Saturday before the concert my boyfriend and i stopped here to eat. I liked the interior if the place- an addition was made awhile back to accommodate more than the inital small bar and 3/4 tables. (Yet they didn't add space to the bathroom?!? Why??) Just locals at the bar but our server/bar tender was super nice and friendly- good food (perfect fries) A better place to eat vs the stadium- cheeper and no lines!!!

It's ok. Not great but ok. Had fried clam plate and they were ok. Our waitress was pleasent. Market price on fried clam plate was very pricey ($24.99). Two star dining/ five star prices. Locals love this place. I probably won't return.

First off, the place is loud. Just having a conversation over dinner took effort. The kid a few tables away didn't help with her crying and shrieking. Don't normally mind kids but that one was worse than nails on a chalk board. Then she started to stomp on the floor which traveled the length of the floor. Two different people approached the family politely and were told to mind their own business. On the bright side it made my parents reflect back on how well behaved I was when I was a kid. I'm sure plenty other families there were having the same thoughts. As for the food, the steak tips were good cuts of meat and perfectly cooked. They were lacking flavor though. The scallops were huge and very good. The onion rings tasted like batter without onions. They were disappointing. They don't serve Guinness which just can't be justified. The drinks came to us chilled. Not even close to cold.

It was a Friday at noon, I sat at the bar top. The bartender's name was George. The bar side is small, the do have a dinning room also. I had a cup of the fish chowder , it was excellent. For lunch I had the pastrami Rachel, it was ok. I have heard from numerous people that there pizza is excellent. Also they are known for their fried seafood. The bar has a "diner car" feel to it. I liked it very cozy. Service was great. In my opinion, authentic New England

Not as good as they used to be!!!! We went there for lunch and had lobster roll and fried whole clam plate, with onion rings. Absolutely tasteless clams and onion rings. And the sweet potato fries were the same. Me thinks it had to do with what they all were cooked in. No comparison with years past and so many other places that will get out business next time. Lobster roll saved the day it was OK.

This place doesn't look much from the outside but it's the inside that counts. The fried seafood platter is huge and very good and can feed multiple people. The restaurant is always busy on the weekends so there usually is a wait.

I remember waiting in line on the ramp in the entrance to get in here as a kid. I always loved going here. I moved away, but we were in the area and decided to stop in. I like seafood, mom in law likes seafood, hubby likes pizza hoping for a win-win. I hate going somewhere that you haven't been in years and find it is nothing like you remember especially with people who have never been and you say it's good. Not so here! The clam strips are still great. Hubby had chowder and clam strips too which was a surprise and he loved them too, as did the mom in law. Hey it's a diner! Even says it in the name. It is very casual dining so don't go in thinking it's fine dining. Pizza, beer and seafood.

Known for great pizza, 12", homemade crust, 50 year recipe. Also known for good fried seafood. Place is iconic. No ambiance, diner. Be prepared for families in the dining room. Tiny bar with locals. Depends on what you want.

Best clam plate ever had. Lunch portion $20 and huge portion. Bellies were perfect size medium. Service excellent.

I worked in Foxboro many years ago and this was the place to go. I was in the area and couldn't wait to get the fried clams. I was looking for the heaping plate full of clams of yesteryear. Unfortunately, even though they were good, they were not as good as I remembered. I know times have changed, but I was disappointed. I use to love this place but I'll hang onto my memories.

Not as good as it used to be....portions are smaller and clams are also smaller. I got a sirloin steak and 1/3 of it was gristle. Won't be back for a long time. We were anticipating the Red Wing of the old days....not!!! People who aren't used to good seafood may think it's really good, but we've been spoiled by some of our favorite haunts.

Best pizza, anti pasto, clams, scallops, beer, food. Good atmosphere a little rundown, but it's been there forever what would you expect. Great for take-out or dine in. The bar is great; awesome service and good prices. Not much to complain about here you have to try their pizza!!

Went Sunday which I guess was not the right day for a first-timer. Lots of families with kids, and what looked like a school team. Very noisy in dining room. I got a clam/scallop combo for $28.00 and the few clams that were there, were tough, and I couldn't eat them. Scallops were OK. Fries tasted like the standard frozen variety. I saw really good looking pizza going by, and the steak tip dinner was priced at $12.99 so I would definitely try other dishes, just not seafood. (I did see the jumbo seafood platter and there was plenty for 2 people, if that's what you're looking for.) The place didn't have a friendly vibe to me. I was by myself and when I went into the bar part, I felt like I was being glared at for even thinking of taking a seat a the bar.

There is only one way to enjoy this place : walk in assuming you are going to overeat on huge portions of fresh fried seafood. The fried clams and fried oysters are as close to classic NE fried seafood as your gonna get....accept the unhealthiness and grease, and you will love this place. Also don't waste your time on the fries (they have that weird coating on them thats meant to keep them crispy), get the handmade onion rings.

Amazing food. Welcoming crew. I've had everything on the menu but the seafood (I just don't like seafood) and I loved it all. Especially the turkey dinner.

Great clams, traveled from Arizona just to eat here. No atmosphere just honest value.

Great service even though it was very busy. We are the fisherman splatter and still had plenty to take home. The seafood was a bit salty but that could be the season. I'm definitely going back!

I must admit, I got a little worried when I started seeing reviews saying that the Red Wing has slipped, since I now live out of state and hadn't visited in 3 years or so. Not to worry. I have been coming here for 45 years and it is just as fabulous as it always has been. The fried clams (whole belly, anyone who writes a review based on strips doesn't know their clams) were perfect. and lots of them. Fried scallops were outstanding as well. The onion rings are among the best I've ever had, anywhere. If you are looking for a fancy night out, this is not the place - head down Route 1 and go to Davio's. If you want the best fried clams around, come here.

Went after seeing Phantom Gourmet reviews. Was so excited to get a fishermans platter & pizza, so we drove 25 minutes to get there. We walked through the door & it smelled horrible!!! Moldy, musty, & just plain stinky. Not wanting to give up our quest we went to the little bar & ordered a beer. We looked up at the ceiling & there are dust bunnies hanging off the ceiling & fans. HORRIBLE!!! We couldn't get out of there fast enough. Sorry Phantom Gourmet.......I can't trust your reviews any more.

Great fried clams here. I think these fried clams are similar to Cape Anne style fried clams. I couldn't stop eating the fries. Very crisp. Reminded me of pomme frites. There's some special items on the menu, like pies from that popular Walpole pie bakery. Tartar sauce was good. Ketchup was just okay. I'm surprised the Yelp rating isn't higher. I guess they're the victim of some kind of Walpole clam rivalry.

Can't tell this time. had been to Red Wing before and was okay to return. Ordered food over phone, 25 min wait. arrived at Red Wing 30 min later. Food not ready, told it would be a few min. No problem Friday in Lent. 10 min later still not ready. Waitress/bartender checks, tells me soon; ok. 10 min later ( a full hour since order) I am told that they do not know where my order is. I ask if I can submit now, they tell me sure but will still take another 30 min. I ask if it can be hurried as I had ordered for entire family. I am told no. I ask for a refund as I had already paid. They shrug and say sorry come again. Not a chance!

This place was NOT good. My parents and grandmother have raved about it for years (like 50 years) so I finally figured I'd try it. I'm a sucker for fish and chips. Maybe it's day has dawned. Nothing was right about this place. The chowder was thick like pure cornstarch. Some of the fish was over browned. Some of it was underdone. Breading was weird. Most of it was inedible. Dining room was oddly designed. Very cold feeling. Bar area was tiny and smelled like vomit. I brought home the rest of my fisherman's platter to my grandmother, who loved it. I won't be back.

Handicap accessibility is awful. My wife (in a wheelchair) and I went to the Red Wing tonight and had a terrible time getting in even though they claim to be wheelchair accessible. I had to hold the parking lot door open ( it opened toward the parking lot so I had to keep the door open with my foot) and try to get the wheelchair up a three inch step which happened to be the bottom of the ramp which was at a 45 degree angle. If your not familiar with wheelchair travel, that is a very steep incline. Once on the ramp facing the second entrance door we realized that at the top of the ramp the door opened toward us. There was no way I could hold the chair on the ramp, pull the door open and push the chair up the incline into the lobby of the Red Wing. Fortunately a very kind couple w ere leaving and they helped us get the chair to the door and over the threshold, which made the entry even more difficult. The server was pleasant but insisted that I not order a draft beer (which I prefer) due to problems they were having. I knuckled under and got a bottled beer only to discover a short while later that other servers were bringing draft beers to other tables and I could see into the bar and there were draft beers being served. My wife ordered the Fried Chicken Dinner and enjoyed it very much. I had the fried clam plate which was okay but was 50% clam strips! no bellies. The Red Wing was on our bucket list but we cannot return to a place that is obviously not willing to be truly wheelchair accessible. We are always wiling to give the menu a second shot but we need to be able to get in.

Delicious fried scallops plate. Good portion of scallops served over a mound of pretty darn good french fries.

for a very good fried seafood dinner you have to try this place. forget the naysayers...the place is clean and delicious. there isnt a hit of grease in the fried foods and our party of 9 had the clams, scallops and fried shrimp. ok, the cole slaw could have been colder, but who cares, this isn't the capital grill. by the way if you expect the capital grill don't waste your time because you'll submit a negative review. its GREAT and we will be going back. and by the way, lisa was a great server. hat's off!!

Every so often I get a craving for Fried Clams or Fried Oysters .... I try to limit these fried excursions for the obvious caloric and fat intact reasons but gave in as a Christmas gift for myself. They are able to do fried combo plates with both clanms and oysters - so this is what I ordered with an ice cold beer. The clams and oysters were breaded and cooked perfectly, with not a trace of sand. I tried the onion rings instead of the boring fries, but the onion rings are equally boring and too large for my liking. I prefer strings or at least smaller slices of rings. The cole slaw was just OK and the portion a little smaller than I expected. I'd give the place a better rating except for two reasons. 1) Sitting at the bar is very crowded. The stools are secured too close to the bar, people are crowded behind you and waiting for their takeout. If you come you should plan on waiting for a table - alas I was alone and prefer the bar and the conversations that can occur. Not here of course - the bar looked more like a nursing home and had the conversations of a library. 2) The prices are way over where they should be. The fact I added the oysters - which really didn't add much food to the plate, just portioned down, increased the cost of the plate to $28. Way too much. They are taking advantage of the Phantom publicity is my guess. They should reconsider these prices when getting these combo plates. I'll come back because their fried seafood is really quite good. Or perhaps for $28 I can get a back rub sitting at the cramped bar while I wait.

Great place for lunch. My son had the wings as an appetizer then a clam roll. More than enough for a 15 yeR old with a huge appetite.

This gets 2 stars just for the fisherman's platter. Other than that its small, stuffy and the bar area just looks like someone's beat up outside shed. It's on route 1 so it is easy to get to and the lot is bigger than the restaurant but its a try and MAYBE a go back to. Nothing I would go out of my way to try again.

I went back within the same week and ordered scallops; I received 10 scallops but will say they were large. One of the lil cups of tarter sauce was 90% mayo which turned me off from bothering to use the second cup. Again while I was pleased with the quality, I question the portion; I opened it while at the counter and did think to myself "is that it"?

I finally ate here for the first time last week after hearing so much about it for years! It was delicious! I honestly stayed away cause I thought it was a 'biker bar' cause that is how it looks from the outside. Very small, but don't let the appearance fool you, it's awesome! I started off with a Ceasar salad and my husband had the clam chowder. Both were good. I had the steak tip dinner with french fries and coleslaw and my husband had a one of the specials that night, haddock with spinach with onion rings and coleslaw. The steak tips were HUGE and so ridiculously good it was unreal. haha. The fries were average and the only downfall I have to say is the coleslaw, it wasn't creamy enough. My husband loved his meal as well and the onion rings were amazing. Fresh and very large! We ended up taking some home cause there were just too many. The service was really great as well. Our waitress was very informed of the menu and answered questions as it being our first time there. She never lingered and never disappeared either. Always on top of our drinks at the just the right time. Over a great experience and we can't wait to go back again.

Wow. The food here is great. My fiance ordered the prime rib special this weekend. He loved it. It came with fresh green beans (like the kind you get at the grocery store, and cut the ends off of, not some nasty canned crap that you would see on a plate at a diner) red bliss smashed potatoes, and the rib was cooked to perfection. I had the fried shrimp plate. It was good, but after trying the FHs prime rib, I wish I had got that instead! I had a bloody mary, he had a bud light. We had the irish nachos for an app, and with the 2 dinners it was $55!! What a bargin. We will definitely be here again... and again.. and again.

I've been coming here since I was a kid with my family. We always sit in the bar and have (seriously) had the same server/bartender (Michael?) for 25 years. It's definitely a dive, so just accept it. I always have the cheese pizza with onions and it is my second favorite pizza around. It does tend to be a little greasy, but the crust is awesome. My family always gets fried seafood and raves about it. Quick, cheap, great service. Great old diner.

  • Rita P.

this was just plain awful.....i ordered the caesar salad with steak tips medium rare and my husband ordered the fried oysters. salad greens were fresh but the steak tips were tasteless and overcooked. my husbands oysters came out white...not golden brown as they should be. he ate 3 of them and finally could not stomach the rest. he said the french fries were also inedible. when we mentioned to the waitress about the oysters she really couldn't be bothered. according to her observation they looked cooked to her. no apology or anything. she did offer to get the manager but at this point we just wanted to get out of there. will never go there again.

Haven't been here in years and thought I would give it a try since we were passing by on Rt 1. My wife and I both ordered a bowl of clam chowder. Plenty of clams, but kind of on the watery side. At about $5 for the bowl, I would have expected better. We split an order of fried calimari. Definitely over done. Again, I've had a lot better. They seem to highlight their fried seafood plates. Perhaps they are better.

Oh wow! I should have come to Yelp! before heading to this restaurant. I heard about this spot from a MeetUp group who made plans to meet there on Friday September 14th. They raved about how great the clams were and that the place was a Phantom Gourment hidden jewel. I could not make that night so I had planned to go on the 15th but didn't make it. This past Sunday, my daughter and I ventured off in that direction heading to Patriot's Place and decided to stop at Red Wing's for lunch. I had been telling her about it since I saw the MeetUp post. Well, there were about five cars in the lot (a sign - when the food is supposed to be soooooo good). Since this was our first time there, we didn't know there were two entrances. We went into the one to the bar since we saw a woman go in that way. As we were going in she was coming out with her pick-up. At the bar was four people not including the bartender (female). So we were kind of surprised to see how small it was. The bartender informed us that there was a dining area right through those doors if we wanted to go in there, which we did. So just before we walked though the doors, one of the patrons who was leaning on someone at the bar walked through the doors ahead of us and went to the hostess desk. Come to find out she was the hostess. So maybe everyone who was at the bar actually works there (who really knows). We get seated and what do you know, we are the only ones in the dining area. You read correctly: THE ONLY TWO PEOPLE in a dining room that held at least 50-75 patrons. I have been dining out for a very long time and NEVER have I been the only one anywhere for too long.* Anyway so we order the calamari and a cup of clam chowder for an appetizer. The calamari was not bad but not the best I've had either. I order calamari very often when I see it on the menu and have had it at several different places but this was the first place I actually ate the peppers that came with it (peppers are usually a staple with calamari). Most of the times it so good by itself I don't bother with the peppers, here I had nothing to lose and the peppers added flavor where the batter was lacking. I should have known then. The clam chowder was ok. We ordered the Fisherman's platter for two with the clam strips. It comes out almost golden brown but not quite. It looked so good but lacked flavor unbelievably. I added salt thinking that would help but it did not. On that whole platter with a heaping of french fries and onion rings, clam strips (maybe a cup and a half), scallops (about 10-12 pcs), shrimp (just 4), haddock (3 small pcs) and cole slaw (purple cabbage made it look like it was gray and not desirable at all) all for $33.95 the darn french fries was the best. That $57 we spent there could have been well spent on something else. We couldn't finish it so we brought the rest home for lunch on Monday. Thought it would be better once we put in the oven and got it browned nicely. Well to our disappointment, we enjoyed it much less the next day than we did the day before. However, the french fries was still the best of the bunch. So my daughter asked me would I go back. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Now that I have read a few reviews from people who used to frequent this place from childhood, I see that the management has changed. That is too bad! *No other patrons joined us in the dining area. Hmmmm!!!

A piece of deep fried heaven in the heart of Walpole. I have been coming here for the past 30 years. I just revisited it this past weekend and I am glad that thing have not changed. I ordered the Fried Clam strip plate and it was great!

To be fair, a group of five of us went on Father's Day, and it was pretty busy. That being said, the service was really slow. If the waitress hadn't brought bread to the table, we probably would have resorted to cannibalism during our 45 minute wait for lunch. There were a lot of big parties but I expected more of the quick in-and-out of other diners. The cheeseburger club I got was ok, but the burger pattie was a little weird, kind of rubbery. The fries were really good, though. Overall, it was alright, but probably not worth the wait.

  • Joanna C.

Come for the fried clams, and stay for the blatant racism from the patrons! The service was slow (super sweet - but kinda slow), and my boyfriend and I were waiting on our dinners (a pizza for him, fried clams for me!), when I noticed that one the patrons seated behind my boyfriend might have been talking about me when her daughter turned around and made "Chinese eyes" in my direction! I was FLOORED. The clams were amazingly delicious (you gotta love the squeeze bottles of tartar sauce!), but my entire experience was colored by an ignorant patron. Might be back for take out??

This was a painfully uncomfortable experience! George waited on me. I should have known I was in trouble when he kept dropping F bombs because the phone kept ringing. I just wanted a great bowl of chowder, fast. I got neither. The chowder easily could have come out of a can and it took forever. While I was waiting I had to listen to George curse and complain about everything from the phone to the owner giving him his W2. Very painful. Next time I will keep driving down the road to Davio's at Patriot's Place!

I haven't been to the Red Wing in years. I have also heard that it was slipping. We went on Friday night and it was packed! We waited in the bar area & were seated before we finished our beer. My husband & I split the whole clam & scallop combo plate with fries & coleslaw. It happened to be small belly clams if you like em small & the scallops were so tender & delicious. This was the best fried seafood I had all year. We were both full on the one plate, service was reasonable except for we ordered another beer & canceled the order because we were done eating & they forgot to remove it from the bill, no big deal.

Ordered 2 seafood platters and chowder for takeout on July 10th, when we got home we realized the chowder was missing, which was $5.99 btw. I called to let them know and was lied to; they told me they didn't charge me for it, when they in fact did! I can add and count! The seafood platters were an astonishing $34.99 a piece! And they were terrible, the seafood was all soggy! Any fool knows you don't take freshly fried seafood and immediately place it in a styrofoam container and close it--the steam from the hot food creates moisture, which ruined it! Not to mention the clams were tiny!! All this and we left a hefty tip. Never again!!

I hereby give the Red Wing Diner 4 Stars and an RBI double. A Phantom approved hidden Jewel on Route 1 South in Walpole, this all American comfort food Restaurant is always hopping, especially on weekends. Good portions, speedy and friendly service and very fair prices. My wife and I dined here back in the summer and her clam strip plate was a heaping helping for just 10 bucks! I got the burger and it didnt wow me, but it was a pretty good burger. I have had their pizza as of just weeks ago as I was watching a boxing movie called "Joe and Max" and had it loaded with sausage and onion! I scoffed that bad boy within 10 minutes. I could have easily taken down 2 of these as they are bar style, but I would have a serious glutin beating, so I'm glad I kept it at just one! Yes sir, the Red Wing is Good spot and you get a good bang for your buck there! There is plenty of parking as well as seating capacity inside.

I've wanted to try the Red Wing for a while and finally go to over the weekend. Overall, it was very middle of the road. We started with Calamari - which was fair, though the marinara sauce was excellent (only time I can say that's happened). My wife had the turkey dinner which was really good. I had a combo plate - clams and scallops. I was someone disappointed in the clams -- I was hoping for greatness, but they were average. Service was pretty good. The inside was pretty drab. The men's bathroom was tiny - it shouldn't be legal to have a stale without a door (only person who'd use that, would have to have spent time in prison). My wife said her pocketbook barely fit in the ladies' room with her. We won't be making the trek back to the Red Wing Diner.

For the past 21 years (I am 24) my grandfather, father and I have been going to the Red Wing to celebrate Father's day (with my three younger siblings joining when they reached the appropriate age). Needless to say, this place has some tradition in my family (my g-pa has a scrapbook of sorts with photographic evidence of each year if you don't believe me). Last night, we returned once again to this historic neighborhood spot and enjoyed our annual routine. Appetizers: Always onion rings and pizza (classic cheese). The O rings are nicely fried, with big juicy onions, while the crust on that cheese pizza has still not been replicated at any other establishment. Main: My grandmother (a recent addition to our outing, thereby quelling our chants of "men men men men men men men men manly men!) always gets the lobster roll, which is not large in size but cheap ($10) and packed with fresh knuckle and claw meat, while the rest of the table enjoys the fried seafood of their liking. Scallops and whole belly clams are where it's at, and the fisherman's platter is simply massive (3 people could not finish it). Considering the quality of the seafood and the fact that it is nearly impossible to finish a plate on your own, the value is excellent. Fresh seafood, simple preparation and tradition are what this place is all about. So kick back, enjoy some delicious fried seafood and a Sam Adams Brick Red on tap. Classic New England.

OMG, i have never had so much (good!) fried seafood in my life for $12. It is both totally amazing and surprising it was inland, in the suburbs, and at a diner. They even bring a whole ketchup DISPENSER of tartar sauce to the table, no rationing a tiny dixie cup's-worth here! not the lightest, panko-crusted-whatever-gourmet seafood, but a great value. especially since lots of summertime clam shacks charge exorbitantly for so little only because of tourist demand. Full plate of fried oysters, so many i couldn't eat them all, with homemade beer-battered onion rings and light, delicious coleslaw. Unbelievable deal!

Atmosphere-reminds me of a Richard Simmons video from the 80s, where he pops up on a spoon to accost eaters of Sundays. Food -reminds me why Richard Simmons exists. The fried clams & oysters are great, esp for being inland .You can also get a beer to go with it. Sorry Richard; I just can't resist good fried seafood. See you later at aerobics to "burn" !

Surprised at first by the inside dining room....was nice looking, not like a diner at all. Sell a little bit of everything but think they're main thing is fried seafood platters. My boyfriend and I both got burgers beer and onion rings and it came to about 32$ which is the typical price we pay when we go out. but I considered it pricey for the quality of food. Waitress was busy and unattentive. But the place was pretty busy. Phantom Gourmet has a sign hanging outside that says 'hidden gem' thats what caught the boyfriends eye. I don't think I'll be returning...patriot place is right done the road so its hard to drive by that for this place

We went to redwing last evening and both ordered the clam plate. the waitress advised us the whole belly clams were smaller that evening. when we got them they were no more than strips. We felt cheated that we paid 19.99 a plate and the clams were terrible. Since the waitress told us they were small we felt obliged to pay. It was a complete waste of money they could have at least charged us the clam strip price. Take notice if they say the clams are small bellies today do not buy.

  • Tiffany E.

So good. The full bellied fried clams are my favorite. I am not from New England but I have tried several types of clam strips/fried clams and these are by far my favorite, without going to the beach. They are tender, crispy, but not too crispy, nicely seasoned and the portions are HUGE. I took half of my order home and it still was delish the next day for leftovers. I think service is excellent. I had a nice conversation with our waitress about their t-shirts and the restaurant being featured on "Phantom Gourmet". It's not a large restaurat, so if you need something, the busy staff is easy to flag down if you NEED to, but they have always been attentive every time i've been there. I love this place. If I ever move away from New England, this will be the restaurant that I will miss. :)

Yes, its not some high-falutin' high class dining room, nor is it a cozy clam shack near the shore, but that doesn't matter. I've never had a bad dinner here. Whole belly fried clams are always tasty and sand free! Huge portion of clams piled on the plate so high, you need to be really hungry in order to finish. What is also nice is that they have other meals that aren't seafood that are just as good so that everyone can find something to eat. My nephew got the fried chicken dinner, outside nice and cruncy, inside moist and juicy served with a side of summer squash!

I've been here too many times. I came back from college and the waitress started critiqueing my boyfriend on not finishing his meal this time around. Don't try to get health food, don't try to get gourmet. Go with the basics and the seafood. My boyfriend always get the fried clam strips though we've split the seafood platters before. I love the fried white fish (whatever they decide it is). I love the cheese pizza and every thing else. I love the onion rings too. The best thing about the seafood is that you can now get onion rings and fries instead of ordering them as a side. They just redid their menu and raised prices about $0.25 on the meals. With pizza still around $7 (with half to take home), it won't keep me away. It just makes the place look neater with a new menu and clear prices. The seafood is pricey, as it should be but everything else is rock-bottom prices compared to the other places around!

This place does a great business and there's a reason for that - good food and good prices for this family friendly restaurant. If you go at a peak time, you might have to wait a bit, but it will be worth the wait and the food and service will be the best. I've had many different meals here and have always been very satisfied.

In attempting to find a lobster between Boston and Providence worthy of the competition (Popponesset in Mashpee on the Cape has the BEST to date), I checked Yelp!'s reviews to find this contender. It sounded like lobster rolls, fried clams and pizza were the items not to be missed. So, let's talk atmosphere and price. You get what you pay for. And this is a no frills establishment... The dive-y bar was sort of what I was after. We had a couple of beers here before heading into the dining room, which was nicer, but freezing. The AC was really cranking. We opted for the lobster roll and the pizza. They were out of whole belly fried clams. The lobster roll was CHEAP: $11. The meat was fresh and yummy. And they added no mayo (they made it DIY so you could add mayo if you want). I enjoyed this. They also added lettuce, which I have yet to see on a lobster roll. The buns were grilled, but not buttered. So, all-in-all, it was quite healthy. But there wasn't a lot of meat. Again, you get what you pay for. The sweet potato fries, on the other hand, were not so great. They were cold and slightly soggy. I was hoping for piping hot and crispy. But I digress, they were a "feature" not the main reason for going. The pizza was decent. I'd give this part a "3.5" A little thicker than I like, but still thin, crispy and delicious. My cousin also wanted me to state that we were not "full" with the quantity of food we were portioned in our entrees. However, the DQ down the road paired nicely to satisfy us.

I don't understand all the hype about this place. While the atmosphere in the bar is kind of cool and old school the food is not that good, I have tried the pizza and fried sea food. The pizzas were small and not cooked very well. Many other places in the area make a better pizza. The sea food was a little too much - I was sick about 1/3 of they way in. Not food poisoning or anything...just too much grease. That could be my fault though because I may just not have a stomach for fried sea food. I also tried several apps....and was not impressed. Come for the bar, not for the food.

Right off Route 1 south Walpole on your way to Gillette Stadium, the Red Wing diner has been around for years. Good for fried seafood, burgers, Lobstah Roll, etc. Formica & Linoleum rule the decorating scheme-but this place is all about the diner food. They've decided to stick with the "dive" theme in & out as it has worked well for them for the last 30 years or so...

Went there this past Friday...the downside...It was lent and there was a 45 minute wait...stuffed like sardines into a small waiting area. And now for the best part... THE FOOD WAS AWESOME. Last time I had the Fried Clams, this time the Fried Scallops...melted in my mouth. Great flavor, not too greasy...and get this...24 scallops on my plate. I could have eaten them all, but took them home and had lunch the next day. Clam Chowder was a little weak, and thin, but still good.

For the best fried clams, scallops and bar pizza, this IS the place. Very reasonably priced as well.

Went to red wing Saturday night and it was quite busy...but our wait was only around 15-20 minutes. It was worth the wait to say the least. Our waitress Lisa was at our table within minutes of us sitting down and had a drink in front of us quicker than we could say Red Wing! We had clam chowder to start and it was simply delicious. Then we got the calamari for an appetizer..very good and reasonably priced. For the main meal we got the clams...great portion for the price. LOVE IT! Our waitress was the hardest working waitress this side of the mississippi. As busy as she was we got great friendly service. Service with a smile. I'll be back again. Affordable drinks and great seafood. Very old time classic feel in the bar, charming! The interior in the dining room is totally renovated and updated. After enjoying our lovely dinner in the dining room, we headed over to the bar area and were pleasantly surprised! It was the kind of place where you feel like a member of the family...and were treated like one! Our bartender named Cait was extremely on top of our drinks and we we went no more than 30 seconds without a drink in front of us! I was curious as to what our experience would be like here after reading some of the reviews on yelp....but we were not disappointed! Can't wait to go back!! And we will ask for Lisa!

This place is good, but overrated! The waitress here was one of the worst and probably spends Christmas by herself!

Swung in on a rainy day for lunch, and I am glad I did. The day bartender was off so I was treated to the night bartender. Her name escapes me but she was quick and attentive. Place seems scary, unless you a dive bar lover, but the burger was incredible.

This is a great place and the fried clams are one of my favorites. We also like their recipe for Fish & Chips. Pizza can't be beat! Try to get there early for a seat at the bar, in a room that used to be a railroad car from the early 1900's. Great stop on Highway One! Friendly staff!

Honestly, I don't think they deserve 1 star... Food...eh..just ok....pricing, too expensive for mediocore food..and service AWFUL (waitress screwed up our order and then basically accused/yelled at us for HER MISTAKE...Great attitude lady). If I wanted to go to a restaurant where their server treated you like crap I'd go to Dicks Last Resort (which I would never go to to begin with so you can tell I was shocked that a "Mom and Pop" diner would have the same attitude). All in all, I will never go again and nor will the other 5 people that were with me.

The Red Wing has slipped. Food just okay, the fried seafood used to be the best, fried clams bland, overpriced onion rings even more bland.

  • Travis K.

OK so my family and I eat here last night because we heard it had the best Pizza in the area. Although that may have been true we found the other food we ordered not to be good at all. My wife's broiled haddock florentine tasted like a dish that would be served in a nursing home. The atmosphere was also disappointing. This place definitely draws an older crowd.

Good fried seafood. The scallops are awesome. Tender and just plain good. The Onion rings there are phenomenal. They fry the onion ring and don't add any seasonings. That keeps the sweet flavor of the onion still there. The fish is flaky and tender and the clams are just fresh fried clams. The pizza there was good too. If you get a Fisherman's platter (Onion rings, fries, fried fish, fried clams, fried scallops, coleslaw with not a lot of mayo) and a linguisa pizza, you'll be set for 4. Funway USA is right by Red wing so when you finish go-karting, golfing, and bumping people, go here for some seriously good seafood.

Went here Saturday night based on the yelper's reviews. Can't figure out why such high ratings for this place. While the pizza we got was great, food alone does not a restaurant make. We met some friends in the restaurant half. After being seated we knew we would be staying long. The restaurant was fishy smelling and austere (they're also doing some remodeling). Eating outside would have been more pleasing if that were an option. The prices on most things were just as expensive as any in the city. But to be polite, we ordered around of Bud light (bottles because they didn't have any beer taps) @ $2.50, and a pepperoni pizza. I will give it to them that their pizza is pretty good. Good enough that if I lived in the area, I get a pizza to go on occasion. Pros: Pizza was good Beer was reasonable price Cons: Dining are smelled and lacked any semblance of ambiance. No draft beer Prices more expensive than expected.

As good as it gets if you love fresh scallops and clams and dang, even the pizza nd burgers are good here! We don't get down here as often as we'd like to and would like to see a north shore Red Wing eatery!!!

I live in Walpole and have 3 children and have been to Red Wings twice and both times the food was just ok and the prices are too high given the food we recieved. You may ask why I bothered going back the second time but I did to relook at the menu and see maybe I just ordered the expensive items without paying attention to the entire menu. Nope, that was not the case. Red Wings may be fine if you can afford it, but in the Walpole area there are no shortages of good restaurants which caterer to families and when your raising 3 little one who really don't eat all that much, there is no need to overspend.

Great local place for basic eats. If you're the kind of person that thinks Olive Garden is authentic and don't like dive bars and restaurants, don't bother. Red Wing is locally owned, local cooking, with friendly service. A little rough around the edges? Thank goodness. Great seafood, and their pizza is downright spectacular. Don't miss the bar area, which is a cool old original 30's diner.

I almost fell off my chair when I read that Red Wing's was sold until I realized it was to their longtime manager. You can eat in the main diner which has bar stools (full liquor license) and a few tables or sit in the main area which is deceivingly large. If you like fried clams then this is the place for you. The portions are huge and will satisfy anyone's appetite. They also have an enormous plate of onions rings that are battered and deep fried to perfection. My personal favorite are their pizzas. I usually buy several the night before a Pats game and heat them up instead of the typical wings or chili. The peperoni and hamburg pizzas are to die for and you'll not want to share any. There is not much to say about the interior of the diner except that it is very old and shows it. On some weekends they run out of items so it is usally best to get there no later than 7pm or just call ahead.

My relatives and I decided to visit this diner while checking out the nearby Patriot's stadium. This place doesn't have the traditional diner feel. It is completely closed off with no windows. The food selection was pretty normal for a diner, with the exception of a variety of battered fried seafood. The full belly fried clams is a must try. Also the buffalo wings aren't half bad as well. However, the burger and fish plates are rather bland and could be better. The service was good and food was served quickly.

After a failed attempt to go to another restaurant nearby, my family decided to come here for lunch on Saturday. My mom said she used to come here when she worked nearby years ago and loved it. Being me, I quickly looked up the yelp reviews and had high hopes. Overall, a mixed bag. Red Wing is somewhat of a hole in the wall (but standalone) diner on Route 1, so very easy to miss. When we went, around 2pm, the place wasn't too busy, and had a few elderly couples and a couple families. The place has been around for a while after all. My dad got the broiled haddock, with rice and cole slaw. My mom got fried shrimp and I got fried haddock, both with onions rings and slaw, so we split our meals two meals. The fried haddock would have been great but the batter, which was high quality, light, and crisp, wasn't completely bland. No hint of salt or any other spice, so I had to add some. The tartar sauce, served in a clear ketchup bottle, seemed like it was not fresh and grocery store tartar sauce. The lack of any spice was a little easier to ignore with the shrimp since shrimp is naturally a little salty, but still, same complaints about the batter. The cocktail sauce served in a small ketchup bottle, seemed fresher than the tartar sauce and helped with this. Of note though, the actual fish and shrimp were extremely high quality, juicy and cooked perfectly, though if you don't get that in MA you're in a really bad joint. Portions were pretty small too: 1 medium sized haddock filet and 7 fried shrimp between the two of us. The onion rings also missed greatness. Thin cut onions with light batter but not thin enough to crumble off. Again, no hint of salt or any spice, at all so I had to add salt and pepper. Coleslaw was meh, just kind of a soggy pile of vegetables, and definitely the worst part of the meal. My dad did say he loved the broiled haddock, and I'd belive it, since his didn't have the bland batter and just solid, fresh fish with bread crumbs. We usually don't get desserts at restaurants, but my mom loves bread pudding, so, we placed an order. It was cut up chunks served in a large glass mug with whipped cream on top. It was very good, not too sugary, and the cinnamon and raisins weren't overpowering as I've had at some places, but definitely felt like it had been lying out for a while and microwaved. Overall, service was okay. Waitress was decently attentive, though food took a while to come out even though the place was not busy at all. Food selection outside of fish was kind of sparse for a diner, a few steaks, a few sandwiches, chicken fingers and wings, mozzarella sticks, a few other seafood items (only broiled or fried). Would I recommend Red Wing? If you're in the area, sure, since you could do a lot worse. My parents liked it, but I'm a much pickier/discerning eater since I eat out a lot more than they do. But Red Wing is still a little over-hyped and not a place you need to go out of your way to eat at. 3 entrees, sodas and the 1 dessert set my family back $60 after tip. So, somewhat reasonable but a little pricy for lunch.

SSSSSHHHHHHH! Don't tell anybody about this place. The wait is long enough! The food is great, the service is what you'd expect at a diner and for the prices (adequate but not fawning) and its well worth any expenditure. Decent adult beverage selection, too. My grandparents went here back in the 60's. We were there when it was picnic tables, paper dishes and shared seating. They've remodeled and now use real dishes - picnic tables are long gone.

If Homer Simpson ate here he would say: Mmmmm FRIED CLAMMMSSS! I also recommend the Fried Scallops, Baked Mac n Cheese, Cheese Pizza, and the Portuguese Chourico and Kale soup. Expect to splurge a little for the fried delicacies but everything else is pretty reasonably priced like steak tips or the baked fish with mac n cheese, or hot dogs and beans. Lol. I'm not sure why they don't give you small plates when they give you the bread basket. Been there like 100 times, it never fails. Listen...when you get there ignore the decor, try not to use the bathroom, and order your seafood fare. That is your mission. If you get friendly with the older waitress she'll tell you all about her 20 children (cats). Oh Yeah, squeezable bottle of Tartar sauce. Awesome. How many times do you have to ask for extra tartar sauce everywhere else?... Everytime.

Contrary to a couple of the most recent reviews, I give Red Wing 1.86 thumbs up. Went there this past Wednesday around 5pm and worried about the place being empty. Waitress named Lisa was nice and attentive. Ordered fried clam plate with fries ($17.95) and husband got the fried plate combo w/clams and scallops ($25.50) with onion rings instead of fries ($1.00). We didn't even wait 10 minutes before our orders arrived piping hot. The orders were huge, with great seafood to o. ring/fries ratio. Clam bellies were MUCH bigger than I've had at Dube's and Kelly's. Fried scallops were also good, but I'm more of a clam kid. Renovations look complete. Pleather booth seats coordinate with wall colors, floors retiled with wood, lighting updated, whole interior repainted. Bathrooms are still , eh. Red Wing lost a star (or 0.14 thumbs) because of way disappointing tartar sauce, key for any clam fan. Pickle relish to mayo ratio is terrible, maybe because they serve it in a squeeze bottle and all the relish settled to the bottom. Shaking the bottle upside down like in the Heinz ketchup commercials didn't help. By the time we left Red Wing, every seat and booth was filled, which says something for a Wednesday nite. ********April 2010********** Well here's a nice suprise - the tartar sauce bottle is now refrigerated instead of kept table-side next to the salt and pepper shakers. Cold tartar sauce definitely helps suspend the yummy relish bits in the mayo base - but they still need to add more relish (please Red Wing, hear my cry). Fried clams and scallops are still amazingly fresh, light and arrive HOT, and wait staff is very friendly. Didn't get Lisa the waitress this time, but she was still nice. 1.9 thumbs up for now. Will get 2 whole thumbs up if the t. sauce is fixed.

This place is a dive. But being a dive makes it a great value for fried seafood, because you're not paying for the decor. Portions are large and prices are reasonable. So it's not one of those "travel-show" North Shore joints, but that doesn't make it any less. The whole belly clams are fresh and the lobster roll is really good too. Even the fisherman's platter had a good variety of fresh seafood. If you're going to an event at Gillette, fill up here and skip the concessions, that's what I do.

Whenever I come back to MA, I always stop by. Liam, the owner, is amazing. He is SO nice!!!! We always sit in the small bar area. The service from Liam is always wonderful, my beer was never empty! The food is good and I love the "neighborhood bar" feeling of this place.

Another post about Red Wings because it was that good. Last night I came home late from work because I took a prenatal yoga class in the city. Anyways, my husband suggested Red Wings for dinner and I happily said yes. My recent post mentioned that we only had take out from Red Wings and I've been wanting to eat at the restaurant so this was great plus I was starving! I had plans of getting my favorite fried clams (w/the bellies please) plate but once we were seated which was prompt, I saw "steak tips with rice" and instantly my mouth watered. I ordered it medium with a side garden salad. My husband got his usual fish and chips. Garden salad was good. Fresh veggies with iceberg lettuce and I had Italian dressing on it. I am so happy I got the steak tips because they were d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!!! Perfectly cooked to my order and it came with rice pilaf (just buttery rice which is exactly what I wanted with my meal) and cole slaw. The cole slaw is the same as I reviewed before... kind of watery and a little too acidic for me so next time I will get another side veggie. But overall the meal was fantastic. I couldn't finish the steak tips so I brought it home for my dog and he loved them too! (What dog would pass on steak tips!) My husband thoroughly enjoyed his fish and chips as well and washed it down with a Sam Adams Red Brick beer (I think that is the kind he got). Anyways, it definitely has a local vibe feel and we were going to sit at the bar but I felt a little too intimated because it looked like locals were gathering in there and we're newbies so I wanted the booth in the dining area. This place isn't a fancy place which I love about the place. We will be going there again... soon...

Best Calamari ever! $2.00 drafts in a old diner setting, awesome. No dress code here, nothing fancy about it. The menu has a focus on fresh seafood and Italian but they also offer a huge array of sandwiches, burgers ect...Something for everyone. The calamari melted in your mouth lightly fried with banana peppers, YUM! Onion rings were certainly homemade and the portions that you got were crazy for the price. All the staff were friendly and I will certainly be back!

The bright light in the dining room doesn't hide any of the years of wear and tear this place has experienced, but that's ok, this is a "diner", right? Roll up your sleeves and tip the waitresses by dropping the spare change in your pocket on the table like the grizzly guy in suspenders behind me just did. Ok, maybe you don't want to follow that guy's example but the menu has items like $2.50 cheeseburger so it isn't that far fetched of an idea. I of course came for the fried clams -- and they did not disappoint (even though I got some heavy duty heartburn later on in the day). Some of the biggest bellied beauties I've found this year were generously encrusted with a crunchy but not overwhelming batter and served alongside some tremendous thin, delicious onion rings. Btw, I stole some of my companion's french fries and they were easily some of the best fries I've had in a long long time -- they were brilliantly crisp and amazingly potato-y (weird, right?). Her lobster roll was a little bit of excellent too -- they put the mayo on the side! I might hit this place up the next time I'm spending too much money at the Wrentham Outlets. Or if I ever manage to make it to a Patriot's game.

It's not fine dining. It's food. Sometimes the two mix, but if they don't...that's not the worst thing in the world. Take the Red Wing, for instance. It's been around since Colonial times, I think...OK, I'm not sure it's been around that long but it's really old...and it serves pretty standard diner fare. And does it pretty well, too. Resembling one of those roadhouses found along Route 1 when that road was the main north-south highway between Boston and Providence the Red Wing dishes out hamburgers, steaks, fried seafood and pizza all year round. This is no-frills eating...this is not fancy...this is diner food. Don't expect anything otherwise. That doesn't mean there aren't a bunch of standout selections on the menu. Fried clams are better than what you'll get in many higher-priced seafood restaurants, the lobster roll is a bargain but the standout item is the pizza, for it beats a number of specialty restaurants. There isn't fancy decor, the aroma of exotic spices, or a fancy dining experience here. The Red Wing doesn't try to be anything aside from what it is. It's diner food. Get in and eat.

The place to go for fried clams .......fried clams..fried clams!!! Definitely a piece of Americana in the old fashioned diner/bar scene....Service with a smile......never in many years have I had a bad experience there......definitely worth the trip when you want wintertime fried clams and the Cape is closed!!!

Having actually lived in Walpole for 12 years, the Red Wing Diner is one of the things I miss most about being in L.A. Folks out here just don't understand about whole-belly clams and lobster rolls! The Red Wing may be scruffy in appearance, but the fried seafood cannot be beat - at any price. Can someone FedEx me a half dozen lobster rolls?

This is a old school suburban classic. Cheap yummy fresh eats!! And don't be fooled by the grungy, divey exterior and interior.....they have not renovated this place--EVER--and it has been open for over 50 years!!!!! I highly recommend the fisherman's platter or broiled scrod. DEEEEEELISH!!

Although quite sketchy on the exterior, the interior is now being remodeled for the first time ever! Huge servings. Average prices. EXCELLENT FRIED WHOLE BELLY CLAMS!!!!! Fried oysters are great too! We had the nicest waitress ever about a month ago. I wasn't very impressed with their fried calmari though.

I have to write an update because we went in here a few months ago and they have since redone the place since my last review and the inside looks so much nicer and the food is great as I hoped. I can't give it 5 stars because I think they upped the prices but didn't up the quality - don't get me wrong, one of the best places for fried seafood around but we know of a little tiny place near our house that has even better quality and even lower prices. But on the days where our other place is closed and we are craving a lobster roll or fried clams or fried scallops this is the first place we think of now that they have made some updates!

My friend told me about the Red Wing and how they had great fried clams. After hearing that, I dragged my wife on a Sunday afternoon. When we got there, it was half full, but after we placed our order, that's when the crowd started to pile in. We ordered the fried Seafood platter and a Caesar salad along with a clam chowder. The chowder was one of the tastiest bowls I've ever had in the New England area. It was creamy, smooth, and the clams practically melted in your mouth. The seafood platter was absolutely worth the price of admission! The fry batter was spot on as it coated the big bellied clams, shrimps, scallops, and fish with a crispy golden texture. The clams filled my mouth with such sweet clam juice, and the fries and onion rings were awesome as well. I'd definitely come back for those clams. The other menu items looked very appealing and reasonably priced too. Now I'll have to go back several more times and really put the menu to the test!

OK one of the dumbest reviews I ever saw about the Red Wing, or any restaurant for that matter, was on another web site when someone said that they hated to go here because the wait for a table was too long. Umm hello??? Down here on Earth that is actually a good thing. I have to say that the Red Wing is one fantastic place to grab a bite to eat! They do pizza and clams better than anyone. The service is fun and lively and the bar section is an old diner so it is crowded but really fun and interesting. The Red Wing is not pretty but you will find yourself eating great food at an awesome price including what has to be the best price for a Lobster Roll you are likely to find.

I can't believe that people gave this place 4-5 stars! The food is mediocre. Went with 3 other people expecting great food@ good prices.Everyone was completely dissapointed. Greasy and tasteless! jalapeno poppers were just frozen. TERRIBLE!!!The people who gave it high marks must be used to the low calabre of their food. To think Phantom Gourmet named it a "Hidden Jewel" I won't listen to them anymore. The waitress was a real pill also! Service was awful! Don't waste your money!Ugh!!!!

Grab a stool in the bar that hasn't been updated (or possibly cleaned) since the 70s, order a bud, a cheese pizza and a plate of clams and chat to the sketchy guy next to you. Listen to the waitresses talk fresh to the regulars. You will feel like you died and went to greasy spoon heaven.

I went here for the first time not too long ago after driving by it for many years while heading to Gillette Stadium. Wow, what a great little place. The fried clams were amazing and at a awesome price. We couldn't believe the prices, what a deal!! Also got the mac n' cheese and a pizza. which hit the spot perfectly. Overall, great bar/diner food at great prices. And the entire staff were very very friendly and helpful. we immediately felt at home. This is definitely a place I will trek down to from Boston if I'm craving fried clams. I already can't wait to go back!

for $20 the clams were meh, onion rings greasy. hate to say it but I would have been better off spending even more at Skipjacks where I have had exceptional clams. Not sure when Red Wing clams got so expensive and mediocre.

This is probably the worst restaurant I've ever been to. First off, hold your nose when you walk in - it literally stinks. Except for the fact that we were there to celebrate a birthday dinner, we'd have immediately walked out. This is a place I fondly remembered as a kid as serving great fried clams. What happened!! The clams were fried with a sickly colored coating of flour, were luke warm, and tasted like the aroma we smelled. This is what clams are like when they use pre-breaded frozen clams and fry them in oil that they haven't changed in a month - hence the smell. One of our party ordered scollops that were in the same condition - poorly over-cooked, bland, and smelly. As for the chowder, forget it, Snows chowder out of a can has more taste. Combine the miserable excuse for cuisine with really outrageous prices and you come up with a nightmare dining experience. Red Wing Stinks! Literally and figuratively.
