So I deviated this morning...from my usual breakfast spot and hit up this Diner in Lowell on a bright and early daylight savings time morning. I knew that "springing" forward an hour would mean that the Diner would be less busy than usual...as what are those stats...like 4 out of 5 dentists will forget to change their clock? Somethin' like that... Now, the Owl Diner is also known as the Four Sisters Diner. Apparently, once upon a time, 4 sisters must have owned this place...you'll see a pic of them in the dining room. And apparently, they really liked Owls. Ok, I dunno if that's quite historically accurate. Maybe b/c at one time it was open really late at night? Hmmm... Anyway, so I ordered two eggs over medium...which came with home fries and toast. I also ordered a single blueberry pancake. I like that they have this option...just a single pancake, but the single is pretty big. The waitress asked me...probably a good 2-3 times if I wanted some sort of meat with the breakfast. To my knowledge, I said no every time...but out came 4 strips of bacon with my meal. So like any good LOLCat would do: "Haz bacon, I eatz dem." What's a LOLCat? C'mon now...where have you been? icanhascheezburger.com So...THE pancake: "Was this an awesome pancake?", you ask? Well, I ask YOU... "Do cows give milk?" "Does a cheetah have spots?" "Does a camel piss in the desert? "Does a bear poop in the woods? "Does Tiger Woods love punani more than golf?" "Does your 5 yr old have a better vocabulary than George Bush Jr.? YES...My colleagues, friends and fellow Yelpers...if you remember only ONE thing from my review, remember this: These pancakes are the paragon of ALL that is Pancake. Quotes from Celebrities whom have tasted these pancakes: Aunt Jemima: "Shoo-guh...deez are da best pancakes yooz eva gonna eat." Mrs. Butterworth: "Oooh...I never put my syrup on anything BUT these pancakes, honey." George Bush Jr: "The deliciousity of these pancakes is so overwhelmingful." Perfectly grilled on both sides...super fluffy...slathered with butter...syrup over the top. Stuffed this into my noise hole like someone was gonna take it away from me... Eggs: Looked over done, but they were actually perfect...not greasy...and the yolk still runny for some toast dipping. Toast: Small slices of bread are used...and they put more butter on there than should be allowed...which makes it over the top good...and bad. :) Bacon: Perfect combo between crispy and jiggy. Home Fries: Now, I am not a huge fan of home fries...at least in the New England neck of the woods. I prefer shredded up hash browns...but for the area, these are some of the better home fries I've had. They give you plenty of them too. Now, I assume that like most places, piles of potatoes sit idly on the side of the grill, ideally staying warm until people order them up. And that, in itself, is understandable. Diners would be waiting too long for breakfast, if you made every order of home fries "to order". Would have been nice, if they just spatula'd a single serving to the hot side of the grill just to warm em up tho. These, must have been on top of the pile. Tasty...but cold. And you potato lovers out there have to agree...piping hot potatoes are bomb-tastic. Cold potatoes? Um, no, kthxbai. I even noticed two, obviously, regular customers across the dining room...they passed on their plates of home fries too when the plates were bussed from their table. C'mon...if the regulars aren't diggin' something, that should prolly be addressed. Coffee: Good coffee...maybe just a tad on the weaker side, but only b/c they side it up w/ Light Cream as opposed to Half-n-Half... Cost: SO I read that this place is pricy, but really...it's not unreasonable. Some things are priced a little bit high...but most items are average. Some reviewer earlier said that one egg on toast is $4...but that comes with toast and home fries...at least on the menu I saw this morning. Service: So...let me first say, I might be a little spoiled by my regular breakfast spot. There, I am a regular...and we're treated very nicely and warmly. Here...nah-so-much. You only have ONE chance for a 1st impression... I mean, some of the staffers were par for course friendly...but our immediate waitress seemed like we were a bother for her. At one point, she noticed how quickly I scarfed down the awesome pancake..she remarked: "Didn't like the pancake, huh?" So, I participated in what I thought was gonna be a chuckle for both of us and said "Oh no, it was awful..." Not only did she NOT chuckle or crack a smirk, but just lifted my plate away with a blank look...almost as if to say, "Seriously, dude, did you even taste that?" Haha...ok, I might be exaggerating a bit for the story...even so, not the most welcoming of wagons. Conversely, the cute cashier was very gracious...which leads to my final point: CASH ONLY

We were very fortunate to stumble onto this place! I would not hesitate to return. It's hard to find places that have cream chipped beef on toast, so I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn't believe it actually. One difference was that the beef was actually corned beef which is higher quality than the dishes that are served in PA, where it is also dubbed shit on a shingle, but equally delicious!

What a great place for breakfast!! Parking is a bit suspect but we were lucky to find a spot right next to the door. Ordered some delicious muffins as we waited for my mother to arrive. Staff were amazingly prompt and pleasant. I ordered the sausage, cheese and tomato omelette with home fries and wheat toast. Good portions and the food was delicious . Will definitely be going back

you want an authentic American diner experience and great food? the owl is your best bet. every time we're in town visiting my husband's family I have to stop in. great breakfast food and if you get there early enough, coffee rolls (cinnamon buns). I recently had the Irish Benny and it was so good I almost cried. eggs Benedict but with corned beef hash instead of ham. winner!!

Oh, the Owl... Food generally so good, management so bad... My wife and I have been eating here for years. She gets the pancakes, I get the corned beef hash, and my life like, well, everything. Prices are good/ what you expect. Tastes are generally delicious. For years, we've been suffering through their cash only policy, despite the fact that a 'cash only' policy is about as old as their original dining car. We don't typically carry cash and we have made the walk of shame down the street to the nearest ATM more than once. Today, a new announcement in their outdoor marquee: WE NOW ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS! Yay!! Welcome to the mid-20'th century, 50 years late... But sure we'll go in and have a nice breakfast. Again, we tend to not carry cash. The wife has pancakes, I have the hash... Nice breakfast, home fries are always good. We finish up and the Kids are getting antsy, let's scram. I get to the register, and despite the glorious pronouncement on the outdoor marquee, we're greeted with this sign at the register (see pic below). Can't tip on credit?? Are you kidding me? Again, who carries cash?? And I don't want to not leave a tip, so I'm still forced to walk to the bank-- in an establishment that NOW TAKES CREDIT CARDS!! So, (1) these guys haven't really increased their clients' convenience to eat at the restaurant, and (2) they're apparently too cheap to pay the $0.03 charge per dollar to allow the patrons to tip on their cards. If making those signs cost $10.00, then that would have been the equivalent of about $330 worth of tips. Stupid, shortsighted and CHEAP. -- and puts your waitstaff at risk to lose their tips. Again, it's 2015. Grow up Owl.

First off, parking is horible. Not too many spots. There was no hostess to seat us so we went to find out own seats. Coffee tastes burnt, they probably use an autodripper. Also came with only two creamers -- I prefer black so I could taste the quality of the beans and brew but others might opt for more creamers than only two. The one thing I find interesting is that this place has less customers and more waiters compared to another diner I go to but our waitress' attitude was not really inviting. So for the food portion of this review. I had the corned beef hash. Funny thing, I asked the waitress if the hash is made in-house. She told me it was. Alright, I order it, you can't really go wrong with corned beef hash. When it came out, it was very disappointing. It's pretty much the Hormel canned crap that's fried with butter on the griddle. Two thumbs down. The potatoes was also seasoned only with salt. Kind of bland, at least imo. I also had the poached eggs. They were overdone. Would I come here again? Only if I'm craving canned food.

A group of us volunteer at an area charity nearly every Saturday morning. When finished we usually like to go out for coffee, and a brunch kind of thing and chat. I've been to this establishment twice for breakfast with my volunteer friends on a late Saturday morning. . The first visit was great - We are a group of 10+, seated in the new section, and the service was fantastic... food was average. Nothing special, but again - the service was excellent. The SECOND visit, which was today I am sorry to have to give it a 2 star rating, at best. Saturday morning, close to noon - it wasn't busy. We were only a group of 4 this week. I was the only coffee drinker, and I'll be honest that I'm the type who, when I order it - I need it NOW. Our server took what seemed to be forever... Yikes, it would have been nice if they were making a new pot? to inform me. But that didn't happen. Two of us were served our meals almost immediately. The other 2 waited WAY TOO LONG for theirs- it's not like they had ordered anything elaborate. The server never came near us to even let them know it would be out... nothing. We had to flag down another to inquire... Anyway, by the time they got their food, we were finished... to me that's far from cool. Had we had any indication that would happen, we would have made it clear that we all need to be served at the same time. AND, again- coffee must be at a premium, because I had to wait ages for a second cup! Our breakfasts were so-so, home fries were burnt to the point where they could not be stabbed with a fork.. just pushed aside. What can I say.... no return. We will be finding another place to go next week.

Had really great hopes for this place, after reading great reviews on Yelp and being a diner aficionado. We are generally very forgiving where food service, especially diners, is concerned but this morning, after walking in at 9 am, order taken by 0905, and no food by 0940, we walked out. Our waitress made no effort to explain where our food was or to check on it. Other people in our area who arrived after us, were served well before us. And our order was basic, basic, basic. We both had places to be. I'm calling management about this. It was definitely irritating. That being said, if you like classic diner cars, this is the place! Soo cute inside, I had such high hopes. Sad day.

Really a 3.5 stars. I had to try Owl when my niece who lives in Lowell pointed it out from the street and said that everyone loves that place. It really is an institution in Lowell. Very old school. It looked packed from the outside, but it was bigger than it looked from the front. We found a nice window booth in the dining area to the right and behind the box car front. The table was covered in advertising from Lowell small businesses. The menu titled "four sisters diner" was given to us. The history if the diner is printed on the front of the menu and I thought it was a nice touch. Coffee was served in a mug full of advertising as well. I had no issue with this. It shows the diner supports Lowell businesses. It also reflects how popular the diner is with the locals. I love the fact that this diner isn't a pork haven like most breakfast places. I got the Irish Benny. I absolutely love corned beef and corn beef hash, so this was perfect. The coffee wasn't great, but what can you expect from a region that hails to Dunkin Donuts. The potatoes weren't bad but nothing to write home about. I'd recommend breakfast at Owl to anyone visiting Lowell, Mass.

My brother, crew, and I got here at 6am to have breakfast after breaking night. The breakfast was good and filling...but the service was just ok. Waitress was not welcoming.

Arrived on a Friday afternoon around 1 pm on our quest to visit as many NE diners as we can! High rated in a recent Boston Globe Magazine and by friends, fairly easy to find off of the Lowell Connector. Parked right out front and greeted immediately as we entered. All of the waitresses were very friendly and appeared to be helping one another at all of the tables. We decided on breakfast foods for lunch, me the Woburn Omelet with spinach, mushrooms, no cheese but onions with a side of corned beef hash, my friend, the Methuen Omelet with a southwestern flair (shredded chicken, salsa, onions, no cheese). Both came with home fries and buttered toast. Our meals arrived fairly quickly and I was immediately impressed with the home fries which I often find too salty/seasoned, oily and mushy. NOT here! They were lightly seasoned, hot, crispy and not greasy. EXCELLENT! Our omelets were also very tasty. Since we're both trying not to eat gluten, I only had a bite of the wheat toast which was good but had a lot of butter already on it. Overall, we were very pleased with our meals and would return again. The only odd thing is the waitress dropped off our tab before asking if we wanted anything else ... perhaps because it was getting close to closing? Plus, they don't tally your tab. I had to refer to the menu to cross check the prices of our menu items as it was difficult to read the numbers on our tab. After adding up the tab, I included tip and forgot about the tax. My friend reminded me ... good thing because the waitress would have received a smaller tip if I had not added in the sales tax. Perhaps they should tally the tab for folks like me.

Please do not bother to come here unless you like really flimsy paper plates, plastic utensils, and a "I don't care" environment. When I first walked in I got stares and looks of "you're too well dressed to be in our diner" from the waitstaff which wasn't pleasant. It was Lowell so they probably aren't accustomed to affluent people walking into their place. Point of clarity, to me a dive, diner, etc are usually great places to go to where you can find friendly people and good food, but I was taken back by the entire experience. The meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy tasted like they came out of a box. Absolutely no flavor or consistency I would expect. Every spoonful was regrettable and re enforced the unpleasant sights, sounds, and aroma emanating around me. I managed to choke down the food as my low blood decided to kick in so what could I do. I was happy that the waitress was nice, too bad I can't say anything better about the rest of the experience.

If you're looking for a great diner breakfast, it really doesn't get any better than this. I recommend the Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine. Service is friendly and efficient, every dish we've tried has been terrific.

Despite being a Lowell resident for 6+ years, I have never eaten here until a few weeks ago. It's a diner, with all the associated diner decor. I had bacon and egg on a bagel, which came with home fries. I said "no dairy" and I wasn't sure about the home fries, but they were so tasty I ate them anyway. The staff is attentive without being overbearing. We went at noon and the crowd thinned out soon after we arrived. This place gets busy so be prepared to wait! The entryway is small so you may wait outside.

My husband and I have discovered that you can have two completely different dining experiences here based on which booth you choose. First and most importantly, the food here is pretty decent. They have very good eggs Benedict and the pancakes are light and fluffy. If I was to rate the diner based solely on food, it would get a solid 4 stars. If you choose to eat in the original trolley cart, WATCH OUT. The waitress doesn't even bother leaving her counter to ask what you want to drink. When she finally comes over for your order, she's already walking away before you're done talking. Totally rude and unprofessional. Eat in the newer dining room section, and the service is much better. Its like the waitstaff actually wants to earn a good tip! Amazing how that works. :) Moral of the story: try out the diner but run to the dining room, not the trolley cart.

I've been here several times now, and I've concluded that this is the best breakfast place in Lowell and probably the Merrimack Valley. So far, everything I've gotten has been good. The omelets are fluffy, well-formed, and are diverse (and named for streets in Lowell.) The pancakes are hot, a crispy around the edges, and strike the right balance between fluffiness and firmness (if that's the right word). The potatoes are actually flavorful, which I find to be a rare quality in most breakfast potatoes. So far, all of the waitresses have been friendly and attentive, and have been very sweet to my four year-old son. The only two minor negatives about this place are the parking: there's are two lots but they're tight and fill quickly, so you might end up looking for a spot on Appleton Street. Also, while the diner does accept credit cards, they won't let you put your tip on it, so be sure to bring some cash.

  • Luke F.

Food... Alright. Home fries were still raw. Eggs were ok. Prices... A bit high considering it's located in Lowell and its your average breakfast spot with decent food. Don't sit by a window in the winter. I get that it's an "authentic original" diner but there was thick ice forming inside the single pane windows. I'll pass next time unless hungover (which is rare) combined with starving out of my mind (not so rare) and can't make it to a better spot (would rather push onward).

My first time at owl diner a few weeks ago, I went with two friends. I ended up getting the middlesex st omelette. It was delicious and I liked the home fries. The home fries were okay, but I would have loved if they added more spices on it. The staff are super friendly and they are courteous. It gets a little crowded but I think it was because I went at a busy time for them. I will definitely go back when I have the chance.

This review is severely biased, for starters. The Owl is right down the street from my house and I eat there all the time with my family and anyone who comes to visit. I wouldn't necessarily say it's the best food of the lowell diners, but the atmosphere is awesome and I just enjoy hanging out in there. The cheeseburger omelet is great, make sure they put pickles on it! The service is always ultra-fast with coffee free- flowing- like an eternal, rejuvenating spring- directly into my face! It's one of those places I'm going to miss when I leave and I'm collecting their root beer bottles now as memorabilia. It has made my life here better.

I have found breakfast nirvana. Irish Bennie, eggs Benedict with homemade corned beef hash instead of ham. Plus, in a life of eating potatoes I have never had hash browns that come even close to these. I don't know what they do but I'm crying that they do it so far from where I live.

I only order the special and I love it every time. The grill cook here is a master and seems like he would almost be more at home behind a hibachi grill.

This place is fantastic. I'm a student at Middlesex so I'm a few minutes away. Me and my friend discovered this place when we were driving around and we have become regulars. We walk in and they already know what we will get. I absolutely love the Gorham St omelette!! My friend always gets the middlesex st. We literally can't eat anywhere else when it comes to omelettes because we love these so much. Super friendly staff and great environment. I don't see myself ever leaving this place!

  • Dermot D.

Staff really rude asked for a steak medium- rare came well done, sent it back, waitress came back and told me it was medium rare according to the chef, and would I need it cooked more or less? I said pink/ red inside not grey please. I think the staff know that its a landmark place and always busy, so they do not really care about service too much, its take your order, throw the food down and give you the check at the same time. As a restaurant owner myself, I would never let my waitress hand the check at the same time as the food coming out, and I would check on the customer, from time to time, it felt like a big deal to get a refill on the coffee, by the time I got it, it was time to leave and I felt in the way. On the food end it was not bad, but not worth going out of your way for.

I'm new to the area and got New Year's day brunch here. All I can say is WOW! It's very cozy inside, but somehow holds a ton of people - everyone was very friendly and the service was super fast! I got the Irish Benny.. it was incredible and very filling. Home fries were so flavorful I didn't need ketchup.. and I usually put condiments on everything! Highly recommend!

Coffee was ok. Pancake was cold. Fruit was old. Server seemed she hates her job. Not even one single thank you or how is your meal from anyone at that place. Not going back anytime soon with ihop and Vicks being closer.

Good food, fast friendly service. They just started taking credit cards (not for tips though). Classic diner with added room.

Been coming here all my life food is great, I've gone from omelets to one egg with ham the ham is fantastic right off the bone big slice not the prepacked stuff to the pancake with sausages inside. My latest favorite is eggs bene or Irish eggs bene yum yum

  • Catherine W.

We enjoyed strawberries and whipped cream over french toast, and an omelette. Enjoyed the french toast more than the omelette (was not a fluffy omelette). Also ordered a fruit cup and a side of kielbasa which is served already cut up in slices. Good value for the meal, however it is a small-ish place so larger parties may have to wait longer for a table during peak times. We found out that you have to walk deeper into the restaurant to wait in line for the larger dining area (not in the area where you first walk in). The place now takes credit cards.Definitely a classic diner feel. There is a raised parking lot for patrons (lot is to the right of the restaurant.)

  • Anita R.

This was a great find! I hope to go back if I'm in the area again. The service was quick and friendly (but not overly or falsely or cutesy). Most especially the omelette was not one of those huge fluffy things. Mine had kielbasa, onion and cheese to which I added spinach (fresh); my friend's had corned beef hash. Both were excellent. The young man at the grill was quick and focused. When things slowed down a bit, he was pleasant to visit with. The potatoes were very tasty and the coffee was good. They do take a credit card (not Amex) for food, but not for the tip. The wallpaper border in the women's room is perfect for a diner, and don't miss the Route 66 clock ... All in all, a very worthwhile eating adventure.

Literally THE best place for breakfast. Never had a bad meal here. Pancakes are the best I've ever had, same goes for the omelettes. And the Hungry Owl is an absolute steal for just $10.

I enjoyed the delicious Irish Eggs benny and was so pleasantly surprised by the home fries! They were so delicious and crispy and the portions are enormous (but in a good way.) I loved the variety and would not hesitate to try something else on my next return!

I went to the Owl Diner with my husband and a friend of ours on a Sunday afternoon, their breakfast is great, big portions, extremely fast service and again the food is great! I had Wheat toast, scrambled eggs with ham and home fries which were outstanding I also had one blueberry pancake which was cooked to perfection and was wonderful! Prices were great as well. We live less than a mile from this place and it was the first time we ever went since we have been living in Lowell almost 8 years, Now it will be a local spot to get breakfast on the weekends! Now Im going this weekend my one of my girlfriends!!

Theres nothing like waking up hungover on Sunday morning and heading down to the diner. Their breakfast is always fast, fairly priced and delicious. Love everything from the omelets to their pancakes. They very cleverly name all of their omelets after we'll known streets in Lowell. The owl diner is truly a landmark in Lowell and I love going down there for the amazing food as well as the great local atmosphere.

  • Lola A.

The Owl Diner is a Lowell classic. I've eaten here since I was a kid, and one day my kids will eat here. It's one of those places. The food is always on point and the portions are quite large. The best items on the menu are the pancakes and the omelettes. This is not the place to come if you're looking for a nice, light breakfast. This is the place to come if you want good, greasy comfort food.

Found this place using the Yelp app on my phone. Saw all of the high ratings and took a shot. Cool setup. An old diner car with a huge added side room. I sat at the counter down by the AC to cool off. Very tight seating and even tighter behind the counter for the workers but they seem to do the dance around each other with ease. Guy next to me got served the steak and eggs and I commented "oh that looks good." He looked at me like I just sneezed on him or something. Hmm maybe not the friendliest places for a non local to go I assume. So I ignored the "pleasant" bald stuck up gentleman until he left 10 minutes later. Turns out it's not a local/non local thing because the nice outgoing man sitting further down started up an enjoyable conversation regarding traffic on Revere Beach. Now that that's out of the way let's actually talk about the diner. Waitress first kinda forgot about me but made up for it the rest of my breakfast and made me feel very welcomed. I did order the steak and eggs with a grilled english muffin. The man working the grill asked to confirm that it was cooked to my medium rare liking which it was. This guy was the most efficient and fast grill cooks I've seen in the long time. He kept his station clean as a whistle and got orders out as quickly as possible. There is another kitchen in the back that cooks for the side room and seemed to do some of the orders for the diner area as well. I watched the diner grill cook fix an egg benedict that had slipped off of the english muffin. This guy was ON THE BALL! It was a pleasure to watch him be so meticulous yet make sure to get the occasional pleasantries with patrons coming and going. Menu had a ton of different omelets to choose from and something that really piqued my interest. A grilled coffee roll! I didn't order it but I know if I go back it's at the top of my list. SIDE NOTE- I earned my good deed of the day. While going up to the register to pay my $13ish bill I asked the girl to break the 5 so I can tip out the waitress. She did but as I walked away I thought oh wait this is too much. I gave $4 to the waitress because breakfast should always be 30% IMO then walked to my car. After counting twice I realized that she gave me a 5 and a 1 with the 5 ones I asked for. I walked back in and gave it to the cashier. She thanked me for my honesty and I was on my way. She would of had to have paid it herself and I can't have that on my conscience. Mom would be proud! lol....

When I'm back in Lowell, we always have breakfast here. The best omelette in town. A good cup of coffee and crispy hash browns. The price is right, the waitresses are friendly....a tradition in Lowell.

Classic home diner for locals in town. Grew up coming to this spot. Not the best service but quick and really good breakfast. Love the special and the omelettes. Those chocolate pancakes is absolute love for a fat kid. This diner makes Lowell home

I work nights so meeting pals for breakfast is something I do often. I've been everywhere in the local area. Owl Diner is the best place for great homefries & a real thick ham steak-not crappy deli ham alot of places put on your plate. Coffee & service are pretty good too. When my kids are off from school on vacation they BEG me to take them here for breakfast. Check it out! PS-I've never had lunch here.

The Owl Diner is the only place where I will get omlettes anymore. I rush here whenever I'm home from school in Boston and have never been disappointed. The staff is always quick and friendly and the School St omelette is always perfection. Only downside is parking can sometimes be a little hard to come by. I also believe they recently started accepting credit cards.

The first time I went to Owl Diner, I ordered the wrong thing: french toast. It was blah white bread with fake syrup. I was sad, and thought there was no way Owl Diner would measure up to the reviews. Fast forward a few weeks, and I got dragged there, looked at the menu again...and realized that if they have a billion omelets, that's really what I should be getting. I was right. Or rather, I was wrong, and then I was right. The omelets are fantastic, and you should sub the Tom's Special potatoes, with bacon and cheese, for the hash browns. Also, no prefab crap here: not even shredded cheese from a bag! Also, if you've never had the New England classic that is grapenut custard, have some! It's warm and comforting and can totally be eaten for breakfast. Yes, it is made with cereal. The Owl Diner is one of the places that makes me love living in this city. Go visit and see why.

Consistently good standard diner breakfast. Nothing here is going to blow your mind, but it's reliable.

Feeling a little peckish during a road trip in the Lowell area... what to do, where to go? Ask Yelp, of course! We decided to check out this little diner based on past reviews. Loved the atmosphere and the service, but the food was just OK. I like salt on my eggs, but my scrambled eggs and hash browns were both insanely salty. Their "signature" ham sandwich was good. I've been to better diners, but its not a bad place overall.

Great omelettes. I am a fan of the Dutton St (with extra onions).

I've been a fan of Owl Diner for a few years now - ever since moving a few minutes away in Mill City. The atmosphere is great - just like you would want a diner to feel like. The food is good too! I can't get enough of the blueberry muffins. The only con I can think of (that isn't really a huge deal for me) is that it's cash only. Given how expensive card processing fees can get, I don't really blame them. Since it's a diner, I don't mind.

This is the Real Deal Diner, and perfect for breakfast. Just take note that cash is required. Stopped in based on the recommendations here, and had a short stack of Blueberry pancakes, along with OJ and coffee for $10. It is exactly what you dream of in a diner -- from atmosphere, to the help, to the food. Quality: - The coffee was reasonable. I like mine black, so quality matters. - The pancakes were great, with a medium quantity of blueberries. I've definitely had more berries per square inch of pancake, but felt like there were enough to not quibble. - And the OJ was full strength or likely even stronger. No corners cut here! Will definitely be back the next time that I visit Lowell.

I LOVE this diner. Old school diner with a local feel. I love how the omelets are named by Lowell streets. Its "seat yourself" and I've literally never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a table. My favorite omelet comes FULLY stuffed with cheese and corned beef hash, which is delicious and not offered at all restaurants!! Portions are big and prices are low-coffee is endless. What more could you want? Staff is friendly too! Every time I bring a new friend here they rant and rave about it. Definitely a go-to place for me and I highly recommend it!

This is definitely the breakfast place of choice for me. They have a wide variety of omelets, as well as the usual eggs/toast/ hash brown combos. I do think the omelets are the highlight of the menu, but I also really like the sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich on a bagel, paired with some hash browns and some orange juice. I also recommend the raisin bread french toast, which is delicious! The pancakes are also a solid choice. I prefer to sit in the front room/ diner car. The back room tends to get very noisy. For me, the food and service have always been consistent, and I will definitely be back again and again and again.

The was the best breakfast I have ever been served. This old dining car doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that scare you away. Sat right at the bar up front and watched them cook my omelet. Everything about this place is authentic, from the loud yelling employees to the 45 coats of paint on the walls. It is the perfect diner experience. CASH ONLY!

This place is a classic and consistently serves the best breakfast in the Lowell area. The prices and portions are very reasonable and the quality of product is about as good as it gets. Cannot say enough about this place. The service is excellent and I personally have visited the Owl Diner over 30x in the last 3 years and have not once had to wait for a table regardless of my party's size. If you do stop in: try the specials, especially the Steak-bomb omelet. It includes a ton of steak and is absolutely perfect for someone who eats more than the average person (like myself). Also try the grilled coffee roll because @ $2.50 it is a steal. Moist, tasty and like everything at the Owl, it's huge. Overall you have to stop in if your in the area. Have brought several friends there and none have been disappointed. A true gem.

I spent a few days in Lowell, and five minutes in the Owl Diner sums up the town pretty well. There is a worn kind of welcome, like smiling halfway and breaking eye contact a few moments too soon to smooth your apron. I heard that the Owl Diner has not changed much in a lifetime. Neither has Lowell. And that is something you may choose to celebrate or ignore. For me it was sadly sweet. My eggs were good.

It's not often you find a great diner in Massachusetts, I am not saying that they don't exist but there are not many. The Owl Diner is a great American diner. Great service and a great breakfast. The only thing I didn't like was the hash browns, they had a weird taste to them and were pretty salty. I am not much of a hash browns person anyway so it was no big deal. Cash only. But they have a nice big lot to park.

Be warned, no soda and no refills on almost all of the drinks. Substitutions can be made easily for anything, I ordered an omelet with broccoli, asparagus, onions, tomatoes, peppers and cheese. The food is great for a diner. This isn't 5 star quality food, and I wouldn't be happy if it was. Waitress was extremely nice, and our food was absolutely delicious, good quality, and cheap. Be warned, they get extremely busy, and I'm not surprised!

I've been going here for years, and the service was usually decent. Today however, my girlfriend and I received the worst service of our lives. It was made clear to us instantly that us walking in with half empty iced coffees was the worst decision we could have made. I understand, but we came in with the intention of buying over $25 worth d food, and just happened to have a drink with us. Not a single thank you. Received dirty looks and murmurs from the staff through our entire meal. When we went to the front to pay, we watched over five minutes pass as staff members walked by with their eyes down. When I finally said a polite "excuse me" to a woman behind the bar, I was flashed the most aggressive look. I asked for someone to ring us out when they had a minute. She glared and said "I'll see if someone's free" Are you kidding me? I'm trying to pay and even tip for our garbage service and I'm bothering you? The entire front staff saw us standing there. Never, ever going back. Sorry for bringing in an iced coffee - I didn't realize that voids your need for paying customers.

I have to admit that I like owls and when I saw the Owl Diner- well, I had to stop. I was pleasantly surprised. The menu has a huge variety of breakfast items, along with some home cooked goodies like meatloaf. I loved the omelette selection, and they were named after local streets. Our waitress was nice and attentive, and the place had a very homey atmosphere. You could tell the staff knew many of the locals. We also got a free side of beans which was different, but appreciated. I would definitely visit again as they had several egg dishes that I would love to try.

Officially my favorite breakfast place in Lowell. I love the nostalgic diner car with the retro appliances and juke boxes. The menu is large and diverse enough to make your decision plenty difficult, but if you're in a hurry just close your eyes and point to something - you'll probably end up liking it. I usually go for the Fletcher St. Omelette and am never disappointed- other than the fact that I can rarely finish the whole thing. Sitting at the counter is fun, but there's also booth seating and table seating in a separate dining room. You can park either on the street or in the lot next to the diner, which is a little tricky to find at first, but easy to get in and out of. The first time we went, we were asked if we'd like beans with our order - which is complimentary and an interesting addition to any order. We don't really get asked anymore, but it's still available if you're interested. There's one server I've had a few times that I'm not fond of because she forgets things, mixes up orders regularly, and spends more time flirting with the men in the room (score for the guys) than she does on making sure her guests have drinks on the table- but everyone else is great. If they got rid of that one waitress, I'd give them five stars- no offense to the girl of course- waitressing just isn't her thing.

If you can resist the urge to order their pancakes you'll probably have a great breakfast. I've eaten here about a dozen times now and the breakfast is solid. There is a great diner atmosphere and a the prices are great. The sercive is, well, diner service wadaya expect? I've had lunch here once and had a pretty standard turkey club and fries. Pros: Coffee, eggs and keilbasa Cons: place can get pretty crowded at peak breakfast times. Get there before 10am on a weekend and you should be okay. PASS

The Four Sisters Owl Diner is a Lowell landmark and a great little diner, which is open for breakfast and lunch. The front portion of the diner is housed in an old Worcester Lunch Car and attached to a building addition. As you enter, there's a lunch counter with stool seating and the hot grill area behind the counter. There's a separate dining room to the right. The breakfast menu offers the typical breakfast favorites including egg dishes, omelettes (named after Lowell streets), quiche, sandwiches, corned beef hash patties, pancakes, French toast, cereals, home fries, beans, meats, toast, muffins, danishes, fresh fruit, and coffee, juices & milk. The lunch menu offers soup, salads, sandwiches, dinner plates (meatloaf, chicken, steak, liver & onions) and cold drinks. During my field visit along Appleton Street, I stopped in for breakfast and sat at the lunch counter. The waitress offered me hot coffee ($1.50) and I ordered the Quiche ($6.95) with a fresh fruit cup. The Quiche was very heavy with lots of cheese and spinach (Florentine) and very tasty. The mixed fresh fruit cup was a refreshing accompaniment. I was given another refill of coffee during my visit. The service was good and efficient. I was in and out of here in 25 minutes, just in time to do another spot check of cars in the field.

Been going to the Owl since I met my wife (a lifelong Lowellelian) 16 years ago. I get the Dutton St (Hash and Cheese Omelet size portions, GREAT Homefries, good coffee, toast isn't burnt...Good food, decent prices (under $20 for breakfast for two), atmosphere is exactly what you'd want/expect from a diner...Owl Diner is the best breakfast in Lowell...PERIOD! Love this place. Eat here usually once a week whenever I can wake up early enough. Omelets are good and so are the home fries. The hash isn't as good as other places though. If you've never been GO! This will become your favorite breakfast spot.

The Owl diner rocks! The retro vibe is alive and well here. The vintage juke box, vintage tile, and old fashioned curtains really set the mood. The waitress was perfect. I have only been once so far, but the food was much better than average and that's a good thing. I ordered the ham and eggs for $7.50. The ham steak was exceptionally good. The flavor was very good and you could cut it with a fork. Really good homemade baked beans. The coffee is better than "just good". I highly reccomend this place to anyone jonesin' for a vintage diner. Definitely worth an hours ride.. I'm giving it 4 stars for now. I will update in a week or so to 5 if the quality continues.

This place is pretty good. I was here in the winter and they really need to fix some of the gaps in the windows. There was cold air leaking in everywhere so we moved our seat out of the car into the actual dining room. Much better. Great breakfast food and large pankcakes

Been back recently after a bit of an absence. The diner feels like its been cleaned up on the interior recently. Food is fresh, fast and good (was there for lunch). The chicken soup was excellent ans was the BLT....bacon was fresh and crisp. Was there during the week, no wait and full of regulars. The price is right....a bit of yesteryear (which is more than fine by me). A real treasure for the fair city of Lowell!

All I need to say is "Creamed Chipped Beef." Having moved to New England and away from my usual haunt of Philly, Jersey, and NYC diners, the Owl is definitely a real find with a real flair for breakfast done in true diner style. Having taken the family there twice now and tasted a good selection of their breakfast meals - including the creamed chipped beef (of course), pancakes, eggs benedict (with a chunk, not slice, of their own baked ham), scrambled eggs and home fries, the Irish Benny (corned beef hash instead of ham), and waffles - the Owl will be on our 'regular' list. I still want to try one of the "Street" omelets, so I will be back soon. The creamed chipped beef was good, more creamy than cheesy (PA Dutch vs. South Jersey diner style), and served on three (not 2) slices of toast. The Irish Benny was very good and the eggs poached just right. The pancakes and waffles have corn meal added to them (which must be a New England thing), but are perfectly good like that. The regular Eggs Benedict has that hunk of baked ham with the Hollandaise sauce that really has no equal in the area. True, it isn't the biggest place and you will need to wait during the Sunday morning crush (you definitely have to be a people person). Also, be very aware that the parking is much less than desirable. As another reviewer remarked, I suggest parking on the street, especially if you have a larger vehicle, as the lot is very tight - I can't imagine what it is like to try to park after a good snow storm. And, one other thing - bring CASH - no credit cards here (and really no problem as the best diners are usually just cash, just different from what we expect these days). Still, I am happy to have finally found a place with "real" creamed chipped beef and a true honest diner feel. If you are north of Boston looking for a decent breakfast, the Owl is the place to head in Lowell.

This is the diner to go to in Lowell. I've lived in this area my whole life and they've been a staple in this city. It's diner food, so that's what to expect. Pretty good all around, but nothing gourmet or fancy about it. I generally get an ommelet which comes with a good amount of home fries and toast. The pancakes are also pretty damn good. The service is decent, and I generally don't have to wait to have my coffee topped off. The one bad experience I had here was when I had the eggs florentine. The hollandaise sauce was delicious, but it gave me the worst stomach pains I've ever had for the rest of the day. Wouldn't get that again. But otherwise everything is good, and I'd recommend this place. Especially if you're looking for some sustainance after a night of drinking. They DO NOT take cards though, so bring cash. There's a convenience store right down the road with an ATM. Make sure you hit that up first if you need money.

Do you like to be around people when you eat breakfast? Alright, the Owl is for you! Sometimes when I feel like being in a THRONG this is where I wind up having breakfast. Alone, with a book. It's a fantastic spot to quietly sit and watch loads of people dine in good natured, bustling cheer. This is where townie excitement, everyday conversations, and friendly pleasantries are commonly shouted from one end of the dining car down to the other as neighbors or friends who haven't seen each other in some time ask after each others families, businesses, exchange other greetings. This kind of energy is the charm of the Owl, and although their food is more than passing good, their coffee worth a second cup, and their waitresses sweet as pie-- being able to go alone, grab a bite, and relax in that frenetic current is one of the great pleasures of the place.

  • Matt K.

The Owl pretty much rocks. But bring cash because that's all they take. Parking, on the other hand, pretty much sucks. There is a small parking lot next door which serves as an excellent opportunity to dent your car or lose a side mirror. I suggest parking somewhere on the street. Back to the food... I've only eaten there for breakfast but its excellent. My girlfriend orders Eggs Benedict almost everywhere we go. When it arrived here I thought she'd be upset. It came with this unusually thick piece of ham and looked... unconventional. Turned out she said it was one of the finest she's ever had locally! So there. A large variety of omelletes to choose from as well. Ambiance is great in the front diner car. When you get to the back/side room its nothing special to look at but a fine place to sit and eat. Service is good even when its busy, from my experience. A bit pricey for breakfast food, but not unreasonable. Probably the best place to get breakfast in the Lowell area despite the tragic parking situation.

This place is most defiantly in my Top 5 diners across the country. The place may look like a poop hole from the outside, but is super clean on the inside, also it is larger than it looks. What is great about this place is that the food is also pretty clean for a diner. Normally you would expect greasy food, but you don't get that here. It is a mix and match of cheap plus expensive, but you can walk out of the Owl stuffed with money left to burn. So far I have not had a problem getting a seat right away. Let us hope it stays that way.

I have a major weakness for, well lets face it.... a lot of things. Cold beer, playoff baseball, frozen custard... So when I say that I have a weakness for diners who rock a mean breakfast, it may not be all that impressive. But here at the Owl, I can still taste their pancakes now, and I haven't been there in almost fifteen years. The other day, I pulled out an old travel journal from a trip to Boston I took with my family back in 1995. Amongst all my notes about the sights of the Freedom Trail were these scribblings about a diner in Lowell. "The Owl was so good", I wrote. "The pancakes were better than Gramma's". If you knew my Gramma, you would know that is huge praise. I also wrote about the "awesome bacon and eggs" I had, and the fact that I was so full from breakfast that I could barely stand to eat a bite of my clam chowder I had for lunch in the city later that day. So here I sit in San Jose, California, craving pancakes at 8:11pm. I wonder when the next flight into Logan leaves Minetta...

"Yesterday's ambience with today's prices." Pricier than you'd expect, but well worth it. $4 for 1 egg served with toast! Yikes! But most of the omelettes ar less than $7 and are large enough to share. Plus you can get free beans and toast and country-style hashed potato chunks (not shreds) with the meal. We do that and add a huge blueberry pancake for 2.50, add 2 coffees (1.50 each) and walk out spending 12 bucks for a hearty breakfast. It's much cleaner inside than you'd expect from seeing the outside, and if you don't want to sit in the old historic part, there's the nice, fresh, cleaner and cooler addition room off to the right when you walk in. Friendly service and fantastic cooking. I'd go here no matter what town it was in. Only open for breakfast and lunch is the biggest negative. In addition to your bankroll, bring a fan. The old dining car part is H-O-T on a summer morning. People come here from all over town, so that's saying something. It's probably the nicest dining car in all of Lowell, in terms of overall food/clean/service rating.

why do people go to diners? 1) simple nostalgic breakfast that is served quickly 2) simple transaction, eggs, toast, protein, coffee 3) get that cozy sit down feeling with friends owls diner doesn't do any of those well. 1) it's never good when you have to WAIT for you server anywhere.. especially at a diner 2) they didn't do anything bad here.. it's pretty simple stuff.. no complaints really.. other than they are cash only.. cash only is stupid.. i don't care what you think or say.. this is 2011, not 1995. charge 25 cents more for everything on the menu.. i don't care. 3) the place is tiny, the tables were not leveled and it was grimy. look, owls diner isn't terrible, it's just not that great.. maybe for lowell standards. but when it comes to diners i've experienced much better. it's not 2 star bad.. but it's not 3 star decent.. i wish yelp had half star ratings!

I forget what's in it, but I do know that every time I've been to the Owl Diner I've ordered the Lawrence Street Omelette. Probably the only time you'd ever want something associated with Lawrence, MA in your mouth and goddamn is it delicious. My girlfriend always gets pancakes or french toast or something that's nowhere near as rad as an omelette and we always end up swapping plates about halfway through. She's lucky I'm such a nice guy, well that and everything on the non-omelette menu tastes like heaven. Just wish it were open beyond 3 or 4 pm, I could go for some Owl Diner at 3am.

I love Owl Diner! We always come on the weekends and never have to wait for a table which makes this place even better. I am a huge fan of the bacon egg and cheese bagel sandwich with home fries but their chocolate chip pancakes are the best we've ever had! The best diner in the area!

Ugh, what is the big fuss?? No parking, ever. Cash only. Always crowded. Service, meh. Food quality, not that great. At least they have tabasco sauce if you ask for it. I've been here three times, and I still can't get into it. I'd rather go someplace else for my diner fix.

I attended college in Worcester, the home of the Worcester Lunch Box Car Co. which rolled out diner after diner across the country. About a dozen diners remain in that city, with a handful more across the state. The Owl Diner with its namesake neon owl out front is called the Four Sisters Diner these days, since the current owners bought the joint in 1982. The last two times I've visited Lowell I stopped at the Owl for lunch. I'll echo everyone else that the omelettes are made with fresh ingredients (I like the Woburn--mushrooms, spinach, and swiss cheese) and the waitresses are friends.

The owl diner serves delicous breakfast! My sisters and I came in and they seated us. However, they have slow service since it gets so busy. Maybe they should hire more females (the only workers). For the price, they give HUGE portions! I could't finish my meal. My older sis order the Pawtucket st omelete (ham onion cheese), I had a I forgot what it's called but it was slices of potatoes with cheese and bacon and my little sis had a waffle special (strawberries & whipped cream). It was all delicious and fresh.

I've been to the Owl Diner more times than I count. It's a real Worcester style diner complete with diner booths and counter. It can get really busy during Sunday and Saturday mornings which was when I used to go. Even when it is really busy, you don't wait very long, because they get you your food quick. Almost immediately when you sit down a waitress brings some coffee over. They are generous with the coffee refills and make sure you have plenty of coffee. I always leave wired from Owl Diner. One of the highlights of their menu is the banana split waffles. Its waffles topped with bananas, whipped cream, and chocolate chips. Sometimes I get the french toast, which can be a little eggy but still pretty good. I usually top it off with some home fries and bacon. Their generous portions always leave you stuffed. The only reason I'm not giving the Owl Diner five stars is because from time to time the food didn't live up to their reputation. If you're looking for a hearty breakfast you can't beat Owl Diner.

Although I must say that I hate going to this part of the city, there's no parking and whenever you actually get in and through the line and masses of people standing around waiting to be seated you will find some of the BEST breakfast food you've tasted in a long time. Its very traditional style breakfast and although it might be a little pricey I can't help but love it! My mom and aunts all ate here back in their days of late nights and early morning breakfast before going to pass out and now I can admit I've done the same. Everyone in the area knows the owl diner and no one can possibly say they don't have at least one or two good memories here with good friends or family! They're always friendly and always good service! If you're looking for breakfast no matter what day of the week you will find this place full but again totally worth it!

Everything a diner should be. Good food, hot coffee, laid back atmosphere and housed in a funky building - an old dining car. Definitely a good place to relax over breakfast on a weekend morning, and pick from the standard diner fare like pancakes, eggs and waffles. Bring cash and a calculator, though, because they don't take plastic and they don't add the bill. (We actually had to run down the street to an ATM to pay for our food.)

  • Grant B.

The best diner in Massachusetts in my opinion... Good food at good prices in a classic diner atmosphere. Their ham steaks are the best I have had anywhere, and they even serve up a solid rendition of my old fave, cream chipped beef on toast! I make a point of bringing out of town friends here for breakfast and everyone seems to have enjoyed it quite a bit.

Man, if I had time to go here for breakfast every day you can rest assured I would! Great stuff, great service and prices. The only kick in the nuts is they don't accept credit cards and I keep forgetting so it's always a big effing hassle when the bill comes.

A great little place to have breakfast Sunday mornings with your loved one or friends. The staff is great and the egg omelets even more. I love the belgium waffle with strawberry and whip cream. They only except cash though, so be prepared.

The Owl Diner has to be one of my favorite places for breakfast. They have great omelets.. all of which are named after streets in Lowell. I suggest the Market St. which is the Spinach and Feta one. It's a small hole in the wall place that gets packed on weekend mornings, though I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes to get a seat. A bunch of my friends go there after a night of drinking or just to catch up with friends from high school. If you're around the Lowell area, you should defiantly make a stop here for some breakfast.

classic diner food, just greasy enough to be good local flavor {customers} is always interesting too

Best diner in downtown Lowell. Great menu - lots of choices and flexibility, for example, you can order one pancake. Great omelet selection. Friendly, patient staff. Parking available in the parking lot.

This is a great old fashioned diner. If you love breakfast food, this is the place for you. It's not the most modern looking building you've ever seen, but the food is good, the place is clean and the people are real. You may meet a campaigning politician or get interviewed by a newspaper reporter. Their both always there looking for people to talk to.

believe it or not it was my first time here and i love breakfast and was expecting a great breakfast because of its reputation,i was somewhat disapointed, first off the glass i was drinking out of had a strange odor coming out of it,dont know if it was the glass or the ice(yes i had soda with my breakfast, not coffee, because i only drink ice coffee not hot) the scrambled eggs did not actually appear to be scrambled and fluffy, they looked as if they had been cooked as an omelett, then cut up with a knife, the bacon which i requested crispy, did come out perfectly crispy,no fat bubbles, without being burnt, but once again ,had a strange odor coming from them, the smell of bacon is one of the most wonderful smells in the universe, but this bacon somehow magically didnt smell like bacon, yes it tasted like it and i dont doubt it was real bacon but i have noidea wre the smell came from and no i dont have a sensitive nose and never have noticed strange smells coming from my food or glass before

I never feel completely home until I visit Owl Diner. The wait staff is everything you would want in a hole-in-the wall dive and the coffee is so bad it's great. All the omelet's are named after streets in Lowell...I like the Nesmith. Great joint in a great city.

This place is what a diner should be. i've only been for breakfast but i agree with all the other posts. i have to give a shout out to the dutton st. omelet. seriously, that thing should never have been invented much less made, but i'm sure glad someone had the balls to put it on a menu! an omelet filled with corned beef hash, oh yeah, that's right. only negative is that on more than one occasion, half my home fries have been scorched and the other half uncooked. oh and don't be deterred by the crowds on the weekend, they get you seated and fed tout d'suite. i still don't understand how they can do it so quickly.

Owl Diner is the best diner I have been to in Lowell. However, having dined at some of the best diners around, I do have high standards. I did enjoy the atmosphere and the salty, down-home character of my waitress. I had a hash omelet with raisin toast and enjoyed it. I was surcharged $0.50 for raisin toast without prior notification, however, which was slightly annoying. Also, the waitress forgot to add up the check but being a CPA I was able to calculate it in my head. This restaurant does not accept credit cards (!) and I had to walk over to a local convenience store to withdraw cash. There seemed to be a lot of regulars at the diner that day, and from experience a diner with a lot of regulars is usually a good diner. It adds to the ambiance in my opinion. The restaurant appeared clean (bathroom included) despite the construction going on in front of the building. May have been 5 stars if the waitress was not so slow on my water refills. I did think it was funny when I moved my glass to the outside of the table to signify that I needed a refill, and she called me a "mover."

Very good breakfast...the omelettes are outstanding. Just on the worst street in Lowell. Take a right at the two hookers on the corner of Appleton, straight passed the burning 87 Escort, and a left at Sticky Pete the Crack dealer, and your there! It is old Lowell at its finest, its just too bad its in the middle of ShittsVille. Luckily, LPD has a heavy presence down here almost all the time
