Outstanding food! We had breakfast: omelettes. Home fries were fabulous, coffee was fresh. Service could have been a little better since although they were busy, they were not "slammed". Needed to ask multiple times for coffee refills. No setups upon being seated and needed to ask for that too, especially to stir cream/sugar in coffee! Waitress apologized several times but still was absent for the most part. If you want good Sunday morning breakfast, go here. If you want great service, not so much but realize your choice.

My friend and I were actually looking to have breakfast at a restaurant down the street but they stopped serving breakfast so we came to Pumpernickels as our plan B. (Pumpernickles stops serving breakfast at 11:30) When we sat down, we were instantly greeted by our friendly waitress. The decor was bright and cheery, though it could use a bit more natural light. Coffee was better than I expected, though it wasn't gourmet. We both ordered the pumpernickel special... 2 pancakes, potatoes, an egg, Bacon and sausage. At $5.95 the price was very reasonable. We also shared a side order of their spicy Portuguese sausage hash. The meal came super fast and though it didn't blow our minds, it did the trick. As has been mentioned by a previous reviewer, the bathrooms could use some attention, but in all, we thought it was ok. Would we come back? Maybe... but I wouldn't plan my weekend around it.

We love going here for breakfasts. My husband loves the corned beef hash here.

O ye of grumpy disposition, dare not negatively review Pumpernickel's! This restaurant is a time-travel channel back to a better era, where older waitresses call you "honey" and constantly check to see if you want more coffee. My girlfriend and I first went here 3 years ago because I noted "pumpkin pancakes" on a whiteboard by the door on a morning photo safari to scenic Fairhaven docks. I adore anything with pumpkin. The idea of pumpkin pancakes triggered every endorphin in my brain and enzyme in my digestive system. I rushed back to our sailboat at Pope's Island, woke my sleeping girlfriend, and together we dashed to pancake prom This is breakfast heaven. They'll cheerfully make whatever variant of the menu you want. Omelets, eggs, potatoes, toast, meats, toasts, pancakes - we fantasize returns in the winter, when our boat is stored on land, and our springtime return is like the dogwood in bloom. For old-fashioned foodies who just want breakfast the way you remembered it years ago, go to Pumpernickels, check your diet at the door - and ENJOY!

We've eaten here twice in the last month - Friday nights, 2 weeks apart. Most locals don't realize the place serves dinner - no surprise that one of the yelpers below found it empty. Empty, in this case, was not a warning sign. Homey appearance - kinda 70's country colonial. Meh - who cares about decor when you're out with friends, looking for an easy going, good meal and a place to chat for a while? Everything was clean...including bathrooms. Just low watt light bulbs! On our first visit, 4 of us were seated in the empty one of the 2 dining rooms. We appreciated not being placed on top of other diners when there was plenty of room to spread us out. We had 3 of the specials and 1 regular menu item. Caciola (sp...). 2 Fish & Chips and I (being the high maintenance one) ordered a broiled fish filet w/ lots of veges (can't remember what the official name was.) We all tasted each others' dishes. Not one complaint. Food was hot, well flavored/seasoned and served in a reasonable amount of time. This place is BYOB...and the waitress (who is also manager - maybe even part owner) was quick to bring glasses and open our wine. She even poured when she noticed that a glass was getting low. Our bellies were happy and we felt like Mom was taking care of us. It was all good. I didn't mention the FRESH BAKED warm bread that came to the table w/ a dish of roasted garlic cloves swimming is a nice quality olive oil... Two weeks later, on the heels of this low stress, tasty meal, the 2 of us returned for another Friday night dinner. Nice window alcove table. Same attentive, informative waitress. I ordered a "pan roasted" fish filet (something thick and white like haddock or cod) w/ tomatoes, spinach and cheese. My husband ordered fish and chips again. Ahem...ummm...yeaaah...hate to say it...not. so. much. Our entrees took FOREVER i.e. 45 mins. We went through a couple of baskets of bread and olive oil amidst apologies from the waitress "it takes a few extra minutes to cook the fish.' When the entrees came, my filet was coolish and RAW in more than just the middle. When the waitress asked "How is every thing, I nicely but frankly told this very NICE waitress that I was very disappointed and why. At first she said the chef was rushing it because she knew we were becoming impatient. I looked at her and said, "You and I both know how to cook fish - this is not our first rodeo - this is a real disappointment." She then said you're right - this isn't our usual chef. She took it off the bill without needing to be asked to do so. Kudos to her for being truthful when I called her on it. The chef was 5 feet away listening to the conversation. She had nothing to say for herself. We'll give dinner there ONE more try - I'll let you know if 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Maybe the regular chef will be back. I'm hopeful!

Yuck! Double Yuck! Went in for what we thought would be a quaint lunch and from the name and outside we were sure it would be a trendy, gourmet home town type spot. WRONG. In spite of the handwritten "specials" and carefully written menu, the restaurant was a sitcom of BAD food, a way-to-gabby waitress w/ her greasy looking hubby running the kitchen. The lights and air, for whatever reason, were not turned on, and the restaurant inside was stuffy, gloomy, and smelled like my gramma's closet. Yuck! Why didn't we get up and just walk out? ummmm, cuz we were greeted so sweetly and rushed to our seats. Lunch plate was served w/ stale, wet potato chips, our sandwiches were bland, old, and the tomato and lettuce on the buns were moldy and slimy. Top it off, the bathroom was FILTHY and the light didn't even turn on (obviously to hide the mess). Soooo, nice doesn't cut it, in spite of the cool, seaport surrounds on the outside (The store across the street, Europa, however, is worth visiting w/ lots of unusual items and a great shoe selection).

Really disappointed. Stopped in for dinner on a Friday and was shocked at the lack of people in the restaurant. Though the wait staff was pleasant, our overall experience was poor. Once we received our proper order (the waiter brought us the wrong order initially), we decided that the food was mediocre as we picked at it because the mood had been set toward the beginning of our experience when some kind of bug came to our table with the bread basket. We had a hard time looking past it.

Stopped for quick bite and was very duprised at the friendly service. Food was great and atmosphere was charming. The prices were very fair. I will come back for sure
