My girlfriend and I stopped in after a day on Georges Island. We Had a few drinks while waiting for our table and enjoyed the complimentary Oreos, yup that's right, complimentary Oreos at the bar. When seated we enjoyed the best clam chowder I've had in Boston, Lobster Roll, and the delicious Seafood Diablo. Great portions and lively environment. I recommend this if your down in seaport!!

Love this place, the chowder is amazing and the servers are great! Prices aren't bad either, it's a great spot! I came here with friends from work last summer and then took my boyfriend back the other day. Only thing I would change is the drink selection, other than that this place is great! I'll definitely be coming back a bunch this summer

4.5 really! With every visit to Boston, we've stopped at Boston Sail Loft. After all, they have the best Clam Chowder Soup anywhere!!! Served in a coffee mug, it's just sooooo good! The Sail Loft is an old structure, sitting on stilts over the water. I think if you dropped a marble on the old wood floors of this one, it would roll towards the water. It's that old... and that good!!! This place is all about the views and the food. It's basically an old bar with old wood floors and old furniture and... who cares! Go, have the Clam Chowder and then the seafood pasta Diablo... it's one of the best I have ever had and I get it almost everywhere it's available. I even ask that they give it an extra kick (or two) and they are always happy to comply. This one is a special, not always on the menu. In fact, the last time we went it was 10 of us. I naturally asked. The manager came out and said how many would we want... to which 3 of us said "heck yah". They of course accommodated my request and, as always, was spectacular. They even give you a big bib... which you should wear. TRUST ME!!! This place screams Boston. I can't imagine even going to Boston and not having lunch here.

Came here with friends after visiting the aquarium on a saturday afternoon and in search of some food + mimosas & were so happy we did. We were told there was a 15 minute wait for a table so we grabbed a spot at the bar but were actually seated in about 10 minutes. The fried calamari is fantastic & some of the best we've ever had. The location of the restaurant is great, right on the water which makes dining indoors feel like you are outside. The other stuff we had (burger, chicken sandwich) was your standard restaurant fare, not bad but not the best. The bartender and our waitress were very friendly & the service was great. I would definitely recommend this as a place to grab lunch or dinner in the Boston harbor area or come back here myself.

A few friends and I came here for a Bridal shower party. Our reservation was for 11am, this past Saturday. As if we were still waiting for folks to come in, we didn't end up ordering until closer to 12pm. The staff seem to be ok with this - it wasn't hugely busy at this time of the day. At first our server seemed moody and just not very happy. She went about business and walked pass by a few times not making eye contact and refilling water coffee/tea as needed or when asked. She just had that vibe or not wanting to be there. Later on during our time there she did warm up and actually made conversation with us and sparked. Overall, i like this place. It's located about a 5 min walk from the Blue Line Aquarium stop, right on the Waterfront. If you sit by the windows on the side you can easily gaze outside and see boats docked. It's a very calming feeling. I had this view the very first time i was here a few years back. Today, we sat by the front, before you reach the bar. Noise level was ok. We sat in somewhat of a horse shoe so making conversation was easy. The establishment was clean. It's narrow so there isn't a great deal of extra room but it's still spacious enough to be comfortable. The bathroom was clean, though very small stalls and even the doorway isn't standard size. Big folks beware, as one of my friends would say, because you would always wonder if you might be stuck somehow... (half jokingly). The food: Orange Juice was a bit acidic. At first I thought it was just me but another friend confirmed the same. We all ordered from the brunch menu which came with a side of veggies, roasted red skinned potatoes. I ordered the Steak and egg - medium rare. Friend to my right ordered the Salmon. To her right ordered the Lobster omelette. The guest of honor ordered the poached egg minus the Canadian bacon. Next to her, french toast. And our last guest also ordered the steak and eggs - rare. Everything on that plate was good, except for the Steak. It was a good size although perhaps because of its thickness, or lack thereof, (about 1/3 inch) it cooked pretty fast but my steak was more than medium - it was medium well. There was no pink left. My friend who ordered the rare got the same steak as mine. I had a taste of the lobster omelette and it was quite good!! I didn't get to taste anything but everyone else said their food was really good. Needless to say, we were stuffed. Aside from the above, the brunch also came with a choice or a mimosa, or a Bloody Mary. Since i still had orange juice, along with the friend next to me, she asked if she could just get Prosecco instead, to which the server said no problem so i opted for the same. I expected about half a glass but instead, she brought over an entire little jug enough for an entire glass so we could make our own. Nice! Total bonus points right here! i had two mimosas! Lastly, service. The mood definitely changed. Initially it was just a routine walk around and grumpy looking face. But eventually, service got better and better. We were there for nearly 5 hours and no one rushed us to pay the bill or leave. Even after we paid we sat around for awhile and just talked. This to me and my friends were extremely nice considering most places would have been giving you looks and ushering you to go. For this reason only I gave it an extra star and a half. I wished there was a half star system but alas, i can't give it a five. I do want to come back and try other brunch menu items though so hopefully i get to update this review with an even better one! :D

Normally I just go here for drinks when I'm looking for a more casual night of drinking more than I should with my buddies. Recently had the food here and it's great. Clam Chowder is a solid choice and so is the Turkey BLT.

EXCELLENT clam chowder (that is what brought us here) and that is a biggie for me. Went with a group of 12 and they handled us quite efficiently and the food was very good overall and all enjoyed their dinner and drinks. We had all kinds of dinners after almost all had clam chowder for an appetizer. Not very fancy, but what I expect for a place like this on the water. I like the casual eating atmosphere. I plan on visiting again on the next trip to Boston shortly.

There are a few times in life where a meal is so perfectly crafted that everything just seems right with the world. Lunch today was one of those times. The Buffalo chicken sandwich was large and zesty. The fries were hot and crispy. The Diet Coke was fizzy and frosty. And our waiter Manny was attentive, friendly, and had a great smile... And he gave me a refill on my Diet Coke. All of this in a blizzard with a water view. Thought I had died and gone to heaven...

I'm reviewing this only as a bar, though I feel I can comment on the restaurant atmosphere as well. I met up with a date here for drinks on a Saturday at 9pm (in August). We decided it was too loud inside and instead moved to the deck outside. Drinks were reasonably priced for the area (around $6 beers). The deck was nice but small, and I doubt its much use after around the middle of September. It's a little noisy inside but obviously that's fine sometimes. Anyways nothing special in my experience. I do want to come back for food at which point I will update my review.

This is a really cute restaurant located right on the harbor. There is a small deck that you can stand out on, but unfortunately no outdoor seating. They do have many large windows that look out onto the water. I had no issues with the service, but was pretty disappointed in the food. My friend and I both had the lobster roll with fries, and we agreed that it was just ok. The lobster and fries that came with it was not very flavorful. My husband really enjoyed his stir-fry.

I love the clam chowder! Came to this place 2 yrs ago when visiting and now I live in Boston and had to have it again. It never disappoints and its the best chowder i ever had!

Amazing clam chowder, and I don't even like chowder! My wife heard the chowder was amazing, so we ordered a cup. She was so impressed she had to have me try. Ive tried chowder in the past, and never had a taste for it. But theirs was so delicious! My cod sandwich was tasty, and the fries were up to par. The service was great, very accommodating. The owner was even walking around talking to the guests. Overall a great experience. I highly recommend this to anyone, local or visiting.

We had a pretty decent meal here but I just can't bring myself to give more than 3 stars. Service alone would be 5, but I weight my ratings heavy on food. Our 2 year old was with us and in a very foul mood, and our waitress was super patient with her. Brought us all kinds of random stuff to keep her happy and even talked with here for a bit (turns out she's also a teacher and great with kids!). So yea, service was fantastic. The food on the other hand was a little disappointing. I had read reviews raving about the fish and chips and was really looking forward to them. However they were less than spectacular. In fact, not even that great. Breading had no flavor, fish was only somewhat flakey, and the tartar sauce was inedible. Blah. On the other hand my wife had a Lobster roll and it was pretty fantastic. Hard to screw those up though so not too many bonus points.

The Clam Chowder is great. The service and decor sucks. The place is kind of ratty and there were flies flying around when I ate there. Not only did the waiter seem to forget about us but he also never brought bread for the table that everyone else got. I used to be a waiter so I always give the benefit of the doubt and never harp on the service, but this was just ridiculous.

    (2)
  • Kirk L.

The. Best. Clam. Chowder. In. Boston. I could add that they sling a great burger and sport a beer list filled with local favorites, but really, look no further than the chowder. Order a bowl and thank me later. Seriously, go right now. I'll wait.

The service was slow and the waiter kept apologizing and saying the kitchen was backed up. The food was not impressive and service was terrible. They kept getting our orders wrong and coming out with the wrong dishes

We had a reservation but when we arrived the table wasn't ready and we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. We ordered two shrimp cocktails but when it arrived they brought two shrimp. We inquired and the waiter said he forgot to mention they sold the shrimp separately, even though it says otherwise on the menu. Halfway through our meal we ordered to go (3 lobster mac and cheeses) and the waiter asked us what dressing we wanted and if we wanted the same on for all three. The service was slow, and once it arrived there was only one lobster mac and cheese. The waiter said he had only written down one.

Excellent value for your money with a water view, also an outside deck. Cost of food is less but tastier than other establishments on the same street, and service is fast. Family owned and run business (30 years). Unless you have a reservation, plan on waiting especially on the weekends. This is our go-to place on Sunday afternoons.

Awesome clam chowder!!! Nice location right on the water with beautiful boats and harbor. Nothing fancy. Just good quality seafood.

When I chill in the North End, this is one of my hang out bars. The stools have no backs so it does get pretty tiring if you hang here for a few drinks. Aside from that, the TVs are not ginormous so it can be tough catching the scores. They serve American Pub food which they do a pretty good job of.

  • Nate W.

Fun crowd of all ages. Not pricey considering it's on the water. It's been around for years. Good service. Kinda crowded simply cuz of the floorplan. I guess it qualifies as a dive bar for the area.

As the 200th review of the Boston sail loft I feel it's my obligation to express my complete satisfaction with this place. I was with 6 buddies on a work related trip and we traveled into Boston. Being from out of town I pulled up yelp and started to look for places to go. Somehow I was trusted with choosing our destination that was to start our night on the town. So I bring the boys here and we are greeted by smiling faces of the staff who happily inform us of some of the basics (what is served where, which seats are seated and which are first come etc. etc.) It was a beautiful Friday evening so it was bustling but we managed to get some seats at the bar. The bartender was as good as you could ever ask for (the guy from Oswego, NY) the view was of the inner harbor with docked boats and you could smell the ocean. The outside deck was visible from the bar so it was fun to people watch while sampling the local brews. Then we were seated for dinner right by a big window looking out to busy Atlantic ave and let me tell you the people (girl) watching was top notch. Our waitress was beyond amazing in every way imaginable. Then we sampled probably everything on the menu, mostly seafood but let me tell you it was all fantastic. From the chowder to the calamari, mussels and shrimp. Everything was on point and fresh and delicious. The prices. Prices were fair. And by fair I mean perfect. Not cheap cheap but not you're on the water at a great place we are going to stroke your wallet. They were great prices on everything. Boston sail loft, thank you for a great experience. We will be back.

I am giving this a 4 star review, but I want to make it clear in the beginning that this is not a gourmet restaurant, but a local little gem on the waterfront next to Lewis Wharf. There are so few places that have a water view, good food, casual atmosphere, along with friendly service all in one package. This visit my husband had the lobster roll that was all fresh lobster and plenty of it along with tasty french fries and I had a delicious boiled lobster. We sat at the bar next to a gentleman who had a shrimp dish that he said was delicious and also told us he comes in from the west coast weekly and hits this restaurant every visit for their fish dishes. I do wish that they would pay more attention to attending to the ladies room and keeping things a little more ship shape. Oh,yes, I almost forgot that sitting on the bar is a cookie jar full of my favorite cookies....oreos! Going to try the clam chowder next time!

A fun restaurant at the marina with a good energy and not horrible food. The view is very nice and it's an easy walk from tourist central at Faneuil Hall. The food is so-so, the staff is very nice and service is okay - nothing extraordinary but not bad either. The bar is long and narrow so not a great place for a crowd to form but plenty of seating if you want to pull a stool up and enjoy. Good place for a family dinner and children. All in all, it's A-Ok.

  • Tiffani G.

Amazing is the best way to describe this place! The service was friendly, and prompt. The seafood was so fresh, and had the most amazing flavor! We were able to sit near the window overlooking the harbor, which only added to the experience. We will definitely be back!

So so full! I am originally from Boston, so when I come to town, I have a list of must haves to eat before i go back to Florida..one of them being Fried clams with the belly. Well, these did not disappoint! Right on the water, this place has awesome atmosphere..almost like you could be in Gloucester..service was fast and friendly. started with a cup of clam chowder, so thick the spoon could stand straight up in it..and so filling, I could have stopped there, but again, I had to have my fried clams. A nice big plate of clams and french fries came to the table. Perfectly crisp and hot..my only wish is they barely give any tartar sauce, but I am sure if I had asked I could have gotten more, just not sure why they give such a tiny amount to begin with. After only eating the clams, I was so stuffed, left the fries and needed to be carried home..nothing like good old fashioned new england meal to make you all warm and fuzzy

Got a really good, hot, overflowing bowl of clam chowder for about $6 and change. (Just get the cup if you plan on eating anything else.) Also got an appetizer sampler that was on special fried calamari, cajun fried shrimp, and potato skins. Everything was very good. Battered to perfection, not too greasy. Cajun shrimp was not overly seasoned. My friend got the Sautéed Seafood Portofino which had nice big fresh scallops, shrimp and other goodness. The restaurant is not big and I probably would make a reservation for larger parties. Not a super extensive menu but good prices for good, fresh seafood.-April 2014

Hadn't eaten here in 20 years and it's still great. Went for a late lunch on a Saturday while we were at the Boston Yacht Haven. Chowder is the best! Sandwiches were great and the seafood was great.

Asked around for the best clam chowder and was told to come here. Everyone was right. The chowder was right on with the expectation. Also had a lobster roll which was great too. The only thing holding back a 5 star rating is the customer service. It wasn't bad. Just not excellent.

Nice location and pleasant atmosphere... Expected it to be busier... Chowder was good not great.. Lobster roll was also good not great.. Disappointed in the French fries and the service was just ok... Average lunch .. probably wouldn't go back.

I made reservations for the restaurant on Valentines day, and despite the busy evening, the service was impeccable. We were seated immediately and the servers were fantastic. Great customer service! As for the food and delivery, the food came out 10-15 after our bread and appetizers. The fish and chips were simple yet seasoned to perfection. My girlfriend got the lobster mac n' cheese and almost scarfed the entire meal. She was thoroughly pleased. I was completely satisfied with everything about this quaint, humble, and perfectly located establishment. Only 3 blocks from Fanneuil hall and I will be coming back here every time I go into Boston!

Great location, great view, great scene and food. Stopped here one evening for a meal. Had the clam chowder and the clam strips. The clam chowder was really nice. A bit loaded with too much dill seasoning for my taste but very substantial and creamy. The clam strips were simply wonderful. Very lightly breaded and fried to crispy perfection. Not greasy or fatty at all. Very very nice. Had a few pints served by a friendly bartender. Would definitely stop in again.

I have been here a couple times. Great place. First time I went I had lunch and had the swordfish sandwich which was delicious. Last time I was there I got the lobster special which came w/ fresh mussels. It was outstanding. The service is also great our server couldn't have been nicer and the food came out pretty fast. Everything is fresh and it's not and obnoxious Boston tourist trap. This place is worth a visit. I would go back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice seafood meal in Boston.

Very cool place. Has a ton of potential but food is just ok. Fried food was way too greasy and house salad was best thing I ate but it was falling off the plate. Super small plate, not because of large portion. Staff was nice enough but I would go back

    (3)
  • Derek E.

Portions are large, food is OK; however, their clam chowder is fantastic, don't miss it. Service was very good, in addition they have a very nice view with large windows right on the water. Otherwise the place did not really stand out to me. If I could I would give them 3.5 stars; solid basics. If I ever go back it will be for the clam chowder. Seems like a good hangout bar.

  • Corey Ian Z.

While I am not a huge fan on fish, I am a fan of their clam chowder. It is by far one of the thickest and most flavorful chowder I have had. The fresh dill adds a wonderful element. The cup is always overflowing with soup. I would go big and go for the bowl!

Best Clam Chowder, bar none, hands down..... This is the ONLY place to get clam chowder in Boston...Thick, rich, creamy, generous amount of clam. We visited Saturday night, was told the wait would be 40 minutes. Enjoyed a drink at the bar and we were seated within 25 minutes. This may not be the trendiest restaurant on the waterfront but if you are seeking quality clam chowder, lobster or fried clams, this is the place to go. I ordered the fried clam platter; clams are perfectly seasoned, battered and fried to perfection and are accompanied by a generous portion of fries and cole slaw. Honestly, the fried claims are so good, it would not matter what else was on the plate! . They have a small deck but get their early if you plan on enjoying a drink outside on the deck as it fills up fast on a summer night. The bar staff and servers are always friendly and efficient. It's amazing how well they navigate this place given how narrow it is. The Boston Sail Loft "represents" when it comes best clam chowdah in Boston

  • Rick H.

Sorry, just average. Disappointing for the North End of Boston. 3 dinners, one cold, clam chowder blah, Lobster mac and cheese uses cheese wiz. Seafood Trio ruined by crappy sauce. Wast of money.

Thing is, the interior of this place is really sh***y. If it was not for a friend insisting I try it, I would have walked out. It looks like a run down dive bar in the middle of Nowhere, USA. At least it was clean. Bathrooms were questionable though. Ew. Sat towards the back with a water view. Ordered the clam chowder which was reaaaaaally good and oh so perfect on such a cold day. It is just as photographed here. My husband ordered the seafood pasta diablo which surprised me given the appearance of this place and it was outstanding! I would have given it 3 stars but then I think of the food I had and I just cannot. I had a Stella beer mug on draft with a fried fish and chips. That was good as well. Very fresh and not too much batter on the outside of it. All in all, I do recommend this place, just don't expect the interior to impress you.

My brother and I were visiting Boston for the day and we wanted a place that wasn't too touristy. I was glad we found the Sail Loft! They had delicious clam chowder and warm bread. My brother ordered the lobster with muscles. I got the appetizer of muscles to go with my soup. Their beer choices were ok with both local and domestic taps. Our server was very attentive as well. Next time I am back in Boston I will stop by!

Seafood does not get much better. Start with the chowda...of course. I had the blacked swordfish for my first visit. Then mussels on the next visit. Of course I had to go back for the lobster. A fantastic little restaurant right on the harbor near Lewis Wharf. Great for lunch, and dinner. Extensive bar and wine list. Boston doesn't get much better. Highly recommend!!!!

The clam chowder is awesome! Super thick and loaded with dill, some chunks of potatoes and clams (however not that many clams so for me that was a plus). You can get a pint or quart to go, and they will give you cups and spoons to share. I HIGHLY recommend doing this on a nice day. There are benches right outside of the restaurant that you can sit on, or you can walk about two minutes left out of the restaurant (past American Joes) and sit in a little park on benches or under a pergola of wisteria and people watch and enjoy the view of the water.

In Boston for the weekend (up from the Baltimore area) to attend a concert. Stopped in at the Sail Loft while meandering along the harbor. With other more glamorous locales along the harbor, it would be easy to pass this by, but we stopped in for lunch. Renee did a great job grabbing our order and we received our food in a fast and timely manner. She was also very knowledgable of the local beer selection and a pleasure to have as our waitress. And of course, the clam chowder was exceptional! We will surely be back if ever in this area again.

I've been going here since I was a kid. These days I only get to hit this place for lunch every once in a while, and I always get the same thing: cajun fish trio. Always very good. It's a little tricky to give it 4 stars given the places it competes with in boston, but to give it 3 would be calling it average, and it's better than average!

  • Jeff D.

The Sail Loft is old-school. I've never eaten here but they serve a nice choice of beers at a reasonable price. Bonus: The jar of Oreo cookies sitting on the bar. To our delighted surprise Oreos go VERY well with beer. Who knew?

I came here with a group of 12 on a Saturday night (which was a huge graduation weekend in Boston) and the service here was the most accommodating I've ever experienced. Not only is a group of 12 obnoxious because of its shear size, but we requested to have separate checks and the server was so friendly and helpful. She ensured that we were all able to pay how we wanted and pair up with whoever. Ok, the food is tasty, but it's not the best clam chowder I've ever had. It was delicious, but not nearly enough clams to be called clam chowder. The chowder part was amazing though. And the potato skins were a heart attack on a plate, but incredibly delicious. I absolutely love the location of this place and the atmosphere. Right on the water, in between the North End and Faneuil Hall and strikes a balance between dive-y and classy. My kind of place!

Our last meal before leaving Boston, and just found this place by accident (as we always seem to do). The one thing we hadn't yet had and were dying to have were some lobsta rolls! And boy, did we find them! Luckily it was on special that night (not a part of the normal menu) and we were more than pleased. Huge succulent pieces of lobster, overflowing on a toasty roll. We couldn't have asked for anything better. We of course tried a cup of the chowder and it was some of the best we had. Great location (right on the water) and ambiance too. Loved this place.

One of my favorite spots in the area! The chill atmosphere & amazing clam chowder draw me back every time. The Sail Loft is an awesome place to grab lunch or have a dinner date. The place is fairly small but cozy, the owner is really nice, & the juke box is a definite plus (I believe $1 for two songs) with both oldies and new tunes. Setting is pretty casual, and I'm always huge fan of a place with windows everywhere & being on the water. Its a close walk to Faneuil Hall but a lovely escape from the tourists. So, FOOD. ++CLAM CHOWDER IS A MUST. its creamy, delicious, and just perfect. if you're a tourist, skip faneuil hall clam chowder. its expensive, and just subpar compared to the one at sail loft. even to go the clam chowder is amazing. ive been to sail loft at least three times & ive always gotten it & its never failed. ++Baked potato skins are the best I've ever had. - As for the lobster roll, I'd pass. I don't know if it was just personal opinion but I wouldn't recommend it; granted, it was the first lobster roll i'd had in ages. - Calamari. Yummy, but nothing I'd rave about. Its not as fried as other places I've been to but the squid is preferable. + Beer on tap was good.

Great chowdah - maybe the best in Boston. The service was good, but we had to wait a while because they put a take out order ahead of us even thought the place was almost empty. pretty frustrating - waitress apologized for the delay. I was still hungry.

I came here today for the first time and had a great time! I have friends who come here at night but I came to enjoy the water and nice weather. The one downside is I wish that Sail Loft would create a bigger deck outside w/tables and chairs but I appreciate the small deck w/standing room for when you have to wait for a table. We were told it'd be 15-20 minutes and it was only $10! woo. We got 2 Moscow mules @ the bar and they were strong and only $6! I have never heard of a $6 drink in this part of Boston so that was exciting. My friend and I both ordered the turkey club sandwich -- our go to food option -- and I had high expectations because it is advertised as "Boston's Best Turkey Club" which in my opinion, Is a strong statement! But, it was good. The turkey was clearly fresh and not deli meat and was nice and thick. Also, this was the neatest turkey club I have ever had! It didn't fall apart at all and was great. The best part? Their onion rings. You can sub onion rings for $1 and they were great. Unlike many restaurants, they actually have homemade onion rings which are so much healthier tasting and superior to frozen ones. 5 stars for the onion rings. It was nostalgic of the restaurant I worked in during high school. Our waitress, Stephanie -- easy name to remember since it is mine! - was sweet. The waitresses here are young and cute. Stephanie was very cute and friendly. Also, she was pretty good. At one point my friend and I noticed how the waitresses seemed to literally be running around and they all had the same running gait. It was funny but I appreciate a place where the waitstaff knows how to hustle! Overall, I had a great experience and will def go back when I want another nice, low key, affordable lunch on the water!

"The best fish n chips in town!" or so I thought. What I really like about this restaurant is the location, the decor, and the service. The service was absolutely wonderful. The clam chowder was great and even my bf (who won't touch seafood with a ten foot poll) was liking it. I ordered the fish n chips and it was really good but I wouldn't say the best. I really liked the one at Intermission Tavern. Like I said service and view are outstanding and food isn't bad.

If you like seafood, cozy restaurants, and a great atmosphere, this place is for you. So first of all, if you are early for a reservation, or just waiting for a table, they have a great little deck that is right over the water near Long Wharf, where you can drink your drink of choice, and look into the harbor. I have never had a bad meal here (four times now), and every family member, friend, or colleague that I have brought here have always left happy. The staff is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and.... This is legitimately the best cup of chowder I have ever had. I have only lived in the Boston area for just over 3 years, but I can say with the utmost confidence that this is the best chowder you will ever experience. It is thick, creamy, and packed with flavor. Hands down, one of my favorite restaurants in Boston.

Awesome lobster roll! Reasonable prices and no wait time on a busy afternoon down in the North End. Our group rattled off a bunch of restaurants recommended by our cab drivers and hotels and we were told they were all too touristy and they recommended the Boston Sail Loft instead. We're glad we went! Definitely a fan!

some of the previous reviews for this place are funny.. "the whitest place in Boston" lol. That may be so. However we walked in twise on our trip in dirty shorts and sweaty wife beaters and nobody gave us trouble OR any looks. LOL And my friend isnt exactly "white". The layout is ok...some tables in the front and back, and small tables and stools along the bar...nothing fancy. The first time we were there we were sitting in the front right next to the window just looking down into the bay and checking out the wicked big jellyfish floating around. We def dont see that from home. We also had a decent view out over the water. It was nice. What attracted us here was the offer of decently priced UFO heffe on tap...and they did not disapoint. On our first visit we just got some pints, burgers and onion rings and all were good. The onion rings were VERY good actually. Definitely hand made and nice and crispy. They went well alone and on top of my burger. On our second trip we had more pints and the popcorn shrimp. The shrimp were def fresh battered and were very good. The tartar sauce was really good...being from NJ I dont get to have REAL tartar sauce often...just the mass produced crap they have at the fast food places that sucks. The pints were nice and fresh and as I said reasonably priced (at least compared to what were used to at home). We'll prolly be back again if we're in town :)

Great place for a drink especially if you can make it outside on the deck. The harbor views and beer are a reason to come here especially if you want to grab a drink in the north end. The food however is a different story, the chowder is about average along with the other food. It is typical touristy Boston pub food. I recommend coming for a drink to enjoy the view at happy hour in the summer and if you are really hungry don't expect much. Good Bar scene

Oh how the waterside situation instantly grants appeal. Tack on well drinks for $5.50 and you've got a totally viable, completely plausible end destination to your (blank)day festivities. Did I mention the free Oreos? Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING replicates sheer ludicrousness like leaving the packed shack upon Friday night's closing to be greeted by a river of chocolate sandwich cookies tossed along the sidewalk of Boston's historic North End. Black gold, Texas tea. Postscript description: I've only been here to drink. They have food, sure, and I'll bet it's scrumptious. The table service, even amidst severely drunken revelry, is on point. Quite the decent spot, with only the lack of a real identity (do deck shoe dens really demand doormen?) maintaining the rating at a strong three.

If you go to the sail loft, make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. This is primarily a local bar full of young professionals from the North End. Said professionals also enjoy getting completely smashed on Friday and Saturday nights. But everyone here tends to be very playful, friendly, and mature when intoxicated. Make sure you order your drinks "tall". Which means they get served out of a 20 oz. pint glass instead of a high-ball glass. So it's almost twice the booze and it only costs $1 more. This is a great place to throw down a bunch of drinks after a hectic week. You can bet your bottom dollar that everyone will be singing along to Journey on the Jukebox at last call. Food-wise this place is nothing special. The one great deal is the twin lobsters for $31.95

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, this was one of the few places on the harbor that did not have a wait. That should have been our sign. The clam chowder was decent but my steamed mussels were cold and chewy. Service left a lot to be desired. We had to ask for napkins, then ask for silverware, then ask for water refills.

Came up for the weekend with my friend, locals recommended this place, now i know why.. Calm chowder is the best!!! Fresh seafood daily unbelievable food.. This place is to die for! Hands down the best seafood by far in Boston.

Great bar overlooking the water. Place was pretty packed during late lunch/early dinner. Looked like mostly locals. Super helpful staff. Only had a shrimp cocktail and a couple beers. I nice find on the water that is not touristy at all. Good for families or bar goers. Would return to have a real meal.

Overall this is a decent place. There is the good, the bad, and the wierd. Pros: There is no cover. This is a huge pro because I am ethically opposed to paying a cover for the opportunity to be a patron. Also significant because I can seldom review places that charge a cover, as I do not generally go to such places. They are removed from the faneul crowd. This is also a big pro because it is slightly outside the radius of the sticky people crowd. However, this is definately still the collar wearing crowd (more on that later). There is an outside deck. Decks are great when you want a little air. Smokers also smoke on the deck. The ladies who smoke tend to be easier as a whole, so centralizing them on a small deck may make your job that much easier (pun intended). You can also order drinks from the deck through a sliding window, which is nice when the place busy and everyone is trying to push their way to the inside bar. The staff is reasonable. It can get very busy on weekends, but the staff is not a collection of 18 year old meat heads on a power trip. Cons: They are not barfully responsible. There is not a single beer that is cheap for those times when you want to stay a while and relax. This is a big con. The bathrooms are awful (at least the mens, can't speak for the womans). There is one stall (the floor usually covered in pee and/or diaherra), two urinals, and one sink, all right next to each other in the span of about 6 feet. It is a dong fest. It is impossible to use the sink without risking splash back from the urinal that is literally right next to you. The layout of the place is awful. Before I go on I should mention that the physical location greatly limits any interior changes. The layout, and the bathrooms, probably can't be fixed where they are (it is a thin, narrow set up with the kitchen in the back). Anyway, it can be very difficult to get to the back when it is busy because the main corrider (only corrider actually) is crammed with people. The bar spans the central corrider, and of course, people form around the bar for easy access. Having to push through people can also get uncomfortable and leads to unnecessary contact. This actually seems to be a pro for some of the north end skirts who come here. Sometimes they push their lady parts into you as they pass. I think this bar must attract women who like to do this because it happens frequently. The male crowd is definately the collar wearing type, even popped (you will see it if you come here enough). They seem to be slightly older than the fanaul type, and as a mentioned seem to be a little less sticky, although creepy. They must also be aware of the women who come here with the bumping their lady parts into you as they pass fetish. The guys seem to intentionally raise their elbows into the lady parts that pass to sayisfy the girl's fetish, but then immediatly apologize after the girl has already passed. Yes, some of the girls who come here are a bit wierd with this fetish. And some of the guys are happy to oblige by assisting. The whole thing is a bit wierd to me. I wish they had a larger corrider, but what can you do. Overall this place is reasonable, but I can't get over the lack of offering a single cheap beer, and the awful layout. However, the subtraction of 2 stars is primarily the lack of barful responsibility, there really isn't much space for a better layout. Although they really need to do something with the bathrooms.

Chose this place over Legal Seafood since a local told us their prices were reasonable and our experience at Joe's American the night prior sucked. We had a great lunch and it was very family friendly. Family owned and the owner was visiting with the tables. Service was excellent even with very young servers. The bread is awesome and they bring u 2 loafs out right away. Clam chowder was delicious, kids chicken strips and fries were so good, the wife and I were eating them. We also ate a great Caesar salad and the fish n chips. Fish was very good cod but could use a thicker/crunchier batter. They have jars of Oreo cookies along the bar that the kids loved. No outdoor seating but lots of windows and right on the water. If you want good seafood At a reasonable price go here.

Great bar, preppy vibe, casual enough but not sloppy. If you want to sit and eat, go for it. Friendly young servers, mostly, and a standard clam shack menu plus some more refined dishes. This is an upbeat, loud and often packed place, so plan accordingly.

Clam chowda was great, probably one of the best I've had in my life (and I really like clam chowder). For the fish and chips, the fish was yummy, extremely fresh but the fries were limp and soggy for everyone at the table. Fish came in pieces so if you like it to be one whole fish, go elsewhere. We kind of wish everything was fried to be a little crunchier, but I would return for a second try. They had about 7 beers on tap. Those who give this place low stars who have not tasted the food here should give it a try. They at least had good-sized portions.

Great location, with a laid-back atmosphere. It was a beautiful day and the windows let in a nice breez. Music is playing, but not too loud, so you can carry on a conversation easily. The calamari was great, and the fish sandwich was good. I would definitely go back.

We've been to the Sail Loft at least 15 times and we will continue to eat here. The Clam Chowder is the best I've had. Loaded with everything that makes it good and dill put's the chowder top of my list! Great service, atmosphere and location. Sandwiches and salads are excellent as well as pretty much anything I've had on the menu.

Last time I was here I was freezing my butt off. Fast forward to a beautiful autumn day with sailboats coming into dock, the Pat's game on TV and a comfortable seat at the bar. Service is always great with a friendly staff, great appetizers ( a bit on the heavy side but live fast die young) and a wonderful atmosphere. Great place to hang out in the cold weather but even better when it is nice out. Love the smell of the salt air coming through the open windows.

Reasonable prices, good music, and huge portions of fresh seafood. I went to the Boston Sail Loft with my family last weekend after my Dad claimed it had the best clam chowder in Boston (how my Dad knew this I have yet to find out...). I didn't order the soup but I did get one of the special cajun seafood combo plates. I was given a huge delicious plate of scallops, shrimp, haddock, and salmon with rice and vegetables (the seafood combo ceasar salad also sounded great). I liked that the Sail Loft was a nice escape from some of the fancier places on the waterfront and was reminiscent or an amazing dinner I had at the Barking Crab last summer. My Mom did say that her lobster was just a little bit too watery, but I know she enjoyed her bowl of Boston's best (?) clam chowder.

This place advertises the "best fish and chips in Boston" on the menu, well I haven't tried them all yet but this place is certainty a contender. The fish is lightly breaded and fried, it's not too heavy and isn't mostly greasy breading like at many places. It comes with a large side of fries, all that is missing are some hushpuppies. Check this place out for an excellent meal while you look out on the harbor.

Fresh seafood. Nice view. Anything that reminds me of Gloucester or Rockport while in the city earns an extra star. I've been here for lunch a few times, never been here for drinks at night like some other reviewers. I've had the fish and chips, crab cake sandwich, and lobster. I love trying something new (as long as it's seafood) each time I go, and they have some great specials but nothing is especially inventive. The servers are have been friendly and accommodating (like when I brought a group of 12 in for lunch at work) and even brought over some free appetizers for us! The loft is long and narrow, one side is full of windows opening up onto a deck, and the other side has no windows at all - depending on which way you're sitting for your meal the experience is different. It sort of defines the line between downtown and the North End, and I seem to always suggest this place whenever looking for a place to eat after work (in the warmer months). It's a nice staple to have in the area.

I came here for a quick bite after work and before a basketball game with my co-workers. The setting was nice and the service was good. I ordered the club BLT which was pretty average overall. I heard there is a decent crowd here over the weekend - I will have to try it out again later on at night!

Burger was burned ... All I could taste was that charred flavor .. Such a shame because it was loaded with bacon and cheese ... It had everything needed to be great but it was grilled to a burnt crisp ... The fish and chips, nachos and clam chowder are always good !

I love seafood, so I'm very happy to have this nice little spot nearby. The restaurant has a cozy casual feel to it, although it can get a little rowdier at night at the bar. So far, all of the food that I have ordered here has been great, and so has the service. One night they even reopened the kitchen just for us because we came late and wanted dinner! Their clam chowder is possibly the best I have had in the city- super creamy and delicious. I usually order the fried platter (which comes with fried fish, french fries, fried oysters, fried clams, and fried scallops) for my meal- beware, you will not be able to finish it, but you will eat more than you should because it is tasty. My boyfriend has ordered the lobster roll and enjoyed it as well. I would recommend this place if you are looking for a moderately priced lunch or dinner spot. Since it is right on the water, and has a ton of windows, you can eat while enjoying a great view, and possibly a beer from their nice selection at the bar.

You probably need to fast about two days before eating here. The food is absolutely fantastic--everything from the calamari to the fish and chips to the popcorn shrimp was fried to perfection. Definitely come hungry because you will want to finish all the deep fried goodness.

In my opinion, this is the best clam chowder in Boston! Delicious and creamy chowder will warm you up any day. I'd actually advise against ordering anything else, because you will probably just want more chowder. The location is excellent right on the water and the drinks aren't priced horribly either.

I have lived in the north end now on and off for 6 years and I have come to love this watering hole:) My husband and I joined the boston sailing center this year, and the "sail" loft was a great go to at the end of a day on the water. They have a nice view of the water and boats and the seafood is great! I mostly started going here for drinks and never considered the food - until one night I discovered two great dishes here and have come back many times for each of them. 1. Seafood Portofino - glorious! It has all of my favorite ingredients; scallops, shrimp, garlic, pasta, and mushrooms. 2. Apple Crisp - The BEST I have ever had. It is so warm, gooey, perfect balance of sweet and tart, topped with vanilla ice cream. I feel a little left out over never having been offered an oreo before, I will have to look into this for next time:)

The best chowder we have ever had! Even better than Legal Seafood, and not by a little! The exterior is not impressive, especially given the competition in the neighborhood, but don't be fooled by that. It's a bit cozy, and definitely casual, but the food was off the charts. My family ordered four different meals and all of us agreed that this was our best meal on a 9 day vacation. It doesn't get "the pub" that Legal Sea Food, Barking Crab, and No Name, but it was far better than all of those. I disagree heartily with Edward M. on the chowder. Best, thickest, heartiest we have ever seen in Boston.

I've lived in Boston for years, and I can't believe I just found this place. I went for dinner on a Friday night, and it really wasn't too busy (a great alternative from the Faneuil crowd). There really aren't many restaurants on the water, so this is automatically a plus. Like other reviewers mentioned, the chowder was perfection. I also had the scallops with the Cajun spices which were so, so incredibly yummy. Perhaps the best scallops I've had in this city. Portions were also generous, and a pretty good deal for $20. I'll be happy to return!

Best place in Boston to grab a casual meal and some drinks. Outstanding view, service, food, and overall atmosphere. I live right down the street from this place and I am here at least once a week! Definitely worth the visit if you're a local or just visiting the area!

Delicious clam chowder with dill. It was super thick, creamy and just perfect for a cold night's dinner. The bar itself is a nice casual sailing hangout for locals so its a good place to people watch. All we had was soup so I cannot comment on the rest of the food.

Yes, it feels like this place might just fall into the water at any moment but sitting out on the smallish deck enjoying an IPA in the afternoon sun.....yeah, you just don't really care if it does fall in frankly

Down to earth place on the North End... Just a few blocks away from the Aquarium T Station. Wife and I considered going to Legal Sea Foods, but wanted to go somewhere quieter, and were eating late for a weeknight (9:30 or so). I am so glad we went here. We had what was the best New England Clam Chowder during our whole New England visit, plus the best fish and chips with generous portions. This is the first place I'm eating at when I return to Boston.

Let me get the technicalities out of the way: the Sail Loft has good beers on draft, great seafood, an awesome location, a cool outdoor deck, great views, and the bartenders make the best damn dirty martini I've ever had. The crowd is super yuppy and the bar gets crowded on weekends. Good, now that I got that out of the way I'm going to tell you all about my mushy sentimentality for this place, so you should probably quit reading about now. The best date I ever had was on my 22nd birthday. The boy had driven up from New York to see me, my ex was coming to pick up stuff from my apartment, and he was pissed as hell at the new boy. Something about 'bro code,' I wouldn't know. So, we hid out in this bar all day. The ex could show up at any moment, and to avoid confrontation, we decided to just drink and talk about life, everything we had in common, dreams, life goals, all that sappy stuff. Sitting at the bar in front of the "all fancy women must check in with the captain before departure" sign was the most romantic place in the world at that point. I've never had the pleasure of feeling a connection with another person like that ever again. At that moment, it was like we were the only two people in the world -- especially when the booze got the best of us and the gratuitous makout session started. How sweet.

  • Steve M.

Their "famous" chowder is the thickest chowder I've ever had! It's got tons of dill, if that's your thing. If you're in a sandwich mood, you gotta try the reuben. It was stellar!! During weekend evening hours, the Sail Loft turns into a young, fratty-type haven. Still, it's got a great view of the harbor. I'd go back again.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this bar after work on a Friday, but I loved it. Perfect place to chill with some friends and get some fairly cheap beer, delicious appetizers (we had the calamari and nachos) and gaze out at the Harbor. And we could talk and actually hear each other! It was all good until some douchebags purposely spilled vinegar on the floor to make the place reek at which point we left. So the clientele can be fairly annoying the later you stay there. It was an interesting mix of families and after work folk from 5-9 pm though. I'll be back but probably only in the summer.

My husband and I got the fish and chips and the Cajun chicken tenders and shared them. The fish and chips are really good. Super light, crispy batter and really moist fish. The Cajun chicken tenders were very tasty as well. They also had a light, crunchy outside that was seasoned just right and the chicken was not dry like some places. We got a table right next to the window overlooking the water. The staff was friendly and attentive and the food was prompt and served piping hot. This restaurant is also within walking distance of the NE Aquarium, so if you're in the area for the aquarium or the cruise tours, definitely give this place a try.

My girlfriend and I came here because we like to try new places. This place is right on the water and has pretty great views. We ordered the clam chowder which was pretty good and the potato skins were great (a recommendation we got from yelp). THE FOOD: The apps we had were good. The chowder was pretty good (I've had better though) and the potato skins were the best part of our meal. I got the cheeseburger club which was decent. However, my girlfriend got the seafood scampi and everything was overcooked and cost $20 (the swordfish, mussels, and shrimp were super mushy). I would really only suggest this place for apps and drinks as they have a full bar with tv's. THE SERVICE: The server we had was awful. She said she had been working a double, which I'm a server myself and I understand, but her service was just terrible. She was not around that much (the place wasn't busy) and when she was she seemed to be always lost and wondering what she was doing. When we asked for boxes, she took the plates and piled them on top of the food we wanted to wrap up (we didn't want to waste the money we had spent) which was gross! She came back with the wrapped food with no bag to hold all the food. Each time I asked for a bag she seemed to forget until we were almost out of the door. When we received our bill, our server had accidentally put an extra $30 on the bill and it took another server to kindly step in and fix the problem. OVERALL: Do not go here unless you want to hang out for a couple of drinks with friends. I would suggest going to American Joe's next door for food as it is much better than this place. All in all, I was very disappointed in this place, for food anyway. I gave this place two stars.

Holidaying in the States is always a pleasure - for the quality of service, apart from anything else. Living in Eastern Europe, I really appreciate that aspect of American life. And - unlike some foreigners - I'm happy to embrace the tipping culture: to give for what I receive. But I experienced Eastern European-level service here. In fact, that comment is unfair to Eastern Europe, where things have improved quite a bit in recent years. The service my partner and I received from the middle-aged barman in glasses last Friday afternoon was abysmal. I guess he wanted the holiday weekend off. I'm sorry: not my problem. Sluggish with drinks. Reluctant to take our food order. Unhelpful when I requested a drink they didn't stock (Jagermeister, no less). And generally indifferent-to-hostile. Though he did spring to life when he saw my cash on the bar. Which is a shame, because the Sail Loft is a nice spot with decent food.

Crushed down the lobster and mussels special ($19) today (Actually made a weak effort, but was still impressed with the meal). I recommend checking this place out for a bite if you're into no nonsense fresh seafood only flavored with your choice of butter or lemon. Service was great and for whatever reason, having oreos as the bar snack instead of nuts/pretzels seemed genius. Good views, great location and an outdoor patio make me a fan of the Boston Sail Loft.

I've been there a few times - once during the day for lunch, the rest at night to hang out. Lunch: It wasn't too busy, staff was friendly, and the sky was clear so we had a great view of the water. Very family friendly. I had the chicken apple walnut salad - it was pretty good, and the food came out pretty fast. Overall, I was very satisfied with the meal and feel of the space. Nightlife: It's definitely hopping at night. Good music, good vibe...though I feel like every time I go, someone gets into a fight. They also have oreos at the bar, which is awesome. If only they had peanut butter for me to dip it in too... What I really didn't appreciate about this place was some of the staff - more specifically, some of the bartenders. Some were just not nice at all. One time, I asked a question he didn't know the answer to, and when I paid for my drink, I heard him talk about me behind my back to another bartender, and though it's loud, I can still hear you. The wait staff though are great and are on top of their game - as soon as I'm done with my drink, my glass is gone, and another one appears!

This is a great place to roofie someone. How I end up here once a year is beyond me. People eat here? I had no idea they even served food. I got dragged to this dump the other night and immediately got the creeps. Most people seem like townies, but where are they from? The lay out is awful, the service is slow and unsatisfying. It seemed like our 40 year old waitress had been waiting table for two years. I get better service at McDonald's. If you are from Chelsea or want to get roofied, you would love this place.

A North End staple, come here on Thursday-Saturday nights and you'll find Vineyard-Vines-and-Ralph-Lauren-clothed-college-fellows galore. Recently named one of Boston's douchiest bars, this place lives up to the title. However, the location is enticing being right on the water and the winter warmers are delicious. I suggest going during non-peak hours. The seafood is pretty average considering what they charge but have some good non-seafood pub food. However, this is a great place to congregate when it's snowy and cold out.

Good place for a beer and basic fried seafood. sandwiches are loaded with fries. stopped in yesterday for lunch and got mussels. a disappointment. they were tiny and about 20% of them were not fully cooked. will try again but the mussels were a poor choice.

I can't believe I've never been here. Chatting with the staff, sipping a Harpoon Summer, creating imaginary backstories for the owners of all the enormous yachts bobbing around in the harbor, munching on free Oreos - this is summer in Boston. It's not fancy, by any means, but I loved the rickety feel of the place. I love being by the water, and Sail Loft was a perfect after-work spot to feel the breeze away from the waterfront crowds. Did I mention that there are free Oreos at the bar? Oh, yes, I did. It's genius. Also, I watched a bartender fish a girl's flip-flop out of the harbor with an extension cord and a wire coat hanger. If that's not customer service, I don't know what is.

  • Meghan M.

Such a great place! The bartenders are on point remember what you're drinking. And when the ex happened to walk right in, the bartender kept the drinks coming. It's what summer is all about! And yes, who could forget about the Oreo's!

Our food was so-so and the service was incredibly slow. I was really looking forward to eating here with my husband and two kids after reading so many glowing reviews, but this restaurant did not live up to my expectations. I left wishing we had just gone to Legal Seafood instead. I've had far better experiences there.

Very cute unassuming restaurant. I had the chowder, steamed mussels, vegetable stir fry and Harpoon Seasonal draft. Yum!

Last night I met up with 7 of my nearest and dearest lady friends at the Sail Loft for an early dinner. It was a cloudy night and far too early for the Sail Loft regulars, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. The food was surprisingly good and remarkably affordable. They had a decent wine selection too. The soup of the day was a delicious fish stew with big chunks of swordfish, shrimp and calamari. My friend & I split the mussels Fra Diavlo and it was on par with many of the far more expensive restaurants up on Hanover. Others in our crew had salads, pork chops, surf & turf and clam chowder. People seem to love their chowder but it's a bit too dill-y for me. Everyone was pleased with their food and the service was very good. Maybe it's because we were the only people eating in there at the time? Anyway, dinner ended early and a few of us decided to stick around for another drink at the bar. The place was pretty dead, which is just how I like it. All of a sudden, a group of about 70 young men and maybe 4 women piled in all at once. The poor bartender didn't know what hit him. So many "fresh faced, just started shaving" blue shirted young lads all crammed into the place at once. It looked like a field trip and the curiosity was killing me. I had to ask. Turns out, they decided on the Sail Loft for the after party once their company (something to do with financial services) Harbor Cruise ended. It was pretty entertaining seeing these boys chatting up my girls at the bar. But, when one young 20-something boy pointed to my wedding ring and asked me wear my husband was, I knew it was time for this cougar to head home.

Our waitress had one HELL of an attitude and the lemon pepper fish sandwich was drenched in seasoning and totally falling apart. The view and ambiance are nice though. I'll give it that.

I've been to the sail loft probably a dozen times. Few work events, few times for a couple drinks, and a few times to grab some lunch. The food here is good, but not awesome. For a place that specializes in seafood, the bar apps are surprisingly good (recommend the boneless buffalo tenders and potato skins). I've enjoyed the lobster roll here as well, plenty of fresh, sweet lobster on a tasty bun. The clam chowder is fine, but not "the best" as many on yelp claim it to be. The best part about this place I'll say is the location/decor. You really feel like your in an old wooden crab shack out on the harbor. There are plenty of boats and the view of the marina is great. Theres a back deck that is small, but is one off my favorite place to sip on a cold beer on a summer day. Last but certainly not least are the free Oreos at the bar. This...is an amazing concept that frankly I'm surprised hasn't been emulated elsewhere. Overall a great spot for a cold beverage and some food on the water.

  • Alyvia M.

We walked in to the smell of fresh seafood, and frying batter! We quickly ordered our local beers and headed out to the back deck to watch the boats and fishermen in the sun. It was amazing out, the cool breeze was perfect for outdoor drinking. The fishermen were dropping their lobster traps in the water as we drank our UFOs and Sam Adams. The clam chowder passed by, and I was kicking myself for eating a full meal at lunch. It looked ridiculous! I have to get back there soon to try it!

Great little local place. Never crowded. Prices reasonable and food was good. The clam chowder was creamy and filling.

Best chowder in Boston - I always go out of my way to stop here when I'm in town. Heavy on the dill, which I like. The chowder is large enough to fill you up - consider yourself warned. This is also a great place to go if you want to eat fresh lobster. Their lobster is $20, about half the price of other options nearby, and it's the real deal. On my most recent visit, they also had a 2-lobsters for $30 special that would be great for a couple. On my most recent visit at lunchtime, I ordered a lobster roll. It came jam-packed with about 2-fistfulls of lobster. Unfortunately though, the lobster didn't taste as fresh as I expected - it was clearly out of the fridge, if not the freezer. I wouldn't order it again.

Used to come here all the time when I lived in N end about 6 years ago, been back a few times in the past year and happy to say it's still the same old little watering hole. Never eaten here, only drinks - great view, small place but friendly and gets hoppin' at night for the area.

Great burger, but service a little slow for dinner/drinks. Still, a good & reasonable priced place to go by the water.

Used to be a regular back in the days when there was a 2nd location in Cambridge. Now I pop in whenever I get to Boston. The chowder is wicked good as is the seafood and burgers. Service is always a little random.

This place feels as though you have found a hidden gem or four leaf clover... The atmosphere is fun, the scenery is beautiful, and it has the best New England Clam Chowder in all of Boston.... and quite possibly the world... The waitress aka the owner's daughter, EACH time I have come here has been a tad too chatty and kept coming up to us making small talk, not sure if she was trying to get a big tip or just corny with all of the jokes... A place to meet some real Bostonians as well... oh and if you are not a Red Sox fan, you may want to skip this place during meals... I learned the hard way lol... Food is cheap, the artwork is cool... and the bartender is some delicious eye candy for the ladies... Ah yes, and sit by the window to enjoy the scenery as well as the fishy smell of the water below you....

I really like the Sail Loft. It's not far from my work, so my coworkers and I head here for lunch quite often. AMAZING CLAM CHOWDER. That's all I gotta say about that. I also love the Cajun Chicken Fingers, "Boston's Best Turkey Club", and their Cold Slaw. I've also been here at night for a few beers, and it's a good time. Great draft beers for a good price. You can also get take out from here, just as good.

we went here based on yelp reviews and I don't think we were disappointed but the food did leave some things to be wanted. The service is a little lack luster, but understandable because there were so many people in there. Maybe I went in with high expectations ... too high... the clam chowder was good, but it was luke warm and honestly kind of bland ... i couldn't taste anything other than cream. The lobster roll was sub par. I compare all of my lobster rolls to the good ol boys at bean-town pub. If anyone knows how to make the lobster roll it is bean-town. So this one disappointed, there was not much flavor, I had some shell in my salad, the bun had no flavor, and over all it just wasn't great. The highlight was the boston's best potato skins. I don't know what these guys do to their potato skins but I could eat about a million of them. The cheese in them is just amazing it is flavorful and creamy its just great. Another highlight is the price of the food. Generally cheap, but the seafood is expensive, but on par with other places. I will say being from the south I was blown away by the ranch dressing and that is why this place gets 4 and not 3 stars. I wanted to bathe in it, it took me back to Texas and I was so happy to have ordered a side of it. Fun place for drinks, cracking some lobster, or dipping into some skins.

  • Paula N.

Came here to try their clam chowder. It is the best. Thick, chocked full of clams and potatoes, and a very healthy dose of dill. We went on a clam chowder tour, and loved this place the best -- despite already being full from the 3 places we had had clam chowder before this.

    (5)
  • MARIA G.

So we came here thinking they had a raw bar. We were sadly disappointed and ended up ordering clam chowder. I ordered the sail loft cup and a half. I will say that the chowder was awesome but I didn't get my half sandwich until I was almost done with the soup. The chicken salad was a bust. All in all - great scenery and atmosphere but sloppy service.

I enjoy a nice simple lobster roll like this. It was a decent size too. Not too small like other places. Very simple lobster, not too much mayo, and not oversalted at all. I hope to be back.

It took us all weekend - but we finally found a place in Boston where the waittress couldn't be bothered. Pretty good track record if you ask me! On the GREAT side - the clam chowder was the best we had! It was super creamy - and had the added flavor of dill. What a nice touch. Since this was the end of our trip - I had a burger and my husband had the fish and chips. Both were good. But that CHOWDER - that was something else!!!! Great little restaurant with a great view and atmosphere. Don't let the wait staff piss on your chips. It's definitely worth the visit!!

High Tables Long Bar Many locals and a hang out for Sailors. We saw a good group of them just hanging out there. They looked hot. I had my first Black and Tan-it was good. I will have that next time as my first drink so that I can actually enjoy it before I get drunk. Con: Can't hear the music at all. Pro: Real chill and relaxing. Stay as long as you like and have a good time with friends kinda place.

This place is great any time of the day. The clam chowder and the mussels are amazing. It's a fun place for lunch/dinner. The bar draws a good mix of people at night and it's a fun, friendly atmosphere. If you show up after 10pm on the weekend, you might have to wait in line. Don't forget to grab an Oreo from the bar!

  • Jaynie K.

Incredible chowder! Thick, creamy, and full of delicious clam and potatoes... I could've done away with a bucket of it! The assorted seafood sampler was great. Baked potato skins were full of cheese, bacon and tasty goodness. Mmm! Service was friendly, but we'd have to wave down the server to get her attention.

This restaurant has excellent seafood. It is fresh and delicous. The prices are reasonable for the quantity. I have always had good experiences here. If you go there, you should try some of their soups or clam chowder along with the main course. Good scallops here too. Best of all, it has a typical seafood restaurant interior and a nice view by the water.

The Skinny: GF was totally impressed with the lobster and mussels for 20 bucks lunch special on Saturday (I think Sundays too). And if she was impressed, I was too. Full story: We walked by as i was showing a certain someone around my home city. She noticed the menu of lunch specials with one particularly being a 1.25 lb lobster with mussels for 20 bucks. Since she promised herself she'd get lobster here, and that lobster costs $70 in SF according to her, she was amazed at the deal. So we wandered the North End a bit, came back and she feasted and was totally pleased. I was surprised bc I normally think of this place as a drinks place (which most of the other reviews would confirm). nice work!

The Sail Loft. Ugh. Memories..... I've never gotten the food here! So - read the other reviews for that! I've only ever gotten drunk here, or stopped off here for a drink before getting drunk somewhere else. There's a teeny tiny deck out back that will absolutely make you feel like it's going to drop off the side of the building at any minute. There's a little window there that you can get more beers from the bartender, which is cool. Rowdy drunks, white hats, I've seen bartendters leap out the window to break up a fight. Quality place, let me tell ya....

Had the seafood diavolo, out of this world. And pretty spicy too (which I like), not watered down at all. Had a taste of my friend's clam chowder too, not bad. Very affordable prices for sandwiches, fish + chips, etc. Only minor qualm is it's a relatively narrow space so can get crowded easily on Friday/Saturday nights, but would definitely come here again for fresh seafood.

I'm a long-time fan of the Sail Loft. The cast and crew are both fun and the ambiance is enjoyable. If you live in the neighborhood, winter is a great time to visit too. I've enjoyed many a New Year's celebration there too. To those "munching on Oreos," please allow me an anecdote. One night I was in the spot and went to Men's Room. A disheveled old man emerged from the stall and, without washing his hands, left the Men's Room and went to the bar. He was last seen digging his hands in the Oreo jar. Caveat Emptor! Again, I love everything about the Sail Loft, but I've lost my taste for Oreos!

What a fantastic place to eat! Everything was delicious and reasonably priced. This restaurant has a beautiful view of the wharf/water. Plenty of hooks for coats and winter gear, which is crucial in Boston. Plus, it's kid friendly! We will be frequenting this place often.

On our trip to Boston, this was one of our favorite restaurants. They had excellent food and nice staff. The atmosphere is casual and the prices are reasonable. Very cool location on the water - I'm sure the view on a clear day would be great. We will definitely be back!

  • Laura J.

I'm starting to consider this place one of my go-to's for drinks in my neighborhood. Its a totally casual hangout, lots of people on the weekends, and the drinks are reasonable. Yes, you can see the water while sitting at the bar or in the dining room, which is a perk considering most places that are on the water are super pricey and underwhelming. Can't say that about Boston Sail Loft. Every time I've been, it's been a good time. Never tried the food but Im guessing that will happen pretty soon. But regardless, I love this spot.

    (4)
  • K E.

I would give this place four stars if it was only a bar. But I've eaten the food twice now and it's not that great (although to be fair I haven't had the chowda). If you go late, there are always very interesting characters hanging around. Jukebox is decent, too, if you can get the douchebags to quit hanging all over it.

Come here early in the night to pregame before you ROWDY pregame. OR Come here late in the night to post game after your done being rowdy. It's a spectacularly chill bar with a deck overlooking the water. Admire the ridiculous yachts and wonder why you don't have one.

    (4)
  • EricaLynn J.

A perfect little chill spot with a young, energetic vibe but without the uncomfortable frat house feel that usually accompanies places like it. A plus is that the food is actually good - you'll be pleasantly surprised by the one step above pub fare menu sporting recession-friendly prices. Bring your friends, don't mind the wait outside (it's not as bad as it seems) and enjoy one of the most fun places in Boston!

After a day of free sailing and free cocktails, my tummy was asking for some sustenance. Enter The Sail Loft. It wasn't a busy day so we were sat quickly and attended to in excellent fashion. I had the cheeseburger club... yum! Downfall... so tasty I ate the whole damn thing and had a full stomach for the rest of the night - literally... I skipped dinner b/c I was still full. Seems like they have a nice menu of options. If you like seafood, then you'll like the daily specials as well as some of their main dishes. For those of you who aren't seafood fans, the menu is slightly more limited, but still manageable. *funny side note* Beware of crotchety old ladies a table over from you... but enjoy the entertainment as their husbands try to calm them down and be impressed as the waitress remains composed.

  • Christina D.

This is the whitest place I have been in Boston. Yikes. If I had to look at one more pair of khakis and flip flops with an untucked button down I was going to scream. I didn't stay long, and won't be going back.

    (1)
  • Michael G.

I have only had lunch and early dinner here so I can't speak for the night life, but the food was a good deal and only a short walk away from the tourist trapped area that it is in. The food wasn't anything special, but it was definitely tasty and has a great view of the water. The biggest thing is that it is near the water and they can get "seafood" I take my cheap tourist friends here.... and they enjoy it.

  • Luke C.

Keep in mind this is only a review of the sail loft as a bar, not a restaurant. I've been here twice after midnight and have not been impressed. The place is too crowded and I get a feeling of trust fund babies and popped collars when I walk in. It's just not my scene. Our entire group came from rattlesnake (LOVE that place), stayed at the sail loft for 10 minutes, and then finished the night at Hong Kong. (If HK ever hires a female teriyake person, I've found my wife). But I digress. Take home message is that the only way I'd go to the sail loft for late night shenanigans is with a gun to my head. Look elsewhere for debauchery.

    (1)
  • J. J.

Come here if you haven't been touched recently, and you're not too discriminating. The Sail Loft is small, invariably crowded and full of single people who wish they weren't. The pros: Not dressy at all, cozy space, love the jukebox, tiny little deck overlooking the water (better than no deck at all). I've heard the food is good, and the potato skins I had (huge portions, by the way) were tasty, but when are potato skins ever really bad?

    (2)
  • Kyle P.

The Sail loft is a great place to start your night off or for after work drinks. The drinks are priced decent for that area, only $7 for a LI Ice Tea or a G&T. The front can get very crowded but you can always find seating in the back. The little deck on the side is nice and it has a window to the bar so you can order more drinks. Its defiantly a recent college grad bar, most of the crowd is mid and late twenties. If you are looking for an unpretentious bar where you are free from those ubiquitous mainstream boho eclectic hipster types, come here, fun times will ensue.

Went here last night for a few drinks and some appetizers. The waitstaff was attentive and the drinks were reasonable ($5 drafts, $5.50 mixed drinks of medium strength). The outdoor patio overlooking the water was small, about the size of a small livingroom, but was a pretty cool spot. Bonus: there are windows outside that connect to the back of the bar so you don't have to go inside to order another drink. Unfortunately, you couldn't take food out on the patio (I'm not sure why - seagull hazard, maybe?). The appetizers ranged from standard to substandard - boneless buffalo wings and fried calamari were good, while the baked potato appetizer was smothered in what I think was nacho cheese. Ick. I'd come here again, I guess, but it wasn't particularly remarkable in any way.

Prime ground for what I deemed "Harvard Hunting" in college. It means this is a popular watering hole for the well-dressed, upwardly mobile 20 somethings - fire away. While those days of looking for love at the bars are over, it has three things that I still love: 1. By the water; 2. friendly people looking to have fun 3. Jukebox! The space isn't so bad either. I definitely plan on eating here in the future...and maybe even take up hunting again.

    (4)
  • Jared S.

Agree that nothing beats a beer on the small deck on the water in the late-afternoon sun. Bonus points to the bartender for remembering my wife and me (and our drink orders) on our second trip in as many days over July 4th weekend.

  • Janina T.

I went here last night at around 9 for a drink with a friend. It's clearly not a very hopping place on weeknights which is understandable. It's technically located in the North End, I believe, but it's nicely located right by the water so I'm sure on a clear, sunny day, you'd get a fantastic view if seated at a good table. I was a little turned off because the bartender didn't seem to be very attentive. He was much...older than the usual bartender that I'd see but I'm assuming it has more to do with the bar trying to give off a more older, upscale vibe as well, which is totally fine with me. It took a while for my friend to get his attention the two time she went up to the bar to order and drink. The first time there were maybe 7 other people in the whole establishment. The second time was R.I.D.I.C.U.L.O.U.S. because we were the ONLY PEOPLE THERE yet she had to walk practically from one end of the bar to the other to catch his attention. It seemed more to me that he didn't want to pay attention to her versus not being able to hear her which is compeltely unprofessional and uncalled for. It might have had to do with the fact that she was wearing a sweatshirt and we were both generally dressed down (sorry, I spend enough time and effort at work so please don't expect me to glam it up on a weeknight for a quick beer catch up sesh). Regardless, I don't appreciate being treated that way simply because we might not look like the average clientele. The host or whatever you would call him at the front was completely unattentive. When we went to say goodbye and thank you as we were walking out, he didn't move a muscle from the text message or BBM that he was engrossed in. Sail Loft Unprofesh Act #8345937845 of the night. I'm not giving this 1 star because I generally liked the look and feel of the place. The service is a whole other story. I may give it a try on a more upbeat night but if this is what it's like on a normal basis, I might have to reconsider.

  • D S.

I really enjoy the sail loft... I guess my only real gripe would have to do with the layout of the place, and the fact that it prevents you from walking anywhere (most importantly- from bar to bathroom) without awkwardly rubbing against another human being... That being said, it's a good time... the kind of place where you are going to hear all of the kinds of songs you would typically choose for karaoke, and while it is not a karaoke bar, many of the people around you will be drunkenly singing along. You know that you have found a place where people are loyal fans when they are willing to smoke their cigarettes on a deck that should fit about 7 people, but generally inhabits at least 15-20 in the evening hours... I don't quite get why they don't just step out the front door... but, whatever floats your (sail) boat... sorry, I had to! The cocktails are nothing to write home about, but they'll do, and the atmosphere is casual, load and friendlier than one may expect when they walk in and see all the preppy mcpreppersons in there. **Also, I see people having group parties there a lot and they seem to be very willing to work with their limited space in order to make it work for parties...***

Were in Boston doing the tourist trek with out of town family members 4th of July week. Needless to say Boston was a mob scene and most restaurants - there were 9 of us, 6 adults and 3 kids had 1 to 2 hour wait for lunch. Popped into Sail Loft, young guy at the door could not have been nicer, said we a large table just paid their check should only be a few minutes. Kids had previously mentioned oreos as an appetizer. Got seated in just a few minutes, cold beer, reasonably priced meals. Food was great! One of the kids has some dietery issues and the kitchen was more than accomodating and the chef actually came out to make sure all ok with her meal. Would definitely come back sans kids for some cold beers and great views!

Went with a group of people one very drunken night... Small place, deck outside over the water. A fun, chill place where you can wear flip flops, drink cheap, and enjoy the atmosphere of the waterfront. I'll come back if I ever go out around Faneuil again.

  • Nate R.

I love the sail loft. I usually end up here after meeting people at Tia's on a Thursday or Friday night in the summer. I would give it 5 stars if it wasn't always packed and the deck was a little bigger. But Boston doesn't really have a large selection of cool outdoor summer bars. You don't have to get all dolled up to come here either, wear what ever you would like. You always end up bumping into someone you know here as well. Saw 2 blasts from the past last time i went. 1 good, 1 bad.

Maybe I got this place on an off night (everyone focusing on the Celtics game) but really disliked this place; full of fraternity-type dickheads who react badly to anyone not like them. Myself and some colleagues in from overseas bailed in here to get some drinks after dinner nearby and got major attitude just trying to get to the bar. I was kinda embarrassed by the behaviour of some of the people here in my adopted hometown, actively blocking our way, giving verbal attitude etc. If you like this place you almost certainly: - follow all local sports teams, even the ones you don't really like / understand - use the term 'awesome' a lot - shop at the Gap / American Eagle / the Prudential Center and occasionally H&M, if you're feeling a bit 'edgy' and dangerous - were in a great fraternity / sorority in college - have never had an original thought in your life - are a bit of a cunt

Came upon this place by accident, but were very pleased with it. Sat at the bar and ordered beers and clam chowder, which did not disappoint. Hearty clam chowder, with plenty of dill, hit the spot on a cool day.

  • Paul G.

A contender for best fish and chips in Boston. The chowder is right up there, too. I stop in here during the day on weekends sometimes when it's slightly less crowded. It's a mixed bag of neighborhood 20-somethings and tourists during the day, but it gets more of a younger crowd at night. Decent TVs for sports watching, nice outside deck, and good bartenders. I started coming here in the 80's back before they gave it a new floor and it was called The Wharf. The only difference between then and now is you cannot see the harbor below through gaps in the floor boards you as you're having your beer. Still a solid neighorbood bar after all these years.

  • Abhishek J.

The location is great on the water in the north end. There is bar at the entrance and dinning away from the door along the water. Almost all the seats in the house have good water views. The service was so-so with me having to remind the waitress that she forgot to get my salad. The food was okay with it being the typical fried seafood, there were two dishes we liked, the clam chowder done with a twist of added dill. We also like the Sautéed Seafood Portofino. I would recommend this place more for the views and a place to have some beer and soup and then have a proper meal at a North End restaurant.

  • CeeCee R.

Went there and got seated quite promptly. A Host is nowhere to be found, so my husband had to flag a server to get us a table. Not a bad place for drinks and fried seafood. We had the Tex Mex Nachos which was pretty good to start off with. My husband had Fish and Chips and I had the Shrimp Platter. Entrees were pretty good, couldn't go wrong with anything fried. The window seating may be the closest to outdoor seating, it was pretty good, you can get some breeze and some view of the water. The only thing about this place is the lack of lighting, as it was pretty dark. We were going to go to Barking Crab but no seats were available decided to walk further to the Sail Loft, we made the right call. Overall it was ok, it wasn't too crazy that we are eager to go back there very soon.

The choice appears to me to be either the Sail Loft or Legal Seafoods. The choice then, appears to me to be okay seafood for a reasonable price or pretty damn good seafood for a ridiculous price. Their best dishes are fried, and yes, always greasy. The service is pretty much hit or miss, and mostly just okay. My favorite is getting the authentic Boston experience (nothing fancy, with a little rudeness thrown in for flav"a"). My least favorite is that the bathrooms are pretty sketchy given that they're supposed to be in a nice sit-down restaurant (may have seen better in T stations...). The clam chowd"a" is good. I don't much like clam chowd"a", but the fianC does and he says it's the best. I do like the cracker they put on top... It's pretty good. But then mostly because I haven't found a good replacement.

In brief, the Sail Loft is a top-notch watering hole and as judgment-free a place as one can hope to get shit-faced at within the city limits. For all the high jinks and poorly-conceived (or were they poorly-executed) schemes, not a bitchy eye-roll yet. Sure, the place is crowded and maneuvering from one end to the other is quite the challenge (especially if you're schlepping a round of drinks). Yea, the bathrooms aren't the cleanest. Excepting my unrealistic nightly prayer that they'll prohibit smoking on the teeny-tiny outdoor deck, that's the end of my gripes. There's plenty of praise. First and foremost, the bartenders are amazing. They're well-seasoned, speedy and remarkably good-natured. There's a lot more light than you'll find in most bars, meaning your 'mistake' is going to be that marginally less regrettable the morning after. The patron-operated juke plays mostly classic rock and radio hits from the 80s and 90s. Along with Grendel's Den, for example, it's one of only a handful of bars where I'd prowl with long-term aspirations, as opposed to a partnership that would dissolve seven hours later.

For yuppies only. You wanna hear a killer run on the jukebox that's a combo of Journey and Van Morrison? This bar is for you.

Great food, service and view all for wicked cheap! Perfect for dinner and/or drinks after work. Strong vodka tonics for only $5.50. Our meals were plentiful, and delicious. Laid back crowd, can be a little noisy but the dining section is set back from the drinkers. Tip: if you go on a nice day, call ahead and request a window seat - the windows are huge and it feels almost as though you are sitting outside.

I like this place a lot - it is the epitome of a local hangout with cheap, good food and a laid-back atmosphere. Great for low-key drinks and chatting with friends. Watch out for the weekends though - it gets super crowded with people dressed for the clubs (seriously? at the sail loft?) and you will frequently see a long line just to get in the door. It's not worth that, but it's worth a stop by during the rest of the week. Oh yeah, and the clam chowder is a must.

I've been here a few times, and always order the clam chowder. Its sooo delicious. I love that they make theirs with dill. Its different, but soooo good. We sometimes order the fried oysters/clams... very good as well.

An EXCELLENT place for good fresh fried seafood and other great pub style food. I honestly don't know if a better fisherman's platter exists in this country. But even if you aren't a huge seafood fan, there is a decent selection of other really good food... try the nachos as a starter (for example). It is right across the street from my office, I have lunch here a lot-- I am never disappointed. Great place to take out-of-towners as an example of a great seafood place, right on the water. A great area for sight-seeing. And surprisingly, not a bad hang out at night, and sometimes gets real crowded.

Pleasant spot. Good location, accommodating service, reasonable menu. Same menu lunch and dinner. Enjoyed it enough to return later in the trip. Nice for families.

Great location on the water, with a comfortable, casual atmosphere. Service was spotty but adequate. I had the lobster roll which was overflowing with a very generous heaping helping of lobster (though it could have benefited from just a smidge more seasoning). DD had the fish and chips, which were tender and perfectly cooked in a nice, light batter.

Don't know why this place gets less than four stars- as a pub it's absolutely stellar: great location right on the waterfront, far enough from Faneuil Hall to not be obnoxious, and close enough to the North End to be cool. I've been there for a beer after work, and went back for dinner- all very reasonably priced and some of the best pub food I've had in Boston. The wait staff is nice too.

Here late on a Friday - waited in line so that a too busy to be bothered bartender could make me wait forever and to then return to my table and see some drunk puke all over the floor outside the bathroom - and then walk away. They had free oreos which I love, but I don't want to know whose grimy hands are pursuing the double stuffs.

Great neighborhood gem. Stumbled upon it while visiting a few weeks back and was exactly what I was hoping for. Sat at the bar and feasted on the awesome clam chowder and equally good lobster roll. Service at the bar was very attentive. As a tourist it seemed like a mainly local crowd, out for a lively Saturday night. Definitely worth repeating.

heeee heee. We went here post-M-game watching at The Place, and we unknowingly stumbled into a 'Southern School Bar Crawl'. Hilarious. Even more hilarious is the ex-M-athlete we met there too, who we had seen earlier at The Place, who proceeded to tell us his life story and hit on my friend. Hee heeee. Place is ok, kinda dank and dark, but they had drinks and some pretty good apps (the mussels got rave reviews). It did seem touristy, not surprising given it's proximaty to the water and the aquarium, etc. The bf lives right by here and we always are on a quest to find good places by him, but so far we haven't been back here, in case that says anything...

I have been coming here for more than 20 years! I used to live in the North End and came here more frequently back then. I just went back on the 4th of July and it's the same as it always was: excellent! It's the same family owned business as it was back then - only his daughters are grown now and they all work here as waitresses. Thankfully, nothing but the daily specials have changed. The chowder is the best in Boston. They use real cream and butter and you have to like dill to love this chowder like I do. They make their own raspberry vinaigrette and it just makes the salad. Whatever is on special is always great - but I tend to stick with the tried and true seafood platter. Or, if I'm feeling particularly healthy (or needing to compensate for too much unhealthiness!), I opt for some broiled or baked fish. Ya gotta get some sort of fish - because that's what they do here! And they are extremely reasonable as well. It's one of the last remaining, small town feel, one of a kind establishments in Boston that is probably the best kept secret around. Don't go to Joe's American Bar & Grill - you can go to one of those at any mall around. Walk next door for the best fresh fish you'll have anywhere - with a nice view, great service, and a friendly family atmosphere to boot! =)

loft is just fine...neighborhood bar with decent food. on some nights (i.e. thurs, fri) is a serious meat market BOOZE: the entire bar staff has been here since bill clinton was asking where the men's room was located in the white house. they are remarkably friendly (notice how they patiently handle 'challenging' patrons during those late mobbed singles nites (see above) when it resembles a green line trolley at morning rush. FOOD: dependable and good. standouts: ne clam chowder is unique, sail loft salad, broiled scrod (comes in 2 sizes!) is really fresh (fish deliveries daily) & fine. DECK: For those who smoke, Loft's deck is one of the few places in the hub where you can stand with your cocktail (uber small without a single chair (neighbors won't let them expand it))...hence its used year round (i think phillip morris sends them a check monthly) MISC: Good high def TV's, internet juke box.

  • Phil D.

The Sail Loft has the best clam chowder in Boston. They use fresh dill on top, which is something I have added to my own recipe. I still can't make it quite as well, but I am getting closer! I think their stuff beats out Legal, Turner, No Name, and everywhere else I've ever had N.E. chowder. (The Manhattan variety is another argument altogether...) The front bar can get pretty crowded (and loud!), but the back is great for a date. Not exactly upscale, but the food is good and being right on the water does make it a bit romantic. Definitely worth the trip and way better than any other option (Joe's) on the waterfront in that area.

If you are looking for a place that will sell you chowder fit for a gourmet restaurant but costs less than a big mac meal then look no further then the sail loft. Great music, pleasant waitstaff, and the food - YUM! If you are still hungry after the enormous portion of chowder, then I would recommend the cheese burger. for seven bucks it is really just wonderful to enjoy. Fills you up, gets you all warm again for the chilly air outside. Love this place.

Neat location, lame crowd. Better go with a few friends, and well you probably shouldn't be drinking alone anyway and especially not here. Anyway, you'll probably need those friends to back you up after some drunk fraternity kid tries to fight you over a call in last nights Red Sox game.

    (3)
  • John D.

Taint cheap, but an incredible location, right on the water. How are you going to beat that? Real enjoyable, laid back environment with an easygoing crowd and waitstaff. I love this kind of food, real greasy and good seafood. It's definitely worth a return trip.

  • Amie R.

I like the Sail Loft as an after-work place more than a "night out", that's for sure. I actually don't think I've ever gone there on a Saturday night, which is fine by me! Their food is decent, as is their beer selection. Best to go before it starts getting super-packed, which it inevitably will...

  • Matt W.

The Sail Loft is a great bar to hit at night. I've never tried the food but I had one of the carziest nights of my life there....ah the memories....but I digress. There is a little balcony over the water where lots of people smoke, chat, and drink. The inside is quite spacious, though fills up on a weekend night. If you are in the North End at night hit this place up!

    (4)
  • Chase W.

You either love or hate the sail loft, it's just that simple. It doesn't and does belong in Boston, which is one of the coolest thing's about it. I like it because it reminds me of the 1 local bar from my hometown, ocean porch included. The food is typical bar food, decent, quick and reasonable, but you aren't here for that; you're here to polish off a few bottles of suds and to puff on a marby or p-funk on the back porch. It's an "interesting" mix of locals, both bluecollared and teh stuffy white collared bunch flowing out of Tia's or the Living room in the summer. It's fun, but it's definately cramped, loud, and not an every week type of place. If you've never been, check it out, it's an experience if you hit it on the right night; you might even have to wait in line.

All I had was a bowl of clam chowder and it was great. I have not much to compare it to since this was the only bowl I had while visiting, but I enjoyed it immensely with the crackers and a nice view of the water and a Guiness.

Place feels like it belongs in some seaside town where out-of-towners come on the weekend. read: bar and ok seafood that's reasonably priced, but won't have you coming back. Really preppy customers (they've probably been sailing in the harbour), often a crowd.

This place was just OK for me (which was actually better than what the rest of our party thought of the place). The burger I had was actually very good but everyone else was disappointed in their food. The atmosphere was laid back and the bar area got very busy by the time we left. It looks like a fun place to go and hang out and have some drinks, but going here for dinner isn't optimal.

This is THE best bar scene in Boston! Why wouldn't it be? Great jukebox, preppy crown, on the water (literally), relatively cheap beer. What more could you possibly want??! I could go on and on. You must go in after 9:30PM on any Thursday, Friday or Saturday night to experience the debauchery. But don't wait too long or you may not get in. You will probably see me in there at some point. I'm there just about every week. Have fun, Jon

We hit this restaurant after the Aquarium. It's looks are somewhat deceiving, because the entire front section is a bar, while all the tables are tucked in back. We went on a Saturday night, and like many of the other reviews said, it is a preppy hang-out. Luckily, when we got to the tables in the back, the noise from the bar was less noticeable. The Clam Chowder was delicious. The fish and chips were more fired like a chicken strip; not exactly what I was expecting. Also, if you order vegetables as a side, make sure to ask what kind: I was expecting steamed broccoli, and I got a serving of mashed sweet potatoes. Not bad, but not what I expected.

I came here last Saturday night and it was all recent college grads getting trashed. There were way more guys than girls and everyone was spilling drinks, a believe 2 glasses got broken near me. This sounds like a bad scene but the drinks were cheap and the place was vibrant so it was all worth it.

Not impressed at all. We went with a group of 4 and the only one who really liked their meal was the one who had a burger. I had the chowder which was okay and the scallops which weren't good. Our waitress was scatter-brained wanting to take our drink order the second we sat down and when we said we need a minute it took her over 10 minutes to come back. The atmosphere is very nautical inside and it looked like a fair number of people were having an after-work happy hour.

  • Judi D.

I've been here several times for lunch but never for after-work drinks. It's a great lunch spot: not too crowded, friendly service, a menu that pleases everyone (seafood lover to vegetarian to plain-burger guy). I like this place because 1) it's literally on the water and you get a great view of the pier from your table, and 2) it seems like the sort of mom-and-pop place you'd find on the cape or another small beach area. It's a nice change of pace from the typical, polished downtown establishment.

nice place! very small, dark and right on the water. stopped by last night for a going away celebration and unfortunately i don't remember what happened. that's probably a good review for them then, isn't it?! what bar isn't fun when you're with a group?

I have never gone to eat at this place but its a fun bar. It has a good crowd trying to have a fun time. Its located outside Faneuil Hall so you don't have to deal with that crowd of fist pumpers and underage college kids vomiting on the street. It can get crowded during the summer but for the most part its a bar that can be crowded and relaxing at the same time, you cannot say that about most places. I highly recommend this bar.

I love the Sail Loft - it's a great place to go with friends and to make friends as people here are friendly and just having a good time. Drinks are moderately priced and the staff is friendly and laid back. The layout could be better - it can get very crowded and tough to move around on the weekends, so it's best to get here early, stake out a spot, and avoid the line.

  • C L.

For years the Sail Loft has been our favorite casual dinner and drinks spot. Hands down, the best juke box in Boston and don't even get me started on how great their potato skins are! When I lived abroad for a few months I had recurring dreams about the Sail Loft potato skins! We love to grab a high top bar table and catch up with friends over a few drinks. I love the Sail Loft in the winter when it's quiet and you can enjoy the view but also in the summer when it's packed with boaters, preppy city dwellers, and tourists. We usually go after work or earlier on in the night and leave before it gets packed (any time after 9pm). Consistent good pub/seafood with a proficient staff who are quick to bring your drinks and a nice view from the deck - all you could want in a neighborhood bar!

Although the ambience is often really loud, the service rather inattentive, and the location somewhat off-the-beaten path, you should come here anyway. Why? 'cuz they got da best Boston clam chowda and a pretty generous and fine rendition of fish and chips as well. Their chowder is decadently thick, rich, and creamy just the way it OUGHT to be. None of that watery crap that you so often find at most other places. As strange as it may sound, it is infused with dill, but the flavors really work well together. Try to come during off-peak hours, otherwise you may find yourself waiting awhile for a table.

I went here last weekend and the bartender, Pete, was SO rude. He had attitude towards customers the whole time. I tried asking him if they were still serving food as he was swiping my debit card at register and was shocked when he replied by saying "umm does it look like I'm doing something right now? Do I look busy to you? Why don't you wait a second. " he was full of attitude and even the people around me within earshot were taken aback. My friends and I will not be returning. I was unaware that swiping a debit card and answering a question at the samd time was a difficult task

I am SO happy I'm not the only one who thinks The Sail Loft is "meh" [major props to Yelp for including "meh" in the two star description]. My friends all love it but I'm not a fan. I've been here a handful of times and have never particularly enjoyed myself. I ordered a long island one time (it was one of thooooose nights) and I couldn't even drink it. I have very few principles in life, but one is to never waste booze. I had to stick to my principles so I sucked it down but it was HORRIBLE. In general I've found it to be an okay place to get a simple drink or beer, but in general I protest going here. I've never had the food so I should give it a shot; I just feel so "meh" about going back...

Fun place to eat, like the rest of Boston, the parking here sucks. You either have to take public transportation or pay for valet parking. The restaurant has a nice deck and outdoor seating, but since it was cold out, everyone was seated inside. Good mix of people, both young and old, some families and some single. The clam chowder is excellent, and they add dill to it, which goes surprisingly well. I didn't like the lobster roll I ordered, I've had better. It was a tad bland and under seasoned. I did enjoy the other dishes, everyone else ordered something deep fried, which is generally pretty good any way. My mom's fish and chips was delicious. If I'm up in Boston again, I'll stop by just for the chowder alone.

Best. Clam. Chowdah. Ever. Except for my grandmother's own homemade which is more brothy. Sail Loft also has a good selection of fried seafood and sandwiches (for the seafood haters). I get the fish and chips. The cajun shrimp is de-lish.

HORRIBLE BREAKFAST. I was here this past month. I got over easy eggs, which were rubbery. I got corn beef that looked vomit!! I was so disgusted with it, i didn't even want to eat it. It was like taking 25 dollars and throwing it down the drain. We ordered buffalo wings as an appetizer and they were just chicken fingers in hot sauce. I am never going back here for food ever again. and our server wasn't that attentive either. She could have been friendlier.

Okay, read this and know I don't dig TV and if you sit in the front, you will have TV. I do like being on the water. This is a small place, strangely laid out. Having spent time in the Pacific Northwest I crave a chowder that is more creative than what I get out here (okay beat me up). I like herbs, so I was psyched to come here. Perhaps because it was a Sunday but the chowder was really, really, thick. And really, really, dilly. Rather like a chowder pudding-seriously. We also had the fried clams, not bad, but given it was a Sunday, not as fresh as I have had them. Has a local vibe, friendly staff, nice view if you snag a seat by the water. And I still seek the illusive chowder of my west coast dreams.

Dang, I'm surprised that this place has 3.5 stars. We yelped our way over here while enjoying the North End on a beautiful fall day. Fellow Yelpers gave it good reviews and the menu looked OK, and location is awesome, so we tried. 1) I ordered the special soup of the day - Tomato Florentine. It was gelatinous, like the consistency of yogurt. It was mostly warm, and I could see a little bit of the skin that had formed on the top after sitting for a bit. Additionally, it was 70% thick cream, 20% pasta, and 10% tomato. I couldn't finish the bowl it was so thick - and not in a good way... 2) Friends ordered the Clam Chowder. It, too, was crazy thick but not as much as my soup - not unexpected for chowder. My friends ate it but no comments worthy of other reviewers' comments that it's the best in Boston... 3) Men's restroom is tiny, no so clean, and definitely not equipped to handle commercial traffic 4) Waitress was nice, hostess was nice, location is great, so I add a star for that.

I absolutely detest drinking here/hanging out on a Thursday-Saturday night. If you're recently out of college, graduated from some new england liberal arts school, have family from duxbury, have a house on the vineyard, worship Vineyard Vines, or any combination of the above, you're going to be right at home. Anyone else is generally regarded (and sometimes made to feel) as an outsider or a doesn't-fit-in-er by the aforementioned people. A prime example is two friends who generally dressees on the ecclectic/bohemian side were asked by a random strange dude if they were lesbians. Bizarre. HOWEVER, it's actually not a bad lunch spot. The sunight pours right in to this sparesely-decorated and small little venue, and you can get prime views of Atlantic Ave or the harbor. The food...well, it's alright but not great. I generally feel like everything is overpriced for the portions and quality, but i guess you'll have that in this location. The cl am chowder is a must-try, though. It is thick, rich, creamy, made with dill, and comes with one large cracker rather than oyster crackers. VERY yummy. They offer the standard fare of deep-fried seafood (tough to screw up) and salads. While anything deep-fried is OK by me, the salads are rather boring. They make their chicken salad with cranberries and walnuts, and though it's a bit dry (the chicken), it's a nice little flavor/texture combination. I never really set out to eat here, but if I'm in the area and someone wants to go, I can always be satisfied with a bowl of chowder. Overall, it's a frustrating place to spend a night and don't expect a *really* tasty meal generally, but it's not awful.

I feel mixed about this review. I would give Sail Loft 5 Stars for service and drinks but maybe 1 star for food. It's just nasty fried seafood that makes you feel bad later. On the other hand, I love their back deck, beer selection is not grand but got all the necessities, service is friendly. I advise: go here for a cool summer drink, not a banquet dinner.

Funny how most people seem to think this is a yuppie bar. I was there for the first time on Saturday to celebrate my friend getting a new job (another friend who lives around the corner had recommended it to us) and I didn't notice that at all. It could have been b/c I mostly stayed on the porch with our group though. I guess I will have to go back again sometime to see what I think! When I got there we split an order of fried shrimp and calamari which were just okay (not that we had trouble eating them at all). It's nice being able to stand outside by the water on a nice night drinking a beer - not sure I would have liked it as much if I was crammed in with everyone else inside. Not until the end of the evening did I realize there were Oreos at the bar which was a nice surprise (I just had one, promise)!

Highlights: - Friendly staff and prompt service - Clam chowder. This is the clam chowder that should be the face of Boston. - French fries: so crispy and the perfect amount of potatoes inside. This is a 'bar and cafe' according to the restaurant. It's a little confusing on that end since we were enjoying our nice Saturday lunch by the windows (the 'cafe' part). And just 10 feet away there was a large (and loud) crowd by the bar enjoying their drinks. But I couldn't hate on that because the food was just so good. This is a small restaurant, with an even smaller restrooms. The establishment lives up to its Sail Loft name - highly recommend a charming Boston experience (seafood, clam chowder, loud people, access to alcohol, and old buildings).

Nice view , didn't try the food but still enjoyed going with friends while they had a few beers ! The only thing I didn't like its very small place ! And if your sitting at the bar where they hang there glasses is awfully dirty and has grease smug in everything from the seafood ! Also staff was eating while was working they where eating where the bartender makes the drinks and drops it off for the waiters ! After seeing them eating and working at the same time putting food in get mouth then touching someone's order that's why we didn't eat anything there very unprofessional !

Decided to check this place out to taste their infamous clam chowder. Ever since my traumatic experience at 3Buoys Seafood Shanty & Grille in Portland, ME, I became very skeptical when it comes to any restaurant that claims to make delicious clam chowder. But my wife remembered tasting their chowder in the past and not being that bad so we decided to give this place a try despite my high skepticism. When we arrived at the restaurant, I wasn't too thrilled by the way it looked on the outside. There weren't any fancy decorations or signs that attracted you to the restaurant. However, when we went inside, we were immediately greeted and led to our table. Our waitress was super friendly, polite, and very helpful. I ordered the fried clam plate (market price and it came about to be $29.99). My wife ordered the fish sandwich which was only about $10. We both shared a bowl of clam chowder. I was really impressed with their clam chowder. It was super thick, I tasted actual clams in every bite, and it was very flavorful. It was so very delicious YUM! (3Buoys, THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE CLAM CHOWDER!!!) I enjoyed my fried clam plate as well. Clams were huge and I was actually pretty full by the end of my meal. I thought it was a bit overpriced at $29.99 but because it tasted so good, I didn't mind paying that. My wife's fish sandwich was also on the spot as well. Overall, I really enjoyed my dining experience at TBSL and I will most definitely be coming back to try their other dishes!!!!

Steps to give any guest a bad experience. 1. Forget to write down our reservation. 2. Assure you'll get us in at reservation time, seat us 25 min after. 3. In front of your patrons bus their used glass, rinse it in cold water and ...wait for it....HANG IT RIGHT BACK UP!!! LOOK AT ALL THE GLASSES HANGING IN FRONT OF YOU AT THE BAR. AT LEAST 30% OF THEM HAVE LIP MARKS ON THEM!! Is that not one of the most disgusting things you've ever heard? If they do that in front of you can you imagine what they do in the kitchen? Ugh. Makes me shudder.

You never knew how much you needed clam chowder in your life until after you've eaten this one. I had clam chowder at Union the night before, and my expectations were low on what to expect. Now this... I never knew this is how clam chowder is supposed to taste! They offset the richness by dumping tons and tons of dill in it, so you could eat this cup forever and not notice until all of its cream and fat glued straight to your butt and thighs. Super thick and rich with tons of clams. Got the lobster roll, and while it is slightly smaller in size, there wasn't much filler at all or tons of sauce- it was a purist's lobster roll, and it was served with fresh fries. My Amiga got the lobster Mac and cheese, and it was delicious. Not too oversalted, a bread crumb crust on top, and a little gooey. (Even more gooey would be preferable, but it was fantastic.) I definitely ate every bite of both my soup and entree. It hurt, but it hurt sooooo good. Will be back.

A very unassuming seafood joint in the North End. We had the to try the chowder, of course. And being new to Boston, I've quickly learned you can through a rock and hit a place that claims to have "Boston's best chowder." However this place actually lived up to the hype. It's served in an overflowing mug with oyster crackers. It's the first time I've ever not added pepper to my chowder. This one is nicely seasoned. For entrees we ordered fish and chips and steamed lobster with mussels. The fish and chips were good, but the fries were actually the highlight! Get fries here people! As far as the lobster, for $23 (special for Monday) it was a steal. It was a good size and very fresh. I assumed I'd have a small size of mussels but there was a huge portion! Also very fresh, no gritty-ness to then at all. Top it all off with Sam's Oktoberfest on tap, and it felt like the start to a perfect New England fall.

Umm...... I think this has to be the best restaurant I've ever been to in Boston. Came here while visiting Boston with my family and I can't forget it. The place is kind of small, but we were able to get seated right away with reservations. The service is amazing; the waiters are all so nice. And of course, the food was amazing too! Our family ordered calamari and mussels as the appetizer. OMG I have never seen a restaurant give so many mussels, and they were all delicious! We ordered clam chowder too and I'm not a big fan of clam chowder but this one was really good. It wasn't too salty or too creamy.. it was just perfect. And they give you a lot too! For the main entree, we ordered lobsters, a fried seafood plate and a grilled seafood plate. The lobster was amazing! I couldn't stop thinking about the lobster and kept talking about it even after I left Boston. I wanna go back and have some again.

Horrible bar. They lost my credit card and has the audacity to blame me. I was sober. Paul, their most senior member of staff, was condescending and unhelpful. I will never come back. I had to cancel my credit card because of them and will complain to the owner when I have the chance. DO NOT go to this bar.

Love this place - a slice of Cape Cod in the middle of Boston. The staff is really friendly, the food is great and the drinks are stiff. I recommend the fish sandwich and the chowder is really good too. They also have a juke box that you can play thru an app on your phone. Perfect place to sit by the window, catch a sea breeze and enjoy some fish!

The night time bar is very lively. I wasn't totally pleased with the music choice, as it wasn't very upbeat-- however there wasn't much place to dance in the first place. Kind of an off layout where the majority of the bar is crammed against the seating so it's hard to get through. But the ambiance is quite nice. But it's an intimate/cozy little bar to go with friends. The crowd is mostly preppy 20 something's

This place is overrated. It is in the north end and on the waterfront, so a beautiful location, but the atmosphere, the staff, and the food, are average. You're better off going to Hanover Street and checking out one of the small Italian restaurants there. We were disappointed that there's not a great crab and lobster joint in Boston. They are all about the oysters.

Best clam chowder in Boston. This is a great place to come to grab a drink and chowder. Great service and they have an outdoor space where you can drink by the water. The service is great and people really enjoy working here.

The Sail Loft is always dependable. A short jaunt from the Lewis Wharf, the Waterfront Marriott, and from its bigger more commercial cousin Joe's down the street. I was once told this was "bar food." Ok, if I wanted Abe & Louise for steak I would not come here. But apart from not being required to put on a blazer and getting past the 15 feet of bar goers from the financial district, you get to a nice stretch of window seats, which are surprisingly private, overlooking the dock. You'll occasionally spot geese, ducks, or a few nice big swans. These guys do a couple of basics right. The calamari is fresh, not ultra deep fried. The buffalo chicken is juicy and tender, and not made with the acidic buffalo sauce that rises into your nose like caulking gun fumes. And lastly, the entrees do not disappoint, whether it's steak tips or seafood or just a nice burger.

You know it's a bad sign when your feet stick to the floor walking from the entrance to your table. That should have been our tip-off. I won't belabor this -- The Sail Loft is not recommended. Three of us (one adult, two children) went here based on someone's recommendation, and did not have a good experience. We were having a late lunch (2:00 p.m.) on a Saturday in mid-September. The restaurant (it's really a bar trying to pass as a restaurant) was not overly crowded, yet our server did an awful lot of apologizing to us (and to others at nearby tables) about how the kitchen was backed up, and thanking us for our patience. From the time we ordered our Buffalo Chicken Wing appetizer, it took nearly 25 minutes for it to arrive. It is not a good value. The three of us ordered the wings, one burger, one chicken sandwich, a cup of chili (which I promise you was not homemade), a lemonade, chocolate milk, and a water, and the total with tip was just shy of $48. I think that's too much for lunch for three, with no beer or wine, and no dessert. Oh, and about the fries, my son said, with exasperation in his voice, "They're freezer fries -- and they're awful!" One more point: The men's room is the size of a phone booth, and two people standing at the side-by-side urinals are not only shoulder-to-shoulder but, shall we say, cheek-to-cheek. Add a third at the adjacent sink, and it really gets to be quite an intimate affair. There are many better options close nearby. Do yourself a favor, and avoid The Sail Loft.

We thought this place was perfect! We just wanted a little lunch before our ferry ride. This restaurant was recommended to us by our Uber driver and we are glad we went. Food was excellent. The clam chowder is a must. If you're in the area and love seafood you should stop in! Service was a lil slow but other than that no complaints.

We had been pointed in this direction by a street salesman after reaching the north end. I would mostly definetly have to recommend this restaurant. The prices were amazing. I paid $20 for a full lobster and a plate full of mussels. The staff was nice and the location was amazing, being right on the wharf. While being seated ask for the back so you can be seated on the water!

Went here on a recommendation from a friend. The food was tasty but nothing special. The service was slow. We started with one waiter then he disappeared and another girl comes over with no explanation. She was slow to take our order and never asked to refill our drinks until my husband had to flag her down. The place isn't that big that she couldn't take a second to pass by and look at our table. The table wobbled and had a wad of napkins under one foot. The best part was the bread given before the meal.

At least once every summer I have a "perfect Boston day" downtown. Here's what is involved: Parking or getting off the T around the ICA, walking along the water from the ICA to the Sail Loft, eating fried seafood and a big fresh salad while I look through the window next to my seat for fish in the water below, grabbing a cannoli in the north end, and then walking back to my car (or the T) through the parks along the waterfront. Why is the Sail Loft an essential part of this day? 1. The location. You can't sit closer to the harbor for any amount of money. 2. The prices. Way cheaper than the other seafood places around. 3. The food. Super fresh seafood with an ultra-light breading and extra tasty cocktail sauce. This is not a fancy place, and it's definitely not going to win any awards for the clam chowder (passable, not stellar), but the fried calamari is really really good, and the service is very friendly.

I try to come here whenever I'm in the area. Between the setting and clam chowder, The Sail Loft more than does the trick for someone seeking refuge from the rain--as I've done on more than one occasion. SETTING: The Sail Loft is long and skinny, as if it's own pier stretching into the water. Anywhere you sit, you have a more than good chance of having a waterfront view. The interior is tastefully nautical, embracing it's Bostonian roots, with lots of dark woods, and some memorabilia--but nothing overdone. SERVICE: To be honest, unmemorable FOOD: No matter what you order as an entree, don't miss the clam chowder which is nothing short of incredible. It comes in a mug with the soup running down the sides to the saucer. Their seafood options--fish and chips, crap, sandwiches, etc-- are expectedly solid.

I randomly stumbled in here on a trip to Boston. Very down to earth joint, great martinis, amazing lobster served on a pile of mussels. A harpoon IPA with a view of the water for dessert. What's not to like?

Came here for my sister's bday. We saw that it was off the dock and we could eat with a great view so why not?! I should add that we are out of towners who found this place on yelp. We had to wait a big since we had such a big group, but the view that they gave us was well worth it (what sucked was we were kinda far from all the tv's which had the WC playing). I ordered the clam chowdaaaaa to start with. The chowda was making love to my taste buds....just awesome! I thought this was a good sign for the rest of the meal, but I was disappointed. For my entree I ordered the Fried Fisherman's Platter. There were some clams, scallops, calamari, and some cod. Out of all of these the scallops were the tastiest, but that's not saying much. Overall the entree was just too oily and it was just not doing it for me. The reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 was bc of the chowda, which I think may have been the best chowda I've ever had and the view that we had at our table. Will probably not go back here whenever I visit Boston again.

WHAT A FIND.... You would pass this place and not notice it its a small dive bar next to big name restaurant. You'll be glad you choose to go here. Fresh Sea Food, Great Service and decent views of the harbor I am not a big fan of chowder but this place rock LOVED the chowder. Steamed Garlic Clams and Sea Food Cioppino are definitely one of the best I have had. Fried Clams are a definite must try. Shrimp Cocktail was good the shrimps were big and juicy but the cocktail sauce was not that great. Drink and beer selection is not that great though. In all a must visit place. Will come here every time i will visit Boston.

5 stars for the clam chowder! (which is all I'm really reviewing) the best clam chowder by far -- skip the quincy market trap and get the good stuff here! Creamy, rich clam chowder at a great price and good size. The restaurant itself is okay, sorta small, but it's nice to sit next to window and watch the boats. Got there around 5 on a Tuesday and there was no crowd, but got mostly full within the next half hour or so.

My boyfriend took me here raving about their clam chowder. He didn't really tell me much else about the place before we went, but I was pleasantly surprised. We went early on a Friday night (around 6:30) and there were a few people at the bar and a couple tables taken. We were promptly seated with menus and got our drinks orders taken a few minutes later. The beer menu isn't extensive, but it's doable with a handful of beers on tap and bottled. I didn't order an appetizer, but my boyfriend got the clam chowder, it's just as hearty and wonderful as everyone else describes it. For my entree, I ordered the cheeseburger club and it was spectacular. A burger with traditional fixings on sandwich bread with another layer of bacon and bread (basically it's goes: bread, burger, toppings, bread, a generous amount of bacon, bread). It also came with a heaping of nicely salted fries. Overall, I greatly enjoyed my meal and so did my boyfriend (a few days later, I honestly forget what he ordered, but I know he enjoyed it). The atmosphere was nice and unassuming, some background music but nothing too noticeable. Not too loud, we could talk at a normal volume. We also had a beautiful view of the harbor during our meal and from almost any seat, it looked like you'd be able to see out to the water. Service was also excellent during our entire time there. Overall, a wonderful spot for a reasonably priced, delicious meal.

Awesome place to go for the clam chowder! So amazing, thick, and delicious! It gets crowded, but is worth the wait for food. The view is pretty good, if you are lucky enough to get a window seat, or a seat at the bar.

This is a great small bar on the water - perfect for drinking after a day out on the harbor, or if you live in the North End area. The food is pretty decent - they have great fried clams, and the bar actually gets pretty busy at nights.

I have fond memories of this place --stopping here at the end of the night, grabbing a seat at the bar, and reaching into the big jar of oreo cookies for the perfect nightcap. This is a fun spot on the water --great to just grab a few drinks and soak in the scene --or to have a few appetizers and beers at a table. The food is ok; nothing mind-shattering, but it is a place that really exudes some of Boston's unique charm.

Love this place! Very relaxed and full of locals. All the regional favorites fresh and served quickly. Nice waterside location. Family friendly and enjoyed by all.

Went there on the recommendation from a guy at Dunkin' Donuts. Had a martini, was huge and fantastic. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich, my friend had the lobster sandwich. Total bill for the food was only $32. Great food, great prices, good service.

Just stopped by for light lunch and a couple o' beers. Very good clam chowder. Nice selection of beer. Very attentive staff. Very nice atmosphere next to the water. Would recommend for lunch. Was not here for dinner.

Scallops were good, lobster roll not so much..both had a thousand mediocre fries..they were overstaffed for the crowd but they all seemed sad..Great location,

  • Kirk L.

The. Best. Clam. Chowder. In.

When I chill in the North End, this is one of my hang out bars. The stools have no backs so it does get pretty tiring if you hang here for a few drinks. Aside from that, the TVs are not ginormous so it can be tough catching the scores. They serve American Pub food which they do a pretty good job of.

Asked around for the best clam chowder and was told to come here. Everyone was right. The chowder was right on with the expectation. Also had a lobster roll which was great too. The only thing holding back a 5 star rating is the customer service. It wasn't bad. Just not excellent.

While I am not a huge fan on fish, I am a fan of their clam chowder. It is by far one of the thickest and most flavorful chowder I have had. The fresh dill adds a wonderful element. The cup is always overflowing with soup. I would go big and go for the bowl!

  • Gabriella C.

  • Stephanie S.

How sweet.

The clam chowder is amazing! Best I've ever had. And a special thanks to Meredith who went out if her way to send us back to PA with some chowder to share.

Good place for a beer and basic fried seafood. sandwiches are loaded with fries. stopped in yesterday for lunch and got mussels. a disappointment. they were tiny and about 20% of them were not fully cooked. will try again but the mussels were a poor choice.

Solid place right near where I work. The chowder is awesome. Way better than some of the overpriced 'townie' bars in the area. My waitress was adorable and very friendly -- wish I had gotten her name so I could have recommended her!

    (4)

    (4)

  • Barney B.

Great little local place. Never crowded. Prices reasonable and food was good. The clam chowder was creamy and filling.

  • Aaron F.

Ah yes, and sit by the window to enjoy the scenery as well as the fishy smell of the water below you....

we went here based on yelp reviews and I don't think we were disappointed but the food did leave some things to be wanted.

This is the whitest place I have been in Boston. Yikes. If I had to look at one more pair of khakis and flip flops with an untucked button down I was going to scream. I didn't stay long, and won't be going back.

Agree that nothing beats a beer on the small deck on the water in the late-afternoon sun. Bonus points to the bartender for remembering my wife and me (and our drink orders) on our second trip in as many days over July 4th weekend.

  • Sara M.

    (4)
  • Amy L.

I've been here a few times, and always order the clam chowder. Its sooo delicious. I love that they make theirs with dill. Its different, but soooo good. We sometimes order the fried oysters/clams... very good as well.

  • Em C.

    (4)
  • Bryanne R.

  • Blake M.

Neat location, lame crowd. Better go with a few friends, and well you probably shouldn't be drinking alone anyway and especially not here. Anyway, you'll probably need those friends to back you up after some drunk fraternity kid tries to fight you over a call in last nights Red Sox game.

  • Marc S.

  • Jonathan B.

  • Daralene I.

  • Lindsey W.

I came here last Saturday night and it was all recent college grads getting trashed. There were way more guys than girls and everyone was spilling drinks, a believe 2 glasses got broken near me. This sounds like a bad scene but the drinks were cheap and the place was vibrant so it was all worth it.

    (3)
  • Jen K.

    (2)

I've never tried the food, but this is a great bar. It is a good stopping point on your way downtown or at the end of the night.

Cheap, on the water, and close to town. Three important things to look for when you are just looking for a drink in the summer in the city. Check it out.
