Updating to reflect my current thoughts... The place has shot from 4 or 5 stars, to 1. The 1 is only because their soups are good. But as a restaurant establishment, the service is abysmal. If you aren't Hispanic or speak Spanish (like me), you shouldn't try to become a regular here. They won't give you much of their time or respect. The kitchen food is the one thing they can't control, so the quality is unchanged, but the last 2 times I went to see if they had become better to their patrons, and unfortunately, not a bit. I am very disappointed. Will not return and suggest to the owners and other potential customers to be cautious. The girls that serve are quite slow and unresponsive. That is unless, of course, you speak Spanish.

Finally!!!! I found a place in Baltimore with Mexican food that is as good as Southern California! The tacos were authentic and delicious! The owner is passionate about how he cooks his food and explained the process he uses in making his carne asada to my boyfriend and I. Excellent customer service and most importantly the best tacos in Baltimore! And at a reasonable price!

This was such a fantastic surprise! My husband and I stumbled upon it after passing up another little restaurant a couple doors down that we found to be overpriced. We had a delicious Pozole Blanco and the most complex, smoky red salsa . Wish I could have bought a jar of it. The owner was so friendly and he prepared a tender pork taco with habanero salsa that he served to us on the house! Would definitely return!

The menu here has changed in the past year but the food remains really solid. I'm not sure if there's a new owner or if they just decided to make some changes to what they serve but either way it's still a great place for a cheap, tasty meal. One thing that bummed me out was that I no longer saw mole on the menu. You used to be able to get great mole chicken here but that appears to be gone. This is also not a vegetarian friendly restaurant so don't come here with someone who's looking for something without meat.

What isn't to love about an assuming, family-owned authentic Mexican restaurant in Upper Fells? The menu offers a diverse array of Mexican dishes, including some amazing breakfeast options. The drinks are tasty and large, with a huge mug of horchata costing less than $4. Tacos are cheap and tasty and every meal comes with a complimentary bowl of nachos and salsa. We will be going back, and we will be going back often.

This is a great stop for locals and visitors to Baltimore alike. The tortillas are obviously hand-made; they're more flavorful than any tortilla I've eaten. And don't be afraid to try the rabbit - it's delicious. Think of it like a big, Mexican family reunion - large tables, traditional specialties, and food that may not be healthy but is always delicious. And judging from the foot traffic while we were there, El Taquito Mexicano is where the local Latinos eat (and that's always a good sign). You probably won't wander this direction if you're just staying on the waterfront - but you should. The Fells Point neighborhood has a lot of local flair and is less shiny and mass-produced (i.e., filled with chain restaurants) than the waterfront while being perfectly safe and fun. If for some reason El Taquito is closed, you can always wander down the street to Tortilleria Sinaloa, which is also delicious! (Tortilleria doesn't take credit cards, however, while El Taquito does.)

It's always rubbed me the wrong way when people say, "This [ethnic] restaurant must be good, because I see a lot of [ethnicity] people eating there!" The questionable logic notwithstanding (I've seen plenty of Americans flocking to horrible American restaurants -- maybe foreigners believe that Applebee's must be great) it seems a little weird to be analyzing the racial demographics of your fellow patrons, and drawing conclusions about the quality of the food based on that. And that brings me to El Taquito Mexicano, one of those places that, I've been led to believe, is validated by the perceived racial makeup of its clientele. I cannot confirm or dispute the claims about the people who eat there; on the recent Friday night I went, my gf and I were the only customers (so, for one night anyway, the diners were 100% mixed-race Asian/Caucasian/Sri Lankan/Jewish -- wonder what that says). What I can report is that the food -- which, call me crazy, is how I generally rate a restaurant -- was disappointing. The chips were stale, the salsa tasteless. The tacos? I've had better -- much better. The tortillas were decent but not enough to save the meal. In fairness, El Taquito Mexicano does have a rather impressive selection of traditional Mexican dishes on its menu, and perhaps it excels at some of those plates. On the other hand, we ordered very basic, straightforward meals, and they couldn't get those right. So, you can draw your own conclusions. Frankly, I'd instead recommend Tortilleria Sinaloa down the street for Mexican food. The food is better, and I've seen a lot of Mexican people there -- oh, never mind.

No frills decor, but friendly service and great food. We had Al Pastor tacos, but stealing a few glances at neighboring tables, we realized that we need to come back and dig a little deeper into a really promising menu.

This is our go-to dining place for quick, cheap but always so satisfying bite. We tried almost everything and they are all excellent. This is very authentic place with some seriously hot salsa. My favorite is spicy pork tacos or burritos. Marinated pork, al pastor, is very good as well. We also splurge ourselves with the fruity milk shakes. They are addicting! Staffs are very friendly and love the Mexican mom and pop appeal.

I have no idea why this place is so underrated on Yelp. I haven't eaten at El Taquito since high school, which was quite some time ago (not to age myself). However, I was recently reminded of this place and needed to give it the boost it deserves on Yelp. One word: TAMALES. Get some. Get them by the dozen. Get them by the dozens and freeze them. they are THAT good. I seriously, SERIOUSLY still think about the tamales from this place, and I live out here in CA where great tamales are made at mexican joints on every other street corner. I have really only found two tamales that can rival El Taquitos. They are THAT good. Trust me, just go. I don't know what the place is like now, but back in the day, it was a little hole in the wall joint. Stop being a snob about it and realize that the best mexican food is found in the seediest of mexican joints.

After eating at Tortilleria Sinaloa and trying this place, I would rate this place above Tortilleria Sinaloa. Not only is the food more flavorful, but they have plenty of table seating and they accept credit cards. As for the food, it was incredibly flavorful and well spiced. We had the tacos for dinner and the chicken al pastore, the chorizo, and the carne asada were incredibly tender and fully flavored. The chicken al pastore were my absolute favorite. They were mind blowingly savory and juicy. The tacos were stuffed to the brim and ordering the guacamole sauce was almost not necessary, but not to be regretted either. The meal also came with some radish, grilled pepper, and fried spring onion accoutrements. These were great little palate cleansers from the meat and even better vessels for the leftover bits of guacamole. While we were waiting, he offered their complimentary drink, a fermented juice made from pineapple skin that was much less sweet than real pineapple juice. It was incredibly refreshing and a great contrast to some of their spicier foods during our meal. Overall, a cozy and great little hole in the wall! You can tell the owner takes pride in the food and he wants you to savor all the flavors in his food. If we had questions about the food, he was more than happy to explain the types of seasoning. Between 6 tacos, 2 drinks, and an appetizer of thick tortilla chips, our meal was only $20 and overall awesome!!!

2.50 for a taco that has enough meat for two, what can go wrong? mediocre english, but enough to take your order. ordering takes 3 min, cooking takes 10. if youre in a rush. expect to wait a while for your food. lucky for me, this was always my last stop before heading home. good enough food for me to go back there again, even though i had to wait as long as it takes to kill/cut/marinate/portion/cook the al pastor tacos.

I completely agree with Pascal. I haven't been to any of the other Mexican places on Eastern Avenue, mostly because this one is so good! The food is excellent, well-seasoned (and occasionally spicy, which a lot of Mexican places that cater to gringos aren't), and dirt cheap. The salsa verde was particularly good, and I love the chile relleno. The avocado sauce is just that - if you're expecting Tex-Mex guacamole, you will be disappointed, but it's still tasty. Plus, the service is solid, and the staff speak good English, so if you have any questions or requests, you needn't worry. And if you want to brush up on your Spanish, you can always watch the TV Azteca on in the background.

The food? ¡Qué rico! (Those tortas... that bread... all the avocado!) The drinks? ¡Qué delicioso! (THE SIZE! The flavors! Dat cinnamon, doe...) But the service? ¡Qué horror! It took an inordinate amount of time just to get seated and menus, then a shorter amount of forever to get our drinks, and a slightly longish bit of eternity to get our food. And don't get me started on the bill. We tried to split the bill at the end, but the lady "helping" us gave us the world's loudest sigh, and didn't come back with our cards for a good ten minutes after we handed them to her... only to tell us she was having a hard time trying to figure out how to divide the tab. (Um... evenly?) It was also the first time I had ever had a waitress/server straight up tell us she didn't like a bunch of things on the menu. Okay?! Thanks for telling me that what I want to order is "eugh, I don't like [x, y, or z]." That being said, I'd certainly come here again for their amazing dishes, whether my waitress liked them or not. Even the complimentary chips and salsas are incredible. That green salsa is definitely for scoville-heads. Even the guacamole has a bit of a kick to it. All spells yum and yes, please in my book! I ordered the torta with spicy pork and it did not let me down (unlike the service). The veggies were on point, and the meat was tender and flavorful. The only thing I didn't dig 100% was that stringy cheese. I could do without it. I can't complain, though. The portions are HUGE, and I enjoyed my torta yet again the next day. MmmMMmm. Speaking of huge portions: the drinks... frothy, fruity, and with just a hint o' cinnamon. It's like a Mexican milkshake on steroids. The cup looks like a mini pitcher, yet I'm sure you'll surprise yourself as we did by finishing it all, despite the gargantuan size. All in all, a great little joint. But I'll be crossing my fingers for some better customer service next time. Then, this place would be absolutamente perfecto.

I got take out from here over Labor Day weekend. The only thing good I have to say is that the owners were nice. However, the chicken was rubbery, the food was bland and I was sick for the next two days straight. So much so that I had to take off from work. I'd recommend NOT eating here.

    (1)
  • Paul P.

Let me start by prefacing that the waitress was nice, and the starting chips/salsa were good. However, at the end of the day, I am not one to care much about service aside from water refills and getting the correct order in/out (do you really like being asked how the food is, when the food is still in your mouth?). The place was pretty deserted around 7:00pm; the only people in the restaurant were me, my friend, the cook, the waitress, and her two kids. The burrito that came out was not very good. The al pastor was very sweet (it should be more salty/spicy than anything else). The whole thing was mushy, even though it was a "dry" burrito. I didn't finish my burrito. I tried my friend's tacos that he ordered, and they were okay! Definitely not worth $2.50-$3.00 a pop, but a taco's a taco's a taco. I hail from 4 years in San Diego and take pride in tasty Mexican food. San Diego Mexican food at the taco shops isn't necessarily authentic, but it tastes a heck of a lot better than what I was given here. Even though I'm from Chicago, I'll eat Chicago style pizza outside of Chicago and wish it were as good as my hometown, but it's not heartwrenching. I'll eat New York style pizza outside of New York and wish I could have the real deal, but it doesn't kill me. Something about eating the Mexican food here and being underwhelmed by it did indeed manage to throw a nail in my heart. I guess to save myself the heartbreak, I should avoid tasting Asian food while I'm in Baltimore until I get some real confirmation on the quality. The street that El Taquito Mexicano is on has a bunch other Mexican restaurants that I will be stopping by at. Expect me

The place was quiet on a late Thursday night but the clientele was all Latin American which I consider to be a good sign. I ordered carne asada, carnitas and two fish tacos. The fish tacos weren't on the menu but they were kind enough to make them for me. After about ten minutes my food came and I was pretty impressed. soft corn tortillas with plenty of meat and fresh toppings and salsas. The fish tacos feature grilled fish and a slice of avocado and were very tasty. They also threw in a few pieces of grilled nopales which you don't see very often and was a very nice touch. The torta is huge! so be prepare to share that with a friend. i wasn't able to finish mine alone. The combination plates are about $12, but is huge plate. I recommend it to anyone who loves thin, sliced steak. Plus they are friendly & service has always been great.

The food?

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
