Went there with a couple coworkers on a quiet sunday between shifts. Not more than 2 other tables there. We ordered 1 meal and 2 apps with some iced teas. The waitress was completely rude for no reason to the extent of dropping off waters to one of us to serve to the rest of our party. We left her a $5 tip on a $40 bill and she had the balls to walk out to the parking lot, throw the money at us, and storm away. Really! She followed us the our cars and threw the money at us, said keep it, and walked away. Completely disgraceful. If you're looking for any service don't go there. If you like crappy service, have fun.

Great dive bar/restaurant. Handful of beers on tap, standard American fare. Onion rings better than the French fries, but the fries were good, too. Not happy with the red wine, but that was our fault - should have gone with beer. Feel is that this is where locals go to run into each other and catch up with news (lots of conversations going on), but no sense that a first-timer was not welcome. Definitely casual. Not a first date place, and no sense that it is a singles place either (albeit we were there around 7:00, not later). Mostly adults, but some people had kids along.

That "The Chat" is a dive bar is a given. It's a mile from our house and is always rife with people-watching opportunities. The food and beer selection definitely make up for the ambiance of cheerful neglect that permeates the place. What made for a less-than-satisfying experience was the poor service. It took about 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge us - and it turned out to be the bartender, not our server. From appearances, she was trying to finish her shift and leave, but that sort of thing should be transparent to the customer. It wasn't.

If you love a good dive bar the "Chat" is the place to go. We went on a Saturday evening it was a little after 8pm when we got there and the place was hoping with people. We found a seat and as the waitress caught up with herself ordered some drinks. Typical selections of dive bar beers and a well stocked bar have you plenty of options. Seats at the bar opened and we asked there server if we could take those and she said to help ourselves with no attitude about leaving her table at all. We ordered some food which included the "beer battered burger" which is a HUGE BURGER! 1/2 pound at least! It was grilled then battered and deep fried and covered in melted cheese, peppers and onions and a chipotle sauce. This was priced at $10.95 and was worth every penny as it was perfectly cooked and delicious! The bar emptied out rather quickly but it is Labor Day weekend so not surprised. All in all good service and great food and very fair pricing will bring me back to the "chat" again!

The reality is if a Tavern sparks you to submit a review it's pretty darn good! This is the case. The owners are wonderful, service attentive, and food mouthwatering. Highly recommend finding this hidden gem. And I mean hidden - it's not easy to find but it is worth the effort.

Visited on a bright and sunny day with friends. Fantastic view of the lake with a comfortable atmosphere. The onion rings were amazing and the sauces hit the right note! They have draft and bottled beers to go. All of us ordered their grilled veggie burger, which was juicy, but I was expecting more from the reviews. Two beers, an appetizer and a burger for under $20 per person. Great value for the money.

"In .1 miles turn right onto Crest Rd." "HOLY COW, GPS! I'm glad I don't drive a Suburban. Where are you taking me? Over a cliff?! This place can't be..." "Arriving at destination". "What? Where? That!?" Yes, the Dudley Chateau looks like a big ol' wood shingled house on an overgrown lakeside (on what may be the most narrow road in Massachusetts). Luckily, as you turn the corner there is ample parking. Walk in (use the little door to the right, with the laser-printed sheet of paper that says "entrance") and you enter the past. It really has a 'lodge' sort of feel. Painted wood floors greet you, and stairs with a fraying, rope-wrapped railing invite you up. At the top of those steps are some really cheap drinks and some excellent food. It was a UYE that introduced me to this place, and Roni and I agreed to trade half of our burgers with each other. I can tell you that both were delicious, and cooked nearly perfectly (both more medium than medium rare, but not bad at all for a tiny pub that looks like a house). The beer is cheap, and the selection is well chosen, but not expansive. I am hoping that there's another staff member there on most nights. Our bartender was harried, as she was also playing waitress for the whole place. Granted, it's quite small (the windows out to the lake make it feel nice and open), but that was a lot to ask of one employee. She did a fine job, though, despite our disjointed order (we had 2 groups ordering at 2 different times at one table) and large party of 9. To be fair, they probably didn't expect a large contingent of metrowest yelpers to show up on a Tuesday evening, either, which was probably the reason for the low staffing. All in all it was a delicious, fun time. I'm looking forward to going back!

Dear Dudley Chateau, I know this is really early in our relationship, but I have to tell you that I love you. You make me tingle in special ways I didn't think were possible. I found you hidden away, chilling next to your lake, just cool as a cucumber. Pretense be damned, you are so secure in your dirt parking lot and random door on the side of a house. From the first course touch of your dim foyer and rope railing I was hooked. Your ambiance tickles me in a particular way that makes me completely and immediately comfortable. The eye candy is also quite special as well. What I'm saying is you, my little duddles, are hot, and cool. Rawr. You could have served up reheated chili at this point, and I still wouldn't have blinked while gazing longingly into your tv. But no. You bust out the serious gourmet on me. That burger you made me, you know, the one with the special little pocket of cheese in the middle, that thing made me quiver. That burger was cooked perfectly. The fries were even better, but I think by then, I may have crossed the line into complete bias. All my friend's meals were also cooked perfectly, and tasty, and ranged from sandwiches, salads, and burgers. I know you cooked mine special. I could tell. I can't wait until we can get together again. It won't be soon enough. Love, Eric. xoxo

Why would anyone consider going to The Morse Tavern when you could go to The Dudley Chateau !! The Chat is almost the perfect neighborhood bar. Good beer selection and all around reasonably priced drinks. Being from Natick, I am somewhat jealous of my fellow Waylanders only by the fact that I have to drive a little further to "hang at The Chat ". Now.. here is the hidden secret ... The food is GREAT ... Let me clarify, it is Bar/Pub food but they do a fine job preparing it and it tastes very good. The burgers are big and juicy and the buffalo wings are top notch. Also, don't be afraid of the specials menu. I had the fish tacos the other night and holy cow was I surprised how tasty they were. Do I dare say possibly the best fish tacos I have tasted in the area ! I will definitely be going back soon to try out some other menu items. Its not on the menu but if Ken the owner is there, ask him if he can whip up some of their homemade chicharones ( pork rinds ) -- its a rare treat! So, if you are in the neighborhood, I recommend you give it a try. You will not be disappointed....

Great food. Cheap drinks. Swimming in history. The only thing that holds this joint back from 5 stars is Velveeta on the nacho plate. Cripes, everything else is 5 plus, already. Use REAL cheese, please! In other words, everything you order OTHER than the Nachos, is grand. Superlative, even. Salads, burgers, the fish and chips..... Just don't order the Nachos, unless you like Velveeta cheese food product. Even the name makes me ooooooogie. I have to mention, that the night we attended; the bartender was also our waitress, and she was one busy gal; but she did her best to keep up with us. And, she was awesome at it. Kudos!

Just 6 and a half miles away from us for 12 years, and I only just found out about this place today on Phantom Gourmet. We were looking for a nearby casual Sunday supper and decided to give it a try. Hidden away in a neighborhood of what were tiny summer cottages back in the day, the Chat dates back to an earlier era. Cozy and dive-y with low wooden ceilings, shingles on the walls and summer lake house decor, it probably hasn't changed in 50 years and fits like a comfy old sneaker. Well, maybe not exactly comfy with wooden pews for chairs, but they just go with it all. Sunday night football on the TVs, but not really a sports bar, this is a neighborhood jeans-and-a-baseball-cap kind of place. The booth next to us had a family with 2 pre-teens, and on the other side, a couple of guys with some beers. I had a "mini" burger--5 ounces--with blue cheese, lettuce, tomato and red onion. $5.20, for crying out loud. Plus a dollar to upgrade from fries to really good onion rings. On a recommendation from the waitress, my husband got skewered steak tips. For me, those are iffy--usually dry and stringy, but these were tender and a perfect medium rare. They came with sauteed onions and peppers and rice. My only drawback was that we sat next to a window, and I was chilly. Well, what should I expect from a once-upon-a-time summer shack? I kept my sweatshirt zipped, and it was nearly OK. All in all a big surprise and a fun date. We'll be back.

I have been twice to the chat, once for dinner and once for lunch both times the food was very good and food and beer are very reasonably priced. It's perfect for a casual, completely non-portentous, intimate, local pub-like place. The service is friendly, albeit stretched thin, and apologetic for any wait you may have. The view is lovely, especially during the day, the only thing that would make this place better is an outdoor dining area for the sunny warm days, but I believe the neighborhood has building restrictions. At any rate, I highly recommend the burgers! They even have a small version of each burger for smaller appetites, but you'll want a big one!

What is there not to love about this place!?!? Dive bar that I can bring my 13 yr old to, awesome burgers, great friendly staff, cheap, great atmosphere, etc..need I say more? Oh yeah, cold beer :)!! Can't wait to go back with friends some night for a few cocktails.

This is the epitome of your hole in the wall bar. It escapes being called a 'dive" as it's set in lovely Wayland on Dudley Pond...although it looks like the decor is from the 50's :) but who cares as the people make the place and the owners and staff are great and really make you feel welcome. Everyone seems to have a good time- I know I do. They have maybe 6 beers on draft with a wide enough range to satisfy the spectrum of beer drinkers. My favourite is Narragansett which is tasty and a fantastic price for a pint. Foodwise: You shouldn't expect cordon bleu but it's very good. Their fries are excellent and I am quite content with the bargain mini Chat Burger for $5. (reg burger=$9-10) Fish and chips are great. My girlfriend is veggie and she says they have the best ever veggie burger -- firm, succulent and tasty. Onion rings are fantastic too with multiple dips. Only two things stop me from giving it a 5 star....it can get very loud as it is essentially a bar with an open dining area and the bar denizens can get a tad rambunctious but its a bar so sit back and enjoy the hub bub...but much worse they oddly stopped providing malt vinegar because some of the bar staff "didn't like the smell". Uh? As we all know malt vinegar plus fries/chips = a joyful flavour explosion. That decision just does not compute.

Wow. We heard about this place a year back on the Phantom Gourmet. We found it only by GPS. Once inside and climbed the stairs that clearly have not been replaced in year. We found a kind of unwelcoming crowd. Before you judge as we almost did. It is clearly a locals hangout, but we stood there for a few minutes waiting for a table. Jim who said he is not sure if he really works there or not. Greeted us and said to sit anywhere. The place even being old and dated (in a good way) we sat at a table and before long we were greeted by Amy. So nice, so helpful and a great server. Ask for her when you go. She covered every table with ease. As it got busier it took some time for her to get back to us but always a smile and very accommodating. The food was great. We had the Steak and Cheese Spring Rolls. What can I say. Steak and cheese fried in a wonton. YUM!! and them we had the fish and chips. The fish was so fresh and everything was so well prepared. I would give this 10 start if I could. We will be returning.

If you are looking for an unassuming eating and drinking experience, the Chat is the place for you. The new management has done a wonderful job of upgrading the facility without sacrificing the place's old-school charm and its sense of local history. The Chat has long been the subject of controversy in town, some Waylanders decrying it as a disruptive scourge on an otherwise idyllic community. I see this place as having the potential to become one of the town's greatest assets. The new management has already done a lot to make this a reality, having added an array of good beers and family-friendly food options. Currently you can go to the Chat during a Sox game and get wings (buffalo or BBQ) for $.25 each! Their standard 10oz burgers are delicious, but customers with smaller appetites might consider ordering the smaller version. The staff is very friendly and attentive.

Bring your ID. I got carded & didn't have mine so no drink for me. Everyone recommended the cheeseburgers, so I ordered one - it was gooood. Total dive - which was good as I was still in pajamas & wasn't planning on going out to eat. I didn't feel out of place :)

Went for the 2nd time today. Both experiences the same. Food OK - service not. One bartender trying to serve ten tables and the bar all by herself. Not acceptable. Owner needs to understand that maximizing staff earnings may be in conflict with what customer wants. Been there myself - owned 3 restaurants in my earlier life.

It's a miracle this place is here at all. Super nice service. Weird VFW like building right on the pond. Before they resided, it looked like it was condemned. Defines "hole in the wall". I say this affectionately, it's a dive, in the absolute best sense. Excellent, relaxed hangout kind of place that just doesn't exist in this area. Good burgers and beer selection! Go at least once and watch the sun set. Gotta love the incongruity of the name too. Edit: they've redone the outside so it's nicer, but the inside is still musty after it rains (charm!). Also, the burgers are good, but the steaktips are great! Love the sassy servers.

This has quickly become one of my favorite places in the Metrowest Area. The 'CHAT' burgers are the best around, they have one that is stuffed with Blue Cheese and is just amazing - also keep an eye out for their specials including the Smokey Burger - it's fantastic. In addition to their delicious burgers, they have a good draft list, currently they have Left Hand Milk Stout on tab, before that they had a Brooklyn Imperial Stout, and back around Thanksgiving had Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin which is the Pumpkin Ales big strong brother at around 10%. Drinks are very reasonable at around 4.00 - 4.50 for the crafts and much less for the standards. The owner is a great guy and has made many upgrades especially in the kitchen and menu, while keeping the charm of the place in tact. Via la Chat!

  • Roger W.

Pretty much a dive, but by far the best restaurant in Wayland. At least half a dozen real beers on draft (plus the "usual suspects") as well as a wide range of bottled. Love the Green Monstah! As burger joints go it is outstanding. Burgers are big, well prepared, on a nice bun. And then there are the onion rings. I've been known to drive for hours in the middle of the night for a good onion ring and here, within bicycling distance of my house, is near perfection. A little new-age-ish with the Panko bread crumbs, but it works! Crunchy, a high onion to crust ratio, perfectly cooked. The rings alone earn five stars. My son says that the french fries are made from actual potatoes and are pretty good too. Whether with friends for a beer or the family for dinner, this is a great neighborhood pub. A nice step away from suburban pretension, a friendly, welcoming real place. A real shame the local Gendarmes have such a prejudice against live music and don't allow bands to perform here.

OK, so I've lived 5 minutes away for 24 years and never knew this place existed. It just goes to show that you're never to old to find something new...er...old...er...old and new. You know what I mean. Just try it for yourself, but use your GPS navigator to find it.

After reading the news that the chat had been taken over by new mgmt, I was excited to try it out. I stopped by on the night of the Pats 1st preseason game and was surprised by the good crowd in attendance. Sat at the bar and ordered a Dudley burger with bacon and cheddar with fries and a local craft beer. The atmosphere is still funky and friendly and the food is head and shoulders above the old chat. In fact, I had one of the best burgers I have had in the burbs for years. The fries were crisp and hot as well. I would like to see a wider selection of craft beers but i wont complain since the Chateau is in my neighborhood. Let's support our local businesses and restaurants

Love the burgers. A great place to gather with friends. Nice staff. They lose one star for the condition of the building which is badly in need of repairs.

Yay, the Chat is open again. It's under new ownership and has been left pretty much the same except for some of the old paraphernalia which is gone. Oh, and there's a new kitchen... with real food... on a regular basis. Awesome.

The Chat was a favorite treat for lunch in Natick for me. The old speakeasy thing with Babe Ruth history and the really out of the way location all speaks loudly in there. Food isn't special (though cheap with friendly staff) but the atmosphere/history/experience is. I don't know about any renovations, but I'd be sorry to see it TOO renovated. However, I'm glad someone is taking care of it, as it could use a little TLC.

We went to the Chateau last week with a few buddies from Wayland, which was a good thing considering its residential location! It was snowing and the pond adjacent to the restaurant was beautiful and the restaurant itself emitting a warm (if not worn-in) vibe. The decor is pretty dive bar classic (mostly nautical) and the floors rutted from plenty of patrons, which gives you the sense that you're participating in a Wayland tradition (which my buddies told me I was). It was a Friday and the crowd was pretty mixed, equal parts young folks (college-age) and older folks (40+), all having a good time together. Given what looked to be a small (maybe, just a galley?) kitchen, I had low expectations for the grub--but was shocked by the delicious hand-formed mini cowboy burger (bbq sauce, onion rings) that I was served. The burgers come in two sizes, which is a nice perk. The fries were also pretty good and I think next time I'll order some onion rings. One of my buddies ordered fish tacos made from fresh white fish that the friendly waitress told us came each day from a local fish market, which were also pretty delicious. Another diner at our table ordered a fried burger, which though massive, looked great. We started off the meal with a few drinks (I had a great IPA) and some cheese steak egg rolls, which were great (certainly above average!!). All ten of us ate for $110 bucks including tip with two appetizers, drinks all around, and one entree each. Maybe, I'm jaded by city prices, but this seemed pretty damn cheap to me for what was a pretty great meal in an interesting location!

Inviting and amazingly authentic with fascinating history. Low ceilings are wacky.. Freaky cool. Great location on the pond... Like stepping back 100 years... Good cheap beer... Food is good enough... This is the place to go with your buddies after the game... or take your dad... take a sporting girl to enjoy...

A very fine establishment. Good burger/beer for around $12? Forget about it, can't find a deal like that in this area. Check out the open mic night on the (3rd??) Wed. of every month. Long live The Chat!!

My favorite new hidden spot. This old school private club, turned local tavern is one of the best kept secrets outside of Boston. In fact if you live in the city and think there's nothing outside of 128 to hold your interest, you are sorely, sorely mistaken. Interior is sort of a mix of summer clam-shack meets old-man hunting club. The bar is a bisected wooden lifeboat, and the kitchen just to the left of it is kicking out amazing burgers and greasy, greasy deep fried treats (steak and cheese egg rolls anyone?) Only real downside is that the beer selection, while very good still leaves room for improvement and there's only three or four whiskeys total on the shelf (Jack, Jim, Jameson and maybe Glen Levitt, but don't quote me on the latter). Beef up the liquor selection, maybe fine tune the drafts and add a dozen or so bottled craft beers, and I'll start sleeping in a tent in the parking lot. Love the Chateau. Touch it. Love it! Lieben meine Affe-monkey!!!

I have been going to the Chateau for years. I am really excited about the new owners and the delicious new menu. I had the Blue Burger and it was the best burger I have had in some time, totally delicious. You have to try it! I was disappointed in July when I came in at night for drinks b/c the bartender skipped all of our awesome jukebox songs, but lunch this past week has surely brought me back up to full support. (stop skipping songs!) The waitress was delightful too, even though they were swamped. You simply cannot beat the view on a nice day. Go for lunch and stay for many Wachusett Green Monsta ales, they are delicious.

Great bar where you wouldn't expect a bar to be. The atmosphere is nice and the bar overlooks the pond. There are a lot of families that go here. The selection is ok and the staff is very friendly. They have wine too. I have been in the middle of the day on a Saturday and also after work on a Friday. Friday night got pretty crowded at the end and the parking lot was pretty full. Saturday was much more low-key but still a great atmosphere.

This place recently closed and lost its liquor license. It is now reopened with a food menu. My family went here for dinner and the food wasn't bad. It was pretty typical "bar food" with good wings and mini "slider" burgers. The bar tender was very accomodating considering we were the only ones there for dinner), especially with my 11 year old neighbor.

This place is unbelievable. Words can not really do it justice. It's a former speak-easy that has somehow held on via support from the locals of Wayland and Natick. Babe Ruth and Ted Williams used to fish on Dudley Pond, and whet their whistles inside the Chat. It's cheap and the bartenders are friendly. You have to see it for yourself.

I love this place because it is not trying to be hip, popular or clean. We always joke about going there to slum it at "the Chat". But we actually really like this place. The chicken sandwhich is usually a bit dry but my husband loves their steak tip options. The beers are usually about $4 but usually you can get a 'gansett for $2. I was so happy they had shipyard pumpkin on tap in the fall (put a shot of vanilla vodka in there - YUM!). We usually head over there just to get out of the house for a quick bite and cheap beers. Usually places like this have some shady patrons, but I never feel that way about the Chat!

A real dive with tons of charachter for when you want something different or a cool dive. This place is in a house at the end of a road overlooking a pond in a residential neighborhood. Alot of town-city-workers hide out here and pound cans of bud. There is a pool table and dart board and a great view. No food other than pretzels. Don't be imtimidated when you get there, walk in.

I had seen the Dudley on restaurant.com , and was always intrigued by the look of it. It's also nearby. After being reviewed favorably on Phantom, I figured it was time to give it a try. The room smells of a country cottage, and the window looks out onto a lake. Is this really Wayland? Feels like we're in New Hampshire. We started with some chicken fingers. Not a huge order and somewhat overcooked, but respectable. The onion ring plate was better. Huge rings, nicely cooked, not greasy. I had a burger with blue cheese cooked right into it, and a side salad. The burger wasn't huge, but nicely grilled, on a tasty bun. The salad was generous. My wife's veggie burger was good. Overall, a fun experience. It's moody, a great way to escape the city for a few moments. Service was attentive and friendly. There's plenty of parking. Make sure you use a map or a GPS to get here - it's in the back of a residential area.

When you think of a small, comfortable, local hangout, this is what you envision. Great pub fare, a unique building, out of the way location, and lots of regulars - it all adds up to your quintessential casual dining and drinking experience. Like others have mentioned: good luck finding the place, and avoid driving into the pond while parking. Otherwise, enjoy!

Who would have thought.... A complete shack in the middle of nowhere. This place has nothing for atmosphere, but turned into quite a night spot. Packed house, with wing specials and surprisingly good food . I'll be back!!!! Try the 35 cent wings during Red Sox games. Cheap beer & the Sox on multiple LCD screens. Staff was friendly, and fun. What a find!

I've been living in the MetroWest area for almost my entire life and I had no idea this place existed until a few weeks ago. After work one night I decided to meet up with a friend for some late night drinks. Off of Route 30, sitting behind a quiet neighborhood alongside Dudley pond is the Dudley Chateau. A freestanding, white house-like structure serving up food and great inexpensive drinks. Passing through the entrance of the heavily wooden structure I was reminded of the Union Oyster House in Boston. Similar large beams suspend overhead and uneven floors that creak with each footstep are some of the unique features you'll find at this establishment. Ascending up the staircase my friend and I were brought into the main bar and dining area. We sat ourselves at a table made from slabs of thick wood with a glossy texture bound together by metal links. Quickly we were greeted by a friendly waitress who took our drink orders. Feeling a bit hungry I had the "'Chat' Sliders," four little mini hamburgers arranged on a plate satisfy my hunger craving. Drinks arrived in a timely fashion: Jack n' Coke and a Sam Adam's Light. After two round it was time to head home and we received out bill. Normally, at the chain restaurants one round of drinks could run diners almost $10-15. But here two rounds of similar drinks barely came to $20.00! ! ! Talk about a great deal! The Dudley Chateau doesn't offer any of the high class bells and whistles of most bars but successfully delivers a solid atmosphere to sit with friends and enjoy a round of drinks. It is great to see a place that serves its purpose. I'll be back soon!

In 1817, a ship traveling around the world became lost and crashed along the shores of Lake Cochicuate. Rather than attempting to repair the ship, the captain and first mate salvaged the ship's wood and used it to build the Dudley Chateau. The ship's coal engine was moved into the kitchen, allowing the creation of delicious meals with appetizing titles beginning with the past participle 'Chat.' 5th mate Doug sold his ability to be mean to the devil for eternal life . His unofficial role as social director was made official this year. The Chat is fun and affordable and has friendly staff and patrons. Its history is so impressive that it almost seems made-up. Recommended.

The food was avg+, but the restaurant is a dump. I'd rather eat PB&Js on a log in the forest. I'd rather get a salad from stop and shop and eat it in my car. the list goes on and on. Luckily it's hidden away so I don't ever have to see this place again. I wish the owners and patrons the best of luck...away from me.

As a Wayland townie who grew up knowing The Chat as a ramshackle looking dive bar for worn down fishermen and DPW workers, it's been awesome to see it transform over the last 2-3 years. Don't get me wrong, the crowd is still mostly locals, with the group of late 40's moms yucking it up while the grizzled old dudes stand around the bar. Cheap and cheerful food that you'd expect at a gastro-pub, with a decent selection of beers. I'm naturally conditioned to avoid those on tap here since the old management rarely would keep them clean, but might be worth a shot now. Plenty of seating, lots of big screen tvs to watch any of the baseball, football and basketball games, and cheap cheap cheap wings during the games make this a nice and easy place to go and grab some beers to catch up with friends.

Hard to find but once I did it was a a fun time. Nice for a dive. Food was ok. More of a drinking place though.

Man, you gotta love the Chateau. Or the Chat (pronounced "shat") as it's known. The place looks like a run-down place you'd find in some New England coastal town that never quite made it as a tourist destination. The bar is mostly local business types and/or old men who revel in the dirt-cheap PBRs available. The food is decent. The Chat Burger is solid, though if someone in your party asks for well done, you ALL get well done. Discourage these people from asking for their burger a tasteless brick. The fries were good, and as one would expect, the food is not at all expensive. The staff was friendly when some food was sent back for being inedible in their well done-ness. Anyway, the Chat is great for a solid lunch. I'd go back any time. And you can't beat that lake view.

I really like this place! The staff is friendly, the beer selection is strong, and the pub food is AMAZING! They have the 2nd Best Wings in MA, only to be outdone by Buff's Pub in Newton! The decor looks like an old fishihg lodge, but it's a great place to watch a game or hangout with friends. The servers can get busy, and might forget to check up your table, but they don't seem to mind if you get up to get their attention, just a really laid back place!

It seems like there aren't many restaurants left where you can walk in and almost smell the history that happened there-- it's a musty smell of aged wood and beers finished long, long ago-- but The Dudley Chateau is a place where you can do that. An old speakeasy that welcomed the likes of Ted Williams and Babe Ruth in the Prohibition Era, the Chateau is now a neighborhood bar and restaurant that overlooks the surprisingly picturesque Dudley Pond. Food is good. I got a chicken club sandwich with a generous amount of fries, and my friends all got variations of burgers/tacos/salads and were pleased with their choices. The prices are reasonable-- it's about $10-11 average per sandwich, though mine was only $9. Despite its history, expect to show your ID here, as The Chateau has had run-ins with the law in the not-so-distant past regarding ID-checking. The newest owners seem to enforce a tight ship when it comes to checking IDs. It's also a decidedly "beer" bar; there are a couple of cocktails in the menu, but it might be best to save your fancy drink orders for, well...some place in Boston. Our server was attentive and friendly. Maybe the cranky server wasn't on duty that night? Hard to know, but our experience was a good one.

It's been over 10 years since I've been here and now I remember why. I've lived in Wayland for a long time and tonight was a night I wanted to stay local, grab a drink and a bite and relax. The place is a dive. I knew that going in. The head bartender is a delight.....based on her I'd give it 5 stars, but The bar back bartender is a jerk hence the one star. She was More interested in texting and puffing on her asthma inhaler and going out back for a smoke (I didn't see her wash her hands upon returning) and flipping her hair back then being service oriented. Food took forever. Was mediocre at best. And I feel like I need a shower after visiting Next time I want local - I'll go to The Local in Wayland center.

I got a cheeseburger and my boyfriend got "the Dudley burger." Both were juicy and delicious. Onion rings were crispy but not too oily. French fries were my favorite, crispy and nicely seasoned. We stopped by on our drive home from CT and it was a pleasant surprise. Not as divey as others described, right next to the pond but we could only see the parking lot from where we sat. Service was great and food came out promptly.

We dined here many times in the past, and we tolerated the rude behavior of one of the waitresses. Unfortunately the extraordinarily rude behavior of one of the waitresses has led to our no longer dining here. Get rid of her and drop the "chatitude "

Rude ass wait staff and bartender! Was excited to try for first time but we were not greeted at door and had to look for waitress who didn't seem interested in our business, telling us you would normally seat yourself but all seats are full. FYI - clearly two open seats at bar. She could of at least said if you wait a few min a table should open up. No smiley happy faces here on a Sunday night! We decided to sit at the bar. The bartender took 5 min to greet us, rudely may I add, and only 4 other people at bar. Folks, this place only seats about 30. Waiting for my food, but even if it's good I won't be back. I guess if your not a regular or local, beware.

These hamburgers are absolutely enormous. I traveled here for a quick lunch one day (because I want looking to eat fresh) and was surprised at the reasonable prices and friendly staff. Come with a big appetite, the beer selection is appropriate, the portion sizes are excessive, and the food is awesome.

These guys are truly victims of their own success. Came here with my wife a few months ago on a Thursday night and the service was terrible. They took our names but whenever some local came in they would just grab a table and the waitresses/servers weren't really keeping track. After asking MANY times when our table would be up we finally just ordered at the bar an hour into a 10 minute wait. Food was OK, prices were nothing special. Our waitress was apologetic, thanked us for not being jerks, and comped us a round of beers. The staff was friendly, just super-disorganized and not really handling things great. The atmosphere is also great. Cool setting and nice staff bring a one star experience up to three. If this was next door to me and hadn't been discovered by Chronicle and the Phantom Gourmet I'd be a regular. As it is, no way is it worth the drive, wait, and hassle.

    I. Love. This. Place. It's a dive, tucked away in a residential neighborhood that surrounds Dudley Pond in Wayland, MA. A little difficult to find, but a hidden gem once you find it. This place has an amazing history, dating back to even before my Mom was a kid. (She grew up in Wayland and loves to say, "I never came here (to the Chat) growing up, because 'Nice girls didn't frequent places like this'.") Now we go a few times a month. Even the front door is hard to find. (OK, it's on the right near the small dumpster.) The stairs up to the main floor are bowed, worn and rickety. The servers are salty and some of the regulars are grimy, but boy nothing beats The Chat for food, drink and fun atmosphere! Great burgers, fish n' chips and onion rings. Everything I've eaten here tastes good. The beer is cold. The place is loud. What more could you want from a hole in the wall? NOT a good place for kids, even though some folks insist on bringing theirs. This is a BAR, people. Tables seat about 40 people in total, so it gets crowded on the weekends. Prepare to wait for a table, then prepare to wait for your food. Sometimes they only have one server on (for the whole place, acting as bartender, too!) And sometimes it seems like the kitchen processes one table's order, start-to-finish, at a time. So don't come when you have time constraints. Do come when you have some time to kill, want to kick back and soak in the atmosphere while you wait for your DELICIOUS food. Hope to see you there!

OK food. Horrible service. Ehh, beer selection could be improved. Looks like a dive bar on the inside but has some character. What's up with all the junk on the bottom floor?! Definitely not a good first impression as I walked in the door. Service was terrible, had to wait 20 minutes just to get the check and leave. The restaurant was nearly empty yet I had to walk up to our waitress and ask for my check, who just was sitting at the bar playing with her hair and texting on her phone. The lack of attentiveness was shocking.

Classic dive bar, but steeped in baseball history, good beer, and actually really good food. I don't give the 5 stars lightly; The Chat is perfect for what it is.

This place is an old building with kind friendly faces and no frills. It's a family style restaurant and bar all in one big room. After 7:00 PM it may not be appropriate for children, only because of the amount of drinking being done. The place is built to look like a ship, and many ship artifacts are spread throughout. They have a great menu of sandwiches (even two very good vegetarian ones), terrific onion rings, fries, meals, and more. The bar is fun and reasonably priced. The staff are fun and do a very good job. It's a great place to meet a friend for a drink, have a family meal, or go have drinks later in the evening.

Some call it divey I see rustic charm! Been coming here for years. Great place for a cold beer, appetizers and KENO. Nice views and I see people of all ages even families with young kids. Good kiddie menu. And yes don't go in a rush.

Went here on a whim one Sunday afternoon after seeing it on Phantom Gourmet. We were surprised at how many people were eating/drinking there given how difficult it is to find (even our GPS had a hard time locating the place!) We ended up crowded down at the end of the bar near the ATM and weren't exactly comfortable, but we didn't want to leave after finally finding it. The bartender was also one of the few waitresses so service was slow and the bartender was a bit frazzled. We eventually got her attention and ordered draft beers and nachos, which were very good. If we return, we probably won't stay if it's as busy as it was that day.

No fancy menu but it was good. And the price is right! It feels a bit of a dive bar but with a friendly atmosphere. Great place to have a beer and a meal. I like my chicken tips, my coworker got a good lookin burger. Service was also great.

I really loved the atmosphere and they have some really nice seats with a view of the lake. This place can be really hard to find, unless you have a GPS. Food was average, we had chicken wings and burgers and they were not as good as other places. This is a fun place to have a beer, hangout with friends and be with all your buddies

  • Jon P.

The cowboy burger is delicious, they also have a Mac and cheese burger special that is very good. If you go there definitely also try the buffa-que tenders or wings which are half and half bbq and buffalo. Highly recommend all of their food. Beer selection is great. Great place to eat, and grab a beer.

We were very excited to try Dudley Chateau. Food OK. Appetizers were good, Burgers just OK, and under cooked. My medium rare burger was very red and rare. The bun was soggy which made it impossible to pickup. The service was terrible. We had a reservation for a large party and waited 1/2 for our table. When finally seated it took another 10 minutes to get menus and order drinks. The waitress was did not seem to care at all about us, and only came to the table when we flagged her down. One meal was never delivered and she did not notice it until we told her we were waiting for only more, only to be told she forgot to order it. The final burger arrived after we were all finished. She never checked to see how our meals were, or for us to order more drinks. It took 15 minutes go get our check, because she decided to take a break and go outside.

Average at best. Burgers = Sysco (I.e., Not fresh, without taste). Additionally, my biggest pet peeve when out to eat....Charging for refills on soda, the ultimate cheapo move IMHO. In conclusion, if you are looking for the ultimate dive bar with great food, you've got one half of that here.

lunch recently....yes it is way out of the way in wayland, yes it is a BAR, yes it does sit on a pretty pond, yes it is old.....was built in 1923 according to the very busy waitress and it looks like it has been kept original (old).....place got busy pretty quickly as we watched the fisherman trolling around the pond, here it seems they do know your name and probably what beer to put on the bar for you, bar was an interesting take on a red boat......beer list diverse but short, service was quick, food was great!!!! fish and chips (well a side caesar actually) was great as was the very generously sized burger,a and we had the steak and cheese bomb app which was also very good......so go, find this place and enjoy!!!!

Wow, I was blown away by this old school, "rustic" lodge. Mandy and Ken, the owners are some of the nicest people you'll meet. They know about the history of the area and more importantly, they seem to care about the customers. Sarah the bar tender was sweet as can be. Now, the food is delicious. Thick 10oz burger cooked to perfection, I believe on a sour dough bun. This place was a blast, will definitely be back on my next visit to beantown

Out of the way, ratty old hole in the wall bar with quality old style food. This is the place to take someone to impress with low down charm. Bring your darts and plan to chat for a while. Definitely on the list of places to check out.

  • Zachary T.

This place is a FIND that will have you in disbelief that you're still in Boston Metro West. A colleague was renting a house on the pond and had us over for dinner...we walked to the Chat afterwards....so hard to describe has a lakehouse lodge feel, but neighborhood bar vibe, all in the woods of Wayland. Absolutely need GPS to get there....it's a gem. Friendly staff, great views,...totally unique.

We stopped here after a round of golf in Wayland...we wanted burgers. This place has a great burger menu! The type of burgers where you can't be afraid of getting messy. The staff was really nice and waitress was a sweat heart. Nice view of a lake/pond. Its a hole in the wall feel, but chill place to have some good food and beer. Definitely will be going back.

What a great dive place for a beer or some solid pub food. Doesn't get any more authentic than this place. Thank goodness for google maps. It is hard to find.

The view is nice, the people watching is fantastic and the food is just ok. They do have cold beer though. Last time I was there, a table of 5-7 women were looking for trouble and giving another table of women a hard time. It was actually kind of scary... Burgers are meh. I love dive places like this, but the food here is just unremarkable.

Decided to try out this place after seeing it reviewed as one of the better places to get good tasting, fairly priced buffalo chicken wings. That review was spot-on as the Dudley Chateau does in fact have some very good tasting wings. (And the fries with the same buffalo sauce are fun too.) As others have noted, one does need either a GPS or good map skills to find this place, but that seems to be one of the draws of this place - unless you know about it, you'll never find it by chance. I've been there several times with my family (teenage kids). It is somewhat of a divey bar, no doubt, but I've been in enough real dive bars to say that this is fine for those who want to, and do bring their families with younger kids. Overall, it's very good bar food. They offer huge burgers, but also a very satisfying smaller version. Have tried some of their sandwiches, and those were also good. Beer selection, while not huge, is more than adequate. Service can be a bit spotty, but has always been friendly, and, while others seem to have had deal-breaking experiences with the wait-staff, we've never had a "we're never coming back here again" moment. So if you're up for a good, casual meal, in a place with the odd mix of an ordinary bar with a very nice view of a pond, then fire up your GPS and go.

It was a saturday evening, the goal was french fries. I recalled an episode of Chronicle that featured this former speakeasy in Cochituate overlooking a lake that had pretty good hamburgers. I thought where there are hamburgers there had to be fries... Took a bit of yelping and googling to find the address, punched it into the GPS and off we went. To say this place is off the beaten path is an understatement. You're not going to stumble upon this place easily, especially at night. From RT 27 the GPS turned us onto this small residential street, at the end of the street was a dimly lit parking lot with a small building at the end. Didn't see any real signage, followed the well worn path through the snow to a rather nondescript door. Once inside up this well worn stairway opening up into this warm inviting room where you could tell lots of drinking has been going on for a really long time. Apparently Babe Ruth and Ted Williams enjoyed drinking there. There were a few open tables so we grabbed one near the windows, apparently there is a great view over the lake but it being a dark night not much to see. The place is rather rustic, our table was made out of some boards and had a distinct lean to it, but it was clean and functioned as intended. It appeared only one waitress was working the whole room but she seem to be doing a fantastic job of keeping everyone happy. We had the Dudley Burger and the Grilled Hot Dog. The burger was juicy, cooked to order, the cheese looked as if it was thrown on as an afterthought, it should have been melted on burger while it was still on the grill and the two tiny pieces of bacon really didn't do it justice. The hot dog was crisp, my dining companion couldn't stop raving about the chili. THe onion rings and the fries were hot crisp and not greasy. For bar food I think it was pretty good and it was a fun place to have a beer... I will be returning.

My new favorite place. It's set right on the other side of Dudley pond, if we only had a boat we'd be there twice as fast! lol. I had fish and chips, delightful. The hubs had a burger, also delightful. Fantastic neighborhood bar and i'm psyched they have takeout. The prices are totally affordable and the staff is just how you want them to be - no funny business, super duper nice. I'm just lovin' it.

Haven't been there in years and please to find it unchanged, except for slight modernizations. Went there for lunch with a group of friends, one of whom as, like me, a veteran of the Raytheon Wayland days. Good food and portions and a nice selection of beers - always a requirement.

Divey pub with rustic charm and "locals" atmosphere. The food is decent (had the Dudley burger and fish tacos), the people are nice, and pond views are cool. I wouldn't make a special trip here, but if you're in the area, check it out!

The Chat is a diamond in the rough - the food is basic, but really good. The drink prices are very reasonable. It's a friendly neighborhood crowd, and the open mic on Wednesday nights is one of the best in metrowest. This place is great!

Been a while since I was here. Stopped in for a quick bite. 10 oz burgers always "seem " like a good idea but opted for the fish tacos. Excellent! Crisp, hot and just the right amount of "heat". Will be back soon.

Yummy burgers and okay draft selection: Harpoon, Sam Adams Seasonal, Wachusett, and a couple other offerings. Just dive-y enough, and dark but with well-placed TVs for sports viewing (Go Sox). Friendly service, too.

This is a great place! Burgers and beer, watched Olympics on the TV;s. Staff was great and excellent sense of humor. Burgers were as good as they get. Try the Buffalo wings (mild-medium) were plentiful and deep fried. Salads were excellent with turkey tips for those who did not want the burgers. Don't let the location getting there steer you away! On the lake and the bar is shaped like a boat. Our new stop in Metro West!!!

Love this place. Don't be discouraged by the exterior and the dive bad atmosphere. Cheap beer and drinks and delicious food. Burgers are delicious and cooked to order. They have a blue cheese stuffed burger which is to die for. With each bite you get a a taste of the yummy blue cheese. Burgers are flavorful and juicy. Fries are crispy. Onion rings are another great option- flavorful and crisp. View is pretty as the restaurant is right on Dudley pond.

I was contacted by the owner about a month ago about my review and was asked to come back in. My husband and I went last night for dinner and met with her, we discussed what happened and she apologized. She invited us to stay for dinner and we did ordering the steak tips. I have to say the tips were the best we've had, we also had a different waitress who was very nice. Just a footnote, in the past they didn't seem to have a full bar (the margaritas were pre-made in one bottle) I noticed last night a complete bar and decided to try a margarita which Liz the bartender made. I'm a margarita snob but the one I received last night was pretty close to perfect. Now not only is the food good great but the drinks. We will definitely be going back.

Love that burger! Delicious and greasy - yummmm. I had the Happy Hollow burger - swiss and mushroom. My wife had Village burger - peppers, mushrooms and onions. My daughter had the Cowboy burger - cheese and bbq sauce. All were perfectly cooked - ohhh so good. For apps we had onion rings and chicken tenders. The rings were decent and the tenders were surprisingly good. Waitress was very good and the prices are reasonable. We need to go there more often.

Old school dive. Worth the visit. You can decide if it suits your taste or not. Early crowd is family friendly and shifts over the evening. Utterly un-pretentious. A reminder of old Wayland. Certainly not a generic chain restaurant.

Went there last night to sing Christmas carols with my parents and their friends ended up staying til last call. It was a good crowd of people and a lot of fun to see some friends I hadn't seen in awhile. I drank blue moon, but they had other good options like Sam winter on tap. It was a little more expensive than I expected because I am in college but normal price for a beer. I didn't eat food. I went there early this year in the summer and it was dead so it was nice to see it packed.

We decided to give this place a try after reading all of the rave reviews..and who doesn't like a great dive bar? The place was pretty busy when we arrived...but luckily we found a small table by the door. It took the waitress quite a while to get to us..she was working the whole room by herself. And pouring drinks. Apparently someone called in sick and she was alone. The juke box was blasting out country western songs and people at the bar were singing along. The place was pretty loud and hard to hear over the background noise. We eventually got our drinks and was able to order our food about 15 minutes later. We had the 'gourmet' onion rings, chili, and fish tacos. I think our order got screwed up because the wrong food was delivered to the table and then the waitress was back at the computer placing another order...which came out 20 minutes later. There really wasn't anything gourmet about the onion rings ($8.00) although they were hot and crispy and arrived with three dipping sauces (bbq, honey mustard and chipolte mayo). The chili was bland and tasteless, nothing a little tabasco couldn't fix. The fish tacos were good and had a nice sauce and relish with them. The juke box had some interesting songs and the locals (male & female) were playing, and singing along with, music from Flashdance, Grease, and Whitney Houston. Quite the show.

Cheap beers. Good food. Friendly waitresses, who are patient with my toddler. I love coming here. I've only been for lunch (see above toddler), but it's always been great. The fish and chips came out hot and flaky. The burgers (mini) are a great size and always perfectly cooked. I usually get the onion rings, and they never disappoint. The "regular" sized burgers are huge, but worth it if you're starving or want to skip your next meal. I can't say what the dinner / night scene is like, but if you want a good lunch The Chat is a great option.

After a long day at my job as a girl Friday, I ganged up at this juke with my virgie friends (except one, she'd been here before). I must say it was quite the dilly, but not quite the same as I imagine it once was. More tellys and less mojo. It would have been better if it harkened back, for me. The sports theme was a bit schmaltzy. But this was anything but a flopperoo! Hot damn! It was sure swell in here. We were all slap-happy with our food and our drinks and I was a bit starry-eyed over a certain fella who was full of oomph. This fella and I shared a burger that was full of pizzazz (and blue cheese, yum) and, whammo! The fries were great too. Some of the gang ordered fancy-schmancy drinks and were a bit in a snit about them. But I said "don't be cheesed! That's just a lot of malarkey; this isn't a fancy-schmancy kind of place!" This is no clip-joint either; it's as inexpensive as it is delicious, and that's good, especially with drinks, since I can be a bit of a swigger. So leave your up-dos and hepster gear at home and head over to the Dudley Chateu. Sure, it looks sketchy from the outside. But, why, jeepers, it sure is killer-diller inside!

come prepared to eat because the portions are huge (and yummy). Since moving out west, this replaces my previous favorite burger joint (R F O'Sullivans in Somerville) - proximity makes the difference here and O'Sullivans is just a bit better.

One of the best dives I've ever been to! Complete hidden gem in the middle of the side streets. You've got to make a trip here if you haven't. They are known for their burgers but I have only enjoyed the buffalo chicken salad because its to die for! Waitress both times was a complete sweetheart and personable. Cute place to enjoy a drink or dinner with a nice view of the lake!

This place is like a hidden treasure. If it weren't for my friends in Wayland, I would never have discovered this great pub/restaurant! I love the food, the ambiance :) and I can take my kids there! I have only been a handful of times, but it is worth checking out and I WILL be back.

Don't go here if you're expecting a normal sit down meal. Go here if you want a burger and a beer and I guarantee you'll love it. There's no place like the chat. This is the place where your dollar will stretch farther than you'd ever believe

  • Kristi L.

    I. Love. This.

Classic dive bar, but steeped in baseball history, good beer, and actually really good food. I don't give the 5 stars lightly; The Chat is perfect for what it is.

  • Kristen B.

Some call it divey I see rustic charm! Been coming here for years. Great place for a cold beer, appetizers and KENO. Nice views and I see people of all ages even families with young kids. Good kiddie menu. And yes don't go in a rush.

  • Chris C.

    (3)
  • Dawn B.

  • Jeannette L.

No fancy menu but it was good. And the price is right! It feels a bit of a dive bar but with a friendly atmosphere. Great place to have a beer and a meal. I like my chicken tips, my coworker got a good lookin burger. Service was also great.

  • Dan K.

Hidden gem in the blandness of metro Boston. Has genuine character. Good burgers and cocktails.

    (5)
  • Gonzalo P.

I really loved the atmosphere and they have some really nice seats with a view of the lake. This place can be really hard to find, unless you have a GPS. Food was average, we had chicken wings and burgers and they were not as good as other places. This is a fun place to have a beer, hangout with friends and be with all your buddies

    (3)
  • Jon P.

The cowboy burger is delicious, they also have a Mac and cheese burger special that is very good. If you go there definitely also try the buffa-que tenders or wings which are half and half bbq and buffalo. Highly recommend all of their food. Beer selection is great. Great place to eat, and grab a beer.

    (5)
  • Shawn W.

    (3)
  • Lori S.

It took 15 minutes go get our check, because she decided to take a break and go outside.

lunch recently....yes it is way out of the way in wayland, yes it is a BAR, yes it does sit on a pretty pond, yes it is old.....was built in 1923 according to the very busy waitress and it looks like it has been kept original (old).....place got busy pretty quickly as we watched the fisherman trolling around the pond, here it seems they do know your name and probably what beer to put on the bar for you, bar was an interesting take on a red boat......beer list diverse but short, service was quick, food was great!!!! fish and chips (well a side caesar actually) was great as was the very generously sized burger,a and we had the steak and cheese bomb app which was also very good......so go, find this place and enjoy!!!!

  • Andrew H.

  • R P.

Out of the way, ratty old hole in the wall bar with quality old style food. This is the place to take someone to impress with low down charm. Bring your darts and plan to chat for a while. Definitely on the list of places to check out.

    (5)
  • Zachary T.

This place is a FIND that will have you in disbelief that you're still in Boston Metro West. A colleague was renting a house on the pond and had us over for dinner...we walked to the Chat afterwards....so hard to describe has a lakehouse lodge feel, but neighborhood bar vibe, all in the woods of Wayland. Absolutely need GPS to get there....it's a gem. Friendly staff, great views,...totally unique.

    (4)
  • Frank A.

  • Eric M.

Haven't been there in years and please to find it unchanged, except for slight modernizations. Went there for lunch with a group of friends, one of whom as, like me, a veteran of the Raytheon Wayland days. Good food and portions and a nice selection of beers - always a requirement.

Outstanding bar. Good beer, food, and atmosphere. All types here, from investors to unemployed "dudes." Great once a month open mic.

Divey pub with rustic charm and "locals" atmosphere. The food is decent (had the Dudley burger and fish tacos), the people are nice, and pond views are cool. I wouldn't make a special trip here, but if you're in the area, check it out!

A great little place where you'd least expect it. Great local atmosphere & a fun bar to hang at. We stop in after doing street rides and enjoy it greatly. Haven't had the food yet so look for an upddate soon!

Yummy burgers and okay draft selection: Harpoon, Sam Adams Seasonal, Wachusett, and a couple other offerings. Just dive-y enough, and dark but with well-placed TVs for sports viewing (Go Sox). Friendly service, too.
