Jack’s Fortune Restaurant Menu

A one star review seems a little harsh. And usually I would reserve it for a restaurant that was dirty or completely mistreats their customers. But Jack's Fortune was one of those rare circumstances when I knew after my first to-go order that I would never return again, despite its close proximity, some puffed up reviews on Yelp, and (if their wall is to be believed) 'best in Annapolis' accolades. We all know that Annapolis doesn't serve good Chinese food, Americanized or otherwise. But the sesame chicken and Buddhist delight (veggies) were completely unappetizing. The chicken itself was in a terrible state, with all 4 or 5 giant pieces melded together in some sort of half fried, half drowned sculpture in what must have been a 2 liter bottle of 'sauce.' The carton was generously topped off with about 1.2 million raw sesame seeds floating in that unpleasant great lake of unspecified flavor sauce lake. I'm not even sure I tasted sesame, or really much of anything discernible in this dish. The veggies looked much better, but also came in their own seemingly unflavored sauce concoction that apparently is so good, they think you need enough that you can strain it later and make your very own extra large bottle of unflavored brownish-red sauce. The broccoli were in a terrible state (I assume very low priced, frozen broccoli,) the snow peas were okay, and the string beans were probably the best part of the whole meal - but not enough to make me come back for a full order of competently cooked string beans... To top it all off, our carton leaked half of its Big Gulp volume of sauce, but luckily Mr. Plastic Bag managed to contain the mess (and there was STILL a ton of sauce left in the carton.) The brown rice was different, but I would have preferred white. Didn't even bother to refrigerate the leftovers, definitely not going to want to even look on these goods ever again. Silver lining: we managed to get 2 fairly apropos fortunes from our cookies, so that's something!

Ordered egg foo young, pepper steak, Singapore noodles, Kung pow chicken, Lo mein and egg rolls. A ton of food- I was craving Chinese and reviews were half decent. Everything was bland- lacked flavor. I even had to add salt. Proportions are large but expensive for the lack of taste. Not only is it not authentic. It's also just plain bad. I'm from NY originally, and moved her from San Diego so I've had all types of Chinese. I won't be back to jacks

This lovely little family owned restaurant has the best Chinese food in Annapolis-period. They blow PF Changs out of the water. Their sauces are so superior they are not even in the same league... I have read the reviews that talk about too much bland sauce. Here's the skinny: Jack's is run by an amazing family that is totally committed to awesome food done YOUR way. If you don't like a lot of sauce, just tell them. If you like your food spicy, tell them. If you want something authentic that is not on the menu, tell them. They will accommodate you in any way they possibly can and you will be surprised with what they can do... And as to the vegetables being frozen, there is just no way....I can not abide frozen vegetables and I can spot fresh broccoli any time--their's is the real thing and they give you so much it is enough for 3 meals. And I go there so often I have seen them on many a morning sorting fresh vegetables on the tables. There have also been some negative reviewers say that this is a place just for old people. Let me just say( as an old person) that good food does not have an age group--or at least it shouldn't. Yes, they are situated near 3 retirement homes and do have quite a large clientele from those places, but young people would be wise to see what all of the popularity is about. And as for my (old) sensibilities, I would far rather have my meals in the relaxing soft sounds of their classical CDs than to the pumping, loud, obnoxious music played at so many of the restaurants trying to appeal to the younger crowd. They are awesome--check them out...

Jack's probably deserves a 3.5 star rating, but I figured I would round up. This is my go to Chinese stop in Annapolis. The Pros: Some people may say that it isn't authentic, but it is the best Chinese food you are going to find in Annapolis. I normally don't stray far from my comfort zone when it comes to Chinese food. I order a lot of the standards..... lo mein, General Tso's Chicken, Szechuan Chicken, any of their Pork Dishes, and have also tried their Peking Duck. Everything is always delicious in my opinion. The Cons: Jack's does not deliver and Jack's is also one of the more expensive Chinese restaurants I have frequented.

I went to Jack's for dinner the night after Thanksgiving. It was absolutely packed, but our food came quickly and our waiters kept our water glasses and tea cups full. Plus, all the food was excellent, especially the eggplant in garlic sauce. I would go back often if I lived anywhere near Annapolis!

went here on a whim on the way home from work. I was hungry and it was close by. Veggie fried rice was calling. Went in and got take out, I did not wait long and the prices were ok. I got an asparagus crab meat soup and veggie fried rice. They threw in the crunch fried things, fortune cookies and some soy sauce. I forgot to ask for chop sticks. Oh well. I got home and enjoyed my meal for the next couple of days, for 14 dollars I got about three meals, not that I am a big eater though. Food was good, hey it's Chinese and it wasn't bad.... it was tasty and it hit the spot. The lobby and restaurant itself seemed cozy and comfortable. Bamboo lined walls and friendly service. It's in the Giant shopping center.

This is one of my favorite places to eat. When I first moved here I was told it was a local's place and since I was going to be a local, I tried it. I now go there a couple of times each month and usually order the same thing... egg roll and sesame chicken with fried rice. I have taken almost my entire family there and everyone has enjoyed the food, and the service has always been great. I have not tried the take-out, but I have heard it is not as good as dine-in. I do think the prices are a bit on the high side, but I still enjoy it. The veggie carved flowers and animals are pretty and something my family got a kick out of but I would rather have a lower price on the food than a swan carved out of a turnip...

The restaurant is in a decent location, and the staff seems very friendly, but that wasn't enough to save my experience. This was the second worst Chinese food I've ever had (second only to the Golden Dragon, also in Annapolis). As pointed out by another review, this may very well be the "Best Chinese in Annapolis" but that still isn't saying a whole lot. It took ever fiber of my being to eat the Sesame Chicken takeout that I ordered. I only made it through the meal only out of sheer determination, because at around $16 (tax included) for the meal, I just couldn't see wasting that much money and not eating it. The chicken contained no white meat and was a soggy mess, sitting in a "sauce" that more closely resembled brown, flavorless water than anything else --the "sauce" was not the least bit thickened. The rice even tasted like a bad minute rice. I guess when you barely have any competition, you don't really have to hold yourself to any high standards. Save your money. Eat at Panda Express. Even if you hate Panda Express, eat there anyway just to avoid this place. At least that way you won't regret having spent so much money on the meal.

Many local old-timers love this place, as did I for many years. Of late the food has been just ho-hum, but convenience kept us occasionally coming back. So we recently opted for carryout during a holiday rush, ordering pretty much the basics: Gen Tso and sides. The egg roll and sides were okay. The Gen Tso was tasteless and they barely included any sauce. We had to salvage our meal with a small bowl of microwaved Trader Joe's Gen Tso sauce from our pantry - pathetic considering that Jack's Fortune is also the most expensive non-chain Asian eatery in Annapolis. We've had similar experiences with other menu items there recently. On the upside, the owners are nice folks and the dine-in atmosphere is above average, but I suspect they are more or less just riding on customer loyalty and neighborhood convenience, and not on food quality. Again, lots of Annapolis oldsters still rave about this restaurant. Sorry, but I am over Jack's Fortune, at least for carryout. Would rather go a little out of my way to House of Hunan, P.F. Chang's or Canton.

Dinner tonight for 5 of us. Service was wonderful, as were the garnishes but the food was tasteless. Beef and Broccoli passable but the chicken XO was a drudgery to eat. White rice was the most tasteful thing we had next to the fortune cookie. Salt and Pepper wings were just fried wings with some scallions and peppers tossed on top. Calamari chewy and very breaded, no sauce. Shrimp toast was perhaps the other best thing on the table. House of Hunan a better option in ANP.

Truly awesome experience when dining in decided to revisit after my last visit of take out. The beef and spring onion truly amazing and loved the service too will be back to dine in soon!

Oh my. As others have said, Chinese food in Annapolis? Well not really, but when we crave even the Americanized version this place does not deliver. If you love peanuts and just want to eat peanuts order the Kung Pao Chicken. Then if you want to play with your food try finding any discernible pieces of meat. Chopsticks can come in handy here. Want flavor or heat? Won't find it here. If you are a fan of wilted 3 inch pieces of green onion, and then a couple of handfuls of fresh green onion, order the shredded pork, Peking style. Once again, enjoy playing find Waldo, as you look for any traces of protein. Oh and don't believe the menu about plum sauce. This dish was drenched in Hoisin. Ugh. A little goes a long way with this concoction and does best when it's flavors are used to enhance not drown. My favorite however, was the fried rice. All it was, I kid you not, was rice bathed in soy sauce. Really? And considering this was take-out lunch the bill was close to $17 bucks. I know these places have high sodium levels, but I have NEVER had to drink three bottles of water after eating some nuts and onions. If I'm craving some hum drum mediocre Americanized Chinese I am heading straight for Hunan House.

I've been to Hong Kong and China, Jacks is every bit as good or better then the places I visited. Not on the menu? Ask. More times than not they can make it. Jack's special fish is Devine as is the crispy chicken or beef. I've been eating there for 4+ years and it's great. If you can be there on Chinese New Year, do it. Great show and service is always on point.

I did not have high expectations but this place was close for takeout. Strictly 2-3 stars. Lo mein and brown rice was way over cooked. The triple delight had no flavor and paltry serving of meat. Folks were very pleasant though. we travel continuously on our boat and never get to the same place twice. One generality is that the quality of Chinese food has deteriorated everywhere. It's not just cutting back on meat and veg quality, the food has less and less taste. May Thai food is the way to go.

Been to Jack's a few times now, so I figured they deserve a review. The service is great for dine in and for take-out. I love the customer service, every one is so polite and friendly. The food is usually great. I love the Shrimp and Chicken in brown sauce, the lo mein is okay. Only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 is because they don't offer their lunch specials or even combination plates on the weekend. It sucks but it won't stop me from going there.

Holy Vegetable Dumpling! There is always a first for everything. Today was the first time I chowed down on Chow Mein on Christmas Day. If it had to be Chinese Food (this is my boyfriend's family tradition), I'm glad this place made the cut. What I enjoyed: 5 Vegetable Dumplings (Plump & delicious) 5 Bhuddist Delight (like traditional Bhudda's delight, accept they tried to be different and change the name). 5 Vegetable Fried Rice 5 Szetchwan Style Green Beans (I really didn't try Chow Mein, but it sounded good right!?) What a pleasure it is to enjoy screamin good Chinese food that isn't over-cooked, over-salted or over-spiced. Yum! Apparently this place is the boyfriend's family favorite hot spot. They know her by first name and have her order memorized! Would I return here again!? Oh yes. Anytime, day or night. Enjoy!

I really love this place, but the prices keep going up and the food disappointed me the last few times. Dinners are like $17 (and you have no choice of size) which we feel is excessive for chinese food. Don't get me wrong--they give good portions and I'll eat the leftovers for days because the quality isn't questionable like our other choice, Joy Luck. We got it as carryout last time, which seems to be where chinese food tends to fail. I ordered the szechuan beef, which was true to its name last time and was beautifully spicy. This time it was bland and it definitely not shredded. Just beef strip...things. Either they gave me the wrong dish or they got lazy. Kind of bummed for a hefty price tag. That being said, their egg drop soup is fantastic and all my other experiences with this place over the years have been positive. Just seems like the prices are going up and the quality is going down.

I want to start off with saying that I am loyal to Court of Shanghai, but I do think Jack's Fortune is awesome. The service there is really great. You walk in and are greeted by a sweet woman named May. The whole staff is actually just made of cute older Chinese women. One thing that annoys me at restaurants is when they never refill your water. That is never an issue here, they refill your cup every five minutes. The food is great for american Chinese food and let's be honest it's what we all really love. If you go to any Chinese restaurant in Annapolis looking for something authentic you are in for the worst surprise of your life. The food here is never excessively oily and never takes long to make. I think if you are on the fence whether to go you should give it a try.

So I thought I'd give them another try again since it has been a couple of years. We ordered Beef Chow Fun (no its not on the menu but they served it up anyways) and Mango Shrimp and Shrimp Toast. This order was WAY better than I had remembered! Very fresh and some of the better tasting Chow Fun in the area. Had to up their rating because of that. Not sure if they upped their game or what, but all of a sudden I have a new favorite place for Chow Fun and other semi-authentic Chinese Food.

Ugh. Bland. Bland. BLAND! We had the Pu-Pu platter for 2, Sesame Chicken, Szechuan Beef and Wonton Soup. It was the blandest, stickiest Chinese I have ever eaten. My beef was supposed to be spicy. Guess what? Nope!! Don't waste your money here. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

The service and presentation are unmatched for the price when considering Chinese cuisine in Annapolis. The portion sizes are large enough to share and the traditional dishes are done well. The restaurant excels in more unique entrees and specials. The only drawbacks are spicy dishes are not all that spicy and there is a lot of "sauce" covered dishes that rebrand the same meat and veggies with just the additional toppings to differentiate. A very good deal.

Jack's Fortune was wonderful! I tried this place on a Thursday afternoon during lunch hours and was delighted with the service and food. I was given hot tea and H2O promptly and my appetizer of wonton soup and egg roll was up in about 2 minutes. The EGG ROLLS here are the BEST I've ever had! I ordered another one :) I was just as pleased with the pork fried rice and General Tso's chicken. Quiet and nice oriental ambiance with classical music in the background. Would be nice to take my girlfriend here sometime. All in all I would say that the food is just about as great as Court of Shanghai, one of my favorites in Annapolis, but not quite as expensive! Enjoy!

  • Kelly K.

Food was very bland, no real flavor. I ordered the Cantonese hot pot, and it had ammoniated scallops (a whole two of them) and absolutely no flavor. I've had baby food with better flavor. The fried rice wasn't really fried rice, it was rice with soy sauce added. My bf got crispy beef, which was far from crispy. I don't know how long this place has been around, but I wanted to try someplace new, and I can say, we won't be back. $50 in our takeout order and I can say it was not worth $20 of it. I have no problem paying good money for good food.. This was a waste.

The food is very good...location is excellent. I think the prices are a bit on the high-end for most of their entrees. Their "Hong Kong" duck is very good and worth the price. The service is good attentive. Your water glass will never go empty.

"Best Chinese in Annapolis" is a misnomer as there really isn't ANY Chinese food in Annapolis PERIOD. I'm talking about real ethnic cuisine that Chinese people would actually eat at not just work in like Hunan Manor in Columbia or New Big Wong in DC's Chinatown. I agree with the reviewer who also said Annapolis is sadly a desert when it comes to even decent 'asian-inspired' food as a good 80% of the options are just dismal to any actual discerning palate. Reviewers handing Jack's a 5-star rating here are doing you dear reader, and the Yelp community at large a serious disservice. To the reviewer making ardent claims of 'fresh, homemade, not frozen' have you been actually IN the kitchen of this place to verify these 'facts'??? If so you can probably name their suppliers as backup - I didn't see any references in your 'review' however. This review is of Jack's for lunch to-go getting my usual suite of 'asian-inspired' dishes that I use to benchmark these 'Chinese' food purveyors; sm hot & sour soup and a kung pao chicken or in today's case 'lunch combination #15' which includes an egg roll and fried rice. Prices very reasonable $2.95 for the soup and $6.95 for the lunch combo which is within 1-2 bucks of the average around NAPtown for the same grub. The hot & sour soup had a hefty amount of ingredients including the typical suspects tofu, pork, button mushrooms, and green onions but lacked in the areas of woodear mushrooms and any semblance of 'sour' - almost like they left out the vinegar this time. Decent flavor and heat but missing 50% of the flavor experience. Gets a mulligan of sorts because of how hearty it was. The fried wontons that accompanied were slightly stale. The egg roll was pretty typical and I'm going with the one reviewer who suggested these were pre-made and bought ready to fry. The merchant also scoffed a bit when I asked for some house mustard to go with it - she tried to brush me off with more mustard packets which have about as much taste as that yellow crud kids put on their hot dogs. The kung pao was the slight surprise at Jacks as it wasn't adorned with anything but peanuts, red chili peppers, and green onions. I've seen so many 'kitchen sink' kung paos in my time that are downright nasty. This one had good heat - still-crisp-edged chicken pieces, good brown sauce and no mystery parts. My only beef is it didn't have enough green onion (they never do for me) and some of the green onion was tough which means it might have been a tad dated. Jack's can safely take #2 in town for their Kung Pao Chicken only surpassed by House of Hunan in Riva Fest. Portion size was a tad off on the lunch combo as there was about 75% fried rice to 25% kung pao. The fried rice was simply that too - just rice and soy sauce (lots of it). NOTHING else - no egg, no onion, no pork pieces nada zip zero. Fried rice usually isn't served in it's literal translation - there's 'stuff' in it usually. There was at least a pound of the stuff in that box too with enough salt in it to safely stash a barrel of nuclear waste in. Jack's is good enough that I'd try a dine-in some day to round out my experience and try something else that isn't available on the lunch menu (like the duck). But 5-stars??? Comedy might be better suited to you 5-star folks here but not food-critic that's just plain crazy talk. If the day comes we get a Hunan Manor type actual Chinese restaurant here where you will see the Chinese families LINE UP to get in will be the day I stop catering to these wanna-be joints. But like most foodies you need the occasional 'fix' regardless how inauthentic it may be. Jack's will get you through the DTs just fine and A-OK. 3 Stars - no more no less. NOT REMOTELY HUMBLY SUBMITTED this day, D. Food Snob, Ph.D.

My family and myself love this place. First, Jack and his wife are always there and meet you like your are old friends and we are. The rest of the staff are the best around always waiting on your every need. My wife starts off with fried green beans, she loves them. Every thing we have ordered come out of the kitchen super hot and more then one can eat a a single sitting, always some for the next day lunch. I'm not one to try new things, they call me the bland man, but I have gone out and tried some new things other then my Chicken Chow Mein. Give Jack's a try, your be glad you did!!!

Like other reviewer have said, the service really is good here and that is the only reason they're getting two stars. The food is extremely bland and some of the heaviest Chinese food you're likely to find (even compared to other Americanized Chinese food places). I've tried probably about 5-10 dishes here and I've both never had anything I enjoyed...most, if not all, dishes are drenched in heavy, nondescript sauces. Like most older people, my parents love this place. I think the nearby nursing home keeps them in business...which perhaps explains the blandness of the food. Unless you're over 60, you will probably not enjoy this restaurant. If, on the other hand, you are an early-bird-special kind of person...you may have just found your go to Chinese restaurant in Annapolis.

I have to first start off by saying the service was fast and friendly. But it doesn't make up for the bland food. I have never had Chinese that did not have flavor. Both my fiancees and I's dinners were bland. His dinner was some type of dark mystery meat. It was horrible. Definitely will not be returning. No amount of soy sauce could have helped!

Jacks Fortune has always been a pretty good experience. I very much enjoy that most of the clientele is 30+, and refined. There seem to be quite a few regulars who like to enjoy a variety of Chinese food dishes. Not sure what comments about not having authentic Chinese food are about, you would have to go to China for that or make specific requests if you expect exact food prep. As others said the staff are friendly and happy to provide dine in or take out. Plenty of parking, and never a wait for seating.

Best Chinese food in Annapolis. Fresh veggies, nice light wrapper for the wonton soup. Very nice staff. Basically good ingredients, good portion size, nice flavors. Not the best Chinese food ever but defiantly the best around here. Blows P.F. changs out of the water.

Most of the food at Jack's Fortune is pretty mediorce but the Salt-and-Pepper chicken wings are divine. You will have dreams about them. I got to be friends with the servers here and they started letting me order "real" Chinese food like Chinese broccoli and baby bok choy. Delicious!

Favorite local Chinese place in Annapolis! I've been eating here for years, and its always been good. I will admit, I found something I liked at the beginning and stuck with it. They have fantastic chicken with string beans along with a very tasty egg drop soup! Eventually I will try something different, but when your regular is this good, it's difficult to stray from it. Good service, family owned. Highly recommend!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
