A belated week-later after dining Review here. Went for a late breakfast/early lunch and wanting just a little bit of both, They had a special on the menu, the "Gronk Spike" which fit both perfectly! Three eggs, two kielbasa, some steak tips, homefries and toast! A friend dining with me got the meat lovers omelette...also cleverly named but i forget what it was. Coy cute retro menu and interiors. Very good snappy counter wait times. Place was practically full with barely a table free, a good sign of a good dine! I think grillmasters name was Phil? if I Recall... He held down his ship and did well under some order pressure and still got myself and my friend our food in timely fashion even if we were practically drooling on him while he was doing so! Spectacular reasonable prices... generous refill policy in effect! Don't miss this place, but dont dawdle either... They evidently run it like it is in the 50's.. up to the closed before early-afternoon time! (2/3pm approximately)

This was a very decent breakfast spot in an area that desperately needs more breakfast options--menu was cute and on theme (I especially liked the dishes named after classic cars) and service was fast & friendly. Food was good and menu contained a lot of options. Get the corned beef! It's made in house and super tasty. Only downside is that I wish the portions were slightly larger, especially given the price tag. C'mon! People basically ate in buckets in the 50s!

  • Hanlon M.

Great place for breakfast diner food. All the classic breakfast items (eggs, bacon, pancakes, French toast, etc) that taste great with fun 50's era names. And at affordable diner prices. I went with my girlfriend and we both ate well for $30 after tip. You seat yourself on a bar stool or any one of the two and four top tables. Menus are already on the table and they take your drink order right away. Food order soon after. Great fast service and endless coffee for $1.99.

  • Aimée B.

Absolutely fantastic. The staff was friendly and attentive, the service was efficient, and the food was reasonably priced and delicious. The eggs were perfectly cooked and the corned beef hash beat the pants off anything I ever found in Southie. I really cannot exaggerate just how fantastic that hash was. Add that to the fun, punny menu items (a Deflated Breakfast from the Patriots-themed listings is exactly half of a Ted Williams/Grand Slam) and you've got a real winner.

  • Jay K.

Oh yes. Yes yes yes. The food is delicious and the prices are good. But also very important to me? The service was fantastic. Lots of smiles and genuine kindness. The parking lot next to the building is a bit small, but I think there is more across the street. The decor is great. It's not over the top, just enough photos and of course the menu items with their cute names. There is a nice bar to sit at and a good number of tables, but I can see how it might get crowded on the weekend. I was there on a weekday morning and it wasn't too crowded, just busy enough. The only thing I think I could have asked for was some great 60s tunes playing softly in the background to round out the whole experience. I got the Gronk Spike and it hit the spot for breakfast, and I even had enough left over for a good portion for lunch too. I will definitely be back.

Solid local diner. Cool names added to their dishes which I always like. The Gronk, The Ted Williams. But not just sports. Tv, music and pop culture from the 50's hence the name of the place. Really cool concept... Great corn beef hash. Puts them in competition with Renee's in Somerville. Both yum in their own way but I have to give it to DWD. More beef less potato and grilled well done. Awesome! Also my waitress is from Somerville. Small world? I think not WE VILLENS ARE EVERYWERE!!! I will be back to Doo Wop next time I'm feeling nostalgic and HUNGRY...

  • Chris F.

Decent breakfast food, but the waitresses are rude. There are about 5 on for what might be 20 tables and they seem crazed and cranky. Get it together ladies. Not a place to enjoy the atmosphere which is a shame as it's a nostalgic diner meant to create a more enjoyable environment. Take out only, although when I tried, I called 4 times and they couldn't seem to hear me. I was forced to sit here and wait, i.e. be ignored in person. I hope they cheer up! It's breakfast food!!

  • Larissa W.

My friends/coworkers come here every Sunday for breakfast. Now, the last time I was here, I had to be at least 6 or 7 years old. Now, I am 26 and coming back for the second Sunday in a row for some delicious breakfast food! They are know for a lot but my favorite meal to get here are the Chocolate Chip pancakes with the Larry special home fries. What is the Larry Special Home Fry?? It is cubed potatoes topped with onions, cheese and bacon. Now, I get it without the bacon because I do not eat meat, but my coworker gets them with bacon and raves about it! Oh, do not worry, I am raving about them too!!!

  • Holly B.

3 stars being nice... They cater to regulars more so than to everyone else. The food was ok... Nothing special at all. I had "the breakfast" which comes with 1 of everything and one friend had the western omelet and the other had home fries, French toast and eggs over easy. We all agreed it was basic. Atmosphere, loud but basic diner setting. Table was dirty and the waitress held our credit cards because she forgot she had them in her pocket for 20 minutes....

Hidden gem in Malden! I found this place via Yelp (thanks Yelp!) and in grand "Yelp" fashion the reviewers were right. Great spot for brunch. The Irish Benedict is fantastic every time. Just the right size portions with coffee = dynamite! You gotta check them out!

Breakfast done right! The place to go when you don't want somebody to yuppie all over your plate. Eat old school!

  • Fiona H.

Love their food since breakfast is my favorite meal. and I love how they put butter separately on my pancakes. You can't go wrong here at all! Quick service, extremely good food and prices! Will be back often!!

  • Cate N.

Feels like home. Walking into this diner makes you feel like you took a step into the past. so cheap, and so delicious. Everyone is so friendly, from the staff to the fellow customers that seem to call this place a second home as well. Anyone would feel at home stepping foot in here

  • Dulari J.

Good food!!! Waitress was in a mood and very rude! She handed over our bill not even half way done with our food and kept coming to look for money! Very rude lady but the food is amazing!

    (5)
  • Judith S.

This place is a solid 4 stars, because I save 5 stars for things that are extra special. But I really like going here. It's a nice stop after the gym (Malden YMCA) on a day off for a warm comfy meal. I love the Greek omelette. Coffee is always fresh and offered generously. Comfortable tables and chairs, friendly staff, and an easy going atmosphere make this a place I come back to. They also have dedicated parking on the side of the building. I also love that it is right on the bike path. If they added some outdoor seating and a bike rack, I might go up to five stars.

  • Michelle L.

Awesome breakfast and wonderful wait staff. Sam kept the coffee flowing with a smile and the eggs were perfect! And I am pretty picky about my eggs!

Created this account just to write this review. Here we go.... I recently moved to Malden and I was in the mood for some breakfast. Like everyone does, I googled "breakfast places near me" This place showed up. Reading the reviews, I was sold. Parking was great but that's where the positives end! I walked in with 3 of my sisters and the place was packed so I can understand why no employee greeted us or even acknowledged us..... Even though there were 4-5 waitresses/servers but only about 2 of them were walking food to the tables. We stood next to the door for about 10 minutes and it's like we were invisible! A little after 10 minutes of waiting, seemed like 1 out of the 5 drug addict employees was making her way to us but again, it was like we were invisible! The last draw was when one of these druggies literally walked past us without saying anything just so she can burn up her lungs! It's sad I couldn't rate this place based off the food but if the place is full of employees who can look after themselves and acknowledge the customers who pay their bills, I doubt the food would be any different them. Treat this place like they treat their customers.... Invisible!

Cute little dinner. Decorated to look old fashioned which is awesome! The food here is so good, the customer service is amazing. Ate here a few times and loved every visit! New to the area? I suggest you eat here for breakfast one morning, you will love it! The prices are really great!

  • Colin B.

Watery eggs, soggy bacon, low quality service. I had high hopes for this place and I even went twice to give it a second chance, but stay away!

  • Jim C.

They make their own hash and it is fantastic! Pleasant waitress & a bottomless cup of coffee. Great!

    (4)
  • Steve J.

Had the Irish Benny this morning. It was very good to see home made hash which is something I would normally ask about before I ordered it. I for some reason did not this time. The service was very fast and the food was very good. I would recommend this to you if your in the area I would it's worth the stop in. Great prices as well.

Having grown up in Malden, I may be biased, but this is my FAVORITE diner. The people who work there have all been there for years and are very friendly. The atmosphere is very laid back with a seat yourself policy and 1950s memorabilia all over the walls. I always see a huge mix of people, families to young couples to everything in between. You can sit at tables or at the counter (if you like to keep an eye on the front griddle, not always going, but it's fun to watch!) the food is all named for music and people from the 50s- my bf enjoys the John Wayne- steak tips and eggs- for example. Omelettes are delicious, home fries are excellent, coffee is good and plentiful- prices are very affordable. What's not to love!!

    (5)
  • Cow-e D.

Great atmosphere, great food, great prices. I love breakfast diners, and this place knocks it out of the park. The waitresses are extremely chatty and I think it really adds to the 50's diner vibe. The food is delicious and came out super quick. I sat at the counter top and enjoyed the mood. Will definitely be back any time I'm in the area for some breakfast.

A great breakfast place. I had breakfast with a friend this morning, and it was full. The menu is quite creative and varied, and their coffee is excellent. A lot of diners and high-volume restaurants' coffee is nothing more than meh, but not here. The food is also really good too, and prepared exactly the way you want it. Both my friend and I ordered eggs: his over medium and mine over easy. They we're prepared perfectly and everything was delicious. The service was great where they were attentive, but not obnoxious. Our coffee cups were never in want of coffee, as we were attended to by our waitress as well as the bus boy. A very friendly atmosphere prevailed. I would make a special trip to go there, as it's a very good spot for breakfast.

I've been to Doo Wop plenty of times and I love it. Great breakfast, nothing fancy & they have reasonable prices.

  • John D.

A great way to have a small breakfast if you're craving some bacon, eggs, and some toast. Their selection of breakfast foods is not like Ihop but is still great and at an average price, their food will fill you up. The coffee is made fresh along with practically everything else. During weekend mornings, this place will get packed and it will be well worth the wait. The restaurant is small itself and may not accompany groups larger than 4.

    (4)
  • Michael K.

One of my favorite place to hang out with locals. I usually ordered Twist & Shout omelette and I asked for Egg Beater version. My coffee is always full with refills. I would gesture them that I had enough coffee. I'm glad to have a diner close by.

    (5)
  • Jessie L.

Good coffee-shop/diner quality coffee. Omelette with cheddar, broccoli and mushrooms was, well, meh. It didn't have much flavor and the vegetables were not fresh. Not like I'd expect this place to have that but to me it's not worth it. Home fries very good, Italian bread toast good, one pancake on the side was fantastic. (Yes, I had a big breakfast. I needed a pancake. And they would not sub out the home fries and toast for a pancake or french toast.) Nice attentive staff. That all came to a total of 10.76 plus tip. It's not terrible but personally I'd rather spend an extra dollar or two somewhere else for a better breakfast. The verdict is I would go there for a sweet treat breakfast, french toast or pancakes with maybe some meat on the side. Would not get anything related to eggs again.

First time eating here. It's a small place and it was very busy, but to our surprise the food came out quickly. We both got the Ted Williams with French toast and it was delicious! The staff were quick, friendly and seem to keep their cool in the midst of stressful breakfast rush. Parking is a little tough, they have parking lot but because it was so full it was hard to find a spot. Overall it was a good experience and we will be back.

I've been going to the Doo Wop for over 10 years. It used to be my favorite place to get breakfast when me & my friends would skip class in high school. The food is delicious! French toast, eggs, Larry's special home fries, and OMG the corn beef hash is out of this world. Everything is cooked perfectly, and the staff are so friendly. My favorite thing about Doo Wop is how intimate it is. Even if you have to wait a couple minutes for a table, it's worth it. I've never waited longer than 15 minutes for a table. Definitely give this place a try soon, you won't be sorry!

    (5)
  • Adriana T.

Not my place. The portion was very big but it wasn't very tasty. The service was good and the diner was pact but I wouldn't go back there for brunch/breakfast

    (2)
  • Laura H.

Great breakfast place. The food is delicious and the portions are huge. The service is consistently top-notch: very friendly, attentive and fast. (Your coffee cup is never empty for more than a minute!) The French toast is especially good. It does get crowded (it's small and popular) but I've never had to wait more than a few minutes and it's totally worth that.

    (5)
  • Karlie H.

It's small and usually packed, especially Sunday mornings but the food is good, the portions are large and it's cheap. Typical diner fare at diner prices with a nostalgic 50s twist.

went in on a Sunday morning about 9 am and were surprised and pleased to find no line and several open tables. Now we know why... Walked in. And No one greeted us. Not a big deal. We stood there and when no one came over,we just asked about seating and were told to sit any where. The server watched us sit down at a table right by the counter and kitchen entranc area. That was the last time we had anything resembling service :( We sat there, read the menu, had It closed for quite some time, talked, stared at our empty coffe cups. Waited and waited. Finally a server seemed to be walking towards us instead of just by us as had been happening repeatedly, but no. She strolled by and sat at a counter stool, backwards facing towards the table area, and just began talking to one of the regular customers. At this point, we left. Went down the street to Carols Cafe. Small, friendly welcoming atmosphere, very "local", great service, good food and cheap. Go there instead.

I've never been to Doo Wop Diner even though I've lived less than a mile from there my entire life. On a whim, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast. The omelette I ordered was absolutely delicious and gigantic, the way an omelette should be. I enjoyed that I could have a divey breakfast that was fulfilling and not greasy beyond measure. Also exceptional, was the wait staff. I've become accustomed to the typical, cold old lady who throws my breakfast at me, and the two waitresses were absolutely phenomenal. Fast service, great portions, local dive, yummy food. What more can you ask for in a local breakfast joint?! I will be returning to Doo Wop Diner...

Not bad for going back in time! Greasy breakfast makes for good digestion right ? LOL Great hash and home fries and coffee. Quick , grab me my cholesterol medicine hehee

I really like this place. I come in on off days or very early on weekends. Standard diner fair and friendly service. Great place to grab breakfast with my boyfriend on our way into work for the morning. Decent coffee, good service and decent food. Can you really ask for more from your friendly neighborhood diner?

  • Traci K.

I wanted Doo Wop to be amazing. I wanted it to be all encompassingly delicious and awesome. It's super close to my house and sometimes I want to just walk to get breakfast. But... It was ok. Nothing spectacular. I was looking forward to the homefries since they've been getting some rave reviews - but they were bland and tasted as if they'd been sitting on the flat top for ages. The portions are fairly large and the prices are cheap - but for greasy breakfast in the area I'll drive down the road to Dempsey's.

  • Michelle C.

First we walked in today and nobody greeted us nor told us to just sit down anywhere. Then we sat down at the only open table which was still filthy from the previous customers. The wait staff clearly seen us come in & walked by several times and didnt service us. We then got so frustrated being ignored for 15 minutes that we just walked up to the counter and grabbed menu's over the counter. Really??!!! The food came out fast but it wasnt good, there was even a hair where our half & half creamers were in. Gross! never coming here again, service was AWFUL!!!!! STAY AWAY!!

We were looking for a local breakfast place when friends came to visit. Great service, inexpensive and delicious. The waitress was polite and accommodating. The food came fast and was delicious. We arrived around 10am on a Saturday which seemed to be right before there was a wait to be seated. I'd return here without hesitation

This is a breakfast place. I had the Angus Beek Steak Tips, 3 Eggs over hard, and Raisin Toast. I ordered the Steak Tips Medium Well, they indeed came medium well. Everything came as ordered. Good Breakfast. I'll come here again. Kim.

There are not a ton of diner options right in the center of Malden, but the Doo Wop hits the spot. They're pretty no frills, but you're not likely to leave the place hungry. I'm a big fan of their french toast. Expect a line on the weekends, but if you hit up quality diners, you already know this!

Extremely fast service, friendly staff, good food and low prices. All I could ask for in a diner. The corned beef hash is fresh and fantastic.

My guideline on the Stars. 5star = awesome 4 star good foods, regardless the (okay) service.. 3star, okay foods, decent service 2star, decent foods, decent service 1 star, no foods, no service. Yesterday i was there by myself around 9:25am. I walked in and seated in the front bar next to their register. I went thru the menu for 2mins. Then i put the menu down and waiting to get service. The lady in there didn't serve me or ask me what i want to drink. Okay then i wait... like 8mins.. and watched them serve thru other customers. Okay then finally a dude server ask me to give him a min.. Okay FINE! Then i waited for 2mins. This dude was still taking care of someone's checks. Okay man i on rush too. I look at my watch 9:37. Within a min i just walk out the place, I'm glad i did. Thanks for your 1950s service!! Maybe i just travel back to time.. LOL

Just had a horrible service experience at doo wop today 9/2/13. Sat a dirty counter for over TEN minutes without being acknowledged. We love the food and have been coming here regularly for a few years, but we won't be back.

Nice place to go to for a Sunday breakfast. 3 diners in total. When we walked in it was busy. Always a good sign. Had to wait a few minutes for a seat but the good was worth the wait. Great variety on the menu so everyone found something they wanted to eat. The bottomless coffee added to breakfast. Glad to know this place is in walking distance. Definitely going back again.

Took another Yelpers advice and had the blueberry pancakes! Yum. Very tasty and HUGE! I also got a side of potatoes covered with onions, cheese and most importantly BACON! Delish. Glad I now know the drill - There is a guy who has the sole job of pouring coffe. I made the mistake of trying to order from him. OOPS! Newbie alert! Anyhow, everything was good, and varied crowd, and a good sized menu- Make sure to check for specials on the walls or you might miss something good!

Updated 5/25/14: They really need to work on their service. I've continued to come here for the past year or two and the service is sub-par. You'll get a drink after you sit down and won't get another until you finish your meal (except for coffee, which is constantly offered). I ordered a milk for my son and he kept asking me for a drink while eating his meal and we didn't get it until we were halfway done eating. I had to pull aside the guy who offers the coffee and ask him for the milk. The servers just seem to be checked out. My husband likes the food but thinks I'm crazy for continuing to drag him here because the service has gotten worse. I just want management to see this and speak to their servers about their attitude and attention to details. They have a decent breakfast joint here, but I won't continue to frequent their business until they work on their service. ----- I've been frequenting the Doo Wop Diner for about two years and feel its a fairly good diner for the area. It's nowhere near as good as The Breakfast Club out in Allston but on days when we don't want to make the drive, it's a perfectly decent breakfast. Getting there after 10 AM usually means that you'll be waiting in line. They have at least three high chairs so there are usually enough to go around. I usually get the Ted Williams and share it with my toddler. The meal is HUGE. Two eggs, meat, toast, potatoes, and either French toast or pancakes. Their FT isn't bad, but I prefer the pancakes. 9 times out of 10 my over easy eggs are done just right, and only very rarely are they a little undercooked. Their bacon is extra greasy and thin, nothing special. The potatoes that come with the meal aren't great. They way they're fried makes them almost seem like they're breaded. It's hard to explain, but they're not my favorite. Perfectly edible, but I've had better. Sometimes we order oatmeal with fruit for my son, which is a huge portion. They have a ton of options on the menu so there's something for everyone. Service is hit or miss. Some of the servers are super chatty with regulars and spend too much time socializing and tend to neglect their tables. Then there are others that are always on top of things. They even make sure my kid's food comes out first because he gets antsy waiting for it. There's a guy who comes around refilling coffee, so your mug will rarely be empty. I will continue to return to Doo Wop for a solid breakfast.

Oh, we'll definitely be back here! We stopped in on a Saturday adventure, and it didn't disappoint. Service was quick and friendly, our omelets were inexpensive and delicious, and while slightly outdated, the decor is fine and the menu is cute and kitschy. I got a broccoli and cheese omelet with eggbeaters and it hit the spot. I got the basic potatoes, Jesse got the crazy ones with cheese and bacon. I think mine were better, but it's personal preference. If you don't want your toast buttered, make sure to mention it because it'll automatically get done. We didn't get any pancakes, but some came out while we were there and they were HUGE. If I want pancakes, I'll come here.

Friendly staff, fast and delicious food what more can I ask for? This is a GREAT place to eat breakfast, and it's nice and quiet in the morning. Service can be slow at times, but gotta remember that there are only 2 waitresses and they're doing their best! Please come visit! Great restaurant, absolute favorite diner. :-)

Wow. I just browsed through the reviews for this place, and was a bit surprised at the negative words. Let me start by saying, this is a small diner in the city. Did any of you really expect a fancy lounging area and a red carpet rolled out for you? I, was lucky enough to squeeze past the crowd forming at the doorway, and score two empty seats at the counter. Of course, a line at the door usually means something's being done right in the establishment. People don't wait for bad food and service. Starved after my shopping trip for more slate tiles and oak wood for the new table I was building, I was a hungry girl. And very happy to be front row to the grill. My buddy and I ordered a ridiculous amount of food. Two Chubby Cheddars, (scrambled eggs over English Muffins loaded with cheese), which typically come with two eggs. We asked for four apiece. Two sides of bacon, two sides of sausages, hash browns, and hell, I told her, throw me a side of corned beef hash. Coffee now, milk with my meal. Keep in mind, my order was placed just a few minutes after sitting down. The waitress wasn't peppy, but rather normal, in a tired, I've been here for five hours and my feet hurt sort of way. I can appreciate a real person. At least when she does smile at me, I know it's real. Of course, it's hard sometimes not to smile at my wit. ;) I used the bathroom, and it was clean. Which is more than I can say for some of the fancier places I have visited. My eating surface is also clean, what more can a girl ask for? A clean place to piss and a clean place to eat. I don't care if there's grease stains behind the grill, or coffee stains on the floor. This is the life of a diner that's stood for many years. Some people can be so snooty and unforgiving. My food was delivered immediately. And everything was great. Plenty of eggs tossed on my plate, and messy just the way I like. The bacon is perfectly cooked, not over or under done. And my milk, is delivered within a minute of my food. Usually, I'm having to ask for the milk I ordered with my meal, and wind up getting it halfway through. Kudos to that tired waitress. And then there was the corned beef hash. A classic food for a girl like me, it was a constant at my grandmother's house. And this was not out of the can, rather homemade and damn frikkin good. I had a chat with Sal the cook, and he told me he had made it fresh just that morning. As full as I was, I ate this heaping plate in it's entirety, and was even tempted to ask for some to go. When I received the bill, we'd racked up a mere $25. Not a terrible thing for two people who rather enjoy a lot of food in front of us. And as an added bonus, the waitress had crossed out the charge for extra eggs, per order of my new found friend, the cook. Not something many diners do. And I frequent quite a few. In fact, now that I think about it, it's never been done. So for those who called this place dirty, overpriced, and only worthy of one star, I say to you, keep your holier than thou attitudes in the fancier places, I'll keep my down to earth one in joints like this.

Dirty restaurant and outdated in every way. Menu is confuddled and discombobulating. The owner needs to spend some money on the decor and find someone that understands what makes a good menu work. A little love and this could be a great diner.

I went here last week for breakfast and I really planned on getting something light. Well things did not go as planned and I ended up stuffing my face until it nearly fell off. I ordered the Ted Williams, which is two pancakes, two eggs, two sausage, two pieces of bacon, home fries, and toast. Yeah I know I am greedy so judge if you want. I had a gay old time eating so much that I could barely fit in the car to get home. Everything was just right. For once someone actually understood what over medium means and made my eggs right. The home fries were crisp and well seasoned...take that Linden Diner (home of the mushy home fries). I am not a big pancake eater, but I ate every bit. The only thing I did not finish was the toast. Shit by the time I ate all the other stuff there was no room :-) Bonus points for their very tasty coffee that was not weak like most diner coffee.

4.5 stars only because the place is so small and is always packed on the weekend mornings and I hate waiting in the cold like I did last time. Otherwise, it'd get five! Food here is always fantabulous. I typically get the french toast, home fries, and a side of hash. The hash here is freshly prepared from scratch and it's incredible. No crap from a can - hooray! There is also the bottomless coffee. There is a guy or gal walking around with a carafe of freshly brewed coffee constantly. A waiter scared the bejesus out of me once by popping over a cutout in the wall above where I was seated and refilling my cup which was halfway. Now THAT'S service. It's a seat yourself, every-man-for-himself-on-the-weekend type place. Typical 50s diner look, checkered floors, cutesy names for all the menu items. The service is fantastic! I've never been left unattended here. This is my go-to breakfast joint whenever I'm in Boston. And it's CHEAP. Like under $20 for a belly-busting meal for 2 cheap. Can't go wrong! I wouldn't go here with a large group, though. Especially not on the weekend during the breakfast rush. I think the 2 largest tables stuffed into the corners seat 6, and they're rarely available. All in all, if you're in the Malden area and want a good breakfast with friendly service, come here. They won't disappoint you!

I have been here a couple times and every time just looking at the food made me sick. Everything is pre-prepared and microwaved. The service is terrible and slow. The last time I went they forgot half of our order and still charged us. Not to mention the place looks disgusting and the clientele looked like they just stepped out of a homeless shelter. DO NOT GO HERE!!!

Oh I love it here. Greasy, cheap, but you gotta love how good it is. Amazing watching your waiter cook 4 breakfasts with superlative skill. Just don't eat here if you're a germaphobe.

I really love this place! I wasn't expecting much, despite the great reviews, because it was insanely cheap. But the food and atmosphere were great and the service was fast. I am determined to be a regular at this place.

I came here this morning with my mom and the service is excellent and so is the food!! I had the french toast with powdered sugar & cinnamon on top! It was amazing. The home fries were seasoned very well and the eggs were perfection. I could have added salt & pepper but it wasn't necessary. This was my seconds time here and I plan to keep coming back. The portions are extremely generous and I took the rest home!

How have I been remiss in writing a review of the Doo Wop for so long? Listen, the best thing about this place is it reminds me of the breakfast and lunch counters of my childhood. It isn't fancy, but the food is good and the staff is friendly. It is similar to The Breakfast Club in Allston but with nicer staff. The last time I came here was the morning after my birthday and it was the perfect place to go to recharge after a boisterous night. There's plenty of parking on the street and in the lot next door and I've never seen it so busy that you can't get a table.

Quick service, good food, great prices. Had the French toast, my people had egg sandwiches. Definite win.

Still sitting at the Doo Wop right now, post-breakfast. Sweet jumpin' Jebus what a tasty meal! The previous yelper's suggestion of the blueberry pancakes and hash were *spot on*. Service is very fast, and the coffee is religiously watched over - I don't think I ever saw the bottom of my coffee cup the entire meal. A great place for a quick weekend breakfast!

Good prices and yummy diner food. If that's what you're after, this is the place. I had the Jack Benny (Eggs Benedict). The eggs were poached perfectly. Home fries were nice--not greasy, soggy, or too salty at all. My friends had omelets of various types, and they all said they were delicious. I have never seen a waiter so fast with the coffee refills. I don't think anyone's cup *ever* got lower than 75% filled! No burned coffee, either. Our waitress was friendly and totally patient with the kids. The kids' meal of 1 egg and 1 pancake was more like 3 pancakes fused in a Mickey Mouse shape, to the joy of the 6-year-old devouring them. Don't know how I managed to live around the corner for years and never actually eat here before. I'll definitely be back for breakfast.

A great place for breakfast if you are within walking distance. Reasonable prices and hash made on the premises. The space feels kind of cramped though so I am not sure if I would ever go here with more than one or two other people in tow.

Stopped in for breakfast with my mom. Crowded little place on the weekends. We sat at the counter. Service was good, despite being so crowded. Food was delicious! Coffee kept flowing! Will definitely be back!

Blueberry pancake Fabulousness & Hash Heaven (not from the can people)!!! Here is the story of a sad North Shore girl who moved to the South Shore for her husband and an affordable home who is sad because food just isn't the same down in the South Shore. Take pancakes for example, or any other breakfast item or joint. They just don't cut it. Doo-Wop is perfection. They are affordable and have consistently great food. The service is spotty. They can be a little rough around the edges or plenty rough depending on the day. However, once you get to know the staff you end up understanding them a little better and the edges don't bother you because you realize that it's not personal. Let's get to the food. The pancakes are just amazing and I have found no others that can compare. The hash is home made and looks like shredded beef and is addictive, so be aware. The omelettes are huge and suprisingly very tasty. Seriously, I didn't think you could screw up an omelette until I left the North Shore - but you can...you really can. So, go to Doo-Wop, enjoy the 50's vibe and enjoy your meal. Please get the blueberry pancakes and hash and let me know what you think because I am so sure you will not be dissapointed.

I've been yelping for a while, and always forget to write reviews! My boyfriend and I love a good breakfast place, and diner food is always welcome. This place is great. The food is always tasty, and the waitresses are all really nice. I can only attest to the cornbeef hash and the AMAZING potatoes, but the man totally digs the blueberry pancakes. We've been 4 or 5 times since I found the Doo Wop, and we get the same thing every time. Why only 4 stars? It's great, and a good place to go for a quick breakfast that doesn't break the bank (usually takes 30 minutes from ordering to paying, and for the 2 of us is usually $20 or less). But it's nothing really special. That said, I would still recommend this place to most of my friends looking for a quick, cheap breakfast.

My partner loves diners so when I saw this place on a drive to Malden I knew we had to go back there. It was okay but nothing special. The menu is fun but the food is only average. The service was excellent.

The pink and white awning say it all.. A 50's theme diner with all the hot rod, Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe pictures to cover every piece of wall in the joint.. There are several bar stools to your left and tons of tables on your right.. I sat down of course at the bar stool area and was approached by a friendly staff member.. As I glance over to my right a see a picture of Chef Giada De Laurentiis, in which i must say is a very attractive woman.. I don't remember the specific name of the dish i ordered but I pretty much got, 3 eggs (scrambled) 3 sausage links, home fries, and white toast.. The eggs were good, as it wasn't so dry as some other places make it.. The home fries were to die for.. Just small enough cuts to deep fry to get them crispy on every bite.. The toast had just enough butter to not make it super soggy in 30 seconds.. I would dine at this place again..

The morning after my wedding, I ate at the Dow Wop Diner, and wouldn't you know the bartender at the reception was waiting tables. I don't know who was more surprised to see whom. She was shocked to see my groom alive, since the previous night we celebrated in the good ol' fashioned Italian/Irish tradition of drinking lots sambuca. This isn't the point. The point is Doo Wop is an alright little breakfast joint. The food is straight up greasy, which can be a very helpful thing (given all that sambuca.) I usually get the Jack Benny but the specials are well worth checking out, as they can be more exciting than what's on the menu. But the Doo Wop is a little disappointing to look at on the inside. It's got that 50s decor and the counter with barstools, but it's a kind of grimy and if I'm not mistaken, the floor is a little uneven. But what should really worry you are those coffee re-fills. Yes they're endless, but you never know when you're going to get them. The man who typically comes out with the pot is a bit overzealous about the job at hand. I'm talking, he's pouring more coffee in my cup while I'm drinking it. No lie, the cup is seconds away from my face, not on the table and here comes my re-fill. Good god be careful!

When living in the area, I was a faithful patron of Doo Wop Diner. Every Sunday morning I was in line waiting to get a table in the tiny place. It has that diner feel with lots of decoration and coffee cups that never go below half-filled. My favorite part is that I can get a little bit of everything with the "Ted Williams", complete with eggs, home fries, toast, pancakes, bacon, and sausage. I can never get half way through it but it's totally worth the $8 you pay for it. LOVE. THIS. PLACE.

I came here this morning to do some take-out and was very happy when I returned home to hot blueberry pancakes and hash. I wasn't too sure how the take-out would end up sitting in styrofoam for about 10 minutes, but it didn't really seem to make a difference, except for the whipped cream for the pancakes, which I asked for on the side, melted. I've done take-out from other places which didn't turn out so great. So, sometimes, it's hit or miss. For some reason, the hash portion seemed to be a bit less than when you do sit down. Overall, quite impressed and would do it again!!

This is the best place for a traditional-type breakfast in Malden. It's got style, really good food, and great service. I'd recommend the Jack Benny (Eggs Benedict), corned beef hash (tastes homemade) and the pancakes. I've never seen the bottom of my coffee cup because it always gets refilled before I get there.

  • Heather S.

Kinda small. They really don't have a lot of tables and space. The food is good though, very moderatly priced and I love the names that they have. The John Wayne is a 7oz steak with eggs The Bueberry Hill is a stack of blueberry pancakes and the rest of the menu has alot of other breakfast and lunch items that are 50' references The decor also is really good. The corn beef hash is one of the best I've had, scrambeled eggs are good. The home fries are delicious and I'm very picky about home fries. They only thing I didn't like is that I ordered my steak tips well-done and I got them burnt. It is possible to make well-done steak and not burn it, if you know what you're doing.

I love this place. The food is cheap as hell and the portion sizes are decent, too. It's not the cleanest place in America, and the decor really IS from the 50's (along with the milk machine, grills and everything else in this place) but WHO CARES!!! I will admit..I've been here before and received some shitty service, but most times it's fine. The only weird thing is the music selection..they are NEVER playing music from the 50's. Last time I was here (about a month ago) they we're playing Kiss 108. UGH!

I would give no stars if I could. This was one of, if not THE worst dining experiences I have ever had. So OK, it's Malden and pickings are slim and I wasn't expecting anything world class but the place has been around a while so I figured it would at least be decent. The waitress was obviously new or not even a waitress. She was AWFUL. I ordered something by name on the menu and she goes "what's that"... I told her, it's a tossed salad with grilled chicken on it. So she writes it down and my father orders a mushroom and cheese omelette. After about 10 minutes we see the orders up on the counter but she is filling syrup bottles and ignores the orders for another 5 minutes. Then she sees me looking at them and goes to get them. But there is no chicken on the salad and no toast for my father. She says she will be right back with both. The toast is so tiny and swimming in butter and they made him a sausage and cheese omelette instead of mushroom. She brings out my chicken and it is LITERALLY a microwaved breaded chicken patty cut into strips. I can't even get a piece of real chicken grilled on a grill? It's a diner... is that too much to expect? It said it on the menu. The salad itself was a few pieces of iceberg lettuce, a cut up tomato, piece of cucumber and some shredded carrot. She brought me a regular grocery store bottle of french dressing. It was cheap but I wouldn't eat there for free. I am actually really annoyed but I was hungry and ate it and didn't complain. Not worth it for a place like that who won't care anyway. Not like they are going to change but I want to deter other people from eating there. Awful.

Ate here again recently. Different staff, day of the week, and time of day, but still damn good food. My friend and I both got the All-Meat Burrito with the home fries cooked with onion and pepper. The special home fries were supposed to be extra, but the waitress didn't charge us. The food was delicious and we had a great time! The bill including tax and tip was $20. I plan on eating here whenever I am in the area!

The Doo Wop has become a Sunday ritual for me. I thought that all of the cheap, bottomless coffee cup diners had gone the way of the Dodo, but the Doo Wop is just that kind of place. There's nothing fancy about it, but it brims with the charm of a local meeting place. The decor is appropriately kitschy, and the menu features hokey names for classic diner fare, like my favorite, the Chubby Cheddar (scrambled eggs on top of buttery English muffins with a generous helping of shredded cheddar melted on top). The home fries are classic--no onions or fancy seasonings, just the plain, good crispiness that goes well with any meal on the menu. Prices are low, low, low (I usually go with my grandpa, who insists upon paying. We have probably eaten every combination of breakfasts and sides on the menu, and the bill has never been more than $13). As with any diner, your service depends on the mood of the waitress...but for the most part, the food arrives quickly, the coffee cups stay full, and the staff is friendly. My grandpa and I are regulars there now, and I look forward to every meal at the Doo Wop with a warm heart.

Well let me start by saying I go to doo wop at least twice a week. There's a saying to tell if a breakfast place is good you have the pancakes. Anybody can make eggs and toast but pancakes take a little skill. My favorite meal is the Ted Williams. Its a real belly filler, they give you 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 pieces of bacon, 2 sausage, with potatoes and toast. My wife's grandmother loves it there, she was very impressed with the generosity of the food they don't skimp out. she order one egg and kept on talking about how much egg she got. So if you are ever in Malden center in the morning and looking for a bite to eat definitely stop by the doo wop.

I went to the Doo Wop a few times back when I lived in Malden. Its cheap and has standard American fair. Its a small place and weekends can be busy. Check out my list of New England diners for more diner options.

Great little diner. If you like corned beef hash, this is the place. None of that canned stuff with mini potato cubes. The hash is handmade and is really good.

This is one of the best diners you will go to. The staff are great and great people, the food is super delicious, filling, and dirt cheap. Great for breakfast and children. If you are hungover and your mouth tastes like an ashtray covered in beer, this is not the place for you. I highly recommend this place.

Went there for the first time this past weekend with my daughter (almost 5yrs old). We were at a kid's birthday party at the bowling alley across the street but she was too shy to eat there. So saw this place and she was begging for a hot dog. Even tho they were "only serving breakfast on the weekends" the waitress was super helpful and flexible. She got my girl her hot dog. Staff is SUPER nice. The place is a diner - nothing really special, other than very reasonable, tasty, diner food. Prices were very modest. It felt very much like a family place and I'm looking forward to going back. Really, it's just a diner - don't be expecting anything more than that and you won't be disappointed. Hot dog for her, chocolate milk, BLT and coffee for me. bill came to just over $10 before tip. The coffee is good too btw. Thumbs up

We've hit here a couple of times with the kids on a weekend morning. It's best to sit at a table on the right of the door... you don't notice the crud in the counter/grille area. It's breakfast on a budget so don't expect any fluff (unless it falls from the ceiling onto your plate). The service is slow and the staff is most times irritating... I find myself looking at the waitress thinking "Why are your lips still moving?". I'm not a huge fan but in a pinch if I can't get somewhere and am too lazy to fry an egg myself it'll do!

  • Allen W.

I've been here a few times for lunch. The food is pretty good and they have bottomless coffee, which is always a plus. The portions are fairly big and the prices aren't too bad. The diner itself is kind of dirty and should get remodeled. Wait staff is friendly, but I think I remember one time waiting a decent amount of time before I got any service.

  • Eric M.

you just get the feel that they never clean the place, and I'm not sure how the board of health lets them get away with what they call a bathroom. The waiter was the slowest thing I have ever seen, and my grilled muffin was frozen in the middle. Coffee was good, and another waitress (not my waiter) gave me refills.

Doo Wop diner is a great diner!. I have never been let down. The food is always excellent and always hits the spot. Please remember it is a diner so don't go expection gourmet and extravagant food. And don't expect cheery flair wearing servers because again IT"S a DINER!! SO if you are looking for some really good homestyle food then you are in the right place!

  • Mike T.

My wife and I love this place. We always sit at the counter and the coffee is endless. The cornbeef hash is made in house and some of the best I have ever had. Waitstaff can be pleasant at times and not so pleasant sometimes. The food is your average diner food. Good Eats!

Doo Wop Diddy Puke. I was not the least bit impressed with this place. So much infact they aren't even getting one of my nicely written works. They are getting Bullets. * I had the Jumpin' Jack Flash - two eggs, potatoes, homeade hash and toast. Ehh. I should have stayed home this morning and forced my lazy ass to cook breakfast would have been much better. * The restaurant was kind of dirty and greasy - yeah I know it's a diner but..... * One of the waitresess felt it was important to bitch very loud in the open about the fact that someone didn't get a few rolls of quarters. OK, they didn't get them we know. Now take a fucking $20 bill and walk over to the bank it's not that hard to change. * The same waitress - I shall call her Flo then bitched at one of the cooks for another 10 minutes that she didn't have quarters. Hey honey - 2 dimes and a nickle, or 25 pennies, or 1 dime, and 15 pennies they all fucking work. I don't think your customer's gonna care as long as they get the right change. Shut Up - or at least go in the back where the customers don't need to hear you. * My waitress took my order, brought my food and then incase I couldn't see the bill lifted my plate up in mid bite to put it under. Talk about a pressure sale. Don't worry honey, you'll get your undeserved tip for my $7.50 bill. * Since I wasn't checked on - I had to make my way to the register - note I was sitting at the counter - just to get my change. * They won't serve lunch items at breakfast time. Hey I love a nice juicy burger at 8:30 in the morning. If you let me have this my review may have been 2 stars instead of one. I'd consider going back to try out their lunch and diner items....but I'm afraid Flo might beat the crap out of me if I ask for a quarter. So this place is heading to my restaurant graveyard never to be revisited.

Based on Julia's review we went here for breakfast yesterday and were not disappointed. Walked right in and sat down at the counter. Great coffee at this place!! I had the Chubby Cheddar with a side of bacon and my husband had the omelette w/sausage, bacon, ham and cheese (how's the cholesterol honey?!). Both were delicious and the home fries that come with all egg dishes are fabulous!

I came for breakfast on a late sunday morning recently. I ordered the blue berry pancakes and had some home fries on the side along with a bottomless cup of coffee. The pancakes were pretty good with tons of blueberries. They didn't have syrup on the table or didn't even give it to me but they had whipped creme on my pancakes which I managed to deal with. The home fries was pretty good too. Not too greasy and not too overcooked. The coffee service was awesome and probably one of the best. The waitress was friendly and quick. Overall it was a decent place to go to when I'm in the area. I definitely have been to better diners and had better breakfast.
