Set out on the 4th of July looking for breakfast. Was about to give up and just stop and Dunkin when we spotted this place. So huge points for being open on a holiday, first of all. The staff was all friendly and full of smiles. There were books and magazines near the entrance to borrow, nice to keep everyone in your party occupied if needed. The food was great. Those homefries were possibly the best I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned and salty. It's funny, they don't look like much, but when you taste them it's a whole different world. The french toast was good. I like thin slices of bread, and this place does that. The only thing I didn't love was the kielbasa. I am addicted to keilbasa for breakfast, and they do have it here, but it wasn't the kind I am accustomed to. It was ok, but not amazing. Everything else was great, I will totally be back! Also, it happens to have the perfect decor for the 4th of July.

Been here a few times now since moving to Boston. It's exactly what you expect it to be. American breakfast, cheap. I've read other reviews and they talk about poor customer service, no clue what they are talking about, have always been treated great. Could I cook this at home of course I could but I don't want to cook that's why I came out to eat. You want gourmet food, go pay $30 a plate for breakfast in Boston.

Nothing really spectacular about this place, to be completely honest. It is exactly as its advertised - American breakfast - except tastes like something I could make at home and not travel to eat. I ordered the French toast with sausage and was highly disappointed. I've had some rocking French toast in my day - these do not compare or even come close. The service was not good, our wait person was really just uninterested in good customer service and well-versed in not answering questions asked by...well the customers. 2 stars because it filled me up - certainly not satisfied, very ordinary place. Try something else if you're in the area. Don't waste your time.

I eat out for a living. Practically. And I haven't had such horrible service both from the staff and the owner. EVER. Tons of attitude and I would go as far as saying they are racist. I am visiting from New York and cannot believe how rude I was treated. The owner was extremely disrespectful and crushed the receipt. My money is just as good as theirs. But was treated like I wasn't entitles to eat a decent brunch with my friends. This place doesn't deserve any money from anyone.

My boyfriend and I usually go to this restaurant every Saturday and we have made it a tradition since we moved here from New York. Usually when we go, we have the same waitress ( the older sweet lady) who is always running around helping everyone. This has been our 10th time here so far-- the food is good and that is why we keep coming back. This past Saturday, we went at about 11:50 am. When we walked in the door- instead of a friendly greeting, the lady who was working ( darkish hair up in a pony tail, probably in her 40's) was so unpleasant. She looked at us very annoyed as we walked in ( she was chatting with people she knew at a larger table) We looked around to figure out where to sit and after a couple seconds, she just said " find a table that's already set" and proceeded to go back to her conversation. Normally, when it is not busy especially, the waitress should at least say hello or welcome you upon entering the establishment and kindly help you find a seat. We seemed to be interrupting her or bothering her, although there was only about 8 people in there. We take a seat by the window-- she comes over and pours some coffee, basically throws the menus on the table. ( mind you, this was about 11:51 am as I sent an email at this time so I was able to check after). By 12:35 pm, she still has NOT been back to our table. 40 minutes waiting to put our order in, is just absurd. My water was already gone, my boyfriend's coffee was empty 15 min prior to this-- and she never came back to take our order! We saw her come out of the kitchen to talk to her big group of people that sat down about 15 min AFTER us-- she was taking their order and then just completely disregarded us. You would think that we would be served ( there was only 2 of us) before a group of 8 people who were still waiting on their party to arrive. This has never happened to us before and we are definitely not one to complain ever. Even in bad experiences, we are extremely friendly people who tip very well regardless of what happened, because I know what it is like to be a waitress. I have been in the customer service industry for 12 years- and now as a Regional Manager, I would hope that my employees do not ever treat customers this way. Maybe she was having a bad day-- but regardless, just forgetting about 2 loyal customers when it was a slow day is ridiculous. We got up and walked out-- at that point we did not want to wait any longer. We will not be back due to this experience.

This place is awesome. What more could you ask for in a little breakfast and lunch joint? The food is excellent, the coffee is great, always hot and kept flowing, and the prices are nearly impossible to beat. There's a reason the line goes out the door on weekend mornings. Reading through some of these reviews, it's hard to believe people are talking about the same place. Some of you yelpers need to get over yourselves, and consider that maybe you're getting bad customer service because you're a bad customer. Some tips: Check the specials on the chalkboard outside - tough to beat. Can't go wrong with the corned beed hash.

Typical "greasy spoon". Good food, home made. Nothing fancy, but don't expect it to be. Parking can be difficult sometimes. Worth the trip.

Worst grits I have ever had. They resemble a soupy cream of wheat. And nothing special about the ham and eggs. The coffee and chocolate chip pancakes were decent. The service is fine as long as you can catch the wait staff to ask for what you need. Wish we had gone elsewhere.

Quincy has some other great breakfast places. My experience a few months ago includes average food and awful service. The older waitress there Rita was extremely rude as a person. and by the looks of other reviews here this isn't unusual. Unfortunately this was back in the Spring and I don't remember exactly what she was saying. It was enough that It was the topic of our entire breakfast conversation and even days later (horrifying). I assume that she's a family member of the owners which is why she's still working. I'm from Quincy and I'm never coming here again and to anyone else, I think you're much better off at Newcomb's, McKays, probably even IHOP down the road. 2 stars for average food and awful service.

I really enjoyed my visit here! unexpectedly. I say that bc we just wanted to go somewhere nearby and cheap to eat, and decided on this lil diner. The ambiance is so sweet, old American style diner. open since 1988. The older lady that works there is so sweet and friendly. The food was soo reasonably priced (cheap) and yummy. I had their famous Beef Hash on a roll for lunch and it was pretty good. just wanted I wanted. My friend ordered the Turkey Reuben with Sourkraut. Pretty good too. I'd def be back and eat there again, such a little neighborhood gem. Just lovely.

Plusses- a varied menue and lunch and breafast are served at the same time. Some good items; grits which can be hard to find, homemade hash-which can be mushy and many seasonal specialties with an imaginative flair. minuses-its crowded, the coffee is merely meh.. the wait is longer than it needs to be and very rarely is there a pleasant waitress. Much of the food is just fair.

Terrible. Never in my life have I had the distinct displeasure of suffering in such as a way as I had during my most recent (first and final) visit to The Early American. The table was unclean, the mug into which my 'coffee' (that sorry excuse for coffee...so utterly weak, those cheap bastards) had been poured was similarly filthy, but the conversations I overheard taking place between the rather geriatric server and my co-resteraunteurs, was utterly entertaining. Within ear shot I was subjected to a barrage of racial slurs primarily regarding the various minority populations of Boston. Yes, that's right... I would never repatronize an establishment that condones racial bigotry in any of its horrific instantiations. Bad form...

The Early American has been my go-to breakfast place since the days of Joan and Joanie. Most days, it is on point, but it occasionally misses the mark. The restaurant is cute, in all of it's Americana glory, and a little bit crowded (not necessarily a bad thing, but worth noting). The wait staff is pretty nice, but words like "warm", "friendly", and "inviting" don't really come to mind. The food, for the most part is absolutely, fantastic and extremely reasonably-priced. However, bron the days that the food fails to meet expectations, it fails in a big way, enough to drive a grown (hungover) woman to almost-tears. Perhaps it's because I know that it's not living up to its true potential or maybe it's because my eggs are runny and my home fries are bland and undercooked and my bacon is burnt. Tl;dr: 90% Amaze-balls, 90% of the time.

My fiancé and I were hungry one morning during winter storm Nika (Feb. 5 2014). It snowed about 6 inches by noon and sleeted for a couple hours. My fiancé, Jamie and I were super hungry, so we decided to venture out for a breakfast diner. The Early American is the closest establishment to her place, so we parked along The Fowler House across the street and dodged across passing plows to merely enter this place. Mind you, this is all happening at about 2pm on a Wednesday amidst a snowstorm, and they close at 2:30pm. So take this review with a grain of salt. We walked in and a frumpy old lady near the door just looked at us, very confused. We look back, but she quickly glanced away and walked toward the rear of the restaurant towards the kitchen. No instruction. Not a word. Wicked rude. Jamie and I assume it's a "seat yourself" kind of place (it at least looks like it is), and sit in the corner booth at the window. Minutes later, the old lady finally comes over and asks us for drinks, and we order coffee before she throws some menus on the table. We glance over the options as she walks away, and moments later she returns, asking for our order. Now, pay attention to what happens next. She asks what we would like to order; nice enough. I order the basic two eggs, homefries and toast, while Jamie asks for the pancake combo (+ eggs and homefries) with whipped cream and strawberries. This woman literally snaps at my fiance, rudely saying that they don't have strawberries, as if she was supposed to know that. Instead, she orders blueberries; easy enough. About 5 minutes later, this freakin' broad returns telling us "we don't have anymore homefries. You're gonna get french fries instead." Jamie and I exchange confused, uneasy glances, acknowledging that we really don't want french fries, as we intentionally ordered homefries. Breakfast food vs. lunch food, right? She continues: "Sorry, it's all we got. We're closing down in less than a half-hour. If we started making homefries, they wouldn't be ready for another 45 minutes," in other words saying 'you don't have a choice, we're going to give you french fries' and as soon as she finished talking she promptly walked away. So there we are, looking at each other like "WTF?" I'm over here thinking, if we had known that, we would've saved them the time and energy, and just have left. When all you order is eggs, toast, and breakfast potatoes, you expect all of the ingredients to be there. No homefries? No problem. But that's like 1/3 of my freaking $5 breakfast. You're not just going to replace it with fries. And Jamie was over here contemplating between that and an omelet. If you weren't so freakin' rude, she would have ordered something else. So I look at my girl and say "do you want me to cancel the order?" To which she nods, uneasily. I walk up to the counter, where the old lady is holding the wall up (lounging about), and I'm like "do you think I could actually just cancel my order?" Oh, HELL no! Here's the poop-storm. She says "you can't cancel it. The cook is finishing up." I say "Well, we didn't really want french fries. That's like, lunch food. We'd rather just cancel it all-together." Then the cook, who I can see through a window in the wall, says "you want to cancel it? Why?" And I repeat, "Well, we didn't want french fries" "Seriously? That's wicked rude" ....Dude, if you have any integrity, then fire your freakin' grandma. "I'm sorry man. If we had known that a third of our breakfast wasn't available, we just wouldn't have ordered anything." He said "They're the same thing. They're cooked the same way, just different shapes." Ok. 1. I didn't order that. 2. They're not the same thing. They're cut differently because they're different foods. Yeah, try offering me mashed potatoes, or potato chips and give me that same answer; 'its just a different shape' my butt. I work in food service, and I know first-hand it's bad form to give a sorry excuse like that to pass off a different product to a paying customer. The old lady's like "well I just told you," and I'm like "no, you told us after we ordered and the cook already started making our food. We didn't have much of an option" I'm like "Well, I'll at least pay for the coffee" And the lady just stands there. Looking at me. Arms crossed. Like some sort of elderly zombie. And I repeat "I can pay for the coffee, it's no problem...or, we can just leave." She says "Well, I'm waiting for him to finish," gesturing through the window towards the pissed off dude at the grill. But he shrugs, and she's all "Waaaht, you want them to just go!?" And at that moment I'm like, eff this ish. I'm out of here. So I go back to Jamie, tell her to get up and grab her coat, and we drive off to IHOP and have a much better meal with a much better waitress for a much better price. All who venture forward, beware. I recommend traveling the extra 10 minutes to McKay's or Kristin's in Braintree. The End.

This story starts with a hair in our takeout corn beef hash. Though unappealing, it's somewhat understandable that this can happen in a fast-paced service setting. When I called to tell the restaurant, I spoke to a man and told him there was a hair in our food. He replied "ok." I paused, waiting for the customary, "I'm sorry about that, let me refund that." When I was met with continued silence, I said "so I'd like a refund on that." The man told me he couldn't refund my credit card on the phone because he "had to look at the invoice," so I drove back. When I got there, the young woman up front very politely apologized. However, when I explained that I wanted a full refund, and not just a refund on the hash, the man from the phone call appeared, this time with much more to say. First, he questioned where the hash was. I said that I dumped it, and he exclaimed "You didn't bring it in???" Apparently, he was prepared to conduct a thorough forensic investigation before giving me my money back. He also seemed outraged that I wanted a refund on the whole meal, apparently insulted that I didn't want to sift through my other food for additional hairs before eating it. After he walked away, exasperated, the young woman again politely apologized and provided my refund. This place might want to consider changing its name to the Late Afternoon American. Maybe with a little more sleep, their attitudes would improve.

Food is decent and reasonably priced. I have to agree with some of the other reviews regarding the coffee, it was meh. The wait staff was ok. I wouldn't say this is the place to go if you want great customer service. I don't think we even got a smile or a simple "hello" when we walked in. For the majority of my time there all three waiters/waitresses were on their phones texting or surfing the web. Our waitress was friendly but took some time to bring us a menu. Once we got our food she sat down with another customer and chatted about going to school and her other part time job. I thought this was odd to do in front of customers but they seemed to have a good rapport. All in all, I probably wont be going back to The Early American. I'll stick to McKay's and Newcomb Farms. The service at these other establishments is way friendlier and the food taste better..

Not bad. The veteran waitress seems incredibly knowledgeable & pleasant as we had of 13 month old with us. I had the (meh) coffee & wife a Diet Coke. Standard thus far. Little one had an apple juice. Today, the omelette special was a cheddar, apple & bacon, w/toast & home fries. I ordered that; wife got the broccoli & cheese. Gotta say, the food took roughly 15-20mins, but worth the wait! -2 stars for tacky/dated decor, weak coffee, & wait time. I would return. Not bad. To the negative yelpers: it's a neighborhood greasy spoon, what do you except?

12 years in Quincy. Never been until this morning with my wife Renee. Perfect breakfast place. Homemade hash, hot flowing coffee. Nice waitress, real old school. No frills, no pretenses just well made food. Do not go too often because I want to go back soon. Fair prices.

I live around the corner and was disappointed by this place before, but decided to give the place a try, hoping for and improvement since I last visited. Unfortunately, my experience was not a good one. I arrived an seated myself. Very shortly, I was greeted and given a menu to peruse. I really like their "Early Bird Special", but since I arrived just before noon, that special was not available. I asked the waitress what the price for the "Early Bird Special" after the special time frame ended. She replied, "about $7 bucks". When I pressed for an exact price, she patronisingly pointed to the price of two eggs and toast and the price for a side of bacon on the menu and then said, "well, it's about $7". I mentioned to the waitress that I could add prices à la carte by myself, but what I had asked for was the price of the special after 9A. There are no similar "combination plates" on the menu for someone who just wants eggs, toast, bacon and home fries. Home Fries are not listed as a side item, so I actually couldn't create a price for myself. So, in the end I ordered to eggs, bacon, English muffin and home fries. About 20 minutes later, the food still had not come. As I watched other people get their food, I decided to leave. When I approached the counter to pay for my soda and told them I was going to leave, one waitress asked "Are you sure?" And I replied, "Yes, my food is taking too long". My original waitress then came behind the counter and said "You're all set". I paused for a moment and motioned to my soda bottle and my waitress said "You're all set.", and waived her hand to dismiss me. No apology was made, no effort was made to see where my breakfast was or to assure me that it was coming up soon. Only a curt dismissal. I then used Yelp to search for another breakfast place in Quincy. Nearby, Craig's Café received great reviews for SERVICE and FOOD. So, I have them a try and was not disappointed. The Early American needs to: 1) Clean up the space - you can keep the Early American theme, but tidy up, dust and make your wall art look neat! 2) Find a friend with a printer and ask them to print some signs. The hand-written coffee price sign looks shady and lends credence to reviewers who question the accuracy of the checks. 3) Ask FOH staff members to wear neat clothing that doesn't look like you've just rolled out of bed. There is plenty of competition on Hancock Street for the breakfast dollar. Sadly, this place cannot compete.

Another update!! This one is more so to thank Rita for her hospitality. My mom, husband, and I had a great brunch date here post Thanksgiving day, and it was so yummy!! Hubs got his Welsh Rarebit again, and my mom and I got our French toast gig on. Thanks for a great brunch :)

This place is dirty, time consuming, and far too in love with crappy patriotic "antiques" and slowly dying to justify it's existence. We ate here and I was far from pleased. It was crowded, I had elbows in my face, a disinterested waitress, and subpar food. I live literally across the street and I won't be coming back unless it's with a bottle of Lysol for my table and the dolls.

i am not eating my breakfast in the quincy center that side very often. It's because of some reason I walk in this store and eat my breakfast over there. Although recommend by an auto repair shop guy, I have to say, was disappointed. The old sever is kind of makes me uncomfortable, i told her i need to keep the menu seeing i need to order anything else or not, after 15mins i just got my food, the check is coming, then another 15mins so, i told her i need to order salad, she give me funny reactions. At last, i told her i need to pay by Credit card, she ask me anything else? just like some other customers saying she is rude. Nobody asking me i am OK with the food or not? i will not back to this store anymore.

The Early American - Home of The Original Bagel Breakfast sandwich. Wow, Quincy has quite the history. John Adams would be proud that Q-town keeps producing trailblazers like the man who invented this sandwich. OK, tongue planted firmly in the side of my cheek. Breakfast sandwiches have come a long way. Progress is a good thing. You don't really want the original. On top of that, the food took a while, and the coffee wasn't all that good. (but I had 3 cups while I was waiting!) On the plus side, the waitress was friendly, and I enjoyed the Welch Rarebit. Yes, I ordered two entrees because I'm a fat f***. But in my defense, I had never seen Welch Rarebit on a menu before and I couldn't decide between the two. I got both. What a country!

Not going here again. The waitress spilled coffee on my leg. Our food took a long time. The table with 12 people got the most attention and the burnt coffee refills weren't free if I remember correctly. The waitress that spilled coffee on my leg has to be 70+ years old. I'm not against old people working to make a living, but there was two waitresses working a nearly full restaurant and hobbling 70 year old was one of them. I've been to better breakfast places and so have you. Find another place to brunch.

This place is excellent! .. The wait staff and cooks have always been friendly and on point. ..I've notice they are always very accommodating to large parties and small children. they certainly do care about EVERYONE who walks into their door... ive read some incredibly awful and untrue comments here . its not a fast food chain folks,. its a warm resturant with a nice touch of old school charm. .. Breakfast / Coffee and lunch specials are always terrific! .. They have hight chairs for small children and their center tables can be moved to around so a hungry large party can enjoy their meal together. . the booths along the walls seat 4 comfortably... ive been going here for a long time and ive never had a bad meal.

We came in because I live around the corner and love breakfast. I should have gone to one of the other great breakfast places in the city. We were seated and handed one menu for the the of us. I was asked about coffee and when it was poured, it splashed all over the table., the waitress then told us that they were busy and they would be with us whenever. We had a 20 minute wait to have our order taken and a 45 minute wait for the food to come out. We were time crunched and almost walked out. The food was great and the only redeeming thing. I had the hash and cheese omelette and loved it. The stars are for the food. The service was anything but good. I will take my money to one of the other breakfast places in Quincy.

I was in the Quincy area, checking Yelp for local breakfast places, and decided to give this place a try. A small-ish family restaurant with one grandmotherly looking woman waiting all the tables, and maybe one cook in back. We were seated fairly quickly and offered coffee promptly. I ordered the eggs and corned beef hash without reading previous reviews raving over the quality. I was sure surprised at how amazing it was. This place could possibly have the best hash I've ever tasted. The person with me ordered the Waldorf Turkey sandwich, and said it was also delicious. The waitress was a little slow getting around, but she seemed pretty methodical in taking orders and serving people. She was quite nice, though. If I have to wait a little longer for exceptional quality food at very reasonable prices, I'll do it gladly. I'll certainly be going back.

Typical diner, but better than many in the area. I got broccoli and cheese omelette, which was fluffy, huge and cooked perfectly. Comes with basic toast (I got wheat), and real potato homefries. Tea is your basic Lipton-grade. They serve a few different items, such as Welch Rarebit and malted waffles. I would go again.

My boyfriend and I were craving a good, home style breakfast to start our day off. We should have gotten the hint that it was going to be a long meal from the moment we sat at our table. We were seated and told the waitress would be "right over". At least ten minutes and three debates about should we leave or not, someone finally acknowledged that we were even there. There was one woman waiting on the entire restaurant, which was the beginning of the problem. I got coffee and he ordered an orange juice that came out when our meal did...42 minutes later. The waitress attempted to give our food to another table because she clearly forgot where she was going...she asked "did you have an omelet and a waffle?" the couple answered "um... I don't think so". The waitress replied "How do you not remember what you ordered?!?!" and had an attitude. I'm surprised that couple didn't leave!! We ordered a waffle and an omelet, which we thought was pretty standard breakfast fare. The waffle was good...nothing fancy with some butter and syrup. The omelet I ordered was broccoli and cheese. I didn't get a choice of cheese, but that's ok because I'm not picky when it comes to cheese!! By that point we were so hungry that we ate everything in about 3 minutes, went up to the counter to pay so we didn't have to wait any longer, and left. The food overall was good. Nothing fancy, but good, home style breakfast. The service was atrocious. Don't go if you're in a rush!

Today was the first time, and last, eating here. My friends and I get breakfast every Sunday morning and typically rotate between Newcomb Farms and OB's. We decided to branch out and try something new today. The restaurant was full but there was no wait. We were in there a total of 90 minutes. For breakfast. It took 15 minutes just to get menus. It took another 20 to take our order. There was no cream left on the table for coffee, we asked about 2 times and never got it so finally asked another table to use theirs. That was after ten minutes and the coffee was then cold. This was pretty much how the whole breakfast was. I'm not sure if one of the servers called out today because one woman seemed to be waiting on every table there alone, but not once did she say "thanks for waiting" or "sorry for the wait". Had she actually acknowledged how long we continued to wait we would probably give this place another chance. She was also extremely cold and rude during the limited interaction we had with her. It was really disappointing. Clearly this place is doing something right because they've been opened since the late 80's, but our food was really bland and not great at all. I just have no tolerance for rude customer service. That alone ruined the breakfast and we all agreed that we will stick to the two places we always go to where it's always consistent with food and service. Wish I had read the other reviews before coming here.

I have to say the early american is awful. In my experience my friend and I went their after a workout to fill up. When we arrived the 70 something year old waitress brought us to a table and didn't get back to us for 40 minutes. When she came to take our order I said "Umm id like" without being able to finish my sentence she says "Don't waste my time if you don't know what you want I'll go to another table" after we had ordered the food was subpar French toast uncooked and when I asked the waitress for some maple syrup she said "You aren't the only person in this restraunt you'll have to wait". My friend and I decided not to tip her for being so rude. She came back to our table giving us dirty looks and said "Don't come in here again on a busy Sunday and not give a tip." Don't go here IHOP or a homemade breakfast would be much better.

The food was good, I had the early bird special (eggs, toast, bacon and potatoes) and the free refill of coffee. The service however was not very good, the 70 year old waitress wasn't friendly to a friend with me who had said hello to her and instead of responding, she rushed by with the coffee pot to refill a customer's cup, never even acknowledging us! Never smiled either. The waitress then came back with our order and when a friend of mine asked her questions after the waitress had volunteered some personal information (her husband having died years ago) she (the waitress) injected a swear word into the conversation! The service is slow and the waitress is rude and not personal at all. The food is the only saving grace, to spite other bad reviews of it. Go here if you have all the time in the world to wait for a table to be cleared so you can sit down at it then wait again for actual waitressing to be done!

The food is descent and the early bird special is a good value, but the older bi- polar waitress might throw you for a loop. I've seen her be mean to customers and then nice to the same people 2 minutes later. I don't think she realizes that she does it. I wouldn't let that deter me from going, just go with that expectation. I find it rather comedic. You just never know if you're going to eat at your mean grandmother's house or the nice one.

The birthplace of the original breakfast sandwich, or so they say - Bagel, fried egg, ham and cream cheese. My hubby and I decided to drop by on New years Day morning for a good old fashioned breakfast. The hubby had the waffles and scrambled eggs and I had the original breakfast sandwich. Both were very yummy and cheap. The service was ok, there was only one waitress for the whole restaurant. We did have to wait a bit for service and for our food but we assumed it was because it was NYD. Since the food was so good and the prices were great, we would definitely return.

Nearby John Adams' house at Peacefield, there's a little hole-in-the-wall diner/dive called The Early American. It's a bit dark in there, the tables, booths and chairs have seen better days, and the walls are decorated with a mish-mash of Revolutionary War Era knick-knacks (reproductions, obvy). The menu is pretty typical diner fare. I had the pancakes (three, large, fluffy) and fella had a more traditional plate (eggs, bacon, toast, home fries). They make their own corned beef hash (side dish or on Irish Benedict), which I appreciate a lot! I was surprised there was no blood sausage on the menu, though. The food was great! My pancakes were really delicious and came with a squeeze bottle of maple syrup as well as a bowl of creamy butter. Fella's breakfast was also very yummy, but how would I know, as he didn't share and left nothing for me to taste?? Will have to take his word for it. Coffee was great, and served in heavy mugs. Waitresses were the perfect balance of take-no-prisoners mean and "hon" niceties. I got three coffee fillups without having to ask. That's my gauge and I like it! Coffees and breakfast for two came to just over $20. You can't beat that. Don't be intimidated/turned off by the outside. It doesn't look like much, but just try it out. Accepts cards at the counter. You can put your tip on the card too, but I left mine on the table.

I usually go during the week, never the weekend, so I cant say much about their service on weekends, but during the week, the service is phenomenal! I love the waitress there. She is so sweet and kind and just an awesome person. Great to talk to and just so welcoming. I've been coming here for years and its sad I never got her name or I'd be more specific on raving about her! When I do come here, I always get the original bagel breakfast sandwhich with turkey and eggwhites and a side of french fries and let me tell u, its the best breakfast sandwhich I've ever had in my life!!! And the french fries are awesome!!! Parking is kind of tough sometimes, but the sandwhich and the staff are all worth parking down the street n walking!

The best steak tips & eggs I've had at a breakfast joint. I'm super picky about tips because mine are the cats ass. The tips here are flavorful, cooked perfectly & they surely don't skimp on the portion. The homemade hash is also delicious. My friends go here a few times a week. And I always know when I crash on their couch after the bar, that there's a good chance we'll come here in the (late) morning.

Across the street -- good breakfast but the hashbrowns weren't that great. The waitress there is such a doll, though! She makes me smile when I come in. Also, the location can't be beat.

This is the type of place that you go to if you want to blow the entire morning. If you just want to catch up with someone in the morning, read the paper, etc. But if you have a meeting to go (like us) then its definitely not the place. There was one nice lady working the entire restaurants (which was big). They probably could have used another person waiting tables as it seemed like there were a lot of people that ordered out as well. I got the corned beef hash. It was a lot of delicious corned beef with a little bit of potatoes. If you are not worried about clogging your arteries ... then this is your place ... it was delicious! Couldn't eat here every day but once in a while if I was looking for a hearty breakfast, I would love to come back!

I used to be a regular here but the service has gone way down hill. The last time I was there with friends from out of town I kept telling them about what a great place it was it was 20 minutes before a waitress even spoke to us and about 35 til our orders came.I was actually embarrassed about taking them there. I literally live three blocks from here and I actually drive across town to get my breakfast now rather then walk three blocks here. The food has always been good. But something has to be done about the service.

I'm amending my original review below because I have gone there two more times since (sometimes when your hungover a brisk walk is far better than getting in a car). I am going to give them another star. It was better. It was still slow to get our food, but the food was better and our waitress was very nice and helpful. So I would go there every once and a while. It was good. Maybe because I had lowered expectations. First impression: My husband and I tried this place since its right up the street from us and figured it would be nice to have a place we could walk to. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I got a basic no frills Belgian waffle with no fruit my husband got steak and eggs. The steak was an iffy order, but he tried it because he loves Newcomb Farms steak tips. They messed up my waffle which apparently took another 15 minutes to make a new one. My real complaint is the service. They are incredibly slow and not personable. They were unapologetic about it. People who came in after us were served well before we were. It just wasn't pleasant. Plus there was something floating in my drink. We'll stick with our usual place.

I have been here a few times - late morning on a weekday, so it's not crowded. I found the waitress (I've had the same one on each occasion), and she is quick (in a good way). I've tried the eggs and pancakes - both dishes were excellent. To me, the coffee is just okay. Pet peeve: They only take debit cards for purchases over $10, which I do not think is legal. I believe that you can make such a limitation on credit cards, but not on debit cards. The merchants do not receive all the money in a credit transaction, so I understand the limit they set for that, but I don't believe that holds true for debit transactions b/c debit transactions are really cash transition - there is no cost to the merchant.

I'm so mad at myself for wanting to try a new breakfast joint in town rather than my usual go-to Newcomb Farms. It took us over an hour from the time we walked in the door to the time we paid our way-overpriced bill at the Early American, and it's an hour I'll ever get back. The service here is absolutely deplorable. I had to ask twice for a water (after 15 minutes had elapsed and i STILL didnt' have it), my fiance had to ask twice for a (very small, bottled) apple juice, the creamer in the carafe on the table had clearly been sitting there since 6am, and our food took forever to come out. In fact, another table that got there 15 minutes after us got their food first. AND, when we were leaving, I noticed a table that had gotten their menus only a few minutes earlier were already eating. Not sure why my omelet and my fiance's breakfast sandwich took 35 minutes. Then when I asked for a side of butter, the waitress was clearly afraid to come back to the table so she set the bus-girl over with it. What a cop-out. I'm not ashamed to admit that we left the waitress a WAY less than 10% tip. She was terrible, inattentive, forgetful, and careless. She probably also spit in my food. Newcombs, so sorry i neglected you today.

I wanted to give this place zero stars....but in all honesty I could not. The food is usually alright. I am not a big fan on the bread or the homefries at this place. However, they do eggs alright...I can see that they are trying. I would like to see the place a little cleaner, and that being said...a little cheaper also. They need to update their menu, their decor, and get better waitstaff. Rita, the only server during the weekdays has a terrible attitude and no customer service sense or skills. She can be a real pain also. The last time I went there, really will be the last time I went there. I am boycotting the place and so should you. If you do go, keep close tabs on your bill, as items mysteriously appear or appear more expensive than listed on the menu. Also, watch the coffee...its burnt and generally sucks. Diner Beware!

This is a great little breakfast/brunch spot. We went at about 11ish on a Saturday and there wasn't a huge line. We ordered the corned beef hash combo (two eggs dropped on a large portion of corned beef hash, home fries, and toast) with a side of grits, the pancake combo (two large pancakes, eggs, and bacon), and the welsh rarebit. The corned beef hash was the clear winner -- not ground up like normal hash but with larger pieces of corned beef. Delicious! The pancakes were fine and the home fries were solid but nothing to write home about. The rarebit was good but tasted really, really strongly of beer, so it is definitely something you only need a few bites of (personal preference here, but I can only take so much beer and cheese in the morning). Overall it was a great, simple brunch and we'll definitely be back for more hash!

So far, I've read reviews mostly talking to breakfast items. While the breakfast is really great here - as is the Welsh Rarebit - the burgers are just amazing. I used to live right around the corner from TEA and would sneak in for a burger once a week. We'd get the burger, fries & shake deal and I've to this day, never had a juicier, more flavorful burger elsewhere. Been years since I've been in there now that I don't live in Quincy anymore but I'm dying to make a trip and enjoy a cheeseburger.

Rita and Jeff are terrific. Great food and service! I am a regular there for breakfast. The best days are Monday through Saturday. The Sunday waitstaff are terrible and non attentive. Be sure to go on a non-Sunday, until something changes.

A Bagel Egg Sandwich with egg cheese ham..... and cream cheese?! Why did I not think of this? Friendly waitress told my bf he could order a packaged deal kind of breakfast vs ordering a side of something saving us a few bucks. coffee was so so. Decor is scary, but they definitely committed to the theme.

It really pains me to write a negative review, because there are so many great things about The Early American, but... well, let's get the good stuff out first: The Early American is a no frills, low-key breakfast restaurant. A small operation, it's not a place you would go out of your way to visit, but it's definitely a name everyone in town recognizes. If you're looking for a "locals" sort of place to get a great, affordable breakfast, this may be it. The food is great, and all at reasonable prices. The Early American combo for only $5? Yes please! I usually get the chocolate chip pancakes when I go, and I can't begin to explain how delicious they are, but pass on the syrup - they're tasty enough as-is. The home fries are another favorite of mine, but as a word of caution to others, I have a bit of a salty palette. They are perfect, in my opinion. Also, if you're a fan of corned beef hash, they have a great home-made dish with dropped eggs on top. If I were basing my review on food alone, I'd be giving these guys a 4, definitely one of my favorite breakfast restaurants. Unfortunately, as much as it pains me to do so, I can't overlook some of the issues I have experienced recently as I feel they may have ultimately led to a potentially lost customer. I have been to The Early American about 6-7 times (usually on Sunday). Unfortunately, for the past three times I have gone I have gotten perhaps the worst service I think I've ever experienced. For three visits in a row, I walked in only to be ignored for at least the first ten minutes. The first time there was only one person working. I can understand slow service, but the issue still remains that the restaurant was fairly empty and I was not even seen for the first ten minutes. Credit to her for being apologetic. The second time there was at least two people working in the dining room. I walked in and sat there for ten minutes, again, with nobody so much as approaching me. In fact, as I looked around, one person was talking to people at a table, while another person was actually sitting at a table re-filling syrup bottles in the middle of the restaurant, casually ignoring EVERYTHING else going on. Someone actually had to point out to her that there was a customer sitting there unattended. This most recent time, I was actually acknowledged right away. Unfortunately, I was given my coffee and subsequently ignored for 15 minutes. Again, there were three people working in a fairly empty dining room. During those 15 minutes, three other parties walked in and had their full orders taken, while I was still sitting there with just my coffee and my menu in front of me. Meanwhile, the same girl from #2 (syrup bottles) was walking around the restaurant and, even after having made eye contact with me several times, never bothered to say a word to neither myself or my server. I decided to get up and leave. I have NEVER walked out of a restaurant. I put some money on the table for coffee, which I did not drink, and began to walk out. My server approached me and said "the food should be coming out shortly." ... Food? What food? I hadn't placed my order???? Again, to her credit, she was INCREDIBLY apologetic and tried to give me back my money, but I had to explain to her that this was the third visit in a row where I got the same type of unacceptable service. I left the money and walked out. I really, really want to look past these service issues, but I just can't. I am a very patient person, but this restaurant really tests my patience. I sincerely think this restaurant needs to reevaluate its service standards, and perhaps institute a "wait to be seated" policy rather than a free-for-all. It's great to be personable and socialize with your regular customers, but not when you sacrifice service to other customers. Also, I'm not sure what that one girl (see example #2 again) actually does at the restaurant, as she has never served me, but if she is going to be floating around the restaurant and SEES an unattended customer, she should at least have the common sense to inform a server that someone is waiting, regardless of her actual duties. Please, please, please, T.E.A., resolve your service issues! You are a BUSINESS first and foremost - socializing with customers and each other, while personable, is a much lower priority. Your food is too good to drive customers away with bad service.

Read other reviews. I got a table on Saturday at 11 no problem. Service was fast and food was hot. There is a super efficient Chinese lady working and the white haired lady I heard laughing. Wonder why all the previous crabbing about?? French toast good, potatoes couldve used some seasoning but were good. Great prices, no frills, fast. I like it!! The white haired waitress is nice. She's talking about being a big Jimmy Buffett fan. Who knew?

I had some family in town over the weekend and we wanted a great big breakfast. Needless to say, we were not disappointed with this quaint, charming, mom & pop, hole in the wall! They have a large menu with an assortment of specials. Good coffee, huge portions and reasonable prices. If you don't want the size in the menu (4 egg omelette for example) they will let you request a smaller size. I love breakfast! Can't wait to go back! Highly recommend the apple pancakes!

This is my favorite breakfast lunch spot. I'm a self confessed corned beef hash freak and this is by far the best, i don't know what Jeff puts in it, but it's amazing. And don't forget to try the burger, it takes a little longer to make but it is worth it!

Great little hole in the wall with lots of history. As far back as our early pioneers you may ask? Maybe not. This place is est. 1988 They claim to be the place of the "original" breakfast bagel. It wasn't busy on a Sunday morning. Simple menu. What I liked: the eggs dropped over corned beef combo. That's some serious corned beef. Definitely homemade, none of that mixed veggies or artificial seasoning that take away the flavor of the meat. This corned beef was pure beef, with the right amount of seasonings. Not over-salted. Truly delicious. I can't recall ever having had one like that. I'm sure there are places where there is more authenticity in the corned beef but this was definitely a happy first for me. Their shakes looked good too. I wasn't allowed to have one. I'll sneak in one day and try though. Service is quick and easy. This place is really a no frill, old-time neighborhood joint with great food. Definitely worth the trip back in time to the Early American... in the future

Went there this morning, I have never experienced such bad service like this. Once seated it took forever for the waitress to come over, than throughout our time there it seemed like we were bothering her. We were there about an hour wasn't till the end of our breakfast that the waitress came over to ask us if we needed anything. At one point we ask for some jam and the look we got was like we were asking for her first born. Lol. Fair to say I will not be rushing back anytime soon. Quincy has so many excellent breakfast spots. This is just not one of them. Customer beware.

One of the worst, most uncomfortable experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. I asked for no ham on a bagel and they brought me out my meal with the ham on it. That was totally okay with me, everyone makes mistakes. Then when I asked for another, I was told to take it off myself, but seeing how the ham juices had been all over the food at that point, I refused. The lady took it back and brought it back to me 20 seconds later saying it was a new sandwich. It clearly was not new, so I had to flag her down (she seemed very annoyed with me) and ask if she just took it to the back and took the ham off. She said she did. It blew my mind, because a minute before I told her I couldn't eat it since the ham touched the food, yet for some reason it was okay if she took it off herself. I really hate being difficult with other people because of my religious affiliation, but she was the one being difficult with me. She took it back and I heard her arguing with the chef talking about how I refused to eat it and that I should just have taken off the ham and ate it. 2 minutes later she came back out with another "new" sandwich. Clearly not a new sandwich, just switched the cheese and egg but left everything else. I just smiled and said nothing because I felt very uncomfortable by how upset the cook and the waitress seemed and did not want to stir up any more controversy I didn't touch the bagel sandwich, paid for it and left. It seems like The Early American has a blatant disregard for dietary restrictions and the staff doesn't seem to understand how important it is for some people. I felt like I was doing something wrong for not eating pork and I have never felt that way before at any establishment. I was with a friend (who I recommended this restaurant to) and it is safe to say I will never be returning. Terrible customer service. Despite all of this, I will say they do have good food at a good price. That was the original reason I brought my friend there, just a very unfortunate visit

The Early American has a good-sized menu with both classic breakfast options and healthy/vegetarian options. The specials are sometimes adventurous, which is great. The coffee is delicious, and the staff is really sweet. The prices are low, especially if you wake up really early to go. If you go during the week, it definitely won't be as busy as a Sunday morning. To the other reviewers: if you need something and the waitress hasn't come by, be assertive! *There's a $10 minimum on cards.

I love the Early American. Best breakfast in all of Quincy. Pancakes, Waffles, Eggs, Bacon, YUM!!! The menu has, LEGIT, not changed in 10 years, and it's fine with me. Everything taste fresh!! Breakfast sandwiches are the same prices that you would pay at Dunkin' Donuts but TWICE the size and definitely not made in a microwave. The Belly Bomber is great if your not craving breakfast food. A 1/3 pound burger with everything served up on an English muffin! Try it with a milkshake!! Made with milk, ice cream and strawberries, bananas, or chocolate!! Delicious!

Good food horrible service. It was not busy for a Saturday morning yet our waitress was very unatentive and when a group came in (her friends) she sat down with them and started talking about the party they all attened the night before. After a good 1/2 hour after we ate without any coffee refills I had to wave at her to get her attention and asked for the check. She gave me the "one minute" sign finished her story for 5 more minutes then brought over the check. Lets just say won't be going back anytime soon. Shame because the food was good

food was fantastic! Home fries were perfect & the pumpkin spice pancakes were the best I'd ever had. The pancakes were dense - which I like - and not airy and fluffy - the heavier the better & full of flavor. Sausage was supreme as were he eggs benny. The service stunk - could you smile? maybe say "would you like more coffee?" instead of "want more?" and nudge the pot? cheer up! It wasn't like you were working in an IHOP with a thousand screaming kids.

All I can say is "Original Breakfast Sandwich". Whoever thought it was a good idea to put cream cheese on a breakfast sandwich is a genius. I have been coming here since I was in high school and while the service is not the best, their food and prices are always great!

Worst customer service in the history of restaurants. "The old lady" never gave her name and was so rude when ordering. If you asked a question she would give a snippy answer back. I will never go here again. It's time for her to retire and maybe the restaurant would have more than 3 tables full.

Really great place for breakfast. We have been a couple of times and have not had anything but great experiences. The hash is fantastic! They have daily breakfast specials that I have tried a couple of times- Pork Chops and Eggs, Steak Tips and Eggs! Service is quick and personable. Sure the decor is a little goofy, but who cares?

Great place. Really laid back atmosphere. Sure the decor is lame, but you're not there to admire the walls. I had the cinnamon french toast (decent), hubby had the barbecue cheese burger which was fantastic! (So he says, I don't eat meat) and mom had the onion, pepper, mushroom omelette, which was super yummy. I'd go here again, but it wasn't something that I'd force my friends to try.

I really enjoy eating breakfast out and like trying out new places. I checked out the Early American based on YELP reviews especially concerning their corned beef hash. I had the hash and eggs. The corned beef hash was delicious. It wasn't like the corned beef hash served at most places that looks like Alpo. This was real chopped up corned beef. The second most important item are the home fries. The home fries here are good but nothing special. The waitress was very nice and I really appreciated that she told me to come back.

Went to the Early American today for breakfast with a friend. The coffee was very good and the waitress kept my cup full. I had the corned beef hash based on the good reviews here. It was outstanding! Real corned beef, shredded, and cooked nice and crispy the way I like it. It was delicious. Our booth was by the window, and the windowframe was very dirty. I needed to hand sweep our table of the salt or sugar that was sprinkled all over it. The dirty appearance is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.

Try the homemade corned beef hash (this is no joke it is not from the can). It is the best I have had! The EA is a favorite of me and my girlfriends for the past 10 years. We often meet her on the weekend to catch up on the events of the week or the evening before. The tables tend to turn over fast so there is not much of a wait. The place is warm and cozy and decorated with local Revolutionary History from the City of Quincy and Boston. There are about 25 breakfast places in Quincy and I will def place the EA in the top 5.

If you are looking for a place with good food then this is your place. But the service I received here completely left me wanting to walk out the door! From the moment I arrived at the restaurant, I was basically ignored. One waitress at the counter told us to sit anywhere, so we did. We did not sit in her section, so we were left waiting for our waitress. She was sitting down with a table of customers with her back to us. When she got up, she went to another table to clear their plates. We waited 15 minutes before she even came over to bring us menus, although she passed us multiple times to get to the table of her friends. After another 10 minutes, our order was taken. While we waited for our breakfast (3 sets of eggs, 2 with pancakes (nothing crazy complicated)) FIVE TABLES who arrived after us were seated, received their food AND LEFT before we even got our food. The waitress at no point during our 45 minute wait for food came to give us an explanation or refill the coffee. Then, once we finally received our food and went to the counter to pay, we were ignored again. Our waitress walked by, along with 2 other staff members, ignoring the fact that we were there to pay and was complaining about her nails. We left our money on the counter with our check and needless to say, no tip on the table. If you want to eat here, I'd recommend take out!!!

Review of the early bird special + Food: Nothing special. The home fries are grossly underpar. + Coffee: AWFUL.. they include coffee with the early bird special and the coffee looks like water and cream in a cup (extremely light and extremely watered down). Overall the early bird special is ok at best for the price

I love this place. Except for the decor, LOL. Of course for historical Quincy near Adams residence, I guess it's appropriate. The service has been 100% great every time. Coffee or tea comes hot and fast and constantly, even if it's not your waitress, they all cover for each other. I have left there with swimming bladder and a coffee buzz. I usually only order the omelettes, but they are amazing. Done just so and gorgeous homefries and toast on the side. OMG, I'm hungry for breakfast and it's dinnertime. Hubby tried the pancakes, and though while delicious they're not my style. Too glutenous/heavy for my tastes. I'm more of a silver dollar pancake girl. This is a great little hole in the wall type of place, but well worth the trip and very reasonable. I have heard the lunches are fabulous but alas I spend lunchtime on weekends without lunch to save the big calories for din din!

This place ought to be called the Late American because that's what you'll be by the time you get out of there. Food is good, but service is slower than molasses. Good place to kill an hour eating breakfast if you need to.

Typical breakfast diner. Very local. Although most people come here for breakfast, my favorite thing here is their burgers. HUGE burgers that are deliciously cooked the way you like it and are super duper cheap! The milkshakes are also to die for.

I looove the Early American. I probably go here once a week or so, and my boyfriend and I stuff our faces, and it's oh-so-glorious. When I'm feeling real hungry, I'll have one of the breakfast combos, or just do the cinnamon french toast with eggs and *crispy* bacon (they get the bacon super crispy 80% of the time, but it's never, ever rubbery). Otherwise, try their "Original" bagel breakfast sandwich. One egg over hard, cheddar cheese, ham, and cream cheese on a bagel. It sounds weird, but it's SO good!! I read a couple other reviews that say something's up with the pancakes, which is true. Not necessarily bad, just different. Not to worry...there are a bunch of other great things on the menu. They have huge burgers that are supposed to be delicious as well! I will definitely keep going back. The staff is nice, and prompt. Within 2-3 mins. of sitting there, even if it's slammed, you'll be given menus and offered a nice, hot, and fresh coffee. Oh, plus it's cheap!! And always served up hot! Yaaaay.

This place used to be great. Then the last few times I went, the food wasn't as good, the portions were smaller and my order has been wrong. The worst was when they brought out our food and there was a hair in it....that was my LAST time there

Went back on a weekday. The quality coming out of the kitchen cannot be denied. Service is still sluggish, but at least I could enjoy it hot this time. The proprietors here should really put an extra body on the floor.

GREAT homemade corn beef & hash - shredded meat and all. The rest is all good breakfast (not amazing) but friendly staff too

I have to say, I think Early American is just right. I love their pancakes and have not noticed a different aftertaste. You can stuff your stomach for cheap. I enjoy the atmosphere tremendously. I love their odd little pictures on the wall. Their food is price perfectly and hits the spot

Love, love, love! The Early American is one of those breakfast/lunch places that you would drive by a hundred times and not notice it (on Hancock St.) in Quincy but once you do go in it is so worth it. The Eggs Benedict is made with bacon and a home made Hollandaise that is always perfect. They always have at least one special that isn't plain old boring run of the mill eggs and toast. They have enthusiasm with food after all of these years and it shows. It is always busy but worth the wait. They do a fantastic job with take-out in case you don't want to get out of your jammies on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

I wish I could give this place higher than two stars. I live in the neighborhood and have gone here quite a few times. I am an omelette guy when I go out for breakfast. I'm particularly partial to a good old Western style, ham and cheese omelette. However the last two times I ordered it from here it was awful. I don't know what type of cheese they were using but I'm pretty sure I had better from my grade school cafeteria. BUT I will say that I'm a fan of the coffee, so if you need a quick caffeine fix stop in.

This is a decent place for breakfast but not so great that I'd return. Reading that the corned beef hash was worth a try, I ordered the hash and cheese omelet, which came with toast and home fries. The omelet was pretty good (the corned beef hash - not something I usually order - was a bit better than I anticipated), so if it's savory egg dishes you want, I'd generally recommend this place. One of my companions and I shared the apple walnut pancakes for "dessert" and I have to agree with one of the previous reviewers - they were just odd. The menu boasts how they're made from scratch (I should hope so...I can mix a box of Krusteaz at home), but I almost felt like they were missing an ingredient, maybe an egg. They were somewhat rubbery, not cakey or light and fluffy...all qualities I look for in a good pancake. The only thing that saved those pancakes were the apple slices and walnuts inside. As for the restaurant and service overall: the interior is pleasant, and we didn't have to wait at all for a table, getting there around noon on a Sunday. The waitress was pretty flat; she wasn't rude, exactly, but I definitely wouldn't return for the service.

I went to middle school and high school right down the street, and honestly didnt mind getting up a few minutes earlier just so I coud stop by here before school started (we would also sneak out during study halls!) The food is cheap and delicious and the service is usually pretty fast. You have to try their milk shakes!

I moved to MA not too long ago and live in Quincy. I love to search for places that are just some good eating, but with a great personable atmosphere; for a breakfast joint I think I have found a place I will definitely go every weekend. The location is past Quincy Center and kind of old, but when you go in you'll know that this is a serious old school breakfast place. Not only are the staff and the owner have the best attitude and are welcoming, but the intoxicating smell of the food just gets you. It can get a little packed, but the wait isn't too long and it's worth the wait (I think). The food is fresh and DELICIOUS. You definitely need to try the Eggs Benedict. I think it was the best I've ever tasted and the omelets are superb. Pancakes can't go wrong... And the homefries.. yum... It's just a great small place to go to for breakfast and get that homey feel. Plus the price are affordable for the amount of food you get.

I was craving a hot breakfast, so I went here on a Monday morning of a long weekend. There were maybe 5 or so other people there, so it was nice and quiet. They only had one waitress working, but she took my order and got me my food in a timely manner. Only complaint I had was that I had to wait a bit longer than I would have liked for a coffee refill, but it did come, and it wasn't an unreasonable wait (I think I'm just used to having someone ready to top you off before you've barely even tasted it! :-P). I had a waffle with scrambled eggs and bacon. I'm not much of a critic, but I think the eggs were probably the best I've ever had. I don't know what they did to them (cooked in bacon grease, perhaps?), but they were delicious! The waffle was crispy on the outside and soft inside, which was very nice. And the price was good. Overall, I would definitely go here again. I can see how it might get packed on a Sunday though, as it's not a very big place.

Now that I have discovered the Early American, I go every weekday. Very good, very reasonable. Get the early bird special (7-9am)...eggs, meat, potatoes, toast and coffee...comes to $3.94! They execute flawlessly every day!

No-frills dining with spectacular diner-style food is the idea behind The Early American. Open only for breakfast and lunch, this place is tucked into a nondescript line of shops on Hancock Street, with little to no signage. However, the place is always packed with locals who know where the best breakfast in town can be found. Full of Revlolutionary-America kitsch, the walls tell a story of a cafe that has been around a long time and has a real history with its clientele. There's no pretense here- you walk in and seat yourself wherever you like (just make sure to wait til the table is clean, please!). Coffee will be offered pretty quickly into their mismatched coffee mugs. The staff is always busy, though very polite and efficient. Tip them well! As for the food- they're famous for their homemade corned beef hash, and with good reason! If you're at all a fan of this breakfast item, this is the place to get it. They've always got a blackboard of specials, but the classic breakfast combos always seem like the way to go. Don't come here with a big group- their table layout isn't designed for any party bigger than 6 and you'll end up waiting awhile for other tables to be clear and rearranged. Prices are very affordable, with even lower prices if you're there in time for the Early Bird specials.
