Food is outstanding, everyone there is very hospitable. Rarely a wait and the food is speedy. Hidden treasure

Not good. Came here for dinner based on all of the terrific Yelp reviews. The food was awful and the service was surly. We ordered tandoori chicken - an Indian restaurant staple. It was bland and dry. Overall, a bad dining experience.

My SO and I came here for a second time and once again the food didn't disappoint. I ordered their authentic chai and was not disappointed, it was creamy and spicy but not too much. We got the veggie samosas and they were insanely good. The chutneys and sauces available to go with them were very well prepared and complimented them perfectly, so much so we insisted on keeping them at the table for use when our main meals came. I ordered a bowl of the coconut soup which was relatively unremarkable but still tasty.. it could have used a touch more spice to kick it up flavor wise. I had the lamb korma and it was amazingly delicious. The lamb was cooked perfectly, and tender and succulent, and the sauce was definitely made with yoghurt and not cream as I've encountered in other indian restaurants. My SO had the chicken vindaloo and he loved every bite. They gave him vindaloo that was a runk below their spiciest and he was sweating it over every bite. He used the garlic naan (which was superb and thick) to sop up every bit of the sauce. The rice our food was served with was cooked very well and had seeds of cardamom in it, which I really appreciated! We were too stuffed to try any dessert, but I'll definitely be back to try the gulab jamun! The interior is nicely decorated (for Pittsfield anyway) and the server was very nice and attentive. Definitely check this place out for yummy indian food!

My significant other an I visited House of India recently and ordered Lassi, Veggie Samosas, Naan, and an entree to share. The food came relatively quickly and the service was very friendly. The mango lassi was a generous portion and was garnished with crumbled pistachios. It was served appropriately cold and was delicious. The Samosas were hand made and hot but otherwise unremarkable. The chutneys however were handmade and notably good. The tomato onion chutney was very fresh as was the coriander chutney. Highly recommend trying both of them. I don't think the tamarind chutney was freshly made but it was good nonetheless. The naan was amazing. Perfectly toasted with little bits of garlic and a healthy amount of butter. I could eat this all day. The entree, mutter paneer, was appropriately spice (as spicy as we ordered it) but the peas and sauce were a bit off (not bad just not amazing). The paneer was good. On the whole it was a very positive experience. I appreciated the Bollywood movie on the TV in the dining room. I will return and try out the dahl.

My biggest complaint is they never put the good stuff on the lunch buffet. (Tikka Masala, etc.) Food is decent. Restaurant is clean enough. Prices are ok (the lunch buffet is a great deal.) Also, they are rather rude and always on the phone...

Surprised by the poor reviews, As a fan of Indian food, this is the real deal, good, fresh, quality, handmade menu items. If you're hesitant to check this place out, try the 9.95 lunch buffet. The Vegetable Korma is my favorite. We loved the fresh chutney's and the super fresh warm goodness aka naan. On my visits I've enjoyed watching the TV stations (many of which are still censored in India) and listening to a mix of indi-pop and carnatic music. This was a solid Indian meal, they keep small chafing dishes on the buffet but are quick to refill them. The decor leaves a little to be desired, but it's a great location if you're taking a walk through downtown. While you're in the neighborhood, check out Wild Sage, a unique shopping experience, always new second hand, vintage and antique items, HUGE selection of books, great guy, fair prices. The pairing of the two, House of India and Wild Sage make for awesomeness

This is a solid 4 star meal, but I feel as though I have to compensate for the other knee-jerk reviews that almost steered my wife and I away from this excellent meal. Having tried indian dishes all over the world, and many in various cities in the US, I can comfortably say that this is a solid indian meal at a reasonable price. The service was great to boot! Don't miss this spot if you are in the berkshires and have a hankering for a tasty indian meal!

So I was in Pittsfield for a meeting and I passed this place on the way. I walked over to grab some lunch, took a seat, placed my order, got some water and the waitress returned to my table to inform me that I couldn't eat the "lunch special" I ordered IN THE RESTAURANT. I would have to order the entree if I wanted to stay and eat my meal there, or I would have to take my lunch special and I assume eat on the sidewalk...or on a park bench...perhaps in my car. Who knows. I asked whomever the manager/owner was if he was serious. He said yes. So I left. One of my worst restaurant experiences ever. You suck House of India.

Poor service, fair food. Last year my wife and I stopped here for dinner and really enjoyed both the service and the food. A year later we had a very different experience. The women who sat us promptly forgot about it. 5 minutes later we called her over and she said "have you ordered yet?" We didn't even have menus which she apologized for and brought them over. 10 Minutes later we finally got our order taken by a unhappy looking waiter, and the women had disappeared. 45 Minutes later our food came. Yep, it was 60 minutes from walking in the door to eating. Maybe the food was better then a one star because we were hungry...

This place is consistently tasty. I've always done take-out so I can't speak to the service. But it was very well-priced and always yum.

My boyfriend and I decided to try this restaurant for dinner one night. We were staying in so we ordered take out and called ahead. We ordered 2 dishes and naan. We were told to come in 15 mins, when we showed up to pick up the food we were told it would be 15 mins longer. So 15 mins later we try again, luckily the food was ready but we got completely wrong items in the order and were over charged as a result. The food that we did get wasn't the best, but edible. I would not recommend this place.

Ordered the chicken tikka masala and appetizer sampler. The samosas were amazing. Everything was excellent. I noticed that they had a lunch buffet. I will have to try that the next time I am in town. Love this place!

I am in Amherst and we have a Palace of india and when I eat there I feel like I'm eating at a small house with food that's not so good. House of india in Northampton is so great I feel like I'm eating at a Palace. Just goes to show humility sometimes can be a sign of talent. When I was going to school for my masters in NYC there were basement Indian places that had some of the most amazing Indian food I have even had. This place takes me back there bt I get to eat somewhere classy for a change. Hose of india in my favorite Indian place in New England and in my opinion oly compares to a few places in NYC and one in England I ate at. It rocks.

I've eaten at many Indian restaurants in New York and throughout New England over the past fifteen years and I must say that the House of India is truly amongst the worst experiences that I've ever had. I found the cuisine to be bland, the service very poor, the wait time highly inadequate and the menu extremely over-priced. In my opinion, Lazeez Indian and Pakistani restaurant in Albany, New York is a great place to find excellent, reliable service and food and for all of those motivated foodies in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, a fourty-five minute drive is well worth the extra effort for a good, reasonably inexpensive meal.

Food was great, service was so-so. A smile might not kill these people. The secret to getting in and out quickly is to go 40 mins before closing time. That's the secret to speeding up the service. The Chicken Vindaloo is good, but very spicy, you've been warned.

Wonderful buffet lunch. Only a few selections but enough for a perfect lunch. I tried a few things I'd never had before. We loved it. And so inexpensive. Highly recommend. Especially for those not sure of Indian food.

We were a bit hesitant based on some of the negative reviews, but I am glad we did not stay away. My BF and I are happy to have found this play, so close to home. I couldn't find any fault with anything that we had. We had veggie samosas, naan, chichen biryani and gobhi alu. Everything was spot on. We asked for it a bit more spicy and they delivered. The chutneys and sauces that were served were fresh and delicious. The portions were generous. The server was attentive and everything came out quickly. The atmosphere is cozy and pleasant. We will definitely be back! I can't wait to try some of their other offereings.
