A special dining location for a special occasion - 29 Fair Street is not your everyday neighborhood bistro. 29 Fair Street is the oldest restaurant on Nantucket - and from my experiences - it is one of the best. The location is close to town yet feels like a secret enclave of cuisine. The candlelit elegance and refined menu is befitting of momentous events - anniversaries, birthdays, and engagements. The decor is almost rustic by modern Nantucket standards with exposed beam ceilings and smaller, separate dining rooms as opposed to a cavernous, stripped down floor plan. The charm of a more personal, New England setting compliments the creative, yet familiar French cuisine. My husband and I ate here while in Nantucket celebrating our first anniversary. It was a pricey (as nearly everything on Nantucket is) but memorable meal. The starters were delicious. I had the Alaskan king salmon gravlax and he enjoyed the foie gras on artisinal bread (which had a fantastic smoky flavor set off by merlot and cranberries in the demi glace). I enjoyed the roasted lobster tail, which was small but sweet and wrapped in angel hair fillo dough. The presentation was the best perhaps of any meal I have had (see photos). My husband's braised veal shank was my favorite item of the night though. I did not order it as veal shank usually arrives on the bone,m which I do not like to grapple with. This veal arrived in a bowl, almost like a stew. Tender morsels of veal were perfect with morel mushrooms and carrots. Try the Nantucket Vineyards wine that is served here - it is of great quality and a good value - especially in comparison to the remainder of the extensive but expensive wine list. Dessert is a must, 29 Fair has a particularly delicious array of home-made treats such as maple creme brulee and chocolate mousse. I chose to enjoy a mixed berry and grand marnier saybayon. Thanks to Ara of Ara's Tours who recommended the location and also made our reservations for us. Thanks to her we were personally greeted by the charming chef. We were grateful to have found such a delightful place to cap off our anniversary weekend.

Anyone that knows anything about French cuisine knows that it's labor intensive, rich to the pallet, and a joy to eat when done right. There's no doubt about the fact that 29 Fair knows the essentials of the cuisine. If anything they go a little overboard with the richness to the point of being nearly overbearing. But again, no complaints with the cuisine. I draw the line with restaurant experience. Yes we pay through the nose for the food, the presentation and the ambiance, but uncomfortable creaky chairs and the dimmest lighting on the island do not make for a romantic or pleasant dining experience. Neither does old fashioned and highly inexcusable bad service. We were greeted by our waiter who seated us in the front area of the dining room. Nothing wrong with that per se as it was relatively empty. Then in walked a loud chatty group who were seated right next to our table. A curious fact since there seemed to be plenty of room throughout the restaurant. And though this party was loud and somewhat obnoxious, it certainly was trivial compared to being virtually ignored by the waiter for most of the evening. The busboy was far more attentive. Even with a chance to sell a second bottle of wine for the table you think you'd see a little more chop-chop "Right away sir or madame"....but that was not the case. Still I could have walked away relatively happy if the miscues of the evening stopped there. But no. The coup-de-gras came during the dessert course, when the waiter was describing a Moscato on their menu... puckering his mouth to get the faux-Italian just right when sounding out the words with theatrical perfection. "Where's the wine from? " I asked. The waiter responded, "Italia." Which part I probed further. "Sicily" was the reply....followed up confidently with "I'm pretty sure." I'd asked him what the wine was called, "Men-do-chino" he responded, artfully sounding out every syllable in perfect "air-guitar Italian." Inspection of the label listed the address of the Oakville Grocery in Napa, CA as the distributor. HA! I turned to my friend, with "Men-do-chino" still hanging like smoke rings blown from his mouth, "It's Mendocino. It's in Northern California. See it says so here on the label." What was clearly a DOH moment for the young lad...probably the first of many... was underscored by his hasty exit to speedily procure glasses of what turned out to be domestic Moscato. In short 29 fair has good tasting food accompanied by lackluster service depending upon which wait person you get. Bad service can ruin the food altogether. A better choice for fine dining is Oran Mor, the best restaurant on the island (if not the US) in terms of both top-notch service and remarkable cuisine. Though they may not have "Men-do-Chino" on their dessert wine list.

Tried this place with my wife for dinner. Loved the ambience. Very romantic. Service is friendly and sometimes too attentive. My wife took the salmon dish which she said was very delicious given that nantucket is known for its seafood. The chicken dish I took was horrible which could have been due to the fact that dish was altered to take the bacon out. If you got one day in nantucket I would try some other place.

Just had an amazing dinner at 29 Fair in Nantucket, MA. The restaurant was beautiful. Very charming. The staff was friendly and very warm. Overall it was a homely feeling. For the first coarse I ordered the wild mushroom tart. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly in a light and fluffy puff pastry with drizzles of the best balsamic reduction I've ever tasted (other than mine lol). I didn't order the second coarse but I guess it was the chefs recommendation. It was a pumpkin soup poured over toasted hazelnuts and a mascarpone quenelle. The pumpkin soup was very light with the perfect touch of seasoning and the marscapone added the creaminess to the pumpkin soup without the heaviness. For my entree I got the seared Codfish over a potatoe cauliflower purée. The fish was perfect and light and the purée was silky. Lastly for dessert I got the chocolate diversion. This came with chocolate mousse , ganache and white chocolate truffle. This dessert is a chocolate lovers dream. If I had one critique about the dessert it would be that it needs a crunch factor. Overall my experience here was superb. The chef was very interactive and showed his presence with the presentation of the dishes. I would definitely dine here again.

Okay. The food is good, but way over priced for the quality and quantity. The waiter was not very good and rushed us through the entire meal. We read many reviews on this place, expecting a wonderful experience, but a "wonderful experience" did not occur. There are too many other great places on the island to eat and for a lot less.

29 Fair is under new management this year and is a must try during your visit to Nantucket. From our starters of the scallops and soup to our entrees of the halibut and salmon we have nothing but rave reviews. The creme brulee we had for dessert is the best we have ever tasted! I would highly recommend you give them a try. You will not be disappointed!!

Very good! I'm the pickiest eater on the earth and had to go over pretty much every restaurant on Nantucket until I found a place that sounded nice and had a menu I could order from. Even though the food menu listed on trip advisor was completely different (check their website for the actual menu!) it didn't matter.. Because it was SUCH a tasty meal! We ordered the boneless spareribs and the pasta Bolagnese (which was a special). Both wonderful. I don't even eat veal! Didn't matter. Delicious. The waiter was great and the building was old and candlelit (real candles!!) and a perfect experience. Really wish we had room for dessert!

A very special restaurant housed in a 1700's era building. This was one of the more unique and memorable dining experiences we've had. If you are a romantic and a foodie, you will be so happy with the food and the wine. The wait staff and management could not have been more friendly and attentive. The chef visited diners at their tables and even showed us around the restaurant to talk about the history as we were the last table at the end of the evening. Don't miss this one!
