Pricey but delicious. The chocolate croissants were fabulous, the quiche was really yummy, but $30 for 2 quiches and 2 croissants is ridiculous! But I'd give 5 stars just to walk in and smell that place. MAN it smells good and the pastry case made me gain 7 lbs. It looks awesome.

Empty on a Wednesday afternoon. Plush chairs and a great place to read a newspaper. Excellent view of the harbor and friendly staff. The baked goods are really high quality but as stated, a little expensive.

Great place for coffee, tea and dessert. Croissants and cakes are very good. With that said, nothing like Lyon so try not to compare. :) Just enjoy this nice cafe on the water in Fells Point - you won't be disappointed. Only thing I would stay away from is chocolate croissant as the amount of chocolate in it is minimal. They have a different type of chocolate type of pastry just like a croissant (cannot remember what they call it but it was just nex to it on the shelf) that is MUCH better for same price. Oh yeah, free WiFi!!! Enjoy!!!

Half the time I come to Bonaparte it's closed, but that's not normally a problem since the bakers run a take out service from the back door. Walk around the corner to the back of the bakery at night and you purchase bread, croissants, and other desserts. Good stuff!

This is the best bakery in Fells Point...but it's not really authentically "French" in the way that I think of French patisseries. For one thing, it's too bright. It looks almost like the kind of patisserie you'd find in Disney Land, somewhere beside the Small World ride. But the coffee is really good, as are the pastries, desserts and sandwiches. They have ample seating, both indoors and out (when the weather permits), and it's right near the harbor, which is (kind of) scenic. It's a bit on the pricy side, but worth it.

I must say that I have never actually been inside this place. How can I give this place 4 stars if I have never been inside? Well, that's because you can purchase baked goods from the back door after hours! Just walk up to the door, knock, and the baker will sell you fresh croissants and other items. Hot, flaky, and straight out of the oven. Extremely delicious as a late night snack. Only $3 for a fresh chocolate croissant at 10:30pm...can't beat that. I saw the menu online and I am going to go during normal business hours soon. If it's as good as the late-night back door bakery, I'll upgrade my review to 5 stars.

Three words. Pain au chocolat. MMMMMM. Reminds me of Paris in that succulent bite of crusty croissant shell and rich chocolate filling. Oh, two more words. Almond croissant. A taste of France never hurt anybody. Especially this francophile with a penchant for waterfront views.

cute little place that we ran into while taking our mini-tour of baltimore. ordered a turkey sandwich with cheese, fresh ingredients, turned out to taste great!

The inside of the bakery actually has good bones and is huge for a non-chain bakery. The tables and the columns are very inviting and very european. The outside awning has a good view of the water and gets a good breeze, although you are viewing the Pirate tour pick up point. The inside definitely is in need of some repairs like a leaky ceiling which the owners put buckets out to collect the water. There is no shortage of people coming in to order bread, buy desserts and sitting outside though. I'm giving this place 4 stars based on the ambience - casual, yet cozy and great for a leisurely morning reading spot AND for the food. They make great coffee (not on my review as I don't drink coffee, but on the people I've gone with's reviews) and the desserts are fantastic. The bread is incredible. No wonder there is a sign that if you plan to buy more than 5 baguettes you need to preorder them. The patisserie case has very French pastries. I absolutely love the pain au chocolat. The other 3 desserts I've had there were all light, airy, not too sweet, and very enjoyable. I love coming here on Saturday mornings. The prices are great too. Other French bakeries in the area are much more expensive and do not have as friendly of waitstaff.

We had the ham and cheese croissant and the spinach and feta croissant for a quick breakfast. Nice little place to chill out for a bit. Comfortable surroundings. The smells of the pastries draw you in!! It was a nice treat while away for the weekend.

I've always driven by Bonaparte saying "I need to try it," and then forget about when I'm at home. Well, today, j and I decided to go to Kawasaki. However, it was closed, and that brought us to Bonaparte. We arrived for lunch, and was immediately surprised as we opened the door. It was larger than we expected, and its decor felt warm and inviting. The best part about the dining area - other than the opulent clock that greets you as you walk in - are the chairs!!! Their burgundy leather chairs usually belonging in a lawyer's office were super comfy!! Restaurants, take note! Comfortable seating is always an added plus when dining out. So why only 3 stars? Well, this being my first review, I don't want to start dishing out 4-5 stars so liberally. Also, I'm basing it off of what I had there, which was the lunch special, and I thought it was good, but not great. First, the "very good": - For $13, you get a choice between a cold or hot sandwich or a quiche (comes with salad and potato chips), as well as a drink (tea and coffee only get one refill) and a dessert/pastry. I thought that was a good deal, especially since it was a whole sandwich and not a half. I ended up pretty satisfied afterwards, and I was pretty hungry going in. - Both sandwiches we ordered (hot ham and cheese, hot smoked salmon) came on good bread. The smoked salmon was served on what looked like Texas toast but was very light, so that it didn't overwhelm the smoke salmon as much as I thought it would. The bread that the ham sandwich was on was nice and toasted as well. Not sure what kind of bread it was, but it was put on a panini grill and came out just right. - The desserts, a slice of flan (egg custard cake) and trobezzione(sp?) (Bavarian creme filed with fresh fruit (mandarin oranges) between two slice of Brioche bread) were very good!!! The Bavarian creme was especially tasty, whipped up to be fluffy and light, yet not flavorless and bland. the brioche bread that it was between complemented the creme very well! You didn't taste just bread, but got both flavors and textures in your mouth, which was great. The little pieces of mandarin oranges in the creme were subtle in flavor, yet it's presence was there. Just the right amount of sweetness for me.The flan was also pretty good. I don't know too much about flan, but it wasn't overly sweet, which again suited my tastes. - The portions were nice, and the coffee came in quite a large cup, which made up for the refill limit. Also, they served it with hot steamed milk instead of cream, which I thought was unique. And now, just the "good" - The sandwiches, while good, weren't spectacular. They did their job. Both were tasty, and I was satisfied with it, but it did not blow me away in taste. I thought it was interesting how they added tomato and lettuce to the ham and cheese sandwich and grilled it all under the panini press. It gets the lettuce soggy and warm, and that just doesn't feel right in your mouth. It also seemed as if the salad and chips were hastily added as sides to finish the dish, and the salad was your run-of-the-mill iceberg lettuce garden salad with Italian dressing. - I was expecting a little more out of the coffee. Nice portion, but was not as robust as I'd hoped. And the tea was not freshly brewed; I saw them take it out of a store bought jug. Perhaps a little nit picky, but just writing what I saw. - We sat by the door, and while that wasn't a big deal, since their outdoor seating was not completely set up, the tables and chairs were place alongside the main entrance. So we had a good view of plastic chairs and tables. Perhaps they could've found a better place to store it? Well, that is about it. I was thinking about bumping up my rating to 3.5 stars, but that is not an option. The desserts and breads are obviously the strong point, as the other reviews mention, and rightly so. In fact, if I'd simply eaten their pastries, this would've been a 4 star review. But we went to eat lunch, and while a good value, and overall satisfying, I didn't think it was great. Their lunch items are secondary to the baked goods. And that is fine, since it isn't their focus. The whole experience was good, with parts being very good, but good + very good does not equal great. So 3 stars it is!

I was really hopeful about this bakery when I walked up to the counter to order...the pastries are very pretty. The items we ordered, though, were only okay. I had a layered chocolatey, raspberry triangle-shaped macaroon thing, which was good. I also tried a chocolate chip meringue, which was pretty bad. It looks good, I grant you, but the chocolate chips didn't taste like actual chocolate. I found myself wanting to pick them out. The espresso was fine. I liked the atmosphere of the place. It's very spacious, the seating is comfortable, and it's located on the water. I did enjoy hanging out there and reading a book, but I wish the pastries tasted as good as they looked.

Great coffee, pastries, and atmosphere. My book club has met here twice and the staff has been very gracious and accommodating, even helping us rearrange the tables to fit everyone together. Highly recommended!

Without question, the best bread I'm Baltimore. I have been here more times than I can count. The pastries are uniformly excellent, and quite decadent. The whole wheat and multigrain loaves are without equal in this town. I would match them up with any bread joint in NYC as well. It is a great place to go for breakfast. It is quaint, has a nice view of the harbor, and has cozy chairs. Not full service, but good for pastries, coffee, and quiche. A must, when in town!

  • Aldo F.

3 stars for food, 4 stars for service (the rude attendants are gone) and 5 for ambiance. The place is delightful to sit for a "delish" snack and a cup of (just Ok) coffee. You might find yourself wanting the pastries to be as perfect and delicious as they look.

I LOVE this bakery! Bonaparte Breads has it all: great location overlooking the water in Fell's Point, quick and friendly service, and excellent food! I love coming here for their brunch/lunch specials, which comes with three things: a slice of quiche or half a sandwich, a side salad, and a dessert for (if I remember correctly) $12.95. I definitely second Prachi P's review in that all bets are off in trying to be health conscious here...and yes everything is "gastronomically appealing." You pretty much can't go wrong, no matter what you order here.

Pastries here are decent to good. Baguette mediocre at best. Sandwiches are decent and location is premier. However, service here is consistently not good. Last time we went, I ordered a croque monsieur. Half an hour later, still no sandwich. I went to the front to ask about it and they gave me a ridiculous response that the panini maker hadn't been plugged in. 10 minutes later, still no sandwich and no apology or explanation. I asked for a refund and left. The service was totally rude!!! Go for coffee and a pre-made pastry, but forget about getting made to order items.

I came here Sunday morning to meet a friend for coffee and something from the bakery. Like some previous reviewers have noted, the interior borders on overdone Frenchiness. However, I really did like the seating and baroque/classical music that plays at a pleasant volume. I arrived before my friend and ordered the ham and cheese croissant and a large coffee. The croissant arrived warm and was rather delicious, but this brings me to the most important part of the review, the coffee . . . . It was among the worst tasting I've had in my life. I'm a coffee enthusiast, and I can often detect where something went wrong, but with this coffee I struggle to fathom what made it taste so offensive. Acrid and acidic, eliciting an involuntary wincing expression on my face, no joke. I have to agree with Justin L. Go to 7-11 down Thames Street instead (or if you really want legit coffee, go to Spro in Hampden or Peregrine in DC). I took some time to observe the person making espresso drinks and they were all pretty much botched. For as 'cafe-esque' as this place is trying to be, they could use a drastic coffee and espresso overhaul. My friend arrived and I warned against the coffee. She's wanted a savory item and is vegetarian, but unfortunately the ham and cheese was the only savory item available. Everything else was chocolatey custardy sugary etc. She got a plain croissant that was decent but unremarkable. A spinach and cheese croissant or quiche would be great. I wanted to like this place because of the unique ambiance and approach they take. Many bakeries and coffee places attempt to be 'cozy' but Bonparte goes for classy and classical. Unfortunately the product doesn't warrant a return.

Bonaparte is a good place to relax and enjoy a pastry and tea or a light lunch. Lots of natural light with comfortable seating - normally, you'd find these chairs in a dark bar circa 1970's (recall the bar in the movie Jackie Brown) or in a law office, also circa 1970's, but they work really well here. The food is tasty, but it's not ooh la la, as I was expecting from all the other great reviews. The soup is homemade and is served with fresh bread! The pastries are delectable, but again, I did not close my eyes and find myself in Montmartre. It's more expensive than I'd like it to be. The staff are friendly and they tolerate, even welcome, children! I look forward to returning in the Spring when I can sit outside and people watch along Thames.

I have been coming down here for a couple years (the Harbor and surrounding neighborhoods). I found that the French bread is delicious !!! It is crusty outside and soft and chewy inside. I thought a loaf would be expensive because of the location. That was not the case. Excellent bread for a reasonable price! The people are always courteous to me. I like to stop here for the bread.

We might have caught them on an off-day, but the bread and pastries we got were not all that good. The place seems totally comfortable inside, but we were in a hurry and just bought some things and left. The rye bread we got left a funny after-taste and we weren't quite sure about it. I decided to throw it out. The meringues were way too large, which usually means they will be too hard, but we took a chance. Bad decision - they were too hard. The pain au chocolat was good. The white country bread was just ordinary. So, kind of uneven, not what we expected after reading all the other reviews.

French pastries and coffee hooray!! The raspberry filled chocolate covered tortes are the best. But lately someone always buys them up before I get there! Bonaparte's is located on a pier by the water. There is a fair amount of seating inside but you may have to wait if it is busy.

The BEST bakery in Baltimore. Just thinking about it makes me salivate. I feel like a Pavlovian dog, only the words "Bonaparte Pastry" replace the bell cue. The bakery produces the most delectable treats... normally I'm a health food freak but their food is SO gastronomically appealing that it doesn't matter. Their location in Fell's Point is also wonderful. It's lovely to just get a chocolate croissant and hang out on the waterfront.

Fantastic French bakery! There is no better baguette anywhere in the Baltimore/DC area. Great for a leisurely breakfast of coffee and pastries, with large comfy library style chairs to relax in with a newspaper or good book. Also some interesting people watching on the weekends, although occasionally you'll get the tourist crowd from the nearby ferry docking.

This little cafe has an interesting atmosphere - about half the customers seem to be European migrants or visitors. It's on the pricey side at $13 or so for lunch, but their drink-sandwich/quiche-dessert combo is a satisfying meal. Good place to sit, relax, and read by yourself or chat with a friend. The outdoor seating is great during the summer. Sandwiches range from unexceptional to good, but the desserts (I liked a pistachio dessert) can be excellent. Coffee and tea were quite good.

This place is great. It has a fantastic feel, great location, and a staff that obviously cares. I love the fact they DON'T label things in the case and take the time to discuss what you may or may not like. My only complaint is that if you aren't there early the pastries aren't fresh. The Chocolate Croissant with Vanilla filling was too dry and lacked any sort of Vanilla identity. But the Golden Raisin and Vanilla pastry held a little better (although fresh would have been nice.) This is the kind of place you need to hit fresh from the oven, but is worth stopping in.

This quaint French café serves up tasty hot beverages, pastries and sandwiches. While their pastries are amazing, I would have to say their specialty is quiche. They have at least seven tasty varieties to choose from and they all feature fresh ingredients. If you don't fancy some tasty quiche, don't let that stop you because their hot and cold sandwiches are enjoyable too. They pair quality ingredients with fresh, top notch bread. The location is great and next to the water. They have a relaxing spot outside - when the pirates are not around...

I live in Fells Prospect and work from home on Mondays, in which I don't usually leave my house, but when I do, it's because I don't have food for lunch or I have cabin fever, this week, both of the above were true. I wanted to go somewhere that I have never been and that offered free wifi so I could work for a couple hours. And, all I have to say is why have I never been here before!?!??!?!?!!?? On the water - check Free wifi - check Delicious coffee - check Delicious lunch - check Delicious deserts - check Ample seating - check Yep, it pretty much hit everything on my list. I got the lunch special for $15, it seems steep but listen to everything I got: mozzarella and tomato panini (oozing with fresh mozzarella cheese, omg), side salad (included fresh broccoli, cucumber and carrots)... I asked the woman at the register if I could order my drink and desert after my lunch and she kindly obliged. So a little later I ordered a cappuccino (yep I was allowed to get that as my free drink, not just a soda) and an almond, chocolate croissant. All of the above was delicious, I could only eat half of everything so I had a nice to go box for my lunch the next day. So yes $15 is steep but with a cappuccino and lunch the next day I couldn't complain. Cappuccino was delicious, the croissant was a little hard on one edge, but it was otherwise soft and flaky deliciousness. Two complaints... the only power supply is located in the very center of the restaurant, and only one table for each outlet. I did not opt to sit there, because I was doing work for a company and felt like there was no private angle to sit since you are in the isle and dead center of the place. Secondly, I am a graphic designer, and they need some better menus and better signage, it is rather sad for how cute the place is. They also need signs for their deserts, everyone had to ask what everything was, that has to get annoying. Such a simple fix! I should offer my services!

I do my daily morning run past this cafe and I knew I had to stop in for breakfast one morning. I chose to take my daughter with me today and was not disappointed! I ordered a large latte and a few pastries (one to eat and rest to take home). Our food arrived quickly and I was pleased to receive a real latte, not the same bland lattes I get from some chain coffee shops. The pastry (I believe is was a briose cake) was fantastic and my daughter couldn't get enough of it. I definitely recommend sitting outside if you can. It's a great spot to people watch and enjoy the view of the bay. I'll definitely be a repeat customer while I'm still living here in the Inner Harbor.

Really great café with an amazing view of the harbor. It has great drink options, pastries look good (admittedly didn't try them), and great outdoor seating in the summer time. Plenty of indoor seating if you want to hang out and read. I would recommend highly.

We went to Bonaparte Breads seeking out a place to go for coffee that had an excellent view. The view was perfect - we could watch the sidewalk traffic in Fells Point while enjoying the Harbor View. We went at lunch time so my daughter and I each enjoyed a sandwich and side salad - my daughter also enjoyed a strawberry fruit tart and a hot chocolate, while my Mo and I each enjoyed a coffee - Mom had a apple croissant. Out sandwiches were absolutely amazing!!! I had the roast beef, mustard, onion and cheese pannini while my daughter had a tomato, pesto and mozzarella pannini. They were nicely warmed without the grease that some panninis have. The flavor was amazing. The side salads were so good that my daughter (10 y.o.) asked if she could have a second salad. The coffee was okay - I would not go back just for the coffee. I did not think the desserts were all that good. I brought home a chocolate croissant for my wife and some chocolate chip cookies. She thought the croissant was dry and very little chocolate. The cookies were hard and not much different from Keebler cookies. The sandwiches brought the review up to four stars. I would definitely go back for lunch and a the view. Very pleasant staff, nice atmosphere.

Delicious breads! I love coming here to pick up a loaf of bread and right before they close, they will sell their breads, etc discounted (I think half off?). However, there's usually not much for the pickin' at that time. The breads are consistently delicious. I've had a lemon, sea salt loaf that was AMAZING! The croissants are pretty good, but if you go in the evening, you can definitely tell that they've been sitting out all day, so for those, I'd recommend going earlier to get them. Later in the day, it's a bit soggy and heavier from all the butter they use...

Their freshly baked bread is always great! This is a perfect little European bakery tucked away in Fells Point. The view of the harbor complement the French designed interior. A great place to sip your coffee or hot chocolate. The stars of the show remain the pastries and breads. I would recommend their perfect croissant. It is wonderfully crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside, and delectably buttery. One step inside and you are sure to return!

I am so glad that my friends and I randomly happened to be in front of Bonaparte Breads when all of us started to feel hungry after a leisurely stroll along the Inner Harbor. Bonaparte Breads serves freshly baked breads, French pastries, sandwiches, soups, tea, and coffees in a quaint, shabby, colonial-style, yet unpretentious environment. Prices are reasonable and affordable. Good breakfast/brunch place in Inner Harbour with a waterfront view next to the ship.

cute cafe that's relatively quiet during the week. the croissants here are large and cheap $3 ($1.50 for a mini croissant). and when it's close to closing time, they have BYGO on their croissants--they don't taste good at all the next day so I would recommend you eat them the same day. got their regular coffee once but it was bland and not hot enough. their lattes and mochas are better. free wifi is a big perk.

On my last morning in Baltimore's beautiful Inner Harbor I hit the streets early in search of only one thing - fresh baked breads. So I did a few searches online, plotted my route through Baltimore and - after 3 stops that didn't quite hit the mark - I arrived at Bonaparte Breads. As soon as I opened the door I smelled the aroma I was looking for. There's something about the smell of warm, fresh, buttery breads, scones, quiches, croissants, tarts and pastries - that draws me into my comfort zone. I ordered two Croissants and a Cappuccino and sat in the window light watching the harbor. The ambiance was French inspired with tall square columns, Provencal ceilings, and glass chandeliers. There were prints of Jacques-Louis David's version of Napoleon Crossing the Alps and even a letter to the owners from the French Consulate thanking them for catering an official diplomatic event for them. With the harbor just outside I enjoyed the peace and quiet and the food as customers came in and out for lunch or to pick up their baked goods. My croissants - the largest I've seen - were tightly wound, moist inside and had a crisp flavorful crust that was laminated in butter. An hour later I refilled my cappuccino and purchased the last 2 petit pains they had. They were served with rich butter (higher butterfat) and I enjoyed them from their soft center to their thick crust. Typically I don't pour on the carbs like that but I was on a mission and that's what my mind, body and spirit wanted on a rainy Baltimore morning. Sitting by the window I had a sense of hearth and home. I had what I was looking for - Atmosphere. With service improvements this could be 5 star.

  • Emma W.

I like this cafe more for the setting than the coffee or food. The croissants and other laminated pastries are very nice but the refrigerator-case pastries look better than they taste. The soup is often very good, the sandwiches are lackluster. The coffee is solid but nuthin special. The bread is pretty good but I don't go out of my way to buy it here. (Cunningham's is better.) The classical music playing inside can feel a little over the top but it's a nice airy space. The seating is comfortable if not plentiful. Service is okay, neither remarkably good nor problematic. They are prompt in bringing out food and drinks. What's really nice about Bonaparte is the outdoor seating in the warmer months. It is right on the bay and it's a lovely palce to spend the afternoon.

My love! Chocolate croissants and lattes!! I also love the way this place feels. Over the top Napoleon themed and classical music. It's tacky in the right way (like Versailles). Love it so much!!

Terrible coffee. Asked for a decaf drip coffee. They made me an Americano...which was disgusting. I complained. No apology. No offer to get me something different. Really just subpar. Pastries are ok.

CLOSED as of 1/30/15. Locks changed and employees given no notice. Owner supposedly owed rent and taxes. The neighborhood is very shocked and sad since the place was always packed.

  • Cherpumple F.

No bueno. It smells awesome, but it's not that awesome. I really don't know what the hype is about. Sandwiches are on regular bread, nothing special. Salads are tiny, and for the price you could have just gone to Whole Foods, mixed a bunch of greens in a tupperware and had a better meal. Baked desserts are probably what saves this place, but it's still not that great. And as for bread? Atwater wins in the realm of yeasty dough rising. Lastly, what really set me off, was that their outdoor umbrellas fell on one of their customers (not in my party) while I was there lunching with a friend and her new baby. Not one server came out to make sure the customer was okay (she had fallen, scraped her elbow, and then the umbrella flew at us, missed us by a hair and then struck the ground)... If you want coffee, go to Dooby's, Artifact, or Spro.

Amazing pastries, waterfront views. What more do you need? I used to frequent Bonaparte's for late-night croissants (they opened around midnight and would sell pastries for cash as they came out of the oven) but I heard a rumor the back-door business got shut down.

I love this place. Yeah, service can be a little slow regardless of how many people are there but it's a great place to study or just relax and enjoy some yummy food. Their croissants are amazing! I've tried their almond, chocolate almond, and plain croissant and have loved all of them. My fave part about this place is the free refills on coffee, big bonus when your cramming for an exam!

This review is based on only coming one time, as an out of town visitor. And only on the almond croissant I ate inside. But this is one of the best almond croissants I've had. Not at all dry. Not too almond pasty. Generous size. I even ordered one to go. Everything else looks so delicious I wish I could have tried more! Inside is tres European and was a nice warm place to kill time before heading off to the airport. If in town again I'll be back.

Nice local coffee shop, located on the water in historic Fells Point. Located in the Ann Street Warf, Bonaparte is an authentic cafe. Specializing in coffee, espresso based coffee drinks, home made bread, danish's and deserts are all for sale and most item's are less than $5. First off you won't find the super sugary coffee concoctions most people are used to from Starbucks, however this is just rich perfectly pulled espresso, steamed milk and milk foam. Most people will not know what they ordered if they try to compare this to Starbucks. Delicious and authentic to the style and just right. I am a little disappointed in myself for not finding this location sooner! Will be returning soon! - Homemade Bakery and Deserts are for sale - All ingredient's in their baked goods are listed. - No public restrooms, though they didn't seem too up tight when someone walked in and out after using them. -Parking is meter based, or if you know you'll be quick you might wanna try driving a parking a long the pier.

So sad that Bonaparte lost this location...but there is still some good news because the Savage Mills location is still open! Come visit facebook.com/pages/Bonap…

Bonaparte Breads provides great coffee and pastries for studying. The location is also perfect for a campus getaway. My only complaint is that they do not have longer hours.

Last week the fall landed with the feathered loft of a falling star. Outside the wind drew lines in the yellowed grass and the scent of the bay carried itself across the street to my house. I woke up, walked outside, walked back inside to put on sunglasses, and headed down to fells point. It was morning and I had already had an espresso from the daily grind, but I was hungry. The cobblestones were like corrugated footsteps I followed down the lane of my memory, and as I caught the smell of freshly made bread I found myself walking towards Bonaparte. Once I sat in the sun and ate pastries with a pale skinned girl, fire red hair a coronae of my fierce love for her. I remembered the sound of her fingertips upon the edge of a plate, sadness caught on porcelain like the inner rim of her ear. I remembered her pale green eyes and blinked to draw them from my memory as I walked in the door. The past is a thing of open spaces, or should be. The present remains sheltered inside, among the drawn fires of humanity. A shutting door sounds like a beating heart for a reason. Inside Bonaparte is a little slice of suburban france. The space is utilitarian - a bakery with a front from which people can buy things made on the premises. There are fresh breads lined up like soldiers on the counter, with a sign helpfully imploring you not to touch the bread; but they are so beautiful, the loaves like the warm fingers on a hand, that one would never touch them anyways without permission. The pastries and cakes are next to a display case that holds croissants - ham and cheese, chocolate, and others pastries. Though I usually get a tart, as their tarts are probably the best in Baltimore, I sometimes feel with slight whimsy the need for a ham and cheese croissant. They are, in my opinion, the best breakfast meal in all of Baltimore. I was told they did not have any, as they generally make them for the weekend. Bad news delivered by a beautiful girl that sank the anchor of my heart - but then another girl(beautiful as well, for they are always, always beautiful) told me that she would look in the back. It turns out that they had made two or three on a whim, and on a whim I bought one to go. There is an easy familiarity with the staff at Bonaparte and this is what makes me give them five stars. At any other bakery I would leave, shoulders bowed. At any other bakery I wouldn't feel that irrepressible glee that made me hop from foot to foot. Here, I found happiness ensconced in those friendly smiles and soft overtures. Here, I left with my croissant hot and ready to be eaten as I found my way back home - regretting, if for a moment, that the place I had just left was not my destination.

My mouth is watering as I am writing this review... Bonaparte Breads' quiches are pretty clutch, but it is definitely more of a pastry galore here. Their croissants are really good, but my favorite Bonaparte delicacy is definitely the Pain Au Chocolat. The funny thing is, I think other pastry stores think the Pain Au Chocolat is pretty darn good too. I've been to another pastry store in Ellicott City and saw something that resembled the Pain Au Chocolat, but I wasn't really sure. So I asked the cashier if they made that pastry, and she confirmed that their store bought it from Bonaparte Breads.

Cute harbor-side seating if you get here early enough, and it's a traditional french patisserie that's been well adapted to accommodate American dining (good size, good balance of indoor/outdoor, can be private or crowd-driven but not boisterous). It's the kind of culture cafe that's not intimidating or over-the-top. Also they do free coffee refills. And you can bring your laptop. And they have good wifi.

Oh my goodness! So glad I flexed on the vegan deal, so I could partake in the deliciousness of Bonaparte! I sent my boyfriend a smartphone picture of some of the displayed pastries; his response was "nomnom" and "lucky." So true! For a mid-morning snack or second breakfast, my sister, her husband, and I shared chocolate almond croissant, apple croissant, chocolate vanilla custard croissant. So ever-so decadently delicious! Could see why this is one of their favorite spots in the city. Apparently my parents and other sister also loved the delicious goodness of the croissants!

I don't use the word "delightful" often, but come on now... this place is just.... well, "delightful." It's cute and Parisian and just sort of makes you happy and relaxed when you come in. Today was my first time eating more than a bakery item. I ordered the spinach quiche for lunch (which comes with a side salad). Honestly, it was probably the best quiche I had had in years. Toward the end, it was getting a little salty, but that's really because it was such a big slab of it. I'm more of a "baby quiche" gal I guess. The side salad was fresh with a zesty little mustardy dressing and complimented the quiche very well. Although there's only fountain soda beyond the counter (a bit weird... I would expect Orangina bottles or something), I was able to cross cultures and order an Italian soda since they did have syrup and sparkling water available. Don't look for it on the menu though, because it doesn't exist. Almost every day was full at lunch, but surprisingly (thanks to the layout), it didn't feel overly crowded or loud - light chatter, but enough to set up your laptop and still work. My only complaint about Bonaparte is that there are only two double outlets in the whole place (in the pillars closes to the counter). If you are not fortunate enough to get one of the three tables available near them, you are going to be out of luck if you came here to work as well. Keep that in mind if come!

I love this little piece of France. Every time I go in Bonaparte, it brings back memories of my honeymoon. If you're looking for a modern bakery where you can sit and work on your laptop for hours, this isn't your place; at Bonaparte, break out your paperbacks and newspapers if you want to keep the authentic feel of the place. Every coffee drink I've had here has been amazing, and every pastry has been delish. Luckily, my office is a couple blocks away, so I've been able to grab lunch here; the portions are large and even the side salads are great. Like the wine bar next door, there is some great people watching to be had here. You can sit inside and glimpse into the bakery operations in the back, or sit outside and watch who is meandering around. I love going here to read and sit down with a latte. Definitely a place to relax and sit back for a bit.

I am a fan of Bonaparte and feel it is a gem within the he neighborhood. I stop in often to sample the pastries and have knocked on the door many of a time after hours for the freshly baked chocolate croissants. My one suggestion/wish for the managers: inventory seems to be an issue. Twice in the last three weeks we have brought guests in to sample the food and the bakery was sold out of almost everything--including the fan favorite schneke. This has become something of a pattern and as a regular, is somewhat disheartening. We love to show Bonaparte off but do not like the repeated let downs!!

I have been coming here for several years, mostly because my family is obsessed with going every time they are in town. This is a pretty traditional french pastry shop with a great choice of morning desserts and pastries. The coffee is really good, I highly recommend it. The price is a little high but you get what you pay for. The setting is very relaxing and the chair are very comfortable....outside seating too!

(08/17/2013) Location means a lot, has a great spot on the Ann Street Pier with outdoor seating, prime location. Pastries and bread are good, not the best ever. Got a chewy and crusty boule of Lemon-Rosemary bread, great grilled for paninis. An apple croissant and an almond croissant had multi-layered interiors, somewhat dry, kind of lacking in butteriness. It's an all right spot to people watch, get breakfast/brunch/afternoon coffee.

A prime location. An interesting old world interior. Patio seating on a cobblestone street for clement days. Fresh bread and pasteries baked on premesis and delectable coffee drinks to go with them. Staff are youthful, witty, and attractive. A true urban oasis.

Only have been for sandwiches. They are high quality and fresh. The real reason to go is the desserts. Not overly sugary like many American desserts but definitely sweet, soft and tasty.

I have not had any bread or pastries from Bonaparte Breads. So maybe those are great. But the beverages I've had have been meh... I've definitely had better Chai and Hot Chocolate. On the plus side, they have free wi-fi and outdoor seating. There are only a few outlets inside. I'd say it's a place to go mainly for the atmosphere and location (right near the water in Fells).

Has a few things that Patisserie Poupon does not, including ample indoor and outdoor seating and a view of the water, not to mention full lunches, breads, and a killer almond croissant. Regular pastries, croissant, pains au chocolat may be a hair below Poupon's standard, but are perfectly good. Together, the two establishments give Baltimore sufficient coverage in French baked goods and cafe culture. I come here often. Also - the mens' room is clean, but the subdued lighting gives it the aura of a cell in the Bastille.

Nice, affordable place for breakfast or a light lunch. Quiches and croissants were good. Coffee was just Ok. Was way too hot to sit outside, but that would've been a great place to sit by the water in the right weather.

I've been here a few times and kept returning to give it another chance, but alas I've continued to be disappointed with the food and service. We've been looking for a place with good baguettes; baguettes here are hard (almost too hard to cut). The croissants dont have much taste; the chocolate croissants just have a small bite of chocolate inside (less than 5% of the croissant was chocolate filled). After visiting Paris, Bonaparte cannot compare. The service is poor - we bused and cleaned the coffee-stained, crumb filled table we sat at, which we don't mind doing however there were used dishes and dirty tables throughout the cafe and the staff were not busy. On another occasion, two staff appeared to be arguing, visibly angry, and neglected their customers. The decor is a bit stuffy. The one redeeming factor is that it's a great location on the water in fells with outdoor seating and wi-fii.

Whenever I have moments of wanting fresh baked pastries and coffee for breakfast, I know that I satiate my craving by going to Bonaparte Cafe. Charming cafe tucked on a tiny wharf in Fells Point. Lots of French-influenced furniture and Napoleon portraits hanging around the place. In fact, so French of a place that (understandably) they don't serve soy milk with their coffees. However, the big hit for me are their freshly baked breads and pastries. I particularly like their croissants (of many kinds), made perfectly for dipping them in coffee! I've had some of their tarts, and they were just as tasty! The prices are reasonable for their pastries as well. A highly recommended place!

Bonaparte Breads boasts one of the best locations in the city, bar none. It's right on the harbor and the cobblestones of Thames Street. Such a nice place to sit with a cup of coffee and a pastry. The outdoor seating is ample, and even on cold or rainy days, one can admire the harbor through the large windows. The other reivewers are correct that the interior is quite "fort" (that's loud in French...pun intended. Anyone? Anyone?...) I found the food and service to be fine (just fine, as in fair) and will return.

Wonderful croissants--make sure you get them in the am to appreciate their freshness. Very nice staff and great ambiance. Nice European feel--we run into European transplants all the time. Kid friendly and love the views and drinks, too.

Several years later and I'm still a fan of Bonaparte's. When they're at their best I'd consider them a five-star bakery but because their quality can be inconsistent they are only getting four. It's a pricey place to have breakfast if you're sitting down, but since I'm lucky enough to live in the area I can get take out croissants on weekend mornings for a very reasonable price. The staff is quite friendly although it appears that Bonaparte's has been taken over by hipsters who are migrating down from Hampden.

I spent two weeks in Paris in the summer of 2011 and since returning I'm constantly in search of baked goods on par with what I had during that stay. Doubtless there are factors besides taste that make me yearn for Parisian breads and pastries, like that elusive vacation feeling, so I'm heartened whenever I discover a French bakery in the U.S. that is owned and operated by a French person. There are differences between butter, flour, and water in the U.S. vis a vis France, and I'm not sure where Bonaparte sources its ingredients, but the pain aux raisins that I ordered was by my memory as close to the ones I enjoyed in Paris as I've had since coming home. I only wish I could have had a pain au chocolate amandes, my other favorite treat. I love the decor inside with the giant clock, painted moldings, and framed prints of French military officers. I wish we could have lingered longer, but Bonaparte closes at 6:00 every day and probably for two or three weeks in August as well. That's how French it is! And besides I'm sure folks have been baking since the wee hours. I would love to come back on a warm afternoon and sit outside near the water in Fells Point and pretend I'm out an outdoor cafe in France. The sense memories offered up by Bonaparte were just that strong for me. And please, open a store in Washington!

Cute bakery with wonderful outside seating next to the water. If you get a seat outside, you can sit outside for hours and people watch. Most of the time though I like dropping by at night after about 9 pm. The back door on fells street is open and you can drop in and by fresh, piping out pastries straight from the oven! This is definitely the best time to get their pastries, rather than waiting for the morning when they've sat on the rack overnight. The white raisin roll is amazing! So is the chocolate almost croissant. It's so soft and buttery.

The croissants here are absolutely amazing! Make sure to try the chocolate almond! It's a cute, relaxing bakery with a great view of the water. Come for pastries or light lunch foods. Only 4 stars because service is a little slow, even when they're not busy.

I came here for New Year's Eve breakfast and I thought the pain au raisin was really good- nice and buttery with a sugary, crispy coating, but the croissants were not very good. The regular croissant and the chocolate croissant were both not very buttery and flakey, and the outside was not crispy as I normally like. Thus, the ham and cheese croissant was not very good. My husband said the coffee tasted burnt, and we got two cups of it. It's a cute place in Fell's with nice outdoor seating but the pastries could be better.

late at night, everything's closed, knocking on the back door, guy comes out asks what you want, he hands you an unmarked brown bag, you hand him cash. The best part is opening that bag up and checking inside for your sweet sweet goods.

Bonaparte Breads, with its incredible location at the Harbor front in Fells Point, is a tempting French patisserie in which I have eaten on numerous occasions and tried on so many times to like. Living a block from the spot, its proximity, charming interior, and nice patio area kept me coming back to a place that served mediocre quiches, so-so sandwiches, hit-or-miss desserts, and alright fruit tarts (my last resort, go-to staple). The best part of the experience are the drinks--try a coffee or cappuccino--and the fact that several of the staff are actually French (bonus points!). Oh, Bonaparte, why can't you be a bit better and Frenchier in terms of baked goods' quality!?!

Looking for a place to grab a late breakfast/early lunch, so went here one Saturday morning about 11 am. Lots of confusion behind the counter, no one seemed to be in charge, stood there a long time before getting waited on. I initially was handed a lunch menu, which looked good, but when I tried to order was told that 1. he wasn't sure if the lunch menu was available, they didn't have any bread at the time, and he thought the order may take 1/2 hour to get. I appreciated his candor, so we packed up and left. Not the first time I had poor service here, just glad in this occasion that I was warned in advance that my experience would be bad so I could leave.

Bonaparte is one of my favorite coffee/pastry shops in Baltimore. I just got back from Europe and this is the closest thing to that type of experience. The sandwiches are tasty and fresh (The Rivoli is my favorite), the coffee is delicious, and I have yet to have a bad pastry. My favorite is the fruit tarte or the almond croissante. They have a great lunch special where for $14 you get any drink on their menu, a small side salad, a full sandwich, and a pastry of your choice. The dining area is very comfortable with plush leather chairs. It isn't a cozy coffee shop atmosphere, but there are plenty of other places if that is your scene. It also has a nice view of the water with great outdoor seating. Also, if you go during the day, parking isn't bad in the free areas. My only criticism is sometimes their wifi is spotty, but if you tell them they are more than happy to reset the modem to get it working for you. Also, because it is an old building, it can be hard to find a power outlet for your laptop. However, overall, this is one of my favorite places to meet friends or to sit and work for a while.

Came here with friends for brunch and sat outdoors since we had a dog. +1 for dog friendly! The waitress even came out with some water for our dog. It's an order at the counter and be served place so there is no tip. The service is fast and friendly and the brunch selections are great. It seems like only a little bit of food, but the food goes a long way. I ordered salmon quiche brunch. The quiche was delicious and filling and I washed it down with fresh iced tea. The brunch special also comes with dessert which is maybe the best things about this place. The chocolate croissant and the napolean are both winners.

This place was fantastic! Located in the beautiful Fells Point section of Baltimore, it offers delicious pastries and breads, great coffee and espresso drinks, as well as great views of the harbor while you enjoy your snack. Huge windows and comfy chairs will have you losing track of time. Try the chocolate chip and vanilla custard pastry. It doesn't get much better than this.

I have always wanted to try this and with lots of time on my hands today, I decided to spend some leisurely time at one of the outdoor tables. I ordered the brie and walnut sandwich, deciding I would totally indulge (this has butter too!). Brie and walnuts are a combination I have seen many times before, and not just on sandwiches. Imagine my disappoint when, without communication, my sandwich arrived with pistachios. I really feel like my 8 dollars (I do like how they subtract from 10 dollar tag if you don't get chips or a salad) bought me a seat in the sunshine and the opportunity to use a bathroom. I feel like I would come again just because of the good location and spaciousness, but I would stick to a latte or coffee. The other thing that really rubbed me the wrong way was how long tables sat outside with all the dirty dishes of departed customers. I can handle looking at it, but I can't handle trash blowing everywhere. The amount of trash that blew from Bonaparte's semi-enclosed area and towards the street & water was disgraceful. For as not busy as they were, with a little ambition, they can do better. Help Baltimore out or else it will just always be Baltimore with the not so great reputation it unfortunately has. Clean streets go a long way, and this part of Fells Point receives a lot of foot traffic.

I can only comment on the coffee, which came out wicked hot and tasty. The men's bathroom was clean, but MAJOR TIP, only use the deadbolt, NOT the handle lock. Lots of neat Napoleon prints around the place. Loved the vibe.

I've never ever heard of a place where you can buy hot, fresh out of the oven pastries after the bakery closes. When a friend told me at 10 pm one night that he was craving a chocolate croissant, I just rolled my eyes at him and told him to wait until the morning. He told me to get up and get in the car---so off we went to Bonaparte. And I think I arrived to heaven. We knocked on the back door which was promptly opened by one of the pastry chefs. We stepped into the most wonderful pastry smell and we each got a chocolate croissant--yep, I was in heaven. Best croissants I've had outside of France. But my favorite pastry they have is the almond croissant-what a delicious almond filling they've managed to perfect. Oh, and the pastries are cheaper if you get them at night :)

The view is nice, and the decor is kitschy, and the service is fine. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre (my quiche was all right, but my dining partner's Croque Monsieur was basically two pieces of bread with a tiny bit of ham inside that cost $9), and the coffee is quite terrible. I'm not sure what is wrong, exactly, with the coffee, but it is acidic and just...wrong. The creamer was also odd-looking, as if it was half mixed with water.

If I could eat here everyday without the consequence of becoming morbidly obese, I would do it. Actually, even if I became morbidly obese by eating here everyday, I wouldn't care. I be happy and fat. The best coffee that I have ever had is here. It's perfect - never burned and punch-you-in-the-face strong. I love it. Sometimes, I go just for the coffee (but always leave with a pastry too). Best coffee in Baltimore. There, I said it. I always go for their lunch special. Quiche, hot sandwich, or cold sandwich with a side salad and chips, choice of one pastry, and a beverage with one refill. $12.60. Awesome. I've tried each quiche (spinach, mushroom, salmon, sundried tomato, or ham) and they all rock. I've only had one hot sandwich (since I love the quiche so) - the brie sandwich, which is awesome. And the pastries. Ineffable. They must be experienced. I haven't met a fruit tart that I haven't loved. The tropezienne is amazing and the flan is perfect. There is always something new. Each pastry is like a little culinary adventure. The breads are amazing too. Freshly baked and delicious. You cannot go wrong. Inside can be a bit crowded at times, but worth the wait should the limited seating be full. In nicer weather, seating is available outside. Service is always excellent. I love sitting near the fireplace or under, what I call, the "death clock." There is a huge clock hanging precariously from the wall opposite the counter. It seems to be supported by only a wire. Don't worry, I'm sure it's quite secure. It's just huge!

Pastries, breads, and desserts, oh my! I usually come here at least once a week (I walk there, so it's not completely terrible for me). Occasionally the quality of croissants is inconsistent, but most of the time they are delicious and flaky. The people who work behind the counter are very friendly. And, you can buy pastries out of the back after hours, so they're pretty much open around the clock.

The setting alone makes this a favorite. A small, private feeling wharf cobbled and bricked, patio that looks out over it all, and decor that would never belong in a Cosi or Panera combine to create something elegant and right. Try this: Walk in. Avoid popping open your laptop for just a minute. Order espresso or tea, smell their delicious fresh bread (which the owner will occasionally gift you if you're still there at close), open a book and look out over the Inner Harbor. You'll feel romantic. I dare you to not. Then give in to your tech cravings and make good use of the free wifi. Disclaimer: I've never tried their pastries. However, all things I have tried are fabulous.

I like this locations more than the one at Savage Mill. This has a nicer ambiance and I think has more items (i could be wrong on this). The employee at the counter was very nice and knowledgeable about the pastries. They have an awesome almond chocolate croissant that I highly recommend. I have not tried many other items there yet, but the next time I'm back in fell's point I will definitely drop by to test out some of their other pastries.

Bonaparte's is like that person you know that tries too hard and makes themselves look kind of dumb in the process. It's rather tucked away on a side street in Fell's Point; the location is really fantastic, with a great view of the water and plenty of outdoor seating to take advantage of. The kid's Pirate adventure ship is usually parked in front of the place too, which usually obstructs the view of the bay but is amusing nonetheless. The interior is ridiculous looking, to say the least, and not in a good way. If you can imagine what Disney Epcot-esque "French" looks like, this place is a spitting image of it; obnoxious metallic gold trim with golden yellow walls, pictures of Napoleon everywhere...yeah. This place also features, by far, the worst coffee i've ever had, bakery or no. The coffee here was painfully acidic (literally). It was an additional kick in the gut that they charge almost 3 bucks for a cup of it (3 bucks for a small cup of drip coffee, really...?). As far as the food and pastries are concerned, the almond croissant (as a previous reviewer mentioned) is indeed very good. All of the other baked goods, however, range from mediocre to bad. The plain croissant is okay, but vastly overpriced for the quality you get. The chocolate croissant sad at best, with the equivalent of five chocolate chips worth of filling inside. It's kind of depressing that the frozen croissants from Trader Joe's are better than the majority of the offerings at Bonaparte's. The service is a little inattentive, as well. It gets two stars because of the good location and the almond croissant. Otherwise i'd say pass, and definitely stay away from the coffee.

I went to this cafe a few times during the last month. Their service and food was mediocre. Their hot chocolate is OK but it's cold when it's served. Their lattes are good and foamy. Their white bread is below average and doesn't have good texture. But my worst experience was when I ordered a drink and a pastry and was greeted by extremely offensive and rude behavior. The place was a bit crowded. I went to sit outside and when the waitress brought my drink, the pastry was missing. I mentioned I had also ordered a pastry, but the waitress said she had already given it to me in a bag, which she had not. She kept insisting that I had already received it and was implying that I had somehow stolen the pastry!!! How rude and offensive can that be!?? She went inside to check and came back saying the same thing again! She offered no apology and said I could order another pastry. At that point I asked for a refund. I went inside, and after I signed my return receipt I was offered no apologies, after which I left. This unprofessional behavior is very disappointing, and I won't be going to this place again.

Fell's Point meets France - delectable choices for breakfast, brunch, or a take-out desert, all in a nice spot to see the inner city of Baltimore. This is the best bread in the city and a lovely place for Sunday brunch. It's a working bakery, and the restaurant is almost an afterthought. Come early and avoid the lines. Bring back a cake or tart when you leave!

Truly a dieters worst nightmare, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Every pastry is perfect and utterly beautiful . Each croissant is buttery and flakey and oh-my-god-can-i-please-have-five-more delicious. The coffee/lattes, etc are all really good, too, and their bread loaves are a great buy and freeze/toast well. Oh! And on the weekends they have ham and cheese croissants that blow your mind. But, wait, so do the almond ones..

Absolutely wonderful bread and croissants! I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers, as I found the staff incredibly warm and friendly. Maybe I caught them on a good day? Or maybe it was because I walked in dressed like a hipster? And definitely get a croissant to go, your tummy will thank you later!

Another gem in the B'more Fells Point. Great locale right by the water in to enjoy a cup of coffee and a dessert pastry on the outdoor seating. Small selection of breads, especially if you arrive later in the afternoon like I did. Looks like they offer a decent selection of breads in addition to a wide selection of lunch sandwiches. I remember their tarts and croissants being delicious - come here to try those. If you don't want to wait to visit a farmer's market to try their creations, come here to get some baked good delights!

This place is expensive for what you're getting. The quality of the pastries is poor. People eat with their eyes before anything else. That being said, their cake desserts looked old and unappetizing. I did not try their breakfast pastries (croissant, Danish, etc) or bread though. So I will have to give that a try someday. I got a Nelson and my bf got the croque monsieur, both hot sandwiches. My sandwich was ok. Nothing to write home about, especially since I could have made it myself. As a matter of fact, if you have a panini press, anyone could have made any of these sandwiches themselves. But the real disappointment was the croque Monsieur. You would think since this place carries itself like a French eatery and bakes their own croissants, it would on a croissant. No-sirree. It was on white bread. If there was an option to put it on a croissant, I definitely was not aware of this and the server could have upsold his order. The decor was really cheesy to me, but it's exactly what the typical Fells Point tourist would love. As a previous reviewer said, if Disney decorated this restaurant, this is what it would look like: Disney Epcot-esque "French". This place tries too hard to compensate for their lack of quality. The service was quick and attentive tho. The location and view is wonderful. But I'm afraid that's the only good thing I have to say about Bonaparte.
