Such a delicious eatery with cheap prices. The waitress was very attentive throughout our visit, serving us extra water when our glass was still 3/4 of the way full. The restaurant was clean and pleasantly decorated. The kimchi was crisp and fresh. The seafood sundubu was absolutely delicious: fresh clams and chewy shrimp. The only caveat was it was on the spicy side: a "mild" was probably two spiciness levels up. Good for spicy food lovers!

Good food and attentive service at fair prices. We had a table of five for a work lunch (only a few other tables were occupied at 1 p.m. on a Thursday though). I had the mango curry with tofu and it was quite tasty - mango is a nice addition to give a sweet counterpoint to a yellow curry. Pretty presentation too - with a carrot flower garnish at the edge of the plate. Mango curry is listed as one red pepper as far as spiciness goes, and it was right on. Two other people in our party had the crazy noodles, which they liked, but felt it was hotter in some parts than one pepper, which they asked for, like it had been blended with another batch that was hotter, since the dish is on the menu as three peppers hot. The miso soup, which came with every dish, was a decent starter; a fairly bland broth was livened up with tiny tofu cubes and chopped scallion. Overall, a nice lunch experience - we need a new regular Asian place on Moody Street since Erawan of Siam, our haunt of several years, has closed. Lunch with tip for five was about $60.

Just got back from lunch with my boyfriend! We had Tom Yum soup and it was delicious. Tasted just like how I remembered it from Thailand. I had crab rangoons as well, which were pretty good, but I probably would order other items. They brought me some miso soup on the house! I had tofu pad thai and it was spectacular. I ordered it super spicy and they delivered. My boyfriend ordered the "Wild Boar Basil" and it was fantastic. Seriously wonderful. The wait staff is so kind. We will definitely be back when we're craving Thai food!

Had delivery while at a friends house. Ordered the chicken Pho - not impressed. Where's the spicy sauce? Can you include some non-weird pieces of chicken too? Ugh. The gyoza were also gummy.

I came here to eat by myself one night, (not by choice, I travel for work). The service was ok, but the food was so good that I just had to bring my husband when he came to visit. The service was waaaay better the second time around and the waitress even gave us a sampler of a new dish that they had just put on the menu. Everything was delicious as expected and we will definitely be coming back again before we leave Massachusetts.

Came here hungry after browsing More Than Words nearby. We were immediately greeted and seated after entering, and there was a light crowd with many tables open. Service was quick and efficient with the waitress asking us what we want to for drinks and then coming to check if we were ready. While I came in here looking to have Korean dishes, they do not have a wide selection. Many of the dishes are fusion and a combination of other East and South Asian influences. I do love how spicy they make their chicken, though! It's clean, quiet, and food was delicious despite not seeing what I wanted in the first place.

Food is fantastic and service was very polite. Whole restaurant smells of jasmine. The Wild Boar Basil dish was excellent and used some old Thai spices that aren't common in many Thai restaurants, such as fresh green peppercorn on the vine! Tom Yum soup was very delicious with super tender and juicy chicken.

Everything we had was delicious. Sat off hours there was one other customer in the restaurant. Staff were nice and attentive. the food did take awhile but because it was all made fresh to order so no complaints there. So deliciousness: miso soup, crispy squid skewers, korean style fried chicken drumsticks spicy glaze, French fries, and the fancy pineapple pork. The fried chicken was as good as bonchon, which was a big surprise. Not rock your world, but wholly satisfying and worth a trip back.

We had a Groupon for Tom Can Cook, so we gave it a try. I wish I could give 4 stars for food and 2.5 for service, but I will average it out around 3 stars. We arrived for an early dinner (Moody Street can be scary late at night) and were only one of two couples in the restaurant. We have learned that an empty restaurant rarely translates to fast service, even though you would think so. We were seated right away, but were not approached by our waitress for about 10 minutes. When she did come to the table she asked if we wanted water and left, even though we were ready to order our appetizer. There was quite a language barrier so asking questions about the food was an exercise in futility. Bottom line: The food was very good, the service not so much. I would suggest take out vs. dining in.

I've ordered from Tom Can Cook a few times. It's either hit or miss. When it's good it's really really good, and when it's bad it's bad. The green tea latte is always delicious. The house rice is great when it's done right, and is full of different veggies and meats. The chicken teriyaki could be better, and the glazed wings are crispy and spicy! Take out takes forever so I suggest pick up. All in all Toms is good.

Great place to come and get dinner I'm Vietnamese but Tom's pho remind me of my mothers it's been a while since I had some really good pho. Took me back to my childhood where my mom made pho every Sunday. The atmosphere is amazing the wait staff was great and the owner can't speak enough about him. I would recommend anyone who is in Waltham looking for a good restaurant to not be shy and stop into Toms. Tom you defiantly won yourself a new customer see you next time.

Had crab Rangoon, Calimari sticks and spring rolls. I ordered fine online the the eat/24 app gave me 50min wait. I walked into the restaurant no one was in there wtf! The rangoons were tough everything else was fine but overall disappointed cus there was plenty of wait staff when we went to pick up and online ordering was a sham besides hard crab rangoons

I don't know what other people are taking about. This place is great. The food is good, the prices are reasonable, staff is a little slow with English, but who cares? We stopped in on a whim, and it was the perfect no frills Asian food place. I'm not looking to spend a fortune, and I'm not looking for a server who is always at our table "checking in". Everyone at my table enjoyed themselves, and really, there's not much more you can ask for.

  • Brian S.

Nothing too spectacular when I came here with a few friends. The order took forever to come out and the food didn't stand out for anything whatsoever. Though, the title said fusion, this is definitely low class when it comes to fusion. The only reason I gave this place three stars is because I consider this place a low-quality/ high-choice restaurant. They do have a lot of choices with a decent price. I'd go here for a cheap lunch but not for a great dinner.

Came here. I was starving. Got seated right away. Got the Pad Thai and my friend did as well. The portion was alright, I wish it was bigger. The noodles were perfectly cooked and it came with generous amounts of peanuts and bean sprouts. I wish there was more chicken and shrimp though but oh well. It definitely hit the spot for about $10. Tom can definitely cook.

Overall food: the food is ok, with lot of variety to choose. Food takes a long time to come, but half of the dishes is not warm enough. Services: not as good, due to not enough waiters. When we ask to warm up the cold fried rice, we got stare by the waiter. What we order: Fried Coconut Calamari: the flour won't stick on the squid, the sauce is good, but the food is cold when it serve Crispy Pad Thai: good crispy noodle. Pineapple Fried Rice: ok dish, but the food is cold when it serve Beef, Shrimp Noodle Soup: big bowl of soup noodle, but they give me the wrong noodle.

I found myself in Waltham, Mass on a Thursday to meet a couple of people. they chose Tom Can Cook at 374 Moody Street. I am an extremely picky eater and usually order all the safe food at every restaurant I go to or even do not eat at all. I never had Asian Fusion food before. Tom Bos the owner came over and sat me down. He asked me my preferences when I eat out and what I like in general to eat at home. He suggested Special Pineapple chicken. It was Amazing. I called my wife and told her what I was eating and she couldn't believe I was in love with Tom's food. Tom prepares all of his food fresh to order. Tom is an amazing cook and an amazing person also. I couldn't put the food down. I live 58 minutes away by car and plan on returning at least once per month. This food changed my pallet forever. I ordered the same dish for my wife as take out and she was blown away with the complexity of the flavors and the technique Tom Can Cook provides for all of their customers. If I could I would eat there every meal, every day. This food was fabulous and the best I have ever eaten. You must try this food or you will be denying yourself an amazing experience. I would give Tom Can Cook 10 stars if I could. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing food and service. Very clean and a great restaurant for all. Tom You are the man. You can Cook. You put everything into your food and the product shows just how much you love to cook. I WILL BE BACK AGAIN, OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. TOM CAN COOK IS AN AWESOME PLACE TO EAT.

I got take out here the other day. The woman on the phone didn't really speak english really well so be patient. I got the Duck noodle bowl and was excited to get it because you had so many choices in noodles. You can get rice noodles, egg noodles, vermicelli, and cellophane noodles. I ordered mine with cellophane noodles. When I got home, I opened my container and guess what noodles they put in there? Well it wasn't cellophane noodles. It was vermicelli. It even said cellophane on the ticket they gave me. I was disappointed by that because that was not what I ordered. But besides that, the broth and the rest of the soup was pretty good. Portions were big. I would probably try this place again. Hopefully they get my order correct next time.

Terrible lunch today. Popped in on a whim and ordered the wonton soup and the spicy basil with chicken and brown rice. Let's just say the brown rice was the highlight of the meal. Soup was disgusting -- like an oil slick. No flavor whatsoever. The spicy basil...not spicy at all -- almost sweet. And the chicken was barely cooked. The server could have cared less if it was good...she didn't bother asking. So all in all, with tip, I dropped over $15 for a terrible lunch. Tom Cannot Cook. Never again.

Tom can make some very attractive looking takeout menu's, but when it comes to service in the restaurant, he doesn't make it all that pleasant. I came here with a group of three others, and while the server was polite, she seemed overwhelmed (though the restaurant wasn't even 1/2 full.) We started with the crab rangoon, which were decent but the entrees took far too long to come out. Two of us got them, and the other two had to wait about 20 minutes for ours. My Rard Nah was soupy, and the noodles were overcooked. The only memorable part of the meal was the Thai Iced Tea, which I will give them credit for. For Rard Nah though, Baan Thai all the way baby.

Amazing food and service. The taste is outstanding and is exactly what I expected from an "authentic" Thai kitchen. Tom's Pad Thai is recommended !

Sad experience. Terrible food, bored inattentive service, even terrible music. Really a disappointing experience. Maybe takeout is better, but what they call chicken I wouldn't feed to my worst enemy. My reccomendayion: anywhere else on Moody. Tom, time to prove that you can cook.

  • Sierra S.

The service here is wonderful - they are kind, attentive, and remember regulars. The Thai tea with bubbles is the best around. Be sure to try the crispy pad Thai or chicken teriyaki. One of moody street's best lunch places!

Last night was one of those nights where, as you leave an event, you start out thinking that you're leaving with a small group. Then the group grows steadily larger and larger with each goodbye said. Eventually, you're not getting dinner with 4 friends (a solid group size to start) but instead, 11 (for a grand total of 12). Not only did the size of our group require accommodating, but we also had at least 2 or 3 people who have food allergies. One in particular, recently discovered that she is allergic to soy and peanuts, which is a big deal if you're at a Thai restaurant. Our group showed up about an hour before closing, and was overjoyed that the Tom Can Cook staff was willing and able to seat our large group - without a reservation - and quickly too! We were also ecstatic when they were able to make any dish on the menu to order, so that our friends could have more than just plain steamed rice and vegetables. All of our food came at the same time, piping hot and absolutely delicious. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and by 10:59 (an hour after walking through the door) we had our bill in hand, and our leftovers in to-go boxes (we even got a student discount!!). Plus the cherry on top of it all - their prices are Very approachable, especially considering their portion sizes. This was personally my second time at Tom Can Cook, and I have to say that both experiences (especially the most recent) will have me coming back for more, for a long time!

I really like that you can come here with a group of friends who just can't decide whether they want Chinese, Thai, or Korean for dinner! Their Pad Thai is one of the best in the area. Their desserts, such as mango sticky rice, and Thai Iced Tea are home-runs. You should also try their curries. Speedy take-out and delivery always a plus.

Two strikes.... you're out. Our last visit in the restaurant was miserable. Service was terrible, slow and neglectful. Food was ok, just ok. Left feeling frustrated. Last night we ordered delivery via folder and it was a serious disappointment. We received our food an hour and a half after ordering - it was so cold it wasn't even warm. The entrees had cooled such that we had to microwave them to make them edible. My entree was disappointing and almost sad. Our cold crab rangoon was just ok. They were out of fresh rolls so we also paid for an appetizer we didn't even receive. When I called back to complain we were told they'd discount a *future* order for us. I don't think I'll bother. I think that was my last time spending money to be disappointed there.

  • Julianna P.

amazing! the crab rangoons are perfect, just enough to not get too full so that you can really enjoy the main course!.. my family and I come out all the time from boston.. tom can cook is the only place that I go to in waltham! We enjoy the pineapple fried rice, the pad thai, the peanut sauce is made there not out of a bottle!, the tamarind chicken is great! and they offer brown rice if thats your thing!

So pleased with my order this evening from Tom Can Cook! I have Celiac Disease, so I called ahead to check about gluten free accommodations. I planned to order online for delivery since I had to work late, so they gave me a few recommendations and assured that they can adapt if I specify in the preparation notes in the web-order. I ordered Chicken Soup Bowl with rice noodles, and the Seaweed Salad. I wrote in the notes my request for gluten free preparation, and, if it was not possible to accommodate, alternative options to switch in. They delivered promptly less than an hour later, 30 minutes before their ETA. The delivery lady was so sweet and reassured without me even asking again that it my gluten free order. It really gave me peace of mind knowing that even the delivery person knew about the situation. It's nice to think that she was present for the food prep also, and cared about the food prep through the delivery until it reached my hungry belly! The food was delicious, and seemed very fresh and not all greasy. Thanks a lot!!

Tom definitely CAN cook! This is my go to place for Tom Yam soup, I usually order 2-3 of them. The price is fair and the menu is "family friendly".

  • D S.

I have been here twice and had take out once - I am planning to come back to sample other dishes on their wide menu! Interesting to see some poor reviews here, I have always been pleased. Prices seem competitive for the neighborhood. I will be back. And you should try it too!

Tom Can Cook is a regular stop for my wife and me before a movie down the street. The food is consistently good, although as others have said, the service is not consistent. You may have to flag someone down to get your check... Its worth it to us to have great noodle soups (we get the seafood or the chicken with fresh rice noodles), great fried noodles (Pad Thai or Crazy Noodle), good green curry and good stir fry dishes at a very reasonable price. The decor is informal - brightly colored booths and tables with hanging lights over them. I wish they didn't have a TV at the end of the room - its distracting. Still, for good, fast, fresh food, TCC is a good one.

    (4)
  • Chuck H.

TCC has consistenly the best asian fusion food on Moody. Tom is in fact the cook and takes care to use fresh vegetables cooked just right with authentic thai, korean, japanese and chinese broths/sauces as part of the varied menu. Crazy noodles is a favorite, but soups and other rice/noodle dishes are cooked with care and delicious. Service isnt the fastest, but acceptable.

    (5)
  • Sean F.

I'm a repeat customer here, although I have to admit that I always order either crazy noodles or pad thai, along with the chicken satay as an appetizer. I really love all three dishes. I have always had very pleasant experiences here. One time I left my credit card behind and the waiter actually chased me up the street to return it to me. The restaurant isn't fancy and probably doesn't compare to something you might get in Boston. But as Waltham goes, it's a great Thai/Asian Fusion option!

    (5)
  • Emily M.

Ehh. More like Tom CAN"T Cook. Service is slow, and I was there early - there was only one other table. Food was hot when it arrived, but bland. It left a lot to be desired. I gave 2 stars because the staff was nice, prices were reasonable, seemed clean and had decent decor. I don't plan on going back though. Also wine and beer only.

  • Edith K.

I have only gotten take out here during my Bentley days so I can't speak much about the restaurant itself. The food is delicious, I usually get Vietnamese entrees, 95% of the time it is pho. I also think how they package the pho is very considerate, packaging the noodles, soup base, meat and bean sprout/lime/etc. separate.

    (4)
  • E K.

It was a tell-tale when you walk into a restaurant and it is completely empty. I'm going to get straight to the point. This is American-Thai cuisine, but they did say that by considering its 'fusion' to begin with. Medium spicy = very spicy (according to my Asian tastebuds, so it's probably worse for others). Chicken was completely tasteless (I know its steamed, but hey, at least steam it with some salt?) and was quite tough too. Seriously, $13 for a plate of fried noodles with 4 shrimps? I think it was pricy for what it was - considering food/ambience/service and all. The service was good, but the servers hardly come by and check at what you need. They also didn't come by to see if everything was okay. I probably won't be visiting here again.

  • Kristin C.

I eat lunch here about 3 times a week. Veggie pad thai all the way. I am well versed in the world of pad thai, and I have to say...Toms is my favorite. I'm a huge fan of Thai restaurants that actually use peanut sauce in their pad thai, and not just crushed up peanuts. I always ask for extra on the side too. The wait staff is really sweet, and always takes care of us. You can also find the actual Tom in the restaurant, I'm pretty sure he does a lot of the cooking. Really genuine guy that knows how to treat his guests.

  • Brian B.

I'm so disappointed to see low ratings! I love this place. Everything I have ever ordered has been perfect. I work nearby. I have ever only got delivery (which is a little expensive to meet their $15 minimum +$2 delivery charge) but love everything about the food I have got. They take the time to make delivery presentation perfect. There aren't many places that will garnish delivery with nice accents. I have yet to be disappointed with my choices. Delivery always comes with in the time they say, usually sooner. Suggestions: Spicy noodles with Chicken and Shrimp. Fresh crispy rolls with peanut sauce. Thai Iced Tea! So good. Again, only had delivery, can't comment on appearance of the shop, or face to face service.

  • Evan R.

If you lowered all their prices by 10-15% I would give them 4 stars. Nothing really bothered me... service was good.... appetizers were GREAT, actually.... but nothing knocked me out and said "Come back here for this!" Then I got the check, and my friend and I were like "Yeah, we're probably not gonna come here often." Not a horrible rip off, because the setting is nice enough for a date or something... but way too much for me. If you want a wide selection, then give them a shot. Otherwise, you can do better.

Love the Chicken pad thai - service was good. Price was good we got a lot of food and happy with all of it.

We stopped by for an early dinner at 5. The place was deserted but when we left people were coming in. This place was a lot more trendy and crowded a few years ago but we thought it was worth a shot. We were planning on dessert at Lizzies. :) Service was good, a hot day so we drank a lot of water and it was quickly refilled and refreshing. Also had thai iced tea. Appetizers: Steamed shumi, very good. They used to have a nice mustard sauce for this... new sauce ok but not as amazing as I recalled. Chicken wings, basic but well done. Miso soup was miso soup, very good. Entrees: Very nice yellow curry chicken, and excellent squid disco and chili catfish. Kids loved eating the carrot curl garnishes like spaghetti. :) It was nice when they packed up the leftovers they gave us more rice to go with it. I'm glad we went back, and will go again!

I encouraged my family to try this restaurant because I had gone a while back and thought that the Pad Thai was great. Unfortunately my experiene was not so good this time. My daughter got the Pad Thai and it lacked peanuts . I got the Chili fish. It was plenty spicy but, like the Pad Thai, it lacked the peanuts, as well (peanutswere in the description of the dish). What really annoyed me and got me to write this review was the service. My food-came twenty five minutes after everyone else. The waitress noted the problem after everyone's food came and was sitting there getting cold, waiting for mine to arrive. She finally went in back to the kitchen and came out to tell me that the cook forgot to make mine. So I waited for my meal while everyone else ate. They brought the bill and took not even the rice off for their faux pax. I told the waitress that I was pretty outraged and all she said was sorry. I can't say I would go back. The food was just not good enough to tolerate the lack of customer servie.

I have been eating here for years, since I live right around the corner off of Moody Street, and I love it. I always order the crispy chicken pad thai - it is regular pad thai, served with crispy chicken and sweet and sour dipping sauce. This was a special maybe 5 years ago, and I continue to order it even though it's no longer on the menu. Just ask, and they will do it for you. The crab rangoon, dumplings and steamed spring rolls are all very good, and I love getting shirley temples to drink, reminds me of being a little kid. My fiance really likes the bibim bob's, he has tried more of the "authentic" food and tends to think it is better in the restaurant rather than takeout, for whatever reason.

Tom can cook - can he? Average Thai in town. Bland pad thai - the spicy noodle dish was anything but. Erawan in front is far better.

  • Melissa B.

Poor Tom....So many negative reviews. I didn't find this place too too bad, so I'm going to cop out and give it three stars. It's a bit expensive for what it is. My chinese take out staple, Asia Wok, is cheaper and tastier. BUT the Crazy Noodles and Pineapple Chicken we ordered weren't bad. I'd say they were pretty tasty, actually. Plus one for charming servers. Minus one for playing Fox News. Everything here just kind of cancels each other out. I'm sure there are a ton of dishes I could school Tom in, but Chinese cuisine ain't one of em, so he gets bonus points for my own cooking inadequacies. But it's very so-so. It should def be renamed "Tom Can Cook Chinese Better You But Not Better Than The Chinese Place Down The Road." If that's too long, how about "Tom Can Cook MEH." Either would look awesome on an awning. Maybe Santa will bring him a new awning for Christmas.

  • Joanna C.

They have redeemed themselves to three stars! Although... service was lackadaisical at best. They are so eager to please, and yet... they didn't really come by to see how we were doing much during our meal. I ordered the Korean Bibimbap with brown rice in a hot stone pot... there's nothing more comforting than hot sizzling rice and veggies and spicy sauce mixed into a yummy yummy jumble of goodness. Also ordered a side of kimchee, since I can't have Korean food without it. (It's like eating a hamburger without ketchup!) They let me know about five minutes before they brought us our entrees that they ran out of kimchee. :( Sad face! I almost ran out to the Korean place down the street to buy a side to bring back, but thought that would be a. rude and b. too time consuming. And c. yeah, I am just a lazy lazy bum. The food was warm and satisfying and just good good good. But nothing crazy good nor exceptional.

Average food, slow service. Went for a Saturday lunch. Place was empty, not what you would expect in a highly rated restaurant. Although we were the only two people there, the food took long to arrive. I asked for my dish to be without any fish-oil, but the dish smelled of it! Not visiting again.

Tom CAN cook, but the service is awful. Waited a half hour to pay the bill, and they never came to the table after food was dropped.

  • Yoonie C.

One visit with a friend was pretty solid. Pad thai was good. Afterward, I was craving duck noodle soup. "Duck noodle soup" was all I sang for 3 days, trying to get me some. But whenever I called, no one picked up. And I definitely tried calling at "off-peak" times, say, 2pm on a Saturday... and to top it off, whenever I walk in, I hear their phone ring and no one answers it. Seriously... why would you ignore calls from potential customers who want to PAY you to get some food? Last I checked, that was how restaurants worked. Damn, Tom, maybe you can cook, but you sure don't pick up a phone.

    (2)
  • Marcy L.

Ugh! LOVE it! BEST noodles in Waltham, hands down! A wild selection in a lively setting. Not a full bar, but there is a nice wine selection. I highly suggest Tom's Spicy Rolls and Crab Rangoon for starters. Pine Nut Exotic, Mango Curry, and Yaki Soba dishes are fabulous!!! The staff is very friendly and they're open pretty late on the weekend. Prices are acceptable, especially considering the quality and quantity you're getting (you can get two meals easily out of one dish).

  • K. M. P.

Not bad at all. For our lunch, my dining companion was up for soup (one of his favorites, the Beef Soup Bowl); I had the Special Plate (crispy chicken on broccoli). It was a quiet day, service was good and the setting was nice. I'd characterize the vibe as fairly warm. Not a life altering experience - but no disappointment either.

Rudest waiter I have ever encountered! Food was not all that bad... Although it came out kind of slow considering that we were the only table in the entire restaurant. Waiter was short and hard to understand... He came by twice early on to fill up our drinks and then didn't come back again... until it was time to pay. As soon as we signed our credit slips, the waiter rushed back to our table to pick up everyones checks. Then he disappeared to the back again, without asking any of us if we need anything else. He then reappeared just once more, to ask us how the service was... As soon as we responded that it was fine (which was a stretch), he pulled out the credit slip one of one of the people in our party and started complaining loudly about the tip he received. He actually put the check back on the table and tapped on it with his pen yelling "This is not good enough tip!" Everyone at the table was stunned... And before we could even gather ourselves to say anything back, he disappeared into the back again and stayed there until we left. Tom might be able to cook, but he also needs to learn how to hire halfway decent people. Needless to say, we are done with this place.

Ate here again today - and I seem to be having very good luck with them since so many people on here seem to have had a bad experience here. I had a takeout order of crab rangoon and their Tom Noodle Bowl (just called Tom's Bowl). Usually I wouldnt write an update, but one thing I was really impressed with (other than the rangoon - which is always superb) was that they boxed all the ingredients for the soup bowl separately. There is nothing worse than ordering a soup bowl take out and then getting home to find it a pile of mush. This allowed me to portion it out perfectly and make several meals out of it.

The portions are far too small for what you're paying. The food can be generously described as mediocre. The banana smoothie I paid $4.50 for was more like icy banana water. Their Thai iced tea and coffee were good, so... there's that.

I have to say, I was really disappointed after seeing so many solid reviews. The food was meh for sure. The appetizers were pretty good actually(Tom's crispy rolls, vegetarian triangles, tofu tempura, tofu fuji). However, our entrees were pad thai and pad see eaw and they were both somewhat chewy and with odd flavors. The service was even worse. We had to ask for water three times, and only got it after our appetizers. The entrees took forever to come out as well, and even just getting our leftovers boxed up. I don't know if I hit it on bad night, but after the experience, I am not inclined to try it again.

Don't trust fusion restaurants like this. Consider changing the name to Tom Can't Cook.

Overall, I thought Tom Can Cook was an average restaurant. They have a large selection of dishes but seem to focus on more Thai inspired fare. The decor was pretty nice, simple but still more than you'd find in a hole in the wall. Based on the restaurant's exterior, I thought it'd have a bright, overly commercial interior but it was a bit more intimate. I'm not a big fan of asian fusion or menus with multiple cuisines. I ordered the Spicy Tender Chicken ($13) which was good. The was a good mix of veggies and chicken. A couple of minor points; I thought the prik pao sauce of the dish was too sweet and seemed more like a peanut sauce. The dish also wasn't spicy hot enough. Finally, the chicken had much more dark meat pieces than white which isn't that big of a deal but I hated the couple of large chucks of fat I bit into. Rice doesn't come with the dish and needs to be ordered separately. They do have brown rice ($2) which I prefer. The dish was good though and I'd probably focus on the thai dishes here. My wife's crazy noodles tasted delicious and she really loved eating here. I'd definitely some noodles dishes here.

Personally I was not impressed with this place. I guess I prefer my Asian food to not taste so Americanized. I thought it was overpriced for what it was and not all that good tasting either. I've definitely had better food in Waltham.

Tom can cook have a lot of choices of food such as Chinese, Thai, Japanese. They also have drinks such as hot saki. If you and your friend can't decide If you want eat Chinese or Thai tonight. You can try this resturant. Each of you can get what you want with a resonable price.

Sorry Tom, not a fan. Been here once, and don't plan on returning. Lots of items to choose from on the menu, so maybe we picked all the bad ones??? Noodles were gross mush, sauces just didn't taste right. My drink was ok though.

I worked across the street at Gourmet Pottery for a few years. The gracious owner and I would split an order of Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls and Fried Tofu for lunch. Together, the two appetizers were perfect for us and provided protein and veggies. Plus, they were very fresh. A friend and I gave the young man who ran (is it still in operation?) the bookstore on Moody Street a gift certificate for TCK when he celebrated his business' 2nd anniversary and he appreciated the present. Once, TCK mixed up an order and gave us crispy Pad Thai. It was good. Another time, I branched out and had something that might have been called Lemon Fried Chicken. Fresh and full of veggies, unlike American fast food. However, it did not please me . . . That said, I am not a fan of Asian food. Asian grazers may love it! In my personal life, I have been involved with men who insisted that a meal out was either Chinese, Thai or Vietnamese . . . foods that I would prefer to eat not more than once a year. As a single-again woman I am happy NOT to have to own a bottle of soy sauce. TGK does not produce the greasy fried food of run of the mill store front Chinese restaurants. The food is not drowning in brown sauce. It is fresh and it is filled with veggies. Is it a place to celebrate an anniversary or birthday? No. But it is a nice place to stop for something wholesome while shopping or seeing a movie on Moody Street. Value that! Places where you can shop, eat and see movies without getting into a car are becoming increasing rare. Waltham is worth the visit and Tom Can Cook is fine.

Tom Can cook? Apparently not that well PROS: Food's ok...I've had better asian food elsewhere. Pad Thai is Bad Thai. The Bi bim bap was ok but not impressive. CONS: Food isnt that great. Wait staff is so slow, c'mon people...inject your jugular with some liquified Gingko and practice the swift tiger crane style technique of making & serving delicious and flavorful food...extolled by the restaurants in China Town and other places. Even PF Chang's does a better job than Tom. Bottom line: Tom Can't Cook

Certainly the best Thai restaurant in Waltham and its right on Moody st. Really delicious items with fresh vegetables. The Bim Bim Bab is fantastic (best with brown rice). Also a perfect take out place. Very very reasonable prices. Its never very busy which makes it look less alluring but don't be fooled this is a great place.

some one seriously needs to let Tom know he can't cook.. this place is pitiful, they attempt to provide thai, korean, chinese, and many other asian dishes to potential patrons.. perhaps in there attempt to provided such a variety of cuisines they were unable to focus on taste... Everything was bland and at some points just inedible... the name is defiantly deceiving... maybe Tom can paint, sing, dance, or even juggle... but Cook defiantly not!!!!

I'm really stuck between 3 and 4 stars here; it's probably the most solid 3.5 I've encountered. Three stars seems a little harsh, so I went for four. I think I'll make a list of the good and the bad. Good: - Extensive selection of food - Pretty good service - The food was pretty good (one person had sticky rice and chicken wings, I had tofu and vegetable crispy pad thai, one girl had the tofu and vegetable pho, and the other girl had red curry chicken). - Nothing survives for long on Moody Street if it's not good. Bad(ish): - This is Waltham. Sure, it's Moody St., but it's still Waltham, and the prices were a bit high (vegetable dishes for $14?). - The noodles for the crispy pad thai were thin. They were fine, and the dish tasted fine, but I love the wider egg noodles in the crispy at Thai Hut in Somerville. These were just so thin, they were almost useless. - While the menu selection is wide, it's a little generic, with no special/different dishes that stand out. - I really wanted pho, but both the TOFU and VEGETABLE (this one was especially annoying) and the seafood soups were made with chicken broth. A vegetable soup especially should be made with vegetable broth, and the fish one should be made with dashi. So all in all, it's a solid 3.5 stars. The food is good, but not the best I've ever had. The prices are also not shy, but they are still not the worst I've ever experienced, either. But there was nothing on the menu for less than $10.

Went here for lunch today and thought the "crispy" pad thai was pretty good. The shrimp and chicken were fresh and not over-cooked or over-seasoned. Pricing was very reasonable. The servers were nice. Just an FYI in case you are thinking of ordering: the "crispy" noodles were a bit too crispy... almost like candy, so not much on the nutritional front. I've never had them before so not sure if this is the norm, buy consider yourself warned. Interesting quirk: they brought out my Diet Coke with the wrapper twisted gently around the straw, in a kind of straw wrapper origami. Never seen that before. Nice touch.

Okay, listen...I'm not really hating here when I say Tom Can't Cook. I'm sorry to all you guys that had really great experiences with the food there. The Pad Thia was BUNK...there was little to no flavor...even with the provided sauces the dish was pretty gross. I will add that I was stabbed in the gum with part of a shrimp leg that hadn't been fully cleaned properly. I am 1 of 5 or 6 at the table that night and we all had complaints. It wasn't just the food, or the prices...It was the over all eating experience. Although I will agree with Marcy L. about the Crab Rangoon which are great. All the starters really were kinda bomb almost enough for a third star...ALMOST. Another strike I have against me and my poor review is that I have not tried all that much off the menu in the first place. Like the fried ice cream or coconut anything as examples...which it looks like everyone loves. But at the end of the night and $100 poorer going to another spot for wings and beer with a Styrofoam thing half filled with BUNK Pad Thai says a little bit about a little bit when it comes to the overall satisfaction from this establishment. Probably wouldn't return...sorry tom, maybe I'll come by for some friend ice cream tho

I've been going to Belmont for Vietnamese food lately, but I stopped by Tom Can Cook when I was stomping up Moody Street and the urge for Pho Ga kicked in. The menu was impressive, spanning a whole bunch of different culinary styles... heavy on the Thai and Vietnamese, with a nod toward Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. I thought service was decent (and the hostess was really cute, not that it matters any), the soup came quickly, as did the cold Kirin. I could tell that it was Thai influenced when I smelled the soup, however. Thai cooking uses some herb that Vietnamese doesn't, that to me makes the dish smell somewhat feral, like a horse barn. Odd... I've had it in Thai soups before, but I didn't expect it in the pho. Now I need to figure out what it is so I can avoid it! In any case, I'm glad Tom is there. If I want Thai I'll probably go to Erwan of Siam up the street, and if I want Japanese or Korean probably Asian Grill down the street, but until somebody opens a better Vietnamese place on Moody street Tom will probably see me every few weeks or so.

Some other Yelpers have claimed that the waiters are dying to please but unfortunately I've had nothing but the opposite impression during all three times I frequented this restaurant (my boyfriend kept insisting we return, but after our last experience I don't think he will anymore). The waiters are slow, treat you like they're doing you an absolute favor by finding you a table or listening to your order. I asked for no spice and the dish came spicy (probably to hide the fact that the ingredients had no taste on their own) and the manager got very angry at me for asking that he exchange my dish to something I could eat (I am allergic to spice and made that clear, nicely, at the beginning). As for the actual food, I've never tried anything good or exceptional - only "OK." I don't think any of these people had any cooking experience prior to landing foot in this country. There is NO atmosphere either. Oh and the smoothies probably come from mixes and are not worth ordering.

There was a time in my life when I thought that their Kimchi Beef Fried Rice was the best dish ever invented so I kept going back for more. But each time I returned, I was more and more disappointed that it didn't taste quite as good as it had the previous time. I eventually stopped going, but the memory of what it once was is still burned onto my taste buds. Oh well. As for other dishes, the pad thai here is decent and I don't remember being particularly impressed with their noodle soups.

This place is good for American Style thai food. They have the basics. The table was really dirty when they sat us. When we asked for them to clean it, they didn't clean it until the food came!

From the bad reviews on here, I should consider myself lucky since I had a great experience. Tom Can Cook is small and trendy. I liked the cute hanging lamps and the staff is friendly. I had a yummy noodle bowl with shrimp, beef and delicious glass noodles! (Cellophane) The Thai iced tea was good but I will say If it was any sweeter it would have been overkill. The boba was OK but kind of soft and a little broken so it wasn't the best I've had - but still good. I'd go again - especially on a blustery day for a hot noodle bowl!

  • Justin D.

Personally I'm not a fan of Asian style food but I won't hold that against Tom, because he can, in fact, cook! It's strange I've been here more than any other restaurant on Moody street, and as I said, I'm not a fan of Asian. The restaurant is pretty nice, they be sure to keep it clean, and it's decorated well. The service is prompt and the food comes pretty quick. I've tried the Chicken salad, Chicken Katsu, and Chicken Fried Rice and all were pretty good. The delivery service got lost trying to find me, even though I'm right across the bridge, though I am in that mess of one way streets so I'll give them that, but instead of taking a half hour as stated over the phone it took the good part of an hour for the food to arrive. The prices are pretty good, it cost $50 for 5 of us to get take-out, the meals range from $10 to $15 at most I'd say. And to top it all off you can check out the menu online at tomcancook.com !

We used to come here quite often back in the days when my best friend lived in Waltham. Tom Can Cook is a great place to go for quick, cheap Thai food. We always got the same thing here - Crispy Chicken and Pad Thai. The Pad Thai was not too sweet and was quite "Americanized" but had a pretty generous portion of shrimp and tofu. The only thing I could think of that was negative was the parking. It gets quite crowded on Moody street around dinner time and when it is snowing and negative 20 degrees out, it is not fun parking far away from the restaurant and having to risk getting frostbite.

  • Kaye D.

Tom Cannot cook. #Thatisall I love pad thai and it isn't very hard to make but there is average pad thai and there is great pad thai. I expect bad pad thai in the food court of a mall, NOT a full fledged restaurant. The chicken pad thai was terrible. It was sickly sweet and without any of the other glorious flavors- bland chicken, no beans sprouts, not even hint of soy sauce...just oil and sugar. Fusion restaurant.... I think not. I have to agree that it is best never eat in a place that tries to do every type of "Asian" cuisine. Very disappointing.

I'm completely surprised. For what it is, this place is damn good. I had the Crazy Noodles... perfectly spicy. Not too hot not too mild. The coconut calamari was really good too although it didn't really have any coconut taste. And the kicker? The best fried ice cream that I've ever had. Seemingly hand battered delicious pure fried fat. How can you say no? I couldn't. The only problem that I had was that we waited too long to order and pay... I literally had to go find them. But once the food hit the table, the service was great.

It's true Tom can indeed cook! I was quite impressed because it has been awhile sins I've had really good Thai. The Tom's Pad Thai which is a bit spicy is delish. Iv also had the Crab Rangoon which are not big enough to my liking. So don't plan on sharing if you like your crab Rangoon, its very good. Although take into account it is a app. and the entrees are fulfilling. Iv also tried the scallion pancakes. Now this was one thing iv never run into before, peanut sauce on scallion pancakes! I really questioned even trying it, but it happened to be a great combo! Much less salt than the soy sause you get with most scallion orders. The tofu is also another good app to order, I tried a bite of my friends and it comes with plenty (to share) and a peanut sauce that gives flavor to the lightly crisped tofu. I'm planing on going back here so i can try some other things on their menu. It will be hard to not get the pad Thai, but the soup looks worth a shot and id love to try some more of their apps. So if your looking for good pad Thai, Tom Can Cook pad Thai! Order it out or walk in and sit down in a comfortable environment, not to busy and the wait staff are very nice and attentive. Their presentation is always awing and i truly believe it's good for you. I have yet to walk out feeling like MSG is attacking my system.

Neither as bad as some reviews say nor as good as others say, this place was okay. At first look of the menu with the word FUSION emblazoned proudly on it, and a quick look at the specials page, gave me an idea what Tom's goal is. To bring the tastes of Asia (all of it it seems!) to the Western diner. That means making it palatable to the Western palate. The food was okay, but not great. I ordered a Bi Bim Bab, my girlfriend ordered a bowl of udon noodles. We were both satiated but unenthused. if I lived around Waltham I might consider going again, but for the hike it is to me I'd keep driving to Green Tea..

I think Tom can cook. Is he going to win a prize for it? Probably not, but for a nice lunch under $10 I'll eat what Tom cooks. I had the Spicy Basil Chicken with rice noodles and it was pretty tasty and not too spicy. It seemed like a blend of Thai and Chinese, but it might just have been a bastardization of either. Regardless, it was pretty good and plentiful. Not bad for $7.25. The service wasn't great, but good enough. I think that sums it up.

i got takeout from there and for starters i live on campus at my school and they brought the food to the wrong place, so i had to walk and find them, then they messed up my order and charged us an extra 20 dollars and finally the women asked for a tip after all that we had been through. Overall the food was good but i was very annoyed and would not get takeout from them again.

  • Rebecca K.

Tom sure can cook, but he needs a little lesson on running a business. I'll start by saying that, once we were in possession of the food and able to eat it, it was delicious. But several things about the experience of ordering from them would make me think twice before ordering from them again. We initially called to order lunch delivery, which is advertised on their website. We were informed that they do not deliver for lunch. Fine, frustrating, but fine. When my friend who was ordering tried to politely alert them to the fact that their website advertised it (so they would know to take it down), the woman on the phone started arguing with her. Personally, I don't think she understood what my friend was trying to tell her. We decided to do take out and were told that our order would be ready in 20 minutes. That was rather surprising considering it was a large order, but we didn't argue. Lo and behold, when we arrived to pick up the food 20 minutes later, it was not actually ready. Perhaps it's the party line to tell all take out customers it will be ready in 20 minutes even if that's unrealistic, but it still sucks to be stuck waiting at the place for an additional 20 minutes for the food to come up. But, as I said, the food was quite yummy, so, if you're able to wait for lunch or can order later in the day (they may deliver for dinner, I'm not sure...), then maybe Tom is good for you. But if you're on a schedule, I'd look elsewhere.

There are two things this place is good for. One is if you are going out to eat with a group of friends and all of them want a different kind of Asian food, this place is likely to have the kind. And two, if you just kind of want Asian food and not really sure which type, you'll find something that'll tickle your fancy. The food isn't the best, but the abundant amount of choices is a good thing.

    (3)
  • Rebecca Y.

Tom, you are only ok at cooking. Your service is like molasses. Hot and spicy dishes means a table is going to need drink refills. The food is ok. My friends like the Bimbim Bab (I'm sure I spelled that wrong). Good for variety from the Waltham food circuit but not going to make the standard rotation.

    (3)
  • Ju L.

Overall, the food is decent. Menu is somewhat eclectic in the sense that you have some Thai, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, etc. I can recommend the Tamarind Boneless duck, but I'd avoid the Peanut Sauce Chicken/Beef as well as the Pad Thai. While the latter two were okay, they were something I wouldn't order again. The Thai food at Lanna Thai Diner (in Woburn, MA) is so much better. Didn't have any problems with the brown rice. Overall, for the price it was modest and a quick and easy stop if you're looking to satisfy Asian food cravings. Definitely not the best and not terribly memorable. Food is pretty mild.

Yes Tom sure Can Cook. He can cook pad thai, he can cook curry, he can cook almost every Asian and especially thai food better than the competitors on Moody st.

... I don't think he can cook. I am usually a big fan of Asian-style soups, but the ones here are not very flavorful. Prices, while not high, are just not proportionate to the quality. I think the atmosphere seeks to be better than your average Asian place but to me it is not doing the trick.

    (2)
  • J B.

The food is good, maybe somewhat average. The service is usually very good and quick (great for lunch). They have a very strange mix of Japanese, Thai, Korean and Polynesian (American Chinese). The udon noodle plates are quite good.

Who cares what the food tastes like when it takes 45 minutes to bring a seaweed salad?

    (1)
  • Lalin A.

Seriously boring place to eat. Plates are big and fulfilling: this is their only plus. Prices are not high. If you find yourself in Waltham for running errands and feel like eating Asian food, check it out. If not, don't worry, you won't be missing much.

    (3)
  • Mary M.

Great mix of Chinese, Thai and Japanese. My favorite dish is the Tofu in a hot pot, you get so much bang for your buck! The services is slow there at times, even when they are not very busy. But the food makes up for it.

  • Catie M.

every time i've been to this restaurant, the service has been slow. last time, they brought my dining partner's food about ten minutes before mine. of course, i told him to go ahead; i thought my plate would be quick to follow his. he was done eating by the time my entree arrived! the food is mediocre and they don't give you enough for what you're paying. nice atmosphere, but that's about it.

  • Nicole B.

I work on Moody street so Tom's is a lunch staple for me. Pad Thai is some of the best I've had, the Crazy Noodles are awesome, and the spring rolls are nice and fresh. I've done both take-out and eat-in, and though they are always very friendly, service is not up to par. For instance, bringing out one person's dish well before the other. But the prices are good, and lunch is only about $8 for a full-sized dinner portion.

  • Scott B.

ummmm i really dont know how they have so many stars - i think this place should be called Tom should open a bait and tackle store. Not only did it make a big dent in my colon but if i had rats they probably wouldnt eat it either.

  • Irene F.

Oh my word...this place is amazing. I lived on top of it for a few months, and every time I opened the window the smell of their kitchen filled my room and I was forced to order up some Crazy Noodles or Chili Steak or Pad Thai or you name it...there really is nothing that is not mouth watering goodness on the menu! Hands down the best Asian food in Waltham.

Can Tom Cook? I visited this restaurant tonight for dinner. From the outside, it looks like a cute Asian Fusion restaurant. There weren't many patrons, which should have signaled some red flags, but I was very hungry so went in. The first thing I ordered was a fruit smoothie with bubbles. It was delicious and refreshing. I was very excited for my meal given the joy of the smoothie, but found myself very disappointed. My boyfriend and I both ordered the Pad Thai: he got fried chicken on it and I had tofu. The tofu was ok, but the noodles were gross. He was equally as disappointed and actually ordered rice for his food so he could remove the chicken from the noodles. Normally, there are two types of pad thai, light and greasy. I don't think I could classify this as either. It was just awful, and was rough on the stomach after, even though we only had a small amount. The restaurant (and potentially Tom?) offered us ice cream after to make amends and in an attempt to make us come back to try something different. While their kindness, and the awesome smoothies, were greatly appreciated, I doubt we'll be back.

I was shocked to read bad reviews for this fabulous resteraunt. A spectacularly diversified large menu has brought me back numerous times. I have yet to be disapoointed. The atmosphere is perfect for a date, or a bigging to a night out. It's one of my favorite resteraunts on Moody St.
