This is a review meant for the Popeye's located within Northeastern University's famed Curry Student Center, which unfortunately doesn't have a Yelp page YET. I feel that I should first delve into the rich history of the Popeye's location at Curry Student before I continue my review. The Year was 2012. It was a dark time in my life, for I was a college student without a food court worthy of the prestigious University I attended. Day after day, week after week, the haplessly outdated Curry Student Center provided me with overpriced Wendy's, Pizza Hut Express (a poor man's classic Pizza Hut), Taco Bell (garbage in, garbage out) and the meal plan sponsored West End (of my belief in good things). Lo and behold, during the summer of 2012, Northeastern University took notice of the general aura of dread and despair that permeated the Curry Student Center. When students like myself arrived for Fall classes, we were greeted with a new and improved Curry, one nigh unrecognizable to its former iteration. This Haven for the Hungry had been completely renovated in design and more importantly, in food variety. Gone were the Pizza Hut Express and the Wendy's of old. In their stead, Sweet Tomato's, UBurger, Kigo Kitchen, and one other special restaurant began their reign of benevolence and just dining experiences for all who had about $5-10 to their name. I remember the day I met Popeye's just like the day anyone meets their first, true, and only love. It was a rainy day in September and I was just a few short days from beginning my third year. I was perusing our campus bookstore when I suddenly became beleaguered with an affliction of hunger pangs. Having not much time before my stomach naturally collapsed on itself, I rushed out of the bookstore and into the Curry Student Center. They say scent is the most powerful sense of memory, and I can certainly attest to that. As soon as I approached Popeye's, wafts of meticulously well-breaded, divinely seasoned fried chicken penetrated my nostrils (sexually, very sexually) and in that moment I knew that this was the fast food chain I would grow old with. In all seriousness, this is a top-notch fast food joint. Their original fried chicken is honestly excellent (similar to Bojangles, equivalent in quality to Chick-Fil-A, miles ahead of KFC), but their cajun fries should not be missed! Aside from the obvious value and time proposition that a fast food chain offers, Popeye's additionally benefits from offering inspired semi-monthly meal specials (e.g. Rippin' Chicken, Surf N Turf, etc) that really help to entice repeat customers (or offenders, if your general health was the court of law). "So, Edba, only 4 stars???" To that, I respond: "Oh, this place has it all, but it's no McDonald's!"

This popeye's chain single handledly ruined the Boston Red Sox's 2011 season. Some of my favorite Red Sox players got busted for drinking beer and eating fried chicken during one of the games. This demise led to the firing of Terry Francona and put an end to Terry's legendary era here in Boston. Popeye's chicken is dangerous and it can potentially put your baseball team's season to jeopardy. It all starts with that amazing smell. It captures your attention right away. Once you enter the store, there is no turning back. You are powerless against the power of popeyes. Next thing you know, you got yourself a box of 10 pieces for $13.99 all for yourself. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all cost because once it captures you, I promise you, it will enslave you forever.

There are three things in the history of my existence that I'm ashamed of: 1) When I was 8 or 9, I set some toilet paper on fire. While it was on the roll. In the bathroom. And as my Mom heard the smoke alarm go off and rushed in to see a flaming spindle torch and Charmin embers a-glittering, I ran out of the bathroom, screaming through sobs, "I didn't do it!" To this day, I've never confessed. 2) I pretend my identical twin brother doesn't exist, even though he jumps in for me at random events, business calls and the like. I don't feel that bad about this one, because he treats me the same way. 3) I love - with a capital love - Popeye's spicy chicken strips. It's a sickness. The chicken ain't right, and it's dipped in vinegar and something that's almost chemically spicy and coated in what has my mouth convinced is an entire box of corn flakes, and it's served by a grump who's been dealing with drunkards all night, but I love it nonetheless. Know what else I love? Cajun Sparkle. It's MSG, salt, cayenne, garlic and black pepper. WHO AM I? Oh wait, I'm all of you, too. Except my identical twin brother, who doesn't exist.

This is perhaps the best Popeyes that I've ever eaten at, which surprises me, given that Louisiana chicken is about as southern as it gets. But I digress. It was a little out of the way from where I used to live at the time but it was totally worth it. It's in walking distance from the Fenway Park too. Can't go wrong with a mixed piece meal( get it spicy for flavor explosion) with Cajun fries and a biscuit. No beans and rice- it can be hit and miss.

I loved this establishment from my days of living in the south. We all visited this place after a RED SOX game (yesterday). We had a better experience here than Tasty Burger. Our food came out 3 minutes later after ordering. Food was fresh and hot. Service was adequate. The restaurant is small though. Cramped in a way, but that's ok. Also, meal deals were better. Hope to visit this place more often while at Fenway. It's fast food, nothing more.

Pretty good fried chicken..but this is expensive fast food! Mashed potatoes and mac n cheese sides were meh.

Popeye's IS the better version of KFC. None of that dry as shi* chicken breasts. I can finally grasp why my honey loves this place so much. Upon entering, as with any fried chicken place, you're hit with the aroma of fried chicken and oil. Queue salivation. Lesson learnt, you don't need to order the combos preset on the menu; you're free to order a la carte. Crispier, golden outer layer vs. KFC. The skin is addicting with the crispy shell and moist, glistening layer of fat underneath. Chicken was hot, steam visible when peeling off pieces. Staff never gave attitude and were patient. Great location in Fenway, though understandably busier and packed when there's a Red Sox game. Spacious single room bathrooms are clean to wash your hands. It's a small Popeye's chain in general, but definitely a great alternative and replacement to KFC in a non-ghetto environment.

I know it might not be the finest dining restaurant but for a good budget and a late Sunday night Popeyes deffianantly hits the spot. The staff made a few mistakes in our order but was willing to fix everything very promptly. I had spicy chicken tenders fish and shrimp. I really liked the chicken tenders and the shrimp. The fish tasted pretty processed though. I wouldn't order that again... Other than that it was nice they had a variety of sauces!

I had great experiences dining in at this location. It reminds me of a an Irish Fried Chicken spot in Medford that closed many years ago called Ginger Damico's Chicken. My recent order for delivery from Popeye's came in 25 minutes late and all the food was super cold. Popeye's better step up their game or they might end in failure like Ginger Damico's.

This is my first time trying Popeyes.... What a great experience. There are mainly Bojangles restaurants where I live and I really love the food I just ate. Great clean little restaurant. Great staff loved the experience.

Take the green line to Kenmore Station and it's just around the corner as you would be walking up to Fenway Park. My coworkers and I went here several times. Really nice and happy staff. Interior isn't that big but it's very bright and inviting. I'll be back next time I'm in Boston. :)

So I have weird cravings for spicy fried chicken randomly. KFC doesn't do the job and I don't always have time to make it myself. Popeye's is the answer! I can't believe there is only one in Boston, that I really know of at least. I have gotten the chicken here multiple times and love the spicy, greasy, crispy fried chicken. Their biscuits aren't bad either. I actually have gotten a few of my friends hooked on it because who doesn't love fast food Southern style! The only bad thing is that it is ALWAYS busy. Plan to wait in line and for your food for a total of about 20 minutes at least.

Crispy chicken - yum.I asked for white and got dark. I came for the crawfish and you were out. BOO. Fries were cold, but my Biscuit was warm and delish! Line out the door at 1:20 pm. One register open - Super slow service!

For me the only thing at Popeye's that is really worth having a heart attack over is the chicken. The last time I went I got chicken with biscuits and a side of red beans and rice. I would normally get cole slaw with chicken but I remembered I did not like that the last time I went there. The red beans and rice is okay but I can make better at home. The biscuits are better than KFC but they were a bit on the salty side. The chicken is great. I prefer mine spicy but the regular is good too. I always get my food to go here. It looks too sterile to eat in.

I'm here to talk about one thing only: the brand spankin new Chicken Waffle Tenders combo meal. That alone was 5/5. My rating is a 4 because there were actual fossilized gnats stuck to the wall next to where we were eating. I didn't even know it was possible... but I bet they died smelling nothing but deliciousness. The entire ordering process is pretty intense, not just because I'm super white and I was with someone who was wearing a fucking suit and tie. Two different people asked me what I wanted. The manager is super high energy. If he isn't from the south, part of Popeye's training regimen must be to teach you a solid southern accent (see: hard to understand). The two of us ganked the last six waffle tenders there were, which was bad news for the three people right behind us that also wanted them. I felt bad for a second but hey, this is a dog eat dog world. The first thing that stuck out to me were the french fries. Incredibly fresh, these must have been straight out of the oil. They were crispy, and perfectly seasoned. Not even a hint of wasting away under the heat lamps. These were the best fries I have had ANYWHERE in a long, long time. Then, onto the chicken. I have never died so I cannot say for sure what Heaven is like... but I can reasonably assume it was emulated by this breaded and fried piece of poultry. Juicy on the outside, with a nice crunch. The batter was exquisite, in both flavor and thickness. And! The maple dipping sauce was the perfect compliment. Last, but certainly not least, the biscuit. Warm, flakey, buttery, amazing. I saved it for last. I kind of have a thing for biscuits, if you didn't know. The things I would do for a big plate of biscuits & gravy... It really tied the whole meal together and left me completely satisfied. I thought I could eat another three piece, but that was only because I legitimately wolfed down my box o' happiness within five minutes; and the food had not yet hit my stomach to tell me I was full. Three times while we were there a fat white guy wearing a plastic smock/apron came around the corner screaming "HOT HOT HOT" and dumping off fresh chicken. They don't play around there. The only strange thing is that you have to specifically ask for ketchup. That part weirded me out a little. In summary - the new chicken waffle tenders are amazing and must be consumed by any and all who like things such as: 1) sunshine 2) happiness 3) puppies 4) ice cream on a hot day (sorbet for you lac-tards) 5) feeling warm and fuzzy on the inside (don't worry, these didn't lead to diarrhea!) GET THEM!

From the South originally. There are a few things New England does really well, and a few they don't do so well. Fried chicken is the latter. Thank god for Popeyes. It's not on the menu, but they have a "Fenway Special" which is two pieces and a biscuit for $3.20

  • Rob C.

It's open again! And moreover, after i'd stopped going to the old one when the glacial, surly service (the newspaper said they weren't getting paid, so i guess i don't blame them) and the constant running-out of staples such as, say, chicken, or biscuits got to be too much. Yesterday i got my chicken and biscuits in seconds, and it was awesome.

I'm reviewing this chain location because my boyfriend thinks I should. OK, I maaay have grown up with Popeyes because my parents lived in Louisiana and when they moved to Canada, this was the closest (and cheapest) fast food equivalent to Cajun food they could find, and also they didn't like KFC. I maaay also love fried chicken to an obsessive level. I maaay have gone almost a decade without fast food of any kind so when I broke that fast this year, mayhem ensued. I maaay have asked my boyfriend if we could rent a Zipcar to drive down to Roslindale's Popeyes when I found out this location was closed and the devastation nearly broke my heart. I maaay have done a fried chicken dance in Star Market when I found out this location re-opened and got stares and nervous edging away from other shoppers. Those things maaay have happened. Anyway, Popeyes rocks and if you like crispy fried chicken that's so good you could buy a 12-piece family pack and continue to have the pieces cold for breakfast for 12 days because you don't have time for cereal before work, well then you should come here. You'll probably even see me. I'll be the one in the corner with pieces of batter stuck to her face.

To quote Adam Sandler's Little Nicky; "Popeye's Chicken is Awesme!" Everything here blows KFC out of the water. The biscuits rule. The chicken comes in regular and SPICY. (Not very spicy but at least there's an option). Mashed potatoes with cajun gravy? Thank you very much. Beans and Dirty Rice. YES! PASS

I have been touring as many American fast food chain restaurants as I can, whilst in the USA. Despite its apparent poor reputation, Popeyes seems to me to be by far the best. Meanwhile, my life is worse for having been in Applebees.

Fat G. comes here at least once a week, so there must be a reason why he gives it a good review. My first time coming to Popeye's was after College Day at Fenway, and we were strapped for cash for lunch. Also I had a craving for fried chicken and KFC was too far, so my friend and I tried out this place called Popeye's. Located in Kenmore Square near Fenway, it is a small restaurant. One comes down the stairs and sees the sitting area. To the right are the bathrooms. There is a TV that usually has ESPN on. The chicken is shown right in front of you. Normally, I get a Fenway Special, which is 2 pieces of chicken and a biscuit for around 3 dollars. Service here is fast and friendly. Chicken is usually fresh from the fryer, or if not, you can ask/wait for it. It's crispy, yet the meat is moist. Portion sizes are good too and pretty good for what you pay for. It's a place to chill out, relax, and enjoy the game, if you don't mind the smell of fried chicken before you enter the door.

I LOVE Popeyes... this location? Not so much. For the past three weeks this place has been closed for some ventilation problem. The other day I call and ask, "are you open?" they pick up and say that they are, so a bunch of my portly buddies hop into my poor little car and drive over there, ready to do some serious damage when, lo and behold, Popeyes is closed! Ventilation problem y'see! On various other occasions I have gone to this location and been verbally accosted by the angry woman behind the counter, I've been repulsed by the restrooms and just overall irked by the clientele. Oh well, what can ya do? I don't know, clean house and hire some competent people? *sigh* in a perfect world...

I am not too big of a fan of fried chicken per se but Popeye's is quite good. I am particularly fond of their spicy version. The fries and biscuits are also delectable. But I do have a bit of a complaint about this particular location. Granted that this place is small and they have to make do with the limited space, but it would be nicer if you didn't have to feel like the person in the next table or the one standing in line is right up against your shoulder. In my opinion, replacing the bar-stool-type set up with regular height tables may help to open up the space a little more. All in all...not that bad of a fast food chain. I will definitely return when my "fried-chicken craving" strikes again.

I noticed Popeye's when I was walking around the area. They always have specials and the chicken is always flavorful. The thing I like most is the biscuits and the fact that they offer Dr. Pepper at the unlimited fountain. This is a way better chicken joint than KFC.

I LOVE THIS PLACE. I travel from Malden to eat here as often as I can. The service as been great from day 1 the dining area and the bathrooms are always clean. Please stay open forever. I love you guys and you're yummiest addiction. 4 stars because I have gone here a 3 different times and my order was wrong. Nothing major; I was given dark instead of white or spicy instead of mild.

Had to see what all the hype was about... and if this chicken was worth "the collapse" Yes the chicken here is really good.... in my opinion better than KFC Staff was great. My meal was finger lickin good I can see why Beckett, Lester, etc had to make the call for this stuff during the games.... I can't imagine anything much better when drinking a few beers.

Not as good as I remember. - When I was a pimply-faced teen, I used to gorge myself on Popeye's chicken. I couldn't get enough of it. It put KFC to shame. That wonderfuly spicy super-fried chicken, those huge fresh biscuts, the sides that were an afterthought, but still eaten. Ah, the days of yore.... - Popeye's ain't what it used to be. First off, from the outside, with the colorfully painted walls, you'd expect the inside to be huge. It's not - it's TINY. Like maybe seats for a dozen people, tops. The spicy chicken is sort of like you remember, but not quite. The biscuts are not fresh-made, and are definitely smaller. It fills you up, yet leaves you feeling empty for the Popeye's of yesterday....

I am not a fan of fast food and popeye's is the only fast food I had for year 2011. I have to say I love their fried spicy chicken. I got the 1 chicken and popcorn shrimp for $6.99 with a soft drinks and 1 side. The chicken was spicy, crispy, crunchy and juicy. The people who works there are extremely friendly. Very clean place compare to KFC (though I haven't been to one in forever). I love popeye's fried chicken!!! This is the only only fast food I eat. Even though I am a fan of organic produce I can't stay away from Popeye. I have to eat it a few times a year.

Hells yes popeye's is back!!!!!!! i have been cravin popeyes chicken for some time now! I can now see why the service was so bad, if you worked and didn't get paid you would be angry as well. The new management has completely changed the look and feel of the place. The service was outstanding! attentive and what seemed like happy people were fixing your order. The chicken is still the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. There is nothing like a fresh Popeye's biscuit....... HEAVEN!!!!! Can't wait to go back.

  • Shuang C.

The Mild is bland as heck. It ain't got no flavor compared to KFC's Original Recipe Chicken. The Spicy is decent, but still inferior to KFC. The crust is crunchy though, so if you're the texture kind of guy/gal, go for it. Them employees be slow as snails, sometimes I get angry and leave hungry.

I love you Popeyes but you have seriously ****ed me over for the LAST TIME. Now I have consecutive dates, and corporate is going to hear it from me. First of all let me preface this review by saying I love Popeyes. I really do. I will drive 20 + miles out of my to stop at one when the mood strikes me. I have even gotten food poisoning from them in ATL in 2005 and told their lawyers that I loved them so much it didnt matter, I'm not the suing type. I let it go. LETS BEGIN! Food= A+ Service= F Attitude= F Cleanliness= C This particular location is terrible. So bad, the boy and I are in talks with each other of how to approach corporate about buying this location and revamping it. I have never gotten my food in a timely manner. Mind you, there are always multiple people working behind the counter, and there seems to be an abundance of chicken. WHATS THE PROBLEM? Does this location really hire the lowest common denominator? The caliber of employee is so subpar, I can't even argue sense. Average wait time for food is 20 minutes. (fast food my ass!) Here are 2 particular instances that have irked me to the point that I will call corporate tomorrow. 1: Saturday November 7th. The boy and I drive from Davis Sq to Fenway. There is a sign "Not open until 1p.m." Its handwritten on the door. That's all well and fine except its a quarter to 3:00pm. The door is locked. As we walk away another gentleman tries the door, and when it doesnt open, he climbs in through a window? SKETCHY MOFO! 2: Saturday November 14th it was my last night in Boston and the boy and I wanted to do something fun. We love Popeyes and feel like we keep striking out. So we throw a bottle of ketchup in my purse (lmao) We walk in, and I kid you not, there were 20 people standing around. All very serious. All upset looking. All had no food. There were 3 people behind the counter. Tons of chicken visible. And as I approach to order this large woman says to me, very loudly, and embarrassingly, "oh no! you gonna have to wait. AT LEAST 45 minutes. AT LEAST. There's only 2 of us here workin' (see previous count ) and we still got to make all the orders for these people who been waitin'. " I fucking kid you not. So I playfully ask 'did these boys eat all your chicken?" I guess the answer was no because all she did was repeat her answer to me. More SKETCHINESS: hand written sign on cash register " cash only " So on my last night in Boston we got turned away. We stood outside in the rain laughing... how can one restaurant cause so much drama? KFC gets my order just as fast as mcdonalds. C'mon popeyes, get your act together. POPEYES IS AMAZING, but this location blows. The staff needs to be fired, and new COMPETENT employees need to be hired ASAP. If you are patient, and have no where to be- then come here. If you're really hungry go somewhere else.

They need to bring the onion rings back!! I love Popeye's literally the only fast food I ever eat. But since they don't serve onion rings after reopening I rarely trek over from Back Bay. Someone (hello dash, dining in, etc) needs to start delivering Popeye's!!

Aww man. I've been in Boston for two years. I was transferred here from NC for work. I've been a fish out of water without any fried chicken and biscuits. I'm on the way to Popeyes now. It's not Bojangles but I'll take it. Will someone PLEASE open a Bojangles up here...?

  • Ivy P.

I love fried chicken. A lot. And Popeye's has really good fried chicken, but there is something wrong with this location!! Just because I make the trek to Popeye's doesn't mean I'll be enjoying salty, crunchy, juicy fried chicken. They've been closed for ventilation problems and staff trainings 2x. I've been like 5 times, and I've only eaten chicken twice!!! NOT OK! Be smart and call ahead to make sure they are open. 4 Stars for chicken, -3 stars for bad management.

Nothing to yelp home about. Although I liked the concept of us having a Popeye's, it wasn't terribly anything to write home about. We headed here after a show at Avalon, the wait in the line wasn't too bad, maybe only 10 mins or so. Thankfully we showed up about 20 mins before the Red Sox trampling began, and only had to deal with the donkey outpour on the T ride home. I think I may have actually pushed an old lady so I could get us seats on the train to avoid having people brush up against me for the next 20 mins. I ordered a #1. This consists of 2 pieces (wing & breast), biscuit, side, and a medium drink. Think it came to around $8. You are offered whether you want mild/spicy and white/dark meat. Although I liked these options, I was a tad timid at trying this place out and went mild and white, kind of like my personality. Oh....wait. Screw mild, I should've gotten spicy, a little more applicable and probably fairly more tasty. Why even call it "mild"? There wasn't anything spicy about it as far as I could tell. The chicken was decent, but I still prefer my KFC extra crispy. The biscuit was ok, and the fries were decent.....but I prefer the KFC potato wedge to the shoestring fries. Although, I did enjoy the seasoning packets labeled "cajun sparkle"...I have posted this as a public photo for all of you. We dumped sparkles all over our french fries and chowed down. I'd also like to make mention that there are no easily accessible sauces. We like sauces. Ripe for dipping fries and chicken into. We also ordered jalapenos and were kind of expecting them to be deep fried (we're kind of fat), but they just gave us a little styrofoam container filled with wet, whole jalapenos which we made the best of. We got 8 of them and had a contest. I won. Of course. Swedish iron stomachs rule! Far as setting goes, it's sub street level and probably can only seat around 20-25 people along a bar against the wall and a few sparse tables scattered towards the back. Not terribly clean either. Still waiting for a Bojangles to make it's way up.

First of all, goes without saying that the food deserves 5-stars. Popeyes' food and biscuits are like the Morgan Freeman to KFC's Gary Coleman. I also like the basement-feel to this Popeye's. It definitely adds flair and attitude, as well as keeping you from being judged by pedestrians who would normally be able to see you eating a 800+ calorie meal. Unfortunately, their credit machine always seems broken and the people working there seem to intentionally work it a snails pace. Watching them serve your food is like watching a slow-motion replay of a normal person filling a tray with chicken, sides, and a biscuit. Still, it's the only Popeye's in Boston and you're insane if you skip it for those minor flaws. Easily spent a C-note here during my last semester of college. UPDATE: Based on my experiences the past few years, this place doesn't seem to carry spicy strips anymore. That's like a McDonald's not carrying Big Macs.

"You win! Add a side of 43 chicken thighs for $3.65!" That smart little register gets me every time. I'll walk in for a drumstick and a biscuit and the little up-selling salesmachine grabs my ankles and shakes the change out of my pockets. Every time I'm in Kenmore, I have to stop by for fried chicken and a fat bisquit. If I lived in Kenmore, I'd be in for a problem. The chicken is pretty shit, but I'm addicted.

Between Popeye's and KFC, Popeye's kicks the living shit out of KFC. I notice a vast difference in the way I approach both. When I eat KFC's chicken, I kind of pick at it and dissect it. I leave the skin on the side to be later devoured and I eat the meat by tearing it away from the bone. When I eat Popeye's chicken, I don't dissect. I just bite right into it. Like I can't even wait. I just bite right into it and it tastes so good that way. Just yelping about this damn place is making me hungry. Anyhow, I have always enjoyed their food and I guess since we don't have many of them in Boston, it's easy for them to overprice their food cuz when you go down South where Popeye's are more common, the prices are much lower. I really do wish the prices were lower, but sometimes, with my cravings, I don't even care. I love their cajun fries with my chicken. It's tasty. I just don't always like the service. I once got into a fight with the girl taking my order. I paid with my credit card and she began to tell me about how I should be careful with my credit card because she had the exact same card and got charged numerous fees. I then proceeded to explain that since I was a student, I got a special deal through my bank to not have any fees since I was a student so until I graduate, I don't have to pay ANY fees. She then told me that I was wrong and that I was going to get charged fees. I looked at her in awe. You're working at Popeye's and you're going to give me advice on my banking, much less, you're telling me that I'm going to get charged when I know my damn self that I won't? I wanted to smack her in the face with her bag, but instead, I smiled, told her that I would talk to my banker, took my chicken and got the fuck out of there. So the lesson here? Eat Popeye's, but don't let that girl see your credit card! She might try to convince you to increase your credit limit or something. Sheesh.

Best fried chicken place in Boston. Such a friendly staff and really good environment. Right in the heart of kenmore square near Boston university. Perfect place for a college student to grab a quick bite to eat.

FIrst time at a Popeye's in awhile. Actually surprised to see one in Boston. To put it simply I forgot how damn good this place was. You have to go spicy with the chicken. I know this place is a fast food chain and all but it has consistently good fried chicken and probably a good place to stuff your face before going to Fenway and spending much more (Although a ballpark hot dog or sausage is damn good too...now I just sound like a fatty).

Where were you all my life? How could I have thought that KFC was even close to being good fried chicken? Why did you leave me?! Our paths only crossed last year, and then, you were gone. A vacancy filled my heart and belly... no longer were there any places in this town that could compete with the juicy tenderness or the spicy crispness. Your biscuits are oh so light and buttery. Your mac & cheese is simply amazing. Sadness overwhelmed me when I had heard you were closed down due to some shadiness. But... here you are again. Open and serving me once again. Your chicken is still ever so perfect, and those biscuits make me giddy with each bite. When I reviewed Popeye's last year, I was torn. For all the goodness that Popeye's was, and how it filled the void of a fried chicken place, the service was so poor that I couldn't force myself to post a 5 star review. I'm glad to say I was in the neighborhood last week, and swung by to see how things had changed. First and foremost, they are prompt. There is no more waiting in line for 2 hours being only 7 people deep in a line. You walk up, place your order, the girl fills your order right then and there, you walk to the cash register and viola, you are on your way out the door! Some things have changed tho. They used to have a 5 whole wing meal (1 side + drink) which is the combo I always got. So I asked for it and they looked at me like I had 3 heads! They no longer have the combo, nor do they have onion rings any more (which is a shame, its hard to find a freakin' good onion ring in this town). But I will say they were very nice. They gave me a coupon that was a 5 piece family meal deal for only a few bucks, and I was able to get 5 wings, some fries and a coke for under $10. I'm glad Popeye's is back. I'm glad that I can now go there, and pick up my chicken without needing to allocate hours of my time. I'm glad its as good as its always been, and I can't wait to go back again and again.

I like Popeye's Chicken, having one a block away from my college apartment being a wonderful convenience. The fried chicken is one of those guilty indulgences with the flavor permeating the chicken instead of just tasting batter and generic meat filling. However, I have issue with the food at this location. Maybe because I've only been in here late at night... but the chicken I've had here every time has been under the lamps too long and dry. Service is also very... wooden, where the employees aren't rude, but... just don't seem to act like people, more like machines. I'll stick to other locations...

The first time i tried Popeye's was in New York City and I liked it a lot! It was different from KFC and had that extra spicy kick to it that I love. The mashed potatoes and cajun gravy = yumO! I went to the one in Boston with my cousin and I was kind of disappointed. The food wasn't that great and didn't measure up to the first time.

Ok. So. I know Popeye's is a chain...in fact, I remember there was one in my town as a kid but then all of them closed in Mass. Why???? I hate KFC, so, this is my option. I like Popeye's fried chicken quiet a bit. I know this location is not the most beautiful, clean, or friendly BUT I still enjoy the chicken. It is also a pain in the ass to find parking around there (try the bank lot across the street). I can't say the other items on the menu deserve any more then 2 stars. Only the chicken is receiving 3 stars. Enjoy!

Hilarious! (that's the 4 stars) I've been meaning to stop in here since I got my license back (you know... glug-glug/ vroom-vroom/ :'( ), and this Sunday was the perfect day. There were women in their church clothes, like I was actually down south! Where the hell is there a church around the Fenway?! All of the tables were taken by couples, like they were on THE WORST DATES, EVER. :( Most couples had a box of chicken and SEVERAL biscuits between them. I hope they give out Stridex pads instead of Handi-Wipes. Fucking GREASE STORM! The counter was out of control, and the lines reminded me of that scene at the stadium in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, you know? Yeah... those ones. :( When you order, they have some special offer to convert the leftover change from your purchase to the next full dollar. People were getting fun things like potatoes (yay) and a larger drink (awesome)... my total was $6.29. For $7.00 I was given the most DISGUSTING options. I think my choices were Dirty Rice, Jambalaya and a Fried Bull Testicle or something... I told the cashier he could keep the change if I didn't have to take possession of either. The food was like Dairy Queen hooked up with SONIC, after getting an STD from Roy Rogers. :'( :'( :'( I hadn't eaten at a Popeye's in at least a decade, and I hope I'll be able to say the same thing in another 10 years. At least it's a sign that Kenmore is changing for the better? Maybe the Rat can open up again?

When it comes to fast food, Popeyes has done it right. This is the closest thing I can find to real N'awlins grub. Fried chicken, red rice and beans, mac n cheese, and the best part of all... delicious buttery biscuits. Get the chicken done spicy - i mean really, don't be a wuss about this - plain just doesn't do the chicken justice. There really isn't any good food down by fenway anway, so why not get the unhealthy fried fast food? Loved the friendly cashiers too!

Incredible food, fair prices and very friendly AND helpful staff. About a year ago this place was completely the opposite, but needless to say the place is impeccably clean, organized and delicious as ever. A must visit!

I wish I didn't love this place. My health would definitely be better for it. It's not exactly cheaper than other places but it'll win against KFC. It's irrational but I'm accepting it.

Since this is Boston, i'm going to write this review as if you've never heard of Popeye's before. Popeye's is a fast food chain that specializes in fried food (primarily chicken). It's got a little bit of a pseudo Norlens vibe, if you look at the art work on the walls or notice the Dr. John song in the background. Compared to KFC, the menu contains things like catfish (and shrimp?) and I dont think they have the big and nasty bowls KFC offers (the ones where they just jam all their base ingredients into one mixture). The coating is less bready than KFC and crispier. It comes in two flavors, Mild and Spicy- in reality Mild is plain, and Spicy is mildly cajun flavored. The chicken quality I find is generally better than KFC, especially in regards to the crispy strips, which are moister and thicker. Side orders are similar to KFC's- mac and cheese, fries, coleslaw, etc. The biscuits here are similar to KFC's but I find they're usually fresher and have a slightly better flavor. Popeye's is a little ghetto, so if your into great customer service with a smile or if female ass quarters that induce thoughts of a trans fat built spaceship you want to ride (out of this world) make you uncomfortable this really isnt the place to go. You might think that because you have a B.A. in art history, psychology, or mechanical engineering that you are smart enough to smooth out a little mini speech for the teller that outlines what you want and covers all the expected bases thereby ridding yourself of your ordering obligation quick and efficiently. Save that shit. No one wants to hear about your pompous thinking ahead. If you go up there rambling and jabbering about how you want a number five mild with coleslaw on the side etc etc the teller isnt going to want to remember all that while they try to punch it in and is just going to kiss their teeth at you and repeat in an increasingly antagonistic fashion "For here or to go?!?" So can it- they'll ask the question, you just supply the answers in the order they ask in a simple concise manner and you'll keep the already high odds of your order coming out screwed up from going any higher. At the very end of your order some items will pop up on the teller screen in front of you that will make the meal an even dollar amount, you can either choose one of them or not. I think it's a little more expensive than it deserves to be. My average order is a 5 piece chicken strip meal with a side of mac and cheese and a coke- this amounts to 9 dollars and some change. I always think that the 5 piece isnt going to be enough but by the time i'm on the fourth piece I feel it hit me square in the gut leaving me winded and satisfied without having to order extra. This location has limited seating, maybe three 4 person straw paper strewn tables, three 2 person napkin strewn tables, and a small wrap around counter for single seating. It gets packed at peak meal hours, but they'll give you a ticket with a number on it to keep things easy. You'll notice there's two teller stations (maybe a third in between?), one on the left and one on the right, your order will appear on the side that you ordered from so try not to wait on the opposite side otherwise you'll have to back track by wedging between and yelling over people to get to your food. The wait can be awhile, easily 10 to 15 minutes when things are going crazy. Once you do have your food, you'll find the napkins, straws, and sporks in a small enclave off to the left (looking at the counter). I eat there approximately once a week and over the past couple months they've screwed up my order roughly 20% of the time. Sometimes it works out against my favor (I end up with a diet coke), sometimes it works out in my favor (I get a double side order). I also wouldn't recommend eating this regularly- its like eating at Denny's or IHop- everyone looks exhausted as they wipe the sweat off their foreheads and jowls even though they havnt been doing any physical activity outside of sitting in place.

Why all the fuss Yelp?? Are we really that excited to have another lousy fast food chain come to town? After trying my first time at a Popeye's I can say I'm not that excited, in fact I'll probably not be back. Nine dollars for 3 pieces of not-actually-spicy-at-all greasy fried chicken with a biscuit, watery cola and some fries! It's not a bargain, and it's not a fun place to eat either, being in a cramped basement with less than 20 seats and more than 20 staff yelling at each other. This is only marginally better than KFC and all the rip-off clones I'm used to in London (Kansas Fried Chicken, Dixie Fried Chicken etc) and it costs more too. If I want fried chicken, you'll find me over the river at Coast Cafe. Much better and less stressful. ::: I did like the roulette wheel game thing on the computer when you order that offers you a random upgrade for a few cents more. Nice idea. :::

First time I've been to a Popeyes in a long time! They have changed so much since I've been, when did they add those little meals? It felt awkward going to Paopeyes and going, "Can I get a number 1?" Like I was at McDonalds or Burger King. Anyways very clean place, well at least during the snowstorm today. They were very patient and friendly, and even asked if I wanted to take the deal. The 2 things I didn't like was that they didn't mark the box with the chicken in it to state which was which. Also the meat was a little dried out and the side were a llittle bland. I guess I just remembered Popeyes differently since I was a kid, oh well. How oblivious you can be when your young. By the way they close early, what!??!??! What happened to late night fast food?

After my happyhour with fellow-yelpers at People's Republik, the only thing I could think about was Popeye's... I had been obsessing about it for days. Tonight I finally took the plunge. I waited in a long unruly line for 15 mins and then an additional 15 mins for my order (I don't wait in line, I'm special, in case you didn't know)... I hastily drove home and ravenously dug into my feast of fried chicken, popcorn shrimp and fries. The chicken was moist on the inside and perfectly crisped on the outside. It was very good. The popcorn shrimp actually consisted of small shrimp with a crisp batter (rather than just a crisp batter like a most places). It is fast food, I wouldn't eat it every day - BUT, as far as fast food goes, it is mighty fine!

I wish there was one of these around every corner!! Popeye's is by far the best fast food chicken . It's just sooo much better than KFC. I really can't explain why,, it just has more flavor, it's cruncher, fresher, it's just the best!!! The Biscuits taste better & are so moist, they have corn on the cob, the beans & coleslaw are the best. I'm not a fast food fan, but if you drive by a Popeye's, stop, get some of that chicken & call me. They seemed to pull them selves out of Ma. There's one by Fenway and one on the Maine turnpike.

I don't know exactly what they put in it, but Popeye's chicken is better than other fast food places. The fried chicken spicy and super crisp. The sides are gross except for the biscuits. The food here is super cheap, but if you eat here too much it may cost you a bypass surgery.

  • Jessica F.

Okay, it's a Popeye's. The fries have a shelf life of about 30 seconds, the chicken sits under heat lamps, the service is slow...but boy does it fill a craving! Personally, I'm a Lee's Famous Recipe kinda girl, but Popeye's really grew on me in college. The chicken is uber-greasy and delicious, the cole slaw is definitely my side of choice, and the biscuits...oh the biscuits! I live about 15 minutes away from Kenmore Square so the Popeye's temptation is strong. Be warned, the service is not speedy and there is not a lot of seating but when you gotta have Popeye's, you gotta have it. Don't go when the Red Sox are playing at home. I'm trying to convince my roommates that having a bucket-o-skin would be a fantastic idea, but they're not buying it. ;)

I grew up on this stuff as a kid. The franchise all but disappeared from Massachusetts for years. Now its back in Kenmore Square. The chicken is spicy and crispy, the biscuits are great, the fries are awesome, and the mash potatoes and gravy put KFC's to shame. Red beans and rice and Étouffée style Chicken Cajun Bowls are unique side items for a fast food restaurant and deliver on flavor. If you like southern style food and don't have a local soul food gem in your area, eat at Popeyes. I hope they expand more in Massachusetts!

I just has my first ever popeye's experience and it was pretty damn good! I'm glad I waited to go here until the initial roar died down and the management got its shit together. Upon entering, I was kind of blown away at how I could actually smell the sodium in the air. I walked right up and ordered. I got a two piece meal with biscuit, soda, and 1 side. I went for the chicken and sausage jambalaya. I also got a small slaw. I asked for half spicy, half plain on my chicken. I liked that they asked if I wanted light or dark meat. I went for dark and I was not disappointed. They actually gave me 2 drumsticks and a thigh - three pieces, woowoo! The chicken tasted great. The coating was crispy and flavorful. I totally prefer the spicy - it's a nice mild heat that adds a lot of flavor to the chicken. The biscuit was pretty damn tasty. Much better than KFC's biscuits. They don't have gravy, but they do have honey packets. Yaay! The Jambalaya was tasty - it was kind of a mush but it was pretty well seasoned. I would order this side again. The slaw - it was a decent flavor, the cabbage was in little square pieces (kind of weird) and it was mostly white in color, but it will do. Not the best, not the worst. Adequate, if a bit soupy. The fountain coke is tasty and definitely a worthy partner to this meal. The price - for my bounty I paid something like 8.04. I was thinking that the value isn't so great, but this place TRUMPS KFC and in a city with such lacking fried chicken options the price isn't going to steer me away. I like this place and I will be returning, though I can't imagine going here more than once every couple of months.

Less on star because theres no parking ,,,but other then that popeyes does have some good ass fried chicken,,the fries are as good as they get even though KFCs to me are better,,, and the popeyes buiscuts are way better the kfcs... the cole slaw kind of worried me tho it was thick like it was very heavy on the mayo and little veggies inside,,maybe i got the last batch i dunno but didnt eat the slaw.... over all i wouldnt eat this everyday because it is very greasy and they need to come down on the prices because KFC has better deals on their food then they do

  • Albert D.

I like it. Better than KFC, this place is exactly like any other popeye's. I think the vegetables are an afterthought in the cole slaw...

My husband was playing a gig near Fenway at a venue with no food. I was hungry so I ran down the street to Popeye's. First, I was told that they were out of biscuits, they were not serving sandwiches, and they were out of jalepeno poppers. I was highly displeased, because I wanted a chicken sandwich! Oh well. I got some chicken tenders that were a lot better than KFC. Spicy. A good choice in a pinch, but I wouldn't seek it out if I wasn't in the area.

I am desperately in love with their fried chicken. Give me a drumstick and I'm in heaven. The spicy recipe with a dollop of hot sauce on the side is great for the intrepid. I also love their buttery biscuits. The only thing that disappoints me is their lack of locations and cold leftover chicken.

I love fried chicken, and prior to Popeye's opening in Boston I could only get my fix of chicken at KFC. Let me be clear here, this is not "gourmet fried chicken." This is a fast food restaurant after all, but the chicken is pretty good. It's quite expensive for what it is, and the service is terribly slow. I've visited this place three times, and even had the dubious honor of the person taking my order yap away on her cell phone. Then I waited 15 minutes for my chicken because they messed up my order - twice. But hey, it's decent fried chicken and I probably won't eat at KFC again.

IT'S HERE!!!!!!!!!!! - no more eating it only on the way to NH/ME Popeyes is the shit.....Boston is sooo far behind on fried chicken it's stupid. Slades is the best but KFC sucks and that place in Grove Hall is ehhh and out of the way. Welcome Popeyes and all it's goodness....I remember when you could get gas and drive through the Popeyes drive-thru and pay for it all in one bang (Denver)....now all we need is a Church's

I saw a beautiful girl waiting for her food at Popeye's. I had all the information I needed, but by the time I returned with the engagement ring she was gone. Your Cajun Sparkle has ensnared me, Popeye. I shall live out my life alone.

ITA with David L. I always get the spicy chicken sandwich with a biscuit and it's yummy. I don't go too often because it's fired ya know. My only thing is the staff is SLOW AS FUCK. They should hire more alert people or something but overall it's nice to eat at.

I shouldn't admit to eating here, however when I get nostalgic for New Orleans I stop in. The food is consistent with all other Popeye's, however the service here is disgraceful. I am not a fan of substandard service. Yesterday, they were out of biscuits, red beans, coke and fries, they were promising additional chicken as a substitution, I discovered when I got home that didn't materialize. Also I always feel like I am walking into a crack den when I go to this location.

Was I excited when Popeyes came back to Boston? Yes! I used to eat at Popeyes all the time when I was a college student in Texas. Love the chicken, love the biscuits, and love the red beans and rice. I was thrilled to try out this Popeyes. While it doesn't seem to live up to the standards of the chains in Texas, it's still delicious! It sucks that there's only one location in the city and it's not very convenient to get to if you are driving. There's no parking, it's right near Fenway, no drive-thru. It's better than driving all the way to Providence for Popeyes. Yes, I once did that.

Hands down, best fried chicken on earth. I havent had KFC since I knew the existence of Popeyes. Popeyes vs. KFC is like... Mike Tyson vs. Buffy the vampire slayer. One is the real deal... the other one nothing but a poser.

What can I say.... ... That darn good chicken and biscuit had me at hello! FiNALLY, Pop eye's chicken has landed in Boston (3 months ago??, how could I miss that??). After I read a review from a yelper, Ms. Atrebor B, I flew down Beacon St. to get my 11 pieces for 11 bucks with side of dirty rice. I ate Popeye 13 years ago on Interstate 90 on the way to Niagara Fall. Since then, my appetite for Fried chicken has never been the same. In the past, I had to make deals with visiting friends and family if they wanted to go to Niagara Fall, they had to stop at Popeye (because I wanted my best chicken and dirty rice). Only con is parking but it is in a prime location, Kenmore, next to Fenway and near BU and T. Since Redsox played home game today, I had to park 4 blocks away and walked for my hunger. I didn't know how I could chow down 11 pieces, a pint of dirty rice and just staring at the best biscuit on earth and wondered "What da heck I am gonna do with you"? Bingo, I walked into my kitchen turning my savory biscuit to strawberry short cake!... Popeye's chicken and biscuits is the best of the best franchise. It was created by a real guy, Al Copeland, for the love of southern food. His copeland chain restaurants also serve really awesome cajun and creole food. If you head down south, go and try at one of them. EDITED : That's darn chicken made me paid the second visit - get Chick and Sausage Jambalaya rice- perfect compliment to my pop eye addiction.

Boston is not a city know for it's fried chicken, and for good reason. Just finding a KFC it a tricky proposition. Popeye's is in a way a welcome surprise. The location is nice if a wee bit sketchy. I really am not a huge proponent of quirky entrances to chain eateries. When I got inside I calmed down a bit as it was respectably clean. The cashier was pleasant and my order was taken quickly. When I placed my order I was pleased when I was asked if I wanted white or dark meat. I also enjoyed their mini spin the change wheel that let's you spend your change on an extra meal option. The telling part was the meal itself. The chicken was solid. Good relatively juicy and not overly greasy. Both pieces were enjoyable and consistent. Now for the sides. The potatoes were as I would expect but I was quite dissapointed by the gravy. It seemed as if they had overseasoned it in an attempt to distract the patron. The rice was had no enjoyable flavor and I regretted paying the extra 68 cents for it. The biscut was enjoyable however I the top of mine was a bit soaked in beter and would have been better if they had used less or cooked the top a bit more. The straight-fried chicken buscuts and sides What's good-nice reliable fried chicken The slap-Weak sides and over priced for the quality.

aahh..finally!! there is one in brockton but i never wanted to make the drive. but finally! the chicken god loves me. it's way better than KFC. it's crispier, less oily (drip wise), and heavenly goodness of fat, grease, and spicy chicken. i tear the skin off then munch on the white meat and then i scoop me some mashed with gravy and at the end- i get a bite of my honey drizzled biscuit. oooh- i just made myself drool.

Very very expensive and very slow service. I often see the manager behind the counter trying to make things run, but somehow they are terrible at keeping orders in cue (maybe two cashiers is too much? who knows.) The biscuits are better than KFC but otherwise will make you sick because they use some kind of fusion process with solid butter. Chicken is average- way too much breading and not enough meat for a $7 order for two pieces, a medium sprite and fries. A supermarket can sell rotisserie chicken for 6 pieces at $4.99- just go to Johnnie's Fresh Market down the street in Brookline. I really can't see why this place has to be so expensive. It's like an addictive bad habit. The sodium/sugar compounds mimic MSG for addictiveness and will keep making you come back to consume lots of artery-clogging chicken and fries. Fries are actually decent, better than any fast food burger joints.

There's only 1 word to describe this branch of Popeye's in Kenmore Square; and that's chaotic. I was in the store for 30 minutes (10 min. of waiting in line + 20 min. of waiting for my order) before I finally emerged victorious with my "popcorn shrimp" and "fried catfish" craver packs for a total of $6.91. The place was heavily congested with hungry patrons and behind the counter - with very stressed-out staff (about 15 of them). There was yelling and shouting of order numbers with occasional grunts of dissatisfaction from customers who've been waiting since...forever. I did enjoy my sodium-packed and batter-encrusted pee wee popcorn shrimp and flaky catfish though; these items were fresh and reasonably priced. Avoid dining here and definitely have your order to go since there's a complete lack of ventilation. People all seem pleased and very excited with the fried chicken; ordering huge amounts of food; with totals toppling over $70.

We all know that indulging in too much fast food is not good for you. But my mind has created an exemption for places that serve fried chicken because you can kind of tell what part of the animal you are eating. Rational right? My love for spicy fried chicken has been a long journey from the urban streets of Jersey & Popeye's fill that need perfectly. Through in some dirty rice & I am pretty much in heaven. While this location is small, they shoehorned a few tables inside & even a restroom for it customers. The staff is a prime example of treating people like you want to be treated. They are open late & get a lot of clients from local bars & clubs. That is when "sassy" mode comes into full effect but my personal experience has always been positive except the time it was 10:15pm & the closing time was 11:00pm but the staff refused to make any more chicken even though there was a long line of paying clientele eagerly waiting for a quick two piece & a biscuit. The $3.89 Fenway Special, two piece or two tenders & a biscuit, is the best deal in the area. Overall it is a satisfying experience but most people do come for the atomsphere. So I will find any excuse I can to come here & feed my irrational hunger for that chicken at Popeye's!!!

I go out of my way to come here because I love Popeye's so much! That craving in the middle of the week... Always and I mean always greeted by the nicest people. Never rushes me and my indecisiveness, always asking me if I want some extra sauce and things. Got catering for my club a couple of time. Once they didn't do the order exactly like we've asked but I understand because my friend ordered the minute off and I don't think it was enough time for them to crank out that much food in such a time. Chicken always tasty with the right crunch, and my friend got me addicted to that mash potato! Get a gallon of sweet tea to drink for the week. Always so sad that they make my order too quick so I end up overbudgeting travel time and have to wait for the bus forever.

Before going to Popeye's you need to ask yourself, "Which do you like more: delicious fried chicken, or diarrhea?" Assuming you answered delicious fried chicken, I've got some great news for you; you didn't need to make that choice, you will definitely be getting both! I got the chicken tenders, and they were awesome. I had a biscuit and a side of mashed potatoes, again excellent. The gravy had an interesting spice to it, and it was perfect for biscuit dipping. Would I go back? Absolutely. Do I wish I didn't shoot a Quabbin Reservoir's worth of post Popeye's deliciousness out of my orifices the next day? Yeah, that would be a pretty cool guy, but you know for chicken this good I can deal with a few hours of recovery time.
