A friend of mine and I went to Metropolitan for brunch; we were excited to try something new and thought this quaint little restaurant would be the perfect choice. How wrong we were. When we walked in, the downstairs area was packed and tables were either occupied or dirty. We went upstairs to sit, only to be told that the section was closing. This was fine, but the waitress was less than friendly (i.e. surly) and her demeanor made us both feel rather unwelcome. Regardless, we went downstairs to eat, but only found dirty tables. We sat down at one, thinking that someone would be by to clean it and take our orders. We were wrong. We waited for over ten minutes without an employee so much as blinking in our direction. This is rather odd, given the fact that one of the waitresses already knew we were there. In fact, we saw her pass by our table repeatedly. I don't like sitting at a dirty table, but understand when wait staff get busy; I waited tables for over five years. There was no excuse, however, for the staff to ignore us completely. If one of the wait staff had merely said, "Hello, I'm really busy, but will be with you in a moment," I would have waited without hesitation or dismay. But after waiting and waiting for service, we became annoyed and thought it best to leave. Why stay somewhere where you are made to feel unwelcome? This is a shame because the food did look quite good. Instead, we headed to Fells Point to Slainte where we knew we would be treated well, and we were. It's unfortunate that the Metropolitan staff treat potential customers so poorly. Perhaps we simply had a bad waitress, but I don't know if that will justify trying it a second time.

Nice spot for dinner and/or drinks. Have come a couple times for both with my boyfriend and we both have always enjoyed our food, drinks and the service has always been impeccable. I was not a huge fan of Jane's Ultimate Salad, all the fruit and such was cut up into teensy tiny pieces, but all the other food and drinks I've had there have been great.

In a short period of time, this place has grown from the most reliable and comfortable place I know in Fed Hill to get a decent (and decently priced) beer to my overall favorite spot in Baltimore. Not only is the bar wildly appealing, with plenty of dark wood and a comfortable volume level of diners chatting and music playing, but the food is massively satisfying. Grouper with leeks and shallots over Israeli couscous is beyond perfect, and spicy cajun penne with shrimp and sausage is the kind of silly/indulgent dish I'd never order anywhere, but it's done so so well here that I can't resist. Come for the $5 Hennepin and comfy bar space, stay for the extensive and deftly executed food menu.

I went for brunch/lunch. Wide selection. Crab omelette and fajitas were delicious. Bread pudding exceeded expectations, but stay away from the strawberry short cake -- more like a cake than traditional strawberry shortcake.

Really nice bar /coffee house / restaurant located in Federal Hill just a few blocks away from the harbor. They have a really good spinach salad and pita pizza. The service was good, no wait for a table. The menu has a great selection of sandwiches, pastas, salads, pizza, etc. There is a bar downstairs where you can get drinks and a coffee and smaller dining room upstairs. They also have a few table outside on the sidewalk with with waiter service which is nice. Definitely a nice place to stop in for a meal.

I should have known from the filthy glass on the front door that this place was going to be bad. The whole restaurant needs a scrub down. Sticky surfaces, unidentified nastiness on the walls in the bathroom, filthy floors. The food was sad. Sysco everything. Eggs that tasted like fake margarine, hardened smoked salmon, limp salad greens, pinkish, tough tomatoes in the middle of summer (!), bagels of flavorless cardboard and the saddest, SADDEST egg sandwich I've ever experienced. No cheese, dry, over-cooked egg with dry-ass sausage with no butter or anything to moisten it. WTF people. Simply- this food is not made with love. It's potentially a cute place ruined by lack of care or cleanliness and worse- it poses as a city-style 'cafe' in a cute metro neighborhood. GET TO WORK OR GET NEW OWNERSHIP METROPOLITAN! (I put this same review on Google too because I was so disappointed in our experience at Metropolitan that I HAD to call them out and let them know- some people in this city actually have higher standards for food- even if it's just eggs. Go to Woodberry Kitchen or Clementine and get some pointers.)

My husband and I stayed at Scarborough Fair B&B, just a short walk to the Metropolitan. We decided to check it out for drinks and dinner on a Saturday night. We were nervous that it would be too busy, but we were happy to find seats available when we arrived around 7 pm. We started with drinks and an appetizer of crab deviled eggs. I had Tempranillo (by the glass) and he had a few craft beers he enjoyed. They have such a huge menu! You're sure to find something you like. For dinner my husband had the grilled tuna with veggies & couscous. I had the crab & shrimp pasta. I asked for Alfredo sauce instead of sun dried tomato. The waitress didn't seem too pleased about the change but said they could do it. The pasta was AMAZING. It's Baltimore so you expect the crab to be delicious (which it was) but the Alfredo sauce was some of the best I've ever had. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. There was zucchini & squash in the pasta. Writing this review is making me want to go back and eat it again! I highly recommend this place. On a nice day try to sit by the big open windows.

Made the mistake of coming here for brunch today. My boyfriend and I decided to give it another chance despite a bad experience last time (and the fact that there was a long wait at the place we usually go). We both ordered eggs Benedict which came with a side of hash browns. His eggs were not runny at all. I was skimped on the Canadian bacon - got about half the amount of what he got. The English muffins were dry. Then to top it all off the hash browns were inedible. We both love breakfast potato products but could not eat more than a bite of these. We will not be coming back!

I really enjoyed my small brunch here. I wasn't too hungry so I scaled back my usual brunch binge and had some coffee and some shared food. I loved the self serve, free refill coffee. No refills would be ridiculous but being able to refill as needed was great. The food was good but nothing too memorable. We split a veggie sandwich and a salad with chicken but less than a week later I can't recall anything about either except that I was satisfied and left thinking that I wanted to come back with a larger appetite. The atmosphere was cool: typical wood everywhere Baltimore pub styling. Service was good as well. I'm looking forward to returning.

One of my spots! The food is always on point - highlights to me include the ladykiller salad, the green lip mussels, any and all wraps (especially the jenny), and the spicy crab and scallop app. It's all good, though! As for drinks - there isn't a better place in federal hill for beer. Bruce has his delicious constants like Unibroue's Blanche De Chambly & the Bavarian Classic Schnieder Weisse but rotates through so much good beer! You'll never be bored. He has firkin night every Thursday and the firkin is different each week. He also has the tastiest wines and a great selection of big bottles of cider. Right now he is carrying Millstone, which is a local cider & is wonderful. I can't speak highly enough about this place and I always recommend it for any time but they really do a spectacular brunch if you're looking for a brunch spot on the weekend. The $5 Mimosa with bourbon is always a good choice :)

A month ago, I had the shrimp, beans & rice which was fine, if a little salty. Tonight, the weather being warmer, I thought to combine a salad with the smoked fish platter, and ordered the beet and arugula salad. The salad would probably have been fine if I had tasted the overly sweet balsamic dressing before spooning some over the greens. With the dressing, the effect was cloying. The fish platter was meh--fairly tasteless fish, an unappetizing dip, and not enough crackers. I guess there's a reason the place wasn't packed on a Saturday night

The place is charming and unique - a coffee house, bar and restaurant. We were sad the outdoor tables were taken when we arrived but we were promptly accommodated inside. The food was great, the beer list was decent and my margarita was delicious but the service left much to be desired. We waited way too long for someone to take our order and when that was done, it seemed like I had to grab the server's attention a few times when my husband's beer was gone. To their credit, they did replace my meal as I ordered the wrong thing. But, at the end, as soon as we finished, the server was ready with our check and didn't even ask if we wanted dessert. This is one of my biggest pet peeves as it signifies that they can't have us leave soon enough. The place certainly wasn't busy and there were plenty of empty tables, so she could've asked if we wanted dessert. Overall, I'd still go here for food and drinks and hope you get a better server!

I recently spent a week in Baltimore and ate crab cakes every night. Metropolitans were, hands down, the best. Very cute space that's a coffee house during the day and wine bar at night. If it's nice out, sit by the huge open windows. The wines are fairly priced and their menu -whoa! It's ridiculously extensive. Although I realllly wanted the crab deviled eggs, others in my party were not of the egg-eating type. Entree wise, I went with the crab cake platter, which did not disappoint. It came with a side of veggies and mashed potatoes and while I love me some mashed taters, these tasted rather instant. It's all good though, because what the mashed potatoes lacked, the crab cake made up for! Definitely a nice local spot to hit up if you're in town and want to explore a neighborhood other than the inner harbor.

Went here for the first time this weekend. The space is small, but not uncomfortably so. The beer list is solid and the bartenders were super friendly. I definitely will come back!!

The food here is reallllly good. Never had a meal that was NOT cooked to perfection! The curry chicken chowder was so delicious I couldn't even believe it! Crab cakes are great, scallops are great, shrimp skewers are great...you get the picture! I also love the wine selection here. Highly recommend Metropolitan!

We take all are out of town friends here for brunch after a night of drinking. It has that old feel of Baltimore (in a good way) with the exposed brick and wood floors. You can go to a few places for brunch in Fed Hill but this place has a lot of seating. Service can be a little slow at times but just enjoy the coffee bar while you wait for your food. Also went here for lunch and a beer and was not disappointed. Had the chicken chipotle wrap...delicious!

Their food is absolutely incredible! One of my favorite places in the area. The only reason I took off a star is because the crowd here is generally regulars and, at times, they can get a little obnoxious. The food really is good enough to look past that.

Went here last night for the first time and YUM!! I don't think I've ever looked at a menu and ordered the very first item listed - but how could I pass on a caramelized onion and goat cheese pizza w/arugula?!?!? It was utterly delicious!!! Scrumptious! Definitely an item I'll come to crave (and since I don't live anywhere near downtown, will probably try to make at home!) I was also very pleased to see SO MANY vegetarian options - veggie chili, fried tofu, etc. and main dishes too that all sounded amazing! I'll def be back, but likely not soon enough!

A decent restaurant in Federal Hill. We where able to get in no problem after an Orioles game without waiting. There is a nice beer and wine selection. The menu is large and varied. I had the penne with fresh asparagus. I thought this was tasty and it was served hot. It had just a touch too much oil in the sauce. I also had the beet and arugula salad. This was very good with lots of goat cheese. The other dishes at the table all looked good and there were no complaints. I would go here again. Recommended.

How can what is a diner menu with European decor and ambiance work? Not sure, don't care, and I keep coming back, again and again. It hits every palate on the face of the earth. Have vegetarians? Only red meat lovers? Pescetarian? Just want a burger? Does not matter everyone will be happy. I have been for breakfast/brunch, lunch, and dinner. It always hits the spot. Their coffee for breakfast is great, though it is slightly annoying that you need to go downstairs to fill your own cup. Their prime rib special in the winter - amazing.

Sadly not a fan. Super awkward host, basically left to our own to find a seat. Getting yelled at by the bartender to sit as our group of 6 debated a big table or 2 tables of 3....not so fun. The food was fine but really not anything special. Had the steak and shrimp platter, both if which were okay but a bit bland. This was accompanied by flavorless broiled veggies and rice. Tried the fries which were tasty shoestring thin fries. Overall the food was average = 3 stars Service was unfriendly :( = 1 star

We went there for brunch on a Sunday afternoon. The food was ok and the waitress was grumpy. We were lucky enough to get an outside table (I learned why, quickly). My friends joined us with their new puppy (this becomes relevant later). I was half-way through my Bloody Mary when our table collapsed, the tableware shattered on the ground, we were COVERED in Bloody Mary, drinks, and food, and everything fell on the pup. The waitress came out to clean up the mess and did NOT apologize once. The individuals at the table next to us explained that the same thing happened to them the previous week. The waitress brought the bill, credited the Bloody Mary (after I asked), and that was it. In other words, if you want good food and service, don't go here. (P.S. This was not my first time here.)

Snippy waitress who warmed up a bit and was fairly attentive. Shrimp, rice & beans were good. Crabcakes were dissappointing and lacked flavor. Imported crabmeat in May in Baltimore? Really???

5 stars for the food, 2 stars for the service. I'll first say that I would definitely come back here, because I really enjoyed the food, but the service definitely left a lot to be desired. We came here for brunch on Sunday and it was a big game day, so we expected crowds. While it was crowded downstairs, we were immediately seated upstairs. This place is more spacious than it seems, which is nice. The ambiance is very relaxed and chill. There was music playing, which was a bit loud for my liking at 10 in the morning, but it was okay. It took awhile for our server to greet us. We ordered the house coffee instead of a mug for the coffee bar. The coffee was pretty strong and hot. We placed our orders quickly since we had time to review the menu before. I ordered the Western omelet, my boyfriend ordered the Metropolitan omelet, and our friend ordered the hangover cure (eggs, sausage, bacon, toast). The food came out in a reasonable time. I loved my omelet! It was cooked perfectly, stuffed with ham and peppers, not too much cheese. I also loved that the toast comes with tiny jars of strawberry jam! I ate every bit of my breakfast. Everyone else cleaned their plates as well. So our server only came back once after we received our food. My boyfriend asked for more coffee and he seemed annoyed at this request! He didn't even bother to ask anyone else if they wanted more coffee, either. We didn't see him again, in fact we had to ask someone else for our bill. I'd come back to eat, but was not impressed with the service, and it seems other Yelpers have been similarly disappointed.

The diverse drinks options at this place is awesome, but when it comes to food my friends and I have different opinions. We all got didn't think the goat cheese appetizer was as awesome as it sounded on the menu, but when it came down to the entrees, I think I enjoyed my tuna dish more than they enjoyed what they've ordered. I would definitely give this place another chance!

Every single item I have had on the menu has 1) been demolished within a good 2.2 minutes of being presented to me and 2) been so doggone good, I seriously considered wandering back to the kitchen and shaking hands with the chef, but thought better of it as not to distract him from his other creations. All this, from a wine bar/coffee shop. It's not a fancy place. You don't go here to impress a first date with the price of the meal or the ambiance of the space. You go here with friends or for meetings or on dates with people you actually know and just want to spend some time with, not impress with fluff. I've had breakfast sandwiches here, recently a chipotle shrimp veggie wrap that was bananas, and of course, teas and pastries. The staff is always super nice and helpful and will let you sit upstairs with your laptop even when the upstairs is closed if you promise to run down and get your food from them at the counter or be patient until they can break away and come upstairs. There's usually only one or two people working during the day, so it's totally understandable and not a hassle at all. Plus, 9 times out of 10, they do find a way to get upstairs so you aren't neglected. Couple the great food with great wine and fantastic mimosas served in a pint glass and you have a great place to set up shop, have a bite, and get cracking on work for an afternoon or meet up with folks you haven't seen in awhile. Really... Metropolitan is pretty much perfect for most ocassions.

First the food: Went here yesterday for brunch and as I expected the food was pretty good. Just had the staples - breakfast sandwich, waffles and coffee but all very filling and satisfying. Second the service (hence only one star): Absolutely the worse I've ever experienced!!! The host/bartender was very curt and rude as soon as we walked in. She made it clear that they were too busy to seat us and rudely pointed us to the bar - where we sat for what seemed liked forever until she decided to take our order. I won't focus on that fact that she got my order wrong or never came back to check on us after the food arrived - that I would be willing to look past. What I can't look past was her blatent treatment differential when other customers came in after us. For them, she was cordial and prompt. For us, she was curt and rude and not attentive in the least. And before we could barely finish our food, the check was shoved in our face. And before we could barely put our cash on table, she hurried back to collect. I really do hate to play the race card, but when it is this obvious, it cannot go unaddressed. As two people of color dining in a nearly all white establishment, I've felt this type of treatment before, but never as obvious and mean-spirited as this place. This place will never get my money or my business again. If you are a person of color looking to dine here, be warned - you will not be treated the same as your fellow white diners. If that matters to you, I would encourage you never to step foot in this place or on the other hand perhaps a flood of non-white diners will help them see things differently. Etither way, it's probably not worth your time.

Went here for lunch on 6/3/14. Had a very nice server who let me pick which table I would like to be sat at. Started off with the Hummus Platter. DELICIOUS. My friend and I also ordered 2 salads: Greek with Blackened Chicken and Caesar with Grilled Chicken. Both were so big we were unable to finish. Everything was delicious and service was great! Will definitely be back again!

Metropolitan was my haven through four years of graduate school. Whether we needed a cool spot to study, a cozy space to gather or a reviving brunch after a night of celebrating milestones, Metro was always the neighborhood spot we could count on. Their good is good. The beer and wine list is extensive and has something for everyone. Highly recommend this place to anyone searching for a comfy neighborhood hang.

Came here for Sunday brunch - wait was longer than the promised 15 minutes, and one person's meal came out later than the rest, but the breakfast tacos were fantastic and the menu had a lot of variety. I would definitely go back again.

The service was quick but the waiter with the gray curly hair was very rude to us. He did not try at all to accommodate us and our taste. I was very disappointed in his attitude. The atmosphere and food were good but I would be hard pressed to come back because of him.

I love, love, love this restaurant. Even after moving from Federal Hill, I will drive an hour to eat here. The food is nothing short of amazing. My favorite dishes are the buffalo chicken quesadilla (sounds simple, but is amazing!), the blackened chicken and shrimp pasta, and the spicy beef salad. The beer list is extensive & perfectly thought out. The only qualm I have is the wait staff is somewhat abrupt, but that does not stop me from going.

We followed up our dinner here because "we want to stay out". Not being from Baltimore, we had no idea what this place was, but heard the music and saw the bar. Perfect! So...in we went. While I initially liked the look and feel of Metropolitan, I quickly started to feel uncomfortable. No, I'm not from Baltimore, but I shouldn't feel out of place. The people in the bar were not very friendly and looked almost annoyed when the 4 of us sat at a table next to them. The bartenders weren't all that attentive and almost annoyed when I had questions about certain beers. However, being a newbie craft beer lover, I was impressed with their selection and that the bartender offered samples to help me decide. I really don't want to give Metropolitan a bad review because I can tell it's probably a pretty cool place. But two stars is the highest I can go. If I'm ever in Baltimore, I'd want to give this place another try, but wouldn't go out of my way.

The Metro is my go-to breakfast spot in Fed Hill. Try the salmon eggs Benedict or any of their Benedict sandwiches. Amazing. If you are feeling cheap, grab a breakfast sandwich on a bagel. They are delicious. I also like that a lot of their options have chorizo sausage. I would highly recommend this place!

Probably the best brunch I've had in Federal Hill or really anywhere. Large portions for pretty cheap. The eggs are great, hash browns are phenomenal and the french toast is on point. Mimosas were a little too dry for my taste but other than that great. I've been for lunch and dinner too - extensive menu with lots of options. You really can't go wrong with anything here!!

This place is a groovy treat. I was meeting a new friend here and thought it was a coffee shop. Boy, was I off base. Yeah, they have a delectable variety of coffees here, but it is much, much more. I got a jamming veggie sandwich with perfect shoestring fries. They had a great beer selection, but regretfully, I couldn't partake due to being on the clock. I'll def be back.

I've been a somewhat "regular" at Metro for a few years now. The beer and wine selection isn't bad and the service is pretty good (depending on who serves you). I love the atmosphere, laid back and a good location as well as great music playing. The menu is really big (almost too big to the point that it's really difficult to choose what you want to eat) and has a lot of selections. I really like the salads and breakfasts. It's a great place to stop into on a nice, summer weekend and try to get a seat outside. I also recently ordered the Asparagus Penne and really enjoyed that however it may be a little better with some prosciutto added. (It IS on the vegetarian portion of the meal, though). I'd recommend stopping in for breakfast and if you like the breakfast, come back another time for lunch or dinner. There's rarely a wait, too, which is great.

Called the Metropolitan to see if they had a certain rarish cask beer. She said she didn't know, it was in the upstairs bar, could we call later. They did have it. My wife ordered a beer, and then a different beer, which they poured into the same dirty glass. I held my old glass back until I got my next beer. One barfly sits in a chair against the wall of the corner, blocking the way for anyone who wants to sit at the dogleg of the bar. Servers outnumbered guests, but service was still lousy. We chose not to have dinner here.

  • Daniel D.

I hate to give this Federal Hill hangout 1 star, but guess what... I will. My recent trip to Metropolitan was by far the worst dining experience I've had in a great while. I'll give you the short version. Our group of six walks in. No seating downstairs. It takes a minute for us to convince the server a six-top was worth putting upstairs. We were there to spend money on food, not sit and nurse one beer. Finally we are seated. Glasses of water arrive. My glass was dirty, but wait, the server brought seven glasses so I won't mention it, I'll just take the unused glass. All of us order drinks other than water. We order an appetizer for the table and each of us orders an entree. I order the chicken wrap. Entrees come. Well, five entrees come. Somehow my chick wrap didn't make it. Someone at the table made a joke about how they're still chasing the chicken. After dropping the food off, we didn't see our server again until it was time to grab the check, 45 minutes later. Not even to ask if we want any more drinks. Still waiting for my chicken wrap. By this time I wasn't the least bit interested in eating. We pay the bill, say our good byes and walk out the front door, all the while waiting for the waiter to say something about forgetting the chicken wrap. He never gave it a thought. You'd think six people, five plates... I'm missing something. Apparently not. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. I may give it another shot, doubt it.

HUGE DISCLAIMER: THIS PLACE IS LOCATED ON 902 SOUTH CHARLES STREET, NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH 902 NORTH CHARLES STREET. Sadly, we were not privy to this information one Friday evening as we walked all the way up to 902 North Charles Street only to find NO Metro Coffeehouse existed. And unfortunately, their website does not specify it is on SOUTH Charles St., so again, do keep this in mind before you have to totally alter your plans due to misinformation. That aside, we've had great experiences here. We came in for a drink Sat night and they really do have a great wine and beer selection. Wish we would have been able to eat here for dinner instead of roaming around on NORTH Charles St looking for it all night, but I digress. We returned the following morning for breakfast and ordered coffee and omlettes, which comes with fresh fruit and toast. Once you can find it, this would be a great Sunday morning breakfast spot with friends or a cool place to catch a drink before or after dinner.

Was originally introduced to the restaurant via Firkin Thursday. Been hooked ever since. It's a place you can bring your kids for breakfast/brunch, get a great beer, have excellent food and relax in one of the most laid back establishments in Federal Hill. Metro is the complete opposite of the majority of the Fed Hill bars that are noisy and full of annoying drunk college kids that come down for cheap booze and a big party. Usually full of regulars and it's one of those, where everyone knows your name type of joints. You'll usually find Bruce, the owner, hanging out with the beer lovers at the upstairs bar on Firkin Thursday. Add in that this is one of the few places in Fed Hill open on Monday and you've got a winner!

This is one of our favorite places to go in Federal Hill. It's got quite a few things going for it including its older hipster crowd and its slightly out-of-the-way locale (read not on cross street). And did I mention it's well thought-out beer menu? We've never experienced the packed weekends others have yelped about as we tend to go out early and during the week, but it isn't hard to see how such a small space could easily fill up. Having been here about half a dozen times over the last year or so I'll provide an "average" of our visits: Service Can be a tad on the slow side. You'd think they'd want to focus on turning tables more often in a space this "cozy". But if your company is as great as mine I actually enjoy the lingering. Beer Selection Always top-notch with a regularly rotating set of microbrew taps. Don't forget to check out their bottle selection as well. Always some surprises to be found. On my last visit I discovered Black Rye IPA from Colorado's own Tommyknocker Brewing. Fantastic. Food Fairly solid offerings with everything from truffled langustines to the Gunpowder bison burger (A Baltimore staple). Not blow-your-mind great but hot, filling and tasty. Price On the high-end for their peer group. Two people can easily expect to pay $70 on dinner and drinks. This place is one of our favorites and probably will be toward the top of our list for some time to come. It's relatively quiet, has good food, a great beer list and makes you feel grown up without feeling old. Avoid the 20-something bars on Cross St and wander down to The Met.

I lived in NC for 4 years. I know my fried chicken. And this place had fried chicken and mac & cheese as a dinner special one night. I think I had a mouthgasm. First, the atmosphere is great. It's comfortable to get a cuppa joe or a beer. It's nice during the week to sit for dinner though passing by on the weekends, it gets kinda crowded. Second, the food was AMAZING. Third, friendly but not overbearing service. I'll be back. It helps that it's right around the corner from my new house so I can get fat on their chicken.

Came here to catch up with a friend pretty late Friday night. The background music was great, and ambiance was casual and my favorite - they still had coffee brewing at 9:30 at night! My friend said it's a great brunch spot, and I'm sold on the casual crowd. Will try it again for a meal!

One of my favorite spots in Federal Hill. Very good dinner (try the blackened tuna option), excellent breakfast, good service and lots of great beers on tap. This is about as close to a "can't miss" as I've found in Federal Hill.

Yay! Finally there is a place in Federal Hill that offers some 'peace.' I am personally not a big fan of the bar scene in Fed Hill as places are usually super packed (with sometimes obnoxious people) with loudly blasted music. But upon coming to Metropolitan, it was pleasant. Small cafe on the ground floor and a dining area with a bar upstairs. My friend and I went upstairs to the bar for some drinks. We got cider, and I got a glass of rose. It was nice. I simply like that it wasn't too crowded, and they played nice music in the background (Spanish guitar was the choice of music when we went). Not too loud so people could have conversations. The bartenders were also attentive to our orders and such. Perhaps will go there again to try out their food menu.

I love Metropolitan. The food is good. The atmosphere cool. Location excellent. Great for breakfast, lunch, brunch or dinner. Great coffee too!

This is a great spot to come for brunch or just grab a drink. Typically eclectic crowd and music builds to the overall welcoming atmosphere. Favorite coffee - Oyster Reef Favorite entree - Metro Combo (eggs, sausage, potatoes, & french toast) Plus side - fast and courteous service.

This place had a good selection of different foods. The food was great, but the service was a little slow. I was here on a Wednesday night and I think there was only one person waiting tables.

I love this place because the bartenders are really creative and make some delicious cocktails. The food is pretty good too. First floor is really tight in space but you can also go upstairs if you are coming in as a big group. Just make sure you park in the good spot, parking in Federal Hill is really hard, and parking enforcement is always there giving out tickets.

Went for dinner this time. Pretty good, but pricey. On average $20 per entree. I stuck with the Cobb Salad for $12. Diggin' the beer selection. Monday nights are trivia nights! $3 select beer specials. It was super fun. My team won second place! Free bottle of wine as a prize. A Cab Merlot blend from Austrailia.

Been here a few times now for food and drink. The first time I ate here, I was with a few friends watching the election returns. I had the hummus platter as a meal. That's a lot of hummus for $9. It was very good, and very filling. I've also been here for breakfast/brunch. Awesome breakfast sandwiches. My friend had been raving about them to me and they did not disappoint. I ordered a breakfast sandwich on a croissant with egg, cheese, and chorizo sausage ($6.50). It was excellent. The croissant wasn't too buttery, but was just flaky enough. Very satisfying. The bfast potatoes ($2) are also pretty good. I liked that it was a good mix of sweet and regular potatoes. I liked that there was free refills on coffee. It's self-serve, but they weren't very good about refilling the pots when they were empty! There was an almond blend that I was hoping to try, but sadly it was out. Weather permitting, they will have tables set up outside and the windows were wide open. Very inviting. As Mike M. mentioned, Monday (ooh alliteration) nights are trivia nights! Sign up for Lindsay's (the trivia mistress') email list and you get clues about categories for the next week's trivia. No better way to waste time at work on a Monday than wikipedia-ing anything and everything about Dante's Inferno (as was the case last week). This last Monday I had the California tortilla wrap, which comes with salad on the side. The tortilla was not super thick, so it didn't make up over half the wrap as is sometimes the case when you order wraps, and there was lots of avocado inside, which I love =)

We went last weekend and had an ok experience. The guys are beer drinkers and the selection was good. My sister and I had sangria and that was also pretty good. My only complaint is the service. We didn't really have a server although there were servers around. We finally got our drinks order in after being there for 20 minutes. Again, the service is what brings my rating down.

Second time here. It was good but not as good as the 1st time. Quiet early Monday night. I had a nice carmenere and the meatloaf. The potatoes were luke warm but the rest of the meal was good. Meatloaf needed a bit more flavor but was good and I liked the brown gravy. The vegetables were done well. Overall a good meal. Above average, but could have been a bit better.

Ah, Metro...you who are always packed on the weekends. But I will say they make some tasty food. We always visit this place when we visit Baltimore, probably cause it's feet away from my brother-in-laws. Metropolitan is a good coffeehouse/restaurant. They've done a great job balancing it all, which is impressive. From micro-brews to wine to DAMN good bloody mary's to tasty coffee, they've got the drinks covered. Their food is also quite good, not amazing, but for a solid burger, steak, omelet, or breakfast burrito its good. I wanted to give this place four stars, but on our last visit my wife ordered a side of bacon with her breakfast and well, it was NOT good...greasy, half cooked, etc. She had a stomach ache for the next two days. Bad, Metro, Bad. All in all though, the bacon won't be enough to scare us away. Next time we're in B'more, we'll be back fighting for a seat to cure our hangovers on Sunday morning with the rest of Federal Hill, and it's definitely good for that....and worth a little wait.

  • Amanda C.

I'd like to give 3.5 stars. This is a solid place for brunch, but nothing amazing or knock your socks off. Funky space, bar with a cozy feel. I had a yummy pumpkin latte and the breakfast banana split with yogurt and granola. Good service, moderate portions, and inexpensive. A good, quick go-to.

The food here is pretty good, but the service gave me low self esteem. Maybe I am not worthy of food and drinks, which sucks because I need nourishment for my sexy body. If you are a do-it-yourselfer or a survivalist, you will enjoy this place.

  • Martha O.

I have been here a few times for breakfast, while the food has always been very good, the Crab Omelette this morning was exceptional. I hesitated due to the $12 price, but it was worth it! Huge pieces of crab in every bite. The spinach, cheese and tomato were in perfect proportion - let the crab take center stage. My friend got Steak and Eggs and all were done perfectly. I enjoy the self-serve coffee selection. Last time I was here the service was very slow due to a big party upstairs. Only 4 stars because of the slow service one time and the high price for breakfast. But still one of my favs!

Good, diverse menu. I've had a solid pasta, sandwich, and salad here. The hummus left room for improvement. Nice outdoor seating. Good beer selection. Overall a reliable and comfortable place.

If I could set up a cot somewhere in Metropolitan that would be wonderful. I stop in regularly on weekday mornings when I'm out of coffee or milk at home. There is really nothing better than coffee and a croissant when I have to drive to work. I also love to stop by Metro for a classier, laid-back drink. Great wine and beer selections. The only draw-back I've ever experienced at Metro was their trivia night. As an avid trivia fan, I could not stomach the girl that was reading the questions. I will forever avoid one of my favorite places when they are doing trivia.

  • Eric P.

I got o Metropolitan about once a week to get their breakfast fajitas. It won't blow your mind, but they are solid and decently priced. They have specialty coffee with unlimited refills, which is cool. I take Metropolitan's breakfast against any other in Fed Hill, maybe a tie with Little Havana. The atmosphere is really nice - not too snobby but not a dump either - cool section upstairs. The "children of the korn" artwork with drawings of kids is slightly disturbing - if you go upstairs you'll see what I'm talking about. Overall I like this place though and I'll continue to come back.

I have to update my previous review to mention the deliciously perfect item I ordered for brunch recently. If you're here for breakfast try the Damon's Breakfast Monte Cristo. The menu describes it as Canadian bacon, applewood bacon, scrambled eggs, Cheddar and Swiss on Texas French Toast with raspberry sauce and fruit. The description does it no justice. This is possibly the best thing I've eaten for breakfast/brunch EVER. The raspberry sauce that you dip the sandwich in is the perfect compliment to the dish.

I have been here a couple times at weird hours, once meeting people for breakfast, another time a few beers deep. Today I went because of good reviews on this site and I just moved to Fed Hill recently. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it's a total locals' place (that will still be very nice to you even if you're not a local). The bartender who served me, Sarah, was super friendly and made me some great beer recommendations. The food (I got jerk chicken) was awesome. I will definitely be back :)

I go to Metropolitan occasionally and really like several of the salads they serve on the dinner menu however my recent breakfast experience was disappointing. I went during a weekday, ordered the Belgian waffle, breakfast potatoes and bacon but every item was terrible. The waffle had a dense biscuit-like texture and was lukewarm though the waitress said they had made it to order, the potatoes were cold (the potatoes that came with my husband's omelet were warm so I guess they just didn't bother heating mine), and the bacon had an odd, stale flavor. Maybe it was uncured bacon, but something was just off about it. The service was also lacking. The waitress didn't come to check on whether we liked our dishes or needed drink refills and only discovered my dissatisfaction when she came to clean off the table. To her credit, she did remove the uneaten items from the bill. I'll probably return, but it won't be for breakfast.

Had a very good time here on my first night in Baltimore. Wish I'd gone back, didn't eat or drink nearly as well after. I arrived pretty late in the evening, but they didn't give me any hassle about being too late to order dinner (most other places had closed the kitchen or were closed entirely). Loved the beer selection, had a couple really excellent selections. Food arrived HOT and lovely. Nicely sized portions and well-chosen side dishes. Would definitely go again should I be in Baltimore in the future, thanks Metropolitan!

Best wraps ever! Staff was engaging and welcoming, even if we weren't locals. Can't get over the picketed green bean in my Bloody Mary. To sum it all up, couldn't have been better!

I love this place. When I first moved here from Detroit three years ago, this was one of the first restaurants my roommate and I tried out. It seemed so "big city" to us, an upscale, shabby-chic haven, a place where the young professionals flocked to relax and get a cup of coffee, a pint, or a meal. And while the newness of the city has worn off, our original opinion stands strong--this place is money. Space is a little tight inside (you have to trip over a few purses and grannies with iPhones to refill your coffee, but you get to listen in on their conversations), but other than that, it's great. The vibe works with the type of food they're serving up--Metropolitan isn't elegant by any stretch of the imagination, but unvarnished feel and casual service complements the menu. The classy-but-causal atmosphere is brought totally full circle by the simple, but well-prepared food--it's like you walk in, and they're serving food. No big deal. And the food is great--Sunday, I had a BLT with a fried egg, and a cup of chili. It's nothing spectacular--I could definitely make it at home--but when served up with the atmosphere, it's perfect. Like I said, I love this place. I'd be hard-pressed to find something wrong with it, aside from the fact that it is a little hard to navigate. And hey, you gotta work for your meal, right?

Nice place with a lad back atmosphere. Stopped by for drinks one night (would have had food, but the kitchen closed early) then stopped by the next night for drinks and dinner. I was impressed by the multiple vegetarian options. (a welcome change of pace in the land of seafood!) Tried the vegetarian chili but it was just ok. My vegetarian pasta dish was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. I think if I were to go back to this restaurant, I'd stick to drinks and maybe dessert...but it's still worth visiting if you're in the neighborhood.

I get their breakfast fajitas every time-and I go pretty much every other Sunday or Sat for breakfast. They're delicious and pretty on point every time. I will say though, I'm not a fan of the fresh salsa that comes with-I know i'm weird but I prefer the old salsa they used to serve which is like Chi Chi's lol. Service is excellent, I love being able to choose where we sit-I try to go upstairs so I can stare at those odd pictures on the wall-good conversation starter.

  • Kiana N.

Didn't get a chance to try to the food here because the waitress/ manager, Kelly Jo, kicked out our party of 6, because she claimed that we had a bad attitude even though we never even spoke a word to her - we were talking amongst ourselves... Regular table conversation about what we wanted to eat, drink, etc. And she walked over to our table and told us to leave because we had a bad attitude. We were floored. We couldn't even figure out what she was talking about.. Maybe something she over heard at our table? ... Maybe the way we looked? Perhaps she thought we wanted to order? I know, the thought of wanting to order food and drink at a restaurant, gasp! Needless to say, the service at this restaurant is atrocious. I hope they lose all their business, or at least Kelly Jo.. She sucks.

Always cozy, local go-to place, a good place to meet an old friend or for a date. I prefer the upstairs bar for the cozy factor, great posters. Used to have alternative music (the cure, etc) but on a recent night they played Sheryl Crowe's greatest hits which didn't fit so well. The food is okay, could be better, but the lady killer salad is wonderful as is the chili. the greek salad has those yucky olives that come from a jar. I like that you can come here in the afternoon, plug in your laptop and work for hours. They are very cool about that and very welcoming although service can be spotty.

Been here twice for drinks and once for dinner. Service seems to be hit or miss, but the food was great. Definitely has that neighborhood 'hole-in-the-wall' feel but a bit more upscale. I ordered the Ratatouille, which was a little unorthodox (never seen olives in a ratatouille), but still tasty. The menu seemed to have a lot of vegetarian and vegan friendly options, so Metro wins major brownie points in my book on that fact alone.

  • Upon recommendation from a native of Baltimore and self-proclaimed foodie, my two best girlfriends and I decided to check out Metropolitan Coffeehouse & Wine Bar for a late dinner tonight. I was quite pleased with our decision as we all found our food to be excellent. Arriving at the tail end of the dinner rush, the main-level, which appears to have a neighborhood pub atmosphere, was quite packed. We did find one open table, but we later learned there was another level upstairs. The restaurant/coffeehouse/wine bar offers a diverse menu from appetizers to entrees. We ordered the crab and spinach dip as an appetizer, and it was absolutely delicious. It was really creamy and went well with the pita bread. My pistachio encrusted salmon was perfectly grilled, and the accompanying vegetables completed a great meal. Overall, the prices are pretty normal for this area. You can certainly find more budget meals on the menu like the appetizers and salads, but the majority of the entrees fell into the $12-20 price range. Glasses of wine ran about $6-8 per glass. While the list of wines by the glass was limited, the menu listed more wines by the bottle as well as a nice selection of import and specialty beers. I would definitely eat at this restaurant in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood again, and I would certainly recommend it too.

Metropolitan is my go too for a breakfast Bloody Mary. The food is decent but it is the atmosphere and concept which makes it unique. At any time of the day I am either helping myself to the self serve coffee bar, or indulging in a mixed drink at the bar. Staff is always friendly, great brunch location all week long.

Love this place! Boyfriend got one of the sandwiches and found the fresh, colorful ingredients really exciting. Plus the bread was perfectly toasted and it came with a mound of skinny fries so formidable that I had to help me. For the veggies: great spinach salad featuring apple slides, big chunky walnuts, and roasted red pepper. I substituted our blue cheese for chevre--win! Get the basic balsamic vinaigrette with this one because the ingredients are so delicious you don't need a fancy dressing. Boyfriend tried to actual meat chili and I had the veggie. It came with a little plate of toppings (cheese, sour cream, red onions) that made it even more fun. The veggie chili was solid but it definitely needed a bit more of a kick, just an additional splash of hot sauce. Great mix of veggies and beans in there, too. Boyfriend liked the meaty chili a lot, too, especially because it was doing like a volcano leap out of his cup because it was piled up so high. For $3 for a small cup, the chili is a nice starter. Very excited by the array of beers on tap. Got the coffee and had a lot of fun filling up my own cup at the coffee bar. You have about five different choices and they're all roasted in the area. I think the brand is called Chesapeake Bay. Got a to-go cup and sipped my coffee for the rest of the morning. If you're looking for really solid food, a nice atmosphere (soundtrack: Bjork, Portishead, Four Tet, relaxing stuff), and friendly service, check it out. Next time I'm going to have the veggie sandwich. :)

You can find me at the Metropolitan almost every Monday night for their trivia night. I love it. What makes it so fun is the upbeat staff. Lindsey, who recites trivia questions while making you drinks, is sassy and keeps the room's energy, while Taejon her adorable counterpart runs around like a fiend serving the multiple tables. The only problem is that the food is a little lackluster for a weekly thing. Sometimes Doo will make a special which is great, but otherwise it is just the same old things. On other nights the place is hopping with Federal Hill yuppies. Normally, I would hate this, but seriously the staff and the regulars are so great that the place maintains its local hangout feel.

Great spot to catch a cappuccino on a blustery Sunday afternoon. Just be sure the Ravens are NOT playing at home or you will never find a place to park. Service was quick and friendly - even though our black-and-white quadraped couldn't join us inside. But standing outside with a puppy tucked into a jacket isn't all that bad .

For an area that seems loaded with twenty somethings, I do not understand why Baltimore does not embrace brunch. And dont tell me to go to Spoons, that place is for hacks. You got a breakfast burrito the size of a log, the belgian waffles are to die for, and its only 5 bucks for everyones favorite hangover cure- The Bloody Mary. Add in outdoor seating for the pups and I'm sold.

My friends and I love this place. The food is good and it's quiet enough, even on a Friday night, that you can sit and have a long, relaxing dinner without feeling like you're holding up the place. It's also pretty affordable, despite the high-quality food they put out. Tons of beer and wine selections don't hurt, either. The wait staff always puts up with my drunken group with a smile on their faces, even though we end up staying for a couple hours every time. The fried goat cheese app is really good. Secret tip: Upstairs, there are love notes tucked into the brick wall.

The tables here are so close together that you bump into the people next to you if you inhale too deeply. I guess you can call it cozy... I had the smoked salmon wrap, which was pretty good, albeit unexceptional. The side salad that it came with was pretty good, although i was jealous about the chips that other people got. Some of the people I came with had breakfast for lunch, which seemed like a good option. I already had eggs for breakfast, though. Sampled the hash browns, which were a little bland, but otherwise ok.

I recently went there with a friend, and we were very pleased that brunch is served until 2. I had the Mexican omelet, which was really great. The omelet itself was delicious, and the potatoes were very good. My friend had the monte cristo and really enjoyed it (the bite I had of it was great). The beer list is also pretty impressive. Overall, it was one of the best meals I've had in Fed Hill.

(11/13/2011) We were looking for an oasis in Fed Hill from the screaming Sunday football crowds and found Metropolitan. They had the Ravens game on, but were playing jazz over the speakers. Food is serviceable, not spectacular. There were a few quiet folks at the bar; they had some lattes, some porters. It's a cozy place for a nice coffee and a break from the usual bonehead crowds (we narrowly missed getting spit on walking down Charles Street by some jerseyed guys smoking on the sidewalk in front of Mad River). The highlight of the meal was the Scotch Egg (hard-boiled egg wrapped in a layer of peppery sausage, breaded, and deep-fried); something you don't see too often on menus. Chili was welcome for being warm, and it was cool day, but nothing special. Calamari was the usual breaded fare with a sweet mayo, light chile, honey flavored dipping sauce (mostly rings, only 2 legs). Goat Cheese and Carmelized Onion Pita pizza could've used a touch more time in the oven to crisp up and develop a little more Maillard goodness. Mussels were from a frozen batch, overdone, broth very garlicky. It's a welcoming space, def worth escaping to.

My friend and I came here on after watching fireworks at the harbor. We were looking for a place to get a drink and avoid the typical drunk new year's crowd. Surprisingly, there weren't too many people at this place. I don't think he was a bartender but the guy who took our order and brought us our drinks was very nice and very welcoming. He also brought us complimentary champagne! The prices are fair, they have a good selection of local brews on draft and some good imports. There are a lot of bottles as well. Other than that, I can't say much about the food since we didn't have any. If I lived in this area, I could definitely see myself as a regular at this bar.

If you are ever in Federal Hill, this restaurant is a MUST! I have been here countless times and have ALWAYS been beyond satisfied with my food. The only thing that is keeping me from giving this restaurant 5 stars it the service. The waiters are friendly but they can sometimes forget about you. Also the downstairs seating arrangement is very crowded. Otherwise it really couldn't get any better!

  • Abe L.

Had breakfast here on a saturday morning - they were busy, but the staff was efficient and the service was good. The food was super tasty, and prices were decent. Only thing I didn't like - you have to get your own coffee at the back of the restaurant. Walking through the crowded dining area with hot coffee is the waitresses job - not mine.

  • David W.

Great peanut chicken with bow tie pasta. They played good music and had a nice location. It was not filled with the former frat boy crowd, so it was a nice pleasant place to eat and hang out. They have a good beer and wine selection, including mead (honey wine), which you don't see everywhere. I'd go back, but since most of the entrees are $17-$20, I'd probably split one with someone else (I wasn't able to finish my pasta dish, it was a lot of food for one person) and also share an appetizer.

I stopped here for a quick lunch before heading to the American Visionary Art Museum. The atmosphere was cute and comfortable, and the wait staff was very friendly and helpful. My spinach salad was huge and delicious, loaded with poached pears and red onion, amongst other veggies. It was well priced too. It was a little confusing figuring out whether I was supposed to fill my own coffee or not though. Also, for someplace that calls itself a coffeehouse, the coffee could have been better.

I'm really into this place. Pasta, sandwiches, salad...try anything. Or everything. Brunch is tasty, too. I judge my brunch places on how well the breakfast sandwich is made, and this place knows how to make 'em. Try the bloody mary, as well. But make sure you have a designated driver after one.

My feelings about this place is a little mixed. The atmosphere is great. Very cozy with 80s music lightly playing in the background. They also have a couple of flat-screens around the bar downstairs. Definitely a good place to go out and catch up with your friends for some drinks ... as long as you don't mind that the people sitting next to you are REALLY close to you. They also have 4 tables set outside - but those were packed by the time we got there (Sunday was spring-like). They also have some bar-height tables around the windows, which do open up. Food-wise is where I get mixed reactions. The first time I went there was last year, around August, and we had breakfast. The food took a long time and the service slow. The second time was right after the fire this year. I stopped in there to say hi to some people. Their food looked and smelled AMAZING ... so I wanted to try it again - maybe they just had a bad day when I went the first time. I finally tried dinner this Sunday. We had bruschetta and hummus for appetizer. The hummus came in a bread bowl, which was a little weird, but the hummus itself was great (a little grainy but tasty). It came with some carrots, celery, tomato slices, cucumbers, and red onion slices on a lettuce bed. The bruschetta was also good. Here is a run-down of the entrees around the table: * lamb chops - a little disappointing - it didn't rest enough in the kitchen so one chop was blood red. By the time we got to the fourth one, that one was perfect. The sauce was a little too BBQ'ey for me and sweet. The grilled green beans on the side were fabulous. * Steak sandwich - fries looked great. The sandwich had cheese over it so I didn't try it. * Crabcakes - good size - little filler - tartar sauce had a funky green look to it and a taste that we couldn't quite figure out. Overall, not a bad dish. * Rockfish (fish of the day) - presentation was a little messy and the fish, which was done perfectly and had a wonderful color to it, was hidden underneath the spinach and vegetables ... aside from having to dig for the fish, it was an amazing dish. I will definitely go back there just to try it again. Drink-wise, we did not try any wine, although the wine menu looked pretty interesting. I did have one apple cider with dark rum ... the waitresses definitely have a heavy hand! Also, either shallots / red onions are in every dish or we just happened to order the six things with it. So - if you are not a fan, make sure to let them know.

I am from Philadelphia...and we have some amazing restaurants and wine bars...but I was visiting a friend who lives in Federal Hill and she decided to take me to Metro! I am not sue why this place is receiving not so good reviews. I really enjoyed it! The staff was really friendly, but not overbearing! The downstairs was a little crowded, so we went upstairs and sat at the bar. We ordered two apps and I got a small ladykiller salad (I think that was the name). We ordered stuffed mushrooms and the scallops for apps....they were both really good! My salad was amazing! I really enjoyed it! I would go back the next time I come to visit my friend!
