Amazing Amazing! From the soulful tunes they have playing in the kitchen to the OUT OF THIS WORLD ginger slaw and tea selection, everyone who comes through the door is sure to find something on the menu that will leave them hungry for more. The Sunday brunch is great too, chicken, collards, grits, french toast - I want it all! Since this place is in Dudley, you won't have to deal with the typical Boston brunch crowd (what a refresher!) plus there's a huge lot and free wifi. It also feels great to know you're being served food by young men (and the occasional woman) who've been given a second chance to make something of their future. A true "feel good" cafe with seasonable and sustainable soul food!

Wholesome, delicious, and healthy food that's jam-packed with good vibes. Plus, it's for a great cause. I'm stoked to be able to start coming to this place more often :)

Best veggie burger in Boston, and possibly the world. Great bakery with friendly staff and a wonderful social mission.

Love the people here, love the mission, the food is always delicious and fresh tasting, the music is great to work to, and the art is always inspiring. This is really a community -oriented place, if you're in such a huge hurry to get your coffee that you can't take a few moments to chat with the guys behind the counter (who are all lovely), you might not be a fan, but your loss. Also, least pretentious, most eclectic, loyal clientele of any coffee-shop I know of in Boston. I just wished they were open later and on Sundays!

Love this place! Great mission, great food, great atmosphere. A wonderful place to do work, have a meeting, or just relax.

Great food at great prices. Definitely the best lunch option in Roxbury. Everything from the coffee and scones to the sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies are very good. The staff is always pleasant, and although the lunch rush at 12pm packs the place, they try their hardest to get your order out quickly. I specifically love the maple scones, the curry chicken sandwich, the mushroom soup, and both the oatmeal and choc chip cookies. But from what I hear from others, everything is good.

there really aren't any words for how much i love this place. they make delicious sweet potato mash, and delicious soups, and delicious brownies and cookies, and i don't eat sandwiches but they always look really good when other people get them. but that's not even my favorite part. my favorite part is that it just feels so comfortable. i'm anxious all the time, but i'll sit there and eat food in front of people and you can make jokes with everyone and there's no weird awkwardness that's an epidemic in Boston. it sounds crazy, no doubt, but there's no way you could disagree once you've gone. everyone is just, nice to each other. genuinely nice. i love this place. they also don't judge me for ordering a brownie and a glass of wine for lunch. together, we all came to the conclusion that that's basically the classiest thing anyone could order. so much good vibes.

Haley House has exceptionally friendly staff, delicious food, and is a great place to meet, work, etc, with free wifi and a nice outdoor area with picnic tables. I highly recommend their veggie burger and vegan muffins!

The space is very tight especially during the lunch rush. While they have free wifi they've recently changed their policy and turn it off at lunch. The food is good and a little under seasoned for my taste. Although the catered food is excellent! They have these chocolate chip cookies soft and chewy with crispy buttery edges.

I first went to the Haley House on a walk back from Mass Ave and tried the muffin and a soup. Both were very good. My next visit was with my gym buddies for a muffin and a tea, again, very good. I have since had breakfast and lunch. I recently took a friend who had never been for a lunch/meeting. We both had the soup of the day (wished I could take the whole pot home) and a salad. The atmosphere is welcoming and the staff are friendly. When combined with good food its a great place to go and I love that they give back to the community of Roxbury.

I think this might become my new spot. Not only is this place dope because of its artsy vibe it backs it up in all the right ways. The conversation at my table was fractured as we all stuffed our faces. Man the cole slaw was delicious. It was unlike any I've ever hard and had tons of red cabbage mixed in. I had the Jerk Chicken Grilled Cheese. The jerk seasoning was perfect, not to spicy not too weak. The chocolate chips in the cookie were delectable, and melted in my mouth. I even grabbed a pumpkin cupcake to go. I can't help it that I have a sweet tooth! Beyond the food, and the good energy, Haley House is changing the community. They train over six homeless individuals every year in the bakery department. They are an active part in the revitalization of the Dudley area.

There isn't an espresso bar at Haley's, they only have drip coffee, but its well made. We would definitely recommend their hot chocolate with their homemade freshly-made whip cream on top - SO GOOD! We've also tried their veggie burger and that was incredibly tasty. All of the food we've seen looks really delicious. The staff is super friendly and the general atmosphere at Haley House is so pleasant. Everyone genuinely looks happy to be there - staff and clientele. Also a really great space and cute outdoor seating options with plenty of parking.

Giant chewy chocolate chip cookies.... Believe me this is all you need to know. What's good for the community is good for my tummy.

Great mission, great food but the wi-fi spotty or did they do that on purpose to get you out of their cafe?? freezing cold in the winter. My food took incredibly long because they forgot my order... I do try to frequent the place but sometimes its hard when the service is bad...

Dining room is small and the place is full at lunch because the food is good and such a great mission! I had the chicken plate with macaroni and cheese and collard greens. The chicken was a prepackaged type but the delicious homemade gravy on top made that forgivable. The mac and cheese was wonderfully cheesy and tasty! So good. It had that amazing homemade quality to hit. The collard greens were unlike any I have ever had. They were vegan and seasoned with ginger. The ginger made them sweet and spicy at the same time. At first the sweetness threw me off but I liked it. I usually can't eat spicy foods but the ginger spice was a little different, and also those greens were too good not to keep eating them. The food was very good and all that for $8.20. Great price! The restaurant has pictures of the staff hanging up which were both great to see and very much in line with the mission of the Haley House and the people who's lives they are supporting. The staff was also super nice, making sure we got down the snowy steps okay! I look forward to returning.

This is the best cafe I've been to in Boston; it's like I've finally found what I've been looking for in these independently-owned places that have decent food but sort of lack character. The first thing that stands out is the quality of the atmosphere - SO friendly, everybody seems to know each other, lots of laughing, talking over tables and the counter. I got a roasted veggie grilled cheese and it was DELICIOUS; the ginger slaw is really good too and added nice flavor. I wish I could work from this place day in and day out. Love it!

EVERYTHING here was AMAZING!! The food, the staff, the atmosphere, and the food. (Yes, I listed the food twice, it was that good!) I highly suggest trying the Jamaican Jerk Grilled Cheese with some of their iced tea. Oh, and the coleslaw that came with sandwich was delicious, and I usually hate coleslaw. Everything was so good here that we came back another two or three times on our trip! Definitely try the hot chocolate!! Best I've ever had, I dream of it at night! If you happen to stop by for breakfast, you cannot go wrong with anything you order. If you miss breakfast, just order a pastry or some baked good while you're there, you will not regret it! I cannot wait to go back to Boston just so I can eat here again!!

Stumbled upon this place while serving jury duty down the street and was impressed. I wish I could have stayed for longer and definitely want to go back. The atmosphere was warm and community focused, the people friendly and diverse and there are so many extras that make this place very special (see other reviews for details). Check it out!

I was introduced to Haley House yesterday by a business associate and LOVED the food. The jerk chicken plate was so amazing, I came back today for the same thing! The soups are fantastic. The staff is so friendly. I can't say enough good things about this place. It's definitely on my favorite restaurants in the Boston area!

I love Haley's! I currently live in the South End, and Haley's has been a great place for me to get out of my house for a nice, cheap cup of coffee and delicious brunch food while I work on my job search. Their breakfast that has eggs, sausage, and grits is only $4.95, and a delicious coffee is just under $1.95. I also love that these are one of the few places in the northeast that sells cheesy grits! Their mac and cheese is super delicious, although it's been premade and heated up. I wish they'd just do a better job of heating it up in the microwave so that there are less cold spots. Service can be somewhat spotty at times, but these are people who are undergoing job training at a nonprofit with a very noble cause, I don't mind too much. The wireless can be extremely spotty at times. However, you can temporarily "borrow" from the neighbours' wireless connections while you wait for the bakery's signals to reemerge. Plus, this is one of the few places near the South End that has free wireless AND accessible outlets.

What an amazing, amazing part of our community. I've both volunteered and had a chance to enjoy this lovely cafe and I just adore what they do. As a volunteer, I've done helped make cookies, decorated them, cleaned out the kitchen, and done dishes. We even prepped the cafe for a wedding/reception last summer! Because they run on a pretty meager budget (and strive to keep the prices affordable for the area), they have volunteers help on days when they don't have enough staff. They also provide job training to those folks who are having difficulty finding jobs due to obstacles from their past. The food is affordable and they have delicious sandwiches, salads, soups, and specials. The meal portions are large and most everything is made from scratch. You can definitely taste the love. I could probably eat about 20 of their ginormous gooey chocolate chip cookies in one sitting. During the year (especially the summer), they have different food events, soup-offs... dinner and a movie... etc. They always have amazing local art on the walls. And to top it off, they go for the green by using biodegradable wares, recycling, and buying local ingredients when they can. The cafe is a short walk from Dudley Station and there are also a few buses and the silver line that go past. They've also got lotsa parking. Go, go, go!

The chocolate cream cheese cupcake was superb. The wrap was pretty good it had chicken and curry in it but tasted a tad sweet for a sandwich. My girlfriend loved the jerk chicken. The place gets rather busy around lunch time so I would suggest going a little earlier or after to beat/miss the crowd!

Why is there not a line out the door like the one at Flour? I guess I shouldn't ask, because it's why I'm able to go so often and hang out for a while with delicious food and fair trade coffee. They care about the community, about the environment, about delicious local food. This is where I bring out-of-town guests, and they are always impressed. So much better than clam chowder in a bread bowl at Faneuil Hall. We had our Valentine's brunch here. It was not crowded, reasonably priced, and delicious. We had delicious food and great dessert (coconut passion fruit cupcakes and a panna cotta parfait with hazelnut, espresso, and vanilla). Desserts were just $2.50! How can you beat that? YOU CAN'T. Man, I love this place.

Having heard about the cafe from a friend who works there, I decided to meet with a coworker at Haley House to have productive mid-morning caffeinated collaboration. It was a most excellent choice! There were clearly others having working lunches and the like, especially those, it seemed, who work in nonprofit/social work sectors. Best of all, the locals seem to dig it, too. The crowd (and I do mean crowd, by lunch time, but the space managed to welcome everyone) was a mix of Haley House-ers, their friends, Roxbury neighbors, and people escaping their offices in Back Bay, with a healthy overlap. The atmosphere was convivial and very positive, and I found that when on my own I was able to get much more work done than I am in some other coffee shop/bakeries. Best of all, though, were the food and drink. I had the vegan split pea soup, a coffee, and later a chocolate-cream cheese cupcake. So, so good all around! I always appreciate when shops serve fair trade as THE coffee available, not just one of many options as if paying growers reasonable wages for their beans is just a trendy new flavor. The pea soup was delicious, and I never would have known it was vegan if... I hadn't known it was vegan. Just as good as Veggie Planet, and with an ambiance all its own.

Addendum to previous review: Oh.my .god. HUGE chicken caeser wrap with a side of slaw that is the size of your humongous, delicious wrap: $5.75. Served quickly, but not quickly, and pleasantly. While waiting, read about the mission on the walls. Inspiring. Absolutely worth the trip to Dudley Square and every penny spent.

Amazing food, vegan and vegetarian options, wi-fi, great portions, organic and local fare, and karma to boot. For me it is everything I want in a business and place to eat. Staff is incredibly friendly and fun. They support local artists and local happenings. This local business helps people re-enter the workforce. You're money here stimulates the economy in more ways than one.

Haley House catered the Bayard Rustin Breakfast this past weekend and were professional, friendly, patient and served up some amazing food. While I've always been a fan, what I didn't know is that in their training program, they don't do Cori checks, they take people who might have been former substance abusers, etc.; long story short: they actually know that not everyone's perfect, that some folks need a chance, and they're open to providing that chance. After I took some time to learn more about the work they do, I'm even more impressed with them, and I'll go out of my way (which you know I don't really do) to go down Dudley to put my money behind an organization that invests in the community. AND I heard the cupcakes are fantastic, so I want to try those out, too. Keep up the good work, Haley House!

I brought my parents here to try the food and they were very apparently confused. In my dads words, "I thought we were supporting a good cause. I didn't think the food would be so delicious." The Jamaican Jerk Chicken grilled cheese is my favorite entree, but I'll give most of the specials a shot as well. I have yet to have a bad baked good, but the chocolate pound cake cupcake, the chocolate chip cookies and the raspberry crumble bar are among my favorites. Can't beat the overall vibe. It feels like a community and is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal (all the while knowing that you are supporting a good cause). Phenomenal place. Go for the good food and the good cause, stay because of the excellent atmosphere.

The food is gross, but the spot is neat and it has free WIFI and a parking lot and a friendly staff. The internet connection wasn't weak like other free connections. I was able to connect to a work VPN.

Do good, eat good. Great food all around - by far my favorite muffin of all time is the banana one with cardamom (yum!) Love the quesadillas and the sweet potato wrap is delicious! Black Cherry soda is the prefect compliment either of these dishes.

I first experienced a Haley House lunch during a training taking place in Boston. There was a spread of wraps, salads, baked goods etc, I chose the Wicked good curry chicken wrap. Every bite was better than the one before, the ingredients were so fresh...I knew I had to find this place. I took my husband to the actual cafe several weeks later and we both LOVED our choices. He had the jerk chicken plate while I opted for the roasted turkey plate. It was unbelievably delicious. The staff was great, the location is convenient and the atmosphere is very upbeat. Prices are very reasonable.

I love grabbing a bowl of tomato soup and a cup of tea at Haley House Cafe. The fact that Haley House does such important work in Boston keeps me coming back for their down home comfort food. The revolving artwork will keep you engaged while you wait; I always learn something from the quotes, poems and statistics posted on the chalk wall. I find it to be the perfect place to meet colleagues for an early or late working lunch. I've been to a number of work functions that have been catered by HHBC: definitely worth checking out if you're looking for an alternative to the usual corporate caterers.

I travel a lot for work and I was so lucky to come across this cafe. This is one of the coolest places I've visited in a long time. The food was awesome, lots of thought provoking artwork on the walls and Haley House was clearly a community gathering spot. The people that worked there were all super-friendly and it seemed like there may have been some life-skills training going on in the background. Awesome vibe. If you are in this part of Boston, don't miss this place. Heck, if you are anywhere in Boston go find this place!

I haven't been here in a long while, but let me see what I can remember. Everything I remember is good! Love the mission of this place. They have a great bakery training program and works towards the greater good of people. The food is delicious. The baked goods are light and fluffy. The soups are just right in flavor. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The decor inside is inspiring. Totally off the beaten path, but if you ever find yourself in the area, make sure to stop in for a coffee or muffin.

This place is THE BEST! The food is amazing and good for you and the staff is exceptional. The whole atmosphere is very welcoming and it attracts a diverse clientele, which I love. They are very community oriented and have great programs for Boston youth and adults. Great people, Great food, and Great local artwork. I highly recommend it!!

I want to use words like 'rhapsodize' and 'judiciously appointed' when talking about sugar crystals on top of the toasted banana slices on my muffin... I think I actually just sighed when I was revisiting the moist-ness of the corn muffin moistmoistmoist that came with my soup. And the soup, this thai coconut milk tomato broth... the salad with its gingery dressing. I feel like doing a Homer Simpson 'uuuuuhhhh' and letting my tongue hang down my face. The sh*t here is GOOD! And all of that orgasmatronic good stuff for $6.00! This place is pretty amazing, trying to do anti-gang work with bread and providing jobs to folks who might not otherwise be able to get them- homeless, folks screwed over by the CORI system. Well worth supporting some good healthy food in Dudley Sq.

  • Erika S.

The food here is amazing and made with local ingredients when possible. Loads of vegetarian and/or vegan options that are flavorful and not at all cardboardy or twiggy. The staff are friendly and skilled. My favorite thing about supporting Haley House is that they run this great program where they train people to work as bakers. They specifically target people who might be formerly homeless, living in recovery from mental illness, living with other disabilities, and so forth. I've told many people about the program (both in my personal and professional life), and what I particularly love is that they don't have strict parameters like most job-training programs; they don't really care what type of benefits you receive or whether you fit strictly into any particular category. Oh, also check out their website for information on the bakery program or on the restaurant. It's updated regularly and has tons of information, including menus, hours, their mission, etc. They also do catering; we used them for a work function and were very very pleased.

Three stars for the food - pretty decent, local food and fairly imaginative menu. But I gave it one star for service, because aside from one of the guys behind the line who is friendly, engaging and attentive, the service is awful. The cashier, just to site one example, took his time on a personal phone call with four people waiting in line for a solid seven minutes. The manager also is pretty snotty. So even though it's one of the better options for food around here, I'd rather risk the microbes and/or getting stabbed at the chinese food joint near Dudley station than be treated like crap while forking over my hard earned money at Haley House for a sandwich.

Into good food? Have a guilty conscience about fair trade shade grown coffee? Excited by the prospect of making economic change through teaching viable skills? Thursday nights with Nina is wonderful. Open mic, jerk chicken, and now a selection of organic beer and wine for those who imbibe. Ask me about the time my mom didn't get her waffles because the parole offers paid a visit to the kitchen staff...

Their lunch is quick and great. They have a nice variety of sandwiches and some comfort food items, like mac and cheese. Their homemade pastry is awesome! All of this, plus the good feeling of sponsoring a socially responsible business and nonprofit (they are also a job training program). They do catering also. We use them for work activities and have never been disappointed.

I wish this place was spread out around Boston. Pros: Their coffee is amazing and free trade, probably the closest thing to NYC-like coffee I can find here. Great ideas for training people and being socially responsible Delicious menu options, and are mostly executed pretty well. Pretty affordable. Cons: Their system sucks. By "system" I don't mean their mission statement or anything, but more like just how their actual operations work. Everytime I've been there (4 times, all weekends), service can crawl to a halt if there's more than a couple people around. Plus they've occasionally run out of things such as brioche for french toast, coffee cups, home fries, etc. To their credit they are a small time place and I can't hold them to the standards of a place like Zaftigs, but they do bog down and mess some things up. My guess is their weekend business is too inconsistent enough to justify having more than 4 people working. However, I do really enjoy coming to this place when I'm around Dudley Square.

  • Andrew W.

This place is AMAZING. Their baked goods are delicious, and all their food I could eat for days. All of their food is healthy, mostly organic and above all has a propose, oh, and did I mention that it's cheap? For 6.75 you can get a meal with 2 sides and cornbread. The cornbread is worth the 6.75 alone, its got a bit of zest to it, YUM! The coffee is great the people are great, and it's a positive force in the area. Go here because its awesome!

I love the feel good spirit when I walk through these doors. There mission is admirable stuff. Also, having healthy food options in the hood is a must. Although I am not a vegan, I do enjoy some of the vegan options. I recently added them on my Facebook and now get some great daily menu updates. The turkey meatball sub on wheat was scrumptious. They also have just great comfort food and tasty soups. Did I mention that they serve cheesy grits - yummy.

    I. Love. Their. Muffins. I urge all Dorchester residents to wend their way over to Dudley to try it out, then stampede back up to the counter to request that they open a Haley House sequel in Peabody Square. please!

A friend of mine raved about this place, so I knew I had to try it out. The concept and story behind the business is a truly remarkable one, and right up my alley of interests. That being said, she dragged me down Melnea Cass Blvd., an area I don't frequently traverse, on a Sunday morning. Much to our surprise, Hayley House isn't open on Sundays... shame on me for not looking up the hours on my smart-phone while en-route, no one to blame but myself. Another trip yielded better results, I went with a few friends for breakfast and the food was amazing. I was especially impressed with the all of the organic and free trade offerings at such a low price. This place truly is a hidden gem. I would definitely recommend adding it to your list of regular spots to grab a lazy Saturday morning. Another plus = tons of parking.

Writing this review makes me miss Boston. I was there working for awhile and when I found Haley House I was super excited. Due to the fact that I was in Boston to organize low-income workers, finding a socially responsible place to go for lunch made life even better. I loved! the muffins. The Rwandan coffee was good. I had the curry chicken wrap a couple of times, pretty excellent (although could use a little more moisture to it...add some veggies maybe?). My friend was down with the Jerk Chicken and the soul food sides. The ambience is good. The staff is what make the place. Genuine to the neighborhood and working for a cause. Doesn't get a whole lot better. Whenever I go back to Boston I would make this a regular haunt for sure!

Ayup, I'm pretty much just gonna call the Haley House my new weekend breakfast spot for the rest of my time on earth in Roxbury. There is nothing earth shatteringly good about Haley but it is a combination of things that make it work out very well for me. For starters: a. really good fair trade coffee b. home made everything c. a business that gives a crap about the community d. wi-fi e. decent collection of books for your browsing pleasure f. very clean bathrooms g. quick service h. eco friendly i....the most important part CHEAP!!! j. creative menu (goat cheese and herb omelet, etc.) It really doesn't hurt that I live a 3 minute walk away either!

  • Haley W.

If you're looking to support a local cafe with high quality items for an affordable price, I can't think of a better place. All beverages are fair trade, food is homemade, and Haley House Bakery Cafe is a great venue for community events, historical lectures, and a showcase for local artists. Plus the banana muffins have dried banana chips layerd on the top...YUuuUm. Great vibe.

This is easily my favorite restaurant in the Boston area. Not only is the food amazing, but it does well for the conscience as well. I've never had anything that's disappointing and that's saying a lot, having been there for probably around 100 meals at this point. I used to work in the next building over and I miss the simplicity of grabbing a cup of tea (great loose tea selection) and a muffin or scone for breakfast (I'd recommend a flavor but they're all good). If I was feeling particularly hungry, I'd splurge on a breakfast sandwich/wrap that would usually put me in a good place until early afternoon. Putting homefries in the sandwich is a stroke of genius. Once lunch rolled around, it was back to Haley House. Their mac n cheese is the best I've ever had, but that can be said for most things on the menu. The staff is fun and friendly, and if you show up often enough they're guaranteed to remember your name and spark up a conversation. Everyone that I've taken here (and there have been a lot of them) has been completely blown away by how good the food is. I've converted a handful of co-workers at my current job to regulars over the past few months. All of this would shape up to make an excellent restaurant, but the fact that they're so involved in supporting the community and do a great job at it, really puts this place over the top. I can't possibly recommend them more highly.

Always great food and a friendly, artsy atmosphere. The business is run with high moral and eco-consciousness, having Fair Trade products, fresh local produce and running great community programs. The prices are fair and you're really getting your money's worth. They have a lot of creative and delicious spins on old favorites! Easy to get to (#1 bus and a short walk from Dudley Station). The only downsides are the limited hours (7-4 most days), some foods selling out too quickly (delicious, high demand+ fresh ingredients= shortages) and it being closed on Sundays. All of that is easy to get over because of the friendly staff, the awesome atmosphere and the great food.

  • Jazzie F.

You know that place, where they have great food and you can call it your second home and everybody knows your name...? That's the Haley House for me. I always claim that part of the reason I still work where I work is because I can go here for lunch. This place is my sanctuary. It's my escape from the harsh world and a place where they have great vegan-friendly options and just by far the best coffee I have had in all of Boston. It maybe just a bit out of the way for some people and yes they sometimes take a long time to cook your food. But, its worth it. Their mission is great, food is good, did I mention the coffee is kinda kick ass? Go here. You'll be happy you did.

The worst part about this place is when it's closed. I don't believe it's open on Sundays. The day I made that discovery, I ended up driving to Flour in the S. End. Talk about a change in atmosphere. If there ever were a Flour-Haley throwdown, my money is on Haley. It is the right place, in the right location. Excellent music. The food is fresh and interesting and it has something for everyone. There is definitely more of a co-op feel to the place, but Haley House won't let you down.

Wow. Jesse and I walked in here today because I needed an iced coffee bad, and we felt like we were walking into an entirely different neighborhood. It is an adorable little cafe, and the food looked great. I stuck to my coffee, and we caught the bus right after, but I will definitely be back to have some lunch here sometime. It's great to see a positive business in the heart of Dudley Square, because there's not a lot......there's Darkwave, a few decent restaurants, and Haley House. I am glad to see it, and hurray for something other than fried food in Dudley! For anyone wanting to venture here, there's a huge private parking lot, and the prices as great. Please support the positive businesses of Dudley, otherwise they won't survive and there won't be positive change in the neighborhood!

Spankin fresh organic soul food with a cause in the hood. Reeeaaal fooood. Not just home-made- -but also Locally grown!!!!!!!!!Organic before "Organic" was born...... Now that's old school! And Haley baked goods are available across the city, for example, at City Feed and Supply in Jamaica Plain- :) (correction 6/08 haley goods are no longer at C.F.) Soooo, when I was a teacher in Roxbury it was nice to know there was a delicious healthy oasis around the corner. This is where I fed my kids(shedding a salty liberal underpaid tear). I was already familiar with Southern Rod's cooking, from What's Up Magazine functions, and was sooo excited when he helped found this place in 2005. Jerk rubbed chicken grilled cheese. Maple walnut scones. Rotating vegetable burger. Chutney. Homemade gravy and turkey, home made breads, grits, collared greens, fresh OJ, (it's really hard to find fresh OJ)quality Equal Exchange fair trade coffee, real whip, one of the best chocolate chip cookies in Boston (I don't exaggerate about stuff like that.) And they have vegan stuff for all you vegan homies. This place has fairly priced seasonally rotated menus, and gets produce from local farms like the Food Project in Roxbury and Dorchester!!! "This Haley House employs low income and homeless people. Haley House has a policy where employees rotate and perform all the tasks of the non-profit, helping workers gain marketable skills through a job assistance program" In addition to being something of a progressive work environment, it's nice inside; lots of plants, free wi-fi, beats. There are also community meetings here; AA meetings, performances. The food is hearty and reflects the tastes and needs of the area; its just so beautiful (shedding a bleeding heart salty nutrient filled tear) Yea, i think Haley House Bakery Cafe is bringing and receiving the love from Dudley Square, Boston. In this segregated town it's refreshing to see such a diverse, comfy food place.

Unfortunately this place has gone down hill in recent months. The prices have gone up, but the quality of the food has gone down. I do not mind paying $9.25 for a sandwich and an ice tea, if it's good. Last time I went in there I ordered a veggie burger, but what I got was a tasteless veggie mush between two slices of bread. That was like the third time I got a meal from there that was served cold/lukewarm (soup is suppose to be hot right?) or just plain inedible. Mind you I had been going to Haley House since last summer and everything was great until about 2 months ago. Anyway, I just can't force myself to go there anymore even it is for a good cause.

Quiet as it is kept, Thursday nights are a rare find in Roxbury at the Haley House Bakery Café! Art Is Life Itself! is a weekly performance series that embraces Art, Culture & Spirituality. Founded & Hosted by Nina LaNegra, Artist, Professor & longtime talk show host, AiLi as it is affectionately called has been going strong for over two years. Co-Hosted by Fulani Haynes, Vocalist, Actress & Storyteller she performs monthly with her band The Jazz Collaborative. The bad news, you only have one more chance in 2010 to catch an amazing opportunity to see live music, poetry & expression by professionals and first-timers on Thursday December 16, starting at 7pm-10pm. The good news is that Nina and Fulani start up again after a short break on Thursday January 20th, 2011. Never a cover, although donations are welcome, no one ever turned away for a lack of funds. The kitchen is open from 5pm-8:30pm and beer & wine are served with proper id. There is always a Featured Artist(s), Idea or Theme; Dialog and Open Mic, First Come, First Serve. Office Yoga, Def Poetry JAM poets, Opera Singers and 7 year old stand up comedians are just some of the contributors to AiLi. All ages, cultures and beliefs mixed with all levels of abilities and interest in a warm, welcoming, art-filled environment create a unique gem, worthy of bracing cold or inclement weather to experience. Did I mention free parking and T accessible?

As others have mentioned, Haley House is run by a fantastic bunch of people, who allow individuals who were formerly incarcerated to work for them. Such an awesome concept, and such an awesome place. The decor is cozy - think coffee shop homey-ness. The food is rockin' too - I usually get the grilled cheese, but I'm excited to branch out in the coming weeks. Also, I can never EVER walk by the giant cookies without getting one. So delicious.

This place is an island of calm coffee-house-like atmosphere to which I retreat whenever work gets too hectic. The food is delicious and way healthier than the norm, they have a great selection of organic juices and sodas, their coffee is excellent, and their baked goods are really really good. The tables are a little close together but the places along the wall are perfectly spaced and spacious. I have already mentioned the food. However, what prompted this review was the blueberry tart I had today. It was HUGE, about 7" wide and maybe 2" deep, like a small pie. I was not at all hungry after my quesadilla, but after one bite of this tart, my desire was too strong to resist. Perfectly sweet and flaky on the outside, sweet and gooey on the inside. There is available wireless and outlets for laptop people, the organization's mission is one you can get behind, and the food/beverages/baked goods are great. The only thing I have to knock a star off for is the service; it generally takes ten to fifteen minutes to get your food and occasionally something is missing or wrong (though they always fix it ASAP). But seriously, this place is worth a look if you're around here.

Good food & good karma! The Haley House Bakery Cafe in Dudley Square is part of a larger non-profit, Haley House, and is part of a job training program. The food here is incredible. I'm hooked on the Dade Street Grilled Cheese, which is tomato, mozzarella, & pesto. It comes with a generous garden salad, and is always satisfying. They have a great selection of sandwiches, hamburgers, and I think they also always have soup & pizza, as well. On top of the great lunches, they also have delicious baked goods. I've picked up cake, muffins, and other various goodies there, and again am always happy. It's a little pricey compared to other places in the area, and definitely not great for those on a diet, but the good karma of helping out a local non-profit and helping others build job skills cancels out these considerations in my mind.

I really love this place. First off, the food is great - love the freakin' meatloaf sandwich. Great coffee and desserts. Friendly staff (though quirky). Free WiFi, free parking, great atmosphere and the feeling you're supporting a good cause. Because you are.

    (5)
  • Joe S.

Ditto on the Dade Street sandwich - very tasty, as was the cornbread and soup of the day (Irish potato). Under $6 for the soup and half sandwich seems very reasonable to me. It's also a nice place to hang around and work / read / etc. My only caution would be with the coffee later in the day; my cup tasted like it had been sitting in the airpot for hours.

Excellent muffins that don't feel loaded with sugar. I was told that the coffee is good too. I really admire their mission, and I can't wait to try the other foods they offer. The place is both quaint-feeling and inspiring, and the fact that they have free WiFi is awesome! I will definitely study here soon.

A bit of a trek for me (from Brighton), but 100% worth it. GREAT space, vibrant art, healthy food, socially responsible business. The workers are terrific and friendly...you can read about the programs/training they offer their workers on their website. They have yummy vegan baked goods, just ask them to point out which ones are vegan as they aren't marked. I can't say enough good things about this place, I only wish it was easier for me to get to!

Amazing. The food is good (I had the steak wrap). The coffee had good flavor. The staff was nice and attentive. The must was a bit too loud but so it goes.

this is one of my favorite places EVER. I have only been a couple of times because it is kind of tough to get there with out a car from where I live, but I would go more if I were closer. I love it. If I had lots of money I would give it to them.

Great coffee, friendly people, and a cool interior. Maybe the coolest thing about the place--and what sets it apart from most cafes--is the bakery training program. Keep up the good work!

You may not get a chance to visit this place due to their hours of operation, and this place may not have the most gourmet food but they sure do try. Due to it being a non profit organization that helps train individuals passionate about cooking, serving and representing the community, and using organic food whenever possible, I fully support them and their mission. The welcoming vibe of the cafe and the display of local artists creations makes it such a well rounded place. Their daily specials are great when you are feeling up for something different from their regular menu, but I live for their jerk chicken grilled cheese.....and a cookie or dessert for a $1 more?!? Hope that you get the chance to experience the Haley House sometime and support their program! I give it 5 stars because of what they represent.....the food is just a bonus....

Best coffee shop I've found in Boston. I live in Roxbury and there arn't a lot of coffee shops around so when someone tipped me off about this I was thrilled. The place is small and cozy and the staff is beyond friendly. I'm in there all the time and even brought my huge family for breakfast, they even gave us free fruit plates! The food is amazing, hands down best grilled cheese ever, and the prices are fantastic as well. There's plenty of reading and best of all they support local farmers and charities and their food is organic! I'm actually off to get an organic love buzz coffee with a pinch of cinnamon right now.

  • David W.

I'm not generally the kind of person that necessarily buys products from a local vendor just on the basis of the fact that they're local. Luckily, with Haley House I feel as though I can both support a local non-profit, as well as get a great meal. Haley House provides career training to underemployed individuals, runs a soup kitchen, and maintain an organic farm to provide people with organic food who wouldn't normally have access to it. First off, the prices here are great. I guess because they're a non-profit they can keep their prices down. And the food is creative and wonderful. I've only been here a couple of times, but I've had their blueberry pancakes and their jerk chicken grilled cheese sandwich. Both were really delicious. The ambience here is very relaxed and very cool. Definitely a great, quiet place to relax over brunch with a friend. So go when you're not in a rush - no one's trying to turn a table here, so there's no hurry! They do take credit cards here, but only if your purchase is over $10, and that's actually quite challenging to do here, so come prepared with cash. This is definitely the tastiest and most inexpensive good deed you're likely to do any time in the near future.

Enormously impressive! The place is friendly and not too crowded, the staff was sweet and obviously love their jobs, and the food was amazing! I could have sat and drank glass after glass of their Thai Ice Tea all day. I can't wait to go back here.

  • Elana S.

Haley House is an incredible place. Here, underemployed folks participate in a 6-month training program, preparing food and running a great cafe, in order to advance in the workforce and try to bust open this crazy economy. Staff are kind and funny, the atmosphere is cozy and creative, and the food is exactly what you're looking for. I've had the coffee (Love Buzz or something like that! As wonderful as it sounds) as well as muffins, and a super sandwich involving grilled swiss cheese with roasted red peppers and caramelized onions on delicious whole wheat bread. The slaw is the best, best, best and I dream of it.

best muffin I have had in boston -- worth traveling for. great atmosphere: cozy space, colorful, comfortable. attentive and friendly staff. easy self-serve coffee with a couple options. a little oasis in Dudley. haven't had brunch but assume it's also delicious...

  • Kristina F.

How do you begin. First of all, read everyone else's comments about how conceptually perfect this place is. Then, take your skepticism (if any) down to Washington Street near Dudley and eat yourself some fine grub. I love this place so.... wish the idea of such a place was less an anomaly and more the standard in coffee houses and food establishments entirely. I'm lucky to have a friend that lives in the building next door, so whenever I'm over, I'm out to Haley to pick up a cheesy egg breakfast burrito, or a pumpkin muffin and a great cup of coffee. Haven't done Jazz brunch, but am eager too. I've walked in on a Jazz brunch and the piles of organic hash browns and baked goods seemed heavenly. I hear it has some serious mac 'n' cheese and collard greens, and it's all reasonably priced.... and really, where else can you get African peanut soup....

    (5)
  • K T.

Really, really great. Good food, big portions, free internet, awesome atmosphere, and the place does a lot of good things. And they let me use their phone when I lost my cell phone, which is always a good thing. My only complaints are that I wish they had more vegan stuff and that they're too far away from my apartment.

The pizza at Haley House is amazing. Difinitely not the usual fare for the neighborhood, as for the Karma, makes me feel like I'm in Cambridge.

  • Jessie H.

Awesome - find this place and go there. Outstanding soup and sandwich/bakery joint. I love it! Delicious soups and veggie burger of the day. yummmmmm. Incredible business model. You want to spend money here to support the work they are doing - community involvement, fresh/healthy food, local agriculture, social mission to provide employment to the underemployed. I hope they could open another location in Somerville or Cambridge.

  • E L.

THIS (NON-PROFIT) PLACE IS AMAZING. Not only do they serve organic and fair trade, but all the workers are underemployed men and women engaged in a 6 month training program that helps get them jobs at the end of their training. The food is really delicious. I like to go for a big breakfast on Saturday morning. The highlight of which is the cheese grits!

Biases aside (I worked on the team behind the new Haley House Bakery Cafe in Dudley Sq.) - this is truly a beautiful place worth visiting for breakfast, lunch, or coffee. The space is funky, earthy, and unique. The staff-people are lovely. Didi is an inspired chef with a passion for unique foods - whoever heard of seasonally rotating menu items at a cafe in the inner city? Or pizza toppings changing with the day's freshest produce from local farms? This is a rare find in Boston...take advantage of the fair tade coffee, vegan muffins and free wi-fi.

Wow. This place is so right on, on all levels. I found Haley House by Google searching for vegan food in Roxbury and I've been a fan ever since. Friendly, helpful staff, cozy surroundings, amazing food! Yep. I'm a fan. I love Haley House!!

4 Stars only because I LOVE their purpose. I just discovered them recently. I've been for brunch once which was decent. I've been for lunch and I've been for the Community Service Donation dinner. When I went for lunch the food preparer, rather than informing me that they didn't have what I wanted just threw something on my plate. Didn't have brown rice so I guess they gave me white instead...only I hate white rice and would have rather had something else altogether. If the theme is not having any say over what I'm eating I'd have to say that I prefer the com service donation dinner. I will likely end up spending more but I know better than to get my hopes up expecting to get something I won't actually be getting. lol I recommend everyone attend the Saturday evening (5pm) dinner. I think it's prepared by cook mentors who've completed the program along with the help of kids from the neighborhood.

Haley House gets a five star review because not only are they committed to local food, this place truly has a heart for the community. I wish more business's would follow their model. If you're over by Dudley Station you would honestly do the city a disservice by purchasing your morning joe anywhere else. I came in with my sister on an early morning and wasn't hungry but she insisted so I got some tea and a blueberry muffin. My sister ordered coffee and a scone. My muffin was moist, fresh and delicious. My tea was hot and I appreciate that they have all the extras for you to add on your own... Sugar, honey, etc. My sister wasn't happy with her scone but I assume the problem is just scones themselves... Yuck I hate them lol no fault of the Haley House though... I definitely have to come back and support the Haley House and try some more of the food they have to offer!

Good food and even better cause. You can eat out and spend your money on something that gives back to the community. Came for lunch/brunch and was very pleased. Food made with fresh ingredients, made from scratch. Shared some jerk chicken that came with a side salad, poutine with eggs, and a cookie. Definitely try their baked goods. Their big cookies are awesome...crispy crunchy yet moist and gooey at the same time! They have local art on the walls, many community events, and live music too. Support Haley house!

I regret not trying this place sooner! Tucked away behind some buildings, one would easily miss this place. There is a huge private lot with free parking! Bonus star given we're in Boston. As soon as I got out of my car I knew I was in for a treat. Whatever they were brewing in that magical place you could smell it immediately. I got the jerk chicken grilled cheese with cheddar, tomato, and caramelized onions, $6.95. Holy smokes. Talk about succulent chunks of chicken bursting with flavor. I can't wait to go back to try everything else on the menu.

I came here for lunch with a friend. Cute place very homey. I love how they Care about the community. We had the jerk chicken with mac and cheese and collard greens. Everything was delicious. Collard greens were amazing! Would love to go back on Poetry night. Parking was good too.

I want to eat here every day for the rest of my life. The cheese grits were better than even my family makes (shh, don't tell). I also had jerk chicken and eggs and it was one of the most satisfying meals ever with just enough of everything, and prices are a steal. The ambiance is homey and the coffee is amazing. Staff were swell. This place is a treasure.

Try their jerk chicken wrap and chocolate chip cookie! Their staff is friendly and helpful. They have free wifi! It is a perfect place to bring a friend or have an informal business meeting. The atmosphere is inviting and light. They always have great music playing in the background. Every so often, they display art from artists or organizations they support because of their involvement in building up the community. I have been here on many occasions and I have never had a bad experience. The quality of food is wonderfully consistent and locally fresh. If you have not been here, try it and bring a friend or a laptop. You will love it!

Haley House is one of my FAVORITE places in Boston. The food and service at HH are awesome and I love how they hire folks who would otherwise have a difficult time finding a job. All their food is made to order and made with fresh ingredients. My favorite breakfast item is the "firecracker". It's a pressed breakfast wrap with turkey bacon, egg, cheese and spicy collard greens. Just get it... it is that good! For lunch, I recommend get the chicken club sandwich. I was told that they bake their own bread and hope that it's still the case because the crust is perfectly crisp and inside is so fluffy and soft. If you've never been to HH, you must must must get their famous giant chocolate chip cookie. You will not regret it! Also, if you tell them it's your first time there, they might give you a cookie for free :) If you're looking for a quiet place to do work, you may want to look elsewhere, as it gets pretty busy on the weekdays and their music is usually loud. But if you don't mind, I see people camping out and doing work here all the time. The best part about HH is their large FREE parking lot... which is very rare in Boston.

Amazing place!!! I had the spinach and chicken soup- phenomenal. The jerk chicken grilled cheese was wonderfully made and so yummy. It had a great atmosphere where you could sit and have coffee. Definitely a place I would go back to if I lived in Boston. I love the idea behind the house: A model of social enterprise, Haley House Bakery Café promotes the physical, economic and social well-being of the community. Our programs provide on-the-job training for those seeking to become financially independent and introduce young people to the power of cooking from scratch and making other healthy life-style decisions. Please go if you are in Boston!

There's no need for me to add my two cents as most of these reviews already attest to what I am about to say. As Barney Stinson would say, Haley House Bakery Cafe is "LEGEN-WAIT FOR IT BECAUSE I AM ABOUT TO MILK A COW AND GET ALL OF ITS-DARY!" Service: A+ Service is always A+ and the staff are always incredibly friendly and kind. They are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Wait Time: A+ You will wait for the food for a while, particularly if you go in during a busy hour. But that's because they make EVERYTHING from scratch using fresh local ingredients. So slow the heck down, grab some coffee, tea or free water, sit down and just chill. You can wait, can't you?! Food (Non-Baked Goods): A+ I have gotten many things at Haley House but here is what I recommend. For breakfast, make sure you get "THE FIRECRACKER". OH MY GOSH. I HATE TURKEY BACON BUT THEY MADE IT AMAZING TO CONSUME HERE. GET THE FIRECRACKER. For lunch get the "CHICKEN CLUB". I HATE GINGER BUT THE GINGER SLAW IS DELICIOUS. GET IT. Baked Goods: A+ I first experienced Haley House Bakery Cafe cookies as a student at Boston College. Believe the hype, the cookies are even more LEGEN-DARY when you get them straight from Haley House. Plus, if you mention that it's your first time they will give you a free cookie! But, if you've been there before don't lie. God's watching. Overall: A+ Look at my reviews. I am admittedly a cynic and a pessimist by nature and I don't just hand out 5 star reviews but this place is more than worthy based on its merits as a bakery and cafe alone. But if you also take into consideration the fact that Haley House is a champion of the Roxbury community and a real blessing to everyone in the neighborhood, it makes you feel even better about eating here. I'd like to give a huge shoutout to every single politician that ever ran for office in Boston because they PRACTICALLY LIVE HERE DURING ELECTION SEASON. PEACE!

We started going here because of Haley House's involvement and projects in the community - they do great work! But we keep going for the yummy "face-sized cookies" and REALLY good coffee. Fun atmosphere, cool events including a poetry slam. Wifi, parking. Check it out!

It's absolutely essential to realize that Haley House Bakery Cafe is not just a restaurant. It's part of a larger non-profit organization dedicated to helping underprivileged populations all throughout Boston, through soup kitchens, affordable housing, and its transitional employment program. Every dollar you spend here goes towards something good - and that's the most important part here. This cafe is absolutely delicious - try the barbeque chicken quesadilla or the famous jerk chicken - but this is just a bonus. Even if the food was absolutely terrible, this place would still deserve five stars.

I learnt of this place through my job as they get catering from here sometimes. The sandwich that made me curious about this place was the curry chicken salad sandwich. A friend/coworker of mine also wanted to try this place out and she did. She brought to work one day for lunch a jerk chicken salad. She made me taste the jerk chicken and I must say it was pretty good. I'm Jamaican and I tend to judge places that have a jerk anything on their menu very harshly. The jerk chicken from this place was delicious. After trying a piece of her chicken I knew I had to go check this place out. I told my boyfriend about it as he also loves jerk chicken. I must say the uniqueness of the building and how vibrant it looks on the outside is a breath of fresh air in the middle of Dudley. We walked into the restaurant and was instantly greeted by the man behind the counter. As soon as I looked at the menu I knew exactly what I wanted - the jerk chicken grilled cheese sandwich- well isn't this a unique spin on grilled cheese and the star of the sandwich Jerk chicken. My boyfriend ordered the jerk chicken plate with Mac and cheese and brown rice. As he said his order I also decided to order a jerk chicken plate in addition to my sandwich. My plate had brown rice and collard greens. As we waited for our order we sat and listened to the live jazz music and to Jeremy the cafe manager talk about the mission of the Haley House and what they are all about. I just continued to fall in love with this place more and more. We got our food and headed back to the car. My boyfriend asked for a bite of my sandwich. As he took the bite and chewed a few times the expression on his face said it all- I was in for a TREAT. I took a bite next and was in love. The sandwich was perfect in every way. Warm, crispy, the right amount of spice and a little sweet. We devoured the sandwich and the delicious cabbage slaw that came on the side. We finished the other dishes at home and it was all great but the star for me was the Sandwich. I look forward to my next tantalizing bite into my now new favorite sandwich. Haley House you have a new fan!!!! :)

I found out about this place through my job, they will typically use this place for catering. Once I tried their version of jerk chicken, I was pleasantly suprised because I initially thought it would taste like traditional Jamaican jerk chicken, but its is completly different....but in a good way. I then took it upon myself to try them for lunch, and they did not dissapoint. The service was nice, very friendly staff, even friendly customers. they are in the heart of Dudley square, which to some people may be a turn off, but give them a chance, you will be suprised. The have a decent selection of teas and baked goods as well

"I had the Pancake breakfast". I was invited here by one of the staff members. I have been in Boston for 2 years and find myself very disappointed with the lack of homemade- cozy breakfast spots. OMG! boy am I glad I accepted my invite. The atmosphere is a slice of home (San Francisco). Once I walked in I felt right a home... The workers are incredibly friendly (Not the norm here in Boston) and the Patron- mostly seem to be regulars. Did I mention they have music playing in the background- perfect for you to nod your head to and dance a little in your seat as you inhale the delicious food! perfect volume- not too low and def. not too loud. Ok, here is my takeaways: Pros: -A hidden gem for sure! -Cool San Francisco vibe -Yummy Mango/ Raspberry herb tea -Chicken apply sausages are to DIE FOR! -The chocolate cookie is the BOMB -Loved the Pancakes (Almost as good as my daddy's) :) -Price not too bad (More than chain breakfast places BUT worth every dime) -FREE Wifi -No pressure to finish eating or give up your table -Nice work atmosphere -Not pricey In MY opinion but I do see members of the Roxbury community not able to afford eating here especially if it's a family. Con (Only because I am VERY picky) -My food was a bit cold (BUT that was easily fixed with a new batch) -The Home fries were a little under cooked -The eggs were bland -The average Patron was NOT a person of the neighborhood which is sad... Haley House in in the Roxbury. Dudley Square area and VERY few locals frequent here. -My pancakes had a slight burnt grill taste BUT they were so delicious, I didn't complain. Needless to say I will be returning to Haley House soon. This will be my Breakfast spot.

This place is a really nice treat for Sunday brunch in Dudley Square. Went here this morning with done friends and enjoyed a leisurely morning meal--cheesy grits, baked chicken, biscuits, gravy, fruit, sweet potato pancakes and lots of coffee. All fresh, made to order. Nice vibe in the place, casual, laid back, community-oriented. Best part is that the cafe trains and employees people that face difficulty gaining regular employment.

I've been working in Dudley Square for years now and most of the restaurants don't exactly cater to vegetarians. Haley House, however, is an amazing exception. Everything that I've ever had from here has been delicious! From the sandwiches to the baked goods... even the coleslaw (I normally HATE coleslaw). On top of all of this, Haley House has this amazing mission where they train individuals who normally have trouble gaining employment (ex-cons, formally homeless, those with mental illnesses, etc). Eating at Haley House not only guarantees you a wonderful meal, but also makes a positive contribution to the larger community.

My new favorite place. Woody, lively and with interesting food selections for not a lot of money. Yes, there is parking and an outdoor patio of sorts. No, it's not in the upscale part of town.

Had a fish sandwich special, mac and cheese, and collards. Everything was fresh and delicious. The collards were a stand out. Hints of ginger and other spices I can't put my finger on; they are also pork free. Yum.

Picture a giant, sweet, chewy chocolate chip cookie overflowing with milk chocolate chips. Imagine stuffing the whole thing in your mouth... feeling guilty yet? Here's where the magic of Haley House comes in. Now we know the cookies are made fresh daily, from scratch, sans preservatives of chemicals. But, what if they were made by ex-convicts getting back on their feet, traversing the road to righteousness via delicious baked goods? And what if the coffee you ordered with it was fair-trade and organic? Oh, and if it was all really, really affordable? And if there was free wi-fi so you could actually get some work done and make the trip worthwhile? That's what I thought. And that's just one cookie. Haley House also serves up a mighty impressive array of muffins (vegan banana has my vote), scones, bars, tarts, and other cookies, depending on the day. Their selection of loose leaf teas is virtually infinite, since you can combine any of the dozen flavors to make your own custom brew. Chef Mills's signature jerk chicken has a cult following, especially when in quesadilla form, and for the meat-less crowd, the veggie cutlet plate with collards packs one impressively spicy, vegan punch. Though Haley House is usually only open through lunchtime, you can grab dinner on Thursday nights when the kitchen is open until 8:30. HH hosts a weekly performance series then, called Art Is Life Itself, which starts around 7 (but let's be real... 7:30), and is followed by an open-mic night. Seriously, chowing down on a thai chicken salad or classic soul food plate while listening to interesting, passionate speakers with a community emphasis is no poor way to spend a Thursday night. Plus, if you're feeling thirsty (or are just shy about getting involved in the funny, often heated audience discussions) Haley House offers organic beer and wine all night. More of a breakfast person? Haley House serves up a mean egg sandwich and an even meaner brioche french toast in the mornings. The side of home fries put everything over the top, and of course you can add bacon to anything for that extra oomph. Can't get your ass out of bed before noon? No problem, me neither! Brunch is served late on the weekends, so take your sweet time. As long as you make it down to Haley House at some point, you'll be mighty glad you did.

The food was good. I had the Jamaican jerk chicken plate and a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was simply amazing. The jerk chicken was alright, though I'm definitely no expert. The employees there were very nice and responsive. And on top of all this, it's for a great cause! I'd definitely go back again to try some other things on the menu.

Decided to come here on a Tuesday morning for breakfast. I was looking for a unique experience and one that provided a healthier option, and boy, I found it! I have been here multiple times since my initial trip for breakfast, the lunches and other breakfast items are delicious. The food itself is not the main reason you keep coming back (though it is fantastic), the people and the other customers are truly a community and extremely friendly. They source all of their food products from a locally owned farm and the coffee as well. They are a nonprofit and they use this food service to drive the other community initiatives around South Boston. Support local business and come to Haley House!

I order catering here for work on occasion. It's a great way to supply healthy food for a meeting and also contribute to an excellent cause. Staff we have worked with have been very convenient and friendly. The sweet potato and chicken curry wrap are always big hits, as are the cookies! (not so healthy.) I have never checked out the actual shop, but if it is run anything like the catering portion, I'd say this is a great way to nourish your tummy and your soul.

Great Food, Great Environment, Great Cause. I personally have never eaten lunch at HH, but breakfast is amazing. Whether you're looking for baked goods or breakfast sandwiches, HH is the place to go. They offer a more extensive breakfast menu on the weekend, which includes french toast and pancakes.

Haley House nurtures body and soul! I love taking friends to the Haley House Cafe and sharing a delicious bite--coffee and a baked treat, breakfast or lunch made from local produce and wholesome ingredients with superb flavor. I also love sharing the Haley House's inspiring work--linking an underserved neighborhood to healthy food options and the local food system and providing job training. The vibrant setting is a haven for building community and celebrating local culture and the staff take great pride in their work. We recently had the Haley House cater our wedding and from planning the menu to prompt delivery to the quality and presentation of the spread of hot and cold appetizers and drinks, we couldn't have been more pleased with the catering service. We received many compliments on the food from our guests!

Love this great little place. Came here for breakfast on a Monday morning. The food is delicious. I've actually tried a few items and have not been disappointed. They haves organic coffee, baked goods, breakfast, lunch and dinner. They even have a community dinner every Saturday night. Pay what you can, how many places do you know that are willing to do that?

I used to work in this neighborhood, and this was my favorite restaurant. I liked the delicious food, the calm ambience, the friendly servers, and what the restaurant is all about. I can't say that about too many places. While I can't remember the names of all the dishes I ordered, I remember enjoying each one that I tried. This is why I would walk 15-20 minutes during cold winter days to have lunch at this cafe. Physically, this is a hidden gem in the community (tucked away from the main street), but it is popular due to word of mouth. If you go there, you'll understand why.

Best cafe I've found so far in Boston! Coming from Cambridge, the prices are AMAZING. The pumpkin muffin was super delicious - I devoured it in 5 minutes - and the coffee hit the spot, and was free trade. And there's free wifi. Seriously if there were better transportation options here from Harvard Square (other than the 1, where I witnessed a fist fight between 2 50-year-old women today ON THE BUS), I'd be here all the time.

This is a great little gem. I was in the area, and I needed to kill some time. So I went here. The staff are amazing, friendly and very warm. The coffee was great, the tea was awesome. The people inside the cafe had a warm aura around them. If I lived closer to this spot I'd go here everyday. The prices are great for this economy. All around 4 stars! If you are a spark, Boston's oldest firehouse is down the street...

Everything about this place is literally the best. The coffee is Equal Exchange so it's delicious and has a soul, the tea selection is extensive and delicious and the food is incredible. I work very nearby and eat there preeeeetty much every day for lunch. I always get something different and have yet to find anything I wouldn't give 10 out of 5 stars to. The soups are great, wraps, salads, love the quesadillas, and omg the cole slaw. The staff are legit the nicest nicest nicest best humans in the world, they get to know everyone by name and are insanely welcoming and sweet. Go in once and the staff will remember you and give you a big smile and kind greeting next time you're in. Also the cookies are the size of my face (not an exaggeration) and are also super delicious. Love this place, no suggestions except please keep doing exactly what you're doing. And of course the spirit it comes from and it's purpose is absolutely worth supporting. A truly amazing gem.

I was not too jazzed at this visit. The French toast was soggy well before syrup hit it. What caused this then? Over saturation with butter? I don't know but it was not tasty at all. I was so disappointed. And I was literally the second customer that Sunday morning. I just don't understand how something so easy could be messed up.
