Charm City was a Major BUMMER. We bought a cake from them years before they became famous on "Ace of Cakes." It was expensive even then, and tasted okay, but the people were so wonderful that we couldn't wait to revisit them. Duff is no longer based in Maryland, and he and his traditional main crew are sorely missed. We made an appointment, and we were charged a $100 deposit just to visit them. The staff was snobby, rude, and fussed with us when we asked if we could look at the myriad cakes on display in the showroom "up close." When we wanted to taste the 6 cake samples we chose weeks before the visit as instructed (from a listing of at least 25 or 30 flavors) we were not allowed to do so there. When we left and finally got to try the samples, they were frozen, dried-out, and tasteless. We decided that "yummy trumped perfectly artistic," and we went elsewhere for our cake, even though it meant losing the $100 deposit.

Cake (5/5 NOMs). It was great to meet the charm people during Borrowed event. We just got charmed away by very nomnom cake. Just love the light soft sweet flavor. It was so good that we just have to stop by and try more cakes. MORE CAKES!!!! I think Nomster can eat all of that cake hehe

HORRIBLE customer service. We sent them an e-mail regarding having a cake made for a 1 year old's cake smash. We really had our heart set on using this bakery because of all the wonderful reviews. It took them a full week to return our e-mail (& only did so after we called & said no one had responded to us) requesting a quote - $650 for a single tier, 8' child's cake smash photo with a few fondant animals. They took such a long time to get back to us, that other bakeries told us they wouldn't have time to make the cake. Incredibly rude & dismissive staff. I cannot believe they are still in business.

First off, a special thank you to the hubs for getting me a "Cake for 2" as an anniversary present! Cake is always the way to win over a gals heart! Our cake was wonderfully decorated, to the point where I had a really hard time cutting into it. I felt sad to ruin such an artistic masterpiece. The cake, peanut butter cup flavored, was absolutely delicious though! I'm not sure how some are saying that it was dry and bland, but ours was very flavorful and moist. Maybe it just depends on the flavor and complexity of the cake? Even the fondant tasted good (we weren't sure at first if we could eat that). As a big fan of the show too, I was thrilled to be able to get a cake from them and they did not disappoint at all! I just need to come up with more special occasions that will warrant a cake from them again.

I had a cake for two from here yesterday for my husband's welcome home from Afghanistan, and it was good! The cake was very nicely designed, everyone that saw it was like 'Wow! That's edible?!'. We had the brownie flavor and it was pretty moist and very rich. I couldn't eat more than a few bites and then I was full. The fondant was pretty yummy too, which is rare for fondant. The place was easy to work with and nice as well.

Years ago, I was at a party with the Geppi Museum downtown. They had 3-4 cakes for the guests made by Charm City Cakes! I had heard of these people through word of mouth, so I was really excited to have some of the cake. They looked amazing. Each cake was a recreation of a specific comic book cover. There was also a cake in the shape of Camden Station, the building the museum is in. I was really excited to eat said cake... And then I took a bite out of one. Dry, stale tasting, and overall just offensive to my tastebuds. I do not understand the hype behind this cake company. Oooh, it looks awesome. I personaly think that doesn't mean diddly squat when the cake is in-edible! Do you want a really good cake from a local place? Grauls in Ruxton has *fantastic* cake. Oh and they're exceptionally cheaper but make pretty cakes too.

Duff has let the fame go to his head. He's one of the rudest, most arrogant person I have met. Quite appalled they were chosen to make the inauguration cake.

We got our wedding cake from these guys 2 years ago back when they still were recording. The process was really cool since both of us watched the show. We had to drive to the bakery for the tasting, which was a pain since we lived in Philly at the time but we figured it would be well worth the extra effort once we finally got to see our cake. I was obsessed with the idea of getting to help design our wedding cake while still being surprised of how amazing it would turn out...like how the people on the show reacted when they finally got to see their cakes. We needed a Charm CIty cake! We really wanted a 5tier but since their cakes are so dam expensive we had to settle with 4 tiers. We couldnt decide on just one flavor so their idea was to have a different flavor on each layer. We picked 3 flavors, with top two being red velvet. We did banana foster and one other which I dont remember. It took forever to decide the design we wanted but we came prepare with some ideas. I was having a winter wedding w/ lots of ice blue and silver and touches of navy. I wanted an ice blue ''Christmas town'' cake. Think 3D models of miniature town buildings and people, like that of department 56. We really love Christmas and what better cake for us to have our cake show that. Department 56 was our way of attemping to get some sort of vibe into our wedding. We told them to really out do themselves and have the town buildings be 3D and to ass people & trees. I even asked for an ice skating rink with a hot coco bar. This cake was around $2,500. 4 tiers...enough for 120 but not my 150 guests & WAY over budget. At this point everyone was really excited to see this cake so there was no way I was backing out of the contract. I put my deposit on it and headed back to Philly dreaming of my wedding cake....freaking out really! I needed this to be perfect, not only for my sanity and my husbands, but for my dad's wallet who was gracious enough to pay for this obscenely expensive cake. I tried desperately to relax, knowing that faith was a good friend...I've seen their show and all the people who LOVED their cakes and I've tasted it now so I knew it was delicious. I shouldnt worry. I focused on the flowers instead now to take my mind off the insanity this cake created. January 8th came and in a few hours I got to finally marry my best friend....and I got to see my cake!! Not that the cake was more important then my wedding (hell no) but this was a gift to myself thanks to daddy a dream of mine came true that day as well. My cake was nestled on its own little table next to our sweetheart table. It was ice blue, like I asked. It had my snow globe topper on it from precious moments...like I asked. My ice skating rink was there with the hot coco bar and even little people skating...I was happy! Then my hubby pointed out that the 3D town....wasnt 3D at all and the designs were only on the front, not the sides or back of the cake. They had me send them tons of emails for idea of different buildings they could make. So I sent them a ton of buildings from Department 56 like the toy maker, church, show shop, etc. It took a lot of time too since I had to go to a store, unpack them, take pictures, and send them so they could see the buildings from all angles. I shouldn't have been the one to do this but I did because I wanted my cake to be perfect. My $2,500 cake... Anyway.. None of these were 3D, not only making the time I spent hunting down those dam buildings a waste, but ignoring our contract and our wishes for our cake. Now maybe they phrased things while we were in the office to benefit themselves here but then why bother making me go all the way to 10 different stores just to find those dam models set up so I could take pictures of them? The point of this rant...none of them were 3D. Instead we got a bunch of flat designs pasted onto our cake. So yeah...not 3D, in anyway. Honestly I felt sick the moment I realized. After shelling out $2,500 you EXPECT the cake to be the way you asked it to be. But yeah..problems happen and things change. I should have been informed. To be clear..3D (which we explained to them at our meeting) means 'popping out'...building have 4 walls and a roof...you build 4 walls and then put them together into a house and then design it into (example) a toy shop by using the pictures I send. THAT would have been an amazing cake!!! -which is why we went with them. We wanted an AMAZING cake and not some average cake that I could make at home. I bake..I could have done this. To be fair, the cake was still well done. The flavors were good, just not nearly as good as at our tasting. It was dry, not moist like I remembered. My guests were still impressed by it so I didn't look like an idiot after blabbing to everyone that our cake was going to be done by Charm City. I'm just glad everyone liked it...I just wish I love it too. Knowing what it should have been was upseting..& still is

I've been dying to get a cake from here since the beginning of Ace of Cakes. Fast forward about 8 years and my "dream" finally came true! My husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told him the only thing I could think of was a cake from here! We went online and saw that you could purchase one of the top tier cakes for a fraction of what one of their "real" cakes cost. They had about 30 different top tier designs to choose from, as well as a limited assortment of cake flavors. The Charm City Cake Autograph cake immediately caught my eye. It had the Charm City Cake logo and the staff autographed it with edible marker, so cool! We placed our order and picked it up the following weekend. Once we got home, the cake looked so amazing that I didn't even want to cut into it! I chose the Maple Cinnamon Roll flavor and it was amazing! It was three layers of cinnamon swirls and with a delicious maple frosting between the layers. The cake came with a page of instructions for getting the cake home and storing it. My husband and I took a good 5 days to even put a dent into the cake, it was definitely large enough for a party! Overall, I was very satisfied with the ease of ordering, choices of designs and flavors, and of course the presentation and taste!

Charm City Cakes, the Baltimore bakery that had its own Food Network show. First, let's get this out of the way - they're out of reach financially for many. If you don't have a thousand to drop on a cake go to one of the other great bakeries in town. However, their cakes are awesome, and I have enjoyed my bite of every one I have ever tasted. I helped plan a cake with Lenovo during CES 2011, and the cake they delivered was awesome (they drove across country to deliver it) and enjoyed by all. The one that I had at a recent event was also good. Are they the best I've ever had? No. Are they worth the money? Eh, depends. Are they good? Sure.

I attended an event for my brother in law recently in VA. He and my sister ordered a cake from Charm City Cakes. They spent a lot of money of this cake yet I would take my business elsewhere for several reasons. 1. The cake did not arrived in time for the event. We had to stay at the event site aproximately an hour after the event ended to wait for the cake. None of the guests got to see the cake and we didn't have it as part of the event. 2. The cake was not decorated as discussed. The agreed upon design was not followed. 3. Mold was visible on the cake within a few days. I would say, it wasn't worth the money.

Before I start my review, I wanted to say that I'm surprised by some of the negative reviews here, including people docking stars for cost! Here's my take! Charm City Cakes isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. A few years ago, I wanted to do a special cake for my Mom and husband for their birthdays (we were throwing a party in between the two dates). Unfortunately, the cost was so high, we couldn't go through with it. However, as a result of that inquiry, I got on their mailing list. This past November, CCC was offering a limited edition Thanksgiving cake that looks like sweet potato casserole but is a pumpkin chocolate chip cake. The cost was pricey but within my budget. Shipping was super costly, but they ship overnight and it must stay cold, so I did it anyway! (Total cost for cake and shipping was about $153.) We figured this would be a good way to try their cake for less than the special order price. The cake arrived the day before Thanksgiving, exactly as I requested. It was wrapped well and still cold, with directions to keep it fresh. The next day, I set the cake out to bring it to room temperature (per the directions). After our turkey meal and an after dinner walk, we cut into the cake. Oh. My. Gosh. We instantly knew why this bakery is such a big deal! The cake is SO rich, moist, and incredibly tasty!!! There is always a major difference between grocery store/regular bakery buttercream and real, true, high quality buttercream. No funky aftertaste! This cake, because of its richness, could easily serve 12 people, which is not bad! We ate every single crumb and loved every bit of it! I'm not sure we'll ever be able to afford a special order cake, but we will absolutely keep our eyes peeled for more 'order by mail' opportunities! You will not be disappointed!! So yummy! (Wish I still had some left to eat now!! Haha!)

Charm City Cakes was my first choice for my husband's 40th birthday cake and they made the design process simple and easy. I couldn't come in, so we did our design consult via phone. They knew just the right cake and it was delivered on time to the venue. Cake looked amazing and was very moist and flavorful. I went with chocolate espresso, but I take one star off only because I personally didn't get enough espresso seemed more like chocolate to me. But it was delicious and was a very cool cake. Will definitely recommend and use them in the future!

I am only rating the jar cake that a friend brought me from a recent trip to Baltimore. It was supposed to be ginger, but you were hard pressed to actually taste the ginger. In the whole jar, maybe 3 spoonfuls had a hint of ginger, the rest was tasteless and rather heavy. The cake texture wasn't bad, but it was totally overpowered by the buttercream (if that's what it was). Needs more ginger, needs the flavor to be evenly blended into the creme. I can't speak for their fancy cakes, but I wouldn't go out of my way for a cake here based on this jar cake. Cute idea though, cake in a jar, too bad the product isn't worthy of the idea.

Okay, I don't know what people are talking about... I just ate a huge piece of Charm City Cakes red velvet cake and it was moist and delicious! We got one of the ready made top tier cakes, so maybe the big cakes are drier? Everyone there was super nice to us and seemed very professional. I'm a fan of the show and was a little afraid that the illusion would be ruined. However they met all my expectations. So glad I made the trip!

When I heard there would be a real Ace of Cakes creation at a party I was about to attend I was excited to see what all the hype was about. When I heard that the cake was $1,000 I felt a little ill, but was still hoping for a tasty cake....My expectation was way too high. It tasted stale, dry, and chalky. Sure, it may have been hard to make, but the flavor shouldn't be compromised. I am usually overjoyed with any type of dessert, but this cake just made me sad :o(

AMAZING!! I ordered my sister's bridal shower cake from here a few years back and it had to be ordered months in advance and I paid a pretty penny for it... I don't know why others didn't have such great luck but the cake was beautiful - it looked just like a Tiffany's jewelry box and the chocolate cake was moist and really good and chocolatey... I would only be able to afford this place for a very special person or event... definitely not your go to place for a regular birthday cake! Maybe I'll order from here if still possible for my great-grandmother's 100th birthday in November... this place is definitely on the high-end of bakeries and they're on TV so you know they're not your average baker!

Great looking cakes. Amazing show. Taste pretty good. Insanely expensive. I think the reason some people hate the cakes is because they eat the fondant. This part is not tasty, and shouldn't be eaten! If you eat the actual cake part, its not bad. The main reason you would want a cake from them is if you want something fantastic looking, and difficult to make. And have a lot of spare cash lying around. Otherwise opt for the sheet cake from Costco. :-)

If I could give them zero stars I would. They made my wedding cake, and it was disgusting, dry and almost tasteless except for the faint aftertaste of cardboard. (i'm not joking or even exaggerating...grocery store cakes are more edible) Most of it was thrown away, and I found that folks took one bite and stopped. They need to get back to basics of baking. It's great that they can do all this great fondant work, but they might as well be decorating styrofoam.

I attended a wedding last month where they had both the wedding cake and groom's cake made by Charm City Cakes. Both were beautiful works of art. However, they were completely inedible. They were dry, tasteless, crumbly and could not even be considered food. I was very embarrassed for the bride who noticed that nobody would eat cake! I do not understand why people still attempt to "serve" these types of cakes. Brides listen up! If you have to go this route then get the cake made on a false bottom. Get a delicious sheet cake to serve your guests....it's a win win! And, you will save money!

Before the show began, I found out about Charm City and went in for a tasting for my wedding cake. Duff sat down with us, drew out our design (several designs, actually), and discussed possible flavor and decor combinations. We left the bakery with a huge box of samples, got home, and pigged out. Everything was delicious. We ended up going with the Tiramisu, Bananas Foster and Amaretto flavors for the wedding cake, and Pear Spice for the Groom's cake. Duff and Mary Alice were a pleasure to work with. Very attentive to my various concerns, always called me back, emailed promptly, delivered the cake on time, etc. I loved my wedding cake. It looked spectacular and tasted even better. Some people dislike the cake...my best guess is that they love a light, spongy cake. Charm City is all about the dense, rich cake, with bold, sweet frostings. If that's not your style, then Charm City probably isn't for you. But if you want an amazing work of art, and a damn good tasting cake, you won't be disappointed.

Not to sound super dramatic, but I am bummed out to give this place two stars. I have watched their show since it started airing and was excited to get a chance to actually try out one of their cakes at an event. The cake looked good, but tasted incredibly dry and flavorless. The cake itself was a plain white cake. I'm not sure if they were shooting for vanilla, but the flavor did not come through. The frosting in the middle tasted like plain butter cream. I could not make out a flavor at all. I understand that the cake has to be made ahead of time because of the time they need to decorate, but I didn't even have a piece from the 'cake', I had a piece from the extra sheet cakes they brought. I overheard someone next to me say, "I'm not even going to waste the calories" and then she promptly threw her piece of cake in the trash. Maybe I caught them on a bad week, but if you are paying thousands of dollars on a cake, I would want to know that they do not have bad weeks.

I am surprised that after the TV show and all the publicity that there aren't more reviews of Charm City and Mary Alice and the whole gang? I am only disappointed that we could not get them to do our PA wedding cake - we were still (barely) within their travel range but, alas, due to their MASS popularity they were already booked for our wedding date. Everything looks great - and the flavors (white russian cake has chocolate vodka in the cake batter and kahlua in the buttercream frosting) sound marvy. Can't wait to taste one. And Jeff is a HOTTIE.

Pretty cool looking cake was made for the event I attended. I just happened to make the mistake of taking a bite of it. Um, that was the worst tasting cake I ever had! I found out what the price was and felt like throwing it through the window of this place. This is a "bakery" run by failed art students. These are not professional bakers. These are hipsters who make foul tasting, fancy looking cakes. Don't waste your money. If they are going to charge 5 times more than their surrounding competitors, at least make the cake taste a little better than stale cornbread. Note the other 5-star reviews here and the fact that they have never actually TASTED one of these cakes.

Another overdue review. My cousin, for her daughter's first birthday last April, ordered the cake from Charm City Cakes. The level of detail on the cake was impeccable AND the cake tasted delicious too! The icing on the cake (pun intended) was that they ended up getting aired on tv! Woohoo! What a way to celebrate a birthday!

This review is just for the taste of their cupcakes. My family bought 2 dozen cupcakes from them for my surprise 30th (awesome family...I know!). Everyone raved about the mini cupcakes all night long! I had a few leftover - nearly a week later and they still taste amazingly fresh!

Charm City Cakes was cool enough to be one of the sponsors of our 2009 PVSC scooter rally, which included a cake shaped like a treasure chest, complete with chocolate coin dubloons. Now, I'm not gonna lie, every time I see that show I think it's all sizzle and no steak, as my old boss used to say (irritatingly). Turns out, not so. Lots of steak. And by steak I mean delectable cake - and plenty of sizzle too because that cake looked amazing. The five stars is for their sponsorship, their yummy wears, the fact that there was enough for everyone, that they're down with a bunch of debauched scooterists and that Chef wears an Intelligentsia hat. Nice one, Charm City!
