Boo...worst pizza ever! The dough was hard, the cheese greasy, the sauce bland, and the other ingredients stored being fresh a week ago. Yuck!

Changed there banana peppers to some generic brand. It's the only thing that made there subs different.

Coming from PA, I have grown to realize that south of the Mason-Dixon you can not find good pizza. Or, at least chances are you will find horrible to mediocre pizza. Keeping this in mind, I was not too thrilled when I I knew that moving near Waverly and out of Fed. Hill meant I would be leaving the close vicinity of Pub Dog and Mike's Pizza. Little did I know that I would be just as close to what I feel has to be the best non-yuppie, true Italian style pizza in Baltimore. I didn't expect a lot the first time I got pizza from Mama Lucia's. The fact it was on 33rd St and next door to an Asian nails place screamed ghetto and had me a bit fearful. I ordered a regular cheese pie and bruschetta bread because it looked tempting in the display behind glass. I got home and couldn't wait to eat because the smell in the car was making me so hungry. I ate the bread first and it was like a flavor explosion. I could tell the tomatoes were fresh and the garlic was not out of a shaker. The olive oil complemented the slice of melted mozzarella cheese perfectly. All those things combined with a very tasty maranera dipping sauce was taste perfection. I could not wait for the pizza. I opened the box and what I saw was a traditional north of the border pizzeria style pie. Thin, fresh dough, a semi-sweet sauce and gooey, but too excessive cheese. One bite confirmed this and I knew I had a new go-to place in the city. Since then I have tried different toppings and sides, but I keep coming back to the bruschetta and plain pie. Why mess with perfection? If you're in the area for some reason and the hunger pains are growing, stop in and order a pie. Don't be scared off by the thugs on the corner or the baby mommas arguing in the booths and not eating food, just know that this is Greenmount, that's expected and enjoy your pie. (or try take-out and avoid the whole mess)

Mamma Lucia's has the BEST turkey sub sandwich I have ever had. My boyfriend and I always debate on whether we'll go somewhere else for sandwiches and end up coming right back to Mamma Lucia's. Turkey sub with everything on it plus hots, made consistently every time and they are generous with the meat! If you haven't tried one, please do.

OMGEEEEEEE. I just had the best Chicken Cheese Steak Sub with provolone cheese. It had everything extra hots. I am sitting at my desk just as full as I want to be. I am so glad that I had no breakfast. This was truly a treat. The salt and pepper on it was even just right. I have loved this sub shop since my teenage years and they are still living up to my expectations and have never let me down. I sucked it down so fast I didn't even get to take a picture of it. I do apologize. No worries I will be sure to take a photo next time. Until then stop by and try it for yourself.

Mamma Lucia on 33rd is exactly what it looks like: good, cheap, greasy Italian take-out. Their pizza is one of my favorites in the area, and most of their subs are surprisingly good. The fries are the average takeout place fries, and they offer the usual fountain and bottled (some can) sodas. The main guy usually manning the register has been there for years, and is always great (especially to return customers). There's a small TV mounted near the ceiling that usually has news on, but they put on NFL football or soccer if there's a game going (often a game on a Spanish channel). The restaurant's location is in a fringe area between a college neighborhood (Hopkins) and the ghetto (Greenmount), and I'd guess 75% of the walk-ins are from the ghetto. I've never had a problem eating lunch here, but I probably wouldn't take my friends who've never been out of the 'burbs. Instead, get your food to go, and take it and sit in the park on 32nd and Abell.

UPDATE: I originally gave this place 4 stars.. but honestly? It really really really doesn't deserve that. One of those was a pity star. Corrected. Mamma Lucia is a take-out/self-service,eat-in-a-crappy-booth Italian restaurant that deserves 3 stars, it really does, but I just can't bear to do that. Why? They are up against so so much, and they're trying so bravely. They're located in a grimy storefront on the grimy corner of the grimy Greenmount Ave at 33rd street. The inside was somewhat less grimy, but not especially promising, but dammit! I wanted some eggplant parm and I wanted it NOW! While I waited, a gentleman approached me to ask if I knew anything about interest rates. I was confused, but he explained he had just bought a car, and because he didn't have any credit, he was paying 23% interest on it, and wanted to know if he was getting screwed. To be perfectly honest, I don't know very much about interest rates, but I think it answered his question when my jaw dropped. There were glass walls behind the counter so that you could watch them make your pizza or whatev, and they had food on display behind them. Oh my god, I hope it was just display, because they'd obviously been there all day and were looking a little.. dried out. Might be worth jumpin' on that first thing in the morning, but I'd be cautious ordering at 10pm. My food? Apparently served in family portions. For $7.59, I got a side salad, like a third of a loaf of garlic bread, and one of those round aluminum takeout containers literally full to the very top of spaghetti and eggplant. By the time I had eaten my fill, the food was just level with the top of the container. The eggplant was unbelievably tender and not too breaded. I kept unearthing random chunks o' cheese under the somewhat overcooked pasta. The pasta sauce itself was pretty bland tomato-y but really? What do you expect? One of the little details I found so captivating: the garlic bread was so well-done, with actual pieces of chopped garlic and fresh parsley. The side salad was pretty mundane, with iceberg lettuce, chopped pepperoncinis etc, but the oil & vinegar dressing they enclosed was also homemade, with pieces of dried rosemary in the oil. See? They have aspirations! Yes, I was well and truly touched, and this is why I gave them 4 stars. Also, they were really nice. For all their unpromising appearance, they may be limited by their location, but they're really trying. Good for takeout and I'd imagine their pizza is decent as well. I'll go back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
