There are many good restaurants in Newburyport. This one stands out. Great service, great food, and wonderful ambience. I can't wait to go back!

On a weekend break in the area and went there on a Saturday night based on a recommendation by a local. Very imaginative menu, great service, everybody in our party of 7 left very happy. Oysters were a real hit and so was the Lobster Bake. Nice interior, friendly staff.

Although I don't eat meat or fish, I still enjoyed this place. The evening we went they had a vegetarian soup. I had a nice grilled asparagus salad and pasta dish for my main. The interior is lovely and our service was great. I'll definitely go back.

Had a wonderful lunch here. FISH TACOS!!!!! Ah-maze-ing. I said to my server, "holy shit these are so damn good," and she was like, "I knoooow, they're my favorite thing on the menu." Salad was just greens (boring) but the dressing was lovely. Friend got steak and fries, which were great.

Most amazing food and staff. Had the best meal of my 43 years last night. Can not recommend enough. Only wish we could go more often. Love it!!!!! The "lobster bake" they have on the menu is incredible

I really, really like Brine. To start, the space was welcoming, featuring a long bar, and the service was super friendly and helpful. Daily selections of caviar and oysters are always awesome. I love the fancy plates. This is my type of food. Both the scallops and filet were cooked perfectly and all the components on the plate worked together. I can't wait to go back (I seriously almost went back the next day). Worth a drive from Boston.

As fans of Ceia, my wife and I decided to check out Brine... the place looked inviting and the menu looked intriguing, so we finally ate here last night. Service was great; friendly and knowledgeable. We made reservations and got a great seat in the window at the front of the place. We started out w/ some oysters and prosecco, always a great pairing. They had five different oysters on offer, including one from the West Coast. Pemaquids FTW, though the Standish were nice too. The only thing that wasn't so nice was the price...at an average of $3.50 per, it can get expensive in a hurry, esp when you add in a bottle of wine. We sampled the mignonette and the habanero creme fraiche. The mignonette could have had some chopped shallots in it, and the creme fraiche was tasty but a little goes a long way. The first oyster was obliterated by pepper taste, so go very sparingly. We decided to do some small plates and a salad rather than the entrees. The grilled baby octopus were good but not great; a little bit dried out and slightly chewy like jerky, but the garbanzos and peas were great. We also opted for the steak tartar, which had a clever arrangement of various things piled atop the short stack of chopped raw meat. egg (both slivered whites and tiny crumbles of yolk), caviar, pickled mushrooms, etc were great flavors to accompany it, though more than two small triangles of toast would have been better. One note on the plating; they seemed to go out of their way for a super arty arrangement, sometimes to the point of unintentional comedy. smears of unidentified substances were painted with a swath, and the food (cf. salmon crudo) was piled in a small crescent at the end of the dish. Speaking of the salmon, it was fine but overall kind of uninspired. Basically lox and cream cheese in terms of flavor. The scallop ceviche was far better, and probably the best thing we ate all night. The pace of the meal was great, and as noted our server was really nice. The place filled up to capacity but the noise level wasn't too bad. The wine list is pretty deep, and I would imagine that the crudo plates get rotated around as the weeks go by so even though the menu is somewhat limited, I would imagine there's always something new on offer. The downside here is the price. After oysters and wine, we each had a salad, and split two small plates and the two crudo. Looking at the dessert menu roped us into the panna cotta, also delicious. The amount of food is fine, and we weren't overly stuffed, but with tip it was also over $300, which is a lot of cash to drop for a non-Boston restaurant. We'd likely go back, but I think Ceia is overall a better value with just as good food.

We sat outside at a table for two over Memorial Day weekend. All the inside tables were reserved, but we wanted to sit outside anyway so it worked out well. We started with a half dozen oysters. One of our choices was sold out, but the waitress -- Marissa -- recommended a different oyster, and that one turned out to be our favorite! Speaking of Marissa, she is a fabulous waitress with a great and genuine personality. She gave helpful menu recommendations, including food and wine. I also asked for the salmon entree without beets, and she accommodated my request with flying colors! Instead of beets, I had some delicious and perfectly cooked asparagus and pea puree (instead of beet puree) with my salmon. The rosé of the day was also DELICIOUS and much needed after a sunny day at the beach. Overall, we had a fantastic meal with no leftovers and wonderful service!

Fabulous exciting menu! I would highly recommend this restaurant. Fresh and interesting menu. I've never had a better filet, the blue cheese polenta went perfect with it. The peppered tuna was excellent. The special entree was himachi tuna from Japan, our taste buds were ecstatic. Each entree was beautifully presented. The service is impeccable and staff is very knowledgeable of the menu, regardless how busy they were. If you're in for something new, exciting and delicious I would say make reservations for the weekend and go.

Didn't enjoy the food too much. But the wine was delicious. The server was well versed on the specials and guiding into the best dish for me. Would go back again depending on what's on the menu at the time.

We took a Labor Day trip up to Newburyport and gave Brine a try. I think the bar is the place to sit and watch the action. We split a dozen oysters and I had some Prosecco. The oysters were quite good. My husband got clam and pork chowder, crispy pork belly, potatoes, and smoked clams. I had never tried pork belly. It's like little, tiny pork rinds! Very good. I had the heirloom tomatoes, yellow tomato tart, basil pesto, white balsamic which came with a little baby quiche-like tart. Delicious. They were out of the yellow fin tuna, avocado, pepperoncini, radish sprouts crudo so I got prawns and grits, poached egg, cucumber shallot fondue without the egg. It was rich and delicious with two large prawns. All the food was so rich that that was plenty for me. My husband got the artic char, tarragon fettuccini, carrots, fennel, and walnuts. The tarragon fettuccini was very good. All in all, everything was good and the atmosphere was nice. It reminded me a bit of restaurants we visit on Nantucket. They have a little outdoor seating in the front and there is a paid municipal lot nearby.

Do t miss this place. Great ambiance.stopped for lunch. Grazed the menu. Stuck to the seafood. Oysters, chowder and scallops all perfect. Don't miss the chowder. The deconstruction and reconstruction is unrivaled.

Fantastic and unique seafood spot, just great! Had 2 crudos, fish tacos and a dozen oysters - all excellent! Our server Sarah recommended some of these great items and was very sweet and helpful. Cocktails were also excellent. We will be back!

Had lunch there on a Friday during a day trip. The style embraces the original brick of the old days a metal of a modern industrial look while staying warm. I had fish tacos. Done beautifully and tasted great. My wife had the steak sirloin and it was also cooked great. A slight crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. I would give a 5 star but I'm not a calm or oyster person. That's their niche. Priced fair for an upscale experience. Steak priced a little high based on how much you get. I would go back again.

I know it is a seafood place, but would a simple vegetarian option kill them? I emailed nicely and was met with a very rude reply from a "Nancy Casewell" to try Ceia instead, which also has no veggie options. Won't be going here for a mere cocktail based on her rudeness.

  • Rosy R.

Seriously, at these prices, how dare Nancy, the infamous owner have servers like we experienced tonight. The bar tender who belongs in a sports bar, loud, obnoxious and rough. The idiot oyster shucker who took 15!!!!! Minutes to open 4 little necks, and literally could not figure out the oysters. It was shocking, for a special night out with these prices, we are done.. No more. Oh and ps, the 4 little necks were served on a platter of dirty crushed ice and a platter big enough for a dozen or more

I owe a big thank you to the yelp family for this one. THANK YOU! I was in the area headed for a sandwich shop except they were closed and yelp rescued our grumbling bellies. Brine is a small intimate roughly fifty seat restaurant that's doing it right. It's name starts your tastebud journey off well. They now the sea and the sea loves them. A separate menu of oyster selections. Main menu beams of the chefs take on classics like the chowder (OY) and fish and chips (x2 oy). This made me appreciate the special dish of pulled pork fried oysters and a fried egg on Ciabatta that I had to try while my brother got the fish and chips. Oh yes we both had a bowl of the chowder don't you worry- it's a must try. They assemble the bowl with the perfect amount of clams with the creamy leek broth with a delightful chunk of pork belly. The sandwich was a divine concoction that only an eccentric chef would compose. I would trust this kitchen with anything on the special menu. The fish and chips was great - the fries were hand cut thin. House made ketchup was a bit sweet. Our waitress made note that they make almost everything from scratch. They do house made bread service for dinner. I believe the owners also own ceia- add it to the list!

I love everything about BRINE. To me, three stars means, "A good, satisfying meal that you probably won't remember 24 hours later." Four stars indicates something more: inventive creations, memorable flavors, a beautiful place to visit, a place you want to return to soon. If you give something five stars, you're talking about the sort of meal that is the highlight of the month. BRINE is that kind of place. In a state full of great seafood joints, very few can match BRINE's menu, staff, or atmosphere of jaunty, jazzy fun.

I have to say, this might be my favorite bar/restaurant of all time. First time I went here was just for a few drinks and oysters, and my wife and I were dazzled. Just from sitting near the service bar, my wife wanted to order about every drink that went out. All of the juice in every drink is freshly squeezed, and the presentation is top notch. My wife is a cocktail and wine drinker, and her favorites are the exfoliator(cucumber bitters and vodka, fresh cucumber, sparkling white wine, something along those lines), and the chateau nicot white Bordeaux. The wine list is extensive, and the bartender, Drew, could not be more knowledgeable and helpful with any questions that we had. The whole experience was fantastic. The second time I came was for an entire meal, and the food completely lived up to the expectations that were spawned during my first visit. I had 3 different types of oysters, my favorite being the north haven petites from Maine, which were small, packed with flavor, super fresh, above average brine in front followed by a lingering whiff of seaweed sweetness in the finish. I also thoroughly enjoyed the beach points and nantucket oysters. Although no pacific oysters were on the menu for my second visit to Brine, I can say that I was very impressed with the salt nuggets and chelsea gems that I sampled during my first visit. During both visits, I was lucky to be guided through my oyster experience by Bruce, the guy who is Brine's master shucker and a sort of sommelier of bivalves. Outside of the raw bar, my wife loved the 5 grain salad, and I had 2 different crudos, both the salmon and the bluefin, featured as a market special. I was blown away, especially by the bluefin, which was accompanied by brown rice puffs and pickled blueberries. I consider myself somewhat of a tuna connoisseur, and Brine's offering more than stood up to some of my favorite sushi spots. A few other delicious details...the coffee was french pressed to order, and on par with the gourmet brews that I usually only get from my home kitchen. I'm not usually a sweets guy, but the white chocolate raspberry dessert with pistachio crumble was out of this world. The presentation is epic, and the flavor lives up to the aesthetic in every way...wow. Lastly, as an enthusiastic drinker of all things whisk(e)y, I was beyond thrilled with the bar's selection, in particular the High West double rye and the Dad's Hat Port finished rye. I love a good rye in general, and these are two of the best I have had. With the amount of bourbons and ryes on Brine's menu, I can't wait for my next visit. 5 stars, and I have yet to try any of the steak offerings from the menu. Can't wait to go back!!

Presentation of the food was nice and the wine glasses are beautiful. Only 2 salads and a risotto dish for vegetarian options. The menu was completely different then what the online menu mentioned. I was hoping to get a cheese board or Burrata but they didn't have any of that. Also the bar seats are wicked small and uncomfortable.

Surprised this place is still in business. Worst restaurant in Newburyport. Physically uncomfortable place to sit and dine. Menu small and disjointed. Expand Loretta's!

Quaint, but pricey, seafood fusion restaurant perfectly located in the heart of downtown Newburyport. The oysters are a must: nice selection of Massachusetts oysters that are fresh, full of flavor, and delicious. The pork and clam chowder is also delicious, but be aware, this isn't your typical clam chowder: it's more brothy than creamy, and isn't very chunky (read: there aren't many clams, and no potatoes.). It's more of a smoky clam soup, but was really good. For an appetizer, you have to have the bacon and eggs: two small pieces of bacon, one egg over easy, with five or six delicious fried oysters drizzled on top. This was unique and absolutely delicious. They actually have a sandwich that has all of these elements in it. Next time I'm getting that. I had the spicy cod sandwich for my main course, and it was absolutely scrumptious and perfectly seasoned, on delicious fresh ciabatta, with a fresh bed of lettuce and cucumber that gave the sandwich a great crunch. My wife got the fish and chips, which was very fresh, just not much character or flavor. Lots of batter, with just a small amount of white, fresh, flaky fish. we thought this was okay, but could've been better. I have to mention the beer selection. They have about 15 to 20 bottled beers(none on draft) from all around the country, specializing mostly in local breweries. All really good and fresh, Great variety. The ambience is hip but warm and the restaurant itself has tons of space. However, I will say that the tables are pushed a little too close to each other. On two occasions, I was nearly slapped in the head by someone putting on their coat. Also, we had a table, but just looking at the barstools, they looked awfully uncomfortable. Service was great. Both the hostess and waitstaff were extremely friendly and attentive. All in all, this place is a real find. Great service, food, and beer selection. They still have a few kinks to work out, and it is a bit on the pricier side, but if you're in the area, it's definitely worth checking out.

Superb. Smoked Hamachi Crudo, Five Grain Salad, Pork & Clam Chowder, and, of course, oysters of the day to start.

A reservation is helpful, and plan to come here when you can ignore the price on the bill. My wife and I come here a handful of times a year, and the one occasion either of us didn't really like something, it was due to our particular tastes and not really understanding the dish based on the menu description, no fault of the chef's. Last time we actually just swapped plates and were happy as clams. Or perhaps oysters... Speaking of oysters, you really can't pass them up. The availability based menu is great, you really never know what they will have but they always seems to have a variety of oysters from small or large, sweet to briny, and this helps everyone find an oyster they enjoy. We have also never had bad service here, at all, wouldn't even dream of it as a possibility. A must visit for anyone who loves contemporary cuisine, oysters, crudo, and chops. Oh, oh, and don't forget the drinks! Best cocktails in town, especially now that Enzo is no-longer. The beer and wine list is also very good (although I do wish the beer list wasn't so dominated by Belgians/Saisons). Brine is a class act. P.S. Eat the chowder. Do it.

Had lunch here today all in all its a decent place. Would I go back I guess if someone asked me to meet them here, wouldn't return on my own. I had the baby romaine salad and a cod sandwich. The salad was $9 which is fine but there was really not much to it at all. Dressing was very light to non existent, and I am one to usually under dress my salads. The cod sandwich was well prepared and seasoned very nicely, I would recommend this dish to anyone dining here for lunch. Beer list was decent. My main problems where when we arrived our table had crumbs on it, but not just on the table itself on the bread plates as well. Kind of a turn off, but whatever just brushed it off as it was lunch and we would not be using any of the bread plates anyway. The major issue was the amount of flies there had to be 4/5 flies flying over our table and on the window inside the restaurant. Maybe they leave there door open on cool days and hopefully this is why. Regardless it's not something you want to see as you are about to eat food or especially seafood for that matter. Maybe investing in some sort of a indoor bug zapper would be a good move. Anyway in short food is good overpriced for what it is but good.

Crudo options were good the night we were there. But the BEST part of the meal was the hand rolled pasta. We will return for the pasta!

We love Brine. It has a very clean decor with the requisite exposed brick. They shuck the oysters at the bar, which is fascinating to watch. They also have a varied and supply-dependent oyster list, so you never quite know what they will have but we've been pleasantly surprised more than once. Pros - Most menu items are absolutely delicious, including the butter (rather than mayo) based lobster roll. Think mascarpone cheese. Cons - A little expensive by Newburyport standards and the bar isn't very deep, meaning if you're fairly tall, you will have to lean very far forward not to be eating over your lap. Also it can be difficult to get a table, just make a reservation in advance.

*Just as a warning this review is for the lunch menu which differs greatly from the dinner menu.* Took my father to Brine today for his birthday along with my brother. It is a beautiful establishment and the cleanliness was almost spot on. It was quiet due to the early hour and the rainy weather. The wine and beer menus are extensive and both my father and brother really enjoyed the beers they selected (they don't have beer on tap). They both had the chowder which they both liked but agreed that though very flavorful really does not resemble fish chowder as we New Englanders are accustomed to. I say be brave and try it! They both ordered steak and I had the cod sandwich. It was all cooked to perfection and was just enough food to make you satisfied instead of stuffed. They timed things well and pacing was good, no feeling rushed or that we waited long for our soup and main course. It was a pretty expensive meal for the three of us but I think it is worth it with very good food, great service and a very nice atmosphere. I would be interested to see how they perform when things are busy and I am sure the dinner menu is off the charts compared to lunch. Hopefully I get the chance to come back here at night to experience from a different perspective. Overall I think it was a wonderful lunch.

I've had drinks/apps and dinner here maybe 4 times now and each time have been really happy. Yes - the bar is a little weird to sit at (no room for your knees/legs) but it's not the end of the world and you can sit at a table if it bothers you that much. The crudo is like a work of art - delicious. The bacon and egg appetizer was delicious and frankly worked as an entree if you're not starving (a delicious poached egg, pork belly, maybe 5 or 6 fried oysters in some awesome green/slightly spicy sauce). I had halibut another time and it was perfectly cooked. I had the deviled eggs (with the yolks replaced with a sort of spicy tuna mixture) and the tuna was divine but the egg white was a tiny bit rubbery - that's been the only dish that didn't completely wow me though. Last summer I had some kind of chilled cucumber soup with smoked scallop that I still think about occasionally - a totally epic soup. Even the bread/oil/butter is delicious - can we take a minute and praise good crusty bread? I am so sick of weird sweet bread, brioche, molasses bread. Give me a perfectly cooked baguette slice and I'm happy. Bar tenders have been really friendly, recommended great wines, offered a taste when I was indecisive. Seriously delicious seafood/oysters/crudo.

We took my parents to dinner here after we had tried Ceia and were blown away by the flavor experience there. We heard Brine was the sister restaurant and felt we wouldn't be disappointed. We weren't! My dad wanted oysters so this was definitely the place to go. They had Welfleet oysters (which are my favourite), and they tasted just as good as when you have them in Welfleet. I had the chowder with smoked clams and crispy pork belly.. It was amazing! Each of us got a different fish, and I'm not sure which one was the best! I had the Monkfish, my wife and my dad got the Arctic Char and my mom got the Swordfish. Everything was cooked perfectly! The grilled and lightly seasoned exterior held in the moist, meaty center that melted in your mouth. Every one of us said it was the best fish we've ever had. Everything in each of the dishes perfectly complemented the fish. The service was perfect and the whole experience was just spectacular. It's not a super cheap place and it's generally not huge portions (although our entrées did seem to be very good portions) but it's a quality flavor experience with great service. I was actually surprised about the entrée portion size. Usually places like this have even smaller portions. If you like seafood, flavor, quality, and great service you'll love brine!

In a word...awesome! I always read Yelp reviews but never write them. I was quite motivated to post this first time effort. The food was fresh, clean, inventive and very satiating. A real find.

Nice atmosphere, interesting non-standard beer list. Stopped in for some oysters, clams, crudo (fluke, salmon, tuna), and chowder. The crudo and chowder were both very good - with the chowder verging on exceptional (slight smokey bacon flavor). However, the portion sizes on the crudo were a bit on the smallish side...maybe I'm not cultured enough to give up entirely on portion size versus taste. Overall everything tasted great and I definitely liked what else I saw on the menu so I would say it's worth a visit.

Very good food in a nice location. Shell fish of course are extra tasty and fresh. Other fish are quite good as well. Meat options (or basically, non fish options) are limited and expensive. Basically the take home message is that everything is really good. But holy moly it's expensive! An app, two drinks, and an entree nearly sent me to the bank for a second mortgage. Thankfully it was pay day.

This place is not good. The sister restaurant, Ceia, which is directly across the street is fantastic. I've been there a few times and it's always amazing. Brine on the other hand. Just not good. Maybe we came on a bad night. The service was excellent, no complaints there. The food lacked any sort of seasoning and was so incredibly bland. I didn't even like the bread they brought out, very doughy and just a weird texture. It tasted like the bread I made in home economics in 4th grade. The oysters were not top choice. We tried 3 different kinds of oysters and did not like any of them. The staff did not to a good job of cleaning the oysters or selecting the prime grade. If you are an oyster snob, avoid this place like the plague. I ordered the seared ahi tuna for dinner, which the waitress covered in some kind of cream sauce upon setting the dish in front of me. Cream and raw tuna? Yuck. My boyfriend ordered cod and veggies. The dish lacked any flavor, and it looked like a 3 year olds dinner of mushy peas and carrots. I really wanted to like this place, but oh well. No idea how it got 4/5 stars, Yelp has never lead me wrong!

So there were so many yummy moments during this family gathering but way too many inconsistent meals. The oysters were fine (sauces were exceptional), two of the swordfish dishes were under-cooked... Pink. Thankfully, one of our guests was OK with the more translucent piece of fish so we traded plates. One of the steaks was sent back because it was actually cooked well-done when ordered medium-rare. Service was outstanding but I won't be back, due to the aforementioned issues (and the price) for a mediocre meal.

I so wanted this place to blow my socks off...the bartender, Nicolette, the oysters, the Hake crudo and the decor were the best parts of the evening. The bar, as gorgeous as it looks, is not functional for seating for more than 10 mins. It needs to be reconstructed for seating, and I'm sure that is not going to happen, as it looks like they spent some $$$ on it. The chairs need a little help, too. Its like sitting in the original chairs at Fenway. Unfortunately, with choices like SALT and Barrel House, I would not put this resto on my rotation: the flavors lacked the "zing!" I was looking for (cod; cockles and chorizo) and it was very overpriced, both food and wine :-( Boo. I'd recommend BRINE for a glass of wine, oysters, and an appetizer= That's all folks!

hit or miss. considering the price-point they are hitting, it should never be miss. stick to dollar oyster night. at times there seems to be more interest in catering to hipsters than paying attention to the quality of their offerings.

Our second time here, we met friends for lunch on Sunday of a long weekend. Hubby and I had a shrimp appetizer, 4 fresh shrimp, quite tasty. Prices are quite high and portions quite small. Our friends shared a cup of chowder. Their complaints were numerous: 1 minute piece of pork, 2 small clams, the rest broth. For $11. Yikes. I had fish and chips, good but small, the sausage sandwich was good and po boy was ok. The restaurant was extremely warm. Alcohol is pricey, there are no draft beers, oysters also very expensive, I think they have work yet to do.

My husband was nervous about this restaurant but loved everything from start to finish. The fresh made focaccia was worth the carbs! The cod served over the split peas was a daring choice for my husband but he ate every last bite. I had the salmon with fresh spinach fettuccine which I also finished. The selection of oysters was very good and we enjoyed theses along with the homemade vignette served along side. Our server Neil was great and allowed us to have a leisurely dinner. My only complaint would be the warm temp inside. Wear short sleeves and you will enjoy a wonderful inventive take on local fare

Number 1 spot in Newburyport by a long way and would be a standout in Boston. Can't think of a better place to spend a summer afternoon at an outdoor table with a tray of oysters or a snowy winter night at a window booth with a perfectly cooked ribeye. Consistently good service; attentive, knowledgable and friendly. Haven't seen many missteps on the menu and seasonal updates keep in interesting. Oysters and the accompanying sauces always well prepared. Salmon crudo is a standout. The perfect neighborhood restaurant for locals and visitors alike.

I had dinner here last night and came away pleased. My lobster newburg was decent, though a bit sparse on the lobster meat, and not quite as flavorful as it should have been. We also had the "mache" salad, which was excellent, the salmon crudo, which was beautiful and delicious, and the salmon entree. The salmon was very fresh and perfectly cooked. I would have given Brine 5 stars, but for the atmosphere and service. The waiter was solicitous and attentive, to the point of being intrusive. Everything we ordered was met with a "Great Choice!" or a "That's my favorite!" Two minutes after bringing each course, he stopped to ask "how's your ...whatever...?" And the place is LOUD! It was very difficult to hear my friend across the table; we ended up leaning over the table to talk. The beer selection is wide-ranging and classy.

For this type of restaurant it just doesn't get any better. Salmon crudo was divine. A wonderful and varied selection of oysters. Great salads. The special, a prime beef sausage with tiny baby Manila clams, was divine and unlike anything I've ever had. Kudos to the chef. We will be back :-)

What a great find - two restaurants open after 10 PM next to each other. Nice décor could use some sound baffling (lots of hard surfaces). Well stocked with wine choices and a nice food selection. We went with the chowder and oysters Rockefeller. Chowder was good, but not plentiful. Oysters were delicious. Just the right amount of food for a late night meal after a concert.

The oysters & service are 5 stars. The non-oyster items were 3-4 stars. Overall value for $$$ spent = 4 stars. Go for oysters and cocktails!

Whenever we are in the Newburyport area a great issue we struggle with is do we want to eat at Brine or across the street at Ceia. In my opinion they are easily the best restaurants North of Boston and the best part is that they happen to be across the street from each other. Now, instead of trying to decide on one place or the other, we like to go to one venue for appetizers and the other for dinner, best solution we've ever come up with, ever. I am also a big believer that if you want to be the best restaurant in any area your staff is as important as the food you serve. Not only is the staff at Brine top notch with extensive knowledge of any drink and appetizer/entrée available, they are polite, patient, and extremely helpful. The upbeat and classy yet comfortable atmosphere at Brine truly speaks for itself. Although I can try, the wide variety of mouth-watering food Brine offers is beyond any explanation I can provide, it's truly something that needs to be experienced. Ok let's get into the details: I am not sure that it is possible to go wrong with anything on this menu. I have full confidence asking any of the staff for recommendations as they have always pointed me in the right direction. However, we usually start with Oysters and one or two Crudo options but have also been happy with the mussels and beef tartar as well. For the entrees the Ribeye, Filet, Pork, Scallops and Lobster Newburg are our go-to but it also depends on whatever great special they are offering. We have always been more than satisfied with no matter what we order. As you can tell we highly recommend Brine!

Brine is expensive. But unlike many expensive establishments, I have never felt "ripped off" or disappointed. The staff, atmosphere and food is simple amazing. The pork/clam chowder is so good- and unlike some other reviews I found it nice and chunky, with a few amazing pieces of bacony pork included. After 10 or more visits I have never been anything but satisfied. Yesterday I devoured a dozen perfect oysters and enjoyed a nice craft IPA. It would be nice if there were draft IPAs available, but the bottle selection is great. As with Brine's sister restaurant (Ceia) the wine list is top class. Again, you may spend what you spent on your last Ipod by the time you are done- but you will not regret it!

Just go for oysters and cocktails like someone stated. Their other food was ok. The place is pricy. I don't mind pricy if I feel it's worth it and here it didn't. The oysters were fabulous though. The tap water had some weird particles in it too. Nice service with friendly bartender.

Only came in for lunch but would be back if I lived closer. This is a perfect example of a restaurant where you go if you love gastronomy. Of course we got the oysters and also the chowder and sausage sandwich of the day. It was so good. Came in for lunch on a weekday and was able to sit right away and enjoy at an unrushed pace. Service was friendly too!

I had wanted to try Brine for a long time. That was mistake #1. In short, our experience was horrible and I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who values their hard earned money and wants to leave a restaurant without wondering: "Who do these people think they are?" The price. EVERYTHING on the menu is outrageously priced. Usually I am willing to put up with some inflation for an excellent and exotic meal, but when the menu starts with a $9 bowl of clam and bacon chowder and runs up to a $44 steak, it is a complete and utter ripoff. The portions. My sister ordered the $9 "bowl" of chowder and while it came in an average-sized bowl, the chowder filled HALFWAY up within. You would think for the extra $3 inflation that they'd actually FILL THE FRICKIN' BOWL! They must've been running out and consequently rationing portions. This was the first time we wondered aloud who these people thought they were. I ordered the Prawn, poached egg, and grits "small plate" because it seemed like the only thing that was close to reasonably priced on the menu. Boy, they weren't lying when they called it a "small plate." For $14 I got three Prawns, all slightly larger than jumbo shrimp, over a single poached egg. A tablespoon of grits was smeared on the plate. That was it. For $14. Now I'm no expert on the market price of Prawns nowadays, but with the egg and grits it seemed like about $3 worth of food that I finished in about 90 seconds with my stomach still growling. Criminally small portions. Please sir, can I have some more? The restaurant is small, metallic, and uncomfortable. We were served by the bartender, who was very friendly, but he also had a full bar to tend to and was distracted. This all happened as a seemingly endless flow of waitresses whizzed by our table to serve the other guests in the small dining area. I don't know why we were lucky enough to get the bartender, but we did. Then the coup de grace occurred. The whole time we had witnessed the other waitresses bring out bread to the other guests. It was forgotten on us. See: distracted bartender. After finishing our "meals," we were still ravenous so we asked for some bread and he apologetically obliged. Then, after all the outrageously priced, extremely small food we had eaten, he brings it over. The bread turned out to be the square, run-of-the-mill, cheap dinner rolls that you'd buy at Market Basket for Thanksgiving dinner. After all that. Needless to say, we paid the bill and hurried out of there. As soon as we hit the street, we looked at each other and burst out laughing. It was truly comical how bad it was. Still hungry, we went to the Grog, ordered $7 nachos, and ate our fill at a restaurant that actually gets it. I will say the food was delicious, the little bit I got. But it could've been three times the size, and the "bowl" of chowder was criminally small. I'm sure for the Oyster crowd, this is a pretty good place for them to get what they like. And I know Newburyport now has it's share of yuppies who couldn't care what the price is, as well as tourists who are on vacation and ready to spend. But for everyone else, avoid this place all all costs, it is legal robbery. This is probably the first and last Yelp review I will ever write, but I feel a duty to warn the general public. I am truly amazed it has lasted this long. But hey, there's a fool born every minute, right?

We've eaten everywhere in Newburyport as we are local and this was the best meal we've had in quite a long time. Started with a bunch of Oysters (pemmaquid) that were perfect. Followed up with a different soup, one was a special chilled soup and the other was the Clam and Pork chowder, which was bursting with flavor and fantastic. Main meals were the Arctic Char and a Grouper special. Both were delicious. The grouper was the best seafood dinner I have had in a long time. The fish was perfectly seared and flavored and It was served over some sort of gazpacho sauce with little dumplings...YUM! Good wine and beer list and very good knowledgeable service. Just one negative is that the host "stand" is right in the middle of the doorway and it's a very narrow restaurant to begin with. You had to dodge the stand to get in and out of the restaurant and it's visually very unappealing.

    (5)
  • Kirsten P.

Very disappointing. We came for our second anniversary and overall I was not impressed. The food was over priced. I got the Arctic char. The fennel and gazpacho were really good, the fish was very salt and it the first fish I've had with a lot of fat. The pasta was just unimpressive. My husband had cod which was better but the corn and green beans were from a can and the dish was too sweet. They do have nitro and monk beer which is awesome but very expensive.

I so wish that I lived closer to Newburyport. BRINE makes one understand the difference between eating and dining. Every dish was an unbelievable taste experience. In particular we loved the bluefish crostini and the, and the baby octopus salad. Our server was also exceptionally friendly, and helpful. The ambulance is fun, with nice long tables offering plenty of room for all the delicious food presented so beautifully. Go.

Please take little neck clam off from oyster menu. I am not familiar with oysters name and just order a dozen. Its our fault thhat we ordered but clams shouldnt be on oyster menu. Mentioned to waitress but nothing happened. We paid and didnt eat them. Red curly hair waitress is rude....

Go for dollar oyster night! 100 bill for two having dollar oyster and wine- I'd expect superior service. Their sister restaurant is the same very complex and delicious food served by unskilled wait staff who is uninterested. Tragically hip scene, made me feel like I was in the city. Hope they continue to refine their staff which will make things excellent. A lot middle age yuppies drinking 12 a glass wine and being "cool", it was entertainment if nothing else.

  • Deke D.

Went there recently on a Saturday afternoon for raw bar and cold ones. Updated decor, attentive staff and fresh food. The beer selection was good and they offered several varieties on the half shell. My only issue is that it's very cramped. If you don't like sitting on stools or tend to be a booth person, you'll probably be uncomfortable. With all the places that offer freshly caught seafood in the area, you can most likely find a place that has more accommodating seating and easier parking.

  • Colleen S.

Yummy! It seems like we had a little bit of everything and it was all awesome. The service was very good and informative. We will be back.

  • Lynne L.

Excellent flavors, beautiful atmosphere. Very limited menu. We had the mussels & fries and the oyster po'boy. Delicious. Warning, this is not a place to go for large portions or low fat options. It also is difficult to order meat free, which is why I gave 4 rather than 5 stars. In a seafood restaurant, it is reasonable to expect to be able to adhere to a pescetarian diet, but most dishes have meat. For example, the bean soup had a veal stock and the mussels had chunks of bratwurst.

We were excited to visit this restaurant after reading the positive reviews. Unfortunately, we left with a big hole in our pockets (ouch) and unimpressed by the food. To keep it short and to the point our salads were extremely small while being told they are quite large. The scallops were served basically raw though a nice char on the exterior and the special Carmel soufflé was under cooked and lacked the special sauce that was played up. Would stop in again for some oysters but the rest was overpriced. Value D...overpriced Atmosphere C...if you are charging those prices the least you could do is have a table top that doesn't have bumps on it Presentation B+...best part of the meal Service B+...would have been an A but when we asked the server about the salad portion size we were told that it is large and should be spilt. I wish I took a photo of this shareable salad. It should be described as a nice portion for one. Overall a disappointment for our party of 4

  • Folger A.

I was so disappointed in Brine that I opened a Yelp account to write this review... Service was terrible. I came in with a party of 7 and not only did our waitress forget parts of our order (half a dozen littlenecks) but it also took 2+ hours to get through our meal and we didn't order dessert. I understand that a party of 7 is a challenge but our server spent most of her time "soft talking" to the couple at the table next to us and forgetting what we ordered. Guessing this is her first customer service job. As for the food, Oysters were OK. Overpriced but good quality. The rest of the menu just tries way too hard to be hipster. Portions were too small, way too small. They take the notion of "small plates" a bit too literally and for these prices it's just not acceptable to walk out hungry. Won't be back. Plenty of other choices for good oysters and Brine doesn't have anything beyond that to offer.

The food here is delicious and the best place in town for seafood and raw bar, but on the expensive end. Last time we were in we enjoyed oysters, Sausage de la casa (fantastic!) and bacon & egg. Previous trips we tried the Power Tower which was a great way to get a variety from the raw bar and the Atlantic Salmon (delic!). Atmosphere is cozy but small so a reservation is recommended. Some of the long tables are shared, so be prepared to share a table with another couple on busy nights. Waitstaff/Hostess can be either incredibly friendly and helpful, or cold, borderline unpleasant (or it would be 5 stars). There are some fun specials they run throughout the week, $1 oysters (Buck a Shuck) on Thursdays, and Wine and Brine on Wednesdays- both worth checking out!

We had a sample of oysters and loved the varieties and enjoying the different brininess and texture to them. Then had a sampling of the crudo and they were excellent, the Atlantic Char was delicious as the yogurt mousse. We were there for the food and I would recommend them

We go to Brine multiple times per week, every week. I spend a significant percentage of my income here. And every time it has been excellent. I guess that's why we keep coming back. Do not be fooled by the fact that Brine is in a small town. This is one of the top restaurants in the state and at the same level as top Boston restaurants such as Island Creek Oyster Bar, B&G, and Neptune Oyster. We rarely go anywhere else in the Newburyport area because nothing else is even in the same league.

We stumbled into Brine on a trip on the coast north of Boston. The chef has skillfully brought together many non-traditional flavors to play off each other. I started with a couple of oysters that came with one's choice of several great sauces. The presentation was worthy of a magazine cover. The oysters were fresh and the whole experience of them arriving sparked a bit of celebratory mood. Normally I like raw oysters by themselves, but the sauces nearly upstaged the oysters - definitely order all of them and keep them on your table for later if not for the oysters. I then proceeded to get the Yellow Fin Tuna* * Apple * Pickled Peanuts * Avocado * Cilantro. The chef has chutzpa to try pickled peanuts. The peanuts didn't suit the dish, in my opinion; however, my wife loved that addition. I tried some of my companion's squash soup (pumpkin, I think) that had brown butter and it was stellar with lots of different textures and flavors. I'd jump on any chance to try this restaurant again. They have a very small number of tables so reserve ahead or arrive at an off-time to assure your place at their table. It also seems like a great place to go solo and sit at the bar.

Came in for dinner, ended up only ordering a cocktail, a beer and some oysters. Seating was incredibly uncomfortable. Half of their beer selection was out (over-priced and only bottles) and we weren't informed until we tried to order drinks twice. Oysters came without any kind of sauce despite there being 4 option listed on the menu. Asked for cocktail sauce after receiving the first round of oysters but still wasn't offered anything with the second round of oysters we ordered. In general, way over-priced for what it is. $16 for a 22oz beer? Geeeeeeez. Would consider going back for dinner if it was more reasonably-priced. I'm ok with spending a decent amount of money on dinner but it has to be worth it. Side note: There's one bathroom and for some bizarre reason there's a floor-to-ceiling mirror next to the toilet... holy awkward. I can't believe I'm the only person to mention this! Bummed because I love the sister restaurant, Ceia.

The food was topped only by the service. Both innovative and exquisite all of the items we enjoyed were well worth the visit. The power tower allowed us to sample all of the oysters and the butcher block entree was filling and delicious. Would highly recommend this restaurant for both appetizers and the main courses.

You can tell that everything here was well thought out and executed to perfection. I think that this place deserves a better rating but I think the price may be higher than the fare suggests. I would definitely go again.

We went for lunch and had the most fabulous experience. The fresh oysters made us rethink going to New Orleans. The clam chowder is EXCELLENT! with pork belly, whole clams and thinly sliced fingerling potatoes. OMG!!!! I had a perfect Tuna Crudo and a green and white asparagus salad with lemon and olive olive pudding sauce.. fabulous! All the flavors were done so well, they went together perfectly and yet you can taste all the subtle flavors. My husband had such a good fried oyster Po Boy. I have never seen him EVER eat one so slowly as he was savoring every bite. The portions were perfect. This is QUALITY not QUANTITY! We had a wonderful Spanish Rose suggested by the very helpful and pleasant waitress. This place is a real find and so interesting. They really nailed it and we will definitely be back to try all the other dishes.

Ok. This is the Real Deal. I've been about ten times since I discovered this Gem in Newburyport about a month ago. The first few times I always thought "why has it taken so long for someone to open a Proper Raw Bar in Newburyport?" Well, someone did. On each of my visits I have found on offer no fewer than four and many as 8 varieties of oysters. Each variety was a pristine example of their respective species and all were shucked perfectly, not a broken belly, dry cup or shell shard in sight. Well done. I have also sampled most all of their Crudo and Small plates on their regularly changing menu. On my first visit I was wowed by a halibut crudo with actual shaved black truffle and crushed hazelnuts, just amazing in taste and texture. Another amazing small plate was a Carpaccio of tuna with a lemon sabayon that was so light as to almost be weightless, a great take on a classic. I have had so many more wonderful things at Brine that I wish I had kept my itemized receipts to detail each one. But I can say with some certainty that there wasn't a clunker in the bunch. They do have a full bar with a decent wine list and selection of beers that the bar staff will be more than happy to assist with or offer pairing suggestions. They also have a blossoming cocktail program and if you're lucky enough to have Neil as your bartender chat him up about you're preferences in this area. He's competent and eager to learn from those of us that have been on the Cocktail bandwagon for a while. I have not had any of their land based offerings with the exception of a special app of meaty, thick sliced grilled oyster mushrooms that were locally sourced that afternoon, but from what I saw emerging from this small kitchen looked very good. So if like me you had given up on Newburyport as a dining destination please give Brine a shot, but leave me a bar seat please.

Great wine list, good service and tasty food. A pretty solid experience in total. The hostess was friendly, our waitress was helpful and attentive without being overbearing and service was fast. We started with oysters they were yummy. I then had the clam and pork belly chowder which was delicious. I ended with the salad with goat cheese. My companion had the lamb sausage and enjoyed it as well. My only criticism is that it's very cramped in there, like almost uncomfortably so but otherwise a great experience.

Won't be back. We had a 7:30 reservation and weren't seated until almost 8. Service was EXTREMELY slow. Ordered oysters that were just "fair". Also ordered 2 appetizers and had to remind our waitress 45 minutes later that we still had not been served. Left without ordering dinner. While the appetizers were good I expect far better customer service for the high price. Sorry. I REALLY wanted to enjoy this place.

We moved to Newburyport mostly for the schools and beautiful architecture but Brine made the deal a little sweeter! It really is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. The chef, pastry chef, and servers are passionate about the food and it shows in the product and service. We have taken friends there who've said, "That was one of the best meals I've ever had". We've been here about 8 times and every meal has been consistently great.

Great oyster menu that are properly shucked. Duck and monk fish were beautifully done. Crudo is great because it is basically very fresh sashimi. It can be crowded and busy so make reservations ahead of time, especially in August and September.

Been here 3 times and each time it has been solid. The folks that go here with me feel the same way. The clam chowder is a real treat and is what keeps me coming back.

I love this place. I have been here at least 10 time for both lunch and dinner and I have never been disappointed. The seafood is fresh and innovative. I love the oysters. Brine always changes the oyster menus to serve both local and west coast oysters. For meat lovers, you will not be disappointed. The chef knows how to create masterpieces on a plate that taste as good as they look. One of my favorite is Bacon and Egg. It's fried oysters with bacon and a poached egg. It is a small bite with big flavor. The sausage of the day is always creative and makes a great sandwich for lunch or dinner. This place can be expensive for dinner but you can have a similar experience at lunch. Try this place. You will love it too.

Brine is a new exquisite oyster raw bar specialty restaurant in the heart of Newburyport. Absolutely love the menu steaks and chops along with seafood. The service is fantastic friendly bar tender. Oysters shucked right at the bar in front of you. Came in just for some oysters and wine. Fabulous oyster selection great quality. With the oysters came a traditional horse radish cocktail sauce along with a sweet vinegar sauce and a rocking habiñero spicey sauce. Loved the spicey sauce on the oysters, complemented them very well. Wine selection was very good. And great cocktail menu as well. I will return to this fabulous establishment many times in the future, I highly suggest you do the same.

I had a feeling upon arriving I was not going to be a fan of this place.. Very crowded to crowded to even walk around the servers stumble over bar stools to get to the kitchen. We had a 830 reservation and were not sat until 9 pm. Not sure what the reservation was for. It took roughly 20 minutes to get a drink at the bAr . The worst part was the bartender did not even acknowledge us! It was not til after 10 pm that we finally received our food. Everyone seemed to enjoy the soup I personally can't say either way. I'm not a seafood person so that's why it gets 3 rather than 2 stars. That and the server was great. Everyone that ordered seafood in my group seemed to enjoy it however those of us that ordered steaks ie filet / ribeyes were disappointed they lacked flavor and were dry. I do not reccomend a weekend night here even with a reservation!

Lovely atmosphere inside, we were a party of three and all of us loved our dishes as well - and a nice wine list! The service was a nice balance of there when you needed them, but not intrusive. It's a little pricey but a great place for a nice night out.

  • Nicholas J.

Good beer! However the cost of the oysters is pretty pricy at $2.75 a piece. We even had one oyster that was a size of dime - no joke! We let our waitress, Alana, know and she refused to exchange it for one that was more representative of the description within the menu. Given you're charging $2.75 a piece, it's a pretty modest request. Thus, I would say they is room for improvement for customer service. Look elsewhere if you're looking for a bite to eat in Newburyport!

Came for lunch with the husband and had a great time! We shared a dozen oysters (two from each region on their menu), salmon crudo, fluke crudo, and octopus. The oysters were fresh and delicious and all the other food was amazing too. I thought the fluke crudo lacked a little flavor and was definitely my least favorite of the items we ordered, but still pretty good. If I'm in the area again, I'll definitely be back!

Brine seems to think it's a big fish, but the pond is pretty small in Newburyport. Prices are relatively high for battered cod that was served raw, with a side of soggy fries. Maybe the shellfish is the thing to order here, but I wouldn't come rushing back. A few stars for attentive and friendly service; our waiter addressed the undercooking problem immediately. However, the kitchen's solution of putting the fish under the broiler for 5 minutes only made a mediocre lunch worse. $45 for 2 lousy fish and chips with soda? Ripoff

Last Sunday my fiancée and I came here for lunch. The food was delicious. I had the cod sandwich and the cod was cooked to perfection, light crispy and flavorful!! I had a glass of Riesling and it was great! My Fiencee had the lobster BLT, which he said was also yummy. The hostess sat us at a cute corner table and was very attentive. The food was priced right but the menu was limited, I wish there were more option !!! I figured lunch menus can be light so I asked to see the dinner menu and it too seemed light, just not enough choices. But, they get 5 stars for amazing food at a decent price!! I will be going back!!

I see the great reviews here but have to see I was extremely disappointed with this restaurant and here are some bullet points from someone who used to work in the restaurant business: * A bunch of your special drinks are based on Prosecco. We ordered the raw bar special (the Power Tower) and some kind of bubbly by itself is a good match for a raw bar meal. If it looks like you're going to run out of Prosecco, send someone Learys to buy some more or give customers a make good price on Champagne as substitute. Don't take the lazy approach and say "sorry, pick something else." * The Power Tower as described by the wait staff includes oysters, squid, shrimp, and crab. It was bad enough that you were out of the crab. But to deliver half the order to us and THEN tell us you were also out of the squid as well and offering some substitute oysters or shrimp is about the lousiest version of customer service I can think of. At the very least, you should have offered to take the first half of the order back and allow us to order something different. If all we wanted was oysters and shrimp, we could have gone to 10 Center, the Grog, David's, or the Plum Island Grille. We came there for the raw bar. *Try sitting in your own bar stools for a long meal at the bar. These bar stools are so uncomfortable, they literally say, hurry up with your meal and get out (we could hardly wait to). *The straw the broke the camels back was the stingy amount of wine that you consider to be a full glass. Pictured on my Facebook, this $11 glass of the Morgan Sauvignon Blanc didn't even reach the hip of the red wine goblet (how about a white wine glass folks?). By most accounts, there are 4 glasses to a bottle of wine.. approximately 6.3 oz per glass (25.3 oz per bottle of wine). The wait staff said your official pour for a glass is 5.2 oz. First, that's just a cheap pour. Second, this didn't look like 5.2 oz to me.. my sense is that the bartender erred low (he added a splash when I complained), and third, at 5.2 oz per glass, you can't squeeze an even number of glasses out of a bottle of wine anyway. I'm guessing it was more like 5 oz which would get you a pretty even 5 glasses per bottle. Stingy either way. When you gyp customers on a expensive meal ($104 after tip for two people), they will take their business elsewhere which is what we'll doing. My wife and I eat out almost every weekend in Newburyport. We've experienced all of the restaurants including Brine's sister Ceia (across the street). So, we have some pretty good comparison points to work from.

I can't wait to go back. I was in Newburyport to meet a friend for lunch. Didn't have a specific place in mind and decided to check out this spot. So happy we did! It's a foodies dream in a picturesque New England town. You won't be disappointed.

This would be one of the best restaurants in Boston if it were in Boston. Hands down the best chowder I've ever had! The chowder had a giant piece of pork in the middle of the bowl. nice touch. Great oysters and the house cured sausage was awesome.

I went here for a late lunch, I would honestly say it was the most sensual lunch I have ever had. The Prime beef cruda is a foodgasm on a plate. The oysters with the smoked tomato are delicious also. We finished with the choclate 3ways and a glass of port. Oh my god! Soooo worth it!

They work as a team to give a great experience...informative, friendly, not pushy. For dessert we had chocolate four ways... I will definitely return.... everyone needs to check this place out you will not be dissapointed.5stars...

Seriously the best meal we have had in years! We travel internationally, love food and this is it. Can't wait to go back! From the service - excellent to the atmosphere - never rushed, not quiet but not too loud and the food - what can I say about the food. Perfection would be an understatement. I really am confused by the negative write ups for this restaurant. They have got the "it" factor. Perfect in every way. Looking to impress or just have a great dinner - go.

Brine has wonderful food and a cool modern but cosy atmosphere. My parents always want to eat here when they come to visit, and we've had great food every time. Their bacon and egg small plate is delicious, and their Kale Caesar actually made me enjoy kale. Their mixed drinks are always adventurous and delicious. The service is great, and the manager is really nice. Some of the portion sizes are small, yes, but the food is always rich so I never feel like it wasn't enough. I'm happy to see this place doing well.

Very gourmet type food. Oysters were fresh and tasty. I would prefer a draft beer when I eat oysters but there selection of bottled was very good. Had a Racer 5. Also had clam chowder. Three whole clams in there and my wife's lobster bisque came with croquets filled with lobster meat. Fresh mushroom and goat cheese panini to finish it all off. It i pricey so expect to pay for it. The other reviews about the bar stools are right a little bit small for an afternoon of drinking and eating. Service was good

Absolutely fantastic! The freshest seafood with an exquisite array of small plates. The raw tuna dish transported me to a Saturday afternoon at LeBernardin's in New York City! The raw oyster bar had an amazing selection with delicious homemade sauces on the side. The atmosphere is is warm, cozy, romantic and extremely friendly. The head bartender is great, she can explain the extensive wine list in detail and make you a fabulous martini that will put a smile on your face. I would be remiss without mentioning the delicious selection of homemade desserts. I split a lemon cake with my husband and we were fighting over the crumbs on the plate. The Caswell Group seems to be hitting home runs with Ceia and now Brine! Finally great, fresh well throughout dishes in Newburyport.

Another overpriced, pretentious Newburyport restaurant. This place is o.k. Certainly nothing to really over complain about, except that, for what you actually get, it's just overpriced. Don't get me wrong: I will pay for good quality, nice ambiance, a good overall experience. But this isn't it. It touts itself as a Euro-styled restaurant, but there are some key, key differences, believe me. Also, what's with the patronizing staff, as if they are almost doing you a favor by serving you? Ahem ... this is the hospitality industry, folks. And I'm the paying customer. So let's drop the attitude, shall we?

Brine Whine. Sat at bar on most uncomfortable stools ever. Bartender was an absolute delight. Ordered smoked clam and pork chowder to start. Came in what at first appeared to be decent sized bowl but way at the bottom was a little indentation that held what seemed to be less than a cup of chowder. Asked for two spoons to split. Got a good laugh at that. Shared six oysters on the half shell next. Had two glasses of white and a 22 ounce beer. $75 with tip. Since we were hungry decided to bolt and grab a pizza across the street at Anchor.

If I could give this zero stars I would. Two dozen oysters yielded two dozen pieces of shell. Aside from the shells, another turnoff was the fact that half of them were dry and smelled weird. My hake dish was tepid and undercooked (I understand juicy fish, not overcooked- they erred on the side of raw). The mussel dish was just off putting (and tiny). The service was rude and snooty. Not a fan.

Stopped in for a late lunch this past week and had a fantastic experience. The soup and salad were very tasty and made w fresh ingredients. The oysters were delicious and the service and atmosphere were very good. Only reason for 4/5 is that this was solo lunch - I want to head back soon for dinner w friends so I can give a 5/5.

I intend this to be a critique, hoping that it will serve to improve this companies product, rather than a knee jerk rant. First impression was a very wobbly table..which needs attention. Our server was prompt and helpful wih our choices and brought us our first choice of wine a bollte of Napa Cab which was $50. The Tuna appetizer was very good, grilled well and presented well. This was my wifes birthday dinner so, we were hoping for something special. Both she and one of our dining partners ordered the Monkfish. Although the portions were quite small, the content and presentation was right on. Our other dining partner ordered the scallops (4 large sea variety) which also were very good albeit lonely on a limited vegetable bed. Presentation was very well done all around. Then came my meal, the Squab special. There was 2 wing portions with very little meat and a small piece of steak that accompanied it. I felt it was insulting for a $27 dish. Then the real faux pas came when we asked for another bottle of wine, the server asked if we wanted the same and we asked what she suggested. Partly our fault for not asking the price, but shame on her for not letting us know she had suggested and served us a $145 bottle of wine unbeknownst to us. When the bill came, she claimed she had told us, but that was not the case. We won't be back.

This review is for a brunch visit on February 17, 2013. My two sons-in-law had a terrific meal there in what I believe were early weeks of its being open. We had two types of oysters, a tuna crudo, a soup (warm, not hot), an egg and fried oyster dish, several craft beers, and maybe one other small plate. The quality of the food was excellent and the service as expected, though the tab was huge - about $175 for the three of us. We would definitely return for the raw bar but order with greater restraint!

Overall the experience was good. I would have given 5 stars if we would have stopped before ordering dessert. We waited over 30 minutes to get our 2 desserts, at one point we asked about the desserts and she said they were waiting for the pudding. Not quite sure how that could have been possible, as the dessert that had the pudding was frozen so solid it was hard to eat. If you forgot to put the dessert order in, fine...just tell us. If the kitchen is running slow, fine...just tell us, but just sitting there for over 30 minutes was ridiculous.

First of all, the food is superb, with wonderful ingredients and imaginative combinations of flavors. However I doubt I'll go back. For the price I would have expected better than the complete Amateur Hour that passed for service. They lost our reservation, and while waiting at the bar we were ignored for quite a while as the bartender fawned over the couple who'd just ordered a very expensive appetizer. During dinner we had to ask for water refills; the server never checked or offered to refill. And at the point where we should have received our main course, the server came over to say that one of the entrees was off the menu for the evening. While we tried to decide on a substitute, he returned to say that the entree was back on. But the biggest problem was that the acoustics were horrible - brick walls and other hard surfaces in the cramped, narrow space of the restaurant meant that everyone's dinner conversations were reflected at what felt like rock concert volumes. And as other people have commented, the seating is hard metal and very uncomfortable. I hope the chefs are able to find a better place to use their considerable talents.

  • Tom C.

Just go for oysters and cocktails like someone stated. Their other food was ok. The place is pricy. I don't mind pricy if I feel it's worth it and here it didn't. The oysters were fabulous though. The tap water had some weird particles in it too. Nice service with friendly bartender.

    (5)
  • Frank T.

We had a sample of oysters and loved the varieties and enjoying the different brininess and texture to them. Then had a sampling of the crudo and they were excellent, the Atlantic Char was delicious as the yogurt mousse. We were there for the food and I would recommend them

I had two amazing drinks our server kendra suggested with st germain. My boyfriend and u ordered the lobster bisque with croquettes amazing....as well as the tuna tartare and sirloin with parsnips cooked to perfection... the music was perfect the service was exemplary not just from kendra but as well as the hostess, bartenders and other servers!!!!

  • Nicole H.

My favorite upscale restaurant in Newburyport - inspired menu, perfect execution, friendly and helpful staff, and delicious drinks. You'll find super fresh seafood in this minimalist decor restaurant. Everything we tried was outstanding - from the chowder and oyster starters to the French-press coffee and perfect desserts. This place is expensive but completely worth it. Don't be afraid to try new things on the menu - if it sounds a little scary, order it.

Superb. Smoked Hamachi Crudo, Five Grain Salad, Pork & Clam Chowder, and, of course, oysters of the day to start.

Do it.

Had a great time here. We had a wonderful table outside on a beautiful day, ordered a lot of oysters, clams, and the other things ordered ... everything was delicious... restaurant had some great variety and we had great service. We would return.

Great soup! Five Grain salad delicious. Clam and pork chowder devoured by my husband. Sat outside on a warm summer evening. Perfect!

AWWW SHUCKS!, Seriously, AWWW SHUCKS! Pricey. Small. Clean. Trendy. VERY VERY Clean! GREAT Crudo. Great Service. NO SHELLS in our perfect oysters. Sinful clams on the half shell. Bubbles. Need not say more....

Best cocktails around!! Their Up Beet martini is to die for. Service is good, atmosphere is lively and the menu is unusual and interesting with something for everyone.
