug of the house ale? Pur-leeze. Next...

This pub never fails! Live music, good times, great people. When all other pubs in fells fail, I go to this place. It does get a little packed though.. but so does every good pub in the neighborhood

  • Lauren S.

This is usually the last place I'll go when in Fells. The bar is a little too bro-ish for my taste, but the drinks are cheap and they have live music almost all the time. Still, it's just not my style.

    (2)
  • Ryan F.

Let me start by saying, it's rare you'll find me in Baltimore As a fine Virginia Gentleman, I consider Maryland to be a sort of backwater wasteland That all having been said, I'd like to let ya know that THYCIO is a bangin' bar in the Fell's Point area. As others have mentioned the live music is generally rockable The drinks tend to be potent The women tend to be loose So c'mon in on that horse!

    (4)
  • Melody C.

Seriously I don't understand the negative reviews at all. It's not cramped or small, at all. The place is big! There's a whole back area (did reviewers below not walk around?) with it's own bar. The decor is awesome and different with everything made of wood (as in real bark on the ceiling beams!) and the dark western feel. Up front there's a whole wall of Jack Daniels bottles and mixtures of infused whiskey in large mason jars you can get shots of. I love the rotating saddle bar stools, so cool and actually comfortable! We came in on a Friday evening and there was a pair of guys playing live covers. I was surprised as they were actually good so we ended up giving them a tip. Some snotty girls and douchey guys around, but that's any bar in this area (except maybe Ledbetters). I really don't see anything wrong with this place and would love to come back a few more times to see if my thoughts will change. Just enjoy yourself and bring your own friends, it's a great bar.

  • Alex S.

Flashback to the scene in "Dirty Work" where Artie Lange and the frat guy are arguing over a girl in a bar. The uninterested girl tells them to fight it out. I was reminded of this as it played out in front of me at the Horse, except it was two dudes wearing Ed Hardy or Affliction shirts and the girl looked like J-Wow. These two go at it and are both ejected. She continued to stand as if she couldn't care less. This is really my only distinct memory of this place. The constants here are that there's almost always live music, a crowd, and at least a couple of fights. You pretty much have to come in a group to enjoy it.

  • Mark M.

Tourist trap dive bar for college aged kids with fake IDs who are too dumb to realize that it's stupid to pay a cover to get into a bar. Average booze selection, average beer selection. Okay prices for Fells, but certainly no bargain. The AC and heat were always on the fritz. I've never ordered food here. The place is so gross that I'd be afraid of whatever they served. It claims that it's America's oldest consecutively running saloon (circa 1775). Unfortunately for them, that claim is false. Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop in New Orleans verifiably holds that record dating back to 1722. So you guys are only off by about 50+ years...but why squabble over details when you can invent your own reality? I am willing to bet, however, that you probably haven't cleaned your bathrooms since the 1700's.

    (1)
  • Chaka H.

The horse is your quintessential dive bar. If you're looking for cheap drinks, pretty good live bands, fun bartenders and a little room to cut a rug, this is your place! I must also say that having a friend work here definitely improves the experience.

    (3)
  • Mark C.

This bar claims to be the last place Edgar Allen Poe was seen before his mysterious death. I talked to the bartender and she was very kind in telling me a few neat stories about Poe and claimed the place was haunted. I asked what Poe's drink of choice was and she said Jack Daniels. Wait.... Jack Daniels founded: 1875 Edgar Allen Poe died: 1849 Everyone here was incredibly nice but I've gotta call corporate bullsh*t on this one, yet again Jack Daniels is just trying to cash in on revisionist history and disappointingly The Horse You Came In On took the kickback and lined their walls with Jack Daniels bottles and claimed it was Poe's drink of choice. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

  • Rodge B.

A little off the beaten path, but definitely worth a look. Everytime I've been here, I've been completely wasted, so I can't really offer any other comments other than there is some nice scenery on the female front. The prices aren't too bad from what I remember.

    (4)
  • Min K.

it's a small place but they play good music (top 40s/hiphop) and you have a good time. the place is definitely casual but guys cannot get in with a plain white-t. crowd is predominantly black/hispanic.

  • Nicole B.

We stopped in here around 7pm on a Sat night. The place was pretty packed and music was playing. People were dancing everywhere! I felt like i was at a bar in key west! the bar stools are like saddles which was cool and we were lucky to find seats. we didnt have food so i cant say anything about that but good happy hour on menus. i just can't imagine how much more crowded this place would get later in the evening on a sat night!

I came in on a Saturday, early afternoon, shortly after they opened, so I can say nothing about the crowd, but it's a cute, kitschy spot. I love the saddle seats at the bar, the bartender was super cute and sweet , and there was a pretty decent guy singing and playing the guitar. The drinks were cheap and so that makes the Horse You Came in On good in my book.

The proud history brought me here to this time-honored baltimore dive. I found this place to be sort of a second home after spending several weeks in Baltimore. Its a standard bar with nothing special, just the average full bar and typical american beer selection.

This place is small and cramped with an substandard selection of beer and liqour considering it is one of the oldest bars in Baltimore. I went in to enjoy myself but really only found myself enjoying other people and their stupidity. I saw on the one occassion I was there, 4 people try to walk into the other side of the bar only to realize it was a mirror and they looked like total fools as they tried to play it off. I would only recommend this bar to people who want a cramped subway style experience.

Its more like the WHORE you rode in on. I'm sure I'm not the first one to say that, but dammit if it isn't true to every letter. I was wearing a simple T-Shirt and shorts, I hadn't felt this out of place since high school. The only perk was that I knew one of the bartenders and she bought me a drink.

Visiting Baltimore on business and decided to check out the inner harbor on a Tuesday night...not much going on. A some what local resident suggested we check out this place... Got there around 9:30 ish...wasn't too crowded, got a table pretty easy. There was a band playing...I gotta say these guys were awesome! There really wasn't too special about their musical talent but they engaged the folks in the bar which really made it fun! There were 8 folks in our group and we were having a wonderful time drinking and a little dancing. The food is not very good...we ordered a few appetizers to soak up the booze.

On weekend nights, it's really a party here when the house musicians (Ed and Frank) play. Very busy, hard to get to the other end, and hard to get to a bathroom. Looking for a party? Go here.

I love the band on Saturday nights. The bartenders were friendly, attentive and the prices were right.

After a great game at Camden Yards, a few friends and I made out way over to Fells Pointwalk up to the door, and pay a $3 cover. Not unreasonable at all, and the live music sounded great. But as soon as we walked into the bar, it was like walking into a sauna. It was a nice summer night outside - maybe 70 degrees and breezy - but inside this bar it was at least 80 degrees, and incredibly humid/stale air. The bar was so steamy that I saw one bartender wearing a sweat band on his arm. We could only stand the heat for 1 round of drinks, as by then everyone in our group was dripping in sweat. There appeared to be a decent-sized air conditioning duct running through the whole bar, but it felt like it was barely running. "The Horse" looks like it must be a great place on a cold winter night, but I'd stay away on a summer night. If they tuned up the a/c (or even just ventilation), this place would be incredible...but it's tough to enjoy the atmosphere and the music when you are sweating bullets.

The Horse You Came In On is a blast! Conveniently, it is located bascially in my backyard. Easy walk to get there, and even easier walk home :) I always have a great time listening to the live music, dancing, and, unfortunately, singing. My only complaint is I typically get woken up every night when they take out the bottles....But they recycle....and that's a plus because most bars don't!

If you are gonna sit at the bar, be ready to sit on an uncomfortable saddle as a chair. The concept is different but not the brightest idea. Good thing there were two attractive blonde bartenders while we were there to distract us from the seats.

A true Baltimore staple that I would recommend be visited by locals and tourists alike. A great staff and even better party. The owner takes a lot of pride in making sure that the guest are having a great time. I can't say anything bad, go out of your way to make the trip.

I've never entered this bar sober. Therefore, my experience is definitely biased through some dense beer goggles. I've come to conclude that the Horse is the best place to end a night soaked in alcohol from Fells. It's a wonderful place to stumble into. I haven't had to pay a cover (although there was a $10 cover on Halloween). The live bands usually play covers of songs, otherwise they play pretty decent top40 music for a straight bar in Fells. Drinks are decently priced, but if I were you, I'd get my alcohol at Leadbetter's across the street and dip to the Horse for its music and fun atmosphere! I gave it four stars because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be crazy about it if I came in there sober. It's a magical place in my alcohol-soaked heart.

Very tasty, cold beer. So busy we couldn't get a food order in, so not sure how good the food is.

they allow the place to get a little too crowded, but great alcohol selection, good music, and pretty girls.
