If you like Thai food, Chokchai is worth trying. Granted, I live very close, so if you have a place you like near you, a trip to Hamilton may be superfluous... Not many tables anyway. I got the drunken noodles with chicken, the Tom Yum soup and spring rolls. The noodles and the soup were ample in size and contained a good amount of chili heat. I encourage all to ignore the ridiculous reviews that have been written about this restaurant. Complaining that the green curry containing carrots is a misrepresentation of Thai food is not a valid point when the menu clearly lists carrots as an ingredient. Save your Thai outings for Thailand if you're that much of a purest. The menu also lists the amount of chili added to the food, about a teaspoon. If you want to sweat, ask them for more chilis. "The food tasted like the container" ... Really? An undeserved cheap shot for a pretty good place. I sometimes think that restaurants should be able to sue for libel with some of the stuff people post...Sheesh!

This is the first Thai food that ever crossed my lips, back in the old neighborhood in Baltimore, and it sure leaves a lasting impression. Of Yum! Super-delicious, really addictive green and red curries and perfectly smoky/sweet thai iced teas. I sort of miss the old neighborhood, the gunshots, the thugs, stopping by mom's house and getting carry-out, ahh, the good old days.

This is not the place to go for a nice sit down dinner, but if you have a Thai craving to satisfy, Chokchai will do the job. Being consistently disappointed by the overpriced Thai restaurants around Baltimore city, I was looking forward to trying Chokchai. After looking at the website, I decided I would pick some things up for dinner. I ended up ordering drunken noodles w/beef, pad Thai w/shrimp, and Panang curry. While I can't say that the dishes were the best I've had, it was definitely a solid Thai meal. And although some of the dishes were lacking a little flavor, it made up for it in extra meat. I don't know what the area is like during the day, but if you go at night, I would use the buddy system. In all, I would go to Chokchai for a quick lunch or a take home dinner. Enjoy! Note: $20 minimum on credit cards.

Hidden gem with authentic food. Employees are pleasant, prices are readonable, and Mrs Green is a wonderful cook. Mangos with sweet rice are a great desert!

Like the woon sen and tom kha gai soups, spicy shrimp if you like pain. Green and yellow curries are a sure bet. Wide selection, including fish options. Family business. Husband is no nonsense, wife is just about he sweetest woman you'll meet. I grew up going to their old store and they had a son who was my age. Haven't been to the new shop yet, which was formerly a gypsy house. Gotta love Harford Rd!

This quaint little Thai Carry-Out is one of the best I've eaten form in the area. I just had the Chicken PadThai and it was delicious. I am not too sure of how authentic the dish was as far as flavor goes but it sure lite my taste buds. it was prepared well and I didn't have to do anything to alter the flavor. I simply took my first bite and kept going from there! The service staff was very friendly and attentive. I will definitely be eating from here again. I'm going to try and take advantage of the inexpensive Lunch Specials they have available until 3pm. Signed: ~Returning Customer!

I am so on the fence about this place. The wait for the food was long and....quite. But the place was exceptionally clean. There is an adorable older woman in the back cooking. I was surprised to hear the microwave goin. So I got the information and menu about this restaurant online...prices and all. I made the mistake of assuming the prices were correct. After my long wait she gave me the price which was $2 over the cash I had. She said they haven't changed the online prices they put up years ago. So guess what she did.....lol. she took out the spring rolls I ordered. Lol.wow. OK. The food was extremely spicy. The servings were mediocre. I dunno, it was nice to try out a new spot for us, but I doubt I'll return.

Just bought a chicken panang curry. Undercooked chicken and just watery curry. Doest taste like panang at all. I have been to most thai in baltimore and this is the worst. Dont waste your money.

I wouldn't recommend eating there since it is kind of depressingly plain. But the food is anything but plain. I always do carryout. They use fresh spices, fresh basil, chilies, lemongrass. I find it hard to order anything aside from my favorite items: drunken noodles with beef, coconut soup, panang curry, sticky rice with mango. The pad thai is only so-so.

Absolute favorite place to get Thai in the city or the 'burbs. It's inexpensive, the spicy dishes are really spicy, and the ingredients are actually fresh (you will not find a frozen vegetable here). Everything I've had there is to die for delicious and, despite moving out of the city, I keep coming back for more Chokchai.

Excellent food, best enjoyed in carry out. The restaurant is a quintessential dive. Service is efficient and unsmiling. Someone else aptly described it as the Thai Soup Nazi. The neighborhood is relatively safe and we've always found free street parking on the block, but its sketchy enough to raise the pulse rate of those who don't regularly venture to Baltimore city. After dark if definitely feels like an adventure. Food quality is excellent, but portions are small so it feels overpriced. Hard to share dishes among our family of 3 because there is barely two decent servings of an entree in a container. Also they serve in clamshell boxes which allows spillage pretty easy and we usually have lots of liquid sloshing around the bag when we take everything out. Keep coming back for the good food, followed by a hiatus until we forget about the downsides. Definitely try it if you are nearby, but think twice about your other options before making a long trek.

This is my favorite place to eat. I have been going to them (husband and wife) for 6 years. I used to be able to walk to them and ate there frequently so I have had everything on the menu and it is GOOD. I would say I eat here about once a month....great service and food if you are in Baltimore, MD eat here.

I mean, you're in North Baltimore, so it's all relative. This is fine. I always order pad see euw with shrimp instead of chicken and it's tasty. They have been very accommodating with substitutions.

This is very good Thai food. Very consistent. I usually get the drunken noodles with beef, which is delicious. The dining area is rather small; there are only a few tables. We've only done carry-out, so I cant comment on anything more than that. Go for the food, that alone makes this place 5 stars.

Great place. I'm new-er to Thai food, so I can't provide the type of review that others on here can. However, can I say amazing??? My favorite is the pad-se-ew with shrimp. My husband loves the curries (I do too) and my friends love the pad thai. You can't go wrong (we haven't yet).

Best Thai food I've ever had; granted, I haven't been to Thailand. They've got a great variety of dishes, including appetizers, soups, curries, noodles, rice, and desserts. Most all of the dishes can be made with vegetables, tofu, chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp for varying prices. All the dishes are drowning with flavor. Go with a friend or two and get a variety and share them with each other for the best experience. My favorite menu items include the sweet and sour, yellow curry, chicken satay, tom yum soup, and mango sticky rice.

My go to curry spot! Like someone else said, it seems setup for carry-out more than dining. I love the green curry! Prices are reasonable, worth it!

First time ordering from this place. Most likely the last. I purchased the Drunken noodle. Paid $13 for chicken and pork. Man was I disappointed when I got home. It was a lunch portion with white rice... Rice with Noodles?! Barely any pork was included, not 3 dollars worth. I think there was 2 tiny pieces of pork. For the portion this is one of the MOST expensive Thai I have ever had.

  • Ebony H.

I would have given the food a 5 star if I had more of it in my order. I ordered the dinner portion and would not want to see how small the lunch portion is in size. I am guessing that the lunch and dinner portions are the same with the difference of lunch having a spring roll or soup and dinner having white rice as a side. I thought the flavor and overall taste of the chicken pad thai was great. I am not sure that I would go back being that it's almost 2 dollars more than what I can get a Pei Wei with Pei Wei giving more portions. I didn't go in being that my husband picked up the food but he says it was clean and the people working were friendly.

I'm always on a search for good Thai food and this place was just meh for me. Pretty flavorless pad Thai and was served with rice.

Came here on the recommendation of my Thai housemate, who loves this place. I, however, am unimpressed. As others have mentioned, portions are small. That includes the Thai tea. Tea came in 16 oz (?) cups which were totally filled with ice, such that I finished drinking mine by the time I had driven several blocks, even without slurping it down quickly. Tea was good, but definitely sweet. I have no idea what the housemate ordered us last time, other than that it was some sort of noodle dish. To my recollection, there wasn't anything particularly great about the flavor, but it was greasy. Green curry this time was incredibly bland. It didn't seem to have been salted at all. Husband (Thai) said that it was milkier than it should have been. The vegetables in it were soggy, especially the eggplant. I'm fairly certain that I could have made a better attempt at this dish despite never having cooked Thai food in my life. Even the plain white rice that came with was meh; the mushy texture was not only unappetizing, but made it difficult to soak up the curry. Moisture levels were also inconsistent throughout, as if it had been sprinkled with water and microwaved. Mango sticky rice came with the smallest mango I've ever seen. Nor was it terribly juicy or fresh, as if it had been cut earlier or simply been kept past its prime. The rice seemed like it had sat around for a while as well. The only redeeming quality was that the rice was cooked in enough coconut milk sauce to be tasty and not need any extra. Twice is more than enough for me here.

It was bitterly cold, I was feeling like a homebody, and I didn't want to eat the typical home-cooked meal. So I tried this Thai place! We ordered the Pad See Ew and Pad Thai (plus 2 Thai iced teas) on GrubHub, totaling $22. That's a pretty fantastic price for Thai if you ask me! The true test was the flavour and quality. Which were actually really decent! The teas were on the sweet side, but I'm 110% ok with that. Both pads were consistent and tasty. For a little corner restaturant in my hood, and for only $22, I'd say this place is a keeper for those stay-at-home weekenders.

The best place for thai take-out in Baltimore. The food is reasonably priced and delicious. My favorites are the pad thai and the masaman curry. I'm never afraid to try something new because they're dishes never disappoint. They recently lowered their credit card minimum to $10 so you don't need to worry about having cash.

They do a great brown fried rice (using a chili paste). Did not get anything else. But just based on the the fried rice, I can say with no doubts in my mind that this place is LEGIT. I will try to come back here again to try more of their Thai food.

I didn't care for my takeout. There was no one else there on at a time where I expected at least a few others to be picking up early dinner. My food was microwaved fresh for me. I know the sound and the texture you get from microwaving and this was it. I even heard the beep off. Maybe it would have been good fresh?

Delicious drunken noodles! My only complaint -- and it's a serious one -- is portion size. I have never seen an order of drunken noodles stretched out by rice. Could you just give us more noodles? The vegetables were delicious and crispy, cooked perfectly. The shrimp curry again was very flavorful but it was a conspicuously small portion. The restaurant offers to offer more protein for an additional $4. As flavorful as it was, I may try another Thai place for take-out next time. Great food, not a good value.

I love the food from Chok Chai. I always get the Penang curry but I've also had the pad Thai, chicken satay, fried tofu, curry puffs. The portions are generous and their cooks know what they're doing. It's more of a carry out restaurant than anything else but there are a few tables if you want to eat there. Highly recommended.

We have been coming to Chokchai since it was near Northern Parkway. It was a hole-in-the-wall back then but has gotten better in the new location. The food was terrific then and is still sublime. Our favorites are the spring rolls, chicken satay, pad thai and beef lardna. They are all done so well! We love that it's BYOB and have had many fun meal while tilting a glass of our favorite beverage. The restaurant is definitely short on atmosphere. In the winter and early spring, the place is incredibly cold since the heat is not turned on as high as it should be and since there is no breezeway. Management, turn on the freaking heat! Come on! Keep your clients warm! Also, just a gentle pointer, but it might be a good idea to greet customers with a smile so that they think that you're glad to see them. Doing these two things, along with sprucing up the aesthetics of the space with tea light candles, would probably do wonders for business. Every time we've been there, it has been a ghost town, and we would love for this little gem to continue succeeding.

Did not live up to its Yelp average rating. Steamed dumplings were petty good although the filling was a touch dry. The Tom Yum soup was really lackluster. Raw carrots, slightly dry chicken, frozen peas and corn. The basil chicken had good flavor, but more nearly raw carrots and frozen peas. Green pepper also slightly undercooked. Ambiance lacking. No A/C, and the sole bathroom was out of order. I'll keep looking.

Someone from thai cleaning service recommended this restaurant to me when i asked them for a good thai restaurant. I am glad they did. Very clean, the food was great, and the owners were very pleasant. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes thai food.

Delicious, but definitely a carry-out environment. I recently called in an order to Chokchai and decided to dive in by ordering my old standby favorites. We picked up shrimp and chicken spring rolls, shrimp pad thai, shrimp drunken noodles, Panang Curry Chicken and coconut chicken soup. Inside there were several tables, but all appeared to be filled by friends or family members, no one eating a meal there. About 16 eyes stared back at me as I entered and accidentally allowed the heavy screen door to slam behind me. I walked up to the counter and requested to pickup and the woman behind the counter began gathering my dishes together. A sign above the cash register requests you to please sit while waiting, so I moved to the love seat at the side of the room behind a small divider. A table was cluttered with magazines about Thailand and commercial kitchen products. It was a strange environment to wait in, but the food was ready within a few minutes and home I went. I'm happy to report that the food was good overall. The curry chicken and the drunken noodles were perfect. In fact, they were so good that I couldn't decide which of the two I preferred, so I just started dumping the curry chicken on my drunken noodles and going to town. Everything was surprisingly spicy and well flavored and I really enjoyed it. The drunken noodles weren't too oily and neither were the spring rolls. Crispy and flaky, one was plenty filling. My husband reported that the pad thai was not as tasty as my drunken noodles, but he proceeded to polish off the coconut chicken soup before I could even try it. Although Chokchai isn't good enough to unseat my favorite local Thai restaurant, I will definitely go there again...for carryout only.

This is my absolute favorite place to eat... ANYWHERE. If I ever crave anything, it's Chokchai yellow curry chicken & pad Thai... And Tom ka ghai (sp?) I've been eating here for about 15 years, and now drive 30 minutes to get my "fix", since I moved to Harford County. I have been to Thailand, and can say this is definitely authentic. Even in Thailand, you will get varying tastes from place to place, and in my opinion - I judge EVERY Thai place I go against THIS place and haven't found one across the US that comes close. I'm loving a previous poster's "Soup Nazi" reference, as this is how I've always referred to the old man. He loves me, though & brightens up every time I walk in & says "How many kids you have now?!" In that gruff voice of his. I've been begging him to move to Harford County for years now, and he's never kicked me out! He did refuse to serve my mother after she called to change her order three times, though! HA! I love, love, LOVE this place, and would eat here at LEAST weekly if it were closer!

It's a good place to sample Thai food. I've never had a bad meal there. I particularly like the basil curry with beef, sweet Thai iced tea, and of course, pad thai, but let's face it, if a Thai restaurant can't do a decent pad thai, then steer clear... One thing about Chokchai is the old man's consistency with ingredients. In fact I think he measures out the rice by the grain! Oh and shrimp? Expect 5 shrimp-no more no less. It's comical to point of head slapping. Expect sparse decor, and a warm dining area in the summer...hey-pretend you're in Thailand!

I get carry out here about once a week. It is my absolute favorite Thai place in Baltimore, other than Thai Yum. I could eat here everyday if funds allowed. I normally get Tofu Pad Thai while my boyfriend has tried pretty much everything and never disappointed.

Chokchai offers plenty of choices for vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians and meat eaters. The dining area is small (4 tables), but cozy and adorned with Tibetan and Buddhist symbols, pictures and decorations. The food is deliciously spiced, fresh and wonderful. I have no complaints about the service either - prompt and sweet. I eat at Chokchai fairly often and feel quite lucky to have this restaurant in my neighborhood.

First time ever having Thai Food. My wife suggested this place because she had been eating there for a very long time before she met me. She suggested that I get the chicken Pad Thai. I'm a slightly picky eater, or at least used to be, and when the dish came, it was not the type of food I was used to. But one bite and the fork was not efficient enough for me to get the food in my face fast enough. The Pad Thai was DELICIOUS! The service was great! It is totally a "small hole in the wall restaurant in the city of baltimore" style place and seems to cater more to carry out than eat in, but I was comfortable eating there and I'm sometimes a bit twitchy about these sort of things. Give it a try if you're in the mood for Thai!

unfortunately the food often tastes like the containers it comes in. The food itself is decent...but only just so. I've eaten here several times...hoping I had an off night, but it seems ok is all I'll get. Fortunately I've found a new place that is only about 8 minutes further north. Sorry Chokchai - I wanted to love you - being so close and cheap and all.

I tried Chokchai about 2 years ago excited that Hamilton had our own Thai joint. I ordered the Thai iced tea, Thai wings and Pad Thai. The tea was delicious but the food was not very good. It seems others have had a good experience here so I will return and revise my review based on that experience.

No joke...this place has some of the most kick-ass Thai food in Baltimore. These guys make Thai food like they just got off the boat. For Realz!!! Usually I am tough about the dining atmosphere and drink situation, but Hey I can loosen up for really good food. This place is a shack, it probably closer to a carryout. But don't let the decor of this place fool you: it da bomb.... I been to Chokchai several times in the past 6 years and it never disappoints. Whatever dish you order verges on greatness in terms of flavors and thai-style. The old man (and owner) who takes your order is gruff, much like Seinfeld's Soup Nazi. I once suggested moving his place to Canton, and he scowled at me and told me to get out of his place (it just adds to the charm of the place). So I have concluded that Chokchai is not cooking for hipsters, Baltimoreans, or Americans. It's cooking like it's on a hot, humid, bustling street in a rough part of Bankok. Im pretty sure the old man behind the counter is carrying a switch blade in case you try to pull anything on him. I;m not going to make any dish suggestins because everydish on the menu is good or great. BTW this place would get another star if the dining room was half decent and it served at least beer and wine.

Love their PadThai. Portions are smallish and the rice noodle dish is served with a side of rice. I'd recommend losing the rice and making the order bigger. Best for carry out.

The fact that this place only has four and five star reviews BLOWS MY MIND. Boy was super pumped to order from "the best Thai place around, no joke" (that would be a direct quote), and I naturally followed his excitement. Who doesn't love "the best" Thai? Lies. The bland crap they pass as food doesn't even come close to what Thai food should taste like. My "special" duck garlic was served 6 dried pieces of...something...cardboard? Perhaps that's the special part. There were some noodles involved. It merited a few bites before throwing it in the back of the fridge, never to be touched again. Boy seemed to like it. Poor thing. He lives in the area and knows no better options.

Delicious and inexpensive Thai food. A corner restaurant with 4 tables and a carryout style set up - not much to look at but looks can be deceptive. Most of the traffic was carryout. Service is friendly and attentive. This time around, we started with the piping hot spring rolls and Thai iced tea. We were in the mood for noodles so a huge plate of Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles. Both were delicious, hot, fresh and complex. Eventhough we were stuffed we had to finish it off with the mango and sticky rice, which was perfect. They do Thai right here and don't oversweeten the coconut flavored dishes and get the heat right since many places either don't add enough heat or add too much. I like it for lunch or dinner. The owners are terrific and friendly.

  • Ashley T.

Given the other super positive reviews, clearly I'll have to give this place another shot, but my first impression was blah. The pad thai was OK, with tender shrimp and fresh bean sprouts, but the flavors didn't pop. I was immediately turned off by the beef w/basil when I saw peas and corn floating in the bottom. The dish was extremely bland to my taste. For a quick fix, Chokchai will work, but for quality Thai food in Baltimore, I would recommend other destinations.

The first Thai food I had (too!) I read a City Paper review from years ago citypaper.com/eat/review… & it is still right on. However, I didnt like the crab cakes! (I usually have to try them wherever I go) Super cheap. Nice people and fast service. You can eat there, but there only like 3 tables. Tom Yum Soup is what I need when I dont feel good. Also love the stir fries and curries. You can park right out front if you are lucky. **************I have eaten lots of Thai since my first visit years ago. Sorry to say, this place isn't very good after all. It's very greasy. I wish it were better, as it is close to my home.
