Top notch food *FOR* the area. Take that as you will - deserves the stars compared to the other options. Their food isn't spicy though!

This is my favorite Thai food in the area. Very reasonably priced. The restaurant has an informal atmosphere and very friendly people behind the counter. It's all self service, so it's a great place to grab a quick meal. I ordered delivery from here and was not impressed by the service- the food was delicious, but it took almost 2 hours to get to me. I would eat in or take out from here again, but I'm not sure about delivery.

Rod Dee is part of a group of Thai restaurants which I've come to absolutely LOVE over the past 10 years. Easily the best Thai food I've ever had. CLEAN, FRESH tasting, sauced just enough--perfect. Can't say enough about the food. This particular location has counter service instead of table service, which makes it a bit more casual, and sometimes, it's nice to avoid the waiter interactions. Free tea! Try the pad thai-you will not be disappointed!

Had the drunken noodles with tofu, it was pretty good. Had bok choy which I do not en-joy..bummer because it was not listed on the ingredients. Would have passed so it didn't go to waste. Flavor was ok, not quite as spicy as I would have liked, but still good. Friendly service which is always a plus. Self serve drinks, love that. Will go back for sure.

This chain is a lot nicer than the other Rod Dee's. It looks and feels cleaner inside. Food is just as delicious as the other Rod Dee's. Very fresh and comes out fast and hot. Perfect for take-outs and casual dine-ins.

This place is perfect for students who want great Thai food at a very reasonable price. I've only eaten in, and the food comes pretty fast and in large portions. The pad Thai is always good, but my favorite is the pad kee mau. The noodles are so moist and flavorful!! Remember to bring cash though because they don't take credit. I also wish they had some different sauces available. They don't have sriracha sauce there, which is surprising.

Mmm simple delicious American style Thai food. Not many authentic Thai places here but very resonable, delish and clean. Service could be better with less attitude & more smiles but...

Trust me, you want the Dee. Its my go-to takeout spot, their noodle dishes are great. The portions are generous but don't feel particularly greasy, which is refreshing. Food is ready in no time and its a good deal. The interior isn't particularly nice, but I can live with it. They can also get backed up at dinner.

Very authentic compared to what I ate during two prior trips to Thailand. Huge selection and wide variety of dishes--it's rare that I see a Thai restaurant menu with a lot of dishes I don't recognize! I ordered the spicy crispy chicken, which wasn't too spicy for me (but I have to warn you that I have a very high spice tolerance). The flavor of the chicken was outstanding, and it surprisingly wasn't overly greasy, like most fried food. There were red and green peppers as well as Thai basil mixed with rice in the dish, which popped their flavors in my mouth. Mmm, yummy. I couldn't resist the dessert special, which was banana sticky rice wrapped in a banana leaf. OMG. Exactly like the best sweet sticky rice I've had in Thailand. So, so good. I will be dreaming of this. There was free water with styrofoam and plastic cups, which I consumed copiously to alleviate the mild burning of my mouth from the crispy chicken. The service was fast, friendly, and efficient. This place is a bit of a trek from my neck of the woods, but I will definitely return. As everyone has noted, Rod Dee accepts cash payment only.

I ordered pick up for a dinner with a group of 5 others. The staff was very nice, but the restaurant itself has a very limited delivery service area. For about $50, we had enough food for the six of us, so not too bad on the price/value ratio. The food itself was good, but nothing that I would say I can't get at most other Thai restaurants though.

This is easily my favorite Thai place around Boston. It's super casual and cheap, but the food is unbelievable. I love the coconut curry dishes, which actually have a nice kick to them. Consistently incredible!

If you are looking for cheap, authentic-tasting Thai food in an informal setting, this is your spot. I went here with one of my friends on a Saturday night; it was busy, but we were still able to find a table fairly easily. There are so many options available to choose from that it took my friend and me a few minutes to digest the entire menu. I ordered the Pad Khee Mao vegetarian with tofu. You order at the counter and then take a seat. Within five minutes, my food had already come to the table. The noodles were fat and flavorful and the tofu texture was perfect, with a lot of flavor on the slightly crispy outside with a chewy center. The one thing I didn't enjoy about my dish was the vegetables; I felt that they were not particularly fresh and were slightly undercooked. I've additionally tried the fried rice and basil tofu; I've been satisfied with my meal each time. I personally like Spice and 9 Tastes in the Square a bit more because of the convenience and ambiance, but Rod Dee is a great change of pace for my usual Thai spots. TIP: Cash only. There is an ATM machine inside, but bring cash to save yourself the trouble.

It's yummy, it's cheap, and it's right around the corner. So yea, I'm there a lot. I suppose ordering over the phone can be a little chaotic sometimes, but the folks who work there are friendly and obviously trying really hard. Cash only - but they have an ATM, so what do I care?

Amazing! I haven't had Thai food this good since I was in Thailand. This place is seriously authentic, and has a very warm, friendly, and family feel to it. The staff are so nice and I love the complimentary hot tea. Even the coloring scheme in the restaurant is authentic - gold is the King's color and baby blue is the Queen's. I can't get enough of this place.

  • Marina G.

The food has been perfection every time. Custom ordered, simple orders, and from friendly people every time. I am giving them 5 stars though because when I ordered Pad Thai which normally comes with shrimp with NO SHRIMP because I am allergic, they kindly checked whether I needed the food to be made with freshly washed pans and utensils with special sauce made from scratch, and whether I was allergic to just shrimp or all shellfish. I would give them 6 stars if I could for great food and their kindness!!

  • Helen S.

The food is good at a decent price, but WOW it was really the customer service that blew my mind. It may seem fast-paced and informal, but that means you get your food FAST. How the heck do those ladies know who's food is whose, especially when they didn't even take the order?? Seating and utensils are self-serve, which I personally enjoy because, again, it's faster. Despite all that, we did not feel like we had to rush through our meal. PLUS... I accidentally left my phone there one night and didn't go back until the next day. The restaurant owner made sure the phone was mine by having me unlock it there, AND THEY CHARGED MY PHONE OVERNIGHT because the battery was dying and they wanted to make sure they could answer if someone called for it!!! It is the most effort I have ever seen a restaurant owner ever make for a lost cell phone, and I lose my cell phone quite often! I realize that this may have biased my review a bit, but customer service sometimes really makes or breaks a place... And I will be returning again and again for this reason!

Best pad Thai in Boston! Great food. Solid price. Good local spot for Thai. Check this place out!

This is our go to Thai place. It's cheap, it is really good, and the portions are HUGE. The Pad Thai is excellent with your choice of chicken or shrimp. Panang curry has just about enough heat, and the Pad Se Ew is just good. My kids love the dumplings and the chicken on stick (ie Chicken Satay). I really like their sweet a Thai tea as well. Cash only though

I have been to this restaurant a handful of times and enjoyed it up until last week. I must say the customer service has sloped downward. The woman behind the counter, the reason I always went back in the past, as she was always so nice, and the food is good, was not so nice this time. I understand we have our days and we are only human. I did not like her lack of patience when I arrived and wanted to read the menu first before ordering. She huffed. Then she asked me my name, I think that is what she was asking me, she was talking under her breath, I told her my name, she repeated it wrong, so then I wasn't sure if she was asking me what my name was so, I said, "are you asking me what my name is?" She said "yes", I told it to her again, politely. She then turned around still holding onto my cash and spoke to one of her colleagues in her native language, something negative due to the looks. Then when my order was ready the woman behind the counter, back towards the restaurant spoke to the other two women again in their native language, she said my name very loud to them and they had a good laugh. Then one them walked over to me where I was sitting at a table for my take out order, repeated what my order was, I said thank you and left. I won't be going back there again unless they change ownership and the help.

In the olden days, one had to trek over to Brookline for this delicious Dee-light! That was back when ordering pad thai was hip and exotic but not to us since we were that cool with ethnic food. Ah, the 20s. Now that they have been in the 'hood for a few years and I am older and don't give a shit, I CAN.NOT.STAY.AWAY from the seafood pad se ew. Every. single. time. I will spend some solid time reading the menu (at home instead of watching TV, on the T instead of a book), and make plans to try them all. But no. It's always back to the Pad se ew with seafood. The wide sticky noodles are sweet, salty and spicy (I add my own for the additional flavor layer) with tender chinese broccoli. Add a complimentary cup of hot Thai tea, and this inexpensive little meal hits that miserable, need-winter-to-be-over, spot and fills my tummy and my heart with warmth. I just saw their sign for thai tea ice cream. Oh hello!

  • Nikki B.

We had the pad kee mao, coconut chicken soup, and papaya salad. Pad kee Mao was decent, soup was too sweet for my taste, and the papaya salad - too salty. Maybe it was just a bad day.

  • Lynn C.

Big portions, decent pricing and great food. Indonesian rice was delish along with pad see ew and chicken pad Thai. I ordered the Kao Moo Dang and was not impressed because the roasted pork looked like it was reheated. There was a layer of thick pale oil in between the layers . The crispy pork was dry and seemed old, also a reheated item. The only tasty part of was that dish was the sausage.

  • Erica I.

I am obsessed with Rod Dee!! The Pad See Ew and the Pad Thai with crispy chicken is the best. Their fried spring rolls are pretty amazing too. Cash only, and limited seating but stopping to get cash back at CVS across the street isn't stopping me from rating them 5 stars, they deserve it!

  • Stephanie L.

Regular spot for my friends and fellow coworkers from a neighboring restaurant. It's cash only, but there's an ATM inside and the prices are very reasonable, especially given the large portion size. I always leave content or at least with lunch for tomorrow. Mostly self service with drinks, silverware and busing your own table, but the staff are all friendly and welcoming. The wait for your meal is not long until a server arrives with consistently delicious dishes. I have a Thai friend who claims this is legit, and I have seen other Thai families eating there upon every visit. Authentic food is always a plus!

    (5)
  • Kaitlin M.

The service here is terrible. They have screwed up phone to go orders twice for us. While the food is good the convenience of take out is really not convenient at all here. We wont be back

    (2)
  • R S.

I absolutely love this place. The food is authentic and delicious, and the portions are large. I eat here probably twice per month. Try the Kai Rachada special and the mango sticky rice! Note: cash only.

  • Majid K.

I'm not sure why this place gets 4 stars. Perhaps they paid Yelp to remove the bad reviews. We ordered 4 dishes one of them was unrecognizable, the 2nd was smothered with too much sauce and the other 2 were average.

    (2)
  • Jonathan L.

The owner donated free food to feed 70(!!) students and teachers, just because he's a nice guy. And it was delicious!! He could have just given a bunch of rice and noodles, but no, he donated multiple real (curried, sauteed, tempura'd) dishes with plenty of yummy veggies, plus pad thai, rice and extra sauces. So you really can have your Thai and eat it too because you are supporting a good person AND getting great food!

  • Tatum L.

Pad Thai was pretty good, but I like sugar spice pad Thai better. I love drunken noodles here. Rod dee is good mediocre Thai food. I come here a lot but it's not the most outstanding food. Apps are a little overpriced. Entrees are fair price. I will keep coming back because I like it.

  • Josh K.

I eat here as often as I can. In terms of cheap eats I don't think it gets much better than Rod Dee. I've had Kai Rachada, Indonesian fried rice, curry puffs, scallion pancakes, scallion dumplings, pik pow fried rice, pineapple fried rice, kao soi, and more. My favorite dish here is Indonesian fried rice, which is breaded fried chicken (always amazing), hot peppers (not too hot, especially if you're into spice), and a fried egg on top (this can be hit or miss, when they get it right it's perfectly gooey). I've never had a bad meal here; would recommend to anyone who likes Thai food. The most negative thing I can say about this place is that at times the line becomes quite long and you may wait 20 or more minutes to have your order taken.

    (5)
  • Maria R.

Pretty solid Thai option if you live in Cambridge. Their pad thai is particularly good. Also, very accommodating of vegetarians. They deliver!

    (4)
  • Mariana H.

Food is mediocre which is to expect because this place is more like a fast food thai restaurant. Ordered pad thai and it tasted ok but it was way too salty. No nuts and only few bean sprouts. Very disappointed!

  • Simon L.

Wonderfully fresh and creamy red coconut curry with tender chicken. Green peppers, basil, shredded bamboo. Thick, rich and spicy, made not for the faint of heart. The small portion over rice, white or brown for under $7 is maybe the steal of the century and probably enough for two - I finished mine but that's just me. Friendly service with food delivered to your table and a cash only register. Fresh, clean and bright interior. Need i say its basically over a red line stop? Huge menu, the specials of the day include a side of soup! Excellent value - there's even sports on the tube. Extremely polite and gracious spot. The mango fried rice and Chow fun hoodles ordered by the table next to me were said to be and appeared to be amazing: that's what I'm ordering next time around!

  • Cindy K.

I like this place. My cousin recommended it to me once. The portions are great and the prices are great. Basically I order one meal and get 3 meals out of it. No joke. I've tried their pra ka pow and their whole fish. Both delish and Thai Iced tea is a nice treat as well.

    (4)
  • Jennifer C.

Delicious. I ordered a pad see yew (pork) and it came within 5 minutes. The food was flavorful, hot, and sweet and salty to the right degree. The rice noodles were also chewy and not too soft. Veggies on the plate was crunchy. The Thai milk tea was also really good --- not overly sweet with heavy tea taste. Love it!

  • Santiago G.

Rod Dee is a solid four stars considering the price. The food is very good. I have ordered Panang Curry at several different Thai places so I can say that Rod Dee makes a quite good, authentic Panang Curry. The food is prepared relatively quickly and is brought to your table. However, there are a two issues that made me decide to give four instead of five stars. Rod Dee does not accept credit cards, you have to pay in cash. (I don't know about other people but I don't really like fattening up my wallet with lots of coins) The second sticking point revolves around the fact that they do not serve you water. They have a small counter with a water dispenser and small cups; you end up going a lot here, especially if you order spicy food. If you are around Porter Square, are craving Thai, and not too picky about fanciness, check out Rod Dee Thai. You will not be disappointed.

  • Jake S.

Average. Decent food. Great value for buck. Authentic. And portions are good; but I understand why they are so cheap - meat/protein to starch/rice/noodle ratio is quite low. But solid all around thai if u are in the area.

  • Alan E.

Indonesian Fried Rice. Those three words will change the way you view dinner on those nights where you are too tired to cook but want something satisfying. Rod Dee is ultimate comfort food. I can't speak to its authenticity but I will gladly praise its taste. The only problem with Rod Dee? I have too many favorites and each visit is a painful choice.

If you want some yummy, authentic, cheap, and fast Thai food, than you've come to the right place! Rod Dee has a few locations around the city, and this one is just as good as the rest. As I've said for their other locations, keep the following in mind when you go: - The restaurants themselves sort of resemble nicer/bigger versions of take-out restaurants. They always have a bright coat of paint on the walls and simple seating ranging for small to big parties. - It's a seat yourself kind of joint, and seats fill up fast during prime time hours. Plan accordingly! - You order and pay for your food at the counter, and they'll deliver your food hot to your table. Just make sure to grab your own utensils and napkins from the counter. - This is a cash only place, but they do have an ATM located inside if you forget to get some of that mystical green stuff. - You are responsible for clearing your own dishes at the end of the meal, so don't just leave them on your table. Some stand-outs for food thus far have been their yellow curry, crispy chicken, pad thai, and Indonesian Fried Rice. Be careful what you order if you like your flavors more subdued though, because their spicier dishes pack a mean punch!

My Tom Yum seafood noodle soup smelled so bad, my boyfriend nicknamed it Liquid Feet! On a positive note, they didn't skimp on the noodles, bean sprouts, shrimp, fish balls, and squid. My Thai iced tea was decent. My boyfriend hated his Larb Gai dish: it was overpowered with lime and he even cracked his tooth on something in the ground chicken (a bone, maybe?)! He nicknamed it Tooth Cracker, poor guy. Please keep in mind that we often eat Thai and we've enjoyed these dishes MANY times elsewhere. Wow. After reading all of the rave reviews here, I'm agreeing with Kelly W. and wondering if we even ate at the same place??? Yelpers keep gushing about how authentic Rod Dee is, so now I'm questioning everything I know about Thai cuisine. If THIS is authentic, I am saddened. Or maybe I just need to go back and try the fried rice or something.

OK I just ordered from roddee in cambridge - $25 for a pad thai and a curry! these guys have just inflated their prices! crazy.

Terribly disappointing. Sticky rice that is served shaped like a small brick, and is as hard as one, too. Uneven flavors, either too much sweet, or too much fish sauce. And so on.... NY, London, Portland all have Thai restaurants that hit the mark, wish there was one in Boston.

Seems like I stop by here on a yearly basis (which is a lot considering I don't live here)! Somehow Rod Dee pulls of a modern interior while maintaining a very authentic Thai vibe. On my first visit, I played it safe with their Pad Thai, and most recently I tried their Indonesian Fried Rice. Both were ordered as take-out, don't forget that this place is cash-only! The wait wasn't too long, and we were all excited to dig into our food as soon as we got home! The Pad Thai is what you would expect at most places, the Indonesian Fried Rice was a sweet fried rice (with meat) TOPPED with fried chicken and a fried egg! It definitely hit the spot on a cold hungry summer night. My friends ordered the Star Noodle which is kind of like Pad Thai with tons more meat/veggies packed in. They loved it! :)

  • Annette N.

I love the unlimited self-serve hot Thai tea. Five stars for that alone ! I always get the spicy crispy chicken with basil leaves. Yummy. I eat every speck. I was introduced to Rod Dee at their Brookline location by a beautiful Thai woman I was crushing on around the year 2000 (one of only two female crushes in my life), and she said it was the best dish there. I have stuck to that, for sentimental reasons I suppose. So I really can't tell you any more than that. But everyone eating here always looks happy. Word to the wise--brown rice is another option available here besides usual white rice. (No this is not a sexual joke.)

Let's start by saying I spent last winter in Southern Thailand working for a yoga school. Authentic, delicious, cheap Thai food is still fresh in my culinary memory, and that's why Rod Dee is my favorite Thai place in Boston so far (I've only been here 2 months). Thai food is supposed to be cheap. Not cheap as in unhealthy, tasteless, but quick, inexpensive yet still delicious and filling. Rod Dee pulls that off. There are of course downsides to dining cheap. If you like being waited on by a server, this isn't your place. If you go with a big group you might have to fight off challengers for a table. Or share one. None of that discourages someone eagerly seeking great Thai food, but it could deter someone in a specific situation, like a date. I've tried four of five different things so far, and everything's been good. Once or twice my taste buds were seriously impressed (Drunken Noodles and Rod Dee Noodles), but everything has met my high standards for Thai food. PLUS a meal at Rod Dee will consistently cost less than $10. I'll say it again, Thai food should not be expensive to be delicious.

They fixed the overheating issue. Tom Yum (not boodle) soup + side of white rice is absolutely incredible!!! My boyfriend loves the pineapple fried rice and the mango fried rice. If im under the weather the thai chicken soup with noodles makes me feel warm and happy! Only downside, is its cash only and i rarely carry cash so i have to go to the ATM first. I come here about 2x a month or more in the winter and it is always EXCELLENT.

My love for the Rod Dee name lives on. Try this place with my dear friend. Sat at the window seats and saw that people were coming in to just buy the thai ice tea. Friend finally got there and was hungry af. Shuffle to the ordering station and got myself the Thai Boat Noodle Soup and Thai Ice Tea. BAM cheap af. Friend went to get cash from BOA outside, and my food arrived before she even come back. Theory is they have a thai wizard in the back ground cranking out these food ~ Politely wait for friend order to arrive before I eat my soup. Thank goodness her Crispy Chix Pad Thai didn't take long either. Dig in! OH Buddha... it was so good. So much depth and flavor in this rich dark broth. Spice was on point. Have a stupid sore bc I bit my tongue so mouth was literally in pain as I was eating it but IDGAF so amazingly good. Crunchy fried pork rind add the perfect balance to the silky noodle. Friend finish Pad thai in like 5 mins because it was also bomb. Thai tea was good thai tea. Anyways it's 9pm as I am writing this review and I'm thinking about my thai noodle soup and our wonderful reunion soon.... PS: background is I'm Viet and I never ever crave Pho or Bun Bo Hue, and you know we Viet cuisine is the mudda noodle soup factory but call me a traitor because this Thai Boat soup is the first soup I crave in my life.

Rod Dee has such a special place in my heart! Been here so many times with various groups of friends and it's just filled with good memories. The food is amazing too! I've had a variety of dishes over the years...pad thai, pad see yew, pad kee mow, indonesian fried rice, green curry, fried rice, spring rolls, mango duck, doughnuts w/ sweetened condensed milk, etc. etc. ALL SO GOOD! I've even gotten food poisoning from here and it's still good enough for me to come back. It's okay Rod Dee--I forgive you (stay away from their pre-made foods that stay at room temp at the counter). Cash only! Self-serve utensils and water/tea and they will bring you your food after you grab a table. Not the best Thai ever (gotta go to Queens for that) but definitely a consistently solid choice for the area!

Very good authentic Thai food in Porter Square! Highly recommend trying the crispy chicken Indonesian fried rice and the seafood drunken noodles. Absolutely delicious with a lot of flavor, has a nice spicy kick to it as well! It's an order and seat yourself restaurant at a very affordable price. The food coma out quick and fresh. The employees speak mostly Thai but understand English. Highly recommend!

Really a 4.5. Anytime a group in Cambridge decides on Thai food, I lobby hard for Rod Dee. Luckily my friends are also fans (one guy went there for dinner four times in a row...I have not hit that level of devotion or gastrointestinal strength yet.) A couple notes: - The menu is pretty wide-ranging, so take a few minutes to scope it (especially the specials board) before you're at the front of the line. - The basil fried rice is genuinely spicy (don't mistake the jalapenos for green peppers). - At least one person will get the Indonesian fried rice with crispy chicken...you can be that person OR steal the chicken off your friend's plate. - Portions are slightly larger than other Thai places in the Harvard/Porter area, but everything is about $2 cheaper. - And yes, it's cash only (in fact, there is an ATM located inside). And be prepared to get to-go if it looks like the seating is all filled up.

Food: 4.5 stars Service: 4.5 stars (for a fast casual) Rod Dee is my go to Thai place near Porters Square/ Harvard Square. Good price for authentic Thai food in very generous portions. They even have complimentary thai hot tea by the utensils! The place is super clean and gives a really safe and classy environment which you don't usually get at a place that isn't a formal sitdown. They make an awesome pad see ew and pad kee mao. Also they have a variety of other more authentic Thai dishes. I've tried quite a few and haven't been disappointed before. My gf has on one occasion ordered the avocado curry and it turned out to be really bad, but otherwise, we really haven't any negative experiences with Rod Dee. Highly recommended for a quick bite or takeout. Also portions for appetizers are huge!

My go to Thai spot every time. Every time I go here I have to order their crispy chicken!!! Love love love. I tried their pad thai here the other day! Pretty swell. I never expected it to be sweet so it threw me off a little LOL. No big deal. I really like how they add peanuts to the dish and it makes it much more yummy with an extra crunch! Always a great time here. My friend ordered the vegetarian version of pad Thai and she destroyed it LOL. So I'm sure it's just as delicious as it is with chicken.

CASH ONLY! Not your typical service restaurant~ Came in not knowing what to expect. It's not some glorified restaurant where a waiter will come to you. You simply just look at the menu on the wall, tell the cashier what would you like, pay your order, then sit down wherever your heart desires. Complimentary tea/water by the utensils and make sure to grab your own napkins/forks/sauce/whatever you need since the employee just gives you your plate and lets you do your thing. I ordered a rice meal with spicy squid-- amazing! I had plain white rice but the main part of my meal was sooo good. Everything was hot, spicy, and filled with goodness. Along with that, I had a thai iced tea. It was just as I expected- a balance of sweet and refreshing. My friend ordered Pad See You and he really enjoyed it. I had a bite and it was so hot that I wanted to tear up. I'm too impatient to wait for my food to cool down, sadly. Overall, it was a great experience trying out thai food for the first time. Will come back again!

Cash only! There's a Bank of America ATM across the street, and apparently one inside the restaurant....? Never noticed this though. I haven't tried much on the menu, mostly because I just stick with my favorites: Pad See Ew, coconut soup with chicken, fresh rolls, scallion pancakes. One time my brother ordered a chicken curry dish which wasn't anything special.

This is my favorite Thai place, and one of the only things I miss about living in Cambridge. The employees are friendly, the food is delicious (and somehow not expensive), and the restaurant is brightly lit and just feels happy. I can't verify its authenticity, but one of my friends remarked that it was the best Thai food he's had outside of Thailand itself. I've tried nearly everything on the menu over the years, and the quality is consistently good. There are some surprising ones that I like outside of the "standard fare" (The Kua Gai is probably my favorite dish outside of Tom Yum Fried Rice). If you keep getting Pad Thai or one of the Fried Rices, I'd recommend at least trying some of the other dishes, you really can't go wrong. If I had to nitpick about anything, it's that they don't deliver outside a pretty small radius!

You have to try their Indonesian fried rice - such much flavor packed into a rice dish. I'm honestly a fan because they're not only excellent Thai food (not college town Thai food) but also a great value for the amount of food they give. The pad see ew could definitely be better but I can see an authentic Thai place when I come to one. It's cash only. You go and order at the counter and seat and clean after yourself. Plenty of shared tables for larger and smaller groups. It sounds like they have a solid delivery system so either eating in or ordering out works well.

I really like this chain! It is a good and affordable place. The portions are huge for me. They are 2 servings for me. I love Thai food and each place does a decent job in satisfying my Thai craving. The plate I had at this location was Pan Fried Rice Noodle with Duck and it was just okay. I was craving duck, but afterwards I think I was craving vegetables more. Haha, it was just okay though. I asked for medium spicy and they do not kid about their spice! It was two servings for me and overall good. If you're in the area and want something fast, affordable, and good, then give this place a try.

I have been anticipating my return to Rod Dee, and it did not disappoint! I used to go to the one in Brookline all the time when I lived in Brighton back in 2001-2 and it was one of my favorite spots. Coming back makes me so happy! The Pad See Yew was not too sweet, the fried rice was not too salty and all the ingredients were fresh and cooked just right. Excited to be moving to the neighborhood this Fall, so will be making this spot a regular stop!!

Great price and quickness. The food differs from visit to visit, but it's usually pretty good. The curries aren't always great, often too sweet or watery. All the stir-fry's, fried rice and noodle dishes are better!

Thai food is amazing here!!!! It's delicious whatever I get and they are fast with their service. Big fan of their crazy udon which has this delicious spicy sauce!!!

I'm from the old school of "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything." Honest. It PAINED me to write such a negative first review of Rod Dee. Sticky rice and mango and Pad Kee Mao. Spicy crispy chicken. Spicy eggplant and basil. Thai iced tea. That's all you need in life. I should have amended my review long ago because, while each Rod Dee has it's own special take, the Cambridge shop did bounce back on subsequent visits. The Fenway location is my heart; the smaller Brookline is my soul; and, Cambridge location? Guess it's my sciatica.

Soooo I didn't carry cash much when I first moved to Boston. This Rod Dee? Conveniently on the way home? Yeah, I carry cash now. What can I say, I'm food motivated... I'm picky about Thai food (and Vietnamese food but that's for another review) and I've been happy with Rod Dee. My go to order? Pad See Ew and my partner gets the Kao Soi. Do that, and you'll prob be happy to. See, I like spicy flavorful dishes and these both fit the bill. Rod Dee seems to understand how the chew on the noodles is just as an important part of a dish as how it tastes. Something not all restaurants understand. I've tried the Pad Thai, and it was kinda meh, and I've branched out to other items on the menu as well. Without fail though I always come back to my 2 favs.

Food is really good. Their menu is really expansive, so you can try a lot of different things if you come here many times. They are cash only, however, so make sure you bring some cash. Come with a Thai person, and there will be some extra items available for you to enjoy. Much better than the other Thai places in the area.

Love love love this place! Their crispy chicken is to die for! I can always count on this place. Haven't been disappointed once yet and I go regularly. I usually get the Indonesian fried rice or the Pad see yew with crispy chicken. I wish it was closer to where I live. I very much enjoy how it's a sit in restaurant. You order your food, pick a table and they serve you, not like any usual restaurant where you're expected to be seated, served throughout the whole service, pay your meals and tip them! Although I do tip them when I place my order at the cashier. They have free water and tea! The place is usually crowded, so it's a bit hard to get a spot to sit. The wait for a table isn't long most of the time.

It hadn't really occurred to me to pop in here despite a few whispers from friends that it's the real deal. I had a Danish couchsurfer visiting one weekend who said she'd never had Thai food, so we took her here just 'cause it was close by. I make excuses to go here now. I had the Chiang Mai noodles, which were pretty good, but the Khao Soi just knocks it out of the park. My companions both had the Pad Thai, which they said was especially good. It's cash only. Don't let that stop you, seriously.

Rod Dee is one of those places you walk by a 1000 times and never would have known its goodness until you Yelp it. The food is excellent. My short list of favorites: * Pad See You is fantastic -- nice mix of vegetables and flavorful noodles * Mango Curry is killer * Pad Kee Mao is my favorite when I want some spice. The only gotcha is that it's cash only. I'd love for them to get LevelUp and span that gap.

Cash only! I haven't much experience with Thai food, but I am loving my experience so far with Rod Dee. Their portions are large and are perfect for lunch/dinner. Their pad thai and indonesian fried rice are amazing.

Came here for a late-night dinner with a friend. The place was quiet and it was easy to find a seat. Note that this place is CASH ONLY. For those who do not carry cash, there is an ATM on site and a Bank of America near the Porter T stop. The Basil Pad Thai was delicious, and had a lovely spicy kick! The Drunken Noodles, however, were pretty meh. The chicken was dry, and I barely tasted any flavor. You are better off trying something else on the menu.

I can't resist a good cheap thai place! The portions here are pretty generous, I usually have enough to qualify getting a to go box and not just finishing off the plate. Definitely authentic though! That being said, it is weird that they serve Indonesian fried rice with fried chicken and fried egg in addition to all their Thai dishes.. but I like it all the same! Oh and the avocado smoothie... works best when you order something super spicy!

I often go to this place in groups or with my husband. I have tried a lot of their food and finally settled down on their Pad Kra Pao... it's a hot thai basil preparation of ground chicken served on white rice. I love food that is hot and spicy and this dish is right up my alley. My husband loves their drunken noodles, but this time, he had the pad kee mao and he enjoyed it. The flavors were great and the vegetables were perfectly cooked...their crunchiness was preserved in the process. I'm not a big fan of their fried rice or crispy chicken. I have tried these dishes a number of times but they have always been too salty for me. The crispy chicken was hard and chewy on a couple of occasions. On rare occasions, I have ordered a coconut soup with chicken, green papaya salad (Som Tum) or a hot and sour soup with my entree. They are all average. Also, I can never finish them with my entree because the meal is then too huge for me. On the occasion when I order a soup or a salad, I take most of my entree for later in a take out box. If you're coming to this place, it's cash-only but there's an ATM inside the place. I have seen that the place gets really busy during dinner hours on the weekend and sometimes, you have to wait for a table to free up before you can sit and eat. On these days, if I am visiting Rod-Dee, I either go early or a bit after 8 to avoid the long wait time.

Food: Boat noodles, spicy with beef and tendons. Soup was spicy and very rich in flavor. You can definitely taste the lime. It was a pretty big bowl and the rice noodle was tied in a bunch in the bottom so was easy to pick out and eat. The beef slices were thick and plenty of tendon. I love the fresh bits of cilantro and crunchy fried pork skin. Have to eat the pork skin fast as it absorbs the soup pretty quick. For eating in, you place your order near the back where the registers are. After you place your order, they'll bring your food to you where ever you sit. But first, after paying, head to the right and grab your utensils and napkins. There is water and tea. Make sure you use the correct cups. The small plastic cups are for the water and the white styrofoam cups for the hot tea. The place is cash only so plan accordingly. There's street parking but its generally hard to find a spot during lunch time as it is in the porter sq area. The shopping plaza near by is usually also packed. You could park at the Lesley parking lot after paying.

Rod Dee is usually not too crowded, so as long as you don't go at a peak time, you should be fine. Most of the things here are all right, but nothing is really spectacular. The spring rolls are okay, as are most of the noodle dishes. For what it's worth, I think their portions are fairly large. However, I think the amibance of the place leaves something to be desired. It's a little grimey at times. Still, one of the positives is that this place is self serve- as in, you go to the counter and you place your own order, so you don't have to pay tip. Thank god.

We moved to another state already but I have to say I really miss this place! They have this shumai that is the most yummy shumai ever!! It reminds me of Thailand so much!! All their dishes are super delicious!! I really love this place!!

  • Celin W.

Cash only and line up for your order! Was impressed that despite the crowd the staff didn't chase us out the second we finished our food - appreciated the patience. Had the chicken and shrimp pad thai here - a little amused how there was exactly two small shrimps and maybe about 6 pieces of chicken in the dish. Very meticulous. Still it was quite delicious, flavorful and the portion of noodles was very generous. For $9 (no tipping) I can't complain about the 2 shrimps. Had a little of someone's pad see you - which also tasted quite authentic, and it was a huge portion. I would definitely go back to try more dishes if possible.

Love love love this place. My coworker, who is Asian (I mention this only because it is evidence that the old saw IS REALLY TRUE) highly recommended Rod Dee Thai. It is close to our workplace, so typically we order and I walk up through hoity-toity Cambridge neighborhoods to pick up lunch. On Friday I had a Nam Sod with chicken -- a slightly unusual choice for me since I am 95% (or greater) vegetarian. We requested spicy ... ... and we got it! Man oh man this thing was HOT, and also DELICIOUS.

This place rocks. If I could wrap it up and take it home with me back to Connecticut I would. My hometown could use a little place like this. It's basically a no nonsense Thai restaurant where you order at the counter and seat yourself. Customers are required to bust their own own tables so that means no tipping is required (the cheapskate in me likes that part). They have many of the usual Thai dishes like Pad Thai, drunken noodles and peanut satay, but they also have lots of interesting more creative dishes that I never heard of before. I could easily try everything on their menu. Their daily specials were written in both English and Thai (a nice touch). I got the spicy pat pong entree and wow did it kick my ass.... in a good way. It was sooooo hot and spicy that it believe its peppers were grown in the fiery bowels of hell. My mouth is a glutton for punishment when it comes to spicy foods so I thought it was terrific. And geesh, that pat pong item only had a two-pepper rating on their menu. My god, I cannot imagine the hotness level of the three-peppers items on their menu. When I visited one particular Saturday evening it wasn't very busy at first but by the end of the night it had gotten very crowded, consisting largely of Harvard grad students.

My favorite thai place in Boston. I started going to the beacon st one on a weekly basis back in college, now that I am living in the city, I tend to go this particular branch. I love their indonesian fried rice. It is a guilty pleasure. I also like their pad thai, rice plates and their pad see ew. Also their drunken noodle is well made, not soggy and just the right amount of spice.

Why are people crying about this place being cash only? It's so freaking cheap! I mean, do you really leave your home without 15 bucks in your pocket? Wow... The menu is great, the portions are sufficient, the staff is pleasant. I also love the casual atmosphere. I took one star off because our table was dirty, not the sticky dirty that can be easily wiped off with a rag and to me, can be overlooked in a busy place where people are literally jumping on opening tables. This particular table was filthy as in needing a scrubby to get the ground-in dirt out of it. Still, a local gem.

One of the things I miss the most about living in the Cambridge/Somerville area is this particular Rod Dee- they make the best pad thai, serve up a generous portion, and it's so affordable! I've tried many other pad thai dishes in the Greater Boston area and some have been comparable but more expensive and others have not been as good, yet still more expensive than Rod Dee. I love the texture of their pad thai noodles (more chewy, less mushy) and their distinct balance of sweetness and sourness (leans a little towards sweet rather than sour) and a couple times a week, I find myself craving a plate of it. I've also enjoyed their Pad See You a couple of times. Notes: They are located conveniently in Porter Square, are cash only, and only deliver after 5 PM.

Rod Dee is now officially my favorite Thai establishment in the Greater Boston area. A foodie trip to Rod Dee gets my blood boiled and excited. The food is consistently amazing no matter what I choose on the menu - Rad Na, Pad See You, Tom Yum Noodles ... (Insert another 10 dishes here), every dish is an savory experience and every experience leaves my taste buds dazzled and wanting for more, a huge plus is the lightning fast service that never leaves my eager tummy unattended for more than a few minutes. This is the place I find myself when I crave something simply delicious and without a care for the world.

For the price-to-volume-to-taste ratio, Rod Dee deserves 5 stars. Might very well be my favorite budget eating-out option. I've been to Thailand and I can say, without any sarcasm, that Rod dee miiiiight be better. Since I had Rod dee before I traveled to Thailand, I might have a warped idea of what Thai food should taste like, but I don't care. I've never ordered anything that wasn't delicious. I always stick to my usual though: pad thai, pad see you, indonesian fried rice, pineapple fried rice, and coconut curries. The 5 stars are for the food and not needing to tip because you get your own utensils and put away your plates/bowls. If you're looking a cute first date location/good ambiance/any degree of fanciness, this is probably not the place. I always pick-up my food in-person because they are always really busy and delivery takes a while on the weekends. For a cheapskate like me who complains that everything is too expensive, this is one of the only places I'm always down to eat at!

Food is good here, but every time... and I mean EVERY SINGLE TIME they get it wrong. The lady that takes the orders (by phone or in place) does NOT speak English. She pretends and acts so confidently that you believe she does until things go wrong. Today, my kids' food came out and after seeing them eat and wait for 10 minutes for my food, I realized my order wasn't coming out. They took my order again, and 20 minutes later I was still waiting for it. I complained and they said it would take 10 more minutes... I cancelled it and left the restaurant feeling hungry and disappointed. Unfortunately, this is not the first OR the second time this happens. One day, I had guests and order several curry dishes here for take out (I had to get cash and park across the street). When I got home and was serving the food... Nice surprise: NO RICE! What can you do? They don't even deliver! That's it. They lost me this time! Sayonara!

This review is for the red curry. The price was very reasonable and the portion large (although I had the smaller option), but the sauce was a little too watery and not creamy enough. The noodle dishes looked better.

Very good Thai cuisine. Many options for u to come back again & again. We tried the dumplings, fish cakes, fried rice w fried chicken & fried egg, pork, and pineapple fried chicken. All were quite good. Fish cake was a little chewy. Malaysian fried rice dish was quite a meal. For dessert, we tried the fried donuts - what a value 12 w condensed milk & roti hw uh was buttery & laced w condensed milk. Enjoy all the offerings here as there's so much. The servers r quite friendly & helpful. It's very minimalist of in decor & self service but it's worth it.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about this place. My food was okay, but nothing special. I ordered Pad Se Ew with tofu, spicy, and crab rangoon, but the woman who took my order said they 'sold out' of the crab rangoon. It only took 5 minutes wait to pick up my take out (which should really be a sign). I got home from my walk 10 minutes later and the food was still hot, but vary bland. I guess when you order spicy they give you a little cup of sour chili sauce (not my favorite heat profile). Portion was generous and a fair amount of tofu in the dish (and the price was a good deal, less than $9), but the noodles were too soft, over cooked, as was the Chinese broccoli- it was so over cooked all the green had leached out. I'd rather wait 15 minutes for made-to-order take away. I'll stick with my favorite, S&I Thai in Brighton/Allston. Cheaper, they take cc, and way tastier.

I've only been once but three days later I'm still wondering why my pad thai was so delicious. There were only two shrimp in the dish which is lame in my book but the taste of the dish was fresh and delicious and I can't put my finger on exactly what made it any different from any other heavy greasy dish of pad thai. It didn't seem heavy but it didn't appear to be making any effort towards more healthy. I don't know. It's a mystery. I'll be back for seconds to investigate further.

Rod Dee is pretty damn good. I've lived in Northen Thailand extensively and Rod Dee is my go-to place for 'realer' Thai food that isn't too sickly sweet lacking, but rather is funky, fresh, and can be SPICY! If you're into that. If you're not, just tell them to tone it down a little bit. I'm not a regular dishes type of person but man of they don't do these dishes so good...! I just keep getting these again and again, Pad see ewe, earthy and aromatic, comforting. Som Tom: Some of the best som tom I've had in Boston, funky, fresh, hot, and sour. Khao Soi, super hard to get in the Boston area! While theirs doesn't care to my favorite places in Chiang Mai, it is a decent product of its own right and they serve it with all the right condiments. Basil, tofu, and eggplant. Super comforting. Maybe a little rice heavy but the rice that is infused with the sauce is so herbal and delish. Indonesian Fried Rice: Just try it. I can't even. Other dishes are good too, but those are ones I almost always get some variation of every time I go.

I used to eat here all the time and loved it. I ordered from here 5 months ago and got huge tubs of curry and great portions. Tonight, I ordered 3 dishes over the phone for delivery, when I opened up the containers they were mostly rice with very little actual curry or dish. I was so dissapointed!! Rho Dee...after 4 years of customer loyalty...this was upsetting! What happened to you? Mostly rice and not much curry out of my 3 dishses that I ordered? Are times that tough that you're cutting corners this badly?

We ordered the Pad Thai with Crispy Chicken and Tom Yum Noodle Soup with seafood. I found both dishes to be on the sweet side (sweeter than I expected), but was still quite good. Good portions, affordable and ingredients were fresh (specifically the squid and shrimps in the soup noodle). Also really enjoyed the crushed peanuts in the pad Thai (which was not spicy at all). Would definitely come back to try other dishes on their menu.

This is a great place to grab a casual bite to eat with friends to catch up or anytime you find yourself hungry for a quick bite to eat! My staples are always the Pad Thai with Crispy Chicken or Indonesian Fried rice with Crispy chicken. Their seasonal Mangos and Sticky rice is also a treat. Whether you head here for a loved go-to-dish or are willing to try something more traditionally Thai that you've never had before, Rod Dee is an affordable and tasty place to do it. There are also many locations here in the Boston area that are both clean and comfortable, which make it convenient. *Note - The Porter Square location is a Cash Only restaurant. I cannot remember if the other locations are or are not.

Stopped in for post-St. Paddy's Parade lunch and got the drunken noodles with chicken, because after stumbling around in a crowd of drunken bros, I wanted my food to be drunken too. It was deliciously spicy and flavorful. The chicken was tender and there was a wide variety of veggies in the dish, all of which were on the crunchy side and really good. My only complaint was that there wasn't enough sauce to dip my side of sticky rice in. That being said the drunken noodles were sufficiently drunk with sauce, they just didn't want to share. Bf got the Thai Noodle soup which he consumed with gusto. This was really good thai food! If it was more convenient for me to get here I'd probably be a regular. Cash only, so make sure you bring the dolla bills! (They do have an ATM though.)

Not worth a second visit. It took 40 mins (2 follow-ups with the staff) to get a Pad Thai ready. My friends as well as about 20 people who placed their orders after me either finished their meal or got their orders to go. After waiting patiently for 25 mins, I asked one of the staff for the status and she responded "Coming Up" without even pretending to check with the kitchen. It took another 10 mins for another staff to discover the mistake. No apology whatsoever from anyone. Food was decent. Probably not as good in actuality because I was starving.

I ordered the lamb special. It was a spicy lamb stir fry with vegetables and a side of rice. My boyfriend ordered Pan Fried Rice Noodle with Duck. Although it was a little greasy, it was quite delicious. All of the dishes had a kind of home cooked feel, which was great. The restaurant itself is kind of like a fast food self-serve type style. I wouldn't go here for the atmosphere, but the food was decent and cheap. Good for a quick bite.

Hit or miss... I ordered their Yum Seafood through delivery about a year ago and asked for it to be EXTRA EXTRA SPICY. Man, it was good. Sooo delicious and chock full of flavor. Last week, I came here with a friend of mine who suggested we order two of their special entrees-- thai sausage and roast pork. I cringed at the thought of ordering these dishes, but reluctantly agreed to his proposals nonetheless. The thai sausage slices were WAY too heavy on the lemongrass. Tone it down, please! The sticky rice that came along with the dish was just weird. Too hard. The roast pork was bland... Of course, I didn't expect much because it's weird to order roast pork at a thai restaurant, but it definitely needed more seasoning. Overall, nice atmosphere, good service, and decent food.

Omg, I ate in so many Thai restaurants , and this is one of the worst. I came to this place because of the good review and Thai servants( which normally means decent quality). We ordered 5 dishes. Only Tom yum is fine. The rest like pad Thai is so sweet. We almost thought the chef mistaken it for salt. Just not eatable. Grrr

Consistently excellent food and quick service. Has a cafeteria vibe. Not fancy. Perfect for a large dinner on a weekday after work. Excellent dishes: Coconut soup - the creamy coconut and lemongrass broth is out of this world. I get it every tie. Crispy chicken - a ~$5 side dish that's very substantial and very well made! Always fresh and crispy. Some dishes come with crispy chicken, such as the indonesian fried rice Pad thai - probably the most popular thai dish anywhere. It's made so well here. Indonesian fried rice - a lot of rice, a lot of meat, sweet, spicy, and savory all in one. So much satisfying flavor.

The best Thai food in the Davis, Porter, Harvard area! Hands down. Good sized portions for cheap! Plenty of seating, but super convenient to grab some takeout on your way home off the T. Love the pad see-ew, the crispy chicken, and drunken noodles. Wasn't a big fan of the sweet and sour chicken, but of everything I've tried it's rare that I don't enjoy it. Important things to note: - CASH ONLY - Delivery takes FOREVER. So either do takeout or make sure you call quite a bit in advance. - There's a small parking lot in the back, so don't waste your quarters at the meters

I actually found this place when it was recommended to me by the wife of one of my best friends. She is a Thai woman who recently moved to this country and became very fixated on finding the most authentic Thai food - she recommended this place to me. This place is so good, and I'm embarrassed to say I lived right down the road for many years without knowing about it. I now have a hard time going to any other Thai place. Luckily I can stop here on the way home and get take out, which I do once or twice a week. The staff are extremely nice and helpful. I don't get the impression they do a lot of catering, but when my friend asked if they could make enough food to cater his wedding, they were very excited to help (and did a great job - the Thai food at the wedding was a huge hit). The one issue is that they are CASH ONLY, but given the quality of the food and the people there, I can't deduct a star for it.

Authentic, inexpensive and delicious Thai food! The location in Porter Square is so much brighter and spacious than the one in Brookline. Love that it's just opposite of the Porter T station. Things that we always order from here are their crispy, spicy squid on rice (crazy good!!), pad thai with crispy chicken, pad siew, Indonesian fried rice (my husband's favorite!) and Thai ice tea. Only downside is Cash Only! But no worries, they have an ATM machine inside the restaurant or Bank of America right across. I will definitely be back for more if I'm ever in Boston again.

First things first I'm the realist... ( sorry that song is stuck in my head) As Asian cuisines it should contain the flavors of sweet, sour, salty, spicy all at once in one dish. However... This place serves a bowl of Tom yum soup that's going to get you sugar high. The sticky rice was wrapped in plastic wrap and placed on the plate. Microwaved on rocket heat, that it's no longer chewy, but hard and dry. ( mind out gutter please!) The stir fried beef with lemon grass and herbs was not fresh at all. How do I know? Frozen goods, microwaved with that hot steam flowing out and dead cold after two minutes. What's worst, is how salty it was. Since I can't slurp my soup because it taste like candy, and eat my dry Rock sticky rice with it. I have to eat it with 1/4 of the lettuce served with the beef. Another thing I've noticed, my dishes did not have the aroma of freshly cooked food... I'd rather hike all the way to allston's brown sugar , or montien for Thai food. Perhaps the day I went last week, main cook wasn't there?

They are cash only and you need to get your own silverware and water. Order at the counter and they will bring the food to you. Their Tom yum based soup noodle is very flavorful and on the medium side of spiciness. Their house curry where you can choose pork beef or other, is not actually curry. It's more like a basic stir fry served over rice. There is very little sauce or flavoring and vegetables are on the dry side. The carrots in mine were very thickly cut and undercooked, but you can eat raw carrots anyway so the only downside is that it's kind of rough on the teeth. The flavor is not bad however not impressive either compared to other Thai restaurants. Overall their price is very reasonable for what you get. Great place for grabbing a quick bite.

We ordered pad thai and crazy udon with tofu for eat in. The udon came out after a 35 minute wait with chicken instead of tofu, and none of the green peppers were de-seeded. The pad thai came out after 45 minutes. The two folks who ordered after us suffered the same unreasonable wait time.

Delicious Thai food? Check. Easy to get to? Check. Good prices? Check. Rod Dee is my favorite Thai food in Cambridge (there are a couple of other Rod Dee locations in Brookline and Boston as well). There's no table service, and they are quick. However, there's plenty of seating so this is a good place to go even if you want to sit for awhile. There are enough seats to accommodate groups as well. One thing to remember is that they are cash only.

Absolutely favorite! I love their pork belly concetrate egg stir fried rice. According to a Thai friend, their food is really authentic. Cash only though.

How have I missed this gem all these years right on my hood? I loved my first experience so much that I actually dreamed about it last night. I plan on eating my way through the entire menu.

If I had to choose 1 place to eat for the rest of my life, it would be a hard choice. I don't think I'd be able to tell you. BUT I would say that Rod Dee would be one of the first candidates for that lusted-after spot. I've gotten many dishes here, none were anything less than exceptional. Here is a small sample: Green papaya salad: fresh, juicy, delectable. I wouldn't have got it on my own, but I have a friend who works as a delivery boy in a Thai restaurant, so he recommended this to me. It has little bits of shrimp in it, and I think it's based on a fish sauce. I ****ing love this dish, man. Pad Thai/Crispy Chicken Pad Thai: the gold standard for Pad Thai as far as I'm concerned, nuff said. Pad See Ew: Nothing ew about this dish. Great alternative for Pad Thai if you want noodles, but don't want to get Pad Thai like everyone else does. Rod Dee Noodle: These noodles have more seafood than the Gulf of Maine, although I don't think the Gulf of Maine is a good habitat for shrimp or squid. Amazing dish, highly recommend. Crispy Mango Duck: Unbelievable. Pieces of the most juicy, deep-fried duck bathing in a mango sauce along with its baby corn and pepper comrades, with a side of white rice. My mouth is watering even as I write about it. There are other dishes that I've tried, and I have never gone wrong with any. Great thing about this place is that they have lots of cold water and hot tea. The atmosphere is great. It's cash only, and I've heard people complain about this, but I don't understand where the problem is. It's the most delicious thai food you can get, ever, definitely worth the extra trouble of making sure you have enough cash to buy it.

mistakenly remembered this place as the spring-out of Dok Bua (also in Brookline). now that i reconnect the correct picture of a hole-in-wall, 2-table, take-out place along the Beacon Green Line, this now makes more sense. Rod Dee Cambridge is definitely an upgrade from the Brookline outlet. modern design & lighting, ample seating (there's even a long table and a bigger round table for larger parties), expanded menu... all up for a good start! walked in around 6:30pm on a saturday; plenty of seats for the time being. another 30-40 minutes later, the place was packed. ordered 3 appetizers/salads, 3-4 entrees to share between 4 of us. wayyyy too much food. the square table that holds about 5 plates now became way too small for us (we chose not to occupy a lager table in consideration of other diners). maybe because they were starting to get busy, the lady that brought out the last dishes just left it to us to worry about where the extra plates should land. one actually sat next to me on the booth seats for a while. serious. except for the house/special salad where the dressing was pure peanut butter slathered on a bed of lettuce & etc, the others were quite ok. loooove their satay dipping sauce -- definitely brought me back to the good old days in asia where hawkers could sell satay on charcoal grill on the streets -- the meat itself wasn't of that quality/flavor, but at least the sauce spot on. place is cash only; there's a stand-alone ATM on premise and couple of banks/ATM nearby. when we called prior to arrival, lady (not speaking english fluently) appeared to be telling us that there's a parking lot at the back of the place. we found street parking as we hung up so didn't attest to the validity of that claim. would definitely go again if i'm in the area looking for cheap eat.

This is a casual restaurant, with about 8 tables. You order at the counter, pay in cash, and get your own silverward. But the food is cheap, fresh, and delicious, with fast service. My own dish was a vegetarian curry, with very fresh vegetables, nicely puffed-up tofu, and an addictive sauce based on coconut milk.

There's a philosopher (the name escapes me) who once said that there is a mental picture of every object (e.g. a horse, car, etc) a person has ever seen in their head. This picture is that person's ideal version of that object. Now, loosely (and probably incorrectly) extrapolating that idea into this Yelp review, I would say that Rod Dee has now taken over as the mental image I see for amazing Americanized Thai food. If you're not worried about your weight or overall figure, come here and try the Indonesian Fried Rice. It comes with a fried egg, crispy chicken, fried rice, a food coma, satisfaction, and no regrets. For you college folk, fear not, it's also fairly priced. My friends and I ordered, the Indonesian Fried Rice, the Pad See You w/chicken and the Pad Thai w/ Shrimp and Chicken and it ended up costing less than $30. I will be coming back next time I'm in the area and have a Thai craving, for sure!

If you want to have thai food, you should come here. Pad Thai is so good. Also, they have a lot of thai food that you can try and all of them are good. Moreover, you should try Mango with sweet sticky rice for dessert.

Get the fried spring rolls, and of course the Pad Thai. It's like getting a home cooked meal - food is served on white pyrex dishes. Love it! I frequent the place once a week. Be sure to bring cash. Don't have cash, no problem, ATM in the restaurant. Lol. Place your order, take a seat and be served. Informal is the theme here. Remember to tip. These people work hard.

I've been a regular here for a few years now - finally got on that Yelp game so I gotta put in a good word for my favorite place. At the risk of losing my credibility, I have to open with a potentially controversial question (I know people take their Thai spots seriously): How do other Thai places in the Cambridge area manage to stay in business? I have been to a handful of them, and without mentioning names and pointing fingers (snitches get stitches), Rod Dee puts them all to shame. Mango crispy duck - bomb. Pad see you - bomb. Spicy crispy chicken... Tremendous. Some of the best pad thai I've had. Indonesian fried rice is excellent. The Rod dee noodle is loaded with seafood and vegetables. Hard to go wrong at this place. Even the desserts are phat, from the mango sticky rice to the Thai donuts (dat dipping sauce tho..) You also won't regret trying their curries in coconut milk. All of the entrees are about 10 bucks, large portions too. Appetizers are a bit pricey and not worth the dough in my opinion. The space itself is spacious, casual, and pleasant. What are you waiting for? Head over to Porter and give this place your money!! Note: This place is cash only, but they have an ATM inside and a BoA across the street.

I have eaten at many Thai Restaurants in Cambridge and Boston and Rod Dee is the best. The food is always fresh and I have yet to order something that is not delicious. Also the staff is very aware of food allergies and special diets. I often order dished both vegan and gluten free and have had no problems. It is so wonderful to find Thai food that can be made without fish sauce, shrimp paste, etc. The curries in coconut milk and drunken noodles are big winners! Cash only :(

  • Dan K.

I can't say enough about this place. I've tried a few places around Cambridge and they have been, well, average. Then a friend recommended Rod Dee, and after trying it I won't go anywhere else if I can help it. The big pro's are: - Delicious food. Really, really good. I'm especially impressed with the curries and the noodle dishes. I've been here a lot and tried a lot of different things, and everything is good. - Cheap - Quick. You can eat in or take out, and in either case you don't have to plan a whole night around it. Some things to consider: - Cash only.

I am SO impressed by how good the food is for how little we paid. Taking the recommendation of others, we got crispy chicken pad thai and yellow curry with pork. The crispy chicken is amazing! and the yellow curry was really good too. In total it was around $18. Definitely coming back!

  • Anna P.

This is my happy place. The menu is simply enormous - so you can probably find something you like SOMEWHERE on it. The spicy food is genuinely spicy, the vegetables are genuinely fresh, and everything comes out hot and delicious every time. You must bring cash, and you probably have to fight for a table that is not next to the door when it's the dead of winter. Otherwise - eat, and enjoy.

  • Kelly R.

Cheap food served in huge portions! I'm not particularly good at distinguishing between different restaurants' Pad Thais (if it's chicken, shrimp, and noodles, it's about all the same to me), but I thought the taste was comparable to Spice in the Square. Service is pretty quick. Note that it's cash only!

    (4)
  • Maggie O.

Incredibly quick service and the portion sizes are well worth the cost. I had the shrimp fried rice and found it delicious. Although I would have enjoyed more shrimp, the dish was fresh, not overly fried, and wonderfully tasty. Note: They are cash only.

I have been to Rod Dee many times and I will keep coming back strictly for the food. Minus one star for the service and minus a star for the smell in the restaurant which reminds me of a men's locker room. Food- gai kra pow- my favorite Papaya salad Red curry Mango sticky rice when in season

I've been a solid Rod Dee customer for several years now. This Thai restaurant is very authentic and serves delicious food! I've tried a dozen or more items on their menu but I always seem to come back to the below few: 1) Spicy Crispy Chicken - The chicken on this dish is amazing. It's not spicy at all but does have a little heat. Its crispy, very well seasoned, and has a hint of heat to spark your taste buds. The chicken has always been fully cooked through, been tender, and moist (i.e. not over cooked). Comes with brown and white rice. 2) The Indonesian Fried Rice - By far the best fried rice I have ever had. I can't even explain all of the spices that go into it but its flavorful like no other! I've never found it to be too salty, always seemed just about right to me. You get various veggies and chicken in the rice along with several strips of friend chicken. I will say, the Indonesian fried rice is great but the fried chicken that it comes with is a bit plain. I WISH they offered the spicy crispy chicken with fried rice. You can ask for this but there's a $5-6 up charge, which seems a bit high since the dishes themselves are $8-9. 3) Drunken Noodles - These are also fantastic. Thick wide noodles with your choice of meat. 4) Massaman Curry - One of my favorite curries and this place does it right! Sweet and savory. Comes with a hearty amount of potatoes and pineapples! I've had it with beef, chicken, and pork, all which were great in the curry. 5) Green Papaya Salad - Another great and authentic dish. I grew up eating this dish frequently and it's usually hard to find a Thai restaurant that does it right. Rod Dee does! Ask for it to be more spicy if need be else it won't be at all but very tasty on some sticky rice. 6) Larb - A grounded meat mixture with onions, scallions, cilantro, lime juice, and mint. Again, a childhood favorite and although I don't like onions, cilantro or scallions, I power through it since those ingredients are crucial to the dish. It's great with sticky rice. I request mine with a little more spice. Also this dish is pronounced Laa-b. The name can be somewhat unappealing but I promise its a great dish. Other worthy mentions: Panang Curry, Green Curry, Pad Thai, Rod Dee Noodle, and Pad See You Overall I was first very disappointed with the Thai restaurant scene when I first moved out to Boston several years ago, most were very lack lustering. But a friend brought me to Rod Dee and its become a rotation in my usual dine in or take out spots. I've gone to all their other locations and the food has been just as good. As others have mentioned: 1) Cash only 2) No table service, refill your own drinks and clear your own tables but they will bring your food out to you. 3) Very friendly staff, don't be worried if you don't know what a dish is or need an explanation of whats in it 4) Accommodating of vegetarians, will sub or remove meat items if you ask

  • Anderson T.

Overall, delicious and worthy of 5 stars! The Pros: 1) Food is high quality and fairly authentic. 2) Dishes are affordable and well priced! 3) Service is kind and friendly, without being overbearing. 4) Proximity to the Porter Square T stop is a plus. The Drawbacks 1) This is very minor, but it is indeed cash only. An ATM is on site, but some days I wish I could pay with credit card. I most definitely would go back, particularly for a late night dinner!

Close by: check. Fast: lightspeed. Cheap: (ish) Delicious: um.... We've had takeout twice now. And it's really just not very good. Tried the green curry, one of the soups, one of the veggie entrees (can't remember which) and all have been consistently bad. Really fresh vegetables (yay!) but otherwise almost completely lacking flavor. In fact, the curry was almost completely lacking, um... curry. Then smashed over a glutinous, mush of white rice and it feels like I just ate a ball of paste. Based on the language in most of the other reviews ("Best Thai in Davis/Porter/Harvard!", "Best Pad Thai!", etc.) I'm not too sanguine about the prospects. I want to like it. Because it's Thai. Because they're really friendly. Because it's close by. But the food is just not very good. Bummer. Maybe it's because we're recent arrivals from Seattle where Thai food is like Mexican food in Austin: the reliably affordable, tasty go-to when you can't decide what to do for dinner. Looks like we're going to have to find another reliably affordable, tasty go-to for those evenings when we're tired/lazy/hangry/preoccupied.

I expected much more from the good reviews. Unfriendly service, mushy pad thai, crab rangoon was pretty but a hard shape to eat, tiny tiny water cups so you have to keep getting up for more water, and no condiments on the tables.

This is one of my favorite places! The prices are fair, the portions are plentiful, and the food is so good! It's so great because you can get a nice dine-in experience (almost!) at counter service prices. They will even bring your food out to you! The artwork they have around is cute and interesting. It's always clean, no bad smell. They are fast. And you can park across the street in the Porter Square Shopping Center lot. So convenient! I love Rod Dee! **CASH ONLY** but there is a SUM ATM one block away at East Cambridge Savings Bank.

Nothing better than rod dee after a hard day's work. It's tiny and oblong but bright and affordable. Get a couple plates to share so you can try all the DELICIOUS food this place makes, but be careful not to over order unless you have room for the leftovers, as portion sizes are quite generous!

LOVE this place. Seriously, whenever I'm in Porter, I eat here. Their food is amazing, and super random, but they have the best thai coffee I've ever had. I love this place and parking is super convenient in the parking lot across the street. If you love thai food, go to Rod Dee

Pretty good food. I enjoy eating at the restaurant and getting take out a couple times per month. Almost all the time they get my order correct. Unfortunately yesterday apparently I ordered the wrong thing. I went up to the counter and explained that it wasn't what I ordered. The lady very rudely said next time you need to say this and this. She was quite unpleasant with her attitude. I'm very disappointed with their customer service.

I got a noodle soup with chicken in Tom Yum soup. The soup was very flavorful and enjoyable. Spicy, yet slightly creamy. It wasn't super salty. There was a good amount of noodle. Though I will complain about the tiny portion of crushed chicken I got in the soup. While the flavors were great, this particular dish seemed to be poorly valued, due to the lack of chicken. Since I can't complain about the dish, other than portion sizing, I will have to come here again and get something with better portions.

Its nice that there is finally a thai place for take out in this area. While its not the best Thai food, they have a solid Pad Thai, a large menu and most things are just about 8 bucks a dish - a pretty good deal. The crag rangoons (we got about 7 in an order) were pretty good, though a tad greasy. Actually everything was "pretty good, though a tad greasy." Solid three star place, but plus one for having excellently fresh and tasty shrimp. Very unexpected and appreciated. FYI: they don't take cash, so come prepared.

My Thai, My Thai, My Thai, Talking 'bout My Thai! (sorry for those of you that don't know the play on the song lyrics ha) But seriously, this place is going to be my go to spot for cheap and filling thai food. Anna and I both couldn't finish our entire portions of food and I only spent $8!! Pretty much amazing. I got their yellow curry chicken with pineapple over brown rice and Anna got their chicken cashew. You order at the counter and pay there, but then they bring it to your table if you eat in and they use the cutest dishes ever. Mine came in a giant palm leaf shaped dish and it just made me even happier to have paid so little for such a big quantity of food with a curry sauce that is definitely some of the best curry I've had around here! And Anna, being a thai lover herself, said 5 stars the second she bit into her dish she liked it that much! So My Thai we hope to have a second date with you soon!

  • Te R.

great authentic thai food! they do most things right. but since their menu is quite extensive, some of the things on the menu were not that good. my impression was that they were better at fancy dishes than basic dishes. recommended dishes: pla-koong (spicy shrimp salad) larb chicken (spicy chicken salad with mint and other herbs) boat noodle (noodle in beef broth) rice with steamed/fried chicken tomyum noodle soup (noodle in spicy and sour soup) but they didn't get their basil dishes and drunken noodles right though. it was too dry, and sometimes the noodles were not properly cooked. but i went there very often. and 90% of the times i wasn't disappointed. cash only.

THE SPICY CRISPY CHICKEN IS VERY SPICY. Don't know why we didn't realize from the name. But for anyone else as stupid as us out there, beware! Yummy pad see you. Scallion pancakes okay. Really nice dining atmosphere. Would definitely come back here another evening we're in Porter Sq.

Located in very close proximity to Porter Square Train Station, it's very easy to get to. This place is between 3-4 What I really like about this place is it's so bright inside which makes it looks clean and nice. I've been to places where I can't even see the person sitting next to me so thumb up for this. It's a cash only restaurant. The menu is adequate with basic Thai dish. The price is good for Boston area and you will get a good meal with left over (at least we did because there are just too much). So if you're a big eater, it might be a great plus. My friend chose the Jade noodle dish. It's a stir-fried dish. And I have to say it's a disappointment because it's not flavorful and it's not actually warm when it came out so the noodle was a bit cold. Not sure why. It's basic but not too much to take home about. I ordered Khao Soi which is egg noodle in curry sauce. If anything the curry sauce tastes very good, the noodle is okie. They did put chopped pickle cabbage in there which enhanced the flavor nicely. Although I wish they have put a better, more crispy noodle on top because it was a bit soft and not crunchy (in this department, Similians did a better job). You will probably not be able to finish the whole dish because it's a big bowl of noodles in curry sauce but it's very good and tempting. The service was good actually. The food came out very quickly and they have free hot tea so it's like a plus. I think it's a great place for a small group to come and have a casual dinner/lunch especially in a winter day. I would probably come back and try other noodle dish.

Rowdy Rod Dee Piper. I'll try it again but I was disappointed. The Gra Prow chicken was very dry. The chicken satay was very dry too. Someone else had the crab fried rice which was 'meh'. I like the decor and the vibe.... I also like the cafeteria style ordering. I'll try it again and hopefully find something different that is better prepared.

  • Ozma O.

The sauce is good, the vegetables are fine. I'd been there several times and only had vegetarian options so I did not realize their main failing. The meat is atrocious. I tried the beef and it was utterly horrible, old tasteless and like shoe leather. I decided to go back. Maybe Thai restaurants don't do beef well. So I got the 'salmon.' It was not salmon. It was white, thin, fish and most likely tilapia. Also, it was extremely awful in texture and taste. One bite was enough to turn the stomach. They would not allow me to exchange it for something else. The vegetarian entrees are edible but I don't think I will be going back. The food is expensive enough that the quality should not be this low. I suggest a sit down thai restaurant if you prefer more edible food.

There was a cockroach in the Udon Noodles!!!!!!!!!!!! When we brought it up, we were questioned like second class criminals in a Bangkok prison. We finally just asked for a refund and were brought back $8.20. As we were about to leave, one of the ladies came up and asked us to clean our table and put our dishes back! Now come on!!!! I understand this is a cafe like place but after no apologies for the cockroach in our food, I think we were entitled to leave without clearing our space! Absolutely rude and ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I had no interest in trying new cuisine around porter square, I would come here. It's always a safe choice to eat here with friends or just alone. Nice Thai restaurant with suitable decoration. Very warm service and really tasteful Thai food with cheap price. I like the curry rice most.

the danger and the joy of yelp these days, kids, is that there are entirely too many reviews, which may or may not dictate merely, "i like it" or "i don't," or "it was too thai and not american enough," or "you pissed me off because i couldn't get my way so screw you i'll give you one star so there!" so with a healthy amount of skepticism in mind, i went and tried rod dee. highlights! it's a mom and pop, owned and operated by thai people. no frills counter. order what you'd like, pay in CASH. yes, you can complain about it, because in boston, we are spoiled enough to have many establishments that take credit cards. go to NYC and it's the name of the game. all said and told, cash is cheaper for restaurants, and i can also respect where they're coming from. and i rarely carry cash. so yes. cash. bring it. i hear there are multiple locations but have yet to hit them up. take a look at that menu! lots of wonderful traditional items that you wouldn't normally find in a thai-american (pad thai? you wanted something else?) menu. despite being no frills, the restaurant tables were clean, benches, shared space. make some new friends by sitting with strangers. free water in cups from a cooler. condiments with little condiment cups -- choose as you will -- on said counter. not sure if the usuallyredketchup bottle had sriracha in it, but i'd guess it did. free hot thai tea(!) in cups from a cooler. bus your own table. it helps keeps costs low. a la carte items that day included sticky rice + taro or banana in banana leaves. yum! dumplings. stuff like that. i got the thai equivalent of cashew chicken which was surprisingly crispy (wow, crispy chicken). not so much on the sauce (i'm asian. i love my sauce), but tasty, nonetheless. my top pick for thai in boston to date. great authentic food, cheap prices (about 10 or less for an entree), no lack of amazing options to try. what's not to like?

This is our new favorite Thai go to. Everything we've ordered has been tasty and fresh. Great pad Thai, curries and the Star noodles are a delight. The hubby likes the Indonesian fried rice with the crispy chicken. Good crab Rangoon as well. Bring cash as they don't accept plastic!

  • Sofia W.

Pretty good food, and definitely good price for the area. Got Green Curry to go; it wasn't the best I had, but I did eat the whole thing so.... The flavor was pretty basic, not as complex as my favorite place (Little Duck) down in Quincy, but that said the vegetables were cooked PERFECTLY. I prefer Rod Dee over Sugar and Spice, which is across the street. I got the meal to-go (with rice it was $8.50), and the inside was brightly lit and really nice for a lunchtime meal.

Best thai food in the area!! Must try their pad thai and thai ice tea! Been there at least five times and tried a couple noodle soup as well. All the dishes have been great and highly recommended for everyone. Btw, the thai ice tea is really sweet....but i love it. :)

I've since been back on multiple occasions and have fallen in love with this place. OK, so I've gone total fatty and I eat here once a week. Don't judge! I've tried multiple dishes, all of which have been wonderfully executed. The staff has also been very helpful at making suggestions of things for me to try since I do tend to be a creature of habit and eat the same thing over and over again. I've loved all of their suggestions, and wish I could remember what I ate! I love the free tea while waiting for takeout, as well as the soccer matches on the TV. This place has won me over.

My Boston friends took me here for a quick, cheap meal and it was super satisfying! Total hole-in-the-wall dingy counter service joint with large portions of yummy Thai food. The mango curry was delicious with tons of mango. The only weird thing was that it was served on top of a bed of rice instead of with rice on the side. I didn't mind it since I like my rice totally saturated with curry, but I think some people would not like the mushy texture of the rice. We also ordered the Rod Dee Noodle and the Pad See You. They were both good but...they both tasted the same. The Rod Dee Noodle was also supposed to come with squid mixed in and it did not, so I felt like we got a little bit ripped off. Not a culinary masterpiece by any means, but huge menu, huge portions, and it tastes good. That's all Rod Dee promises and that's exactly what you get.

When Rod Dee opened, it was an interesting concept to me, and I quickly got use to it. The food is consistently good. Though over the last year the portion has gotten smaller but the price stayed the same. I love the stir fry dish, always delicious and not laced in gooey sauce, nicely stir fried with a firey flavor, perfect spiciness. All the noodle stir fry are great. I also love the boat noodle, has a really nice herbal flavor and the noodles are cooked really nicely. I also like the egg plant with rice. Hard to find a place where the egg plant are done nicely and maintain the purple color. It's great not having to pay tips and they still bring food to you. Self serve hot Thai tea is really nice. Didn't give it 5 star because no credit card...

Seriously? How am eating at the same place as everyone else? Just moved back to Boston from NY and am on the hunt for some go-to take out spots. Was super happy to see the positive reviews for Rod Dee because its nearby my apartment. SCORE! So, I wander in one afternoon before class, so hungry it nearly hurts - and ridiculously excited about mowing down on some delish Thai. I was literally frothing at the mouth with anticipation. I ordered my standard chicken kra prow and sat down to await culinary bliss. Except... thats not what happened. Instead I'm served an incredibly large plate of rice with a weak version of kra pow. It tasted like....a big plate of rice. FAIL. Since then I've been back twice to see if perhaps it was a fluke. It wasn't. I've had a curry dish, and another stir fry - both with the same result. Ugh. Please folks, enlighten me. What am I missing?

PLEASE USE LESS SALT Rod Dee is my favorite Thai takeout place. I eat there at least once a week. The food is good and inexpensive. I have tried almost every noodle dish and like them all. Same with the fried rice. Their desserts are my favorite part of the menu, especially the mango with sticky rice. yum! Recently, the noodle dishes have been tooo tooo salty. I first fell in love with Rod Dee because they don't stoop to cheap tricks like using salt to provide the only flavor the food has. Rod Dee food is flavorful without a ton of salt. There is no need to put so much salt in the food. I don't know if there is now a new cook who is heavy handed with the salt, or what. But if this salty trend continues, I will need to begin a hunt for a new favorite Thai restaurant.

Pretty good Thai food, great location, doesn't take credit cards. For a take-out place, not taking credit cards is a major downside. If I'm so unorganized that I can't plan and cook dinner, I'm definitely haven't thought ahead enough to go to the bank. Note that they also charge you extra for rice, and won't ask if you'd like it when you order. 3.5 star food, but the most "work" you'll have to put into take-out.

The menu is pretty extensive, and it was the photos of the dishes that helped me make up my mind. The thai noodle soup looked really tasty, and it was! Very flavorful and hearty. My boyfriend, on the other hand, ordered the basil chicken sight-unseen and it was just okay. Too bland. The restaurant is bright and clean with casual order-at-the-counter, deliver-to-your-table service. They lose points for using styrofoam cups for hot tea, and for being cash-only. They should get LevelUp.

This is a good place to get a quick and inexpensive bite to eat. It sort of looks like a fast food place on the inside (counter with a menu over the top of it), but there's also a bunch of self-serve seating. The menu is large and can seem a bit overwhelming because there are typewritten menus and (beautiful) handwritten ones, with Thai writing next to the English. It's so pretty! The food comes out quickly, and the portions are huge. It seems like this place is mostly takeout for locals, but it's got a sweet location (right by the Porter Square T station) for those who don't live so nearby. It is cash-only, though.

Yummy, I love Rod Dee. This is the only Thai place in this entire country where the pad thai is not sticky and way too sweet. Rod Dee is affordable (around $8 for chicken and shrimp pad thai) and informal (there is not table service), making it a great little jewel in the neighborhood.

OH GOOD LORD I LOVE ROD DEE!! Um, thank you, Rod Dee, for being 3 feet away from the commuter rail station. And thank you, Rod Dee, for posting pictures of the secret Thai-only items, so I can insist you let a gringo like me eat them. And thank you, Rod Dee, for having crazy weird plates and bowls, and for being the only Thai place I've ever been to that makes bizarre and fabulous Thai food not found on any other menu. If you want to play major league from the start, get the Yen Ta Fo (no, it's not named after my Jewish mother)-- it's PINK! It's filled with seafood! It has crazy crazy magical weird mushrooms (like nothing you've ever seen), and it has Thai tortilla chips!! I got the boat noodle soup once-- very beefy and hearty, and also super delicious. If you stick to the specials menu or the pictures behind the counter of the Thai-only stuff (or if you can read the Thai-only menu), you'll never go wrong. Yes, it's cash only, which is a pain. And yes, the dining room gets drafty in the winter, but the food is so delightful, and the low-key vibe of the place makes this one of our favorites in town.

THAI HEAVEN. THE BEST THAI I EVER HAD. The Kai Himmipan was a delicious rice dish with with delicately breaded chicken with a special tangy spicy sauce. It was amazing, and do not confuse it with Kung Pao chicken. They give you so much rice too. The Pad thai(chicken) , when it first came out, looked over wet, however, it was NOT the way it seemed. The best cooked pad thai ever, as there was no additional sweetness to it. I must know the secret to their pad thai sauce! The chicken was fresh and delicious. The pineapple fried rice was probably the least notable but it was still good. They use the curry style sauce which is used in singapore lo mein. Rice was not the freshest(meaning it was probably re-cooked) The chicken Pad See You(broad noodles) was a blast, balancing it's sweet and tanginess perfectly. The noodles were perfectly made along with it's ingredients. The appetizer chicken satay with peanut sauce was ok, just grilled chicken on a stick, not sure if it was even 'satay-ed' I would avoid. The appetizer TOD MAN was AWESOME - freshly perfectly burnt fried fish cake with came with a stupendous amazing sauce. MUST TRY. The Thai Ice Coffee was ok - like many places, oversweetened. I would avoid. However, the SMOOTHIE WAS GREAT. I had the mango one and they actually use fresh mangos. *This is generally a make a order, and then self serve ,and self clean. If they bring food to you, and/or if you leave plates on the table, please tip!

Rod Dee is my go-to Thai spot. Pad Thai is my personal favorite, but everything else I've tried has been fantastic as well. You can't go wrong here!

Here's a list of things I love: -Pad see iew -Spicy crispy chicken (a very good portion), and you have to be able to take spicy food -spicy crispy spare ribs (the same seasoning as the crispy chicken). -mango sticky rice -Thai iced tea -large screen TV showing live football matches from Europe, if you happen to be there during the day.

This is a good place for a quick bite of pretty good Thai food. It's kind of a no frills place but it's very clean and has some good eats. The Pad Thai was a little on the sweet side but addicting (we finished the whole thing quickly) and we also ordered a Cashew Onion curry with tofu which was nothing to write home about but was still very solid. The place was busy and there aren't a ton of tables, so if you come, you might have to hover for a little bit. I also found that the woman who helped us wasn't terribly friendly but not to the point where I wouldn't come back. One other issue, albeit minor, is that the cups for the water cooler were very tiny--with all the fish sauce and spice, you end up getting up and refilling your cup several times over the course of the meal.

My favorite Thai restaurant in Boston. I have taken all my friends there. Everyone I know loves the pad see you and the spicy crispy chicken. Their curries are also delicious, and the soups are great. Two Thai friends confirmed that it's authentic and agreed that it's their favorite place in Boston. You can't go wrong. Tons of convenient parking in the shopping center across the street next to CVS/Shaw's. The only thing that can spoil your visit here is if you forget it's cash only. Show those credit card companies who's boss.

It's fresh, yes. And it's reasonably priced. But honestly, I was totally underwhelmed by my shrimp curry and my bf's chicken dish. It wasn't disgusting or even bad, just totally bland and...meh. I'd definitely give Rod Dee 3 stars if it weren't so hyped, but as it is, I'm afraid I'll leave it at two. And never go back.

Super low key place - you order at the country, grab your utensils, sit at the table. The ambiance is unimpressive - it's very bright and spartan, and I have nothing to say about the service. But the food was quite good, reasonably priced, with some interesting options. I'd definitely go back. Also - cash only.

This was our first adventure at Rod Dee Thai and a nice experience. Food was very tasty, staff friendly and service fast! Great accommodating food allergies. Was a little disappointed with the amount of meat and veggies - thought it was enough for an average size meal, but it certainly didn't serve 2 people. Lots of rice, but that doesn't count! We had the pad thai, a special and green curry. Easy parking behind the restaurant.

My wife and I love Rod Dee Thai's food. It is the best Thai food we have had in the Boston. It is comparable to the average eatery in Bangkok or the various Thai islands I visited. Dishes E4, C3 and R2 are our favorites! Unfortunately, the quality of their food cannot make up for their horrible service. If you are going to Rod Dee Thai, these are the things you should know: 1) They make up their delivery area every night. Some nights you will call and they will deliver to you, other nights they will tell you "we don't deliver there but the Brookline Rod Dee Thai will", other nights they say they don't deliver to your location and hang up. 2) It is a cash only business. They do not accept any credit or debit cards. I've overlooked this in the past, because their food is so great. I just plan ahead. Both locations have independent ATMs (not owned by a major bank), which will let you withdraw money. I think the fee is $2 or $3 to use their ATM. 3) Most people who answer the phones cannot understand English well. You need to speak very, very slowly, when asking and/or answer questions or ordering. If you call, try to order with the item number-- I have spent over five minutes spelling out the name of my favorite dish before. If you are getting delivery, be prepared to spend a lot of time spelling the name of your street address. You will want to spend as little time on the phone as possible. The least stressful phone call goes like this: "Hello, pickup please. (What is your name and phone number?) John Smith and 617-555-5555. (What would you like?) C4, A3 and R2 please. (They will read back the entire order-- make sure it's correct!)." 4) If you eat at Rod Dee Thai but do not finish and want to take the rest home, they charge you for the plastic black and clear top containers that do not leak. They will not charge for the styrofoam containers (which will leak). 5) If you like your food spicy, don't even bother asking when you order for your meal to be "extra spicy" (other phrases can lead to misunderstandings). Just use the condiments that are (usually) out and available. If the cook does anything at all, s/he will sprinkle chili peppers on the dish when they finish cooking your meal. 6) Last night my wife went to pick up our usual order and it was to go. The condiments were not out in their usual spot (I guess they forgot to put them out that day), so she asked for a cup of the red chili sauce. They said that there is a $0.50 cent charge per tiny container of chili sauce but if you eat there, it is free (as it is with all their other condiments that are usually out next to the water cooler, napkins and silverware). My wife said, "OK, I'll eat here", so the person at the counter gave her the chili sauce, and my wife dumped it in her take-out container, closed the lid and walked out. Frankly, my wife and I have had enough of Rod Dee Thai. Their food is good, but their service is atrocious. We are tired of all their unreasonable hidden fees. We have overlooked it in the past, but we cannot anymore. If Rod Dee Thai did not have the best Thai food in the Boston area, we would have stopped going here long ago. Last night was our last visit. The Rod Dee Thai location in Brookline is more of the same. I prefer the Brookline location as they have an outdoor area. I would recommend looking for another Thai place close to where you live/work or, if possible, try our second favorite place, Dokbua Thai Restaurant, at 411 Harvard Ave in Brookline.

really solid thai food - they get the real thai classics right, as well as the americanized dishes everyone's come to love. if you do want to branch out, though, beyond curry and pad thai, get the boat noodles (3 kinds of pork, super savory broth), the thai sausage if they have it, or the seafood yum with sticky rice.

best Thai in Boston I love their Pad see you, Rad Nar, Tom yum noodle soup, indonesia fried rice with chicken, Pad Kra Pao. I LOVE two other things that are not on the menu : prik king (not sure if that's the right spelling) and the spice beef noodle soup.

If you're looking for Thai food, THIS is the place for you. Rod Dee has very good food for a low price. Whenever I come here, I always want to try something new, but realize that I cannot resist the greatness of the INDONESIAN FRIED RICE. That stuff is simply amazing. I don't know what's in the fried rice, but it definitely gets your taste buds going. Then the crispy chicken on the side! ALL topped off with a fried egg. Anyways, if you're more of a noodle type of person, the PAD THAI and the PAD SEE YOU are great options. BUT, if you're not, the fried rice is the way to go. oh yea, and it's cash only, so come prepared if you don't want to pay atm fees

Rod Deeee, how I love your Indonesian fried rice w crispy chicken and pad thai... I would have given this place five-stars if it wasnt for a rude encounter with the cashier last time I went. My friends and I arrived fifteen mins before their last call for a take out order. U could tell that she was agitated from the beginning, whether it was us walking in late or something else. The whole time we were ordering, she gave an unpleasant stare which made me feel very uncomfortable and almost offended. When we asked questions about certain items she snapped back the answers as if we were dumb not knowing what was in a specific item. The funniest thing about this incident was that when people after us ordered, she was smiley and very helpful. As if she had a thing against my friends' and my race (koreans)...cuz the people behind us were white and while I was ordering I was not rude to her. I usually interact with the guy cashier who is funny and kind. I hope that she just had a bad night cuz this incident made me kinda not want to go back. Anyway, besides this nasty incident this place is bombbb and their portions r huge!! AND they are on the cheaper side! (: one of my fav thai places in cambridge for sure!

Do this place (and Thai people) some justice and order something other than pad thai. Do you think Thai people live on a diet of pad thai and curry? Coconut milk only makes your butt grow larger. The food here is hands down amazing and incredibly authentic. Cash only. You order your food at the cashier, wait at a table, and they bring it out to you and leave you alone to dine in peace. This is how us Thais like it. No stupid polyester napkins and knives. Fork and spoon is how it's done, with essential thai condiments in little glass canisters. A lot of Thai restaurants tweak their recipes and dining styles to suit the likes of Americans. They don't bother with that here. They even offer dishes typically limited to mysterious "thai only" menus presented to native speakers. These dishes are not for whimps, but those bored of the usual dishes and adventurous foodies! For people who want something exotic and spicy- try the Boat Noodle Soup. Brendan (from below) has done an excellent job describing this noodle dish. I don't know any Thai restaurant in this country that dares offer this dish to non-natives. They also offer an excellent som tom (papaya salad) that tastes like the one back home, but apparently it's seasonal. If they're offering it, take it! For those less adventurous that want something different but tasty, perhaps the Kao Moo Dang, Pad Ka Na Moo Krob, Sukiyaki, or Bar mee Rad Nar (for those who like Rad Nar, but not the fat noodles). These are staples back home, but will not blow the roof of your mouth off. The house sauteed plates are also an interesting offering- most of these are your run of the mill thai cafeteria dishes. As a native, I really appreciate how this restaurant is expanding the goodness of Thai food beyond Pad Thai and Massaman curry. Thank you, Rod Dee!!

When you first walk in to Rod Dee you are taken a-back by the harsh lights illuminating the place; it feels almost like a hospital in the sense that everything feels so in-your-face. The other: the numerous signs indicating CASH ONLY!!! CASH ONLY!!! all over the place. It doesn't necessarily feel "un-inviting" but I wasn't blown over by comfort either. It felt "no frills". The food on the other hand is another story. This is some seriously good Thai! I'm all over the Coconut & Chicken soup and virtually ANY item on the menu. It's plentiful and extremely quick to come to the table. Lucky for me, because I could eat buckets of it! It always tastes fresh and always tastes yum. The fact that it's so cheap also helps my wallet as well as my tummy. I guess what overall prevents me from giving it 5 stars is the lack of courtesy when it comes the staff. If you order an appetizer and a meal, both come up at the same time. Sometimes you have to go up and get it, sometimes it's brought out to you at the table. I suppose it all depends on how busy it is and who is ringing people up, I guess? Granted, what else can you expect for such a cheap rate & cash only. I'm not being picky in the slightest! I definitely enjoy what I get. You have to steak out a seat pretty quickly as it is; if everyone felt warm and cozy and invited here then I'd never get to enjoy my soup! slurp

You'd think one would get tired of ordering from the same place more than once/wk but this could never be the case with Rod Dee. You just can't beat the quality, price, or quickness of service you get here. Like other reviewers, we're so obsessed with the few basics we always get (like the chicken kra prow, tom yum noodle soup, basil fried rice) that we've barely made a dent in their extensive menu. I'm sure there are many other gems in there.

  • Anita L.

I ordered 3 items: pad thai, green papaya salad, and the fresh spring rolls. None of them were especially good, but the worst item was probably the spring rolls. I've had spring rolls filled with carrots, vermicelli, and loads of basil. Rod Dee's spring rolls are mainly iceberg with 2-3 basil leaves and very little vermicelli so that was a disappointment. They don't refridgerate well either; after one night, the rice wrapper was very hard. The pad thai was okay. I think it helped that I was a massive pad thai craving. Again, Rod Dee seemed to be skimping here. It could have used more peanuts and was not spicy at all. In fact, it seemed as if all the spice went into the green papaya salad which was so spicy I had to eat it mixed into brown rice I'd cooked myself. I get the impression that Rod Dee is just an inconsistent restaurant. Maybe it's great some days but someone clearly wasn't paying attention when my food was being prepared and I wouldn't order again. If the Brown Sugar Cafe delivers to your area, try them instead.

Very crowded place on a Saturday night--had to wait a while for a table. The food was inexpensive and pretty decent. I had the basil fried rice, and it was mostly rice, but it was at least flavorful. There are better places in the neighborhood.

The Porter Square Pan-Asian Take-Out Consortium is now complete. Despite the blue neon sign that had been searing my retinas since its inception, the promise of Rod Dee had been a promise of glory, at least according to my roommate and some Best of Boston plaques. I ducked in on a Friday night hoping for some take-out, and smacked head-first into the new restaurant curse: a poor girl manning the register and the phones, a few poor chefs/runners in the back, phones ringing, impatient patrons milling, patience testing. There is no sympathy like the sympathy for a non-native-speaking counter girl getting yelled at by a doughy, obnoxious Cambridgian who is demanding the $3 reimbursement for his forgotten spring rolls. He's not wrong, but it ain't right. Rod Dee, please hire an additional person to answer the phones on Friday nights and spare your staff--and customers--this angst. Anyhoo, onto the food. The true measure of a good thai restaurant (Sugar and Spice, grab a pen) is their chicken coconut soup, which I'm pleased to announce that Rod Dee does DIVINELY. Not so much their ginger and scallion chicken, but maybe it's my own fault for ordering a non-soupy thai dish that just gummed the rice to the food, instead of something a little more kicky. Or, they could just serve the rice separately. So, Rod Dee, here's the Check List for Attaining Five-Star Glory (tm): -hire another person so I don't leave with a sympathy heartache -take credit cards -separate the rice and the dish -give receipts, so I actually know when my dish is being called -find a way to intravenously hook up your chicken coconut soup to my arm. Now, go get 'em, Tiger!

Cheezy decor and looks like a bit of a dive, plus the people at the counter were scant on English... HOWEVER the crispy duck dinner was the best Ive had in the US!

Easily the best Thai in the Boston area--with a cambridge and brookline location. Sit-in is better than takeout, with the added bonus of having the staff help you select one of many dishes. You could eat here daily and try something new every time--and DAMN is it delicious. Get the drunken noodles--a great hangover treat.

Mmmm... I've just returned from my fifth time eating at Rod Dee (well, I'm not reeeally keeping track). I love the fact that there is now a Rod Dee in Porter Square ALMOST as much as I love Thai food! ... And I love Thai food. The food is great, the service is super fast, and having eaten in and having ordered delivery, I can say that the quality is equal both ways. I do like the atmosphere of the place though -- comfortable, cheerful, spacious (although it can get quite busy in which case you have to stare down people for a table cause it's a free for all). And one last reason to eat in is that they serve yummy complimentary hot tea. Really good! (Rod Dee doesn't get a 5 star only because I've eaten a lot of Thai in Boston and I have to hand out that 5 star to Dok Bua in Brookline.)

I love Thai food and when its cheap, I love it even more. I heard of this place before and a couple of my friends and I decided to try it out...especially since they opened on in Porter and there's really not good Thai food in that area. The atmosphere is bright and its kind of a mix of restaurant and fast food feel to it. The place was clean and the furniture were bright and simple. So you basically order your food fast food style and I ordered a pad thai with crispy chicken and satay. The price was pretty good and cheap! The food is brought to your table by a staff. My food didn't take that long to make...but my friend's took a little longer than expected and we got the same dish. Anyway, the food was good although I've had better satay in other places. But for my pad thai, the portion was big and I was able to bring home the leftovers. The food itself was pretty good. Warm, not too greasy, and delicious. I think the best part was the price. Its like restaurant food but with fast food price. I'll definitely come back here to have some cheap, good, Thai food...especially since I'm a poor graduate student that's real tight on money. But if anyone is willing to pay for me, absolutely I will accept.

I get Thai food for the pad thai and appetizers, i don't typically get anything else. So I ordered the pad thai and i thought it was great! I am not a fan of very saucy pad thai and this one was perfect! Their curry puffs are good too, but a little too much dough. They don't take credit cards which is basically the only thing i use these days so that stinks. They do have a debit maching inside though, however if you are ordering delivery you need cash. My boyfriend however got the panang curry and he didnt care for it. He said there was too much coconut milk and something was just off. So hence the 4 stars, but if you are looking for a great pad thai - this is the place.

I can only speak to the quality of the food, but I was pretty happy with my takeout experience. My sister phoned in an order and it was ready and packed when I arrived 10 minutes later. We got pad Thai and green chicken curry. Both dishes were delicious and a great value for the price. I know my sister likes this place and I certainly prefer it to other Thai restaurants in the area.

For someone whose daily commute ends at the Porter Sq. T station, Rod Dee is absurdly convenient. I'm so glad to see a new Thai place in the area hit the ground running. I've always been too insecure to go into nearby Sugar & Spice because their ambience (as I've gathered through nervous side-glances through the window) makes it seem like you better have a date with you. Rod Dee, on the other hand, has this well-lit, expedient attitude that helped it shoot to the top of my take-out preferences. I've tried their Pad Thai and Pineapple, Pik-Pow, and Indonesia fried rices (a decent sampling). All were as good as any Thai food I've ever tasted, I might get around to trying the curries if I can tear myself away from continuously ordering the dishes I've already had. Its layout and atmosphere work for and against it in specific ways. The tables are minimalist, and the seating is oriented around these wall-length wooden benches that might be ideal for larger dine-in groups. The large space left between the door and the register make it simple and inviting for people to walk straight in and order/get their food, but awkward for those who've just ordered and want to loiter inconspicuously. Small parties (of one) look out-of-place here, so call in your order ahead of time, pick it up, and then eat it in your room!

  • Ben T.

Disappointing. I'd call this lowest common denominator Thai food. My noodle dish was a big blob of tasteless goop, awful. The pad thai was forgettable with nothing to recommend it. Even the soup was bad, perhaps made with a dreaded bouillon cube? And noisy. I agree with the others here who are baffled by the rave reviews.

  • Ojus P.

Overall, this is a decent place that has cheap prices and solid food with a great location right by the Porter T. But AVOID THE YELLOW CURRY. It was absolutely terrible. In my 1.5 years in Boston, I have only had 2 dishes that were too terrible to finish. One was the yellow curry here and the other was from Cantina La Mexicana.

A new take out Thai place in Porter Square which you can also sit in, right across to Suger and Spice Thai Cuisine. Food are not as carefully made as Suger and spice but decent. Dishes are much cheaper than Suger and Spice and other Thai restaurants around. Food came out very fast. A good place to go if you are in hurry to get some Yummy and cheap Thai food. P.S. They have heat there, but they don't have double doors, it can be cold if you sit next to the entrances in the winter.

Almost as good as the street food in Bangkok! Was also around the corner from my old apartment and a great value. Tied with Pad Thai Cafe in my book for the #2 Thai place in Boston. S&I is #1 for authenticity.

  • Aaron H.

Well, it's tasty Thai food, with quick counter service, mere blocks from the apartment. I often just go the ugly American route and order Pad Thai, but it and anything else I've gotten has been darn good and more than reasonably priced for the take-some-home portions. In terms of ambiance it's by no means a culinary destination--sort of like a spacious Anna's--but it's always a squeaky clean and pleasant place for a quick meal. What can I say? Porter has itself a solid go-to Thai place.

I'm so excited that Rod Dee is now a mere five minute walk from me! I used to go to the Fenway location weekly while in college. Great Thai food for a great price. This will now be my go-to Thai place in the area for take out.

  • Kartikeya S.

Are you ready to have a food-gasm? No, I mean really. I don't think I've been to a Thai restaurant that is more tasty than this one in my life. And to top it all off, its not that expensive! Yes, the ambiance is that of a bizarre cafeteria. However, the chefs in the back are quietly cooking up magic. The Spicy crispy squid here is AMAZING. Just the right hints of fresh red and green chilies along with a blend of garlic and ginger to coat the crispy golden fried squid. I cannot praise this dish enough. A MUST visit restaurant. Only draw back: I wish I could have a beer here too.

  • Sean R.

The food here is awesome. I always try one of the specials to vary things up, but I've never had a bad anything here. Really tasty and super friendly staff. However, get takeout because the dining area isn't very clean on the weekends and there's the oppressive fluorescent light cafeteria vibe. And no booze.

This place has absolutely stolen my heart. From the cute decor to the delicious and well priced food. I have never been disappointed with a selection there. Best to go with some friends and share dishes! The tom yum soup is wonderfully spiced while not being too spicy and masking the flavor, the pad see ew is excellently flavored, and the pad thai, well, there are no words.

Uh oh Sugar & Spice.... I agree with previous reviews that this place is 1000% better than sugar and spice. I love all the rice dishes, especially the ones that come with a fried egg! Very reasonably priced, seat-yourself establishment.

This place has the freshest Pad Thai I've had. What does it mean to be the "freshest"? You'll have to taste it to understand. The Pad See You is dang tasty too. So good, in fact, that we never order anything but the Pad Thai & Pad See You just because we don't want that 1% chance of not liking whatever else we would order. Anyone else notice that some of the best places are cash-only hole-in-the-walls?

Delicious. Knocks neighboring Sugar & Spice out of the water. If you've been inside, you've seen the nice wood tables & chairs, mod lamp chandeliers, and quaintly tackily decorated till. Rod Dee looks great on the inside, has the best (and most reasonably priced) Thai food in Cambridge-- but it's nestled in a depressing strip mall between a bad Indian restaurant, an H&R Block, and a decrepit Chinese take-out place that looks like a drug front for the mafia. Ok, I know Porter square isn't known for its eateries (although I think its ranking improved when the Uno's closed), but Rod Dee is your hidden gem. Monday night and you don't feel like cooking? Rod Dee. Friday night and you want cheap and moderately healthy take out? Rod Dee. As others have said, the noodle dishes are the best- pad thai, pad see you, pad kee mao. And yes, the will make them "brown person spicy" (I can say this, as I'm part of the club). The only time Rod Dee fell short of my sky-high expectations was when I ordered the tofu triangle appetizer. I was lured by the healthy-sounding name, but was disappointed when I found that tofu triangles really were just deep fried triangles of tofu. Then again, it was deep fried, so I'm not sure how sad I am allowed to be. If you're near Beacon Hill, have some Thai at The King & I- Anthony Bourdain approves.

Horribly rude service! Food was reasonable, but an extra charge for peanut sauce after dropping $30 for lunch? I think not... This is a fail!

Best Thai in Porter - way better than Sugar & Spice and Tamarind House. Really fresh Som Tum and the Spicy Crispy Squid was delicious. My friend had the Pad Kee Mau and loved it. The only problem is that it's drafty as hell. They could use a curtain by the door. But other than that, the addition of Rod Dee to Wok and Roll and Christopher's makes this stretch of Mass Ave pretty damn delicious.

This is my new favorite Thai place. Anything on their specials boards is good bet. The roast pork, and the Chaing Mai noodles are awesome. The Indonesian fried rice is fantastic (and just like Joey's used to serve). However, spicy is SPICY here. The green papaya salad is great but HOT.

I won't bother going into details about specific dishes at the restaurant because it seems others have beat me to it...but to put it simply- Rod Dee is the best Thai food in the Boston area!

So good! Rod Dee catered our event this week and it was amazing. Pad Thai, drunken noodles, delicious curry, it was all fantastic. I will definitely be checking them out again soon

I don't usually write reviews, but I loved this place so much I just couldn't resist. This restaurant reminds me of actual restaurants in Thailand. When you eat in, you order at the counter (very nice service), you get your own water/tea, and then the servers bring delicious hot food to your table. You don't have to leave a tip (which makes it really cheap), and the light and easy atmosphere allows you to really just sit and relax. It's sort of like a cross between a great cafe and a typical Thai restaurant. I love it. If you're in Porter Square, you have to try out Rod Dee. p.s. Rod Dee means delicious in Thai.

Good value. Seems like a great place to grab some quick Thai food, without having to be in a more formal, sit down setting. I thought that the Tom Yum soup was a bit oily and I didn't like how the Yellow Curry came pre-mixed with rice. In comparison to other nearby restaurants, I did enjoy the Pad Thai quite a bit (not too heavy). Generally, i think this is a good spot, but I wouldn't make it my 'go-to' Thai place in the neighborhood.

Having experienced rather lackluster pad thai in boston and being somewhat of a curry lover, I don't usually order pad thai over curry. But since the boyfriend was ordering curry, I thought I'd diversify and order pad thai so we can share our dishes. Let me tell you, Rod Dee's pad thai was freaking delicious. I had the chicken pad thai and the textures and flavors was just so right and tasty. I don't ever remember pad thai being this good. My boyfriend and I ended up fighting over my dish. It was a bummer that I had to share. Other points of interest: -Huge portions -Decor is nice and bright -Service is super fast -Staff is very friendly -You bus your own tables -It is cash only -Their menu is nice n cheap ($25 covered dinner for 3 people) For the first time in memory, I am craving pad thai over curry.. I'll definitely be back!

Affordable and delicious. It's also nice to find an Asian restaurant that offers brown rice (surprisingly, many don't). All the curries are flavorful and have a generous amount of vegetables.

I have just moved to the Somerville area and have quickly fallen in love with this place! The food is delicious, the prices are incredibly reasonable and the people that work there are extremely friendly and will customize any dish the way you want it. Also, a special shout out about their pineapple and basil smoothies - absolutely delicious!

After my first meh experience with Rod Dee, I've given them several more tries, and I like them more now. First, I actually went to the place (as opposed to ordering delivery), and I love the decor. It's so hip and contemporary. It feels like you're walking into a frozen yogurt shop. Not what I was expecting from a Thai restaurant, and I like it. Second, the staff is super friendly and happy. I'm still at 4 stars with the food, but I will continue going to/ordering from them. Also, still cash only (boo).

I love this place! Food's awesome and huge portions for the money. The people are nice but it can sometimes take a little time to get your food because they seem to be always busy (for good reason). The inside is little too bright for my taste, but that doesn't take away at all the big draw that they provide real dishes and silverware and not the wasteful disposable styrofoam or plastic kind like all the other places do. You order at the counter and they come to your table with your food, saving you on tip. Then after you eat you bus your own table by putting the dishes in the bin. I love this setup! There should be more places like this! Sadly I moved away a year ago and wish a Rod Dee Thai opens up in Ashmont especially after trying out places around here and being very disappointed. Don't move here for the restaurant scene.

Went on a Sunday evening, so it was not too busy. The Khao soi was delicious, and the Pad See Yew was also good. Service was minimal but decent. The food was prepared very quickly. The chilis and vinegar were an extra plus. Would love the tables to be less wobbly...

Cambridge FINALLY has good Thai food! Before, Spice was my standby (decent at least), but this beats it by a mile. Delicious, authentic, when I tell them I want my food spicy they make it SPICY, reasonably priced, delivers if you live nearby. Eating some of their som tam right now. It's just perfect - the right texture, very hot, just the right amount of peanuts and dried shrimp, not too sweet, actual chilies instead of dried crushed red pepper... The other dishes I've had have been good too. Atmosphere is cute, unpretentious, and clean, but you come here for the food instead of the ambiance.

  • Melissa D.

Loved it in Brookline, super excited it moved to Porter. The inside is super nice, quick take out. It is cash only which can be tough. I love their thai spring rolls and yellow curry w pineapple- but I don't get why they add potato. Everything is solid though- quick and easy. If you want your curry and rice separate you need to specify that!

    (4)
  • R G.

not the best thai food I've had, but a solid offering. the space is clean and bright. it's more of a take-out place. there is ample seating and real plates for those who dine in, but no full waiter service and it's definitely more of a casual, cafe environment. one minor food complaint: the curry is served over (a lot) of rice. all of the sauce soaks into the rice, so you have to eat it all to get the sauce. I prefer the rice to come separately so I can take how much I want and pour the curry over it. the guys who work there were very nice and enthusiastic. I would come back when in the neighborhood.

I ordered Pad See Ew here and it was good. Not the greatest, but definitely worth eating again. They had great curry puffs as a special. The only thing that kind of disappoints is that it's cash only, and on a cold night in the winter, walking to a restaurant, seeing it's cash only, then walking out and to an ATM and then back to the restaurant is no fun. I know, I know, the ATM is only a block away, but it was cold!!!

As a Cambridge local who had been regularly schlepping to the other side of the river for my Rod Dee fix, I am ecstatic that they have opened a location in Porter Square. The menu and quality are nearly identical to the Brookline location. The real gems here, in my opinion, are the less common menu items -- ones you won't see at most American Thai restaurants. if you're feeling like something more than Pad Thai your next time there, I urge you to try some of my favorites: - Kao Soi. This has to be one of the tastiest curries ever: pungent, sweet, with a strong hit of lime and wonderfully spiced. Filled with noodles and your choice of chicken or pork. (Usually I'm a pork guy, but I find chicken the better choice in this.) - Crispy fried chicken with lime and cream sauce. My friend has labeled this dish "crispy crack." It's some of the best fried chicken you'll ever taste, topped with a slightly sweet cream sauce, crispy fried basil, and whole chunks of lime (with the skin on). Biting into a small chunk of lime provides the perfect sour complement to the sweet sauce and savory chicken. - Boat noodle soup. This is not for everyone. It is a pungent, spicy, meat-based soup with three kinds of pork: sliced meat, meatballs, and crispy fried skin. I believe the soup is thickened with some sort of soy product. They claim dozens of ingredients in the broth, including pork blood, but don't let that turn you off; it's got a wonderfully unique flavor. Of course, you can't go wrong with the 'regular' curries, either. It's a great value, and will provide me many warm and delicious meals through the cold Boston winter.

Absolutely delicious!! My boyfriend and I were in the mood for Thai and went here on a whim and could not have been more satisfied. Big portions, lots of flavor, great prices. Will always come back here for more Thai!

I will have to say that, yes, I have been to more 'Authentic' Thai places in my life as a fatty, but let's be honest, most people wouldn't be able to take 'authentic' in all of it's freaky ingredient glory. 4 stars because the service is great here. I think the seating area has a lovely ambiance. The flavors were pretty good and it was inexpensive. So why complain? I ordered their basic pad thai and although I am used to more tanginess and spice, I did find it delicious nonetheless. I also tried their seafood pad Thai, which was equally tasty and their spicy red curry over brown rice. I must say that one was my favorite. I personally love spicy food, but if you are sensitive to chili ask for mild. This place is perfect for people who like Thai flavors minus the funkiness of certain ingredients. I enjoy the pungent flavor of fish sauce, but most people don't so places like this are great for the normal public masses.

  • Rachel D.

4 stars for the food, but giving it 5 stars for the price. The thai food is definitely decent. I prefer take out there because dining-in can get crowded and there is a bad draft in the winter.

I was so sad when the Fenway location burned down, but rejoiced when this location opened. It did not disappoint. A huge menu of fantastic and reasonably authentic Thai options. Chicken Pad Kra Pow is my current obsession, with just the right amount of heat that can be turned up or down upon request. I've also had the Rad Nar, which was similarly fantastic, and I've heard great things about the curries and the Pad See Eew as well. The best Thai food in Boston by a mile.

Nice relaxing and casual atmosphere. Great value. Looks clean. The menu is confusing though. It has specials in three different places.

Probably the best Thai place. Not that all the dish are good. But variety of choices that you could not get anywhere else. I usually try a new dish from "Thai Menu" or special of the day. Most of the dishes are good. Be adventurous, you will not be disappoint.

This place is a gem. A diverse menu full of a whole range of delicious thai cuisine, great prices, delivery times that beat the quoted estimate, and consistently awesome customer service. Maybe it's just because I go so often, but being greeted by name with a smile (and a guess at my order) every time could have me fooled that I live in a small town somewhere.

After hearing rave reviews, my boyfriend and I had to try this place. I hoped it would rival Chili Duck (favorite Thai restaurant in Boston, hands down). Our mistake was in trying Rod Dee's version of some of our favorite Thai meals. The som tum (papaya salad) was terrible here: grainy with really hot chili peppers, no lime taste, and the shrimp were gross and bizarre: little crunchy dehydrated-looking shells. Som tum is one of my favorite things ever, and I couldn't eat any of this one. The pad thai was okay, if a little sweet. We also tried the Indonesian fried rice on the recommendation of a friend and i thought it was terrible. To be fair, I didn't expect or enjoy the big piece of super-greasy fried chicken on top. The soup also had way too much oil/fat floating on top. I did love the mango smoothie (they were out of the other flavors) and the girl who made it informed me that it was her first one ever. Next time, i would go with that and the Kao Soi (?). It comes with a couple different components (noodles, cilantro, etc) and then you pour the spicy coconut broth over them and let it sit for a minute or two. I thought this was really good and would come back for it... just not anytime soon.

I give this restaurant rave reviews because it has been consistently excellent. The veggies are crisp and fresh. The dishes are authentic and they are very happy to make changes to the dish upon request. The service is GREAT for this type of restaurant. Place your order and they bring it out with a smile. The decor is minimal, clean, with beautiful lighting and a big window out onto the Avenue. REAL plates (and fun ones, too!) and silverware... no plastic. Bus your own table ... hey why not the meal was great. Sugar and Spice is fine if you want drinks and a waiter. There are times when that's what you want. But Rod Dee is really good... try it and you'll be hooked. Only complaint is cash only. Come on... take credit cards!!!

While I am sorry for the loss of Cambridge Music which used to be in this space -- I am SO HAPPY that Rod Dee opened here! I was a long-time customer of the Brookline branch of Rod Dee and was excited to see that the same chef was now in the kitchen in Porter Square. Great, fresh Thai home-cooking, where all the dishes taste different from each other -- not just the same bland Thai food that you so often find. Can't wait to re-explore the menu!

  • Bill K.

Disappointed. Tom yom soup was cloyingly sweet and served tepid as was the boat noodle soup. Panang curry was pretty good but not nearly enough to make me think of going back. Lots of fine alternatives in Cambridge, Somerville area.

Rod Dee has finally opened in Porter Square. Stopped by today for lunch and grabbed a beef pad see you. It was very good and consistent with the Brookline location. I have been waiting for them to open since I heard in July. The place is very bright and open and a great addition to Porter Square. I will definitely stop by again soon,

I had the Indonesian fried rice and pad see eew w/ crispy fried chicken. Both were extremely delicious! I wish I ordered a different meat for the pad see eew though. I didn't realize the Indonesian fried rice came with fried chicken. Food was great and very filling (I split the pad see eew with my cousin). Overall, delicious Thai food :D

  • A A.

ok food (will say "quite good" because there is no good thai food in Boston) but horrible service. Waited 45 minutes+ for take out and when they finally handed me the food, I asked them what took so long, the server just smirked, shrugged her shoulder. No apologies, no anything, just an attitude of "so? what can you do?"

  • Robyn B.

    (5)
  • Kattie L.

  • Olivia D.

Great price and quickness. The food differs from visit to visit, but it's usually pretty good. The curries aren't always great, often too sweet or watery. All the stir-fry's, fried rice and noodle dishes are better!

  • Tony J.

Food is really good. Their menu is really expansive, so you can try a lot of different things if you come here many times. They are cash only, however, so make sure you bring some cash. Come with a Thai person, and there will be some extra items available for you to enjoy. Much better than the other Thai places in the area.

  • Tammy T.

This place satisfies my Thai food cravings without taking much out of my wallet. It's not the best Thai food I've had, but it's quite tasty and filling for the price. Plus, free delivery!

  • D S.

I expected much more from the good reviews. Unfriendly service, mushy pad thai, crab rangoon was pretty but a hard shape to eat, tiny tiny water cups so you have to keep getting up for more water, and no condiments on the tables.

  • M L.

  • Amanda S.

LOVE this place. Seriously, whenever I'm in Porter, I eat here. Their food is amazing, and super random, but they have the best thai coffee I've ever had. I love this place and parking is super convenient in the parking lot across the street. If you love thai food, go to Rod Dee

Top notch food *FOR* the area. Take that as you will - deserves the stars compared to the other options. Their food isn't spicy though!

  • Susanna L.

    (5)
  • Sofi A.

We got delivery from here and it was great! Delicious tofu pad thai, vegetable curry, and vegetable tempura.

    (5)

    (3)

    (2)
  • Hailey B.

    (3)
  • Emily M.

    (3)
  • Alexis C.

    (3)
  • Stephanie W.

  • Shimstu S.

  • Hibah H.

Easy parking behind the restaurant.

really solid thai food - they get the real thai classics right, as well as the americanized dishes everyone's come to love. if you do want to branch out, though, beyond curry and pad thai, get the boat noodles (3 kinds of pork, super savory broth), the thai sausage if they have it, or the seafood yum with sticky rice.

Duck curry, enough said. Only complaint is this place is cash only, but they do have an ATM if you need it.

best Thai in Boston I love their Pad see you, Rad Nar, Tom yum noodle soup, indonesia fried rice with chicken, Pad Kra Pao.

  • Joanna F.

  • Alvin P.

  • Em C.

  • Mike M.

  • R G.

not the best thai food I've had, but a solid offering. the space is clean and bright. it's more of a take-out place. there is ample seating and real plates for those who dine in, but no full waiter service and it's definitely more of a casual, cafe environment. one minor food complaint: the curry is served over (a lot) of rice. all of the sauce soaks into the rice, so you have to eat it all to get the sauce.

  • Mint N.

Love it!

Average. Decent food. Great value for buck. Authentic. And portions are good; but I understand why they are so cheap - meat/protein to starch/rice/noodle ratio is quite low. But solid all around thai if u are in the area.

So My Thai we hope to have a second date with you soon!

great authentic thai food! they do most things right. but since their menu is quite extensive, some of the things on the menu were not that good. my impression was that they were better at fancy dishes than basic dishes. recommended dishes: pla-koong (spicy shrimp salad) larb chicken (spicy chicken salad with mint and other herbs) boat noodle (noodle in beef broth) rice with steamed/fried chicken tomyum noodle soup (noodle in spicy and sour soup) but they didn't get their basil dishes and drunken noodles right though. it was too dry, and sometimes the noodles were not properly cooked. but i went there very often. and 90% of the times i wasn't disappointed.
