    I'm from the South and a staunch lover of BBQ. Since I moved here last summer I have been looking for a BBQ spot and I can say I've found it in Red Eye. This is the best BBQ I've had since I've been in Boston. The St.Louis Ribs and smoked chicken are really good. The roasted sweet potatoes compliment any of the meats perfectly. Definitely suggest this place if you are looking for a good fix of BBQ in Boston.

    Best BBQ in Boston. Great brisket, mac and cheese and corn bread. The sweet tea is just like the stuff you get in the south. I can't wait to try their fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Last time I was there I they had a bacon peanut butter cookie as a special.

    Just ordered from the Red Eyed PIg for the first time, hankering for some bbq chicken. Unfortunately, it was such a disappointment! We got the bbq fried chicken with the coleslaw and roasted sweet potato. The chicken was awful, chewy and tasteless. The potatoes were dripping with oil and the cornbread was rubbery and bland. What a disappointment. Maybe the chicken is not their best meal to order...but we won't be going back anytime soon to find out! (The people that work there are really nice, so no reflection on them.)

    First I have to say, we went there due to the fact that I saw them on Phantom Gourmet & they raved. I got together a seven person order at work & grabbed two friends to bring it all back, we are in Newton Upper Falls and it took only 15 min to get there on back roads so that was cool. I worried about parking & lines after reading reviews but we got the spot right in front of the place at NO ONE was there at 12:20! Now I know why.. My friend & I split the Combo plate with 2 meats, we got pulled pork & brisket with the Mac & Cheese & sweet potatoes, it was supposed to come with corn bread but they said it wasn't ready (really? at noon?) & we got the hush puppies instead. The brisket was not great & I don't know what they smoke it in but the flavor was just okay, it was somewhat tender but I think Blue Ribbon does it much better, plus the sauce was on the side & you could tell it was not homemade! The pulled pork was better, again not smokey enough & sauce on the side, not happy about that- I thought it should be cooked in the sauce but what do i know..the Mac & Cheese was good, the sweet potatoes, eh, I think they should do sweet potato fries instead but again they were okay. Hush puppies, not authentic, my friend described it best, they were corn bread donuts. Nothing special. The good news is, no one had a stomach ache after so its clean food anyway, just nothing to write home about. PS- one of the girls got the "Piggy" and after watching the Phantom show I thought it was going to be huge, it wasn't and the girl who ate it was not a big person and ate the whole thing, no problem! She said the pork belly was delish but the rest, just okay (oh did I mention she was visiting from Alabama?) yeah she agreed it was not authentic but a good try. We probably wont venture back, Blue Ribbon is closer & yummier..Sorry Red-Eyed Pig!

    This place is AWESOME, one of the best BBQ places around. I had the pork belly sandwich and for $8 or so dollars I came home with a huge delicious sandwich, cheesey spinach (you can choose whatever side you would like) and a pickle. Also, there are friendly people behind the counter which is always a plus. I am sad that I did not try this earlier!

    Went here last night after seeing themon the Phantom. Small spot, young servers, clean. I had a combo plate, with Brisket and Chicken, double mac n cheese sides with the cornbread. to start, for your money, the portions are huge, its a two mealer for most folks. the mac n cheese is very good. Heavy, but the shells hold all that cheese and its a mouthful with every bite. The chicken, according to the phantom is smoked first then fried, that was nice and juicy, but they can keep the brown gravy. i make better gravy in my sleep. The brisket was nice and moist, although i tend to like smaller strips rather than huge slabs,the red eyed bbq sauce is where its at!!! NIce kick after a minute or so. Service was cool, the young lady behind the counter was nice and gave me free sauce, gotta like that...lol. Next will be the ribs and pull pork, maybe this weekend with my son....

    I had the Pulled Pork sandwich with Creamy Coleslaw, that with a half pint of collard greens. All oh so good. (I think I would prefer Sweet BBQ sauce rather than vinegar in a sandwich, it mixes better with the creamy slaw.) Small sampling for first take but I will be back for sure. Thanks for bringing BBQ to Westie!

    Was excited to have a local BBQ joint, then I ordered their food, how do you make ribs that are moist in the middle and dry like wood on the ends if your smoking them??? I get that they are new in town so I cut them some slack and deceided to order again 3 weeks later. I was placed on hold 1 for ten minutes, hung up on 3 times and the next 15 calls went right to voice mail. I am done with Red Eyed Pig.....hire more help for FRIDAY AND SATURDAY nights......

    I went in today for the first time. I was greeted by two very friendly and helpful young people. I ordered the hush puppies and the pulled pork platter with collard greens and fries with the Carolina BBQ sauce. I was afraid I wouldnt like the sauce for the hush puppies, but it was very nice, and different than I imagined. The pork was great and I enjoyed the sauce as well. Collard greens were fresh, flavorful and not overcooked. Fries were typical. I just came back from Memphis last week and this was a nice reminder. I will be back for sure.

    Okay, for those of you who don't know-I'm a GRIT. While I don't claim to be a bbq connoisseur I do have years of bbq experience in almost every state south of the Mason Dixon. And I've sampled many of the restaurants claiming to offer Southern fare in the Boston area. Most left me shaking my head until I finally got a chance to order a meal from the Red Eyed Pig. While some of their menu items leave much to be desired (skip the fried chicken-it's just....no)-the sweet potatoes had WAY too much salt, you won't go wrong with the pork offerings, any of them. Be sure to call ahead to place your order, or go early. The place is rightfully packed. I'm thrilled to have the Red Eyed Pig right around the corner and wish them great success. Success will be easy if they keep up the great work.

    My husband and I would actually give this 3-4 stars. We tried it for the first time today. It's a great addition to the neighborhood and it was a quick takeout. I do wish they'd deliver. The food was very good. My husband tried the baby back ribs and pulled pork. I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw. For sides we had the mac & cheese, baked beans, potato salad. They were all solid. The meet was all very tasty as were the sauces. I really enjoyed the sandwich. I was slightly disappointed by the pickles. I had high hopes since they were featured quite a bit on the menu. They weren't bad, but not great either. We will definitely go back and keep our fingers crossed that they'll start delivering.

    First time ordering delivery . Second time eating overall Let me start off by saying that delivery was fast everything was packaged with care and was extremely clean. Delivery driver was polite and called when he was outside as opposed to ringing the doorbell . I ordered the piggy sandwich and the pulled pork plate . Both were phenomenal , wow talk about crazy portions and great tasting food everything was super tasty and yes very much hot . All in all it took about 30 minutes after ordering and received hot food in a good amount of time . Would highly recommend and will definitely return business .

    Got takeout here a couple different times now, each time hoping it would improve. Unfortunately it did not. The first time I came I got the fried chicken and I can honestly say KFC has better. It had absolutely no flavor and the chicken inside was dry. Most recently, last week I ordered a brisket sandwich with mac and cheese. The brisket was dry and put into two chunks on the bun rather than being shredded, making it difficult to eat. The sauce was too thin and didn't have that great of a flavor. The mac and cheese would have been alright had it not been cold upon arrival but it was creamy. Flavor was decent but nothing to rave about. Don't waste your time. If you're looking for good barbeque head over to Soul Fire in Allston.

    Ordered delivery from here last week, and won't be making that mistake again any time soon. First of all, it took over an hour for everything to show up, far longer than the time frame promised by Foodler. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with the sour cream and chive mashed potatoes, which I would review except that I got baked beans instead. The beans were mediocre, and they weren't what I ordered. It seriously seemed like they just opened a can of kidney beans, and just mixed them with BBQ sauce and some bacon and tossed the whole uninspired mess into a microwave. The sandwich itself was not great, and since it took so long to arrive, the bottom bun was practically soaked through and nearly impossible to hold. The pork itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. My wife got the smoked pork belly sandwich with Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese should always be good at a BBQ joint, but this was not. Overcooked and unappetizing. One of the better parts of the whole meal was the order of hush puppies. They came with this delicious maple sauce, which would have been good if they had thought to give us more than a tablespoon of it. Customer service was also nothing to write home about. They called us after we placed the order, and the person who called asked "did you call us?" We had not called. She insisted we did. It was weird. Then she called back because she had to let us know they were out of the dessert we ordered. There are a lot of good BBQ places in the greater Boston area (Blue Ribbon, Pit Stop, Soulfire). I just wish we had a place of that caliber in my neighborhood.

    First time ever writing a review. I felt like I had to because this is the third time I've ordered there and third time I've been unsatisfied. It's my fault that I keep coming back but I truly wanted this place to be good. This last time was the straw that broke the camels back. The pulled pork was the highlight of the night, if you could call it that. The fried chicken strips are a nightmare and are bone dry. I've had the brisket which is forgettable. The mac & cheese is below average, but the supporting cast make it seem better than it is. Also, quality and cost are not on the same page. Again, first time reviewer, last time patron of this establishment. I truly hate people that write bad reviews, but now I understand.

    Wow. Unbelievable. Ordered at eight thirty didn't get my food until eleven. And I live ten minutes from the place. I called after an hour an a half and they said the order was on its way....an hour later and I finally got it. The food in an of itself was just ok...not abysmal but not good either...I guess hunger is a good cook? But based on the blah food, the awful customer service and the redic long wait...I say pass. Very disappointed.

    This place is addicting. The burger is the best I've had. It's topped with barbecue sauce and a cheesy mashed potato. It comes with two sides. My husband doubles up on the Mac n cheese. We usually order the a pint of brisket too and save it the fridge. He heats up beautifully the next day.

    First time ordering, ordered pickup. They were just wrapping it up when I arrived (10 min late, fine by me). Food smelled amazing, but sadly didn't live up to the smell. I think the consensus is that this place doesn't know when meat is done. We tried a bit of everything since we want to put them through their paces. Everything was about one-third overdone, and yet had weak bbq flavor. What smoke flavor it had was acrid - and I grew up on southern pit beef, which is basically charcoal crust. It's like they use pallet wood or something - just off. Or maybe liquid smoke? I think I can rescue the pulled chicken by marinating with some sauce - too chewy, no one ate it. The ribs were chain-restaurant level. The brisket was actually OK, but it was clearly smoked/dried more after it was sliced, bad call. The sides were so basic I couldn't tell the difference between mashed potatoes and potato salad. Can't recommend. Nothing was gross but I don't think they have the right setup for bbq.

    I wish I could give this place zero stars. My sister and I ordered from this place and it was absolutely atrocious. We ordered through Foodler. I ordered the combo plate with fried chicken and pork belly. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER we had to call them and ask where our food was. They hadn't tried to contact us AT ALL to let us know they were out of pork belly. They just assumed we didn't want our food anymore. They were rude, unprofessional, and plain lazy. It would have taken two seconds to call us and let us know. We ordered at 6:30. We didn't get our food until 9. When we DID get our food, the chicken was absolutely black, had no flavor, and fell apart. The pulled pork was dry and disgusting. The collard greens were halfway to rotten. It was terrible. I will NEVER order from this place again. Not worth the $30 we paid for a combo plate and a hot dog. Don't waste your money.

    Red Eyed Pig is a nice little spot. I like that they added a few outdoor dining tables since it is a very small establishment. Not sure how well this will work in the colder months... Love the spinach salad with chicken along with the hush puppies with orange maple butter. My husband gobbles down their ribs. Desserts are nice especially the banana pudding. Sides are decent sized, spinach and macaroni and cheese are quite tasty. Prices are a bit steep but comparable with other bbq establishments in my opinion. Never had a bad experience of meal. Keep up the good work Red Eyed!

    I want to love you. I'd settle for just liking you. But, you're just too flakey and inconsistent. More often than not, at least one item is missing from my takeout order. Sometimes it's small, like cornbread or beans. Other times, it's been whole meats! And I literally mean more often than not, as in more than 50% of my orders have been messed up. Of course, if you call, they'll promise to give me the item free next time. But when you tell the people in the store next time, they act like I'm crazy. Some of the food is great, like the sausage. The fried chicken is always horrible and soggy.

    Today I spent $50 on bad service and worse food. Kinda want my money back. Not only did I over pay for left overs, the taste was super bad. Today is Monday, and nothing I ordered was fresh. I ordered a half rack of ribs and a pulled pork sandwich. 50 DOLLARS!!!! The ribs tasted like gas, propane, like it was sitting in the oven for 2 days. The greens and beans tasted like they were kept in the same container as the Mac and cheese. The pulled pork was flavorless and dry barely held together by soggy coleslaw bread. And the pickle....I can't even describe. Nothing had seasoning or flavor. Everything was bland. The greens were warm and gritty. It took 15 minutes for my order to be crappy. I should have been warned or stopped my order when I overheard one of the 2 workers say something about not serving something because it was greasy and said "you didn't throw that out?" Then they switched to Spanish. Believe me, if the grease added any sort of flavor I would have taken it. After that little comment I should have questioned their service ethics, now I know I would have been justified. I don't ever leave bad reviews but this place will get your hopes up and over charge you for it. NEVER AGAIN

    Red Eyed Pig what happened to you. Tonight was by far the worst eating experience I have had from you. The meat was so chard it was like chewing charcoal unlike the melt in your mouth pork belly from the past. Sorry to say I think I'll drive to West Newton for Blue Ribbon from here on out.

    This is my 2nd update to my original Red Eyed Pig review. I'll keep it short this time. This time we ordered a full rack or ribs, pulled pork plate, brisket plate, and fried chicken plate. It's very infrequent that I'm this unforgiving but these were the worst ribs I've EVER eaten. I can honestly say, with zero exaggeration, that these ribs were the exact opposite of the ribs I had during my first experience. They were very undercooked which made them seriously tough. We're talking jerky consistency here. Then, they were probably thrown on the grill to heat back up, which resulted in a charred/burnt exterior. I hate wasting food but I actually threw out the remainder of the entire $24 rack after only 2 bites. The brisket was tough but not terrible. Very mediocre. The fried chicken was also mediocre. Fried a little too long and very under-seasoned. The highlight of the meal was the pulled pork which ranks in at above average. The sides varied from subpar to "not bad" but all were a far cry from my first visit. The mashed potatoes were tangy and savory, the best of the bunch. The coleslaw was heavy on the vinegar but not nearly as much as the collard greens which, incidentally, needed a search party to find any hint of pork flavor. The mac n' cheese was also another mediocre offering, still leagues better than the boxed microwavable junk, but not the creamy, cheesy goodness that I remembered from my first visit. This update wasn't as short as I had initially intended but I wanted to prove that I really did give them a fair shake. The only reason I gave them 2 stars instead of 1 is solely because if my first visit, although they probably really deserve to have only 1 star based on their inconsistency alone. I will not be returning for a 4th visit.

    Let me start by saying that I am not one to normally leave negative feedback. That is not until now. I could go in to deep details and a true rant but I will just list the issues. 1. Forgot to send cornbread, butter and chips(with Chili Dog) 2. Pulled Chicken was dry, inedible and was thrown away. 3. Smoky fried Chicken was not seasoned, dry, not smokey and had been in the fryer way too long.. 4. The collards greens lacked flavor and were gritty. Not cleaned prior to cooking perhaps? 5. The beef was dry and freshness debatable. 6. The customer service on the phone reflects a lack of proper training. 7. The butter and cornbread must have been pulled out from the freezer. They were both extremely cold. Let's be honest here. This was my first time there. I was excited for BBQ. I was left disappointed and lighter in the wallet. It is such a shame to deliver such poor quality. Do the owners still have the passion in them? It clearly does not shine through if they do.

    Not sure why this place isn't rated hire! The lack of seating space is a huge bummer but otherwise it's a great place for take-out bbq... especially since there are not a lot of bbq options in the area. Mac & cheese was awesome and would definitely recommend it. I had a pulled chicken platter and my boyfriend had a pulled pork sandwich "meaty bun" - both were awesome.

    Ya this place has the right idea but their process appears non existent. Running out of pasta for Mac n cheese during prime dinner time hours is not even close to a reasonable excuse for waiting 40 for a pick up order to be ready. Sad because their bbq can be really good but it's gonna fail because the low quality workers they're paying low wages have no chance to run a business properly.

    I think this place is mediocre, at best. I had the St. Louis ribs/Brisket combo, with potato salad and beans, my wife had the baby back ribs/brisket combo with the same sides. PRO's: The side dishes were FANTASTIC. BBQ Baked beans are the best, potato salad was also terrific. CON's: The ribs were just 'OK', but the brisket was lousy. The brisket was dry with very little flavor. I was really disappointed. One more thing: The cornbread. This is no small mater to me. I love corn bread, it's one of my favorite parts of eating BBQ. I always order extra cornbread when I get BBQ. This corn bread was stale and dry. It had been wrapped in wax paper, and so it had long since dried out. It was like eating wood. This was a REAL disappointment. All in all, I don't expect to be back to The Red Eyed Pig.

    I so much wanted to like this place and gave it 2 tries, 6 months apart. The ribs were tough and dry and the cole slaw had a plasticky taste so I only ate a couple of bites to confirm what I thought I tasted. The collards are excellent. At some point, somebody is going to come into Boston and make a killing selling serious BBQ, but for now, I can only hope. Sweet Cheeks is just so-so also. I guess I'll just have to keep getting my infrequent BBQ fixes in Austin and from a guy up in Trenton, Maine (of all places!) who is from Texas and has a small restaurant.

    We had take-out from the Red-Eyed Pig a few days ago and, fortunately, didn't check the reviews beforehand because if we had, we probably wouldn't have ordered. After reading the reviews just now, it looks like the main complaint is inconsistency. Lucky for us, we must have hit a good night because the meal was great. Between the three of us, we must have sampled almost everything on the menu. The pulled pork and pork belly were excellent and the brisket was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. If I had a complaint, it was that the ribs were a little tough and dry. The sides - we couldn't get enough of - mac & cheese, sour cream mashed potatoes, caramelized sweet potatoes, collard greens, coleslaw - all perfectly prepared and seasoned. I'm sort of a coleslaw snob - I hate that goopy, sugary stuff that they serve in other places. This slaw was great - fresh, crisp, slightly tart with just a hint of sweetness. "The Piggy" sandwich was a masterpiece - a burger covered with a sampling of all the meats, cheddar cheese and topped with a delicious tomato jam. Even the pickle was amazing! We finished up with two desserts - the banana pudding and the mud pie (attractively served in mason jars) - both were very good. My only comment would be that the whole, raw pecans in the mud pie were sort of soggy. Maybe some chopped candied pecans or crushed toffee candy would be a better alternative. The whole bill for two, two-meat combo plates, each with two sides and cornbread, the burger and two desserts came to just over $50 - more than reasonable for all that food and even leftovers for lunch the next day. All in all, it was an excellent meal - hopefully when we go back (and we will), it will be just much a treat!

    I ordered a three meat combo plate for take out on 11.10.14. I know it is said constantly that geography provides experience barbecue-wise but I am from South Carolina and have eaten quite good barbecue many times in my life. This was not one of those times. I have had barbecue from 3-eyed Pigs before and it was good. This time the meal and the service were awful. I ordered by phone and was instructed to pick up 20-25 minutes later. I arrived at the indicate time only to discover that they just started preparations as I arrived. I was horrified to watch the cooked slice up a cold brisket he retrieved from the fridge and to heat it up in a pie pan on the grill top. I hope the brisket was from the previous day but it might have a week old. The cook sprayed some liquid from a stained bottle on the meat he was warming. i thought this was secret sauce or vinegar that was part of the recipe until I watched him refill it with tap water. My reheated ribs and pulled pork seemed to be of equal vintage. After my plate was prepared, the cashier realized that I had ordered hush puppies that had not been fried so she started them. I watched and waited through this and she saw the frustration on my face as we waited for the hush puppies. Needless to say the leftover barbecue (valued at $20) got cold and the hush puppies were raw. The topper was the missing cornbread from my hastily packed order. These guys need to get back to where they began or quit altogether.

    Great comfort food! I had a hot dog. It was huge. It was served with freshly made potato chips. The sides were very tasty. I was very satisfied with my meal. I'll defiantly go back!

    The food was expensive for takeout, $65.00. The ribs were ok but the chicken dinner was as dry as old shoes and needed gobs of yucky sauce. None of their BBQ sauces were good,They all tasted salty and sweet and unappealing. My fiance and I bought two " cute " desserts in their fridge. They were a ridiculous 6 buck each. The girl at the counter told me it was because i got to " keep the jar".I make jam and I could buy a half dozen glass jars for that. I got home and opened my desert only to have to spit it out.It was spoiled and the banana's were rotten.I just spent six buck on rotten food and I was peeved!! So I called to inform them to pull the poisoned dessert to save someone else the disappointment and cost.The girl at the other end of the receiver made no offer to replace the item with something else or take it off my CC. She just said " sorry Ill look in to it ", and hung up . I will NEVER shop there again and don't you either.Their food is marginal at best and rotten at times .The staff knows little about customer service and how to handle customer complaints besides says " oh well, too bad".     Hubby ordered fried chicken, 1/2 chicken, and the leg had not been cooked throughly, as there was visible blood in the leg portion. Won't go back for while, for sure.

    Let me start by saying that I am from South Carolina and I know what BBQ is. I think some people up here are not sure what "good BBQ" is. With that, this place is very hard to rate. The hushpuppies are the winner of the menu. Fried goodness with maple bacon butter. The meats are tops for BBQ in Massachusetts. I tried Blue Ribbon and a few other places and some of those meats do not compare. The pulled pork is probably the best and most consistent thing on the menu. Good enough to not have to put sauce on. The pork belly is too fatty, but flavorful. The ribs are hit or miss. Can taste the smoke but come off burnt from being thrown on the grill to reheat. The chicken can be good but then can completely miss. When smoked right, it was second behind the pulled pork. The sides are why I struggle to give a rating. Bake beans should not come out of the jar. The collards are bland. They were not cooked down enough and not enough flavor in there, not sure there was any pork or turkey in there (I prefer pork). Potato salad was okay, maybe the best side for me, because it is hard to mess that up. You can definitely tell that not mucb goes into the sides as the meats. Because their best is the some of the best in the state (that I have tasted) I give the benefit of doubt and overlook the bad days.

    I can't speak for much on the menu besides the pulled pork (excellent) and brisket (other-worldy). The place is small, so I've only gotten food to go, but they're friendly and portions are ample. I moved to Roslindale from Newton last Fall and - so far - prefer Red-Eyed Pig to Blue Ribbon.

    What a joke this place is. Second time eaten here about 6 months in between. Figured everyone gets a second chance. Me and two friend went it about 2:00, didn't get out food until 2:40. WE WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE HERE!, One kid cooking. Someone else shredding meat in the corner. The owner was walking around and their was a women doing dishes. Finally get our food and one of the items was cheese fries. This place really took a handful of cold shredded cheese and threw it on top of the fries. I don't think one single PC was even close to being melted. The 2 meat combo was terrible at best bad 2 PC of brisket and ribs. The brisket was Sliced thick and was tough. The ribs had more fat than anything else. The potato salad.... Please stay far far away from. Had no taste what so ever. The beans were acceptable. The owner says what kind of sauce. Then names off 4-5 sauces. How about you have the sauces out so people can try and sample the different kinds. Total came out to about 55.00, and if it wasn't a tip from a job we finished I would of been pretty upset. If your looking for good BBQ please find another place.

    This place now delivers so I was excited to give it a try. Delivery was fast but the food was terrible. Cornbread was dry. My ribs were burnt and tough. The baked beans were nasty. I do not recommend this place. Already tore up the menu!

    If we could give this place 0 stars, we would. We called in at 6:15 PM and were told a half hour to 45 minutes for delivery. Almost 2 hours later we received our food after numerous phone calls and a very unapologetic person on the other end. When the food finally arrived it was luke warm, the portions were small - the smallest I've ever seen, and the best part of the meal was a mediocre, very vinegary bbq sauce. The corn bread was dry and cold. The brisket was on the dry, fatty side and the chicken was bland. The last part of the meal was interesting. We ordered the Mississippi mud pie which had a weird pudding that would have been better if it were out of the package (think Snack Pack pudding, but watered down and gritty). It contained soggy Oreos, very little cake, and nuts that gave it an off texture. My advice would be to save your money, time, and frustration by not ordering from here. I know we won't.

    If I could give no stars, I would. I will NEVER order from here again. The ribs were dry, pulled pork flavorless, didn't complete the items on the salad, and the chicken stayed with my brother-in-law til this afternoon! If in Westie, opt for another place. You've been warned!!

    A lot of people say that they like the BBQ here. I am so biased because The Village Smokehouse in Brookline is BY FAR the best BBQ in the area and what I compare all of my BBQ experiences to. The people that think that the Red Eyed Pig is great BBQ clearly don't know about the Smokehouse. Red Eyed Pig's sauce is not flavorful and the sides are lacking. The staff is friendly, but The Village Smokehouse is sooooo much better!

    Before I begin my review of Red Eyed, allow me to ask this nagging question: Why are Boston BBQ joints so bad? I feel fairly confident that I have been to many BBQ spots throughout the city and they all claim to smoke their meats, that they are flavorable and yadda, yadda, yadda, but they are are just woofing. I really think that well known pitmasters across the country need take notice that Boston (perhaps New England), is an untapped market where people will pay good money to have some legit BBQ. As for Red-Eyed, their fare fell sadly in line with the rest, if not, at the end of the line. Last night, I was hopeful, considering that there was a nice crowd waiting for their takeout. we had waited a good thirty minutes from order to pick up and I was excited to take my bounty home. But alas, at first bite of the chicken and baby back ribs, and the brisket, it was just horrible. Not just bad, but horrible, hurt my feelings horrible, and made me feel that I should have just giving my money as a donation, horrible. No flavor, no smoke, no smoke ring, just char and that does not cut it. No SIr!! Their menu is vast and I suspect that may be part of the problem, The menu needs to be revised. Unless you can really invest in the time to bbq and smoke properly pork belly, brisket, various cuts of ribs, and chicken, be selective in what you can do. If you can do that and you can that really well, you would be justified to bring up your price point; people will come for sure. Otherwise it is just really mediocre, really bad and to me, it is really unfortunate that you are selling this to customers who really just don't know any better or are simply resigned to eating very bad bbq because there is nothing else. Sorry to be brutal, but this had to be called.

    Wow. This was bad. I stopped by after going to the bank. I'd seen the place several times and wanted to try it. We went in; the smell was incredible. Unfortunately, that was the only good thing. I had the brisket sandwich. It was supposed to have "shaved red onion." That was three dinky rings. The brisket was three thick cut pieces. It was really tough. Bought my wife the pulled pork sandwich. She said it dry. There was no BBQ sauce. We got the fries. They were bad. Seriously, stay away.

    Disappointing. Ordered a couple appetizers, a combo plate of 3 meats and a hot dog and fries for my son. First the apps Fried pickles. You get a half dozen for $5. Six Little fried pickle chips for $5. Let that sink in. They're dipped in a batter that resembles way more tempura than southern fried. Too much of it. Burnt on outside, raw on inside. Stuffed jalapeños. $6 for 3? Same. Tempura. Burnt outside. Raw mushy inside. And it was all very bland. The peppers were hot, but the filling was a little lacking too. Well, the combo plate looked okay. Kind of like the snazzy menu. Looks were deceiving. Pulled pork was tasteless. The brisket was tough as leather. Not bad tasting. But tough! The smoked pork bellies resembled more burnt pork chops. The beans weren't even really "done". BBQ takes time. Slow cooking. This stuff seemed rushed and quick. Even the hot dog was burnt, tough and dry. And they forgot the fries! Cornbread was box mix. Dry and blah. Service was equally tough. I know it's a takeout place, but cmon. I was really looking forward to trying it. Just wasted $36 !! Guess I have to travel to Newton or Somerville for good Q.

    I want to start by saying that I'm not some culinary expert restaurateur who claims to know it all. However, I have an honest pallet and will tell it as I taste it! Put simply, I keep it real, so here goes: My meal at The 'Red Eye Pig' was a crushing disappointment! The Bad 1) The 1/2 rack of St. Louis ribs I purchased had absolutely NO seasoning! Meaning, there was no dry rub, herbs, spices, salt, pepper or FLAVOR! The ribs were really BLAH in flavor. 2) The BBQ'd chicken wings suffered from the same treatment of seasoning neglect! 3) The BBQ sauce (which was tasty) was served on the side, ICE COLD! So, I should put ice cold BBQ sauce on my warm ribs? No, I don't think so... the sauce should be served warm. 3) The mashed potatoes just didn't taste right and were borderline nasty! 4) The collard greens were very bitter 5) The corn bread was bland (could've been a bit more sweet) The Good 1) The side of Mac and cheese was good. 2) The ribs were cooked perfectly and had a great bite to them. They were tender and the 'smoke' flavor did come through. In summary, if the 'Red Eye Pig' could just season their meat as well they cook them, they would get my seal approval. Unfortunately, they fell way too short for me to want to go back and one should definitely consider other options before making the trip to Roslindale.

    I used to come here at least once a week for take-out. Sadly since the new owners have come in mid summer The Red-Eyed Pig has taken a sharp turn for the worse. I've given it a fair chance, another 5 or 6 visits but sadly the once inviting employees and tasty bbq have all been replaced with sub-par alternatives.

    This place is pretty good. Been a couple times as I enjoy the local flavor. Much prefer other BBQ, but since this is down the street, can't complain. They give you a ton of food for the price and I can't really complain on the quantity. I almost always have leftovers when I get their combo meals. Their staff is also really friendly and helpful. The meat they give you (tried a few) just seem like fatty cuts. I've gotten their brisket and almost the whole thing was fat. Also there was a lack of seasoning on all of their meats. They give you their BBQ sauce on the side to pour on it to make for it. The sauce was good, but they give you a tiny container for a whole meal and is not close to enough. Good BBQ if I'm lazy and don't feel like going anywhere far, but wouldn't bring a tear to my eye if I never got it again.

    I think I've had everything on the menu but nothing can touch the smoked chicken in my opinion, I've never had better. The whole portion was enormous and will make for some great leftovers the next day. Outstanding.

    Red-Eyed Pig Bbq was really not good due to cooking and holding issues. Electric Cookshack smoker doesn't yield stellar bbq and my mid-day lunch items had been sitting in a steamtable resulting in washed out flavor and inedible ribs. 3-meat combo: St Louis cut ribs were very thin overcooked endbones that were gray, tasteless and shoe leather. I couldn't cut them apart with a plastic knife. Brisket was ok, but no smoke favor or smoke ring. Pulled pork had correct consistency but had no smokiness or bark and was overwhelmed by the black pepper finishing sauce. Spicy bbq sauce was overly sweet with an unpleasant cornstarch thickener. Cornbread was cakey and unpleasantly sweet and was quickly pushed aside. Mac & cheese side was best item today. Very creamy, cheesy shells. Pork Belly Donuts looked delicious, but the insides were gloopy and undercooked, rather than a light dough. They sat like lead balls in my stomach for hours. Friendly service that inquired whether I enjoyed my meal, but I had to tell them 'eh'. Too bad. It's winter and I really wanted good bbq.

    I don't know if this place has changed hands but it was not the same as usual. My husband and I shared the 3 meat platter. We had friend chicken, pulled pork, and baby back ribs. Sides were Cole slaw, and macaroni and cheese. The fried chicken was burnt and tasted terrible, the pork and ribs were ok. The Mac and Cheese tasted sour and the chicken gravy was separated and tasted rancid. We also ordered the fritters with orange maple bacon butter. They were just ok. The butter was half melted but the solid part was weird. For dessert we ordered the peanut butter pie. There was one piece of "pie" and the rest was like a mousse? It was interesting. Overall I'm really disappointed and we probably will not be back.

    A newish joint a bit out of my beaten path. A small store front with five stools and a counter at which to enjoy your meaty haul. A wide ranging menu includes numerous creative appetizers, salads, buns and smoked meats. Green chili and pork belly donuts with garlic aioli, smoked paprika and farm cheese come a little golden fried balls of dough. Try them at least once, they are delicious. St. Louis ribs come wet sauced and have a very nice pink smoke color and flavor. Juicy and tender with a thick smoked skin. Thick and meaty, not to be missed. Brisket is thick sliced with a nice layer of fat but was served dry and overcooked on this visit. The pork belly has an incredibly crisp outside layer covering a thick, smoky and complex layer of meat. Excellent usage of rub and a well smoked in flavor. Creamed, cheese spinach is one of a kind. Creamy with no mushy texture, the spinach is prepared to withstand the addition of cheese and cream. My favorite side from the meal. Mac and cheese is similarly cheesy with a good amount of crispy bread crumb crust. Creamy coleslaw is not overly thick. Corn bread comes sweet and moist. Can not wait to return.

    Once again, I set myself up for BBQ disappointment. The food was AWFUL!!! I couldn't believe people were actually ordering and eating it. I got the ribs and chicken the ribs were blah and the chicken was raw. Thank goodness I was able to feed the food to my dogs, otherwise I would have been really upset. I think we all have a different idea or what good BBQ is. Once you have the real thing, you will know impostors. These guys were imposters.

    Warning: we used to love this place, but the ownership changed in mid-July and the previous owners apparently took all the recipes with them. The fried chicken used to be crispy and smoky, but is now more like oversalted shake-n-bake. The gravy used to be thick and tasty, now it is inedible, sour-tasting brown oil. My husband said the brisket was not as good as it used to be either. The biggest insult, though was the cornbread - the pieces you used to get were dense and almost too big, now they are laughable tiny squares like someone made a box of Jiffy mix at home. The sides seem similar to how they were previously prepared, but really bummed that the overall meal quality has gone downhill so much. The new owners won't be in business for long if they don't make improvements.

    Decent BBQ - had better and worse. There is no seating only take-out and parking on Centre street is typically doable around dinner time. We tried three meals. The brisket was okay. The pulled pork was the highlight - outstanding flavor and seasoning was just right. Didn't need the sauce that was provided on side. The baby back ribs were a bit dry, but overall tasty. We had three different sides - collard greens were very good. The crinkle fries were seasoned to a delicious flavor, the Mac n cheese were shells rather than elbows or penne. Just okay. Lastly, there was the corn bread, again not bad. It was good but nothing spectacular. A good BBQ joint. I'd go back but I prefer Tennessee's in Braintree.

    My husband and I just ordered from here and will definitely not do so again in the future. First, half of the order got cold while we watched a team of teenagers reheat already prepared food. The batter on the fried chicken was burnt and tasteless, the gravy was inedible and the brisket was extremely fatty. Between the 4 sides we ordered, the only good one was the cheesy spinach. Most of the food we tossed out, it was a total waste of money.

    Stumbled upon this place by accident when picking up my kitchen mixer from the repair guy next door. The meats (sausage and chicken) were excellent. The beans were fantastic. But the collard greens were too salty to even eat. I mentioned it to the guy at the counter and he said was "no one has ever said that before". If that's the case then someone f-ed up that day. I would go back when in the area. Solid BBQ.

    Clearly, Abby J does not know what she is talking about! I live in Brookline and Village Smokehouse is the worst bar-be-que I have ever had. I can walk to Village Smokehouse, but I drive over to West Roxbury for Red Eyed Pig. I grew up in the south, went to school in Cental Fla., Georgia and Tenn., and I can tell you, Red Eyed Pig is the real bar-be-que.

    We will never order from this restaurant again. We live on the edge of Dedham so our delivery options are limited. Therefore when we saw this new option we were really excited to try it but it will certainly be the last time we ever order from here. To begin with our food arrived 40 minutes after the grubhub promised time but it only got worse from there. Despite two calls to the restaurant to try to find out where our food was the person who answered the phone never appeared to care, was rude both to me and my father, and never even apologized. Then when we finally got our food it was disappointing too. The corn bread was dry, the fries overdone, the mac and cheese mediocre at best, and the mississippi mud pie completely inedible. And to top it off the hush puppies that we ordered were not even included. Even when we called to try to get a refund for the hush puppies we were simply told to call grubhub that it was not their problem and again no apologies. I would caution anyone considering throwing their money away on this establishment.

    I so wanted to like this place as the employees were so friendly and nice, and their ribs do have great smoky flavor, but alas, I cannot. The food here left a sour taste in my mouth, literally. Came here for takeout on a cold Friday night. (Note to those who have not been here before, this is pretty much a takeout place. There are only a few stools by the window to sit.) I ordered the Fried Chicken & Rib Combo w/ Potato Salad and the Cheesy Spinach and my cohort ordered the Pulled Pork & Brisket Combo w/ Potato Salad and Mac, the Combos also each came with a huge chunk of cornbread. Got their Chocolate Peanut Butter pudding in a jar for dessert. The sides were all good enough. My fav of the 3 was probably the Potato Salad. Their ribs were also pretty good as they had great smoky flavor and were very juicy. The brisket and pulled pork were a little meh, the brisket was chewier than expected. The fried chicken was bland, and the side of gravy it came with was extremely salty. The gravy tasted like caramelized salt essentially (if that's even possible). The barbecue sauces were okay, nothing special and probably comparable to store bought sauces. The worst part of the meal, however, was the peanut butter pudding dessert. When I opened the jar, it basically exploded on me. I got peanut butter cream all over my clothes! I should have known that was a bad sign, but stupid me decided to taste the dessert remaining in the jar anywho, and it was sour. The pudding had obviously gone bad, hence the explosion and sour taste. I will give 2 stars because the ribs were good and the employees nice, but I don't think I'll be venturing back.

    Grew up on Blue Ribbon BBQ. Those are where my standards lay. I live close to the Red Eyed Pig so I was hoping I would love it and end up being a regular. Went once, hated it, not going back. The food is made with no love. Dried out pork. Weak slaw. Mac and cheese must have been sitting there all day before I walked in for dinner. But the real killer was the cornbread. Don't bother with BBQ if u can't even make decent cornbread. Very disappointing meal.

    I've been on a hiatus of writing reviews for quite sometime, my B. Well after moving to Rozzie and sampling the area I wanted bbq after a serious bbq drought. When I came in I noticed a lot of teenagers working which normally doesn't bother me but something seemed off to me but I didn't listen to my gut, later on my gut would pay, and ordered anyways. It took awhile to get my combo meal of pulled pork and ribs but when I came back in the restaurant I saw them putting the pulled pork into a container and the liquid coming out of it again didn't look right to me but I still didn't listen to that inner dialogue saying "Dude you may get sick from this". So i threw caution to the wind paid and went home to eat the toughest and seriously lacking any sort of flavor ribs. The pulled pork was equally flavorless and rather fatty and the cornbread was dry and salty. Knew it was terrible tasting but wasn't ready for how sick I got for the next 8 hours. I'll leave it at sick but be warned I had a terrible terrible night. Never again!!!

    Inconsistent at best. One night you'll have the best BBQ meal you've ever tasted while the next time your meal may be inedible. The recipes for the Mac & Cheese and Cheesy Spinach always seem to change as I don't think I've ever tasted anything that varies more from week to week. There are 5 sauces and these sauces are usually amazing, I highly suggest the mustard based one. Overall this place is a good local joint if you are looking for something quick & easy and don't feel like venturing to Boston, Newton or Somerville. Living close by we frequent the Red Eyed Pig as its 5 minutes away. Whether the food is good or not is based on a coin flip. The rotisserie chicken is good but a tad dry and the brisket is usually uber thick and covered in fat; however the burgers are awesome. This place honestly befuddles me as it has the potential to be a game changer in West Roxbury. While the prices are a tad high, the portion size is decent.

    Review from a "Southerner" (if I can claim that anymore): The cornbread is not moist. So I guess this is more midwest cornbread than anything? It's a bit too crumbly for my taste, no sugar added, no buttered awesomeness. I figure that this is intentional since I've had it twice now. It's just a tall block of bread. Southern cornbread generally goes for the soft, most mixture rather than crumbly. I suppose the equivalent of the crumblyness of the cornbread from Red-Eyed Pig is gluten-free baked goods? Not bad, but not ideal for someone who is a faux (or real) connoisseur of breads. The meat is pretty good; they smoke the brisket and chicken well. The mashed potatoes are pretty delicious, but the greens are just really bland, boring, uninspired and should just be taken off the menu. I haven't had such unflavorful "green stuff" in quite a while, and what's even more surprising is that the greens also contain meat... so, where's the flavor at? The wings are decent; flats are much more flavorful than the drums. I like Red-Eye Pig because of the time to get the food, the amount they give you, but it's not a restaurant to eat at because of limited space. Workers are delightful and patient, and given the fact that I haven't explored their entire menu, they're "A-OK" in my book.

    The foods here is AWFUL, I give it NO STARS and would NOT suggest this place to my worst enemy.. I don'y know how old the other post are and heard great things about this place.. I was so excited to visit this past Sunday and was extremely disappointed.. The cole slaw was nasty, the baked beans (red kidney beans) over sweetned, the ribs were under cooked and the brisket over cooked.. Very bad, don't know if it's new manangement but save you $20, almost spent mor but was told they weren't selling any deserts of any kind that day...really ? Its all hype and not worth the drive and definately not worth the $20, i gave it to my dog... Dont listen to the old post, this place sucks and had no heat and the staff act like I was bothering them for coming in.. NO BUENO

    I don't understand what happened to this place. When we first moved here a few years ago they had delicious food [and we have high standards, lived in the south for a long time]. Swung by tonight for takeout and ordered brisket and a burger. The brisket was so tough I didn't even eat it and had a gritty texture. Fries were undercooked. This was after waiting over 40 minutes for the food. There were 4 people working there, and only one poor guy trying to manage all the orders....felt pretty bad for him.

    This brand new establishment in West Roxbury is going to make it's mark in the town. Red-Eyed Pig is a small takeout joint from the owners of Blue-Eyed Crab. I have been dying to come here and for them to run out almost everyday their first week, is definitely a good sign! Speaking of signs, their bad-ass Pig Logo is the best! My brother and I waited patiently for the Pulled Pork Sandwich and Pork Belly Sandwich. At $8-9 sandwiches and their Pit Platters from $10-$14, this is cheap food at its finest. These "sandwiches" are meant to be open style and the Pulled Pork was delicious! You can taste the smoky flavor and it does not have the overload of sauce which some will be surprised with but the meat can stand alone. The Pork Belly is the Meat Candy sandwich of the world! It had crisp, burnt ends and it was m-o-i-s-t, with enough fatty goodness. To bring in the sweetness, it was topped with tomato jam. With three slices of pork belly, it's very filling. Their cheesy spinach is a lactose intolerant nightmare but a piece of heaven for others. Their mac and cheese is baked with breadcrumbs with that home-style Velveeta cheese taste which can go either way. Their portion sizes are decent for the price. The staff is friendly and once they get all their kinks out on timing and ordering, this is going to be a very popular joint.

    A great addition to West Rox?-this is a great addition to America. After battling with sub-par BBQ in the Boston area I am finally glad someone knocked Blue Ribbon off their pedestal (as if it was that hard). This place is amazing. By far the best brisket around- 2 huge nearly 1" thick tender smoky flavorful slices. The North Carolina style pulled pork was spot on as well. As important as the meat is for a BBQ joint, the sides are often what can break ties. The collard greens were delicious and cooked perfectly. The potato salad was great as well. Heck the cornbread was even better than the standard. The hush puppies with the orange maple bacon butter were downright heavenly. My arteries weren't as happy as my stomach but they will get over it. Can't wait to go back and try the pork belly sandwich. What other BBQ place serves pork belly? If you don't like this place or think Red Bones is good BBQ then you should be ordering Chinese instead. The staff was super friendly and the prices are right on par with any other BBQ joint. A two-meat combo could feed a family of 3... Keep doing what your doing REP and I will keep coming back for more.

    Poor Service. I was asked to place an order a day in advanced so I did. On pick up day I was told "I see your order It's not ready", "Not a big Deal place your order again it will only take 40 minutes". Disappointed by the young lady poor attitude and indifference. Red Eye Pig should not request to place orders in advance if they are not going to comply just ask to call back the day of.

    Called up to try to place a take out order since my husband had heard good things about this place. The person I spoke with put me on hold (not a big deal) and then when they finally got back they were distracted, putting other people on hold while I tried to order. I tried to order a combo plate and the exchange went something like this. 'I'd like a combo plate with fried chicken (oh, we're out of fried chicken), 'smoked chicken?' (oh we're out of that too), 'ok I'll have baby back ribs (oh I guess there are none of those either, must have been a busy weekend). This was on a Wednesday! Very strange, do they only make food once a week?? Ended up not ordering anything. Plus the person on the phone didn't even seem to care that much. A BBQ place out of BBQ food....we won't be trying this place again.

    Not a fan. Sauce was disappointing. Way overpriced for what they give you. The biggest miss was the banana pudding. As a novelty, they sell it in a mason jar. But this thin, overly sweet , banana-less concoction was inedible. I ended up tossing it, jar and all. Go elsewhere if you are looking for good BBQ.

    Unfortunately, I must agree with the native Texan's review here, although I would never hold a Massachusetts bbq joint to Texas bbq standards. I probably should've known something was wrong as I watched the desultory look on the 17 year old's face as he prepared my combo plate. I think he even wrinkled his nose as he added the collards. There is clearly not a lot of passion for "Downhome Southern Barbecue" in this place. I could go into detail about what exactly was not good about the food, but so much of it tasted so wrong that it just doesn't seem worth it. Suffice it to say that I ended up throwing away most of my combo plate. This was pretty tragic since I'd been looking forward to the meal much of the day, as I waited for the place to open at 2pm.     Peanut butter bacon cookie. Nuff said. You need to try this. I wish it were a cookie i can get in my neighborhood but it isn't so i guess my cholesterol level is safe for now. Its moist on the inside with nice crispy salty pieces of bacon and nice and crunchy on the outside. Sweet peanut butter and salty bacon go very well together. The brisket sandwich is very good as well. Tender and not dry in my sandwich.

    Tried this on a whim while visiting family. The servings were gigantic, bring your appetite! The Brisket was amazing, the pork tender, and "The Piggy" was something to behold. The three of us loved the BBQ and the sides were great (what we ate of them anyway)! do yourself a favor and go here if you are close, you won't be disappointed!

    Hands down some of the worst food I've ordered. I've tried this place twice and both times I ended up throwing the food out with more than half left. The BBQ sauces were basically tomato sauce. The brisket had more fat than meat and it clearly hadn't rendered down. Corn bread? More like corn brick. Baked beans? Baked blech! I'd eat Smokey Bones ribs before this place and SB ribs aren't good. I can make better BBQ in my sleep on my char griller. I'd put my ribs up against theirs any day of the week.

    This place has been open a few months, wished I'd tried it sooner. Only been once, so thought about reserving a 5 star review until I'd tried it a few times, but what I got today deserves 5. Lunch time, got the pulled pork sandwich and mac and cheese side for $8. Huge portion of pulled pork, falling off the soft tasty potato (I think?) roll. I forgot to get a side of sauce, so I was worried, but I didn't need to be, the pork was spiced and tender, to the point of not really needing sauce. Quick lunch solution with a big portion. There aren't many good BBQ places in Boston, this is one of them.

    The rewards are worth the wait. This is an easy 5 stars if they figure out how to manage a rush. My order took 20 minutes longer than expected (45 minutes total) and while I was waiting, they ran out of cornbread. They were subbing hush puppies for almost 15 minutes but just as they started assembling my order, the whole restaurant filled with the sweet smell of fresh cornbread and I ended up getting the very first slices of a beautiful golden loaf seconds after it emerged from the the oven. They gave us 6 pieces of bread for 2 half orders (pulled pork) and 2 full orders (baby back and St. Louis). The girl behind the counter was apologetic and thanked me for waiting 3 or 4 times. The pulled pork was barbecued bliss, tender and smoky enough to stand on it's own, but I drenched it in sweet sauce because I love drenching things in sauce. The roasted sweet potatoes were soft and simple but delicious, my favorite side. The cheesy spinach is excellent but very heavy. Don't start with this if you want to last through your meat, and definitely don't try to convince yourself (as I did) that this is a healthy green vegetable.

    I have been psyched to try this place, and finally did this week. All in all, I am realy happy about the number if independent restaurants opening in Westie, and I want to support them. But there were two main problems with this place: 1) their open pit barbecue sauce tasted like warmed ketchup. And I only ordered it because I asked the guy at the register which sauce was best. Not a great sign for a bbq joint if I prefer to go home and put store-bought sauce on my food! 2) It was hot as hell this week, and so we and a couple other folks were waiting for our orders outside instead of in the store (it's a really small store, and the grills and smokers added to the heat -- I actually felt pretty bad for the employees, but there's nothing to be done on a 95 degree day). The employees never called names or anything, so our food actually sat on the counter while we waited, and waited, and waited, just because none of the workers looked up to tell anyone their food was ready. And we were only about ten feet further away than we'd been in the store, so we could see and hear them perfectly. Pretty annoying. We ordered a 2 meat plate with pulled pork and ribs, side of mashed and mac'n'cheese. It was pretty good, and we thought it was a good size meal for 2 people, but without a good bbq sauce there's no real reason for me to go back.

    Well I think three stars is pretty accurate to describe my visit. I ordered the brisket platter, I chose to grab a brownie and a bottle of water. Price pretty normally for BBQ and it was just about $20. I didn't realize how small it was and that my friends and I were going to have to drive back to my house to eat our food. I wasn't too crazy about the brisket, I felt it was on the dry and super thick side. I personally like thinly sliced pieces. The sauce I chose, spinach and cornbread was okay. The mac and cheese was probably one of the best I've ever had out to eat, I could have just done a whole order of that. My friends liked the pulled pork, but since I don't eat that I couldn't really care too much. In the end the mac and cheese was so awesome and everything else I had was meh.

    This place was pretty good. Stopped in one night to check it out. I have had real BBQ down in the heart of Texas and other parts of the south. This definitely cant hold up against those places, but when I walked in I didn't expect it to. So i went in pretty open minded I thought the meat was soft and well cooked. The flavor of their rubs and smoke was ok but mild. Honestly I think the worst part was their sauce. If they just worked on improving their BBQ sauce so it doesn't all taste like it has a ketchup base then I think they would start getting better reviews. The sauce taste like its out of package and not homemade.

    Seriously, amazing. The smoked pork belly was divine. It was so tender and perfectly cooked...better than anything I had living in Houston. Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were superb. I typically go to Village Smokehouse in Brookline, but REP is bringing some hefty competition here. I agree with another review that the wings were not what you expect. They were ok, but I may not get them again. Here is my only feedback: The desserts look larger in the pictures than they are. There was a lot of extra air in the container so although it was tasty, I'm not sure it's worth $6. Will be going back!

    I LOVE this place!! The food is fantastic and the counter girls are very attentive, personable and gracious! I'm going with a 5* rating tonight. Let's get to the review... For my second time here I ordered the 2 meat combo consisting of Beef Brisket and special for the evening, Smoked Turkey Breast along with 2 sides and I went with the mac & cheese and creamy spinach. All 4 choices were delicious!! The turkey came with an amazing cranberry sauce spread and the brisket was melt in your mouth good. My only complaint was that the wait time once I ordered was a tad bit excessive and apparently the place had been featured on a tv show earlier in the morning so they got a bit backed up. I also needed to have it reheated again which took some time but the food was so good that it was really no big deal for me. For dessert I got one of the Miss Mud Pie's to take with me, they comped it due to the wait I had which was very nice of them and I enjoyed it when I got home and could stuff some more goodies down my gullet. :-) The restaurant is primarily a take-out establishment with only a few stools located in front of the window which they are more than welcome to accommodate you dining at. Overall I love it here. Just wish it was closer to my home instead of being 45 minutes away!! However, I will continue to visit as often as possible!

    One word: Yummy! We desperately needed variety for take out & this is super tasty food. We ordered the smoked chicken, baked beens, collard greens, pulled pork sandwich...it all went. The chicken came with gravy, I'm not much of a gravy person, but this gravy is to die for. The bbq sauces are super yummy. It is brand new & wildly popular, so there can be a long wait for take out on a weekend, but it is well worth it. It is going to be hard not to make this a weekly splurge...it's really that good!

    I'm a native Texan now living in West Roxbury, so I should be the Red-Eyed Pig's ideal customer. I want to like this place, but it has some serious problems. I stopped in on a busy Friday evening and ordered the two meat combo, St. Louis ribs and brisket, with potato salad and collard greens as my sides. I ordered iced tea to drink, as one generally does in the South, and was cautioned that they only had sweet tea. I consented. Mistake #1. The sickeningly sweet abomination greeting me when I took my first sip on my way out of the Red-Eyed Pig made me immediately concerned for my health. It tasted less like sweet tea and more like the bottled concentrate that forms the basis for Thai Iced Tea, only without the milk added to dilute it. It was going to give me instant tooth decay, diabetes, or both, if I kept drinking it. I poured it out on the street next to Holy Name. I can find decent iced tea at every McDonald's franchise. This is inexcusable. I probably would have been more forgiving about the rest of the meal had the iced tea incident not happened, but it did, so here we go. Ribs: strangely, two of the ribs were uncut. I received no plastic utensils in my brown paper bag of meat. Fortunately I ate it at home. They were very tender and had clearly been smoked for a long time, which I appreciate. But the smoke flavor was strangely artificial, and they were undersalted. Good barbecue needs no sauce, but these ribs did, so I cracked open the container of foodservice "Open Pit" BBQ sauce that had been poured from a big jug right in front of me on the counter as I waited for my order. (What, you can't make your own sauce? For shame.) It tasted like foodservice BBQ sauce. The brisket was much like the ribs, tender yet undersalted. Kind of a bitter aftertaste from the smoke. Cut in like half inch slabs too, which is way too thick. The collard greens were the star of the meal, deliciously saturated with bacon and vinegar. Perfect. The potato salad was a bit unconventional, heavy on the vinegar. Actually, now that I think about it, they made German Potato Salad and served it cold instead of warm. Merely ok. They were nice enough to include a slice of white bread in with my order, but put it on the bottom of the styrofoam tray so it was a soggy mess by the time I got home. Really? Evidently this place was created by people from the Blue-Eyed Crab in Plymouth. That figures, since I can guarantee it isn't being run by someone with a solid knowledge of barbecue. It will probably do huge business anyway.

    Very disappointing I was excited to see this place open and so apparently was the rest of the neighborhood because they have been slammed since they opened. I waited until the hoopla died down and tried it. I am not impressed. St Louis Rib- Full Rack was enough for me and my fiance for dinner. Smoke is a bit overwhelming Sweet Sauce-average Coleslaw-Forgotten, they refunded my card no questions asked the next morning. Mashed Potatoes- I wasn't crazy about the texture, my fiance liked them. The taste was good. Baked Beans-They use kidney beans so not what I expected. Lots of onion. I really liked them. Spicy Wings- 6 half wings for 8 dollars? Not spicy, blue cheese is bland. Neither of us liked them enough to even finish the tiny portion. Cornbread-Stale Banana Pudding-Cute concept, can see real vanilla bean but the vanilla wafers are so soggy they disintegrate. The taste was good but a half pint glass with maybe 6 bites. Again very overpriced for takeout. My fiance liked the food enough we will try it again. I hope I am more impressed next time.

    There aren't many great BBQ places to speak of in Boston, though Red-Eyed Pig is definitely one worth mentioning!! The place itself is small, with a take-out counter and just a few stools for seating by the window. You can see straight into the kitchen to watch your order being made, and if that doesn't keep you occupied, there are interesting and creative wall decorations to check out, including butcher's diagrams and the menu board, which is made from slate and an unfinished wood frame. The portions are gigantic, so you might want to share a platter with someone, or expect left overs for a week (seriously). I've had their pulled pork and ribs, both of which were piles of meaty heaven. For sides, the crinkly fries, cheesy spinach, and mashed potatoes were awesome. My only complaint about Red-Eyed Pig is that the sauce is always served on the side, rather than being used to cook the meat. Although the meat was still tasty, and the sauce itself was good, this arrangement seems really inauthentic. They also don't have a super, super spicy BBQ sauce option- totally disappointing for hot sauce lovers. If you fall into that category, be sure to stock up on Tabasco on your way home.

    The star is missing because the dessert's are to expensive,cut it in half charge me half,done.The staff is great and friendly,the exposed kitchen cool.My sweet potatoes we're perfect a little cool but done so well,the pulled pork excellent.My bun um-um better than the UPS guy.Coleslaw a little over dressed like the Ups guy.The sauce sorry I could swear I could taste HFCS(high fructose corn syrup).

    Third time here, the place is a charm. Real attention to detail, unique formulations. Imagine, five different sauces on the side, all great tasting. Thick cuts, meats not fatty or gristly. Cooked just to tender, not to dried-out stage. Real smoke flavor, could enjoy any entree without sauce. The sides I tried were exceptional. Unique mac-and-cheese with shells and toasted bread crumb topping, luscious cheesy spinach. Collards with bite, and not drenched in sour water as in other places. And I liked the banana pudding, cute Mason jar and all--plenty of fruit, thick consistency, just sweet enough. Suddenly I'm not missing Jake's Boss BBQ or Beantown BBQ any longer.

    I feel bad that Red Eyed has gotten some junky reviews...it is a new place, give them time to work it out! Anyhow, ate there for lunch yesterday. Got the 3 meat platter with 2 sides. All the meats were very good. The ribs (Baby Back, they have two kinds) were fall off the bone and smoky. The beef brisket was tender and flavorful. The pulled pork was tasty and the vinegar sauce was a welcome addition. I love vinegar sauce anyhow...mmmm. The mac and cheese was good. Nothing crazy but solid. And the coleslaw- someone complained about the 'weird spice' in it below, but my hubby and I really thought it added something delicious and was not your run of the mill slaw. It was crisp and not overly drenched in its sauce. The cornbread was a little dry and portions are modest but I will without a doubt come back here! Also, I'd say take out only, there is only like 5 stools at a small counter.

    Ordered for the Pats v Tebow slaughter, so BBQ seemed appropriate. St. Louis style ribs were meaty, fatty, perfectly smoked and well seasoned. Pork Belly fritters - my baby mama... Smoked hot wings - good, a bit different that what I'm used to from wings, but really tasty. Pork belly sandwich - didn't eat it as a sandwich, so I can't really tell, but the pork belly itself was cooked perfectly, if a bit under seasoned. Collards - just like my momma made em, if I were from the south, which I'm not, but it was good. Mac n cheese - tasty, really their own take on the MnC experience. I liked it. Complaints: I only got one piece of cornbread with an order over $50. Weak. I called on Thursday to find out if I should order early for the game and was told to order by five. I did, and they had already run out of baby backs... weak. The sauces were good, but there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference between the three red sauces. I'll order here again for sure and I'm hoping they respond well to the constructive criticism they've been receiving here on yelp.

    I'll eat here again, and I wanted to give this a 5 star rating. Here's what kept Red-Eyed Pig from perfection. The bads: -The Cornbread was bland, and dry. Not a deal-breaker, but cornbread should be easy to get right. -The meat was a bit dry. Again, not a deal-breaker as they have a wide variety of sauces and you can buy extra. -In reading some of the other reviews, it's either 'All or Nothing' and perhaps they have an issue with consistency? -Price; I understand times are tough, but they could tone the price down a smidge. $24 for a full-rack of baby back ribs is a bit steep ("Best I can offer you is $18-20" - as I would imagine being said by Rick Harrison, here) The Goods: -It's true the meat was a bit dry, but it was still very tasty. -Sides were very, very delish! -Although pricey, the portions were 'Murican-sized My advice to them; keep it consistent and lower the price on certain items by a buck or two, or offer a coupon/incentive for regulars.

    We've waited a few weeks to go, to let the joint settle in and get its groove on...oh boy, was it worth the wait!!! The BBQ was delicious as were the sides! We got the combo meat plates with smokey fennel sausages, pulled pork, chicken, baby back ribs, Texas brisket, mac and cheese, collard greens and creamy spinach...mmm, mmm, good! Both of us cleaned our plates! It's hard to believe that such a small place can produce so much food so efficiently and with such flavorful success! We did have to wait 45 minutes for our order (on a Saturday night) but who cares?? We didn't mind, and it seemed neither did the other folks hanging out. A small price to pay for a superior meal. Can't wait to go back and also to check out their sister restaurant the Blue Eyed Crab in Plymouth :)

    Oh thank GOD there is a BBQ place down the street from me! No more trying to find Blue Ribbon in Newton, or traveling to Davis Square to Redbones. Absolutely loved the hush puppies with the orange maple bacon butter. Who knew it could be so tasty?! The pulled pork with the correctly made NC vinegar sauce was delicious. The coleslaw was not drippy like some places, and collards were cooked to perfection. This made a very cranky person happy - comfort food at it's very best!!!

    I had to go to this place twice before writing my review. Is it good? no... is unbelievable! IDK if is the weather, (so damn cold) but every bite tastes like summer time! I only had the smoked chicken and beans because of a diet I'm following, but God they were sooo good! My boyfriend had the pulled pork, the coleslaw and sweet potatoes he also find them amazing. The service was great, the waiting is reasonable and it looks very clean. Love the hot sauce and all the options in the menu. Def a go to for BBQ, Only wish is that they had table, but is a small spot so I will take it home and will recommend any given day!

    Best barbecue in Boston? thats like claiming the best pizza in Mexico. If they can't do pulled pork don't bother with anything else. No smoke in the meat, it might as well have been done in a crock pot. Their cook-shack smoker if its the only rig they have is seriously undersized for any volume smoking, which explains the inconsistency complaints. Raves about their sides are laughable. They may be very good, I didn't try any but then I don't go to a BBQ joint just because I like their cornbread and sweet tea. The quest for edible BBQ in Boston for this Texan continues. I await the day I find some.

    Very happy to have a good barbecue place in Boston. We usually go to Red bones. Red eye is less expensive and really good. The lime blue cheese sauce for the wings was delectable. The brisket was tender. My only complaint is for a to go joint they could do a better job of wrapping the order. It was put in a paper too go container and really should have been wrapped in aluminum foil first. At least that's the way I've had food wrapped from other places. Our food was cold when we got it home.

    My bf and I love this place! Every time we go, I get the pulled pork with the Mac n' cheese (my favorite... Yum!) and the creamy cheesy spinach. The corn bread is to die for! It's so moist and delicious. I love how all the desserts are in mason jars. I really enjoy the chocolate peanut butter, apple crisp and mud pie! I think they need to add a red velvet dessert.

    This place has been open 7 weeks and has been packed since day 1. We finally tried it out and I'm officially excited we have serious BBQ in the 'hood. Sides were the stars: collard greens were acidic and smoky from vinegar and bacon. Cheesy spinach was great, homemade baked beans and Mac and cheese. My baby backs were sorta dry as was the brisket. But the flavors were delish and some sauce helped. Had a good chat with the girls at the counter who were incredibly friendly and clearly enthusiastic about the quick success. Phantom Gourmet has already shot there! There are some kinks that they're working out. Totally expected with high volume and a new business. We'll be back for sure.

    This place is fantastic I came in for lunch on Monday and order a two meat combo with Stl Ribs and pulled pork. The counter person was so helpful and walked me through what the difference was of everything and she seemed to know a lot! For my sides, I got collard greens, bbq beans, and i also got a 1/2 pint of sweet potatoes. ALL OF THEM WERE FANTASTIC!!! I ordered a sweet tea because I saw the girl making it and looked awesome. I went to south carolina this summer and it reminded me of the sweet tea down there! The counter girl told me that they order the tea bags from the south and have them shipped up here! Very authentic!! I would defiantly recommend this place the people are so nice and they are putting out great food!

    I really like this place. They have excellent meats and sauces, try the gold! I also enjoy the sides. Great attitude by all the folks that work there. It is really just a take out place with very limited seating. I think that they could improve on some of the salad items and consistency of those items. I also think that they could keep the space a little cleaner, but if you want good down home BBQ, friendly service and a cool t-shirt, head to the Red Eyed Pig. So glad to have the option so close to home!

    We liked the sides better than the meat. The spicy sauce was pretty decent, too. Not a bad experience overall, but I can't see myself going back very often. The meat just wasn't that flavorful or tender. Wish I could give it a better review.

    Absolutely delish! Been looking for a local BBQ joint and so glad they are here. Had pork belly and st. louis style ribs, smoky, juicy, and flavorful. Several BBQ sauce choices to pick from. Had creamed spinach and Mac and cheese as sides, also very good. Am looking forward to heading back and trying more pig-tastic dishes!!

    Just ate "here" tonight and I was generally quite impressed. First the sides, which were what set this place apart from other BBQ joints in town: the beans were among the best I've had--big red pintos with plenty of bacon and what I believe were red jalapenos to give them a nice kick. The slaw had a very interesting spice also that I couldn't quite place but was very nice. The hushpuppies were great as others have noted, the maple-bacon-orange butter is what makes them sing. How about a jalapeno version? The sweet with the spice would make them utterly irresistible I think. Now, on to the meats: we had baby back ribs, brisket, and crispy smoked pork belly. The pork belly was superb, the ribs solid. The brisket flirted with being dry but was very tender and a light dip in one of their sauces (we had spicy red eye and their mustard-based one, both of which were excellent) made their slight dryness unnoticeable. I'm excited to try their chicken next time. They were friendly and fast and I'm very excited to have good "Q" in the neighborhood.

    Great meal. I've had the 2 meat combo twice (brisket and pulled pork) with Sweet potatoes and Mac n Cheese. Meats were juicy and tender; sides were very good; although the second time I went the sweet potatoes were undercooked - probably a result of the crowds. I agree the corn bread is more of an after thought, although they give you so much, its not really needed. I also had the hush puppies one time; again, like the cornbread a little bland, but the orange flavored butter was great. Great to see a family-owned restaurant doing well.
