Great experience. Went there based off other reviews. Food was tasty, drinks were good, and even though the place is small it was comfortable and staff was helpful. Would consider returning for sure.

We have only been once but would definitely go back. The bartenders were super friendly, the food was great, and the drinks were very interesting and good. If I worked at UA I would come here all the time. Better for smaller groups, there is one big table but I would imagine it is typically being used.

FAN-TASTIC!! Started with the Bloody Mule, and shared the white bean hummus, Brussel sprouts, crispy octopus, cheese board, & Korean fried chicken wings. (they were out of Pork Belly that night) More than enough food for the two of us. Everything was sensational except for the crispy octopus, which seemed a bit off. Highly recommend this spot, but keep in mind that it is minuscule, with maybe 5-6 two-top tables, one eight-top and maybe 10 bar seats? And no reservations. But well worth it if you can snag a spot!!

One of the better micro-restaurants that have been popping up in B'more. Solid eight taps worth of good beer, a nice American whiskey selection, small-batch gins too. Seating comes primarily in two-person booths alongside the windows facing Marriott St. and the noise level is pretty subdued, so this would be a good date location. If you have a larger party, you need to call ahead to reserve the one (1) larger table. Small plates and moderately-sized sandwiches and dishes make up the menu. The modest, open kitchen is competently manned and the food's fresh. We had some good cheese, tasty ceviche, grilled octopus, drinks, and the peanut butter banana tart. All of it nicely put together, seasoned, and presented. Cocktail recommendations from the bar were right on the nose, as well. Next time, we go back and see how much damage we can do to the cocktail/drinks menu. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm a huge fan of Salt, so was very excited to check this place out. Overall ambiance is five stars-small (tiny), rowhouse turned into restaurant, on a quiet street. Drinks were a bit disappointing-mojito was bland and tasted like watered down juice. Food was delicious and really like that there are sandwiches. Wish there were fries though-they don't have to be duck fat fried like at Salt, but some kind of fried, salty goodness would have been great. I'll definitely be back to check out other items. One time dining certainly doesn't mean they can't still be awesome!

We were on our way through and got hungry. Saw good reviews on yelp and we decided the slight trek away from the highway was worth it. We were not disappointed. Great tapas, and a great cocktail list. Can't speak for the entire menu, but the ceviche was incredible and my wife absolutely loved the boar ribs. Would gladly come back if we are ever in the area.

We walked on this lovely temperate evening to this spot after bypassing the seemingly endless lines to enter the the season opener of The Gathering (food truck amalgam), and we were too hungry to wait. We Yelped the area and found 1157 Bar & Kitchen tucked into some side streets of Locust Point. It's very cozy, only a handful of two tops and perhaps one table to accommodate a larger party...plus a ten person bar area. We were really pleased to find Ommegang on draft here, so that was a win. But the real winners were the sandwiches we chose: ratatouille/burratta on light rosemary foccacia and a braised short rib that were both absolutely filling for a warm spring night, paired with a good beer. Afterwards, a short walk down to the waters edge at Tide Point, and it was a great Friday night date. We'll be back, for sure.

Not worth going out of the way for. The food was average at best. The cocktail I had, the Black Manhattan, was not well made. Salt is much better then Ambrose's second micro restaurant concept.

A small place that does a few things extremely well. As other reviews have stated, this place is so small that there's really only 1 table. All other seating is for 2 people at most, so it's the perfect place for date night or to grab a drink with a friend. Bring someone adventurous, as you'll want to try pretty much everything! I recommend the hummus if you want to stick to something "safe", and the buffalo sweetbreads if you feel like trying something different. As many newspapers have reviewed, the chorizo sandwich and the Korean wings are also very popular and delicious. I haven't tried either of the entrees yet as they are on the expensive side, but they look amazing. You can't really go wrong with any of their drinks, and the bartenders are so friendly and helpful.

It was amazing! The mussels were really big and great flavor! We also got the wings which were recommended on here and they were also great! I had wine and they kept my glass full

Stopped by a few days after they opened. Very solid first impression. Both bartenders/servers there that day introduced themselves and were really friendly. First of all, a warning. The place looks absolutely great inside but it is very small. If you're planning on coming with a group of 3+, you basically have two options: the one table that's large enough for more than 2 people, or the bar. Other than that it's all 2-person mini-booths. There's a good selection of beer and wine, and a seemingly good selection of bourbon, etc. (though that isn't my thing so I know nothing about it). The prices for the beer aren't bad at all (I paid $4 for a Resurrection). The food is mostly small plates but there are a few (2) entrees. We tried three of the plates recommended by the staff: the Korean wings, the beef tartare, and the maple pork belly. The tartare was great. My girlfriend loved the wings. I didn't, because they were a bit too sweet for me, but that's more of a personal preference I think - I'm not a big fan of barbeque wings in general, I always go with a less sweet variety. They were definitely crispy and cooked correctly. The pork belly was delicious, and the lentils it came with were awesome too. I just wished the serving size of the pork itself was a little bigger. Also, the guy next to us got the hummus and it looks ridiculously awesome. Will definitely try that one next time. All in all, very good first impression. Definitely a good place to go get some drinks and a little food to go with it. Will be back soon for sure.

Overall: small, modern space. All of the specialty cocktails are to die for and the food is outrageously good. Try to save room for dessert. My husband and I stopped by randomly this past Sunday evening. The place is small, but chic and cozy. There's one long bar, a few booths for 2 people and one large table for big groups. The space and menu are more modern American, but the classic rock music playing in the background was a nice nod to the LoPo neighborhood. Cocktails: they have 4 specialty cocktails. We tried one of each and they were all INCREDIBLE. You can't go wrong. Food: like the space, the menu is also small with a few small plates, a few sandwich options, a few entree options and a few dessert options. Opting for sandwiches, I got the ratatouille sandwich with burrata cheese (which is similar to fresh mozz, but better). My husband got the short rib sandwich, which was similar to a roast beef au jus. Both were outstanding. My sandwich came on the BEST tasting foccacia bread; it was crusty, yet light and airy with the perfect amount of herbaciousness. And that burrata was super creamy and the star of the sandwich. My husband's sandwich was equally good, packed with perfectly seasoned short rib meat, accompanied by sharp cheddar cheese and pickled onion that cut through the richness. Dessert: we NEVER get dessert, but given the quality of our meal - we HAD to. We split this banana/peanut butter/chocolate/caramel torte. It was the perfect balance of richness, sweetness and saltiness. Bottom line: New favorite Bmore gem.

We tried this place out with a large group (8) on an early Saturday evening, which was a stretch for this cozy restaurant to handle. 1157 is a great, unique addition to the LoPo community. The bartender, Brent, greeted us and learned all our names by the second round, which was a really nice touch. I had the black Manhattan cocktail - a nice rich take on the classic Manhattan, but a little stiff for my taste. A couple of us got the bloody mule, which was really very good. They also have a good selection of whiskeys chalked on the wall. The appetizers were similarly excellent: we had a cheese board and white bean hummus (both were sized for 2-4). The presentation was very Pinterest- everything served on wooden slabs rather than plates. The vegetarian selection is limited, with about 3-4 small plates and 2 sandwiches (both quite cheesy). My wife said the chicken wings were 5 star, but the sweet breads and beef tartar were too rich for her tastes. The size makes for a great small neighborhood atmosphere, but makes it difficult to find a table for 2 at peak times (the restaurant can hold about 30).

This place is as excellent as advertised. Just about my favorite new restaurant in Baltimore. It is tiny but people move in and out relatively quickly. The curry Brussel sprouts and the Korean chicken are to die for. The drinks are also excellent. I can't wait to go back.

Phenomenal staff brings out dish after dish of perfectly prepared creative food. The cheese plate is the best in town, very affordable and plenty to go around. I didn't think I liked pork belly but I do now. It was served over barbecue lentils and melted deliciousness into my mouth. Seafood bisque was so rich and wonderful I wanted to lick the bowl clean. Somehow it wasn't too heavy while still being rich. Great beer selection, great spirits, craft cocktails, this place has it all. My wife is veggie/pescetarian and she loved it as well. It's small and intimate so it might not be best for your kickball league, but it would be great with a date or a couple of friends. I can't wait to go back.

We were happy. We two ladies, we ordered 3 small plates, a sandwich, and a dessert to share. We were stuffed, probably could have done with one less item (though of course not dessert). We had the short rib sandwich which was wonderfully crunchy on the exterior. The tuna crudo was great. We tried 3 total cocktails between us (the gin one (Pine Tar? Not sure), the Wailer, and the Bloody Mule. All were good.

This place is small, but very intimate and great for a date. I enjoyed the small plates like the pork belly. Very unique menu.

Second visit. Went for an early Valentine's dinner and 1157 did not disappoint. Grabbed a booth back by the kitchen. Enjoyed a delicious orange vodka cocktail a la Brian. I had the delicious seafood bisque full of scallops, clams and mussels. My Valentine had the winter salad - kale, faro, goat cheese, dried cherries, candied walnuts and golden beets. Scrumptious. We both had the filet entree served with a blue cheese potato gratin and broccoli rabe. Yum. All in all a delicious meal made with top notch ingredients in a great space filled with friendly people. If you're looking for a delicious meal above and beyond the regular bar fare then this is the place. Can't wait to go back and maybe save some room for desserts.

I'll put right out there that I am a fan for sure, but I think there are a few things that make me think that 4 stars may be a bit generous. Jen and I stopped in the night of our visit just before a torrential downpour engulfed South Baltimore. 1157 is located in a converted rowhome in the neighborhood of Locust Point. The place is tiny, definitely not a place I'd really consider for a party of more than 2. There was a small communal table where maybe 10 people could sit. That's the only table where more than 2 people can eat together. The bar is sleek with a large selection of libations. There is an open kitchen which I have mixed feelings about depending on the setting, but for this place it definitely works. The lighting is subdued and the setting is intimate. Service was somewhat spotty on our visit. Not sure why, the place was maybe 3/4's full and most of those people had already eaten so this was probably my biggest complaint. It took at least 10 minutes to order a drink and probably another 10 to have it made and delivered. Not a huge deal if things picked up, but they didn't. We had a couple of questions regarding the menu, and our waiter seemed to not really know or didn't show any passion or knowledge of the food he selling. Strange, but not overly disconcerting until we sat through another long drought of neglect. Now to be there, you would understand how hard it is to feel and be neglected at the place, it truly is that small. Somehow we were though. The drinks were outstanding so that was a plus. The menu was completely enticing. I don't think there was anything aside from the sweetbreads that I wouldn't order (I'm just not an organ meat type of guy). So we ordered two apps and two sandwiches with mixed though mostly positive results. I'll start with the negative. I thought the octopus was overcooked, dry and a little paltry something I'd expect more from a tasting menu not as an app. The wings were outstanding. Smoky and sweet with a hint of spice, I could eat these wings all day long. Jen ordered the porchetta sandwhich and I ordered the short rib melt. We basically gave each other a half of our sandwich and both loved every bite. The porchetta tasted like pulled pork wrapped in crispy pork belly bacon. The short rib melt was more like a French dip with tender morsels of slow roasted short rib in a crunch ciabatta encrusted bread that softened perfectly when dipped in the accompanying au jus. I wish they offered fries on the side, but that doesn't seem to be on the menu. I couldn't decide which sandwich was better and found myself alternating bites until both were gone. They seemed to really only offer one thing for desert so we both passed. I believe the bill came to around $100. We had a couple of cocktails but could have gone for a bottle of wine. I don't believe they offer bottles which is just as surprising as not offering fries. Ambiance: **** (despite being small, I find it intimate and hip-they made the most of the space) Service: ** (our main waiter dropped the ball but others picked up the slack so I can't say it was horrible, just not the same standard as say Salt) Food: **** (more hits than misses, the wings are a must order from now on for us and we look forward to trying other sandwiches hoping they can hold a candle to the two we had) Value: *** (pricey but not outrageous) Conclusion: the place is new so I expect a few hiccups. I think the service was one of those hiccups and I will chalk it up to that. 3 out of 4 dishes were excellent with only 1 being subpar. I think the desert menu would benefit from an expansion and for God sake please import the duck fat fries from Salt...seriously, like today, actually drive over there and grab a bunch for dinner tonight. We will be back for sure, hopefully eating duck fat fries with my meal next time.

Small plates we had were awesome I could eat the Korean style wings as a meal. The calamari was really good too. The duck confit sandwich was really good and a good deal. They were out of troegs at the bar so that was a bummer. The place is super small like a standard row house 1st floor literally. Good stuff, will be back

Love 1157! It's a small place...so don't expect to get a seat too easily on a weekend! But definitely worth the wait! They don't take reservations. We have been there twice now in less than a week! We love the curried brussels sprouts! The Bloody Mule was great too! The Korean Fried Wings, Grilled Cheese and Mortadella sandwich, and the wild boar ragout pasta were delicious! We enjoyed the winter salad as well. Stay away from the Adult Milk Shake though if you don't like the alcohol overpowering your choc milkshake. The mezcal is super strong in it --the first time ever that I said no to a chocolate milkshake! Will definitely be back soon...just not for the milkshake though!

Yes, it's small. But well done (a complete transformation of the old dive bar Down the Hatch. No small achievement.). Chef ex of Salt. Much nicer than Salt. Great cocktails. Decent beer list. Decent wine list. Great small plates (though I hope, as I do with all restaurants, that the menu does not stay static). Attentive staff. An intimate place for a great date. A wonderful and needed addition to SoBo Locust Point.

We went here for my birthday last night... With our 10-month old son. Not a great place for kids, but I didn't want to be away from the babe on my bday! Luckily, the restaurant was super accommodating of us, and we will happily return sans baby. Great food and great prices. Fantastic beer selection.

My husband and I went here when they were newish (I guess they still are). Great little hideaway place! We tried so many different things on the menu and nothing disappointed us. We tried octopus, sweet breads, wings, cheese board, pork belly, and some other stuff I can't remember. We also had some type of dessert as well. All good flavors, great service!

Food was unbelievable...hummus board was delicious and the wild boar ribs were to die for but my absolute favorite was the cheese board. Never tasted flavor a that married so well together. I am a beer drinker and so was hubby. Loved our beers and great selection. He had the wings and said they tasted just like when he was in Korea. 5 stars easily. Service was top notch. Bartenders were awesome

This is a must do! Everything was amazing. The drinks, the appetizers and sandwiches. We had the chorizo sandwich, and there are no words!! So great. The service is very chill but the guys there are super helpful.

Left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I live in the neighborhood and was very excited about the opening of this restaurant. I had e-mailed the owner ahead to find out when it would be open and have taken friends to eat there twice. I ordered the grilled cheese which, to my surprise, tasted like potent wasabi. I attributed the unexpected and overpowering flavor to the wholegrain mustard, which I cannot eat. I apologized and asked for another without mustard. Our server told me that I would be charged for two grilled cheeses in that case. As a result, I sent back my uneaten grilled cheese, for which I was charged, and will not return.

Really cool place! Food was delicious, atmosphere was awesome, etc. The only complaint I have is the huge service quality discrepancy between the 2 bartenders. One bartender was awesome...constantly moving around the bar, giving us extra napkins when he noticed that we had ordered the wings from the other bartender, making funny small talk, and overall just on point. Unfortunately, the other bartender was pretty useless. He didn't even know how to craft a cocktail based on a specific liquor! (We were celebrating and asked him to make a cocktail with champagne. He told us that he had never created a drink from scratch before.) Um, what? For a place that touts its specialty drinks, we were sorely disappointed. I've had more skilled bartenders at dive bars. Thankfully, the food and the awesome bartender made it so that I will be a return customer.

This place is a hidden gem! I live 2 blocks away from this place and have never noticed it but saw it pop up on Yelp one day and decided to try it. The atmosphere reminds me of an intimate NYC bar, the cocktails are very unique and artfully crafted, and the food was incredible! We had the white bean hummus which was nothing like I've had before with olives, roasted peppers and was spread out on a wood block. The reviews kept mentioning the chicken wings and we really enjoyed them. I tried the scallops and breaded truffle risotto bites which was incredible but I didn't figure out until the end of my meal that the meal is meant to be eaten with a little bit of scallop and risotto in the same bite, which made an incredible dynamic taste! We stayed for a couple of hours and the owner(?) came over and offered to buy us another drink. Great service and intimate dining experience, I wish I could give this place more stars!

One of my favorite places in town - the food is well thought out and beautifully served. Drinks are creative and tasty. Vegetarian options are deeply part of the menu, not just an afterthought. The place is small and intimate, with several small booth tables for 2, a common table for up to 8, and a busy bar. So if your party is more than 2, plan accordingly or be willing to be flexible. I've found that to be part of the fun. By the way, my favorite dish is the crispy octopus. The Korean wings are a close second. Enjoy!

  • Supriya M.

This place was fantastic - cozy, casual and small yet great food and service. It was not crowded on a Sunday evening and we loved the 2 person booths. Ordered 4 small plates - brussels sprouts, oyster salad, ribs and ceviche and each was was unique, fresh and delicious. Also, these small plates are by no means, small. They are decent sized - the ribs were almost entree sized. We also got the Pork bahn mi which was delicious. We ended the night with a chocolate peanut butter pie. I'd say I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because I didn't really like the dessert but my husband would beg to differ - so really this place is up there 4.5 stars... I just didn't think it was innovative enough and the chocolate to peanut butter ratio was not ideal to me. The service was fantastic - fast, yet well paced. I would highly recommend a visit to this gem.

More like 3-3.5 (within that range). Anyhow, i had bookmarked this place to try for quite sometime. So on a Wednesday, i went across town to Locust Point where this place is located. It is right around the corner from Under Armour. The place is tiny, that's for sure, so an off peak time if you dont want to wait is prudent. The restaurant was empty on my visit except a few patrons.. What was ordered: By way of a drink , i had the watermelon mojito, it was decent nothing special. Korean BBQ wings- very good, not Pabu good, but very good, i chomped it down. What caught my attention more so, was the pickled slaw that came with this dish the thing was delicious. So delicious that i ordered some to go and i think that was the highlight of my meal. Rock shrimp po boy- This was the biggest disappointment in my meal, one it was not big enough and two this wasnt a poboy. This is with a caveat that i go to Toololou quite often, no slaw and a split top bun meant for lobster rolls. I will avoid this one if you know your po-boys, I will go there again and try some other items on their menu.

This was an intense dining weekend for my husband and me, which included trying a Michelin star restaurant in NYC, but believe it or not my favorite gastronomic experience was at this unassuming neighborhood bar. At the end of the day, I just want a place where I can relax and not worry about whether I have to move from the inside or outside when using my utensils or where to place my knife when not in use. 1157 Bar and Kitchen is the opposite of some of the stuffier places I've dined at more recently. It's an industrial, compact bar located in a rowhouse. You can dine either at the bar or in one of the tall booths (love this seating option). Casualness aside, the biggest draw of 1157 for me is its solid menu items. The menu is a one-pager, short and sweet. Everything we ordered from that concise menu was delicious and exciting! We got: Curried Brussel sprouts Grilled octopus over a chickpea salad Korean fried chicken wings (for him) Grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with wild mushrooms and accented with Dijon mustard I couldn't get enough of the curried Brussel sprouts. The roasted veggies are placed on a plate lined with a Velveeta cheese color sauce, which at first looks pretty suspect. This bright yellow sauce is addictive, incredible. I wish I could have licked the sauce off the plate. That's how good it is. The sweetness from the roasted Brussel sprouts combined with the sweet and salty aspect of the curry sauce was so delightful. The octopus was grilled perfectly and very well-seasoned. Probably one of the best grilled octopus dishes I've had anywhere. I love Range in Chevy Chase, but their octopus is one item that failed to make as much of an impression. In contrast, 1157's rendition is remarkable. The bright and fresh chickpea salad that it was served on top of was awesome. I loved the hits of citrus and the use of assorted veggies for color and interest. Chickpeas by themselves are a protein powerhouse, but they're also terribly plain Jane so this was the lift this salad needed. Tom N. said the Korean fried chicken wings were tasty, though not as crispy as Bon Chon's and other popular Korean fried chicken chains' versions. The slaw served on the side was "perfect," very reminiscent of the pickled veggies that come with banh mi (pork belly banh mi with bacon pate is a menu item, in case you're wondering). Our last dish that we shared, the grilled cheese sandwich, was also commendable. The flatbread was toasted well and sturdy enough to hold up to the filling of assorted cheeses, mushrooms, and mustard. And the accompanying quinoa salad was refreshing and a nice balance to the rich, gooey all-American sandwich. 1157 has superb food, excellent lineup of beers on tap and in bottle form, and great service. This is a destination dining and drinking spot. I'd make the 1.5 hour drive to Baltimore just to chill out here.

1157 is pretty awesome. They offer a variety of fusion tapas, sandwiches, and entrees. I was very pleased with the tapas as they are actually quite large. The white bean hummus and Korean chicken wings were probably the winners from our selections. The mule was delicious. Seating is limited, but the space is nice and the service is on point.

As the Baltimore Sun suggested, I am going to shout about the charms of 1157; it does deserves the attention. This place is modest, maybe tiny or small is a better word. There is one large table - communal style - but good for groups and a couple of two person booths and maybe 12 bar seat. I like it this way... I quickly chatted up the bartender and my Friday took a delightful turn. I started with a cocktail - a Kir Royal - to be exact. Let's face it, I am a sucker for anything with sparkling wine and fruit. Creme de cassis, with sparkling wine and a few black berries; too sweet for me to have more than one, so I quickly switched to the vinho verde. The drink list is not extensive, but I can't imagine not finding something that you like. Plus, the bartenders seem to have a handle on your classics, so just ask if you want something you don't see. Food wise - the small plates are not as small as you think. Once again, a limited menu, but I still had a hard time deciding - well maybe not, by eye drew me immediately to the octopus and my friend picked the ceviche. The Fluke Ceviche had a little spice with the red peppers and lime and orange juices. The cucumber and avocado really balanced out the dish. Huge chunks of the tender but medium textured fish. This was exactly what this warm spring day called for. I was a big fan of the flavor, but didn't like that it was so saucy. Be sure to scoop out all the fish, I'm not sure what to do with all the rest. I think i am getting tired of describing octopus dishes. Still won't stop me from ordering them. This was one was completely different than all others. Huge pieces of meaty octopus griled with a crispy, almost caramelized char on the outside and a tender warm melty inside. The chick pea salad was a delightful accompaniment adding texture and depth to the octopus. Crispy chick peas with summer veggies like red onion, carrot, and cucumber. Same for the orange Mojo; the sauce adding just the right amount acid to the dish. I think I did lick this plate - don't tell. :-) A few more friends arrived later, and we shared the cheese plate. Formidable cheese plate. Three large chunks of fine cheese, a soft blue/gorganzola type, and creamy soft cheese and a manchego. They served it with crispy crostini, granny smith apples, a small grape cluster and some crunchy candied walnuts. Simple, not as extensive as some, but filling. I can't wait to come back to this place. I hope my friends who live around the corner visit often. I live a little far, and its kind of tucked away behind the under armor building, so I don't know how often I will be there, but this will surely be one of my favorite spots in locust point and SoBo.

We got the Korean wings which were awesome. Really big/juicy and the sauce was on point. The pickled veggies that came with were really great too. We also got the hummus with roasted olives/peppers and the brussel sprouts was good and had a nice fig sauce underneath which brought the dish together- it was all pretty great and tasted fresh/homemade. Service was quick and the drinks were good too. Great new spot.
